Reviews of Hootananny Brixton
M. P.
Love this place. Went to a swing and bass night there and one of the first live bands I’ve seen since lockdown. One of my favourite night out! Brilliant vibe, banging jerk chicken stall outside, solid smoking area, good crowd and amazing tunes - can’t fault the place!
L. M.
Fantastic set up. Cheap. Great staff. Rooms and "bunk" beds are great. Quiet after 3am Venue was a little small but We would definitely stay again. Easy access to main and local attractions. Bus stop just outside or a small walk to the a tube station.
We are very happy people from NORTH WALES 🏴 🏴
C. S.
Nice venue for concerts and a drink. You can get food from 2 stands outside the bar, Caribbean food and burgers type also. No one cleans the tables as service is at the bar only...
S. S.
A great venue, lovely staff and brilliant music!
I came here supporting an artist recently and had the best time, the venue is quirky, staff were so polite and professional and made this a really good experience.
The Sauce Live showcase drew in an amazing crowd, and resident DJ's provided nice vibes!
Definitely returning for the next one!
T. D.
Top venue. Enjoyed the live music but plenty of space to relax outside too. Would have liked an extra pool table. Shame my mate Danny couldn't handle it.
C. D.
Love this place. Funky music, brilliant atmosphere and great location with a big garden. A hostel is attached which is useful if your from out of town. Can't wait to go back.
J.
This venue is a must if you are in London ! The quality of the artist is always superb! DJs , music night is definitely something amazing, great vibe ! Great food, bar stuff friendly and affordable drinks ! There is nothing I don’t like about Hootananny!
C. E.
Friendly staff, clean and smart rooms. Lockers a but small, but good value overall.
Only criticism is that it was made clear that the place only opens at 2pm, not just check in.
K. D.
I went to the reggae night they have every Thursday. If you like your reggae and live bands, then this is the place for you to be. The house band are wicked. £5 a pint too (which is cheap for South London nowadays.
R. G. (.
It was fantaaaaaastic! I went on a Thursday night and there were live reggae artists as well as guest doing poetry. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Danced and clapped all night.
A. P.
Really love this venue, live music, good vibes, Not much more to say really.
Only two small negatives would be venue temperature when full capacity and the stickiness of the floor.
D. N.
Live bands most nights and open till late. Large outside area with heated canopies. Gets very busy weekends so be prepared to queue. Standard selection of beers, wines and spirits.
j. D.
My daughters band, sircurse recently played at hootanannies, they were very well received, friendly folk all around, the lady cooks outside did a lovely job of cooking tasty food, despite the freezing eve, the regular locals were nice folk, a great venue with soul, good security from the guys, thank you, the only down was a staff member being off to my daughter, having asked if she could have some boiling hot water, pity it was too much an ask, overall v pleasent,
d. y.
A throw back to how live music pubs used to be, vibrant, edgy an a bit crazy. The food stalls mean ya can get a good feed too.
M. T.
Great music venue. Drinks prices vary depending on who serves you. Toilets need a wide berth. Bar staff very rude. Not very presentable looking either
L. B.
Awesome place with cheap drinks and and amazing vibe, live music and delicious food, will be coming back
M. M.
I love Hootananny, specially the Movimientos nights. Long life for this authentic Brixton venue.
T. S.
Good bands, too crowded with sticky floors.
E. S.
Always a fun evening here. Plenty of indoor and outdoor space, and always seems to be something going on in the venue.
J. H. L.
Good vibes. Just the right crowd. Affordable drinks. Music 5star because it's live.
S. T.
Best experience of a great night out! Great venue, live, class acts, fabulous folks and irie vibes!!
E. S.
Still a great place, live music, late close. Always good for an after party if you're at Brixton academy earlier in the night
A. D.
Been here a few times now and always a great place to stay
K. F.
Nice place with live music inside and good truck in the terrace. I had a tasty hamburger.
N. R.
Decent place and location, friendly staff and they provide lockers for valuables. Would definitely use again.
E.
Great live music venue with spacious outside seating and food vendors.
L. M.
It was a Fantastic event. Happy Earth-strong to Most Honourable Andrew Sloughly. Nuff Love ❤
A. B.
Best for outdoor chill ( nice chill spot) and proper indoor musical ambience - root rock reggae and other genres.
D. E.
They shouldn’t be allowed to function with such a poor air ventilation system. Music and general vibe is great but feels like a sauna in there…
N. M.
Amazing venue with brilliant garden space, distanced tables, some with gazebos and heaters - we felt like we had our own private booth! Table service was excellent and such friendly staff and security. Oh and delicious food. Cannot recommend this place enough. Well worth the visit!✨☀️👏🏼
N. K.
Lovely atmosphere and hospitable staff. Good music and vibes all round.
A. E.
Great venue and a amazing night for mates wetting the baby’s head.
m. R.
The bar staffs were busy but it didn't excuse the fact they paid attention to one area of the bar also don't put your drink down the cleaners will take it before you know it.
Party was nice atmosphere was amazing.
