Reviews of The Dalston Jazz Bar

There's a lot going for this joint. It's your typical hazy little jazz bar 🍸 with a great crowd. They had an awesome live jazz band playing 🎷 last time we were there. The staff are really down to Earth and casual 👌🏽 and the general vibe is on point.
They have a unique pricing philosophy which encourages you to pay the amount you deem fit for the whole thing. Which I think more places should experiment with. The food menu always seems to have exotic meats on offer. I've tried their ostrich and alligator 🐊 in the past and this time round I also spotted kangaroo on the menu. Definitely one for adventurous eaters. They do also have "normal" food if that's what you prefer 😂.
Basically this place is awesome and so worth seeing 🙌🏽

One of my favourite spots in London! This is definitely one of London’s best kept secrets. The live jazz is always fantastic and the atmosphere is amazing. The staff is really lovely and friendly, and the prices are very affordable. The food served is also delicious - and the menu has no set prices so allows customers to pay what they can/what they think it’s worth.

This place is a real hidden gem. Chef and staff are fabulous and live music always spectacular. Not one for fussy eaters - though they do have a vegetarian option. Choice of seafood meat or poultry for the carnivores and it's always a nice surprise what exactly comes to the table (everything from casseroles, shrimp, oysters, moule). The food is incredible without fail and the flavours are rich and and portion sizes very generous. Pay what you feel is a real novelty and the chef is right to have such confidence in his cooking. I was a little disappointed to see Dalston Jazz does not yet have the full five star rating here that it clearly deserves. Hopefully this helps. This is easily my favourite place to eat in London.

The food was surprisingly delicious and full of flavour, the best I had in long time. With a great atmosphere and jazz playing live. Great concept!
A bit crowded and staff not that organised but friendly overall.
G. k.
A real gem within Dalston. The best music, great cocktails, supreme dancing, and an eclectic crowd. Truly a locals paradise with room for more!
E. D.
Amazing experience! The food is delicious and huge portions, the atmosphere is so fun and the music is incredible!

Best Jazz Bar in London! Love goes out to Duke!<3
T. E.
Amazing venue, the staff where so kind and hospitable. I went on a Saturday night and the bar staff where great, duke and his father showed me great hospitality and they represent dalston in a brilliant way
S. C.
Stumbled across this place by chance and it did not disappoint. Food was delicious, the music was excellent and the whole vibe was on point
B. A.
Amazing experience, really cool vibe and great jazz,
Duke was an absolute legend, big up !
Cheers

