Reviews of Coventry Canal Basin
B.
My visit to Coventry was fun, however I had little time to do all I planned on doing as it was just a day trip.
I visited the Machine memoir space and it was worth my time.
I also visited Coventry cathedral, the and cathedral ruins. It was magnificent.
Lastly I had a cup of chocolate at the L’amour cafe.
There’s so much to do here and I will plan another visit.
J. R.
Beautiful and relaxing place, visited on a sunny day with my daughter to grab a cold drink and sit by the water, there's a lovely looking cafe, a Lithuanian shop and a Portuguese shop which is interesting, definitely coming back soon for lunch 😊
C. M.
Close to town centre with all its history.
Really like Coventry.
Motor museum is a must.
Basin is a nice place to tie up for a few days.
We'll be back.
H. B.
A lovely historical site. Well maintained, lovely cafe. You can moor for 10 days.
K. J.
Small cafe situated on the coventry canal basin. We have visited twice now and both times the food and service has been excellent. Lovely atmosphere. Outside seating and tables inside. Do a wide range of snacks and an amazing Sunday lunch very reasonable prices. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
c. f.
Visited the canal cafe 'Playwrights' only which was very nice. Sat outside in the sunshine. The area looked very inviting.
A. R.
Scenic views with a bit of history and a nice walk. Recommended.
C. W.
We moored up our narrow boat overnight and found it to be very quiet. Supermarkets within walking distance and two polish convenience stores on the quayside. Had a lovely breakfast at the cafe. At the time of our visit, nothing else was going on in the canal basin, but I understand events are held there.
B. P.
Food really excellent no faults whatsoever. Staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. For Gluten Free Food also really top marks. Finally price and cleanliness 💯 per cent.
R. S.
A bit of a hidden gem in Coventry. Often forgotten about or joked about at the expense of an out of date view, however, the Canal Basin is becoming revitalised and is fast becoming a great place to relax and enjoy time away from the house. Currently has cafes, food shops, salons, museums and clubs in its facilities. Worth a visit even if just to enjoy the tranquility next to the canal.
m. f.
Its completely a free place. Although I walked towards the Canal, I found there is a place for car parking. But I'm not sure whether it is paid or free. But the Canal basin is quite windy. Yet you will find a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the beautiful place. Just take a stroll on the walkway and you will reach tge other side of the canal. There is a Portuguese grocery store and a restaurant. But the food is bit pricey for me atleast. Overall you can come to this place for a short walk.
A. B.
Just outside Coventry center. Cafe and local shop in basin. Surprisingly quiet.
R. M.
This place is a lovely little gem. We travelled by boat. Not the best bit of the canal. It needs a clean. So much rubbish
The basin is lovely. I was expecting it to be busy. But it's not. 7 day free mooring on boat too with spaces for atlest 10 boats. There was 4 on this godiva weekend trip.
There's two lovely cafés to visit and a European shop. Lots of treats to try and very good value. Then even have a hair dressers
For the boat there's Toilet facilities eslan and water. No waste disposal which is disappointing. And a lovely peace garden. We met so many lovely people here. Open event 25th Sept 22
A. I.
went here as we had time to spend in coventry. There wasnt much to do but just walk alongside the canal.
The weather was quite cloudy and windy, hence it may have been a much better experience if it was in the summer or on a hot day
S. L. -. B.
Myself and my fiancé love walking along the coventry canal and its always so beautiful! We always see our regular little buddies, ducks and their ducklings and also swans and their cygnets and we hear a rooster as we walk past too.
Such a lovely stroll in peace and quiet.
s.
Shops are fantastic but the location and surroundings not so much due to the amount of housing situated by the canal where the smells of weed made me a bit sick . Overall I won't go again but it's actually not me as I don't drive a canal boat
g. s. r.
relaxing place, visited on a sunny day with my daughter to grab a cold drink and sit by the water, there's a lovely looking cafe, a Lithuanian shop and a Portuguese shop which is interesting
K. K.
Lovely little place for a short walk and views of swan's on the canal at the right time of day
n. s.
A quiet place located near the city centre of Coventry. The place is very picturesque and quite different from the other city. Identically to those who want to have a walk to the canal. Unfortunately, the place neither has any coffee shops or pubs that you can sit and relax or any activities.