R. R.
Great atmosphere in the beer garden, food was great. But not impressed by the service the bar staff was rude. We spent a lot of money buying rounds of drink. And the bar staff was unhelpful.
S. S.
Great little venue with large outside space mostly covered with gazebos. Air-con could do with a bit more power, but otherwise difficult to fault.
c. w.
Great place to go for some live music and reasonably priced beers..
V.
It was a nice evening. It was a little crowded. We had booked a table which was ready for us but it was dirty and had not been wiped before we arrived. They saw this when we sat down but nobody did anything to clean it. I ordered a whiskey and asked for no ice. Just as it is. It came with ice. I told the staff and he was nice and apologetic and replaced it. My friends got lagers and ciders that were flat and the same thing happened with their drinks. They did get them replaced but it was just a little bit irritating that it kept happening.
C. G.
Great live music, buzzing atmosphere, reasonably priced drinks, especially for that time of the day.
C. W.
I've been informed multiple times this is a South London institution, and it's lucky we had reservations for a friend's birthday because the queue as we were walking in was something else. Book in advance lest you be waiting outside for a while!
The food was amazing and drinks were good, decent turn-around from the extremely friendly staff although it felt a bit chaotic and drinks were going this way and that at points, i did have to show my receipt for an order that never arrived (but it really was very busy). Also the website you have to QR code scan to use for drinks was a bit of a pain, quite a lot of preliminary information to provide and steps to go through before you can actually order a drink, which when you're thirsty and have just sat down can be quite a pain.
The outdoor area was lovely with rain-protection and heating, overall a very fun time was had but do make sure to book and keep an eye on when your drinks should have arrived. They were also playing some fire reggae and i have to say the music in general was simply fantastic, probably one of my favourite things about this place (if you like reggae this is the drinking spot for you trust me!!!).
Also it's in Brixton which is just a plus in itself, right next to a sainsburys too if you need to grab some cigs or even booze for an after-party.
N. P.
Great place to meet friends, drink, socialise and see a gig!
E. O.
Happy hour at Hootananny's is always amazing, can't go wrong with a pint for £2.50 inside of London! Ordered the cheese and bacon burger today and can honestly say it was one of the tastiest burgers I've ever eaten, definetly in the top 10! Considering my love for burgers that's a massive compliment! The chef had issues with his fryer so even though chips weren't available a replacement of tortilla chips was provided and was exactly the right SIDE dish. The staff are always exceptional when I visit and seem genuinly happy to help and to be at work. Leonnie and Adderly are fantastic members of the team and always make me smile and ensure I keep returning. 5* venue would definitely recommend a visit!!
S. L.
Great independent music venue that has hosted all the stars of reggae.
E. G.
Went to the Bob Marley Revival
The night was vibing worth a Tuesday night out .
C. B.
The food is unreal and the drinks are reasonably priced, with a large amount of staff to ensure you're never waiting too long for a drink. Would definitely recommend as a place to grab a bite and a beer.
L. A.
Amazing concert with pagan speed folk band Perkelt!
N. S.
Great atmosphere and great staff. One of best places to go in Brixton.
F. H. M.
I went two times to play with the band and crew is fantastic. I love the ambience and if you like roots and/or electric music Hootananny it's a must.
T. M.
Busy and bustling it’s a great place to enjoy a few drinks. ‘Walk ins’ only at the moment so a great spot if you haven’t booked anywhere and fancy a pint.
A.
Gosh I miss this place soo much! Before covid Hootannany Brixton used to be our second home, we can't wait to be back there. Best live music in London, reggea, ska.. all kind of live music from around the world with the best vibes.
The food from the beer garden is also amazing, oven baked pizza, Mexican food and incredible Jamaican chicken.
Missing you all! ❤️
J. L.
Had a great night. Great bands and staff were lovely
S. C.
It was great to see a life music gig after a year of lockdown and it was understanding that rules had to be put in place to protect everyone however I believe that it was probably too stressful for the staff as everyone was quite agitated. At first the guy who we payed the tickets. Then my friend wanted to sit next to me and withing one second a lady from security arrived telling her in a very rude way :"move!" my friend wanted to grab her belonging and said :"one second" and the lady started to shout :"now!" my friend was starlet and told her to relax. They ended up in having an argument. During the whole gig this lady bodyguard was behaving like a policeman whatching everyone if someone has too much fun, policing people. The atmosphere wasn't that pleasant like in old days in precovid. I don't know. If the measurements is too stressful for the staff and you can't really have fun what's the point of going. Feeling guilty for enjoying yourself?
V. L.
We went quit late to finish off celebrating our friends birthday but overall I know it a good pub the vibes is nice on a Friday and Saturday
A. W.
This is the spot. Really good place for a drink and a dance.
D. C.
I absolutely love this place. They are very hot on keeping everyone covid secure. They got amazing food stalls there, great atmosphere, every time I’ve been.
B. S.
Great bar/ live music venue. Friendly patrons and regular free music nights. Loads of seating. Two pool tables. Food and snacks are good. Beer selection is great. The staff are lovely and there's a great outdoor are with plenty of seating. Popular with locals, as well as travellers.
