Reviews of The 1865
J. E.
Excellent venue from a performing and audience point of view. Friendly helpful management and staff. Awesome p.a. and engineering by Rich. Quality lighting by I think his name was John. Great green room. Door staff were polite and helpful. Good bar and prices. Team pulled together well and a good show came to life.
S. P.
Went to see (British) Sea Power with my brother. Great sound, enough space, well priced tasty beers from the Steamtown local brewery - what could be better?! An easy five stars from this visit
A. C.
In my opinion, the best venue in Southampton. Great sound, air conditioning and a good bar that sells real ale, drinks are reasonably priced for a venue.
K. B.
Went to see Bear's Den at The 1865 last night and I have to say I was blown away with the staff we came into contact with. Door staff were welcoming and friendly, as were the 2 members of bar staff we encountered. Venue itself was a fantastic space - it was very civilised, as we had tables and chairs set up (my first time for that ever!!) but I can definitely see how the space would be during a standing gig too. Will definitely return to see any bands I love if they choose this venue to play. Huge thanks to Vinilo Records too, for using this location for the Outstore.
T. l.
Had the best night here. Amazing venue, big enough to party, small enough to feel intimate with the act.
But the aspect of the evening I appreciated the most, was the wonderfully friendly staff. They couldn't have been more welcoming, helpful or fun. Thank you all for a fantastic evening xx
S. T.
Great venue for live music. Reasonable bar too.
D. T.
Went to see fish and it was a great venue as it wasn't to big
Just seen another band there and this time the upstairs wasn't open. There was plenty of room downstairs
P.
First time i have been here to see From The Specials, dont be deceived by the outside and general area as it was decent inside. Good size for decent crowd whilst still feeling intimate. No issues with sound or lighting and had an awesome night. £5 a pint, parking nearby (free after 6pm), toilets nice inside.
C. S. U.
Great venue for live acts, lots of space inside and decent prices. Staff friendly and helpful.
S. w.
Just love this place. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the venue is big enough to attract some really good acts. Loads of nearby parking if needed too. If you're in the Southampton area and like your music live....its a must!
D. C.
Seen a few bands here and always a great atmosphere and good sound/lighting. Sometimes mainly standing and sometimes some seating. Hawklords they even put tables to give a lounge type atmosphere. Please support smaller venues and the artists too!
P. D.
Great venue with a decent bar and reasonable prices. Always gets good variety of up and coming indie/punk/folk/metal bands
M. L.
Excellent venue that puts on awesome events notably Nozfest and Nozlite which is run by a local promoter
B. L.
Great music venue, not to big & not too small. Could see the band on stage very well - it was a standing concert. Some seats & tables around the edge. Car park not far away.
m.
Thank you 1865. Fabulous communication from staff regarding finding somewhere for my husband who is immuno suppressed to sit and watch the incomparable Walter Trout and band. What an awesome evening. Can't tell you how much that means to us both. Love this venue 🤘
M. H.
A great venue, with a great set up for bands. A little awkward for parking, but if you live in town, it is an ideal place for a tribute band or two. They also have famous bands playing in there too.
M. S.
Sea Power were Brilliant at the 1865 on 12th April.
Their New Album, Everything Was Forever is out now ✌️
R. S.
Went to see Discharge there and had a great time. The sound was good and the bar served great cold beer. There's an outside smoking area.
J. H.
Would imagine knocking someone out with the doors to the loos in the ladies!!😳🤣🤣🤣 but clean and tidy. Lovely staff throughout!
R. V.
My favourite venue in Southampton. Not too big, nit too small. Great bands always playing.
P.
Despite a recent refurb that sees a great improvement to the toilets, I'm sorry but I was deeply disappointed regarding the amount of chairs available at last night's gig. All the sofas have been removed to make more standing space. There were a handful of high bar stalls (that are not use able for the majority of disabled). We had to ask for chairs and only 4 were given, I still didn't manage to get one of these. There were at least a dozen people with sticks/crutches and goodness knows how many like myself and my friend with hidden disabilities that needed a seat but couldn't get one. Why not open the balcony?I've only seen it open once in all the years we've been there. I asked at the bar and the security but they all shrugged it off as nothing to do with them. Very poor show, please sort it out.
