Reviews of Coila Ceilidh Band

Many thanks to Coila for playing at our wedding at St. Mungo's Museum in Glasgow. They were extremely helpful and communicative throughout the whole process, even providing us with advice and training material for our first dance. The band set up with plenty of time on the day, despite issues with parking at the venue, and provided their own sound equipment.
The calling was great and they managed to encourage our English, American and Mexican guests to get up and join in with the Scottish contingent. After the ceilidh, the band ran a great wedding disco, providing a selection of their recommended party bangers with some Spanish-language equivalents.
I would definitely recommend the band in the future. Thanks again for the great night!

We booked Coila to play at our wedding in Dunblane in June.
I have played fiddle for almost 2 decades and in that time have both taken part in and played at countless ceilidhs, I know what seperates a good celeidh from a bad one and with that being said, Coila is one of, if not the best ceilidh band I have ever had the pleasure to dance to. My wife and I both agree that they absolutely made our already fantastic wedding that much better.
The choice of dances is well structured, the slower dances happen at just the right time to let people catch their breath after the faster ones. Alistair (The fiddle player and also caller) was very good at walking the newer people through the steps and the time taken to organise the chaos that is dozens of drunk adults into an "orderly" dancing group was impressively quick. Also, several times during the night someone made a request and the band were more than happy to accomodate them.
The quality of music is incredible and the skill and exprience of the band is immediately obvious. From the very first dance there isn't a single note out of place and on the rare occasion I wasn't dancing, it was a pleasure to sit and listen to the wonderful Scottish music that filled the room.
The other guests were singing their praises all evening and even now, the Ceilidh is brought up as a wonderful ending to a wonderful day. We cannot thank Coila enough for their part in helping us start our married life and cannot recommend them enough to anyone looking for the perfect Ceilidh.

Coila provided the entertainment for our wedding reception on a gloriously sunny summer Sunday this June. They were everything you could hope for from a ceilidh band and more. In advance of the day Alastair was exceptionally quick to return emails and was happy to take on all of our requests while providing advice on things like how to structure the evening. On the day they arrived and were set up in plenty of time.
Most importantly though they played a great set of ceilidh dances for the first half of the evening – they were called well – sounded great and had the dance floor full the whole time. They were flexible enough to extend the ceilidh portion of the evening until after the buffet (their suggestion in fact) ensuring the second half of the evening got off to a great start as well. The ceilidh finished with an Orcadian Strip the Willow (our favourite) it’s surely impossible not to have a great time during that particular dance!
Following the ceilidh we finished the night with a disco – again the dance floor was full throughout and in particular for Pulp’s Common People – what a song!! It was without doubt the best day of our lives and in no small part that was thanks to the guys that make up Coila. They provided exactly what we wanted from a ceilidh band – Great music and a full dance floor at a very reasonable price – we highly recommend you check them out!

A huge thank you to Coila for the fantastic job you did – especially with such a non learning continental crowd!! It’s funny, I came across the first or second email that I sent you and said I would be back in touch if Jen and Jimmy thought that you were the right band for them. You certainly were the right band and gave everybody a fantastic memory of a Scottish wedding. Even though the French and Belgium’s either struggled with or disregarded the instructions they all though it was fantastic and we have had so many positive comments. I hope that I come across you again at some other function so that I can enjoy your playing again. I will certainly be recommending Coila in the future. Top class ceilidh band!

A really fantastic evening to celebrate my sister's 50th birthday, made extra special by Coila Ceilidh band. Communication was easy, the music was exceptional, these guys are great at explaining the steps and very easy going. Reasonably priced. Highly recommend!!

Alastair and his band have now played for us on two occasions. The first, our son’s Scottish wedding reception, the English bit was done down south - no reels! The second was our 50th wedding anniversary. A fabulous night of reels for a party of committed reelers no caller needed (though Alastair will do so if necessary), just dance after dance played faultlessly with skill and enthusiasm. He even adjusted the Foursome specially to incorporate the extra bars we like to include!! As The Bard had it ‘The mirth and fun grew fast and furious .. the dancers quick and quicker flew; They reeled, they set, they crossed, they cleekit’ - I’ll skip the ‘swat and reekit’ bit but you might get the general idea!
Alastair is a virtuoso player, teacher and composer of enormous talent but also plays reels and jigs with the same consummate skill and just as fast and furious as anyone could wish. He and his band bring a tangible sense of party and fun to the gathering even before the first chord is struck. The air was buzzing with anticipation and we were not disappointed!
Professional to a degree, arriving in plenty of time to set up, meeting our every request and suggestion, plenty of party patter and playing till the last gasp. Good natured and good fun, and very smiley 😊, Coila really is the business. We’ve been dancing reels for decades and these boys can play! As far as this family of demon reelers is concerned, no one else will do. Thank you Alastair, Ian and Gavin.
With kindest regards,
Austin, Felicity and the rest of the demons!!

10/10. They were brilliant. Such lovely, lovely guys. So professional and friendly. Music was first class, the dance calling was perfect (and not annoying, which I find it often can be! They really read the room to see how much was needed), and they always got back to us promptly, no matter how small the query. The DJ part was really good too. Couldn't recommend them enough. THANK YOU guys.
