Reviews of Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve
L. J.
Lovely nature reserve. Great place for kids to run around and for dog walking. You do have to pay for parking but that's understandable. It's 1.50 for 1 hour. 2.50 for up to 2 and then 5 for the full day which is fairly decent
D. A.
Beautiful Nature reserve leading to the beach. Ideal for walking / running / dog walking and more. Spotlessly clean.
Ample parking with clean toilets 🚻
R. O.
£5 to park all day, great for walking and getting away from the crowds. Walks are not for the feint hearted, quite an effort to get to the sea and takes about 30 mins.
A. P.
An accessible wilderness, never crowded, something different in every season. Incredible array of plants in the summer.
T. A.
Fantastic views and somewhere you can get lost in thought and appreciate together with wildlife all around
B. M.
A lovely place to wander and lose yourself for a few hours. Now becoming popular as a filming location, scenes for Plebs are currently being shot there.
M. J.
If you love sand dunes and a huge beach, this the place for you.
And you dog!!!
A. N.
A beautiful location. I went to find and photograph adders, however I was unsuccessful in my quest, still had a nice morning relaxing in the sun.
The car park is monitored by an ANPR system so you just pay your appropriate fee before you leave. Its £5 for the whole day so quite good value, otherwise its £2.50 for two hours. Enjoy.
P. F.
This is a great place to bring the kids and enjoy natural beauty. It is shame people do not pick up their litter and remove waste from bonfires. It takes some time to walk to the beach and back so you need to remember to pay enough for parking. Has a public toilet.
R.
Beautiful area, stunning scenery. Long beach and estuary
Pay to park ANP
A. H.
Beautiful walk to the beach, killer on your legs on the way back. But lovely peaceful place. People need to remember to take their rubbish home with them. Enjoy these places don’t ruin them!
B. S.
This is a fantastic place for a day out, take a picnic and enjoy the massive sand dunes
S. M.
Absolutely beautiful sand dunes! Great place to explore lots of different environments in one place. Big beach area. Car park is dirt under trees, but spacious with toilets.
M. R.
Extramally love this place kids was so happy perfect time for me and my partner to see ours children smiles❤️👌😍
E. B.
Great place to go and explore. Lots of different pathes to take to walk over and around the dunes. Good 30 min walk to the beach from the main dune carpark. This walk is worth it as even on busy day the beach is so big it seems quiet.
J. H.
Great coffee, cheap parking, stunning walk and sandy beach. Just take cash for coffee and parking, and, no toilet facilities so go before you head out!
M. W.
We've been back twice and finding new routes and adventures everytime. Try and visit, well worth it, it's a really nice walk to the beach too and what a huge beach it is. We have walked around to Trecco Bay which is really nice. £4 a day to park so take some coins.. Enjoy your experience. Dog friendly! #teamwebb
J. B.
Fantastic for dog walking. Loads of paths through the dunes. Great car parking facilities and toilets on site. Occasionally even an ice cream van. Great for all kinds of outdoor activities as well. Well worth a visit
N. T.
A lovely area, the sand dunes are wonderful. Plenty of wildlife present on our visit, we observed several common lizards as well as a deer. Worth a visit 100%! Parking was ample, however I imagine during peak season you may need to leave early to secure a spot.
The only downside was the beach(various points you can access it but the main access) had a lot of litter, not the fault of the area but people who frequent it 😔
N. Y.
Spectacular place with great walks and views. The sand dunes are amazing fun and offer incredible views across the valley out to sea. Plenty of parking available on site and only £3 to park for the whole day. Would recommend bringing a picnic and walking to the top of the reserve for some breathtaking views, especially of the sunsets over the sea and sand.
M. B.
Amazing place in the summer. I use it for some of the toughest training you'll get. Walk to the beach is about an hour an a half and nice. Lovely place for the dogs (No bins though through the dunes which is stupid)
A. A.
A lovely walk up and down, with great scenery
S. S. H.
This is a place to find a peaceful picnic. Long walk over sand dunes to lovely beach. No toilets at beach but at the car park.