M. N.
The hootenanny is a nice place, but they could do more to make patrons comfortable during social distancing. They blasted music, so you had to shout and lean across the bar to order drinks, and none of the staff were wearing masks. They had security doing their best, but people had to pass through the bar queue to go to the toilet. A few people had too much to drink and were ignoring all social distancing rules.
T. S.
Amazing brass bands playing when I went for a wonderland event. The venue has an amazing dance floor as well as a large section for sitting, playing pool, etc. Also has an affordable cloak room and food stands in the large outdoor area. The only slight downfall is that the drinks can be expensive however they are not more expensive than most bars in London.
A. G. H. S.
Unpretentious crowd, brilliant music, professional and fast bar staff, very good vibes.
A. S.
A great night out for a decent price. They host some very good shows with really good bands and DJs. Only issues I have with this place is the security and the space. The security are really rude and unfriendly and the dance floor is just a little small so you're packed like sardines if you want to go for a dance.
H. M.
Good live music venue. Decent sized capacity. They could do with upgrading/modernising their sound system and stage monitors. Usually several acts on a night. A fair price for a London pint. They usually have a choice of pizza, burritos & Caribbean food in the garden.
D. A.
Very good live music and waitress bar service good outdoor area and food ,made for an enjoyable evening very good value for money
K. K.
Good vibes. The white dj hes really good and for your information Kurdistan is in Iraq!
Everyone from security to waiters/waitresses were all lovely, respectful and i defo would recommend here for future social gatherings for family and friends! Not children though!
r.
Brilliant place for live entertainment. Relaxed atmosphere. No intimidating feel. Nothing posh or upmarket, no airs n graces, it is what it is, & does what it does. Old fashioned Pub like in one half, & cozy personal feel stage area & bar in other half. Outside space for smoking, sitting, chatting, eating, or whatever. They should have venues like this all over the place. Parking is only available on streets outside.
H. F. (.
Pretty standard pub with live music. The quality varies depending on who is performing. There's a few pool tables too so good for a game of pool with some mates. Outside areas large enough for multiple groups to exist without too much barging lol
J. B.
Awesome venue. Pay to get in after a certain time but worth it. Food stalls outside within the venue - Caribbean food and Mexican grill was provided when we went there. Lighting is great for the acts and the vibe is awesome inside. The venue is split into an old style pub with three pool tables and then you walk through and you are in the live music bit. So great if you want both. Love it!
K. W. S.
Brilliant vibes. Fast and friendly service. Music was awesome! Well worth the trip to Brixton
D. M.
Great place to chill and enjoy yourself. Wonderful utmosphere.
D. X.
Venue has a much friendlier vibe than last time I visited, 5 years ago. Good selection of food and drink and a great team
N. U.
I went to an comedy show here and it was such a good time. I'd recommend coming here for a laugh and an easy night.
They also have live performances as well. Personally, I would come for the comedy and then take the party elsewhere. This isn't really the vibe to go clubbing or dance much.
N. C.
Great local venue supporting local talent
D. P.
Great place for music every night. Can also play pool and there is food. But doesnt cater for ale/bitter drinkers anymore and limited other options. Other beers a bit dearer than elsewhere nearby.
C. G.
Excellent party venue, they have different events all the time. From Comedy to Live Bands... Great Vibe & friendly people. Brilliant garden space in the summer. Staff are lovely. Food is good. Community spirit, so it’s also a great place if you local. Never stayed in the hostel but if staying be warned Pub open till 3am!!!
I. K.
Brilliant place for a chilled drink. They offer street food and there are live bands. Went on a Friday night and had a great time. Both the inside and the outside areas are cool. Some security people working there were a bit rude but aside from that it was a cracking night. Last, I was advised to go before 10pm to avoid paying a fiver to get in.
T. A.
Always love this place. There's food - Mexican and Jamaican. There's drinks and cocktails. There's also live music most nights and seating area outside. There's a clock room too and two toilets on both sides of the building. Very colourful and brings in a trendy crowed. The price here isn't too steap either
H. H.
I really like this place. I’ve had some great nights here. They have a big room for gigs and comedy night with a good sound set up and a dance floor. They set up tables and candles for comedy. In another room there are 3 pool tables and ample seating. Good sized beer yard (no grass) to the front where they often set up a good variety of street food at the weekends. The my charge to get in after about 10 on the weekends but the place is well staffed and it feels safe for being so close to Brixton. This place is also open later than most. Beer selection is limited which is where the 5th star has gone
C. C.
Great place for a cheap and cheerful stop over. Really friendly and accommodating staff. Lovely free dinner on a Friday. Bar can get busy and noisy on a weekend. Shared showers might not suit everyone but for the price can't ask for better really
X. A.
Great place to watch live music
S. W.
really fun vibe! Totally rammed occasionally
K. A.
A flavour of how parts of Brixton were twenty years ago. Dark, grungy and very much a throw back to how live music pubs had been for decades.
A very hip place for a young crowd with pool tables and a great live music stage.
