Funky pub with live music and a great bar. Went in here not expecting much but ended up having a cracking night dancing away until the end. some drunkenness some silliness and a fab brass jazz modern band??? Wonderful way to end the night thank you Price wise it was £7 on the door for standing (not sure for seated as there were none left). If you do sit make sure it is near the stage or it wont be much use. Drinks a round of 4 double gin/bullet and 4 shots came to 30ish quid so really reasonable as well

Great live jazz, blues and related genres several nights with free admission weekdays and early evening events Saturdays (when held), £7 Friday and Saturday nights. The regular blues jam on the first Monday of the month is a highlight. Happy hour offering discount cocktails or free pizza with two drinks.

I lived in Manchester for four years and Matt and Phred's was always my go-to for a night out. The music is always entertaining, the atmosphere is chilled and jovial, and the staff are all lovely. They also make a cracking pizza and not a bad cocktail either. I recommend trying their Penicillish.

Crazy it’s normally free entry here. Music is stellar no matter what, and the jams are so exciting to watch, with audience members come on stage to play with the band. Matt & Phreds is a place for grown ups rather than being a part of the usual Saturday night Manchester zoo-like atmosphere. People are lovely and the live music! It's amazing. Unfortunately the shows get booked up well in advance and well, grown-up don't like to stand around or leave things to chance in the hope of a cancellation. Solution: lockdowns are a thing of the past now 🤞 so me some budding Mancunian investor should note the need for more venues like this and help open another branch?

Love this place. Been around for year and years and for good reason. This club costs £5 to get in but it's worth it, they hand pick some of the best jazz bands arround to preform. This a cosy warm place. So book a table early as they go fast!!

Pints aren't too expensive, they have great acts on, and the place is just the right size to feel intimate and buzzing without getting cramped. It's standing room only during gigs unless you book a table and people get a bit if a boogie on so the vibes are immaculate. Definitely worth the £7 entry to watch a live band play because you're so close to the action.

I love this place. I've always had a good night here. You can get table service of you reserve a table far enough ahead. They have live bands most nights they are open, certainly on weekends. Weekdays are free entry! Call ahead if you want a table because they fill up quick! They also offer a pizza deal and happy hour however that's only well before the show. Overall a fun venue with great artists and good acoustics.

Decent night spot, loved the live music but found that it became lost in the noise of the crowd in the back half of the room (not sure that there's a lot that could be done about that though). We arrived at 8pm on a Thursday, missing 2-4-1 cocktails by seconds. As a result our drinks cost a small fortune (entirely down to our own poor timekeeping). All of the tables at the front were reserved, or taken, well in advance of the band playing at 9pm. It would be worth booking ahead if you want to get a good view/sound. Club has a generally quite cool vibe, though there was a reasonable amount of pretentiousness on display, amongst some of the clientele, if you let that sort of thing bother you.

A great live venue with quite a variety of acts on. My experience is better acts are on during the week, and gets very busy at the weekend. Definitely check out who's on before dropping in as in my experience the quality varies. Always enjoyed the acts, just not all to my tastes. A handful of beers on tap to choose from, but a decent selection of beverages overall. Pizza is excellent value - my favourite bar snack. The staff are usually quite friendly too.

The staff is incredibly friendly here! Came here on a weekday with my girlfriend mostly to take advantage of the happy hour deal on drinks and managed to catch a show! Because it was a weekday it wasn't very busy so reserving a table wasn't necessary but I imagine it gets a lot more packed during weekends. The cocktails we got were great!

I went there to see a band I'd never heard called The Dirty Bomb they played some great music and I even had the chance to get up with them for a quick jam after a long time not playing the drums "long story". The staff were great and the nachos were really good. All in all a brilliant night out and recommend going. PS if you're a musician every 1st Monday of the month is an open jam.

Nice place. Good atmosphere. Mixed audience. Good band ( Dreamer). Enjoyed their set list. Like many venues it appears the sound engineer has partial deafness as the first set was way too loud for the size of the venue. The mix sounded a lot more pleasant downstairs in the toilets. As a musician I do worry about " hearing damage". Volume level was better during the second set when the place filled up more. This band are quality musicians. Some good on pitch vocals from the ladies. Will return and do my best to support this venue, as they are in the minority by presenting decent bands.

Don't go if you haven't reserved a table at the front. The sound system isn't good at the back of the room, and they let people stand in front of the bar, which means you cannot see the musicians either. Otherwise, it's a good space, nice staff, good sized pours, decent food and dependable jazz.