S. S.
Very pretty and clean. Good walking route with coffee shops and a garden along the way.
D. S.
I've visited the basin several times by boat and have moored overnight with no problems. The area had loads of money thrown at it about 20years ago but it's starting to look a bit jaded since the boat hire base pulled out.
Many of the craft/shop units are vacant which is a shame as it wouldn't take much to rejuvenate the place.
If you are a non boater it's still worth a visit just to see the architecture and experience the tranquility that the waterways can bring. It's quite a novelty to go down about 10 steps to reach street level ie the canal is higher than the street.
I. C.
Walking along the canal is relaxing.
Some people fish there
Some walk with a dog.
Some just walk as doing exercise.
V. A.
Just how lovely - no insult meant but you wouldn't know it's Coventry (city centre)! Beautiful, historic buildings at the basin, but the five stars go to the boat trip on the canal. Don't expect a huge amount to see, but enjoy the peace and quiet, the wildlife, a nice meal at one of the pubs along the journey and chill..
N. V.
Nice place to sit and watch the birds. Just take some time to relax.
M. G.
I have no other canal basins to compare this place to.... yet. Went on my first narrow boat holiday from here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only problem is the location - there is nowhere good to moor within a 2 mile stretch of this place so having to be back for 9am meant we ended up spending our final night back here.
W. D.
Lovely historic basin beautiful buildings just a shame its hidden from tourism and access is not brilliant. Wish better organised events were put on to showcase such an important piece of our history.
S. G.
Historic place. My great grandparents worked as shippers moving coal and other stuff up and down the canal network. Life today is so easy to when my nan used to tell me stories.
M. M. 4.
The canal basin is a really relaxing place. A peaceful little nook just outside of the city centre with a live music venue, a funky hairdressers, cafe, shops.... It's not used enough. People need to go there
T. C.
Lovely canal basin. Felt very safe on overnight visit in narrowboat. Recycling bins would have made it 5 star.
N. T.
We liked it, quiet brilliant Lithuanian general store close to the fabulous Motor and Coventry Music museums. Great spot.
D. G.
A few cafes in the vicinity, highly recommend going to Playwrights. Lovely to walk along the canal. Gorgeous old buildings.
J. W.
Lovely place to visit only just outside the city centre. Was very peaceful at night to walk along the canal towpath.
M. H.
Great city centre location quite and plenty of mooring space.
Short walk to the bars, restaurants and shops..
S. C.
Nice enough if you particularly want to go to Coventry. Otherwise I wouldn't bother. The canal up to the basin isn't very nice.
K. M. N.
Attended Canal Basin Floating Market on 26th June. Nice small market. Fine place
K. C.
Very pretty and some great independent venues, I particularly like Playwrights.
N. T.
A lovely underused place with a Latvian food store, Portugese shop, hairdressers and cafe. Narrowboats are usually there and lots of activities throughout the year.
W. E.
My working place is on site in the canal basin and from our offices windows we have greats views on the canal which is so nice and amasing with all the ducks and the boats in it. Really love the place, very nice for visiting also.
J. J.
A lovely part of Coventry, its almost like a different world to the hustle bustle of the city. There are ducks along the river and other various shops. We went to a bar called the tin. It was very nice but the drinks prices were pretty extortionate.
r. d.
The Canel Basin is a good relaxed place to visit for Anyone who is interested in Arts and crafts
M. R.
Nice part of the canal, pretty buildings, but could do with a bar and a restaurant.
J. E.
Not enough is made of this hidden gem. Playwrights is an amazing little cafe and the Portuguese shop is fantastic! So welcoming and with great food. The Tin could be an amazing venue for music but is really difficult to even get in touch with. This place could be so much more!
Ö. Ç.
Nice view nice Canal
C. T.
Not a lot going on by the time we got there at 5.15pm. Lovely to walk round the basin.
K.
Knowledgeable canal guide gave us interesting info and maps. Rental Bikes nearby so you can cycle along. Canal is quiet (October) and peaceful some rubbish on route and locals passing by but would be lovely in summer.
P. J.
Lovely quiet part of the city to unwind
J. J.
The end of the Coventry canal. Typical canalside architecture, new cafe, shops and gallery, not buzzing but a pleasant atmosphere. We came by boat, the basin was full but we could tie up just a few minutes walk away. Worth a visit if you're in a canal boat and need services, or from the town if you like the canal thing.
