Reviews of Hengistbury Head Beach
S. B.
Went here on a day that had some moody weather and it was great. The beach isn't the best for going sunbathing as it's mainly rocky but it's a great place to walk and spend a few hours enjoying nature.
Parking charges aren't horrendous, there's plenty of space for cars and there are toilets and a cafe next to the car park.
V. V.
Ringo car parking available from £1.70/ hour
Massive car parking so if not that busy you can easily secure a place.
What an outstanding view - had a chance to witness one of the best sunset.
Cafe and pub are near by and very friendly neighbourhood.
D.
Countless times I Have been here and its always a breath of fresh air and the views are just as fantastic every time. many reasons to come here. the walk down to the beach huts and the little café at the end is totally worth it.
R. V.
Lovely beach. Amazing views. Small cafe with big queues at peak times but great to go somewhere so dog friendly.
M. V.
Great beach for the kids and dogs.
A lot more relaxed than Bournemouth main beach which is just absolute chaos.
The pebble beach at Henglesea can be a bit rough on the feet, so shoes are a must until you get your spot.
Very scenic, very very clean, didn't see one piece of litter at any time there.
The sea is lovely and refreshing.
Lots of space to enjoy.
M. S.
Loved it here, however I would personally avoid it during peak times as it was super busy. Queues were long.amazing place for photography, but hard to get clean shots when so many people around. The beach was lovely and clean, great for kids. The bar and cafe were great. Although £4.50 for a milkshake! Eeek! However, £2.20 for a latte, if there is no queue. The food was reasonably priced. All the young kids seemed to be having a whale of a time! All in all a great place to go.
L. C.
Amazing place. Great for a walk at the beach or to the Hengistbury Head. It's beautiful and there is a coffee shop, toilets and lots of parking spaces too.
S.
Lovely quiet part of beach, carpark with cafe, you have to pay parking. Great views from the top of hill, dig friendly
R. L.
Stunning view with Spring colours.
One of the best places to visit nearby Bournemouth.
T. P.
Lovley spot to take photos. If you are beach view lover you will be not dissapointed
Ig: @travel.palma
B. B.
A great place to visit, especially if you have a dog. The car park was quite reasonably priced, as it was off season. The toilets were clean and tidy. A lot of walkers and cyclists, but plenty of room for all. The views from the top are fantastic. Not the sort of place I would choose to go in the high season, or when the weather forecast is for wind and rain!
R. C.
Great place for all the family. I love it here, it's such a beautiful place. You have the cafe for ice-cream and hot food. They also have a small wheeled train that stops by the shops on peek season. You have the hills to climb for the more active. Lots of space on the grass sides if you want to have a kick about or fly a kite. Beach is mixed sand and pebbles but not horrifically pebbley. Dogs are welcome to, lots of space around for them run free to. Only negative car park is small so on busy days or sunny days you won't find a space for hours. Overall though my favourite beach to go to.
L.
Beautiful beach, can do a huge loop!
D. M.
Dunes at the western side are great. The beach turns very stoney beneath the cliff. National Trust unspoilt heathland backing onto the coastal edge. Great place to be if you like dogs as there are loads of them.
I.
Such a great place for family and dog walks, there are a cafe also.
G. R.
This is a beautifully tranquil location, in the right weather the views are breathtaking, a brilliant walk with totally accessible paths although a bit of a steep incline at the Boscome end but honestly we’ll worth it.
H. B.
Park in the large car park and short walk to the sandy beach (some pebbles too). Facilities in the car park (toilets , cafe, shop). Nice swimming but no life guard.
W. C. M. &. C. M. S.
The view is amazing, relaxing and you can enjoy a great walk of fresh air 😌
K. M.
Wonderful walk by the clifftop and on the beach. Cafe does a lovely cuppa and they also serve vegan sausage roll. Highly recommend
D.