Brilliant! Tried to book late for sat night for partners 40th. They fit us in and we had a fantastic time. Most amazing live band too. Loads of fun. Waited on all night and the staff arranged the band to sing happy birthday to my partner who was on the toilet at the time and only heard back end of it 😂. Such a fantastic night. Suffered for a few days after which goes towards the 5 ***** but that band!!!???? Wow! Awesome! Can't recommend this enough. Fantastic brilliant bar! If you want your evening to include live music come here! A cosy bar in the heart of the northern quarter with great live music. Loads of space to hang with friends, and even if you can't make up to the front of the stage tv screens help you see the band even from the back of the room. Incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Pretty much the go-to place for a good jazz night in Manchester! Drinks aren't too expensive, atmosphere is awesome and there's always something going on. Great authentic jazz and this for free (at least two concerts I could enjoy). What I will never understand is the (British) drink and food ordering process. You need a lot of patience until the friendly staff at the bar turns attention to you. You may feel like Woody Allen for some 25 minutes until then. My pizza was delivered to another guest by accident and I am waiting for a second try while writing these lines. Nevertheless it is a great place for excellent live music (which have become very rare) and I personally would like to thank all people who are working to make this possible. Oh - pizza arrived :-)!

The jazz is great but there is no noise control of the crowd which is really disappointing for a dedicated music venue /jazz club. Even a curtain would help! They offer cheap food but there is no provision for dietary requirements and they often run out of entire genres of drinks (completely running out of cider and stouts). Best to sit near the front if you want to hear the music

Amazing venue which has been open for decades. Shows bow good it is for it to still be going strong after all this time, in the fast and fickle Manchester club scene. Prices are reasonable and happy hour 2-4-1 cocktails is a great time to settle into your seat prior to the live acts starting. Sometimes you get table service, depending on how busy the bar staff are which is helpful because queuing at the bar can be a looonnnggg wait on a busy night. Option to start a bar tab here which saves a bit of waiting time. Best thing about this venue is the live enyertainment. Everything from Jazz to Soul to Blues to Burlesque Nights! TIP: Make sure to book at least 2 weeks before a bank holiday event. TIP: When reserving a table, try not to get one near to the stairs as people who have not paid for a table often try to use your table to rest their drinks on and stand well within your personal seating space as they struggle to get close to the entertainment.

My wife brought me here for my 40th last night. I really appreciate jazz and football, and it is a testiment to my wife's love for me she tolerates both. Tuesday was happy hour until midnight, so when we purchased 2 alcoholic drinks we received a free pizza. Contrary to a previous reviewer's comment the kitchen looked clean, and I would suggest if I and he were on a desert island and literally starving I would encourage him to waste away as I devour again the wonderful cajun chicken and margherrita feast we enjoyed last night. As my wife had set herself the challenge of working through the cocktail list (cocktails are not included in the pizza promotion), the chap behind the bar with the exceptional hair who was lovely pointed out we could keep two beers for me in the tap to save both my beers' freshness and my wallet too. The live music was great; a really welcome departure from the manufactured garbage that is so accessible in the modern World, and there was a wonderful relationship between the performance and the audience which made for a really great atmosphere. I will be back.

I really, really want to like this place but every time I go here it's just not right. The layout of the room is all wrong. The tables are all too near the stage , so you can't actually dance if that's what you want to do. Yet if you have a table at the back just to chill and chat to friends it's too loud just to have a conversation. Don't know who this venue is actually catering for ? But it's always packed so it's probably just me !

They have this husband and wife duo on the last Wednesday of each month and they are both first class musicians, those 2 are worth the trip alone. The atmosphere in the place is spot on, it feels like a proper old school jazz club or a new orleans bar. They make a great old fashioned too

I love Matt & Phreds jam sessions. I avoid coming on Friday or Saturday nights as it gets too crowded which makes the place way too loud. (They probably put the volume higher to cover crowd noise but then people just speak louder and it's just too much for my ears.) They have a good promotion on happy hours (usually 6 pm to 8 pm, earlier on Friday/Saturday and 6om to midnight on Tuesdays! Just check their website for more details), which is you get a free pizza when buying 2 drinks. Live music usually starts at 9 pm.

Great Gig, Brian McFadden was fantastic. Disappointed the venue decided to make the gig a standing only event as this made things very difficult for the disabled guests who had to sit on a fixed bench sideways on from the stage with other people stood in front of us. TBH personally having travelled so far to have the gig ruined in this way was hugely disappointing. Unfortunately for me my Disability was having a serious flare up o the day of the gig (not something that can be planned for in advance!) Had it not been Brian McFadden on stage we would definitely have left early. If you're disabled this venue doesn't cater for you, no disabled toilets etc....
