Reviews of RSPB Sandwell Valley
K. G.
Lovely walk around the lake, spent half an hour in the hide watching a heron and an egret and other birds. Place is kept lovely and clean with a group of volunteers. Nice visitor centre where we enjoyed a cup of tea while watching the birds feed. I bought 3 pin badges and a plant for the garden. Nice place to spend a couple of hours.
B. C.
Lovely reserve with visitor centre and toilets. There is a circular walk, which does take a while but it is mostly flat and it's a good path.
I really recommend the hide overlooking scrapes. Staffed by friendly informative staff.
The hide is great for kids and budding photographers.
We saw the cute Little Ringed Plovers, Common Sandpiper, Oystercatcher chicks.
Kingfisher corner is a quieter, more overgrown patch.
R. L.
A great day out for the family. A lovely walk around the area with little activities for children. The hide gets you nice and close to the birds and there is a volunteer to guide you as well as binoculars and identification charts. A great introduction to bird watching.
D. T.
Unfortunately only had a hr so was only a quick visit. The staff at the visitors centre were great and helpful. The site is very good with some excellent wildlife. Well worth a visit if you get chance.
A. J.
We usually do country walks but decided to try here and loved it ,didn't realise how big and well laid out it is, good to see so many birds , we will start going here regularly.
A. J.
First time here and really enjoyed it. We went for a 4 mile walk.
R. R.
What a brilliant place to visit! Went as part of a school experience. So much for the little ones on offer, as well as walks and the hide! Love riding my bike on the trails too! Toilets are clean and the cafe serves gorgeous coffee.
J. S.
What a wonderful place to visit. The staff and volunteers are so welcoming, thier happy to help with knowledge and share experience of bird watching. The lake is beautiful to take a walk around with rich variety of wildlife. Public toilets are well kept with lovely picnic area and the lake area is clean barley any litter.
a. M.
Lovely place to go for a walk, much bigger than it first appears. The car park is quite cheap, it was £2.60 for 4 hours when we visited. There's a really lovely bird sanctuary on the main path. If you have binoculars you should definitely bring them. There are all sorts of bird species to see.
The path is pushchair and wheelchair friendly. There's an RSPB visitor centre at the top of hill also it's got a spectacular view of the park and the bird sanctuary.
N. B. There is quite a lot of work happening on the site next to the park and it can be a bit noisy. I believe it's purpose is to build up the local flood defences. It's not a massive distraction is out of the way everything else, you won't have to go around it or anything like that.
v. r.
Nice nature reserve run by the RSPB, nice big lake with plenty of birds around, they have a dedicated hide, plenty of walks and things to see. Well worth a visit
D. B.
A beautifully well kept area for families to learn about and experience nature, with a variety of types of wildlife to observe. The trail around Forge Mill lake is a very pleasant walk and minibeast meadow is a great feature.
P. E.
Nice & peaceful during the week & still not overcrowded at weekends. You can walk all around and it is only a short walk from Swan Pool which is another pleasant stroll
N. P.
Some great natural areas. Good path around the lake and also good links to Priory Woods and the rest of Sandwell parks.

As part of a health kick my friends and I went for a walk... I have lived in Sandwell most of my life and never knew this place was there. We walked and meet some lovely people on the way... Lovely area to walk. We felt safe. Safety etiquette observed.
P. M.
Absolutely love this place. Its amazing getaway right in the middle of the busy city. We are walking there for a quite few years few times a month. Amazing volunteers from RSPB who take care of this lovely area and constantly improving it making it amazing for us to walk and for wildlife. :)
K. D.

D. D.
A huge surprise to discover this beautiful reserve hidden minutes away from motorways and town centres. Volunteer staff were so friendly and we were amazed to see such a variety of bird and plant life
A.
Fantastic place to enjoy nature with children. Lots to do. Favourite, so far.
S. P.
A lovely place to have a walk around. A few interactive sections for the kids, such as; a music section, a mud kitchen and wooden train, a bug section, a small assault style course made from logs along the way. You can also hire the pond dipping equipment for £3. Or join onto one of their events or trails.
Today, we joined onto the nature event and the kids throughly enjoyed it! They got to go pond dipping which was good fun. The women who run it named Alex, was very informative and engaging with the children. The kids also did 2 trails and bug hunting.
We spent 4 hours here today.
R. C.
The amazing oasis, and so well supported by the RSPB and truly dedicated groupspf volunteers!! thank you. During lockdown you are one of the wonderful green spaces in this area.