The food was so delicious, we were sopping up every last drop on the platter! The musicians were top notch and the atmosphere is second only to Frenchmen street in New Orleans…hands down my FAVORITE night in London, already cant wait to return!
P. P.
Dalston jazz is a truly riveting venue, the ostrich and kangaroo is tasty, mushroom is great with bread
F. L.
Best quality food, music and service I’ve experienced in a long long time. Absolutely golden
A. B.
Very cute place with very good music and amazing food. The staff is also nice and there is a positive vibe all around. Bonus: you pay as much as you want for the food - based on how much you liked it, I really liked the idea :)
K. P.
This place provides unusual vegetables and exotic fishes at an affordable cost. The soups are tasty and mouth-watering. You can also try strange foods like shark and zebra here. It serves as the perfect destination for the people who go for adventures. The jazz band is also significant. The environment is pleasant and the staff are hospitable.
You can also try other exotic foods. You can cherish the combination of mojitos and beer with the brilliant music played.
The Bar is European and exotic. You also have a say in how much you get to pay. Many customers appreciate this idea. It also brings in more customers. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the place has a good ambiance. There is no traditional menu. It resides in Hackney and comes to life during the evenings. It hosts live music until 3 am.
L. G.
It's one of the few place in London in which you can feel free to dance, where beers an cocktails cost reasonably and where you can feel to be in Europe. Its funky and soul atmosphere is very charming
L. G.
It was literally the best night of my life - food was amazing and the atmosphere was even better (if this was even possible).
Duke was so nice to us and the italian girl who served us was even nicer! Such good table service. And it was he first shift! Amazing.
I feel like the food deserves a paragraph of its own - it was sublime. Proper home made food with a touch of exotic artistry
S. L.
Being here a few times for the music. Tonight I tried the food for the 1st time and it was AMAZING. Staff very friendly. Great atmosphere. Recommended for those who are looking for delicious, generous, homemade-feel dinner, with beautiful live jazz in the background. The owner is a gem.
A. B.
The exotic dish was great, felt like I was near Caribbean..the prawn dish was not so good. The prawns were too dry and it was too much sun dry tomatoes and it was too oily. Also, the music was too loud it wasn’t able to hear each other while talking to my friends. Overall, was nice and cosy place. It was nice that the chef was serving our food. Therefore, I think it is a good concept that there is no fixed price and if you feel like the food was great you can pay more, I think it would encouraged chef to push more. So if they will improve the things I mention, I think they have potential:) the service was great! All the best to all!
T. D.
Had an absolute lovely night, great fun and great vibes. NINA is an absoluely amazing team member and she is the reason my family and friends will visit again.
R. P.
Enjoyed this charming bar where with lovely music, great food, and friendly staff. Generous portions too and a unique pay as you like concept. I'd recommend making a reservation before you get there because the place is small and gets packed quite quickly. Also stick around to see how it turns into a dance venue at 2330 hrs! It's good fun!
A. M.
Got a meal from here on the TooGoodToGo (One meal could have fed 2 people!)
First the staff were great! We were met outside and welcomed in to a fantastic little jazz bar, really amazing atmosphere. The staff were really friendly and chatty while we waited 5 minutes for the cook to get things ready.
While inside we saw that eating in, is a donation menu, (you pay what you think its worth) and honestly, the food was so good I dont think I could afford it!
Great food, great staff, great atmosphere.
We will be coming back next time we're in London and having a night here!
W. A.
Excellent quaint place that never disappoints with the quality of the jazz bands hosted there. Good to come for a drink, however would not recommend the food. We’ve ordered the King Prawns and to say, they weren’t Kitchen Nightmares-worthy just yet but went down that lane. It’s nice to see the kitchen/bar while sitting down however the food did not match the expectations. The plate was big and brimful of food, however if one lonely person ordered this for themselves they would not me able to tackle the mess. The portion was too much and the salad underneath the prawns was full of many different vegetables that did not mix well together and had too much sos all over.
Might come back for a cozy drink, but will not be ordering the food again. Also the below reviews seem concerning so from the moral point of view will have to rethink my next visit
S. T.
Pros
Atmosphere
Friendly staff
Wine
Music
Cons
Chairs were mainly stools. Not comfortable at all. If you are going there to enjoy a nice dinner and music you will most likely be thinking about the seat and how uncomfortable you are. Not good for people with back problem. They should really invest in better seats anything in my opinion would be better than a he metal stools we were sitting on
Food although some of it was nice it was limited. When we went we couldn’t order from the menu as they had a special menu one plate for two people but no starch or carbs. Not filling in my opinion especially if more than half the food you are sharing with your partner you can’t eat. It also came with oily vegetables and on top of that the food was barley warm not hot, which in my opinion not a great experience but I most admit if they had more carbs or if it was hot and fresh it would have been amazing
Overall I love that this is a family niche owned business and the staff are very sweet and accommodating and their is an authenticity to the place but a bit of improvement would make it a great place and hopefully they consider some of these changes
n.
Went here last weekend and had a very good time. Very good date spot with chill vibes, very delicious food (try the buffalo meatballs!) and great music! I made a reservation and it went even smoother than I expected. The DJ chef is also a sight to behold as he begins to bang his wears to Reggaeton at midnight!
J. V.
Amazing cool place to listen to great live jazz while eating tasty dinners! And you can give what you want for the food!!
M. D.
First of all their website is very misleading- you are not going to a posh restaurant, it is a rough place, hipster-ish but with a good atmosphere, live jazz music and fantastic cuisine.
The idea is you opt for a three course meal - soup, main course(s) and a dessert- however the only choice about the meal your are going to have is between vegetarian, meaty or a fishy set. That is all, nothing more. Two chefs just prepare exotic, delicious meals, one after another, all different and of great quality each. You are about to come across three of them (bearing in mind that there is always the vege/meat/fish set available). Next table may be served with something totally different.
I did not expect that, it took me few moments to understand the idea, but everything what happened next totally bought me. The food was delicious, variety and quality of wines is good, all accompanied by a jazz band.
This is not a place for a first date, but definitely for a second. And it has got full of people very quickly so booking advised.
I am definitely going to come back and find out what would I be served next time.
Aside of that, I tried to calculate how this place can be profitable - with all their offer, size and pricing- barely. This is why there must be something more over there and this, I believe, is passion for food. 5 stars from me as I really enjoyed the adventure- even though I did not know what I was going to eat next.