The drinks are inexpensive and parking on the side streets is very easy street 6.30pm
E. D.
Great night, however extremely busy which meant little chance of seeing bands due to the layout the ground floor which means there's a bottleneck near the stage when things get super busy. Enjoyed the big garden on what was a very warm night.
I. S.
Sick night out, great music and food till late
M. C. N. M.
Amazing space. More towards the reagge side of the spectrum in terms of music and looks. There is a massive beer garden where you can find different food options during the night. Inside the venue is huge with a bar and chilling area and another side with a performance space
M.
Great club with good music and drink. Check which band is playing what music. The band we saw were great musicians but I would have expected there music as background not night club.
S. Q.
Nicely shabby chic roomy pub in Brixton with a feeling of a local institution. Hosts live music and local fiction author readings. Book Bash is a very pleasant institution and a good low-key night out for lovers of emerging fiction live readings. Decent outdoor space for slightly grimy summer drinking
G. C.
Old fashion pup with a big front garden, tasty food food cooked right in front of you . Drinking and eating there is affordable. Lovely atmosphere . I will definitely visit it again.
V. F.
I enjoyed the live band to afro beat and soft rock on a night out. I had only drinks although there was some Afro Caribbean food being sold outdoors as well as outdoor sitting. Would recommend this place if you love African music and food.
j. j.
It offers a mix bag of things, live music, food, alcohol, pool tables, beer garden, djs etc.. interesting atmosphere all round but you never can tell whether the atmosphere will be good or not.. can be unpredictable depending on people on the day but I've had some great times there.
F. P.
A spacious pub with good staff, a varied menu and a colourful decoration
C. G. J.
A diverse space that brilliantly combines a lively performance room with a large yet cozy pub and a market style social area.
Great drinks selection (they serve still cider here!), tasty street food and enjoyable performances.
I've been here a couple of times and will definitely be back soon.
V.
Great live music. Jammin peeps. Will be back 100%
k. p.
Absolutely amazing. Different food stalls to choose from. Tried pizza and tacos. Both delicious. And the music. Live bands spot on. We danced so much. Legs hurt the next day.
M. P.
Brilliant place and perfect if you're seeing a gig at the O2 Brixton. Lively, friendly and really safe. Couldn't suggest it more for somewhere to stay. As a bar and place for entertainment it's also great fun, with friendly staff and just an overall fun atmosphere.
C. A.
The Hootananny is a Brixton institution that has so far survived the gentrification happening down the hill. It's large no-nonsense pub venue that puts on great live music and comedy events. The main dancehall gets raucous on a friday and saturday with broad range of punters. They're a friendly crowd. Highly recommended. During the week and during the day it's a good place for quiet pint and a game of pool.
A. N.
One of the last bulwark of authenticity in Brixton. Top marks to Giorgia (bar manager) for her kindness and Dave (sound engineer) for his professionalism. Came here, as person of the industry, to borrow some music equipment and I was met with an incredibly huge will to help. Have been here also many time as customer and always had a banging night.
K. B. (.
My first time performing with a live band(Maximum heights Band) in front of a live audience in the Britain's got Reggae competition. I enjoyed the whole vibes from start to finish. Hootananny is definitely the place to go for all your reggae events in London.
M. G.
Hootanany love it you can play pool they have 3 tables all age groups. Live band's Reggae Nite on Thursday friendly staff and security after 9pm depending on what band is on you pay from 3.00. They have beer garden west Indian food on Thursdays and wood fire pizzas. Cocktails hour 5 till 7 not lot to choose from sadly. Security and staff friendly and professional.
R. C.
I guess it is a good place to go listen to some varied and good music but I last went to the pub only and it is a wide empty space with a few seats and tables. The toilets are "open" to this area and the smell floats through... not a nice place to eat a late delivered not very tasty burrito...
J. S.
Great venue with a really cool feel to it. I love the outside area as well as the stage area I side. The food from the vendor outside was really good. The staff are friendly and laid back. My only criticism and the reason I did not give 5 stars would be the pint of Guinness was not pulled properly. The barman left the pint alone and left the Guinness pouring into the glass. Anybody who knows how to pour a proper pint of Guinness would never do that. If your going to serve Guinness pull the pints properly.
B. P.
Great music pub, varied programme of events every week. Reasonable prices on drinks and snacks. Pool tables. Security. Parking in nearby streets. Staff helpful and friendly.
M. T.
Atmosphere was good music excellent
Its a shame we could not really hear the live music outside
S. T.
Great venue with amazing acoustics for 'live' bands! Great mix of people from all walks of life. Bar staff are friendly and security are highly visible at all times. Will deffo visit again.
A. S.
It’s a fun time, late night place where sorrows get drowned and spirits get lifted. A great place to go when there is live music or the weather is warm enough to sit in the large beer garden. They serve food outside too which is nice.
E.
Great atmosphere, well priced drinks and the food (Mexican and Jamaican) tastes amazingly. Faultless!