T. D.
Have been to rsvb on a number of occasions with loved one, delightful walk. Hardly anyone around, able to fully enjoy scenery and company.
N. M.
Very nice place. Could do with a bigger area for teas and coffees. As we only sat in the foyer. But other than that was nice.
D. P.
Beautiful part of the country. A must visit. Didn't know it existed until this week. Take your dog's for a walk here.
I. T.
A decent enough place to go for a walk. However, the lake is only surrounded by grassy fields and the nature trail is rather mundane.
M. H.
Good long walk around the pools. The hide and the RSPB centre are closed on Monday, but the birds are still there.
T. P.
Great place to get information and wonderful views of the lake. Also a nice place for refreshments.

The RSPB Nature Reserve Sandwell Valley is a Wonderful place to visit, whether you're a Bird watcher or not. If you appreciate the great outdoors and nature this'll be right up your passage. It's a haven for bird life and nature and a calm peaceful place to spend a few hours or the day. The Visitors Centre is brilliant and a good venue to discover, and have refreshments. I had a tub of chocolate ice cream and a drink which was right up my passage, and made me go Ummm, yum yum ! I thought it but didn't verbalise it, I'm not completely stupid ! Or am I ! ??? 🤔🙄✌️
A. B.

Nice friendly staff. Lots for little ones to do. Little cafe for light snacks and drinks. The Wild Craft activities are great. Thoroughly enjoyed.
M. B. (.
Kids love it. Fantastic place for mindfulness and just living in the moment.
Loads of varieties of birds and multiple locations to sit and enjoy nature at its best.
Free during Covid but usually an RSPB membership is needed. These cost from £6 per month for two people and you receive s great Bird book to help you identify which species you are watching and other perks.
Look out for the sculptures and carvings dotted around.
B.
So nice and good place to look at nature
S. K.
Love it. Great place to spend a few peaceful hours.

M. C.
Great place for walking, running, dog walking, bird spotting or just sitting quiet. RSPB hut for refreshments and toilets.
M. B.
Great place with plenty of different birds. Did clock a buzzard in the distance but too far away for a good shot.