L. C.
Nice venue, lots of space, with some bar tables and stools, clean toilets and they serve drinks in glasses and not plastic!
A. G.
Great small venue with reasonable bar prices.
G. M.
The Four Owls smashed it!! Great venue too.
M. L.
Fantastic venue, not too big and superb PA. Staff are very friendly too, which helps. Some amazing bands due to play here. Well worth checking out, one of the best new venues I've come across in years
B. D.
A great music venue. Ideal for a day/night out. Drinks a bit pricey though.
K. H.
Always good to come here. Quite a good beer selection for a pure venue like this.
D. W.
1st time visiting the to see The Quireboys and its a good little venue to go to. Good bar selling reasonably priced alcohol which is good. Band sound great inside.
J. B.
Great venue! Fantastic bar and service! The venue has undergone a refurbishment since Covid and a much improbement
Z. L.
Great gig venue easy to park. Bar well stocked and great service. Fantastic ska and reggae bookings and last but not least... the cleanest ladies toilets for a venue I have ever been to. 1865 goers treat it like their loo at home no wee and loo roll on the floor. A pleasure to pee! Security staff are pleasant polite and efficient. Will be back for another gig soon!
s. l.
A great little venue good atmosphere excellent bar staff look forward to going again as soon as possible
S. N.
Always been a great little venue but now improved. Sounds are better and the toilets have been upgraded.
M. H.
Great venue. Clean tidy and average bar price. Recommended
B. B.
Excellent venue , great size ,well organised bar and quick service . Great atmosphere and well staffed .
R. C.
Great venue, Polite and helpful staff, large bars and fairly priced.
G. H.
Great venue, lovely staff, friendly security, home to live music!
g. p.
Real character. Floor needs a clean. Must have seen some acts when it was the Dockers club?
L. M.
Great night watching Happy Mondaze, Oasis and The Ultimate Stone Roses. Best night I have had out in a while
M. L.
A great music venue. Good sound, good views of the stage.
Z. W.
Great venue. Friendly staff and a good selection of beer
C. R.
Great venue. As a wheelchair user I was treated with respect and dignity.
P. S.
The Steely Scam evening was absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to see them again.
R. O.
Good atmosphere and a great place to be. Bar is good and the toilets are better than many other venues.
Smoking/Vaping area needs work. The ground is uneven and impossible to see in the dark with inadequate lighting, and a large stack of cans marked "flammable" should not be there in a space with naked flame.
S. S.
Excellent venue including sound system. Good that they had Palmers on tap when I went although quality was a bit variable- suspect they had put a rather too new barrel on at one point.
N. W.
The drinks are an OK price for a music venue. The cloak room isn't always open, which can be annoying in the colder weather. The toilets and smoking area aren't wheelchair friendly and there are stairs to the main bar as the ground floor one isn't open unless it's a sold out gig.
The floors are constantly sticky, that's bearable though.
y.
It's a small but cute venue. As such it's easy to see and hear the act . It's not sparkling but it is functional. Standing only.
P. F.
Great grass roots music venue.
R. C.
Great first gig after lockdown, with sweet view from balcony and welcoming staff! Look forward to the next gig experience with you :)
L. “. W.
Incredible venue, selection of drinks is excellent, 10/10 night every time
L. H.
Amazing venue for live music! Only downfall was the drinks at the smaller bar, beer was limited and the bottled fizzy mixers were flat.
Enjoyable evening regardless ☺
D. H.
Brilliant music venue and a lovely pint of bitter.
G. T.
Great gig good selection of beers at reasonable price
R. G.
Excellent venue. Always a good atmosphere. Good sound system and amazing lighting. Friendly and helpful staff. Good selection of drinks. Newly refurbished loos are great.
G. P.
really great place, had a fantastic time seeing a drag show !
K. O.
Great gig, felt really safe. Staff were on the ball and service was quick!
d. b.
