Reviews of National Trust - Grange Barn

Amazing to see a barn so old still standing.
K. H.
House is just delightful. Very knowledgeable guides lovely to meet spinners who could explain the craft. Loved how woollen cloth was used to print the history on, made it very poignant. Garden was a delight and the visit to the Barn completed the trip. Walking through a delightfull little town of quaint historical buildings. Meeting the local wildfowl on the river.
P. B.
Amazing medieval barn, built in the mid-1200's, making it one of the oldest standing timber-framed buildings in Europe. It was restored in the 1980's, and now looks incredible. The interior is large, and contains a few small displays on agriculture, Coggeshall Abbey (to which this barn belonged) and the barn itself. Car park is spacious, toilets on site and tickets also allow you to visit the nearby Paycocke's house, an early Tudor timber-framed merchants house near the main road. Well worth a visit!

Fantastic rustical barn for your big day. Very spacious with lots of outside space for garden games. Totally recommend for all bride and grooms who look that kind of place! Defnitelly want to take there photos again!

First time visit with the family, ample parking and a large seating area for outdoor picnics. For us personally we were in there for about 2 mins as there wasn't much so we walked to paycockes house. With the size of the barn I feel there could be more interesting things in there to see and explore.
A. J.
Interesting and nice looking old barn. Not much to see inside to be honest, but the volunteer was very knowledgeable and we had a nice ice cream in the sun! 🙂 Worth combining with a walk around the village and a visit to the other NT place round the corner.
S. M.
Beautiful Barn and plenty of parking I attended an event and it was great fun.

Local Barn Tour 2022! Whoop whoop. Been meaning to get in here for years, always seemed to be closed when we visited Coggeshall.
Excited to find it open on Sunday, not only that, hosting a Mediaeval Event. Great free event. My son had a thousand questions and got to try on some chainmail.
The actual barn is pleasant enough, big and high with two big doors. National Trust take good care of it, and there are videos to watch about its renovation.
Cressing Temple Barns - done.
Grange Barn - done.