Great views lovely walk and plenty of fog walkers
A. H.
Lovely beeches, amazing clear water, beautiful walks, good facilities, lovely ferry rides to and from, muddyford and Christchurch, fun noddy train to and from car park to beech
D. C.
This place is beautiful. Very nice beaches. The walk is nice on a sunny day, with some great views. Just be aware that parking is very hard to find. One massive point.....Dont miss the last ferry out....or you'll have a very very long walk. I did and my kids did not appreciate the 8km walk to get to a taxi.
V. H.
Lots of good paths and a concrete one which would be great in the winter. No cycling on most paths but that was fine because we have dogs! Heath lovely in the late summer. Great views, lovely beach which is dog friendly. Car park nearby which is fairly pricey. Ie £4 for 2 hours.
m. a.
Beautiful walk and great views. Quieter than the main beach with a largish car park
G. B.
Lovely beach with decent size car park near by plus on street. Nice views from a top of the cliff. Mostly covered with round pebbles but also have lots of sand "patches".
Not bad in terms of cleanliness. Don't think there's any toilets thought.
B.
One of the most excited places I have been. Such a great walk to the beach and a fairly tranquil beach. The cliff surrounded like a curtain at the back. People respect to others so kept distance each other which was great in this COVID19. You would love to see the seaside of Poole when you walk. Be prepare for a bit of walking though.
M. K.
Our favorite walk. Over the top, via the beach, by the road over to the end of the peninsula. Great sandy beaches and a great place to grab food, a beer or a coffee in the cafe area. Good with dogs, kids or just a nice walk together.
Steep parking prices.
L. Z.
Beautiful beach with some great views. Had a really nice walk and would surely love to come back for a swim. If I had a dog, this would be a paradise for him! Good parking too!
J. J.
It’s a beautiful nature reserve. We love the quiet sandy beach. It’s less crowded than in Bournemouth.
G. W.
Ferry from Mudeford and a nice peaceful beach all you ourselves
J. P.
Beautiful beach with beautiful views. The trail is long with lots of scenery to take in. Could visit this place multiple times if you are a person who likes going on walks. If you're a dog person you should definitely bring your dog along
M. B.
I always love coming to hengistbury, and sometimes when Bournemouth and poole each are busy you can find your little haven hear as most tourist don’t know about hengistbury head as much as the city centres
H. C.
Big open space and not just offering many beautiful views and an ancient historical site. Popular for walk, jogging, picnic.
E. A. W.
Very sunny weather and not busy at all. You can do fishing, you can walk around or just relaxing on the beach.
i. h.
What a beautiful headland , great long beaches one side with very few walkers and a lovely spit of sand the other with charming beach huts and sandy little cove type areas between the rock groynes. You can take a lovely circular walk which is paved for wheelchair access. There is a cafe just by the end of the carpark and a visitor centre with some interesting finds and history.
J. P.
I loved this place. No cars or traffic and peaceful quiet beach walk. Not many people around either. We had plenty of fun beach combing and found all kinds of weird and wonderful things. The views all round are spectacular and you can see for miles. The visitor centre is well worth a look as well as there is a cafe and some beautiful art work.
M. R.
I travel down here 3 or 4 times a year it's a great walk with our without your dog. It is dog friendly all year round, & out of season parking is only £3 all day.
J. B.
Some lovely coastal walking either along the beach, over the headland or along the harbour. Those that aren't as mobile its possible to get the little land train there or/and back.
Can get crowded and parking is priced on the high side without card payment unless you download an app. That really needs improving.
L. U.
What can you say about Hengistbury Head beach? Sublime views of the coast stretching to the horizon, inland views of churches and quiet homes, and an absolute monster of a hill to sprint up if the mood so takes you. Blinding place for a sunset, to avoid blinding avoid looking directly into the sun. At Hengistbury Head, or anywhere for that matter. Even during an eclipse.
Tldr; beautiful views
N. L.
A gorgeous walk with wonderful views of the area, including the Isle of Wight and the Needles. There is a path to walk along the cliff and is a lovely walk. The beach itself is largely pebbles which makes it very tiring to walk along and can be difficult to keep your footing if you are not careful.