R. M.
The best place in London to enjoy live music 7 days per week! Always when you don't know where to go out, this is the place. There is always something cool going on. It's the best check before going to know what is going on. But usually every night you can enjoy different kind of music styles. The beer has a really nice price also.
B. A.
Best night of dancing I’ve had in a long, long time. The bands when I went on July 7th were ska/swing/Balkan fusions (Los Kamer was fantastic!). The sets were great because I was alone, and I felt comfortable dancing with swing steps, free form, or just jumping up and down! Everyone was there to listen and dance, and no one took themselves too seriously. They also had tacos and pizza pop ups in the beer garden, and they have pool tables in the back.
One warning: it gets VERY hot inside, but luckily they have a giant outdoor area, which is great for cooling off between sets. They have free bag/coat check so you can enjoy the dancing, so I would recommend bringing a change of clothes to wear after yours are soaked from dancing!
I think* entrance is free before 10pm.
I will try to come back every time I’m in London.
E. B.
The outside area has been a godsend during the world cup, and the screen is really good even when the sun is bright. Obviously it gets crazy busy whenever a game is on but that's to be expected. My major issue with this place is how miserable the staff are, one woman in particular. A couple of weeks ago I was there and it wasn't busy at all, and she didn't say a single word to me when I was ordering and paying - I get its hot but seriously try and be a bit more chatty. Not a big deal at all when the outside area is so good but cheer up, come one!
M. U.
Two bar venue with a large room dedicated for live music. There's music most nights and some good bands to enjoy (many with a reggae/African tilt) but the surly bouncers and ID checks take a lot of the pleasure out of the place.
A. W.
Staff super welcoming, happy hour is the bomb and dwells round the corner from where I live. What more can u ask for?!!
H. C.
The room is spacious (6-bed female dorm) and the bed is clean and tidy. Kitchen is big enough and with everything you need, but not quite clean during dinner time, but I understand it is the problem of the tenants here. I don't quite like the bathroom as it is small and have not much place for you to hang the clothes.
R. P.
The food was so nice outside, spontaneous trip on a Friday Eve for a boogie and drinks .. annoyingly some guy tried to steal from me, I felt a tug at my bag and there was a guy unzipping it, my reflexes were not intact if they had been I would of punched him or thrown my drink on him, all my years living in London that's never happened to me before, it really messed with the rest of my night, really uncool. Part from that I recommend the venue for live bands and lovely chicken outside.
G. G.
A fantastic night of music, performance and culture. If you want to experience why Reggae music has been given heritage status Cecil Ruben's Hootananny is one of the ambassadorships of the enlightenment, upliftment and love, and not to be missed.
N. F.
I love this place, great live music venue, sound is good and staff are friendly and helpful. Full of character and good vibes. One of my favourite places to visit in Brixton as it has not been spoilt by the gentrification yet. One of the classic old school English pubs, with history and good Carribbean food.
D. S. d. R.
Great place with a great vibe. Live music and outside seating where food is served until late for this who get the munchies.
The atmosphere is relaxed and there is no dress code, and for a club that opens late and offers live gigs he £5 entry price is a gift, compared to most bars charging a tenner for none of the above.
B. S.
Bingo night was awesome. The host was funny, sassy and very interactive with the crowd. Fun place to stop in and have a drink. I also read that Freddie Mercury took princess Di here once....
R. A. B.
Fairly cheap. Wasnt sure when I went if it was open mic or just not a great band but the vibe was still ok. Way too loud if you wanted to chat inside but the outside is nice.
C. K.
Great place for live music any night of the week. The drinks are a good price and the food options are Jamaican food or burritos and tacos I think.
e. s.
Fantastic burgers to eat and amazing music
D. S.
An excellent establishment with a brilliant atmosphere and selection of drinks which are only bolstered by its covid precautions and consciousness towards public safety. Also dog friendly!
I. A.
I went on a Friday hoping they would have sone football match on. And they did! Bar staff was really friendly, even when my card was having issues. They have pool tables, a lot of space to sit outside, and that night they had a live band. The band was quite nice, playing "Latin rhythms".
There were also two or three food stands on the outside. I fell in love with the Jamaican stand. Apparently Jamaicans do something that looks like a Latin American empanada which is called "patty".
Do yourself a favour and have a patty.
M. D.
One of the craziest places I've been! Hostel upstairs (which I've not stayed in to comment on) bar downstairs and from 9pm music venue and night club.
No doubt if you stay here as a hostel you're here for a good time not a good nights sleep!
One thing to be mindful of is that a security person, who takes his job very very seriously won't let you put a bag or coat on the floor.
I believe there is a coat check.
f. m.
Best live music in London!!
S. P.
A bit overpriced as it used to be free. But amazing. Love music almost every day. Good beer garden. For the summers. I saw great bands there
N. R.
Review for bands - drum kit is decent, monitors are decent. Room is boomy when empty, sounds good when full. The stage is kind of one big bass trap...
