It’s always a pleasure to see someone operating at the top of their game and genuinely focusing (sorry!) on their customer which is in sharp contrast to the patronising, scripted advice and upsell you often get at the big optical chains. After a nice welcoming chat, they really took the time to absolutely nail my prescription, whilst offering some really useful, pragmatic advice to maintain my eye health. This was followed up with a styling consultation for a new pair of glasses where the guys suggested frames that would work for me- perfectly blending form and function. The end result was a pair of glasses that fit and suit me perfectly. I could not be happier with them. So if you own a pair of eyes and you would like them to work as well as they possibly can and have eyewear that everyone else is not wearing on tube ... these are your guys. Overall experience 15/10.

I have just reconnected with Spex in the City after a 10 year gap, being away from London. I first encountered them via the previous owner Gillian, who made such an effort to make this the business it is. Nothing has changed. The collection of spectacle frames is as extensive and eclectic as ever. I bought 2 pairs and the customer service is first class from assistance with selection through to fitting and aftercare, thanks Adam. I recommend Spex in the City as a first class outlet, and will be back soon for some prescription sunglasses!

Once again had excellent service after a mini-disaster when my last pair (also from Spex in the City which had given me 5 years service) fell from the top of a roller-coaster. From the Eye-test on site which was relaxed, thorough and unrushed to help in choosing frames and lenses the staff were brilliant and helpful. They even went as far as providing me with temporary glasses as I was out of spare glasses whilst I wait for the order to arrive. Due to the range they have and the service they provide I'm always happy to recommend!

I walked into Spex in the City randomly in the summer and think it was hands down one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long time. The entire experience from starting to talk about what sort of frames I was on the search for, to the after purchase service, has been a delight. In comparison to a lot of the high street stores the Spex in the City shop is enchantingly small in size, but big on choice and service. Clearly there has been a lot of thought put into the glasses on offer as it was so hard to choose from all the unique frames, but thankfully the utterly charming service from the team there, including the owner of the shop Gillian whom I mainly dealt with, helped me select a pair that I genuinely felt great wearing – the compliments from my friends reinforced this. I recommend giving Spex and the City a visit – a wonderful surprise for anyone that wears glasses.

Great place! I only discovered it fairly randomly: I urgently needed a pair of same day specs and the place I'd found nearby that could do my (fairly strong) lenses on the day didn't have any frames I liked, so I went searching for alternatives. Not only did they have some great frames including including the pair I ended up with that I'm very happy wth indeed, but it turned out they could get them made up on the day. I was very happy, and I enjoyed shopping there. Much less impersonal than lots of opticians, as well as having very different specs compared to the same old you get in most places. I don't think they do much in the way of cheap frames, they're not astronomically expensive by any means, and I think for the quality they have their prices are pretty good.

Not only is this shop a charming and idiosyncratic place to be, with an adventurous range of frames, their service turned out to go above and beyond. A pair of glasses I'd ordered had had the wrong type of lens installed. Gordon and his colleagues were so quick to correct the problem and provide perfect replacements free of charge. LOVE this store and its proprietor. The glass frames are original, handmade and artistic. The owner travels the world for the right materials and makes only limited editions of each frame. We ended up buying a new one-of-a-kind frame- truly a piece of art-- but there was no pressure at all to buy. The store is warm and inviting.The service was excellent. As Americans we were also able to get a VAT refund on our way out of the EU. Definitely worth a look-see!! We'll go to London again-- with this as one of our priority stops!

Forget about the big chains and go to the Spex team for outstandingly beautiful frames and bespoke service. The Spex people know what they are doing and have an eye for eyewear. They understood immediately what works for me and presented me with a great set of options (most of which designed by the Spex director, Gillian). I also appreciated the time the team took with me and the relaxed atmosphere in the beautiful Seven Dials shop. Five days later I had some very special spectacles -- and at a very competitive price.

Spex and the City is a dream to anybody who loves wearing glasses. The shop sells a wonderful range of unique spectacles and sunglasses, including the owner’s own collection of classic and affordable frames. The diverse and colourful frames, however, are not the only reason why I love Spex in the City. It is also the excellent customer service and HONEST opinions of the staff that makes this place ideal for anyone who wants to try something a little bit different, without regretting it later. These guys aren’t afraid to tell you a certain frame doesn’t suit your face shape, which is a refreshing change from the usual up-selling mentality in retail. I’m now the proud owner of three pairs of Spex in the City glasses and I can’t wait to get my latest pair of Gillian Caplan ‘Ravi’ frames back!

This is the best shop I've been to for frames. While every other shop has the same boring, overpriced junk, this shop has loads of options from interesting designers, and it's all curated by people that know what they're doing. Always a pleasure to shop here, really great advice and service, and I always appreciate it when they're able to get everything sorted fast, so that I can new glasses home on short visits to London.

Fantastic experience once again! I live Mexico and, come to London, at least once a year, and Spex is a must stop for me. I'm becoming a usual suspect to the shop and have bought now a couple of pair of lenses there. The range is amazing, but most importantly, what makes a difference is the staff; Gordon; super professional, and so stylish; he knows what he's talking about; he knows his frames, materials and even is well versed on graduation/optometric stuff too, a holistic approach that is. I find a major pleasure been guided by him when buying lenses; lenses are not an easy business and he knows what he is talking about, makes you feel great, and you know he's not telling you what you want to hear, but what is really good for you and he will also tell you what doesn't fit all right. Priceless and unique in these days when everyone is trying to sell no matter what. I miss this type of experiences when buying quality and unique stuff as that sold in Spex in the City, by Covent Garden. Cheers!

I came across Spex in the city after being recommended them by a friend. I'd previously had my eyewear curated and maintained by David Clulow, but after a particularly difficult incident with themselves and when giving Vision Express and a few other recent additions to the eyewear high street a try with little luck I decided to give them a try. I needed to get some lenses cut for one of my favourite pairs of glasses and it had seemed everywhere I tried would brush me off and say it was not possible. After talking with Spex and the City and their manager Adam, he told me he'd look into it further and I got a real feeling that he would, I felt he was both polite, honest and professional. Having had my faith in optometrists shattered a few times, I was pleasantly surprised when not only did I hear back with a positive but the work was carried out both successfully and to a high standard. Faith in Optometrists restored! I would like to thank Adam and the team at Spex in the city for their work and also for rebuilding my trust, I will certainly be back in a few months for my eye test and to look at some new glasses, which is something I've put off in light of my recent troubles. I've been looking for a decent pair of glasses for months. It turns out, I'm quite fussy.. or my face is wrong. Either way, all I found was the same old everywhere I went. Spex In The City? Totally different ball game! I could have walked out of there and been happy with any number of pairs - and while perhaps not the cheapest, I'm totally impressed with what I got.