If you can push past that and walk for 15 mins or so to the Sandy area, it is absolutely worth it. Compared to Bournemouth or boscombe, where it is really crowded, here you will have a stretch of beach to yourself, sharing with the occasional dog walker
So to summarise it's an amazing place, really important to me and my partner, very romantic, to us at least it is so worth the walk to get to it
t. d.
Another great place for a walk with the family. There is parking which is a little expensive. There is a cafe, toilets and an awesome visitor centre which has the most charming garden at the rear. I love the pond! There are great views, beaches and walks here. Would definitely recommend a visit here.
K. W.
Lovely walk here. Can be a bit windy but the views are sublime!
P. C.
Lovely spot that's dog friendly and peaceful. Good for kids too
j. p.
Really nice place for slow or more intense walks, all necessary amenities are next to the car park. Been here countless times and it never gets boring.
g. e.
Favourite place to walk our dogs round the harbour then with over the head or round the beach back along to Southbourne.
i. l.
Hengistbury head has some nice views over Poole harbour, Mudeford, the colourful beach huts, & towards the Isle of Wight. Parking is quite expensive @ £2 hour including disabled parking. There are some free spaces along the approach road but these are limited to just 1 hour. It was extremely windy on the day we went. The lower Path up to the batch huts is flat & suitable for disabled access. In fact there is a Noddy train available to take you if required @ £2 each way. To get the views you need to walk up the steps so no good for wheelchairs. Although the views are great if you get up there. There are flat paths up the top but it is just the steps to get there are the problem for disabled access.
J. J.
Visited today..Very good place for a long walk and relaxation.A coffee shop with toilet are available nearby the car park.Sea shore with pebbles..
T. R.
Great place for walking, great views. Parking available- need to pay.
Paths lead to amazing beaches and to Mudeford spit .
M. S.
Quiet and perfect - beautiful little walk up the head and then round the beach back to the promenade.
j.
Love my twice year trip down. Dog loves it. Great cafe toilets. Stoney with a bit of sand depending where tide is .. love the views parking not too expensive for the time spent.. good fish and chip shops about
G. E.
One of our favourite places to visit and a great cafe there too
A. W.
Absolutely love the place! Car Park is not very far from the beach and the Cafe plus toilets.
The Car Park is a large..but fairly expensive (As they all are nowadays !)
Well worth a visit and Dog Friendly
Beach is very long and perfect for Dog Walking.
M.
Great beach, had a long walk and must say the view is stunning!
N. F.
Relatively quiet beach and nature reserve on the south coast, with facilities inc parking, food, and loos! Dog friendly (all year) too!
R. M.
True history with great walks of different difficulty ... and there’s always the land train to the rescue. Visitor centre is a welcome addition with the history of the area explained. Millionaire beach huts to scoff at and a great cafe in the middle of them all. It has a mini shop and takeaway bar if your just there for a mid walk top up. Ample space at the ‘pay display’ car park, that has its own cafe.
L. B.
Brilliant natural rock beach. You can enjoy lovely walk around the cliffs. People try to keep it clean.
K. B.
A fantastic place for walking and breathtaking views.
My other photos are in the Hengistbury Head description but this has the word beach added to it as to confuse people.
There are lots of ways to describe a place.
I tend to put it under just one title.
That way it’s more simpler for everyone.
How many titles can you add?
Hengistbury beach huts?
Hengistbury viewpoint?
Hengistbury coastal path? Etc?
j. h.
Beautiful place, lovely beach and really interesting cliffs, wildlife and so on. Stunning views to Mudeford
D. M. (.
a beautiful walk! The cafe/burger joint is open on the beach, it begs for a pit stop for the walk.
K. A.
Lovely walks pretty place nice cafe
K. O.
Great walk and an opportunity to get some fresh air - on a nice day
D.
Amazing views and superb walks around this great beach area
P.
Love this beach, still not busy during a spring time. Get busy in a summer
b. b.
Amazing place for a walk with or without dogs.
A. C.
Nice little walk or train ride to sandbanks. Made a change from getting the Mudeford ferry.