This tiny little restaurant is probably my favourite place in London. I used to live in Dalston and come here all the time. I no longer live in the UK, but every time I go back, I make it here.
The live jazz bands are always incredible. Always wondered how they can have such great musicians playing at such small venue. But they do!!
If you like Jazz and a relax atmosphere this is your place. The food is also pretty good, so come, relax and enjoy
S. L.
This is such a charming place! The staff is really friendly and helpful, the food is delicious and not too expensive and the atmosphere is great. We had the best time in ages and really enjoyed the live jazz while eating. I wouldn't know how to describe this place best. A cocktail bar? A restaurant? A live music venue? Well, it’s all of the above and much more. Really worth a visit!
M. S.
Absolutely marvellous! The chef really knows how to cook exotic meats. If you wish a new wonderful experience, you should definitely go there. They're are lovely people too. You would enjoy the live music. 💞💞💞
R. B.
Just went for drinks and dancing the other Friday and it was super weird. First was this nice jazz band, cool. They the DJ started playing and it was super eclectic. Jazz, salsa, regaetton, commercial. He couldn't stop talking, sometimes funny, sometimes annoying. It is definitely worth it to give it a try hahahah. The crowd was also quite mix.
m. t.
Nice and genuine atmhosphere. Good jazz. Unique and unusual food prepared with care
R. M.
Our stag do ended up here on a Saturday night and had the best time! Great music and dancing. I left my bag and jacket at the bar, and lo and behold it was still there the next day, the owner was extremely helpful despite the bar being closed. Thanks!
N. B.
I’m conflicted over this review since I personally had a great experience, but some of the other reviews and responses from management are concerning.
Maybe think twice if you’re looking to book a big dinner reservation here or are put off by crowds at peak hours, but my GF and I had a nice dinner and enjoyed the jazz.
J. C.
Really good jazz. Tasty interesting food. wine selection isn't great but would go back. Didn't take a really long time to get served like other reviewers mentioned and thought the chef and waiters seemed very nice.
V.
Hipster paradise, a heady combination of live free form jazz and a delectable menu of such great value. No prices on display, pay the price you feel. The range of dishes provided from starter to dessert was broad and most certainly top restaurant quality.
Well worth a visit.....
E.
First of all The DJ is the BEST, he dances and entertains too!
really nice staff, great music.. mojitos are decent and you can pay what you want for food! really really cool place. I recommend you go and have a wicked time!
A. H.
Such an awesome vibe. Will be great on a summer night sitting outside. Live jazz on Fri and Sat nights and the staff are lovely!
B. A.
Nice and quirky place for dinner and a few drinks. No set menu but 3 surprise courses. Food was well cooked and when I complained there wasn't enough meat on my main they brought extra out. You also pay what you think is fair for the meal. All in all, a good service and would definitely recommend
C. K.
This place is lovely!! Cocktails ON POINT!!! Food GREAT!!! Ten out of Ten
C. R.
Fantastic club/resto, we went there yesterday for the 1st time with my GF (Friday eve), extensive wine list & delicious food (and excellent value) and, vibey atmosphere and really good band playing a mix of calypso, swing and reggae at a very high standard. Also, make sure to have a chat with the owner/chef Robert, he s the soul of the club... Good night out, Highly recommended!
A. L.
What an amazing experience! An unpretentious, cozi place with great music and service. My first time eating frog legs and I really enjoyed. The highlights was the live music and the attentive and friendly waiters. I recommend it as a unique experience in London!
v.
The vibe is excellent, but the bar is seriously understaffed - you could wait for half an hr for a cocktail, which is inconsistent both in price and quality and most importantly, the DJ is really bad. Every single time he has the exact same playlist. He also loves changing songs 20 seconds in and talking over all the time. It is very hard to get the rhythm going and becomes exhausting to hear him after a while
I. R.
Fun place for Saturday night. The owner is also the DJ and once the jazz concert finishes, he plays reggaeton music. I had a birthday celebration here and I'd go back to for a night out with friends.
R. B.