I go to the 1865 on a regular basis. I don't drink, so cannot comment on the beer. But, always have a great time. Removed the seating along the left wall. Seemed to have updated the toilets as well since last went.
D. G.
Great little grassroots music venue. Very friendly staff. Plenty of parking available within a few minutes walk. Highly recommended.
A. B.
Cosy old style venue with a decent stage where you can get close to the band. I saw Dream Syndicate there a great night out. The only negative is its located about 30 mins walk from the Soton central train station & off the beaten track.
S. M.
Brilliant venue for music events, old school feel to the place.
D. D.
This is a fantastic venue.
I've attended a few events at the 1865 pre-covid times and the staff have always been friendly and welcoming.
Brilliant use of space, the place seems bigger on the inside than it does from the out.
Now, while there is still a pandemic going on, I must say staff are incredibly well adapted to dealing with it to give visitors a superb experience, making everything so easy.
Would honestly give more stars if that were an option.
Thank you staff of the 1865... Truly.
m. h.
Good venue to watch events. Soft drinks a bit pricey overall a decent experience
A. M.
Awesome place for great music #WhenRiversMeet was I watched ❤️🤘💜🎵🎶
M. W.
Brilliant place got to see soft machine for my first ever gig
D. W.
Great little venue saw undercover hippie had a really good night support band were good as well will definitely go back
M. M.
Great music venue with friendly staff. Always worth checking what on / coming up. Music most nights
E. J.
Epic venue.... great bar staff
L. F.
Attended 1865 as a wedding guest last Saturday. The venue was chosen as the bride and groom are regular gig goers. So the music venue was perfect. Large open space and a stage area. The other end, up the stairs, is the bar area. There's a balcony type upstairs that runs the full length of the room.
The staff were fantastic. Really went out of their way to ensure guests were looked after. Bar staff were obviously very busy and still wore smiles and had friendly words to say.
Even the door staff were nice. And I'm not usually a fan of them. They were good fun while still tending their jobs.
All round excellent and helped with the perfect day. Would thoroughly recommend.
J. M.
Saw Sham 69. Great venue. Will be returning
s. w.
I always enjoy gigs at this venue. No accessible toilet though, so when I needed to pee I had to have a very friendly experience with the other women 😅
S. H.
This would get a full five if it wasn’t for having a low stage.
Saw Aldous Harding tonight and she was wonderful and she was herself despite being shouted at to stand up. That’s just not how she performs all the time. She should be comfortable when performing. However the stage in this instance would have been much better raised.
Never the less, the venue is quite cool. Staff are wonderful, very friendly and polite. The security quite frankly, should release a semi naked calendar each year. The hottest security at a venue I think I’ve ever encountered. One chap was about 6’5” and incredibly dreamy. Calendar please!!!! I’d totally buy them.
Try the Palmers beer. Very good indeed. Also plastic cups to drink out of BUT they re use them and I swear I couldn’t have been happier when I saw the sign.
S. L.
My first visit. I was surprised how spacious it was. Beer was reasonably priced (but coke wasn't - £3 for a pint!). Acoustics were good. Well laid out, with a designated smoking area. Some limited seating, so arrive early if you need to sit.
M. P.
Superb covid gig. Staff were excellent, table service was very, very good. Well done
M. H. P.
Excellent venue, great bar
C. S.
This place could benefit from some investment. Pretty cool venue but the decor has seen seriously better days & the bathrooms are pretty dated. Beer selection is not normally very good (never is at gig venues) but I was last there at a beer Festival.
E. S.
There's someone for everyone at 1865
G. N.
Excellent live music venue
A. W.
Excellent gig popular crowd we were up on the balcony great venue can't wait for the next gig
N. W.
Really enjoyed playing here with Shattercones supporting New Model Army, the venue layout is really decent, the sound and lighting is top notch, the staff are friendly and accommodating. A rockin' joint that hopefully I'll get to play again. Rock on!
J.
Love this place. With the recent changes it has elevated it so much. Always great to see what's going on. Always have shows that aren't the norm. Top place
d. s.