O. V.
Lovely beer garden. Awesome staff, especially when it comes to contactless ordering
M. B. K.
Great music, excellent vibes all over. We enjoy staying in Brixton when in London and we happened to drop by for the Field Day festival in the nearby Brockwell Parc. Hootenanny had a decent line for a drink and likewise affordable playlists. Also it was great to have a live set of a band we were trying to enjoy another after a first performance in Bristol.

This is probably my favourite gig venue in London. The atmosphere is great for dancing with a crowded area below the stage. There's also a more relaxing pub area for those scared of the dance floor, and a few couches and pool table to keep people entertained. The outside is quirky with food vendors and a festival type of feeling, with fires burning in the wintertime.
L.
Always a good gig on Friday and Saturdays with a fun chilled atmosphere. Unfortunately sometimes spoilt by too many people being let in so you can't move, then people get pushy and then the odd fight breaks out.
M. G.
A consistently great place to go out for good live music and a dance in London. Great live bands at the weekends with relaxed and friendly vibe both on and off the dancefloor. If the question is, "Where should I go out for a good bop in London?" Then the emphatic answer is always Hootenany!
M. F.
A great place for reggae vibes
K.
Great place for live music. Also has some amazing food stalls outside until late. Nice chilled out and open vibe and great mix of people. Proper Brixton!!
S. B.
The Hootananny is a distinctive London experience- anywhere you go, if you're talking to anyone who's been out in London over the last five years- they've heard of the Hoot.
The beer is cheap, the staff are cheerful, and the music is unbeatable. Great food all year round outside in the beer garden.
If you want to dance your arse off to some original, top quality live music, you won't find anywhere better.
M. T.
I think this place is the best especially when they play swing & bass nights it’s the best!!!
My new e.p. is out now on Spotify check it out!!! 😜
C. D.
Good live reggae music on Thursday talent night. Come before 9 for free entry otherwise £3. Carribean menue
Pool table gets a bit crowed
D. P.
Very cool place, affordable prices, cashback option at the bar (big thumbs up), streetfood, unfortunately the bar service is slow, NO air inside! Overall a very good place to go out and good vibes.
P. D.
One of my fav venues in London! Fridays are great. Free live music and street food outside. Super chill atmosphere. Love it.
n. c.
Huge pub with a great atmosphere. Would recommend going there on Saturday when beer garden is filled with young people and different eateries. The pub I like to go during mach day with my friends.
L. B.
Excellent venue, hosted Soul Grenades for a great night of music! They frequently have top live acts playing, they are one of the top venues in Brixton!
S. D.
Great place to chill in the sun in the beer garden, or play snooker inside. There is always live music at night, free entry before 10 but one night a week there is comedy.
N. G.
One of my first night out in London since I live here.
It was a great experience : it's free, the beer isn't expensive, there are great groups playing on stage and you have the choice to listen to live music, watch a football match on the big screen or play pool in the other room, or go outside and chill and grab something to eat at one of the 3 or 4 sellers preparing delicious deashes in the courtyard.
H. B.
Adderly is the best bartender around!! I would go to this pub solely to see him again 💗💗 best personality around
H. B.
The hootenanny is a great place to go to see live music, play pool and have a drink - they also have a guy selling burritos in the garden. Can get very crowded which isn't great if you're playing pool
c. 4.
Nice please. Just security is kind of rude but is ok, not all the people are drunk heads.
H. B.
The music is always great, and it's always pretty busy. Only thing is, there's something really wrong with the pints, and you'll invariably end up with a horrible hangover even if you don't drink too much! Stick to bottled beer or spirits or you'll loose the next day...
O. M.
Suits students, drinks good value for Brixton. Pool tables, lots of seating and on the first Wednesday of every month there is karaoke with a live band but put your name down earlier in the evening to get a slot.
R. W.
Wicked cool venue, great music but the bouncers need to put their badges back in the cereal box. Every time they're so aggressive for no reason.. ruins it really I just wanna boogie
V. s.
A great place and good atmosphere with a nice variety of people and food
B. D.
V. Nice and helpful waiter with the nightmare app to order and pay.. But it is good to b strict and follow rules to keep everyone safe...
P. P.
Great venue... Good music... Afro beat, funk and jazz, reggae, folk. Best place in Brixton for a late beer.
E. T.
Couldn’t have asked for a better place to finish our night at. The locals who frequent here are welcoming to foreigners and strike up great conversation. Love the difference between the multiple rooms
P. K. T.
Finding the best places wherever we go is a must do when you are a tour guide. Being in the UK, US or Brasil I end up being a guide anyways. I am glad we had a great time at Hootanany. Lively crowd. Come with us to Brasil and get to now our most authentics nights also with great vibes! #rioencantos #exchange #uk
S.
Huge victorian pub and venue. The stage technical department could be improved and the sound desk behind a perspex wall with a few hole cut in it is a joke. This place could be amazing but it's still very good and worth a visit. Lovely staff in my experience.
A. K.
A night out if last resort, not because it's bad but because you always know you'll have fun and live music even if it's not really your thing. Usually busy and buzzing all night.
R. D.
A bit pricey both for entry and drinks but its always a good night. The atmosphere is always lively and the late licence is definitely a big plus.
J.