Good food and a wide range of drinks , the the live jazz on Saturday was the best I have heard in ages! Rounded the night off with Chef DJ. Amazing .. I will be back..
R. B.
The Dalston Jazz Bar begins service in the early evening with a delicious food and cocktail menu accompanied by live jazz from around 7.30 to 10.30 - the food is beautifully presented and great portions to boot.
After the live jazz and food service ends, The Dalston Jazz Bar transforms into a club and the tables are removed to create a dance floor - with soul, funk, salsa, and more till 3am - the dancing and the vibes that I have seen at the height of the night are impressive to say the least!
There is a dedicated smoking 'Garden' that has grown up on the side of the premises in recent months and is a great place to enjoy a meal, a cigarette, or just a break from dancing while supping on a range of cocktails.
The Dalston Jazz Bar is full of character and well worth a visit and many of the reviews below are outdated, especially the bad ones, so if you visit the Dalston Jazz Bar and you have a great time, TELL EVERYBODY about it :)
J. C.
Fun concept and great live music! I didn't eat here but everyone looked amazing. Live jazz music on Thu Fri and Sat.
D. G.
Great food, great people, great owner. Best place to be in Dalston on a weekend. You don’t want to miss the eclectic DJ sets
S. D.
I take other reviewer's points that the Jazz Bar is not, as the same suggests, a chic place where waiters bring you wine and somebody scooby-doos on the sax, but a slightly scuzzy Saturday night dancing den where £5 mojitos come in pints and the music is a fab mix of old soul and disco classics. This is one for the young and those who don't mind leaving their coats in the corner; if that's you, you might really enjoy this place.
S. M.
Tried this place after it was suggested on Yplan, very unqiue ambience combining a simple garage setting with a lively jazz band in the background. We both had the zebra burgers which were simply amazing! These kind of places are what make Dalston interesting and unique!
A. H.
Great food, the prawns are excellent. Jazz is great n all.
L. M.
Very small venue without fee to enter, nice if you want to grab a quick beer around midnight in Dalston and chill in the seatings outside. I wouldn't recommend it for a full evening though, there are better choices around.
L. G.
It is insane, best music, incredible food and people it is almost like it is unreal. Hope this places keeps its authenticity and does not get too crowded despite the dozens of positive reviews it deserves.
M. &. F. B.
This is an atypical and really nice place.
The concept: uncommon food (zebra, crocodile, kangaroo, frog legs...), unfixed prices and then at 11:00pm all the tables are removed and the restaurant turns in a club with amazing old musics!
Only drawbacks: service a bit long so be patient!
S. F.
One of the best nights out in Dalston! Had a fantastic meal, great jazz and afterwards had a great time dancing until the early morning hours!
L. R. H.
Fun concept with 'pay what you think is fair ' ( min. 15 per person). The atmosphere is good and friendly yet chaotic staff. Unfortunately is the fun not of a high standard.. worth a try though
A. B.
Fantastic place, great music, food looked amazing, receptive service... I had never been so early in the night and it was the best plan ever.
S. K.
Amazing food, drinks (we had Mojito) and energy! In this place please don't review the scenery it's not important, the people focus on how you experience the energy from the bar!
M. M.
Cool venue off the main road, plenty of seating and they play really nice live jazz. Not the biggest selection of beers on offer but enough to satisfy.
P. K.
Loved this place! Small but the staff were friendly, music was great and the music was brill. We had a great time and will definitely come back 😊
h. d.
Second visit for me and this place always exceeds expectations, food amazing, music brilliant and hospitality awesome!! Great night!!
K. G. D.
A great cafe modelled on the French cafes of old. Excellent cuisine from Thursday to Saturday and live jazz combos from the top UK musicians
n. d.
Great MUSIC!!! The best fun I have had since I have been in london. It reminds me of my hometown (detroit). Great vibe, layed back,, not to expensive with a tiny bathroom and long queue.
D. B.
Always a guaranteed fun night. Haven't eaten here but fantastic jazz shows and DJing on weekends.
D. T.
One of the best nights out in Dalston. What an amazing night, it's the perfect little bar for a party. Thank you DJ Chef for the food and the music!
A. M.