It's just 10 min walk from Paycocke's house & Gardens in coggeshall, if you are in coggeshall to see the vintage house of a cloth merchant from 16th century, spare few mins for this national trust owned coggeshall Grange barn... built in 13th century, has a collection of farm equipment and tools from the medieval times , there is a parking facility at the site... whole site can be viewed in 15-30 mins unless you are interested to know the history of each itme on display... haven't seen any toilet facility though...
B. L. W.
Great venue for anyone looking for a barn wedding venue in the area. Lovely rural setting, great staff and good food. Highly recommended!
K. F.
It's a long time since we've been here. Craft day on on this occasion fantastic history connecting with our past if able physically well worth combining a visit to Paycockes
S.
A very impressive barn both inside and out. The renovation work was outstanding. Would return on a warm day and do the walk. Paycockes is a short walk and the village is very picturesque.
S. J.
Went to a craft fair it's a lovely building toilets on site as well able to get a drink if wanting one also selling book there a wide variety
H. V.
Interesting old barn with a lot of information about its history. It is great to see the Paycocke's House which is not far and there is much more to see.
D.
Well... it's a big barn! Lots of history and a nice walk around the area.
J. B.
An impressively beautiful example of a restored tithe barn, set in a wildflower meadow on a hillside near the remains of a Cistercian Abbey above the town of Coggeshall, Essex. Entirely wooden framed and tiled. Hosted by a team of National Trust volunteers who also welcomed us to Paycockes. Worth visiting both sites on your tour, however consider booking ahead as popular.
J. D.
It's a mahoosive ancient barn that costs £7 to look around..... (does include access to Paycokes House and garden too though). Not much more to say really
L. S.
An amazing looking barn for its age. So much history, we also enjoyed the small farm machinery museum on site. Toilets were clean. Plenty of parking, take a picnic or join it up with another national trust place nearby, which is also within walking distance if able too
C. L.
The story of how barn rescued is worth going for on it's own. Quite unique.
T. B.
An interesting place for a short visit if you're an NT member. The limited no. of displays are a fascinating insight into local life. The barn is an impressive structure with its large indoor space. Not sure I'd invest the entrance fee in a visit if I was a non-member though.
H. L. A.
Unfortunately we got there too late to go inside but the outside was impressive.
A. H.
This is reputedly the oldest timber framed building in Europe. The National Trust does everything so well. The barn has been beautifully restored and its internal proportions are cathedral-like. Large car park where you can leave your car while you walk to nearby Paycocke's House and explore the picturesque town of Coggeshall.
B. T.
Fascinating medieval monastic barn, rescued from destruction and now a magnificent survivor.
A. C.
Interesting 800 year old barn saved from destruction. Information inside on the project and some farm machinery. In a small building on the site there is very interesting display of wood carving tools and furniture by a well known carpenter called Saunders.
B. S.
A truly magnificent, and huge, very old barn.
The display of agricultural implements and carts is most interesting. There is also a display of the wood carvers art in the grounds. Parking is available.
C. H.
Good job you can visit Paycockes as well otherwise it would be 1 star. The barn is beautifully presented but that is all that is there. I visited on a craft day and there just is not enough going on to keep your interest. Paycockes House is not far but with limited mobility a little too far to walk between the 2. Much better information in the house given by enthusiast volunteers. Quaint garden.Cafe tiny and range of food available strictly limited and a bit overpriced.
Worth a look but once is enough. Personally I prefer the multiple medieval barns at Cressing temple which are much more impressive and cheaper to visit plus they have a Wilkin and sons tearoom serving excellent food and drinks.
G. R.
This is a big old barn, so for those of you not interested in timber structures, monastic history or old farm machinery this will be a quick wow and move on.
Still worth it though as it is dramatic and has easy parking only 5 minutes walk from the NT house.
J.
The barn is skippable (unless you're really into old barns), but it has clean bathrooms and there is really nice, well-documented walk that starts and ends here. If you Google "coggeshall grange barn walk" (without the quotes) the National Trust website with details will be the first result. The barn also sells honey from bees right outside. Perhaps the most interesting color of honey I've ever seen.
A. 5.
I found this very interesting. Lovely barn and the gentleman there was very informative about its history. Parking is good and you can have a walk around this historic village
P. C.
An example of a 13th century barn built for Coggeshall Abbey. Interesting place to visit with a few exhibits of farm machinery and history of the building. Large car park and picnic area. Park here if visiting Paycockes House and garden which is a short walk away.
S. T. T.
Lovely barn. Very large open area inside. Not alot to see, but worthwhile combining with a visit to Paycockes. I understand the barn can be hired for weddings where it would make a great venue.
S. M.
Massive 13th Century Wood Structure
This is the oldest all-wood barn in the UK, if not Europe. Formerly part of Coggeshall Abbey's grain storage buildings, the barn is one of the few remaining Medieval structures in the country, constructed solely from wood. It is home to a detailed exhibition charting its eight hundred year history, and it's actually kind of hard to describe its cavernous nature when you're standing inside.
Given Coggeshall's other ancient buildings and sights, this place is definitely worth taking an hour over.
Pro-Tip: Coggeshall is a medieval village, so it's quite narrow, with limited parking opportunities. Grange Barn's grounds provide an excellent place to leave your car while you explore the village
K. B.
Was closed on the day we visited due to low volunteer rates, but they had left a large window open so we could see inside. It would be nice if there were some informational signs on the outside, but it wasn't too far from Paycocke's so it wasn't like our day out was ruined.
T. W. L. C. L.
What a structure and so well preserved thanks to many
O. M.
Nice rebuilt and well kept barn. Great to stop off at for a coffee. A bit pricey if your not a national trust member though.
R.
Beautiful, quaint market town with a lot of listed buildings.
D. H.
Another National Trust gem. Largest barn in Europe. Very old and loads of interesting info from guides. Car park adjacent. Locared2in interesting village with lots to see.
R. U.
Worth a visit for members but a bit (really!) expensive if you just walk in. Despite the historical significance there is about 30 mins required to see the venue. All staff nice and friendly as well as knowledgable.
R. A.
An historical timber framed bar.
B. S.
Decent venue for a wedding or other party. Easy parking. High ceilings and plenty of space for a band and dancing. Not much to see truth be told from a historical pov
D. B.
Wonderful building. So interesting how the barn was saved and seeing the craftsmanship that went into restoring the oldest surviving barn in europe.
J. B.
Pleasant short stop. Not that much to see compared to most national trust properties. There are toilets but otherwise limited facilities. Small shop but no cafe.
L.
Great place to visit if you want a casual day out to visit something historic. Good parking, included a short tour and there is lots of information about the place.
P. B.
Very interesting and warmly hosted by the local volunteer who explained the history of the barn
M. K.
To be honest, there isn't much to see in the barn. But if you combine it with a visit to Paycocke's & a walk round Coggeshall it is an enjoyable afternoon out.
T. T.
This tithe barn is stunning inside and out and huge. Good display of the how the joints were made for wooden buildings.
P. A.
National trust members so went for a visit. Not much to see but an interesting barn and interesting to read about the restoration.
T. D.
Like all national trust properties ... I love them, it’s always great to see our heritage and history preserved for us and future generations

Maybe I am missing something - but it's a barn in a field! I understand that it is very old and these things should be preserved but I just didn't get it!
D. P.
Impressive but didny pay to go in, went to cressing temple instead. Much better site with more context and surprisingly free
K. B.
A very nice barn with some interesting artefacts on show. Not a place for s full half day though.

An historical visit, very well presented
D. C.
Barn interesting. Definitely a good day out when combined with Paycocke's House and gardens.
O. J. (.
Great barn. The Merrie Folk were in residence as well as an art show.
D. S.
This is conjoined with Paycocks House another brilliant place to go, limited parking at the barn only, walk down to the house.
D. M.
Lovely structure if a touch cool and drafty saw a coggeshall drama group show.
J. M.
Lovely barn not a great deal to see but nice to visit.

(Translated) Oldest, and one of the largest, all-wood granary in Europe. Built in the thirteenth century by Cistercian monks. At the time, this barn belonged to their monastery, which has since disappeared. Completely restored in the 80s. Restoration process nicely documented with photos and film. Very impressive.
(Original)
Zeer indrukwekkend.
