Reviews of The Stand Comedy Club
D. R.
Get there in plenty of time before the act goes on as there isn't seating for everyone, some people had to stand throughout the performance
I really loved the interior and it had a great atmosphere, the only issue was the heat... It was like a sauna, could do with a few fans around especially at the moment with Scottish sunshine it was very warm!
N. B.
Went on a Monday night for Red Raw and it was hilarious! Was crying with laughter. Never been to a stand up comedy show before but will definitely be going to more after this! And £5 for around 8 acts is brilliant in my opinion! Unfortunately I don't remember the names of all the acts which sucks and I wish there was somewhere I could find out!
T. P.
Had a great time at the BonaFide show. Great idea, to get the comics to work on new material by giving them a theme. The host Jay is wonderful as well. Very intimate, highly recommended!
A. d.
Great show, friendly and accommodating staff. I have mobility issues and was unable to forewarn the venue. They took it in stride and made me feel very comfortable. Will definitely be returning! I recommend if you require a wheel chair to communicate with the venue before as there is no step free access. However if like me you just require seating, space and step free loo access it is definitely do able but be better than me and contact before!!
D. F.
Wonderful place to see comedy. Not fancy, WMC vibe in terms of decor but great space for the comedy. Get down a bit early to not end up in the far corner.
a. m.
Great intimate venue, staff were very attentive ensuring I had a seat and offering me to use a more accessible toilet whilst pregnant, toilets otherwise down steep steps. Acts were generally good but the host was the best crowd pleaser and as with any comedy night there was some hit and miss for other acts. Get there early for a seat.
H. Y.
We had so much fun at their Monday Red Raw night! Very memorable experience and we laughed so much. Definitely get there early if you want a seat! Such a good option for something a little different when visiting Edinburgh
S.
We were visiting from out of town and curious about Scottish humor, definitely got what we came for. All the acts were great, personally really liked Hannah and the person who talks about takeaway.
They do send an email about this - make sure to get there at least half an hour early if you’re hoping for seating as a lot of people are forced to stand.
j. n.
Have wanted to go to The Stand for a while and the Friday Show did not disappoint - aching with laughter and will definitely go again when we're back in Edinburgh. It was a friendly atmosphere as well - got chatting with the girl next to me who said it's the only independent comedy club left in the city now - so it needs our support ! Our show was packed out though so book online to be sure of being able to get in .
A. C.
Best comedy club in Scotland. Small, intimate with a great atmosphere. Scotland's - and even some of the UK's - top comics are always performing here and I've yet to walk away without sore cheeks from laughing. A good night out guaranteed
B. L.
Had an amazing night and full of tear fulled laughs. Although some at my expense as we sat near the front. All comedians were hilarious. The gentleman at the door was so friendly and managed to get us seats. Will definitely be back 👍
F.
I've been here multiple times and have enjoyed each visit. I highly recommend Red Raw and their Saturday nights comedy shows! The staff are very friendly and the venue is very cosy.
J. D.
Had a great nite at the comedy club, some really funny acts and a good friendly atmosphere. Best act was the compare who got us all laughing out loud. Warning don't sit next to the stage....worth the money.
G. I.
On my solo trip to edinburgh, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and go to the comedy club for a night of laughs. And boy am I glad i did. Local comedians, some decent snack options, and a nice bar. This should be something you do while visiting
J. H.
Went to Red Raw. Great night out, very funny acts with a couple that stood out.
Food really good as an added bonus.
Definitely recommend
M. M.
My wife and I are at the stand tonight, no comedians have been on yet but the 5 stars are for the food. The only thing we haven't had is the Big Tam. For around £30 for a couple it cannot be beaten
S. h.
Great venue in the heart of edingburgh, fantastic value for quality comedy
T. J.
Small intimate venue with great energy. Compare was very funny and not ott. Drink were reasonably priced. Worth a visit.
P. K.
Great comedy show, even the freshers were great! Bug, there's little of space for sitting, even on Monday there was no where to sit! Still recommend tho!!
F. R.
Very crowded, nice beer selection, decent show. Unfortunately, the sound wasn’t great and the MC was lousy. Comedians were good though.
M. T.
Absolutely loved the show tonight..first time here and would highly recommend it....we had such a laugh!
D. S.
Well managed seating, just book online before going. Get the chance to see new talent here. Have now been to both the Glasgow and Edinburgh Stand Clubs. On the night I found 2 out of 3 to be good. Warm and friendly club. Good evening.
n. l.
Had a couple of nights in Edinburgh and so glad we caught Stu & Garry’s improv night.Absolutely brilliant entertainment guys, Thankyou.
A. P.
Slightly crowded, otherwise very friendly staff, good beer selection and of course a good, funny show!
S. E.
Just what I needed!
Great comedy club with a well curated cast of comics. Go early to get a seat. Such a fun night!
r. d. (.
I work here. Its an amazing club and they treat their staff like family. We are working hard to reopen and have started an on-demand service for people to enjoy some of the best UK acts at home. Check out our live every saturday at 8.30!
The food is ace btw. Ate it every night on shift. Get the nachos, you won't regret it!
A. D.
Such a good night! Small but not sweaty, funny on stage - highly recommended!
M. G.
It was great to be back! Very well organised given the restrictions, I preferred that it was all seating and slightly less busy. You order drinks via a QR code and the staff then bring them.
j. s.
Great comedy venue, value for money from tickets to food and drink. Highly recommend a visit.
G. H.
Great club for an up close comedy show, reasonably priced drinks friendly staff
P. C.
Great selection of new Scottish talent at their Monday night Red Raw gig. Great value for £5. I wish they would list performers names on their social media to make it easier to continue supporting local comics.
G. L. (.
Excellent venue for the fringe and small and intimate. Making the show feel very personal. Great staff that were very helpful in regards to accessibility for my partner.
L. B.
We had a wonderful evening "best of Scottish comedy - 'available'" 😅
C. H.
Took my girlfriend here in our first date around 7 years ago and loved it (and her). Visited again recently as part of a weekend away in Edinburgh and still fantastic.
M. J.
Awesome, burlesque comedy place. Places, because there are two of it. We saw Marjolein Robertson with her handless fish and it was great - nice people, moody location, good drinks. Definitely a GoTo if you are visiting Scotland; of course after having been to Aberdeen and the Shetland Islands with their cute Ponys..
Thanks. A lot.