L. G.
Beautiful beach and relatively quiet, wales' largest sandune to tackle. Very reasonable £3 to park for the day a good 40min walk to main beach beautiful countryside on the walk. Clearly defined walking options. Loo facilities at parking area only. No shops or crowds. Sadly collected bagful of plastic on our way back from beach hence 4 stars.
L. J.
From the car it's a pleasant 30 minutes walk to the Beach, but well worth walk with stunning scenery & a beautiful Beach
G. C.
Really cool vast expanse of sand dunes, amazing to walk around with lovely views of the sea. Dog loved walking around the dunes
K. D. A. K.
We spent the afternoon here at the top of the dune and had a picnic. Absolutely amazing 👏 paid parking.
m. l.
Amazing place to visit, huge huuuuuge sand dunes and if you are up for a long walk you can take them down to the sea, parking is reasonable in cost which gives you enough time to explore, as always with these beautiful places they are spoilt by the rubbish and dog waste that gets left behind, please make sure you do not add to this.
f. p.
A stunningly beautiful part of Wales. Stretches the legs with the walk across sand dunes. Pretty hilly but worth it for the beach. Loved it.
P. B.
One of the most beatiful places in Wales. The dunes are so peaceful with just the sound of birds and the sea in the distance. Once you get to the beach you can walk a fair distance without seeing many people, it very rarely gets busy. Good footwear is really handy if you to climb some of the bigger dunes
J. F.
Stunning landscape and lovely walk to the beach
D. H.
Says it all in the description, be prepared to walk up some big dunes
J. H.
Beautiful place for walking.
R. F.
A fabulous little walk, plenty to see, but unfortunately 😕 people have dumped rubbish in this beautiful area.
M. K. D.
Brilliant for dogs . Exhausting for humans . Fab place.
Pay for parking now takes cards which is perfect
O. D.
Sand, sea, rivers, nature. Has everything
g. t.
Hard work but worth the views!
V. D.
Absolute beauty! Scary country lanes on and out but SO WORTH IT!
H. D.
Beautiful walks, definitely recommended with a picnic for a great day out as no ice cream vans or snack bar available for refreshments
T. P.
Fabulous, next time we visit we will allow more time and make the beach
M. I.
Awesome beach once you get through the sand dunes, it took us the best part of an hour to get through the dunes from the car park, but we had a real slow 4 Yr old with us, I reckhghon its probably 30 minutes at a decent pace. Beach is huge when tide is out. Car Park was £5 for the day and can pay on card at the machines.
D. C.
Lovely sandy walk through the trees and the dunes. Was too hot at that time but was a great day.
I. V.
There's a long walk before you get to the beach. All lovely.
A.
Really nice wildlife with amazing views.
D.
Whether you arrive from Newton Burrows, Wig Fach or Methyr Mawr, this coastal area has a wild beauty and captivating nature.
More verdant than you would expect, it undulates with eroded deep sandy slopes and clumps of grass, thickets and stands of stuby trees.
Normally quiet it does not get the volume of people as other sites like Kenfig, however it feels like an area of peace overlooked by the busy Ogmore coast. The river inbetween ensures a natural transition from here to there, especially at the mouth of the river, by the Merthyr Mawr beach.
J. L.
Lovely beach, quieter than the other side of the stream at Ogmore-by-Sea, and very dog friendly.
A. O.
Beautiful bit of wilderness to get away from it all, just half an hour from Cardiff.
S. S.
Lovely scenery and very peaceful, but zero guidance through the reserve (no sign-posted trails). Visitors are left to their own devices and we ended up wandering rather aimlessly through the dunes until we finally managed to get to the sea. This could be done much better!
m. j.
I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's great to kill a mooring with the children or have a slow walk to the sea. Don't expect to have a fun time sledging if the sand is damp. If was a workout today pulling the kids up and down lol
M.
Really good place for a nice walk. Beautiful views and great for a dog.
v. j.
Beautiful place..
D. F.
Great place 👍 about 1hour walk to beach . toilets were locked unfortunately and small van charging £1.50 per can 😢
T. J.
Gorgeous place to take my pups for a mad run!
