Reviews of St John's Smith Square

The place is so nice and cosy. Came here to watch Libera concert and the venue gives such the right vibes.

Very close to the houses of parliament this beautiful old church which dates from 1714 has a fascinating history. It has been a concert hall for more than 30 years with a great variety of orchestras and soloists, catering for every taste. The decor looks slightly tired, but this kind of adds to the charm and ambience of the place. Do visit this venue, take in a concert and then the excellent food in the crypt.

You have to decide if you are reading this review because of the restaurant (Footstool Restaurant) or because of the concerts in the church. This list is really for the concert aspects as the restaurant has it's own Google Maps/Google listing. To go there search for Footstool Restaurant. However, the restaurant page is also accessible through the St. John's Smith Square website.
As far as a concert space goes, it's about on par in my opinion with the many other churches that now host music events and concerts. St. John's had literally been destroyed in WWII and rebuilt in 1969, so there are some things that they did that improve the usability of the space but it remains pretty close to the structure for which it was intended - worship. Handicap access though is considerably better than a lot of other similar churches, a huge plus. However, access to the church by car or public transport is not as easy as other similar venues.
So the main differentiation for St. John's is the quality and frequency of the artists it presents for its concerts. In this respect they do a decent job but it's not the best in class in my opinion. However, that determination is really down to the individual concert goer and his/her taste in music and artists.
Coupled with a very spectacular restaurant facility in the Crypt (the Footstool Restaurant) it's a very good place to visit or attend a concert. Highly recommended.

Had an acting gig inside this concert hall, it is not very big but it looks decent and inimate.

A beautiful concert venue 5-min walk from the Westminster Abbey. Friendly staff, great diversity of concerts, perfect if you'd like Classical music in a little more chamber atmosphere than the huge Royal Albert Hall or Royal Festival Hall.

Prestigious concert venue in Millbank organising both lunchtime and evening concerts with world class musicians. Also with a nice restaurant and bar on the underground level.

In a modern London, churches are challenged to become more than a sum of their parts due to massive restoration costs and escalating need. In Dicken's day and earlier, churches would be drop in centres for the poor and needy as well as places for prayer.
Now, your modern vicar will more than likely be female, as well as an events organiser.
This church, situated in the same square that The Conservative Party used to live in, is a neat central focal point for an attractive square. It means that anyone interested in it can photograph if from all angles.
People can meet there, buy merchandise, see art, listen to classical music. It's modern eclecticism is on a par with St. Martins in the Fields, the epitome of church come event and commercial merger.

The church turned concert hall is an interesting addition to downtown London with performance from different cultures and genre of music and arts. I was lucky to cat h the London bulgarian choir performing here was a treat to have experienced it.

The secret is out - but only for classical music lovers. This hidden away converted baroque style church is a concert hall in Westminster.
Lunch time and evening performances throughout the whole year. Perfect acoustics. The restaurant in the crypt is cosy & inviting with lots of chatter going on at busy times. Healthy selection of dishes, fresh & delicious.
Sensible covid restrictions in place.
There is an elevator if you are unable to manage stairs. The seats in the concert hall are not so comfy, bring a cushion if you can.
Make it part of your agenda, if you're a visitor to London.