This is a great venue. Not too big, not too small. The sound is superb, with none of those echoey problems that you would associate with other venues. I f you want to go to a gig, go here; If you're a band, play here.
J. C.
Looks a bit rougher from the outside but once you get in, there's a good atmosphere. Door staff were fine with the option of paying 2 pounds to use a cloak room. 2 bars, the stage could probably be doing with being a foot higher if you can't get nearer the front.
J. W.
Friendly venue. Very well organised. So good to visit for first gig since pandemic started. Great time, thank you
L. J.
Fantastic place and enough bar staff for the occasion!
J. A.
Terrific sound, comfortable venue with seating if required. Easy parking.
B. L. G.
Cool venue staffws by beauriful humans ♡
L. w. L. t. D. L.
Went to a 21st birthday party. Friendly staff.
D. K.
Idles absolutely took the roof off this incredible venue tonight. Great sound, great show. 👍
D. J.
Not somewhere I would normally go. But some friends bought some tickets to see a band. Was a really good night out, quick service and great bands.
D. V.
Really great venue, from a musicians perspective sound is always really good and the atmosphere and staff are helpful, supportive and friendly
C. T.
Great venue, lots of bar staff, good security staff too and an excellent experience only marred by one obnoxious member of the audience stood by us who punched me in the chin accidentally whilst drunken dancing... He apologised and tamed down once he realised what he had done.
S. A.
Always a good night out here!
R. W.
Great venue in every respect, owner, staff, security..... all cool.
S. B.
Visited twice now, both times to music events. Good venue. Has some seating around the sides, with a small bar to right hand side, and as you go up some stairs there is a bigger main bar. Also a further seating area up a few more stairs. I believe they hold other events also, i.e vintage clothing sales, record fair.
This occasion we went to March of the Mods raising money for teenage Cancer trust. My son's band, The New Shoes, were playing.
L. M.
Good size venue and bar and security staff were polite and did a great job as did all the organisers. The Dualers and warm-up band were brilliant. Will definitely go there again.
M. D.
The 1865 is a cracking venue. It's like seeing a band in a very large living room, and unlike some other small venues, the sound system is actually really good. There's no feedback or such high volume that your internal organs get rearranged during the gig.
I have already bought tickets to another gig here and I'm really excited for it.
L. W.
Great owners. Somewhat dated and grubby with sticky carpets but it is a music venue after all, when you're moshing and sweating whilst enjoying your favourite bands I guess no one really cares! Close proximity to housing estate means you need to be respectful and on your best behaviour when leaving. **SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT VENUES! ** HAVE FUN AND KEEP MUSIC ALIVE!!**
J. J.
This is one of the best live music venues I've been to.. the staff are incredible as a carer to two disabled gentlemen they are always very accomodating and make sure they are well positioned and comfortable..and the acts they secure are outstanding.
A. W.
Enjoyed a really good night at the 1865 attending a rock/metal music gig featuring the bands Winter's Edge, Killit and the headliner Diamond Head from the NWOBHM (new wave of British heavy metal) back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Loved the music of course, Diamond Head are great, but was especially impressed by Killit who performed a brilliant set and looked like they were genuinely enjoying themselves and really interacted with the crowd.
The 1865 is a small, local venue with a capacity of up to 750, if everyone is standing, and hosts a variety of events including; music of pretty much any genre, stand-up comedy, corporate dining and wedding receptions. Due to it's size the facilities are fairly limited but they are adequate and functional with both the ladies and gents restrooms/toilets situated directly off the main function room. They have a cloakroom service but I am unable to confirm its efficiency or prices because for some reason it was not available at the event I attended, which I found very inconvenient.