J. C.
Great view with an "intimate" atmosphere. Seating is limited, so get there early, although standing at the back gives easier access to the bar. It's down stairs so if you need help just ask the staff. Go and enjoy an act or two. It's not just for the Edinburgh Festival, it's for life.
T. M.
Went here to see Steve Hofstetter and had a great night! Real cosy venue, will definitely be back for another show and would recommend to everyone!
J.
Had a great laugh here, staff are friendly and helpful, and comics have a great attitude and excel in the environment. Very few people breaking the house rules, but swiftly brought back in line with a friendly shoulder tap, or sharp comment from those on stage
K. L.
Good laugh. Average prices on drinks. More room than HWCC but can be sat close to the stage. Friday night 830 till 10ish. Worth the £15 on the door.
L. M.
Absolutely hilarious night loved it me and my pal will definitely be back xx
E. R.
The show I would say was 50 to 50 good. ... the staff very friendly
C. S. (.
It's a small space, but we had a lot of fun and plenty of laughs. Get there early to get a decent seat.
J. G.
Saw Kai Humphries and he was so good. The Stand is a great venue. Like Glasgow it is cosy, informal and friendly.
O. G.
Our 1st time into the Edinburgh Stand venue. It's really small compared to the Newcastle venue but that wasn't an issue. The 3 acts were all great and we had a great night. Will look to visit again next time we're in Edinburgh :)
A. P.
Saw Jo Caulfield here on a Saturday night. The staff were super friendly in helping me find a seat and the show was hilarious
C. G.
Cannot recommend this club highly enough. My partner and I both have mobility difficulties and the staff here went the extra mile to look after us and make sure we were comfortable. We've been to a lot of venues but never have we been treated with such dignity and respect as the staff at The Stand treated us. A lot of larger venues could learn a lot from these wonderful people! The gig was fantastic, and made all the more special by not having to stress about our conditions. Huge thanks to all the staff at the club for making our night so memorable!
M. K.
We had a lovely and entertaining evening! Nice and cosy environment, totally worth a visit when you’re in Edinburgh
E. W.
Came on Saturday night to a packed audience! By the time we arrived, it was standing room only! We got to see 3 acts and they were all fantastic!! The compère was brilliant too! Can’t wait to return again!!
S.
Great to see some stand up comedy, very intimate. Can get warm down there!
P. D.
A really good laugh. We were in the front row and totally loved it. Food isn't great but you won't mind it after hearing the comedians.
K. C.
Only £5 for a cracking wee night of comedy. If you are in the city and looking to do something in the evening defo recommend 👌
K. B.
Great atmosphere, service and comedians! Can't wait to come back!
P. K.
Amazing comedy acts and drinks. No food though, only snacks, so go out and eat before:)
N. S.
Great line up and hilarious host.
D. M.
Really enjoyed our night, wish there had been some extra seating but still worth standing for
A. D.
Fab night. Loved all the stand ups, especially Aves Robins from Western Australia.
J. C.
Came here for a Fringe show. A few minutes late for start of show. Who isn't when running around The Fringe! No probs , made to feel welcome.
P. B.
Friendly, helpful staff well stocked and reasonable bar oh and the entertainment was brilliant
C. M.
Went to the Red Raw comedy night, great set up and great venue! Would recommend a visit
S. L.
Great host for the evening, very entertaining. we enjoyed the artwork at the venue too, loved the decor. Absolutely no problem with restriction- prebook and go, the drinks are ordered via individual QR code.
T. K.
I went in on a monday with my friends visiting from Norway! It was cheap and hilarious :)) The mc was great and kept the show running, some of the acts where truly magnificent! Thank you so much for making us cry with laughter
D. B.
Brilliant show great venue.
Jay Lafferty the MC is the highlight!
G. G.
Great experience at the Red Raw event on Monday. Well worth the money and a great first time experience at a comedy club. Would highly recommend this place. The host was great, funny and charismatic and each comedian was great at working with the audience.
P. B.
Great comedy! Bar closes as soon as someone goes on stage so be prepared.
L. C.
We visited here 2 nights of our 4 night stay in Edinburgh and had a great time both nights! Quite a small club so if you want good seats then arrive early!
J. G.
Great show, if you can get tickets Jo Caulfield is brilliant!!
B. C.
Small and friendly, fairly priced drinks.
Can get very crowded and hot.
M. C.
Awesome little venue. We did the Thursday comedy night and it was smashing. Great value on the tickets and drinks, and the acts were top notch. 11/10 would go again
S. L.
Luv this place ..but be warned if mobility is a bit iffy like mine, toilets are down narrow twisty stairs.
H. M.
Such a brilliant comedy venue, had a blast there. Got to three four brilliant comedian's and the bar service was super quick!
R. R. M.
Fantastic performances, great night out in Edinburgh. I wpuld definitely recommend visiting the comedy club.
S. B.
Exceptionally fun night! First time at a comedy club and I think it'll be a hard one to beat! Great acts and compere, and drink affordable too!
B. T.
Had a great night. Staff were very attentive and coutious. Staff member explained the Covid rules and location of toilets etc. at the door and then another staff member showed me to a seat. Would definitely go here again
K. P.
Second visit and always get top notch comedy often from up and coming stars but seasoned pros. Definetly worth a visit especially at such reasonable prices
g.
Vic Dibitetto brilliant show one funny guy
A. A.
Seen Mark Thomas there, lovely and iconic venue, highly recommended
J. S.
Amazing comedians. Only downside is limited seating but great night out.
J. S.
A brilliant performance but packed in like sardines....just like the old times! Great time
R. Q.
This was such a fun little venue and the staff were so friendly. The comedy acts were great, as was the presenter. Great night out!
S. D.
If you re in edinburgh for a couple of days be sure to visit this place. They have a lot of stand up comedians on almost every night. The prices are moderate and you have a great evening with lots of laughs.
D. Q.
Great venue. Visited for one of the Fringe shows.
K. K.
At first it looks quite small however when you enter in it's a decent size. Good range of drinks. The atmosphere is very artsy and nice, amazing painting all over the place. Hosts are super funny. Would definitely advice to pop in there at least once. As well the tickets are fairly cheap.
K. G.
Excellent lunchtime comedy and tasty food. Best way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
C. A. M. W.
Been in absolute stitches; the acts are great, the staff are amazing and it was a treat to attend. Can't wait to return
J. C.
The best comedy club in the country. Lovely staff. Great acts
A. M.
Nice intimate venue. Toilets quite difficult to find and access!