S. L.
Lovely place
K. W.
We love this place. Huge sand dunes. And walk to massive empty beach. The walk is over a mile and can be hard work dragging the kids. Don't get lost. Beach is lovely. Toilets in car parks. Pay for all day parking. We hardly saw anyone midweek during the summer holidays.
J. G.
Super dog walk country. A real treat.
G. W.
Lovely place - lots of paths
R.
Beautiful place. Well looked after by natural resources. Lucky to have on our doorstep.
S. M.
Fab place, great place to wonder.
S. W.
Wonderful day out for family and the dog! Parking cost £3 for the whole day so we brought a picnic and aimed to walk to the beach. But the dunes and the castle were more than enough entertainment. We found the beach was less appealing than running up and down the dunes with the dog. Great day, beautiful place to visit. Short walks are more tiring than anticipated because of the steep climbs up the dunes but its a great adventure. Bring water for yourself and your dog if needs be as its thirsty work the climbing about.
T. W.
Fantastic walks for all the family especially for the four legged members. You can take various routes of varying levels of difficulty down to Merthyr Mawr beach. I have been walking here for 25 years and still thoroughly enjoy it. It's just a shame that some inconsiderate, selfish people think it is okay to leave their rubbish on the dunes/beach.
H. E.
Clean natural beautiful location. Pleasant walk through the dunes.
M. M.
Brilliant time ,kids loved it .great place for the dog
M. M.
Beautiful place
M. W. B.
Brilliant place for kids and adults to enjoy some well needed freedom. A big enough place that you hardly see another soul even when it is busy l
M. B.
Extraordinary excursion. Landscape is amazing.
G. M.
If you like walking this is the place for you. It's a good few miles if you want to make it to the beach. Not for the faint hearted
M. F.
Quite a long walk to the beach, lovely when you get there. Well worth it : )
G. H.
Great place for a walk. Scenery, wildlife and a lovely beach. Follow the arrows as it's easy to get lost if you wander off path
B. J.
Beautiful place to visit. Lovely walk through dunes to get onto the beach which is never to busy, just sit and enjoy, or go for a swim.
D. H.
Lovely walk with variety of terrains. Doesn't get too busy on the beach as a lot of people don't like the effort of walking over the dunes
R. W.
Beautiful place! Love going there.
Shame about dog walkers picking up their dog mess and throwing it in the bushes... Those of them who can be bothered to pick it up, anyway.
But don't let that put you off.
G. P.
Beautiful place, great for long walks and dog walking.
L. M.
A hidden gem! Absolutely love this place. An amazing walk through sand dunes and arrive at a beach which at times feel like a private beach as most people can't be bothered with the walk and just go to ogmore on sea and play on some rocks. We have been multiple times... Once on the hottest day on the year 2021 and there was under 20 people on the beach!
S. T.
Lovely and peaceful, could spend hours exploring the dunes. The beach was also beautiful!
S. R.
Beautiful, top tip for young kids, take a sled, kids love it and leaves a trail back to the car park
C. D.
Peaceful, beautiful, great atmosphere, lots of space and great for walking. Absolutely love this place
B.
beautiful! a long walk through to get to the beach, but beautiful scenery, make sure to have signal on your mobile to pay for parking as no coins accepted, anpr in operation
n. b.
Great place for a walk or fun in the sand with the children and dog
T. N.
Spent many hours here in my younger days, great walk to the very quiet beach
T. B.
Wonderful place.we were walking the coastal path.
C. E.
What a stunning place 😍 I've lived in Bridgend area all my life and only now I'm finding this place. Be going here more often 👌
s. t.
Beautiful stretch of land, one of my favourite places to take a walk
B. b. &. l.
A place of tranquility and natural beauty been going here for over 40 years brilliant place to take some time out .
Justin Haines
Brickright 👍
A.