Red stripe is on tap. Jah bless. 3 pool tables inside, £1.20 a go. Live music and lots of events. Street food cooked in their smoking area. Entry is often free before 9pm, £5 after.
M. I.
Decent to very good live music. Spacious, crowded but rarely packed. Jerk chicken is great, and it comes for £5 only.
M. A.
One of my favourite spots. Not intimidating at all. Allways a good vibe with an eclectic mix of friendly people. Oohh and there's pool tables.
A. C.
I think this place is the only place worth coming to go south London its so easy to feel like your a regular , the whole experience was worth moving to London for. I te been three times but if I had my way I would have been ever weekend . Even been single I feel safe welcome and. Have never felt so at ease. In any other place. With or without company .
A. K.
Cool venue with interesting and vibrant music! Must go place in Brixton. They have great outdoor area and nice street food stalls. (Pizza and Jamaican)
D. D.
Became a bit too popular for their own good, they now charge entry most evenings and you have to show I'd to get in. Still long queues on the weekend. If you can look past all of that, it can still be a decent night out.
C. G.
So many great gigs to be seen at The Hootanannay. Reggae, ska, hop-hop all feature on the eclectic line-up week after week. There's also a little food market in the carpark which is perfect for when you need a break from dancing.
T. H.
Great live music venue always full of friendly people with loving vibes, room to dance and amazing food in their spacious beer garden/smoking area.
R. S.
Great Nachos, decent priced drinks but more so really good vibes with great reggae sound systems. Great for a Post Lido pint at brockwell Park
L. M.
It is a venue with a hostel above it, stayed in the hostel for a week or so due to work and it was ample for me. I'm easily pleased. The rooms are basic but fine and there is a shower room and bathrooms on different levels. There are three codes you need to get you into the buidlng so I would say its pretty secure. The area is awesome with a Sainsburys over the road and a 5 minute walk to Brixton market and station, which is excellent as its on the Victoria line which is very handy. I would stay there again due to the price and location mainly! The venue downstairs is loud so if you're a light sleeper it could be tough to stay here.
A. F.
excellent bar staff, awesome venue.. security staff need some advice on people relations, how-to talk to people with out being so rude and arrogant, and that they do not have permission to touch or assault customers.
S. H.
Great place to meet up with friends, lively atmosphere, live music, pool tables,.......it is great!!! Will definitely tell my friends and go there again😀
C. D.
Spacious and the drinks are reasonably priced but in terms of sound when it comes to live music is not so great... so its either the equipment or the engineer.
N. A.
It's a Hostel in UK...what do you expect? Great price and perfect for sleeping after going to a concent at the O2 Academy (the matress was actually really comfortable). But I think I wouldn't want to spend more time there. Staff is a bit slow but friendly.
S. D.
Fun evening if ska. It wouldn't hurt the staff to wash the floor though. My feet were sticking as I walked and trying to dance.
a. g.
Really good venue, Beer Garden and Jerk Chicken, this is one of the classics in Brixton, the only thing is the drinks are not cheap but there are many free event and gigs. And almost one event per day free before 9pm or really cheap
M. O.
Vibes on Vibes best Live Reggae music
T. B.
Great mix of people, live music, good vibes and large outdoor area with food. Definitely one of the best place in London for a night out!
L. G.
Live music, yes!
J. W.
It's not too bad this place gets jam packed at the weekend and the live music isnt that great depending who is playing but not too bad an atmosphere
C. G.
Loved it. Bar staff just fab. Music for over 21. Got a good feeling. Food was fantastic
A. L.
One of Brixton's must go to places. Bit of a walk from the high street he tie it in with Effra Social and you've got half your night out. Fantastic range of live music.
W. P.
Such a good, fun venue. Especially in the summer. It feels like a very friendly, inclusive crowd. Dont come here if you want something smart, come here if you want to have fun in an unpretentious venue..
M. B.
Spent a quiet Thursday evening here for Dinner & Drinks with colleagues. Lovely garden area on a nice evening.
Very tasty burritos and nachos, highly recommended.
L. D.
Great live band, nice layout, pool table if you want. Soft lighting makes it feel more intimate.
N. D.
Great live music, security are really on top of it but you do still get shoved around a bit by mashed hipsters on the dancefloor. Good night out.
E. D. B.
Friday night at Hootenanny's is a true London tradition. Ska bands play to a raucous crowd, and everyone has a whale of a time.
Note of caution though - keep an eye on your valuables. There are a lot of phone thieves on the lookout for an open bag, and they're normally that nice looking couple next to you.
P. B.
When u need a good night out Hootenanny is the place to be. Especially on Thursday's. Top reggae artist nice atmosphere.
T. B.
The place to be for an all inclusive night of live and sound system music in a cohesive environment. Big up the pleasant security staff also!
A. N.
Amazing live music, food vendors, pool tables and the price of a pint is decent
C. T.
Good local find, quiet and chilled during the week. Quite big on a Saturday night with Jamaican bbq. Locals during the week can make the place less inviting
s. c.