J. W.
Great space for an intimate comedy gig!
S. S.
THE best location for Stand Up in Edinburgh - it IS intimate, you do get close-up and personal with the acts on stage, but DON'T move the seats & DON'T heckle!
A. C.
Visited on my first trip to Edinburgh and had an absolutely amazing time!
The club has a certain charm about it and is tucked away below street level. There's a host of seating around the stage but be warned, if you don't want to be part of the show, it's best to sit off to the side or a little further back as those in the front rows were often brought into the jokes.
This was particularly funny and I imagine it is hilarious if you're happy to be a part of the show!
It does get very busy so it would be advised to arrive at the venue early if you want to have a good shot at getting your selection of seats. With the venue being compact, you're never very far away from the bar which is a bonus.
The venue also have a good menu so you can grab a bite to eat before the show starts and I must admit, the chicken burger I had was delicious!
It's tough to say what the quality of the acts are like on average with this review being based on a single visit but it's safe to say that I doubt they would book any acts that were sub par. The acts on the night of my visit all had me laughing which made it an thoroughly enjoyable evening. So much so, I'm already planning a visit on my next trip!
All in all, its a must see place on any trip to Edinburgh, you certainly win't regret it!
S. V.
What a fantastic night we had when we went to see Myra Dubois, laughed non stop from beginning to end. A big shout out to the staff for the excellent table service. We will definitely be back!
S. L.
Great acts. The Cowboy larger was dreadful, so stick to the bottles and mind the stairs down to the toilet but in the main, really great venue!
P. K.
Great fun for a weeknight event. Not too overcrowded but be sure to arrive early if you want a seat!
A. B.
Jo Caufield show was very funny.Stand always has top acts
S. H.
Great evening out. Everything was reasonably priced and the comics were varied and great quality. The nachos are huge! But delicious. There are quite a few tables, then chairs, then high stools, then standing. We ended up on the high stools as we didn't get there until 7ish. We could eat off a tray but wish we'd had a table. So definitely go for doors opening if you want to eat and a must if you don't want to stand! We'll definitely come back
M. S. R.
Good fun taking part in BBC recording session, with free tickets. Show I saw better in the second half than the first, but that's just the luck of the draw. Venue small and cosy, but views can be restricted towards the back. Sound system good though. Bar staff friendly, prices OK, although wouldn't have minded a wider beer range.
r.
Very small place but good friendly atmosphere. Seats a bit uncomfortable, sit very close to the acts . Seems easy to get served at the bar. Would return. Monday night was about £7-8. New talent or new material was great value
J. R.
We had a great time! The venue is cozy, the comedy was quality, the food was pretty good as well (we had nachos). Word of advice, if going for on of the Saturday shows get there at 1830. All of the tables were taken by 1845.
F. T.
Was there for the midweek comedy cabaret. The host was amazing. Very small basement, so it is a very intimate setting. Also makes it easy for the comedians to riff off the audience. You must go early if you want a seat. The shows are super cheap considering the number of comedians and the quality of comedy.
D. S.
The show was great! They have a good amount of beer and drink options. The decor was nice good music played during the breaks. The bathrooms were good, no weird smells. You have to get there right as doors open. It was very crowded and more than half the crowd had to stand.
l. w.
Laughworthy performances in an intimate setting where the audience is part of the act! Should be on your itinerary for any Edinburgh visit
L. L.
Lovely food, staff are very friendly and the shows are great! Come here in Sundays to see Stu and Garrys free improv show!
S.
Loads of fun- definitely love the weekend shows where there is more than one act on, that way you're garuanteed at least one will leave you in stitches!
Make sure you take their advice and get there as early as possible as the venue is quite small and you won't get a seat otherwise.
Bar provides good selection at reasonable prices!
L. F.
Always hosting good shows, WiFi could be improved as me and my partner struggled to stay connected and you need this to order drinks. Toilets could be maintained a little more.
K. C.
A great experience. Based on what the regulars said, sometimes you can hit a show where you are unlucky with one or two of the comedians. According to them it does not happen often though.
You can buy food before the show start at the venue. There is limited seating and you should arrive early if you want to sit at a table during the show.
The total amount of entrance tickets is limited at well so don't buy at the last minute.
P. H.
Excellent venue for stand up comedy. Small and very informal, with a great bar.
C. T.
What a great time at the comedy club! Make sure to get there early though because seats go fast! We got there at 7.30 and there were no seats left. However the staff were able to get my girlfriend and I 2 stools to sit on which was great for us. Will be back!
C. d. M.
Great atmosphere and vibe. While not every comedian may be to your liking they always have a great line up. There will be one anyone can laugh at. It’s a very cozy place, too and an absolute must for any comedy admirer. They also have a great membership programme to take advantage of for only 15 quid. Brilliant place.
Y. S.
Fantastic comedy club 10/10. Top notch stand up comedians, the Giants particularly had me in constant fits of laughter. The host was one of the best i've seen. Great atmosphere, quick service and friendly staff. We had standing tickets but was still able to watch the show with a good view. Would especially highly recommend visiting if you're down for just a few days in Edinburgh as it was one of our highlights visiting the city.
P. G. v. R.
Fantastic venue for Comedy. It fills up quite quickly so don't be too late.
H. C.
Great night, very cosy so if you don't mind sharing your experience and table then definitely book! Turn up for doors opening as that's the only way you'll get a seat. It's definitely worth trying the food, nothing healthy but my god those nachos were to die for!!!
D. S.
Small underground venue, but that does add to the atmosphere. Most seats are up close and personal with the acts. Don't just go for headliners, see some up and coming talent too. Good selection of beers at the bar.
P. Y.
Used to go to The Stand fairly regularly. It was great to be back there last week. Good, quality acts all. Nice to see some of the old staff are still there too. Pretty speedy bar service from what is a fairly wee area to be working out off. Will definitely be going back soon.
J. M.
Jo Caulfield is the highlight of the Edinburgh fringe. Don't miss her
S. M.
Awesome night, great environment totally recommend, we didn't book was lucky enough to turn up and get in...
F. M.
2 shows in 2 days at the Edinburgh Fringe....Good stuff
S. T.
Seen Kevin bridges and friend's here recently. Great intimate venue to see all you're favourite comedians. Staff are very helpful too
D.