The dunes themselves are impressive, and nice to walk through/over. However it is a bit of a dog walkers paradise so can be a bit of a poo minefield at the start. Lovely walk to the beach, which is very wild. Bring a carrier bag and do some beach rubbish clearing to earn brownie points with yourself. Parking is £3 for day. We did route to the beach and back 3.5 miles.
j. b.
I never knew this was the biggest one in Europe
S. S.
Absolutely stunning place
V. p.
Lovely quiet area with a fantastic hidden castle in the vines off the dunes. Lovely yellow sand ready for summer body boarding down
m. r.
Brilliant place to explore.
I. L.
Nice and clean, did friendly, walks pref winter months purely because it's so peaceful and quite.can get busy in summer.
C. N.
Beautiful beach plenty of exploring. Quite a trek for little people to the actual sea, but well worth it! Toilets in the car park which was a fiver. Lovely day out 😊
W. J.
Thatched cottages on the drive in are so picturesque. Lovely peaceful place but arrows pointing to the correct path would be useful as we took the wrong one!
M. G.
Amazing dunes among heathland. Lovely walking and leads to a beautiful, empty beach
D. M.
I've always loved going there, is great for kids and to get away from busier places around the coast, lovely walks and great views
E.
Always enjoy coming here, you can walk the dunes or visit the old castle ruins that are next to the car park!
C. S.
Lovely place, will be back when more sunny, 100% worth to see while you make your way to the sea
M. A.
Love it here - some of the biggest dunes in Europe. But also lovely forest walks, lots of wildlife and wildflowers to spot and, when you finally get there, a huge wide open sandy beach.
N. P.
Beautiful place and great for the kids. Parking pricey at £5 for more than 2 hours
r. S.
Lovely place to spend with children, ours enjoyed sliding down the dunes on their body board. Lots of hills as to be expected so not suitable for buggies or very small children. Lots of shade with trees.
U.
Wonderful area for a quiet barefoot walk on the Sands and grass areas over the dunes to the sea!!
中.
Like Yokodake, Yatsugatake Mt. in Japan, there were nice sceneries with greens and holes of badgers, I suppose, we were able to walk from the parking to the coast in 25min, hilly places let me pump up. Also the coast view was truely vast and unforgettable.
C. L.
Great place to go, it's a trek though the dunes, easier my river, beach stunning
D. W.
Great fun exploring the dunes. It's about a mile to the sea
M. B.
Great place to visit, always different routes to follow. Clean and dog friendly place.
j. s.
Lovely place to visit for a good walk beautiful surroundings beach and countryside
R. D.
Beautiful place, and a really interesting habitat but spoiled by significant amounts of dog mess, mostly bagged, and left on pathways or hung in trees. We must have seen several hundred bags in the few hours we spent there. Its a shame as otherwise its lovely!
A.
Gorgeous. Long stretch of sand at low tide with few people. Delightful countryside with easy walking
J. A.
An amazing place to get lost in! Just keep walking and you'll eventually get to the sea 😁
A. P.
Lovely dunes. A walk to the beach is not easy due to the sand paths and high dunes. Could do with with better path markers. Car park not free but ticket machine takes cards. Number plate recognition as you drive in.
W. S.
Amazing sand dunes.
R. E.
So peaceful, beautiful natural place and idyllic definitely worth a visit or three.
a. d.
Beautiful dunes, would normally be 5 stars. But we were devastated to see so much litter left as we entered the beach. I have never seen it like this before. Have people come out of lockdown and decided they don't care 😞
D. L.
Beautiful area for a relaxing walk.
c. r.
This place has so much to offer, great day out with the family 😎
S. C.
Good walk
L. M.
Nice countryside and fauna. Good place to chill and unwind.
K. R.
Always an amazing walk though the dunes. The parking is now card only £5 for all day. Great place for bbqs and beach games on the front sand area the end result after the dunes is always a great view and plenty of space compared to ogmore beach. Always recommended.
G. J.
Beautiful place to visit
A. C.
Great place for a walk and fun with sledges on the dunes
S. M.
Great fun to visit if the weather is nice!
N. Y.
Really good for a walk and have fun with the kids here .

H. T.
Great walks and fun for the kids and adults. Can be a little difficult underfoot when climbing on the sand dunes.