E. W.
Great place to walk & to take in all the best that nature has to offer. Just to be able to stop for a.moment & enjoy what's around you is worth the visit. Being that it is so close looking forward to going back soon.
P. C.
Very beautiful and relaxing place to visit great to walk around the lakes and along side of the river the visitor centre is nice and clean and it's good to go in the hide to watch the birds on the lake
The only downside is the walk from the bus stop to get to the RSPB
P. S.
A wonderful inner city oasis of nature.
s. S.
Love coming here with the dogs, nice walk around the lake even in wet weather as since they have done the paths it's no longer boggy.
l. a. a. p.
Lovely visit and I have become a member of the RSPB. Lovely walks and a variety of little feathered friends around the area. The Hide is brilliant where you can get as close as possible to many species. Lovely to see the Oyster Catcher sitting on her eggs. Would definitely recommend for all the family.
D. C.
We went to RSPB Sandwell Valley for an advertised scavenger hunt. My eight year old daughter loved the scavenger hunt and the little explorers trail and musical instruments along the way! The bird observatory on the lake was awesome! The man gave my daughters some binoculars so she could see the baby birds and she loved that! After the scavenger hunt she got to make a collage with all the items she had collected. She also got a little prize for completing the hunt. We did some pond dipping and then my daughter played in the mud kitchen. She loved the mud kitchen and has asked for one for her birthday! The lady behind the counter was lovely and friendly. An awesome bank holiday day out. My daughter can't wait to go back again! ❤️
G.
A lovely day out for the children and adults alike. Some great activities for the kids, which you pay for separately and you are allowed to take dogs.
S. L.
Really pleasant walk, very friendly locals, staff and volunteers. Really enjoyed it!
S. B.
Obviously during Covid, the visitor centre and bird hide is closed but this shouldn't put you off visiting. Plenty of parking. Lovely walk around Forge Mill lake and along the River Tame. Lots of wildlife to be seen.
J. A.
Very nice grounds set beside a well maintained river.
Large variety of bird species to see and a bird hide manned by very welcoming and friendly RSPB volunteers.
I've been 3 times now and learned something every time. Everyone I've met has been so friendly and knowledgeable.
Lovely place.
A. J.
Another great place for long walks. A little disappointing.that you can always hear motorway traffic but remarkable all the same that such a pretty expanse exists so close. Lovely lakes to.walk round. Woods to.explore. And fun parks for the kids.
T. h.
Fantastic day out with some lovely trails and activities.
S. B.
The volunteers were so friendly, helpful & knowledgeable. It is a truly tranquil relaxing place to visit & watch the antics of so many different types of birds. We had a lovely day there & will return soon.
A. N.
Nice nature reserve that is larger than I expected. We visited on a Bank Holiday Monday so it was reasonably busy. The hide wasn't open at the time as they were short on volunteers but that didn't detract. We did the circular walk around the lake. It took us quite a while but we had a two year old and a five year old with us. Because of the lake it meant we couldn't really take a short cut back to the car so we were committed to the walk! The nearby farm looked very popular and we might try there next time.
R.
Really nice to be with nature. Clean and great for children
s. h.
They have an office for RSPB and a viewing point with free telescope use. 1 mile walk around the lake. Great for the kids but do need monitoring as the path is next to the river Teme. Lots of ducks, geese etc; can easily spend 2-3 hours here.
C. D.
First visit, lovely place. Went into the hide, volunteer there was so friendly and knowledgeable.
I. W.
Nice visitors centre where you can use the RSPB telescopes to view the wild life and chat with friendly volunteers.
K. C.
A wonderful urban green space full of surprises. This was our first visit to the RSPB at Sandwell Valley. Excellent visitor centre with great views over the lakes and surrounding countryside. The staff were very friendly and helpful and there was plenty to do and see, especially for children visiting during the school holidays.
We strolled down to the birdhide at lakeside, where the RSPB staff and volunteers were simply excellent. We were loaned binoculars and use of a scope, whilst one of the staff explained what birds we were likely to see, points of interest and unusual sightings of visiting birds.
Bird activity on the lake was high, including an adult grey Heron fishing for prey!
A great way to spend a couple of hours. We shall definitely return.
S. W.
Staff always ready to help. In the hide they will lend you binoculars and tell you about the birds that are there. In the visitor centre there are activities for the young children. And the walk around the lake is present 2 mile mostly on good hard paths
A. W. M. M.
RSPB Sandwell Valley is a great oasis within the urban area of Sandwell and neighbouring Birmingham. Within the visitors centre there is seating so that families can buy drinks and watch birds visiting the feeders at the back of the centre, with binoculars and scopes available to help see the different varieties of bird. Activities for children are available to either do in the centre or to walk around the RSPB area to identify various species of wildlife. Just simply walking around the area can help you unwind. There is a charge for parking adjacent to the actual centre but the is a car park as soon as you enter the access road which is free. These car parks are closed overnight so be aware of these times which change during the year. It would be a good idea to visit the RSPB Sandwell Valley Web site for opening times and special activities.
W. G.
Great place for a visit. Friendly staff and a variety of wildlife to observe.
J. D.
A treasure of nature close to an urban environment. In an hour or so it easy to see up to 40 bird species. Free parking if you are an RSPB member, otherwise it is £3. Or you can park near the road and walk in. It takes about 10 minutes. Excellent visitor centre with very friendly, helpful and well informed staff. A selection of hot & cold drinks plus snacks on sale so you can birdwatch in comfort. There is one excellent bird hide open some week days and at weekends. Very clean toilets in the visitor centre. All in all a great half day out. If you wish you can walk on into the Sandwell Valley and visit other places and nature centres. Highly recommended.
S. S.
Nice and quiet. Great for a walk, reading and spend time with nature.
N. M.
Small reserve with 1 hide, but you can leave the actual reserve and walk round the lake.
The hide had good opportunities to photograph the resident Kingfishers.
R. G.
Nature reserve centred around a lake, with a good picnic area (including one wheelchair space at a table - moderately accessible to intrepid wheelchair users), refreshments on sale, toilets, etc. And birds of course!
H. R.