Such a great night. Bar one, the acts were HILARIOUS, the other was just funny, but it was brilliant and I would go again any day.
If you're in town, have an evening here. The food is nice too!
J. H.
This, in my opinion, is comedy how it should be - in your face and in a small venue.
It serves great food, great acts & very nice beer - all very reasonably priced. I'm sure you can see elsewhere the long long list of famous names it's had grace its stage - but they all seem to play second fiddle to the venue itself.
Regardless of the act on stage I've always enjoyed a night here - it's not the plushest, fanciest or cleanest of Edinburgh venues, but that's how I expect live comedy.
P. A.
One of the best comedy experiences ever. Easy to book online and the Thursday show is excellent. Get there early to ensure you get a seat/table. It opens at 7.00pm, but if you go for 6.40 you should be okay. The show is brilliant and so funny!!
S.
The best place to go for comedy, anywhere. Have seen many of the best names in comedy there, it's always intimate, the food is great too..i wish I could go to Stu and Gary's free improv every Sunday. It never fails to make me laugh and forget any troubles I have.
E. M.
Could not have had a more friendly and helpful 'meet and greet as I walked in for the first time. Excellent first impressions. Instantly you sense a good atmosphere of everyone just wanting to have a cracking night and a good laugh. Any age can go in my opinion, it's a tonic plus it's cosy and low roofed, suiting the underground cavern vibe. Get there early is a tip! You can ave drinks and there's a food menu before the show, wedges (delicious), nachos, burgers etc. All a good fit for what customers want I think
. I liked the darkness as comedians performed and, this is a key part, the quality of comedy is excellent. I went to get cheered up and it worked!
J. M.
An Edinburgh institution, popular with locals and visitors alike. Intimate basement club with everything you would expect from an old style comedy club. Decent bar and good bar-style food (burgers, nachos, etc) for a quick bite. Lovely friendly staff who obviously love their job. Ticket prices are not exorbitant either, even during the Fringe when most venues hike up their prices. Don't miss their Monday evening "Red Raw" night where new faces can be discovered, as well as the occasional big name trying out new material.
S. B.
I often go to comedy clubs.. This was great fun the comedians were excellent. However make sure you get there at least an hour before the show starts as I got as I didn't get a seat even though I pre booked tickets. Standing up in heals for an hour and a half is not so fun
S. C.
Excellent comedy. Had me absolutely howling at some points. Food was actually amazing too as was the range of drinks on offer. Would highly recommend it. Get there early though if you want a seat!
A. S.
Authentic Edinburgh LOLs. Great place for seeing all the greats. Cabaret tables. Intimate. No frills.
P. C.
What a great place for a night out! We followed the advice of others and arrived ten minutes before opening. This allowed us to choose a table before the place filled up, very quickly. The food is excellent and hearty. Portions are large, especially the chilli and nachos starter, which would easily serve four as a starter, unless you're a greedy get! The chilli is pulled beef and not mince, which was a very nice touch. We actually met the chef whom is a lovely man and keen to ensure everyone is pleased with their meal. The acts didn't disappoint either, absolutely hilarious, brilliant night. Everything about The Stand, the staff, the food, the atmosphere, just GO. If you don't like it, you're not a nice person!!
R. C.
Neat little comedy club with new artists, experimental sets a d interesting performances. Seating is limited so come early if you can. There's a full bar and limited food menu so you can enjoy a drink or a bite while you laugh as well
P. C.
Fabulous!!! One of the best nights out in Edinburgh. If you want a seat get there early and queue outside. Beer isn't the best but drinkable. Dont sit at the front unless your very thick skinned and enjoy being part of the show and dont rearrange the seating as understandably it's a small compact place and staff get upset by it. Otherwise to that BRILLIANT!!!!!
S. D.
Went to the Thursday show, make sure you queue up a few minutes before door opening to get a good seat. The comedians were fantastic and had a lot of diversity. If I was in Edinburgh longer I would be a repeat visitor.
S. B.
Always have a great night here, laid back venue with great staff. Very intimate setting with great comedians. The free Sunday show is always a fun way to spend an hour if you're on a budget. Nice food too.
R. H.
First stop for comedy in Scotland. The Stand has an extremely high caliber of comedians on 7 days a week for great value - in particular Red Raw night on a Monday where you can get up to 10 acts for only £3! New comedians getting into the genre as well as established headline acts trying new material.
The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the drink prices are on par for the area and bar food is filling, tasty and affordable. Memberships are available for discounted entry on selected events as well as advance tickets to future events. Well worth multiple visits.
D. B.
A wonderful comedy club.
Stopped in here for the "Bright Club" night on Tuesday night. Didn't know what we were going to get before we sat down but we were not disappointed.
Concept is clever and well executed, local intellectuals do comic performances based on their field of research. These were not professional comedians but still very witty and clever.
The club does have professionals performing on other nights, and it's open every night so with checking out if you fancy a laugh.
S. V.
My team had suggested this for my farewell and we all indeed had a great experience. The stand up comedy was very enjoyable. Clever and witty comedy, you'll surely not regret visiting.
It's a small basement venue so be early for a table with good views. Food was nice.
s. j.
a great night, the sharing of the comedic experience with others is good as the setup is quite intimate and cozy. the drinks on offer were very good and very reasonably priced. i haven’t laughed so much in a long time and denitrify will be back!

The best place to go for stand up comedy with a huge variation of comedians to see, with a visit. However didn't read the small print and arrived to find there is limited seating and had to stand for 3 hours which wasn't ideal, so make sure you arrive with enough time to get a seat. Despite this is was a hilarious night.
R. A.
Great comedy here that is good value for money. Try and get there are early as possible as seats fill up very fast and there might only be standing room left. The bar staff are friendly and very quick at serving!
D. W.
Quality wee comedy club where we saw Jo Caulfield at the Fringe.
C. S.
A lot smaller than I expected, but had a great evening. The guy on the door was very friendly and helpful. Decent bar for a small venue. Be warned, this is a comedy club with very little room to hide (it's not just the front row that gets picked on :)
A.
Nice vibe, needs aircon, some comics better than others.
B. M.
First and foremost, amazing staff. Helpful, nice and easy-going. The comedians are the best of the best. There's even a membership for those visiting often with loads of perks, like discounts and knowing about upcoming shows before everyone else.
A must for comedy fans!
E.