P. R.
Beautiful walk through the dunes followed by a quick dip in the sea!
s. a.
Beautiful place to go walking
S. M.
Simply stunning location, great walks and lots of wildlife.
B. J.
Its still very tiring to go up and down the sandunes. Good fun with the Grand children though.
m. h.
Great walk with family and dog. Don't underestimate the trek to the beach and don't take a buggy or pram etc
M. J.
Lovely place. So big you can always feel you've got the place to yourself.
M. N.
I liked this distinct invigorating environment: grass covered sand dunes, many quite high.
Very windy while we visited, sand got in our eyes. Shame about the rubbish left by a few thoughtless people. Great beaches beyond the dunes.
K. B.
Great fun long walk to the sea but worth it
j. b.
Great to have in your doorstep, feel like you're a million miles away.
E.
Lovely place BUT shame people don take there RUBBISH home with them instead of scattering it all over the place
m. r.
Lovely place.
C.
Beautiful scenery, nice day out. Highly recommended
A. G.
Lovely place to walk your dogs, ride your horses as there's specific horse trails. Only be aware you now have to pay to park 😠
W. E.
Awesome walkes and scenery, cant understand why you have to pay for Parking
S. P.
Beautiful walk from the big dipper down to the beach. 4 mile circular. Hidden gem
S. S.
Brilliant place for very energetic kids.
D. T.
Absolutely beautiful gem of a place. Found by chance when scanning the Welsh coast on Google maps for somewhere to go and we will definitely be returning
r. o.
Lovely place to walk the dogs.
C. M.
Love this place take the dogs there every weekend, good walk's and scenery.
J. P.
Great beach and interesting rare plants in the dunes
A. M.
The walk is quite technical over rough ground and deep soft sand but the views and scenery are fantastic.
S. B.
Lovely walk and you are rewarded with a beautiful beach at the end of it
C. H.
Brilliant cheap day out for half term we always take the sledge to go down the dunes my daughter can't get enough of this place
M. R.
Wow, what a place. The dunes were just amazing. Car park very good value
R. D.
Largest sand dunes in Europe so I believe. You can roam for hours here and not meet anyone.
R. B.
Fabulous location for walking. The "Big Dipper" tests your stamina. Parking fees reasonable. Public toilets are open.
S. (.
Nice walk and amazing views!

S. M.
Such a booootiful place. I seen a thing and it was alright
N. “. S.
Good for a quick walk with the fam or a day out! The parking is good and facilities avaible too. Nice scenic area and dog friendly to boot. There are horses occationally... so beware of horses...
T. E.
Co located with Candleston Castle, £3 (coin only) all day. Really warm when it's sunny, no breeze in the dunes. Beautiful place to visit, well worth a trip. Bring everthing you need with you.
Z. T.
Good if your up for a half hour walk to have the pleasure of a quieter beach on a hot day near to Cardiff!! Plus the dunes are quiet beautiful in their own right! I would say tides can be a but hairy so would be careful swimming out too far and be wary of riptides!!
E. B.
Great place for walking, dog and horse friendly.
P. J.
Loved this place from childhood, gosh those sandunes are hard to climb these days 🙄
M. W.
Awesome beach and dunes.
M. W.
Amazing dunes, like being on another world
S. A.
Great for dog 🐕 walking, but can be tiring on the legs walking up and down sand dunes to the beach.
p. b.
What a great place!!! Where childhood dreams are made
h. s.
Great when the sun is out for a nice day out
P. K.
Very good experience recommended but beware of weather and dress according but very nice will try and visit again
A. P.
That's really a nice place provided with a quite big car park and public toilets. See side is about 20mins walking thru the wonderful sand dunes. Only flaw is the too many dog's excrement spread all around which dog's owners are probably not that happy to pick up.
s. m.
Nice walks
Beautiful views
M. R.
It's a beautiful place. Run pudding race. Highly recommend it.
N. H.
Difficult to park, on a busy day it is very hard to get in and out. Time wasted, pick a quiet day
S. 9.
Lush place, kids and dogs loved it!