Hootananny used to be one of the best place to go but feels like it have started to attract some trouble makers these days .obviously it's not the fault of the venue but I can't give 5 stars .
C. P.
Loud, divy, live music, limited beer options on tap, always hot food tents out, smells of raggae on Sunday afternoons, opened late, ridiculous drama in the bathroom, chilled peeps outside ... It's just an institution, and that's kind of what we like.
G. R.
Good but hard to sit down when good music is playing
E. G.
Absolutely fantastic for live gigs....especially love Thursday night (reggae night). A MUST visit.
M. B.
Interesting mix of locals and travellers, enjoyable gigs and events and cool Brixtron atmosphere (which bouncers often spoil, but that's unfortunately the case in many London venues).
J.
Good music, good vibe. It has changed a little bit with time but the environment still very decent
A. G.
Good place if you like live music! Everyday is a different kind of music so it's really interesting to go.
N. T.
Superb casual party, very friendly atmosphere. They have food station working till closing, as well.
T. E. E.
Great relaxed and welcoming vibe here. You can play pool and be there are live band nights for a fun party!
M. M.
Amazing venue. Brilliant music, was too full too have any food but next time!
G. F.
My favourite pub of Brixton!
P.
Great vibe and value for money
M. N. G.
Hootananny’s is such a special bar. It’s really the heart of a community in Brixton—and they have a great happy hour from 5-7.
J. R.
Good live concerts, plenty of pool tables, nice beer garden with street food. Recommend!
D. A.
The Hootanany in Brixton is the best night out south of the river. An enormous pub at the end of Effra Rd it plays host to live ska, reggae, latin, gypsy, carnival and afrobeat bands and much more it. It has a large beer garden out-front with mexican, pizza and jerk chicken food stalls, The pub it;s self has two adjoining rooms, one with the stage and the other with pool tables and seats. The best nights to visit are Fridays and Saturdays, an eclectic mix of people with one shared goal....to party
J. F. R.
Thrown a Portuguese, a Jamaican, a British and a few more in a blender, mix it up for a few seconds, add a few sprinkles of weed and you get the hootananny. Great chilled atmosphere.
M. B.
Friendly customers and the staff customers service is outstanding. It was my first vist at hootanny Brixton the staff was very friendly and helpful beautiful surroundings I would recommend hootanny to anyone looking for a good night out
G. B.
Such a great venue and such a nice vibe. Security staff are a bit humourless but everyone else is having fun ☺️
J. D.
Great music venue, could do with getting a few more beers on the go (mostly generic lagers) and maybe cleaning the toilets a bit more often...
B. A.
Live music was great, the service by the bar was not bad but there were only 2 people behind the bar whilst there was 5 people to charge entrance when getting in,they should organised people better
E. S.
Nice, chill atmosphere with good live music, excellent dance floor, good food until late and billiards tables, what more can you ask for?
B. S.
Great venue during lock down as they have a large outdoor area
E. J. S.
Fun times! Lots of indoor and outdoor space. Great for live music.
C. M.
Was there on Fri/Sat nights and a while on Sunday afternoon after staying at the linked hostel. Great atmosphere and fantastic food!
A. P.

H. E.
Really good night out. I love the crowd it brings, people of all ages and backgrounds.
t. k.
Live music, pool tables jerk chicken and other food getting cooked in the outside yard mainly on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights...this place has plenty to offer and lots of soul...aand about 5 mintue walk from the tube station
H. S.
Great place to party outside central London, I didn't expect it to be so good considering it is close to Brixton. Very impressed about the environment and the vibe. Cheers!

A. C.
I can't remember much, but it was a fun night 🤣
J. P.
Famous and iconic place. I still dont get why you have to pay to get in on a Thursday when the place is empty... Still, a cool pub. Better on weekends.
L. T.
Luv reggea thursdays
G. G.
Unique place in Brixton. Quality live music and food. Beer selection can be way better, though.

Awesome place, live music, food and lots of people in the weekend, more relaxed during working days

Eclectic music, so make sure you check before you go as it ranges massively. Good old fashioned brixton establishment. Good daytime venue too.
S. F.
Tacos are really surprisingly good, spicey and good ingredients. The crowd is nice, and the smoking area is friendly and chilled out.
E. L.
Stayed in the hostel. Great if youre heading to O2 Brixton, its about a 20 minute walk. Needed some fans for the rooms though.

I. J.
Very very nice atmosphere and layout
D. M.
Nice place, nice vibe

Good atmosphere but too hot when busy, they need a mechanical engineer to specify a ventilation supply and extract system.

T. S. L.
Hootananny in Brixton is the go-to night out for those that fancy partying in South London. Not only does it make for a TSL top nightlife recommendation thanks to the eclectic mix of live music (including Latin, Reggae, Dubstep, Gypsy, Swing, Afrobeat, Funk, Ska & Hiphop) in a gigantic pub setting but with the food stalls adding a fun festival feel and entry at only £3 on Fridays and Saturdays you simply can’t go wrong...
To find more unique and independent places why not visit the Twenty Something London website!