The Stand is how I always imagined comedy clubs to look, it's nice and dark and a little bit cramped. Those brave enough to sit close to the front will easily be able to touch the comedians, however this is not recommended, best practice would be to avoid this at all costs.
This venue comes alive during the festival hosting some of the best acts of the Fringe, but tickets will often sell out for some of the bigger names so get in there first!
Don't assume The Stand is only for the Fringe though, there's plenty on throughout the year and could be the perfect place to see the next big act before they dominate the numerous TV panel shows.
Drinks prices are fairly standard and you can also grab a bite to eat when it's not taken over by the fringe.
C. F.
Excellent venue for small stand ups, beer usual Edinburgh prices and £10 entry on the door. Not many seats and no where to put jackets if standing. Don't let this put you off though. I will be back as will many others.
A. E.
Best night out in Edinburgh recommend sitting in the front row if u want to be part of the act 😀
L. S.
The classic, iconic comedy venue. It's a small venue which fills up quickly and can end up being standing room only, so arrive in plenty time if you want to guarantee a seat. Front row seats are effectively on the stage, so if you want to, you can very much be part of the action.
Often have big names, but what's best is to pick a random night and see some folk you've never heard of, usually pretty affordable as well.
Good food like chilli and nachos which really hits the spot, but only on weekends, do make sure you eat before if going on a Tuesday night!
It can start off a bit chilly but soon gets hot, so layers work best.
If going during the Festival, check which venue as they run about 4 different ones so you don't want to end up in the wrong place.

I went to The Stand on my own on one of my final nights in Scotland. I read that it was best to go as soon as the doors opened or you would be unlikely to find a seat, so I did so. The line to get in at opening time wasn't that long, and everyone who was in line definitely got a seat as well as several people who wandered in over the next half hour. However, by arriving at door opening time, I had obligated myself to wait for 2 hours before the first act began. As a lone tourist in a tightly packed room, this was quite unpleasant, even though I did have a table and a seat. I attempted to pass the time by ordering a bite to eat and was somewhat disappointed by the buffalo beef burger that I got.
The show finally started at 9 p.m. To be honest, the hostess was way funnier than a lot of the acts they brought on stage, who seemed ill-prepared for the evening, lost their train of thought in the joke telling, oftentimes weren't funny or relatable, and even looked at notes several times. Furthermore, there were several intermissions, sometimes even after only one comedian's act. I will say, though, that the final act was well-paced, funny, and somewhat unexpected as he brought in musicality to the comedy act.
All in all, I spent 4.5 hours in this establishment for maybe 30 minutes of true entertainment. Given that some comedy doesn't always resonate with every individual, I can't fully blame the comedians; perhaps it was just I who didn't find it funny. However, I do think that the night could have been better organized by the club. I feel somewhat meh about the experience overall.

Excellent intimate venue. The staff are really friendly and the food was also excellent. The portions were larger than expected which was a pleasant surprise :-) . Make sure you get there for 730 if you want to eat and get your drinks before the interval. Overall an excellent night. Highly recommended
S. F.
This place isn't very big so the comedy is right in your face, in a good way. The acts seem to feed off the atmosphere of the crowd being so close. Definitely Edinburgh's best comedy club and somewhere you need to experience if you enjoy live comedy.
A. G.
I went here on Tuesday night to see Bright Club. The door staff were fine, not exactly welcoming but your standard barely polite. Once inside you'll be underwhelmed if you are looking for a fancy venue BUT if you are just here for a laugh and an evening of comedy for better or worse you can't do better than The Stand in Edinburgh. It's a fairly small venue and fills up quickly even on a Tuesday night even for a comedy evening themed around Chemistry! Be warned you will be picked on if you are in the front row, but if that's part of the fun for you then get there at least 30min before the doors open to bag your seats - there are no reservations. Also be warned it is a cash bar so don't get caught short. The toilets are down some steep stairs and although clean are pretty scruffy, I didn't see any disabled access plus you have to get down some steep stone steps to get through a narrow doorway. All in all a classic dingy atmospheric comedy club that's worth a look any night of the week.
J. A.
This is where it all happens - the most storied comedy venue in the land.
J. C.
A first time visit for me and it was great! Very friendly and helpful staff, fair bar prices and great comedy. The venue soon started filling up but never felt crowded or stifling. I will be back.
L. T.
Great night, the comedians here on Saturday were brilliant, they get better and better as the night goes on. However, we were standing the whole time which got painful so get down there EARLY to get your pick of seats as it is smallish and fills up fast as you probably wouldn't want to be right at the front but definitely not at the side or standing. There are a few tables. Doors open at 7, show starts at 9, I'd get there 7, get food, drinks and a table seat (think they even have vegan options, I really regret going to The Queens Arms for pre show food). Don't go for dinner somewhere else first and then wonder why you're standing for hours when they have everything you need here. It's nice&cosy and waiting for the acts the music isn't bad either so make an evening of it. They did have a few breaks for toilet/drinks/chatting etc which helped. Next time I'm in Edinburgh I'll come back here and do it properly!
A. W.
Once again impressed, well entertained and very grateful to the funny, friendly and generous comedians and staff who gave their time and the use of their lovely venue last night to help AMIS raise funds to keep our service going. Can't thank them enough. Thoroughly recommend for a good night any time!
H. B.
We went for Valentine's Day, had a blast.
Good food, good beer, good comedians.
Found it a little irritating that they didn't accept card behind the bar, it's all cash.
I had to run out to the cash machine over by the train station. So take cash with you.
Definitely get there early if you want a seat with a table, it quickly becomes packed.
P. P.
It's compact and it's down some steps so don't bring your wheel chair but there is an easy access toilet. Once in grab your table then get a drink. The food is tasty, filling and arrives a little clumsy sometimes but all done with a great craic. A little gem of a place.
J. 1.
I spent an absolutely mesmerising night here with friend. The atmosphere was grand and the girl at the reception was really nice. Sorry for me not saying thank you when I left (due to my poor eyesight I didn’t see her there at that time lol). Will definitely bring more friends here next time and have some good laugh :)
H. M.
Arrive early or you will have to stand for the show at The Stand! Quality stand up comedy in an old school comedy club environment. Sit at the front for 'audience participation'!. Food, drink and belly laughs. Toilets could be upgraded and seats comfort but all adds to the atmosphere.
C. G.
Acts were good, staff friendly. Just sucks having to stand the whole show even though we bought tickets online and arrived an hour early. If you want seated tickets arrive when the doors open!