H. E.
Nature is awesome. Well worth a visit
D. P.
Rain and more rain
D. E.
Lovely on a sunny day, very busy
C. H.
Like a massive sandpit. These dunes were formed from wind-blown sand off the Bristol Channel and flood events in the channel in the 1100s and circa 1610. They were deposited over limestone outcrops and allegedly a settlement shown on one really old map as Treganllaw.
The Burrows (so named for all the rabbits) contain a load of Archaeology - some of it (barely) visible - and apparently the highest dune in Europe. I don’t know if that’s true but I know from experience that it certainly FEELS really high when you try to run up it.
There are miles and miles of dune to walk through, run through and lurk in.
T. E.
Good fun clinking up and running or surfing down
E. B.
Beautiful walk from Candleston car park through the sand dunes to the beach, perfect for dogs (just watch out for the horses)
The beach is wide and sandy, perfect for a dip!
A. M.
Great fun for everyone of all ages
J. A.
Ample parking on site, loads to see and do in the area exploring all the dunes. Lots of pathways sign posted for both folk on foot and horse riders alike. However, be aware that 'normal' sledges used on snow may not be ideal for the sand dunes.
S.
Awesome place to walk your dog
P. D.
A wonderful unique nature reserve
D. N.
A great way for adults and children let off steam. Take a sledge and slide down the sand dunes..such fun
J. R.
30 minute walk to the beach. Not the easiest walk. But not too difficult
R. G.
Lovely and quite, great scenery.
L. R.
Lovely place, will definitely go again
D. D.

Great place for a family day out
r. m.
Absolutely beautiful place
m. k.
A lovely walk for the dogs
c. /.
Great walks lovely place
G. S.
Great place to go for a walk. There's a maze of paths through the undergrowth leading towards some of the larger dunes which the kids love and give spectacular views... if you've got the legs! I'd recommend arriving early as the car park can become overrun during busy periods. Its pay & display (card only) with different amounts depending on how long you want to stay... I think 2 hours was £3. During busy times the journey in and out of the stunning Merthyr Mawr village can be challenging if youve got a large vehicle due to the often single lane roads so just be ready to squeeze past others or pull up often into passing points.
M. W.
Huge sand dunes - fun to climb up and run down!
J. J.
Really very pleasant, great views and great sand. Leo loves the rock pools.
J. N.
A beautiful country park. The car park can get very crowded on busy days and is around £3 per day for parking. The sand dunes are beautiful. It's heavy walking but enjoyable. To get to the beach from the car park is approximately 1.5 miles and is reasonably tiresome, especially with small children or heavy bags. Be sure to take plenty of water and good with you. There is a small van in the car park that sells drinks and snacks but nothing more.
It's a good area to visit with dogs as they can explore the dunes freely and Merthyr Mawr beach is dog friendly all year round.
The walks are really not suitable for pushchairs, walking or mobility aids or wheelchairs. The sand is too soft and it's very hilly.
C.
Bring a bottle of water, beautiful walk but can be tiring if it's a hot day

The tops of the sand dunes are a lovely walk, the view of the sea and Tusker rock are beautiful, the biggest sand dune is a lot of fun to run/walk up, but very steep and difficult. We'll worth it for the fantastic views from the top! The car park at the bottom has toilets and is also cash only so make sure to bring some before you set off.

A lovely place for dog walkers and hikers. It takes about 30 minutes to get from the car park to the beach.
There is no shade so make sure you are well prepared if you go in hot weather.
Make sure you have £1 coins for the car park. It's £1 for 1 hour, £2 for 2 hours or £3 all day. The machine doesn't take notes or cards. I didn't have any on me but decided to risk it as I thought they wouldnt have patrols out during the Xmas holidays. I ended up with a £60 fine.

(Translated) Amazing that you can find dunes of those dimensions in such a place. It looks like an Oasis. Now if you expect the beach to be a paradise .. you are wrong. It is not bad and it is sandy but it is not how you imagine it as you go through the dunes.