T. G.
Fabulous place for dog walking along the beach
E. R.
Lovely beach a mix of stone cobbles & sand. A brilliant walk all the way round the cliff and then to Mudeford end were you can pop in to the cafe or jump on the little ferry & visit Mudeford Quay. Or stroll back on a tarmac road way or catch the land train back to the hikers cafe at the car park
M. S.
Awesome, nature at it's finest, nice walks, signposted well, nice little cafe and clean toilets
K. B.
Absolutely one of the top spots to relax. Beautiful quiet beach with fine white sand. Lovely views. Clean and not crowded.
A. F.
Great cafe and visitor centre.lovely varied walks and views.
C. B.
Beautiful beach, mainly pebbles, not much sand but amazing views and rarely busy
W.
Lovely walk. Views amazing. Children loved and even paddled on a coldish day.
Have been before. Beach nice and not usually packed like some.
B. H.
Just beautiful! So calming and peaceful …
L. M.
Beautiful place for a visit and parking near the visitor centre allows a wonderful walk. Up the hill has a few steps but the lower route allows wheelchair access. Walking along also allows you to visit the beach huts. Taking a tripod and camera is a good idea as from the hill you get a great view.
J. R.
This place is quite simply unique. There's forest, shingle beach, a sandy beach, heather covered heath. From the top of Warren hill the views are incredible. You can see Christchurch Harbour beneath you, the Isle of wight, Bournemouth, Christchurch Priory. Many different paths and trails to explore
R. J.
Grat day out, walking the dog and bird watching
M. T.
Totally love this place always go when visiting my in law's. The children love it too. It's a very nice walk no matter what the weather is like but when the sun is out it can get really hot. What a beautiful place 😍
S.
very beautiful place
ideally for a walk with your dog or family members. Amazing views on sea side and sweet ice cream
L. G.
Love this place. Beautiful to walk your dog. Lovely long beach and a nice place to eat on beach too. Good Covid19 measures in place there. Walk back along woods or by the river with swans and yachts or back down the beach. Resturant and toilets at entrance. Good social distancing in place. Great ice cream and doggie ice cream too. Parking VERY expensive. But this is one of our favourite places to visit with our 4 legged boy.
S. G.
Great place for a walk. The beach can be busy at each end but quietens down in the middle. Restaurant and bar at the far end.
G. R.
Beautiful, colourful place! Nice Saturday trip
K. F.
Fantastic day out, even in cold winter sun! Happy child and tired puppy!
We'll definitely return as I now know there's plenty we didn't see or do.
r. m.
Love this place. Lovely scenery & many different walks around or over head plus beach & cafes with a land train.
t. s.
Love Hengistbury , great walks and views from the top
K. W.
Lovely beach, and cliff top walks, but can get very crowded, especially with dog walkers. It probably didn't help that we went on new year's Day. We have a reactive dog, so not the best environment (just be aware of lots of loose dogs if you've got the same problem).
Car park is reasonably priced - £2 for up to 2 hours and £3 for 24 hours. Be aware that they have introduced contactless/ card payments only for the ticket machines, so queues form very easily...
K. M.
Windy but stunning. Beautiful.
b. &. a. r.
love it you can walk across the tops of the cliffs and beach and theres also hikers and ice cream!🍦🍨
C. A.
Amazing beach which is almost empty! Friday afternoon and plenty of space to socially distance. Calm water and even toilet facilities a few hundred meters from the quiet area around the head.
D. L.
Fabulous place all year round. Can get busy, but you can still get the sense of being away from it all - still very much a natural setting. Great for walking, having a picnic, flying a kite. Dogs allowed all year round. Hiker cafe excellent for breakfasts, lunches, meals later on and ice-creams. Further along, nearer the Mudeford beach huts, there is a new set-up there, replacing the former cafe/restaurant, offering a bar, a burger shack, a pizza place and a drinks and snack kiosk. Choice of walks from the car park to Mudeford: along the beach, over the headland, along the road/track (where you can cycle), or along the harbour edge.