On the night that I was there, when the doors opened we were led directly into the lobby where the ticket/box office facilities are situated and then through another set of doors into the main room. The main room had a large, clear dancefloor area with a good sized stage taking up the back wall. There were indoor barriers put up to keep the spectators at least 2 metres away from the stage which I was disappointed by as I felt it wasn't necessary. There were several small but comfortable looking booths built along one wall, all of which had 'reserved' signs on their tables, and along the opposite wall there was a long section of bench seating which had a few quite large tables placed in front of it. The bar area is raised and is at the opposite end of the room to the stage accessed via a short flight of stairs from the dancefloor. They had a reasonable range of alcoholic and soft drinks at prices very similar to other local venues of this type, ie. not the cheapest in town but certainly not the most expensive either. There is an upstairs area situated above the bench seating and tables which I believe is accessed from the bar area via another flight of stairs and has further seating and a balcony looking out over the dancefloor. Unfortunately this section was not in use during my visit and was entirely blocked off using heavy black curtains so my description of it may not be accurate.
All in all the 1865 is generally good and definitely worth going to.
A. W.
Cool little venue. Spacious and seating available which is helpful. 2 bars make it easy to get drinks as well and staff were lovely.
L. H.
I like this place as a venue. The staff were friendly and it is a big space however it really needs some work done to it. It just needs some modernisation. The drinks weren't too expensive though
K. P.
Amazing venue. Great sound, nice and relaxed security.
S. S.
My first visit and I like the venue. I look forward to seeing Fat White Family in May. I wasn't to impressed with Carl Palmer of ELP fame. Don't get me wrong technical Carl and his players were excellent but the music seemed so sterile,no feeling. I know for sure FWF will smash it in May!!
Update...Fat White Family were excellent!!
D. S.
Great, low-key venue with attracts an alternative crowd. I've been with friends to a few rock and metal nights which is a refreshing change from the norm of house/commercial dominated bars and nightclubs in the area.
The venue is tucked away in an alleyway near Oxford Street/Queensway. The venue itself is unlike the decor of a bar/nightclub but is a vintage-style large, theatre-like event room. The doorway leads directly into the large open dancefloor with a stage at the rear where the DJ is situated. Seating is dotted along the outskirts. Up the stairs leads you to the bar, and they also had games set up as well which was a cool touch. The Entry was £5 for us to get in, which I think is reasonable.
Great playlist if you're into rock and metal and the crowd and atmosphere are very friendly and welcoming. Even if you're like me and you don't really look like you would fit in, I love it. Can escape the normal, commercial bars I see myself in often. Will be back
G. D.
Great venue with gash beer 🍻.
b. b.
great venue, very big. Hidden away at the bottom end of Southampton. good bar, nice selection of drinks. great choice of bands and entertainment here.
H. T.
I went to a Yungblud concert at this venue. The staff are class and care about your well being whilst being fun and friendly.
B. R.
I bought a ticket for 80th night, to be honest, either I lost my mind or the DJ didnt know 80th. We managed to dance with all those slow songs. Thanks to 2 MJ and 1 Madonna songs from 80th :) but nice people were there and we enjoyed.
J. H.
Cool venue, small enough to feel intimate. Good beer and short cues at the bars. Music was very loud, maybe I'm just getting old. Will definitely go again.
t. p.
Decent venue, enjoy going to shows here.
H. C.
I mainly visit this venue when I attend Apocalypse events every second Saturday of each month. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and the building itself lends itself to such a diverse range of requirements for different events. It has real character.
D. J.
Great venue with a wide selection of drinks available.
D. P.
Unique Thai restaurant, great for bookworms.
Massaman curry really good, but price on the high side.
J. F.

K. D.
Enjoyed the night watching Hands off Gretal with support from local band Arid Wave
D. S.
Large open venue just right for live bands But far too many people in there , average time to get served 30 mins (staff do work hard ) toilets absolutely disgusting , always over flowing and have been like that for years , possibly more people than legally permitted 🤔but on the whole a nice sized venue , outside could look more inviting , scruffy , still looks like the old dockers club ....
s. v.
Went to a well organised socially distanced gig. So good to see live music again!
T. M.
An excellent music venue often used by Geoff to promote excellent Prog music bands!
A.
Real music fans will know why I've given this venue a high mark, its all about the music. If they improve the decor slightly it will achieve full marks.
S. C.