G. P.
Great venue for comedy shows. Up close and personal with the act on stage. Has a good choice of drinks at the bar and also serves food. Great atmosphere. Recommended
R. R.
The Stand is how you might imagine a comedy club to look like. In a basement of Georgian town house in the New Town. Low ceiling, cramped almost claustrophobic feeling and an absolutely brilliant atmosphere. The audience are up close and personal to the performers within easy touching distance, even in the back row you are probably not more than 25 feet from the stage. Even though smoking is not allowed you can almost imagine smoke hanging in the air blurring the edges of your vision. There is a small bar with a good range of refreshments. The night I was there the entertainment was Fred MacAulay and John Moloney and both were excellent. A brilliant venue and superb entertainment.
T. W.
Simply brilliant! Comedy acts throughout the week. Totally recommend Red Raw Monday 8.30pm for a few hours new comedians fresh jokes and some known comedians. Be their or be where! These comedians are part of my Monday night routine 😀😃😂
M. H.
The Stand is an Edinburgh institution, with a number of venues just off Princes St. Don't expect a great deal of creature comforts inside, however - this is a comedy club first and foremost, so it's wooden chairs, crammed into as small a space as possible. That being said, the comedy is regularly excellent, and the experience is unlike anywhere else in Edinburgh.
C. L.
A good discovery. This is a real small venue allowing the audience and the artists to be very close together. The doors open one hour before the show if you want to sit close to the scene don't hesitate to come early.
L. G.
Love this place. For those who haven't been if you want a seat get here a good 10-15 mins before doors open or a bit sharper if it's a comedy legend as it's first come - there's no reserving tables. Also phone/book online to guarantee entry as it sells out most weekends. And even if you have pre-booked your ticket it's still the same queue for everyone - no priority lane. If this sounds like a pain in the bahookie well that's just how they roll, they've been doing it this way for years so go with it and you'll have a great night, otherwise this ain't the place for you. Nights are always varied, staff are excellent, food is hearty and there are plenty of bar breaks. Hecklers be warned, this ain't no Jongleurs. Audience banter is permitted, but you go too far, too loud, too crazy you will be shutdown. This is the team behind The Stand events/venues during the Fringe so they know how to run their place and the calibre is always high. Not all the acts are gonna float your boat, but that's comedy. Compères have differing styles, so if in doubt (or you're just a big feartie) stay away from the front row.
H. H.
Cosy room with bags of character. Very friendly staff who are extremely helpful and sociable. Not a huge venue so popular acts can result in a busy crowd. Good beers and other drinks available too.
C. O.
A nice little comedy club near the center of Edinburgh. We went there on a thursday evening. The entrance was pretty cheap (I think around 7 GBP) . The comedians were very good. The Scots, they have a great sense of humour (although there was one Irish man performing as well). Some of the American visitors didn't like getting bashed and left in the first break. The food and the beers are also good (just like in the rest of Scotland). Long story short; We recommend The Stand Comedy Club!
C. V.
We dropped by for the free improv show on Sunday afternoon. This club is in a basement and is dark and crowded, but the show was pretty fun (although far from clean).! I'm sure a regular act would be even better, and would consider going again if in the area.
A. C.
Brilliant venue and service. Loved the Gary Delaney set and good use of PowerPoint slides! 🤣
D. K.
Always a great venue.
Sit at the front if you can and don't be a big scaredy cat. Getting the mickey taken out of you makes your visit more memorable. Honest!
M. B.
Great place for stand up comedy.
It was only £10 for a 2 hour show in a cosy friendly club.
It is however, quite small so if you want a seat. Get there on time.
N. M.
You have to really like stand up comedy if you want to go here. It's very student orientated. Located in a dimly lit basement. Staff are fine. Beers are keg lager. Very limited bottled beers. Food looks OK but carbo packed. Not the place for a quick pint and a chat.
L.
Brilliant night. Great acts and fabulous bar staff. Very warm and friendly
H. W.
A good night seeing Mark Thomas
P. M.
Fantastic live comedy venue. Such a small space, but makes for an intimate experience. Frequently hosts fairly big names. Shows on every night, and has a free improv show on a Sunday lunchtime.
A.
Dylan Moran preview gig. He was great as always. The Stand was packed as you would expect for a big name - get there at least 20 minutes before the doors open time if you want a seat. Staff friendly and efficient as always.
B. H.
Brilliant venue with some really decent acts on. Visited here with my girlfriend as a birthday present and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Drinks are pretty expensive but everything else is lovely.
D. H.
Going to a comedy club was the only thing on my to do list when we visited Edinburgh, I have to say the stand did not disappoint, the comedians were hilarious and the beer was good and reasonably priced. I have recommended the stand to anybody I know who visited Edinburgh since 👍
C. L.
Seating is super uncomfortable which made it hard to focus on the show when our backs hurt so bad. Overly crowded too. The show had its moments but was really up and down. Lots of sex jokes, lots of jokes only locals would understand. Not my favorite comedy club but it was ok
D. M.
Great way to spend a night, the best place in edinburgh to see stand up comedy. Atmosphere is perfect for stand up and is just the right size. Food is basic, ie chilli, nachos and burgers etc but delicious and goes well with the venue. Get there early to get seats in good location or be stuck at the side or have to stand.
A. S.
They said the door would open at 19:30 for the show at 20:30... and we arrived early to get seated places. At 19:27 all the places were taken. We were so tired that we didn't stay, so I don't know how the show was.
K. K.
Not a big venue but with a great atmosphere, the acts were great and we had a smashing night. As the other reviews say - it is a place to visit if you are in Edinburgh.
R. W.
Lovely staff and great acts - go see some brilliant comedy here!
R. H.
An Edinburgh institution The Stand is an intimate venue where you can come across up and coming acts and some big names.
As there's no reserved seating (and god help you if you try to move the seating) you need to arrive about a half-hour early to guarantee a good seat and order some of the seriously delicious food, the portions are BIG so bear that in mind, the nachos are always a winner and washed down with a beer sets you up nicely for the acts. The free Sunday improv show "whose lunch i it anyway?" is a great way to pass a few hours of an afternoon.
J. K. M.
Should take a star away for the house lager being flat but I won't, excellent venue with friendly staff and lovely atmosphere
M. C.
Good comedy club, quite small but cosy and friendly environment! Good comedy too, had a good laugh with all 4 sets!