Beautiful oasis in a dense urban area. Plenty of wildlife and a lovely visitor centre to sit and have a cuppa and enjoy the view of birds feeding and the lake. Staff on hand to guide you. Warm and friendly. Highly recommended.
P. N.
Lovely views, great place to walk and absolutely great place to explore and get stuck into nature...
N. C.
Beautiful circular walks around the lakes and bird sanctuary. GREAT family day out. They've got a great cafe at rspb where you can watch wild parakeets on the feeders.
C. H.
Had a lovely stroll around Sandwell Valley with my wife. Glorious sunshine today made it a fantastic experience. We were delighted to find the RSPB centre was open (hadn't expected that on a Bank Holiday) so we were able to buy so.e lattes and sit outside to drink them at their picnic tables. A great way to relax in the sun.
K. A.
Not open everyday. Kids love it when its open. they have a children's bird club . you have go book. And it is well worth the money, this is one day a week. But I'm sure it would be note successful if it opened more. Car park which you have to pay for. Beautiful surroundings. Vending machines for light snack , tea and coffer. Pity about opening times. Would go more often.
L. B.
What a hidden gem. A beautiful place to be with the free facilities of the hide too! Pond dipping is a must with all the equipment provided for just £3. Parking is £3 but if you sign up to the RSPB it is free - not only that you get choice of fantastic welcoming gifts. I signed up for a family membership for £5 per month, adults get a bimonthly magazine and children a monthly issue. Haven't even explored it all yet.....can't wait!
J. K.
The rspb is a wonderful place for all the family lots of activities, farms, walking areas also some beautiful views ideal for avid bird watching there are four lakes to walk around well spaced out with ample parking
b. r.
Great hide on the water's edge to see a wide variety of species. Look out for the ring necked parakeets. Also if it's cold you can see a fair deal from the cafe as it looks over the lake and has feeders strategically placed. Enjoy! £3 to park money goes on upkeep, or free if you are an RSPB member.
M. J.
My wife and I visited here for the first time today and were extremely impressed with the whole Reserve. The three volunteers we met were both friendly and knowledgeable, the Visitor's building was clean and welcoming (excellent toilets!), the walks had interest created by the superb viewpoints with benches, well signposted, no litter, great main viewing point, in fact we can only be complimentary as this showcased the very best of what the RSPB can provide. Will certainly visit again and recommend it wherever we can. Thank you all for your work.
K. C.
Plenty to explore, RSPB visitors centre great for bird watchers and children as sometimes activities going on there for them. Preserved very well. Also Forge Mill Farm and Sandwell Farm are some places to visit within the valley itself.
D. V.
Really lovely walk with lots of educational signs and activities for children. The visitor’s centre has a great café and an enormous glass window to sit at and bird-watch in the warm whilst enjoying a coffee.
N. B. D.
Great day out for adults and kids
L. C.
Almost a secret reserve hidden at the edge of a housing estate. Small visitors' centre with toilets, drinks and snacks. Very friendly staff and plenty of child orientated ideas in the centre and around the reserve. Really enjoyed the visit and will go back. £3 to park for non-RSPB members.
J. W.
Beautiful ponds and so many nooks and crannies. For example is the little natural tutorial area to sit and share knowledge. The event was great, they have lots of other ones on over the holidays. Can’t rate it highly enough. They had a good selection of teas, soya milk and vegan crisps which was an added...
J. M.
Lovely little mini café. I'd like to see it expanded to do more, but as it stands, staff are lovely and you couldn't beat the view.
R. S.
A shorter walk than expected but lovely. The first moment we walked out there were parakeets flying around and on the feeders! Great to see. Knowledgeable and helpful volunteers, including in the hide. Lots of cormorants, a heron and little Egrets. We saw a jay as we were walking round and lots of squirrels. We had a peppermint tea in the visitors centre, no soya mylk or vegan options. Finished off with a picnic on one of the many picnic benches.
C. H.
Very friendly staff, happy to point birds out to my children. Pleasant walk around the lake and a hide that is open at specified times looking over the lake. Small coffee shopl/cafe in the centre
G. H.
Great place to just walk the dog and let the world pass you by. New visitors centre is very clean and staff are very knowledgeable. The lake side hide is fantastic to while away a couple of hours bird watching
S. H.
Lovely place and very educational. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Jack and Michelle were amazing with my 3year old grandson 👍🏻👍🏻
a. s.
Very nice 👌 for walking
I. C.
Nice lake for a walk or run
S. C.
New visitors centre is a big improvement over the last building. The hide is great for bird watching and taking photos from. There's also viewing posts around the lake to take advantage of the various species. #FamilyFriendly
J. a.
If you love nature then this is a great place to visit. Nice visitor centre and hide with bird watching opportunities, you can view bird feeders and the Lake from the centre there are binoculars and a scope to use if you haven't got any. Entry is free, free parking for rspb members. I saw lesser redpoll for the first time! And had a Robin feed out of my hand (take some bird seed, not bread as this is bad for birds) Children's activities are available, e.g pond dipping. Friendly volunteers in centre and the hide to help you identify birds etc. Toilets, drinks machine and good range of snacks to buy but unfortunately no cafe, but nice place to have a picnic. If you walk around the lake you can access forge mlil farm, which is free to visit and see the farm animals, buy a drink or icecream, they also have a nice gift shop toilets and small play area it is a circular route.
D. G.
A real hidden treasure. A lovely place to be at one with nature for all ages
K. T.
Really beautiful place to walk around and explore, not too busy either
Y. G.
Accompanied a group of reception aged children on a school trip and enjoyed the day. Children had a wonderful time, pond dipping and mini beast hunting. The volunteers who helped were really accommodating and helpful.
A. M.
Very nice recreational park. Includes an ornithology hut, 3 different mountain bike tracks to suit various skill levels. Has a zip line amongst other outdoor recreational equipment.
A. T. D.
Really nice place, lovely place to go and be in nature. Couple of places to feed, geese, ducks and swans. Really beautiful place to walk around
C. L.
Rather disappointing not many birds to see...
S. P.
Great place to visit if you like bird watching, friendly staff in the cafe and expert infomation from the guides in the viewing hide. If you are taking your dog they must be kept on the lead, it's a nature reserve.
N. T.