V.
Great music and nice people, price-quality ratio for both food and alcohol is poor though.
M. R.
The Dalston Jazz Bar is an absolute classic! Good food, nice drinks and amazing music! My favorite!
J. M.
Food is amazing even if it is quirky. Good live jazz. Not enough choice of beers though
F.
lovely place, especially the music! although david was the only one working the bar at some point as the rest was just hopeless and confused.
D.
The Jazz bar is an amazing place to visit from the atmosphere and live jazz to the amazing food. Definitely going back.
j. c.
DJ is also the chief in the kitchen. It all kicks off around midnight although he talks quite a bit sometimes the music is always random and crosses over many varying genres
M. T.
Great food and music! Staff were really friendly and attentive.
A. B.
Intimate atmosphere, great live music thur- sat, you're literally just a meter away from the band, turns into a club after 11.

Great atmosphere, live music or dj, and great cocktails (cheap as well, compared to other places in London)
R. F.
Charming late night bar, if not a little busy. Worth a visit for the tunes and the experience.
M. Z. R.
Kind of crowded and more expensive than the experience is worth but quite a relaxing atmosphere when it's quieter
F. H.
Great experience! The food is delicious and the service top notch! Absolutely loved it!
G.
Rare find for this area. Grass roots, unpretentious kitchen turns into bar / club. Even doorman chilled / forgiving.
c.
I had a lovely time. Great tunes excellent dancing. People should stop trying to neg it.

Small drink selection and the acoustics is not so good. But a good jazz joint all in all.

(Translated) Live music and a very close and friendly treatment. They serve food but have no menu. They ask you to pay what you think the service deserves. £ 25 per person is what people normally donate. He came apart.

Música en vivo y un trato muy cercano y amable. Sirven comida pero no tienen carta. Te piden que pagues lo que creas que merece el servicio. 25 libras por persona es lo que normalmente dona la gente. El vino aparte.

(Translated) Very good discovery. We stumbled upon this restaurant completely by chance in a small alley in Dalston.
Very good jazz trio and a feast, unique menu that evening, 3 course entree (trio of meat (hare, crocodile !!! and piglet) and various sides of roasted vegetable salads ...) and dessert.
Very generous, very tasty, in short, a delight and an address to support and keep preciously.
The service was also very pleasant and humorous!