D. G.
The Stand hosted a comedy night for The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home. Tickets were sold out. The staff are great and the atmosphere amazing. Best night out for ages.
A. R.
Five star all the time with excellent staff like Malcolm or Corr and you can never go wrong with Stu & Garry's Improv show with the large chilli nachos, The Stand's Cowboy beer and a barrel of laughs. A brilliant venue and best comedy club in Edinburgh. There is always a fantastic line up and Bright Club is never one to miss.
R. W.
Lovley place with amazing acts. We loved the experience totally and there was 14 of us. All loved it. Staff work hard to keep it in good order and the acts, torally amazing, made our evening was in histerics
a.
Great venue, seating is a little cramped but tbh that makes for a very good atmosphere!
M. C.
Best comedy club in Edinburgh by far! It's a must visit of your spending a night or more in the city! Cheep drinks and amazing comedy. Something different every night so something for everyone.
E. B.
Great night out at the Comedy club. I've visited here 3 times, great comedians, nachos & atmosphere every time!
Recommend arriving early to get a seat.
L. S.
They got a hell lot of rules for a comedy club. Great venue though.
S. S.
Nice wee space and good value for the comedy provided. Small space with limited seating so come before the doors open to get a seat. And eat beforehand. Snacks only available at the bar.
R. P.
Great place to see a show. Big names in an intimate venue. I would like to see more craft beer but the selection they have is pretty good. Monday night is amateur night which is cheap and fun.
J. T.
Classic place. Mark Thomas unbelievably good.
J. G.
A cracking Edinburgh institution! It's cosy but manages to provide an impressive number of seats and has everything you need from the well stocked bar through to the efficient kitchen. Highly recommended, but be prepared to join in with the jokes as you may well be sat right up at the front!
H. C.
Love this old traditional comedy club!
A. M.
Lovely staff, great comedy, great location. I think i will become a regular.
J. K.
Good choice for a funny night out. Occasionally the comedians can be hit and miss, but that's not really the fault of the venue. Becomes a comedy epicentre during the Edinburgh Fringe, though prices go through the roof.
a. m.
Forget other reviews, this is the skinny ! ( for a Sat Night )
Arrive about 30 mins before doors open to be front of the queue, by 7pm the line was about 20 people. Take a brolly just in case :)
NO deposit was taken from us incase of bad behaviour, ( as another reviewer said ) it doesn't happen !
If you want food, order as you go in when you get your drinks from the bar, let your wife/partner/ friend or whoever is with you get your seats ( we took table 2 right side by the wall, no one can stand behind or infront, next to stage door but opposite side to the loo )
Lets face it, it's basic, but that's the whole point, what do you expect for the price, the moaners who expect the Apollo should give this a miss, however if you want a REAL night of raw comedy this is the place to go.
My wife and i came here looking for a great night out of down to earth comedy and got a FANTASTIC night of comedy, my wife even won the prize draw at the end of the night aswell !
If you let the acts do their job it makes the evening even better, they don't need anyone to heckle, ( just one drunk lady ) they give a brilliant performance without it, we've never laughed so much......really !
The trip to the loo's is an experience and quite hillarious when you get talking to someone who's had a tipple too much, but hey that's the charm of the club.
Overall money well spent, when we visit Edinburgh again, the Stand is top of our list of places to go.
Full marks to all the Staff and Performers on Saturday 26th Jan 13
N. B.
Great venue for a comedy night out. Pre book and get there EARLY if you want a seat. Great acts and a good bar
T. B.
It made me laugh. So bad, so good!
J. M.
Excellent entertainment and value for money. Will return every time we visit Edinburgh.
J. R.
Small, intimate venue limited table spaces and some seats to the back. No disability access I could see as it's down in a basement. First time there, OK, staff pleasant
J. W.
My partner and I had a great night, was a cozy place with a, lot of character.
L. P.
Andrew Maxwell was great. Basement room bit of a crush old fashioned needs a lick of paint.....best comedy venue Edinburgh. Atmosphere is fantastic.
C. M.
Went along for the Monday comedy night. Very entertaining and a lot of great acts on the bill. All for £3!!! Will definitely be coming back
J.
Visited here for a fringe show, excellent venue with really nice staff. Can't wait to come back.
R. C.
Great atmosphere , had a great night with my partner drinking quality beers and having good fun with the people who were there. Suitable for friends or couples looking for a chill place to relax
j.
wonderful venue, top class comedy and the food is lovely too. Always a great atmosphere whether you're looking for a couples night out or a night with friends
P. B.
Loved the Friday night show. All 4 comedians and compere excellent. Jamie McDonald was fabulous. Had food there before the show. Very tasty chilli 🌞
D. S.
Fun venue, had a great laugh and night out on a Saturday. Average beer selection, make sure you get there at least an hour early if you want a seat
J. R.
Crammed like a rat into a corner as the wall gradually became slicker and moister from the condensing body fluids of the 58974635 other patrons. By the end of the night we were a single amorphous blob of sweat and beer. A+, would go again
P. “. H.
Food was nice, comedy was good - great space!
D. M.
Great experience, personal, warming, and most importantly very entertaining!
b. j.
A small intimate place in Edinburgh's George Street where you can see many different comedians. A lot of famous comedians have played here and I believe they open Mike nights for aspiring or young up and coming comedy artists to play in front of a live audience
L. V.
Very entertaining, great comedy. Go early though to get a seat! And sit near the front only, if you're ready to get picked on! Overall very fun experience, will go again!
J. M.
Comedy eas great seating was not good far to close to other people
L. S.
Our visit on Monday was amazing! What a way to support new talent! Well worth the visit
K.
Good atmosphere, seating arrangement quite uncomfortable at sold out nights, but I guess this is standard at comedy clubs? Great bookings and top notch comedians with fast service at bar.
N. T.
Fantastic venue and really friendly staff!
V. S.
Saw a great show last weekend. We saw Fred Macaulay and John Moloney. They were both very good but I think John Moloney definitely had the edge. He was hilarious.
N. P.
Really friendly staff; plenty of alcohol & a night of stand up comedy - what more could one wish for?!
Not a large seating area so arrive early of you want to be seated.
T. A.
Really good line up of acts, but not a comfortable environment to sit for over 2 hours in. Sitting on a foot stool for that long makes you want the show to be over. Come early if you want a seat and a table.