G. S.
We live over 100 miles away but it's one of my favourite walks. It's a shame we can't park the camper van near the Hikers café. But to be fair yesterday was so beautiful I not going to moan.
A. W.
Lovely place for walks with great views of Bournemouth beaches one way, the Isle of Wight the other and Christchurch quay. Parking is quite pricey but takes card payments
M. U.
Great place to walk, ride or run. Beach is stoney but fairly quiet so you can enjoy the views in relative peace. the shop was busy but the queue was moving efficiently.
Overall a good place to spend a few hours.
J. P.
Nice, relatively quiet area (of course here will also be some special people with their radio/phone speaker on full blast).
Walking can be difficult as it's a mostly gravel beach, with some areas having deep gravel. If you have flat feet like me, your heels will be killing you afterwards (didn't use hiking shoes, that may help).
P. F.
Beautiful place to walk dogs and to enjoy the coastline. Great coffee shop next to the car park. there used to be a land train but this now no longer exists.
R. H.
Stayed in a beach hut, great short break...
C. R.
Fantastic beach with enough facilities but largely unspoilt. Even on a busy weekend there is still space and you can relax. Also good walking on top of the head or along eastwards
A. B.
Beautiful place great walks
B. D.
Possible to find vaguely sandy areas, but very pebbly. Pretty quiet if you walk far enough. Ample parking, though expensive at £9 for 6 hours and only takes coins (5p & up), no pay by phone.
m. w.
Lovely place to walk the dog and appreciate the beautiful coast car park a little expensive.
J. M.
Lovely walk, great for dogs.
D. L.
Amazing place to visit😍💯🙂
U. B.
Beautiful place
A. &. K. (. S.
Stunning place. Park up at Highcliffe for breakfast at the Clifftop Cafe, walk along to Mudeford, catch the ferry to Hentingsbury Head, walk up to the visitor's centre which is highly informative on the unique history of the area and then walk back. Fitbit states about 26k steps.
L.
Had an amazing day, not too busy and the sea was so beautiful and clear. 50/50 sandy and pebbly!
T. R.
Very beautiful place to spend time with kids and family. Lovely beach
D. H.
This is a well kept secret beach in the Bournemouth area that generally only the locals know, or can be bothered to walk to.
It does not boast the perfect sandy beach that Bournemouth enjoys, but at the east corner there is plenty of sand, bathing areas, stunning scenery and a feeling of exclusivity.
The beach is accessible by walking, cycling or dotto train from Hengistbury head car park. It is also accessible by boat from the Christchurch Harbour side. If you don't have a private boat there is a ferry service from Mudeford during the summer.
There is a very nice restaurant called The Beach House and public toilets, but very little other amenities. Take your supplies and enjoy :)
R. G.
A lovely day out. Beautiful beach. We took the little ferry over to Mudeford and back and then the land train back to the car park. All good fun.
S. H.
It’s a beautiful place to visit. Nice and peaceful. Car park and a cafe available. Perfect for a long walk.
L. S.
It's beautiful. Only reason I didnt give it 5 was there were so many cyclists not looking out for walkers and going so fast
P. Z.
I love it. Please come to see it
T. N.
Great walk if you like a long walk, went for 2+ hours and very good
F. P.
A restful walk over the head returning along the pebble beach with a active sea running. The carved wooden bench at the top of the way to the Coastguard but is well worth a look.
M. R.
I has my daughters, grandkids ............
& Rick wrapped around me on a lovely day trip to Mudford Sandbanks. Could have been anywhere, quite honestly, & I wouldn't have cared, but it was a nice little spot.
And, we caught crabs! 💚

Lovely views, the beach was nice... Nothing much about. But I would recommend a visit and I would take the family.
A. J.
Nice beach if a bit stoney. Get here early to avoid the crowds during the summer months.
J. B.
What a place to go if you have dogs walk along and grab some food and drinks only thing car park is quite pricey.
G. S.
Sun, Sea, Sand and importantly, even on busy days, plenty of Space.