J. L.
Might be biased. But love this place as a someone who used to work here and as an occasional customer. Usually a good mixture of acts depending on the show. Bound to find a comedian that you like.
J. M.
Good acts, fairly priced drink, seating could have been better was sat in the corner with not very good views. But me n the wife laughed all night.
G. M.
Classic comedy venue. Arrive early for the bigger acts to ensure a seat. Nearly always enough bar staff to serve you quickly.
N. Y.
A sewage flood in the toilets was the only thing keeping this from 5 stars. Good club, funny comedians, helpful staff.
D. H.
Good fun. Cheap to get in. Some funny comedians but none that will be famous anytime soon. Decent IPA but the lager was piss poor.
R. L.
Brilliant venue, excellent staff and always a wonderful lineup of comedians!
B. D.
Absalutly fabulous completely start to finish laughed my socks off limited drought larger but who cares when ur sides ake from laughter
D. H.
Great little venue! Just gets a bit hot. I was in Stand 3&4 and the way out is really inconvenient but it's a wonderful place all the same.
J. Z.
Intimate comedy venue that sets the standard in Edinburgh. Basement bar setting with loose seating around small tables. A low ceiling and a small, close stage.
D. J. G. (.
Been years since I've been there but it was a great night with some decent comedians. Good drink and not expensive.
N. S. M. B.
Great fun, could do with a bit of money spending on it! They stop serving food at 8.30.... be warned to get there early if you don't want to have to sit on a stool!
D. M.
Good venue, friendly staff
G. N.
Good for a fun night out. Get there early if you plan to have food. The portions are huge but the tables are small and limited in number.
H. M.
Lovely staff, very well run, ethical, great environment, and fantastic shows to see. Can get a bit hot but its just a great place to go to for whatever occasion
N. C.
First class comedy for LGBT Youth Scotland benefit fundraiser. Staff go the extra mile to be courteous, friendly and inclusive. Magical !
C. B.

Stewart Lee is a comedy genius.

D. M.
Clinton Baptiste, need I say more. Great intimate club and a decent beer or 2...
@realclintonb
D. G.
Went for their Thursday night show and it was great, loved all the acts and the compare and the chili nachos were amazing.
F.
Went to a sunday night comedy show, really good acts and lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.
P. G.
The best comedy venue in Scotland, year after year. Arrive early to get a seat as the venue allows standing (which is a pain during an hour / 90 min show).
H. M.
Went here with my boyfriend had a lovely night but would recommend arriving early if you want a seat and booking in advance if you plan to go here.
A. M.
The best comedy venue in Edinburgh. Easily. Very welcoming staff.
P. H.
Great night. Friendly staff.Be early! Very cosy makes for intimate evening but seating scarce for late comers.Would recommend :-D
D. K.
The venue was very basic and the seating was cramped. It was ok for the short show that we saw however a show longer than an hour would be difficult.
S. P.
Good venue for comedy gigs. Not that big, but cosy. Come early if you want a seat.
C. W.
Great comedy, a chilled night with 5 amazing comedians. Price was so reasonable for what you got to enjoy 😁🎉
S. M.
Went for political animal with Andy schultzman....was a pretty decent night with some good highly intellectual jokes.
Outside of the fringe it's a pretty great place for outstanding comedy nights.
E. S.
Fun atmosphere and amazing gigs! Had a great laugh, definitely coming here again if I visit Edinburgh another time!
S. v. S.
Great place for comedy, when buying tickets keep in mind to come 2 hours before the show to get a seat on a busy night. Otherwise you'll be standing at the stand.
t. v.
Been a few times, never been disappointed food really lovely as well, would highly recommend, staff really welcoming will definitely go back again and again.
r.
Small, tightly packed wee club. Very serious about their comedy.
D. P.
Great wee comedy club, I couldn't get the wifi to work though, so no drinkies 😪
W. G.
Great intimate venue for standup comedy. Has a bar and decent food also available before the show starts
D. M.
Went to see Paul Sinha , better known as The Sinha Man from the chase. He was just brilliant cracking jokes about everything he kept goibg for solid hour . Well worth the money.
P. C.
Had a fantastic night once the acts came on, problem for me was having to be there 2 hours before to get a seat which turned out to be a small backless stool and as I'm over 6ft tall it soon got uncomfortable
t. d.
Great venue. Friendly staff good food and decent drink prices, good chance of having a great night here ..
K. G.
Had to stand and queue not in the correct order of waiting time (wsited a while before others). Kevin bridges was class
C. S.
Great venue, plenty of variety in regards to the acts so there is always someone new to go and see.
e. l.
Great night of entertainment. Small venue with lots of people all ready to enjoy themselves.
W. F.
A really hilarious and brilliant comedy experience.
I recommend getting in early to get a seat, since it can fill up quite quickly
C. S.
The venue is a bit worn out and needs a clean. The show was great though and the intimate feel was fun.
P. C.
Intimate and cosy, an ideal venue for stand up, you're never far from the act or indeed the bar, well worth a visit.
D. B. A.
Laughed from start to finish, the compare was a character and the 5 acts I saw were all good enough for Prime Time TV.
K. P.
Fantastic little find, had such a fun night at Red Raw 👌🏻
I. T.
Great entertainment... compere really funny. Drinks reasonably priced. Well worth a visit
B. C.
Very very good excellent acts a Thursday night is also a lil cheaper I thoroughly enjoyed it
E. M.
Really awesome vibe here - had a great night
S. K.
Had a fantastic night Tez Ilyas was on form. Staff were excellent
t.
Great night. Different to what they had billed. But a really good night all the same. Just dropped in on the off chance well worth it.
D. M.
Friday night show was great, nice atmosphere and food and drink wasn't to expensive, will definitely be back 😁
D. T.
Great set, hilarious comics (I enjoyed everyone that came on stage), great beer selection. I’d come again!
D. F. (.
First time going to a comedy club, and was a great experience. Entertaining, comfortable, and good value.
B. F.
Improv with Stu and Gary was fantastic. Highly recommend going! We didn't stop laughing.
P. B.
It's in a wee basement that unassuming from the outside but the staff and the space are perfect for what it is!! You want to see quality acts in a uninhibited space, go to the stand!
P. H.
It's an odd-shaped room, and you need to get there before the time stated on the tickets if you want a decent seat.

If only more of Edinburgh's actual restaurants served food to the standard of this comedy club that, at weekends, does food "on the side".