The trip from here to the junction with the North Oxford canal is a delightful green corridor.
G. F.
Beautiful part of Coventry...it's a shame it's not a very popular tourist attraction.
K. Y.
Good place for a walk, but you will find canals like this one in other UK cities.
S. B.
Lovely place for a walk but parking often tricky.
L. P.
Visited the Portuguese cafe...fab food and friendly owners, will definitely be back!
J. W.
Very interesting place. Bit of a thoroughfare, so not isolated. The history is explained and there's a statue of canal engineer James Brindley. Useful shop and good cafe.
A. B.
When I went to Polytechnic here (Coventry), nearly 40 years ago, I used to walk past here every day. Then it was run down and graffiti-coated. Different story now! There's a really nice cafe here, and it's a bit of a calm just outside Coventry's Ring Road!
A. B.
Very relaxing brilliant walk along tow path
C. N.
Lovely peaceful canal basin. Tidy and clean, ducks and Canada geese here too.
J. N.
A very interesting place to visit, with lots of shops at the canal basin.
J. A. B. D. S.
Lovely (quiet) Canal... really close to Coventry City centre...
H. W.
Love this place. Easy access to the city centre with a range of interesting small shops.
A. P.
Great little hidden gem with a lovely canal side restaurant that allow pets. The perfect place to take dogs.
L. L. L.
I love having my break and a snack here. I t is close to the site I work
T. B.
It's lovely place and there is a restaurant around.
A. S.
Nice place but some part of the area have got some rubbish on the floor
R. A. G.
Former industrial heart of Coventry's proud canal history. A quiet oasis seconds from the city centre situated immediately off the infamous Ring Road.
m. n.
Beautiful and inspiring place for short walk or long trip ...;-)
J. K.
Lovely family atmosphere friendly staff fresh food
D. T.
This is a fairly peaceful spot to sit and watch the boats manoeuvring or to start a walk along the tow path. There is a brilliant Latvian shop here with lots of goodies at decent prices too. The parking here is only up to 2 hours, and there is a pedestrian bridge giving access to the city centre.
R. C.
Well taken care, nice relaxing place with a bit of history. Deserves a visit.
D. S.
Lovely place we had a lovely lunch too.
M. A.
I would definitely recommend having a walk along the canal on a sunny day😊 The view is gorgeous, the scenery pleases the eye. A refreshing experience
D. R.
Lovely peaceful place .
S. K.
Great place just to see some bwauty of water almost jn the heart of city. Small boats, water activities or just nice to enjoy the weather and views
D. M.
Nice place to visit. Enjoyed the Pirates of The Canal Basin there in Coventry city of culture. Needs more events. Information boards needed to tell canal people of places to visit in Coventry.
S. T.
Very peaceful and tranquil.
A. B.
Great collection of cafés and shops including Gorety Mini Market and cafè
C. M.
For the narrowboater this is a nice spot with around 10 moorings. Although only a short walk to the city centre this means boaters need to be aware of who is around the area. Helpfully the basin is well lit at night. CCTV in some areas. Portuguese and Latvian shops are interesting, and open from 9:30am, but don't expect to be able to fill up on your usual groceries there.
Y. R.
Not as clean as it used too be and one of the boats was selling tacky toys for kids!!!
C. H.
So much scope to be more than it is... occasional events are not well advertised and attendance is usually quite low... a shame for a location with so much potential.
K. B.
A great place to start a walk up the canal. There are some shops in the Basin and great café where you can get a drink or something to eat.
K. W.
Interesting place to visit. Never been to a Canal basin before. We will hire a boat next time.
M. L.
Nice little shops, could be more places to moor
H. M. K.
Lovely place. There are one cafe & general shop nearby. If the weather is good then we can have some good coffee or drink and sit near by the canal & enjoy the view..
n. S.
Really nice place to go for food and drink in peace and quiet reasonabley priced to x
J. L.
Coventry City of Culture 2021 and the Canal Basin welcomed Random String, a biannual art and technology event produced by Ludic Rooms and their curated artists. It was a delight to the eyes, ears, heart and mind.
Making use of the canals reflective waters to bring to life some of the pieces was very clever. It was an immersive experience with some of the installations enhanced by audio recordings that completed the artwork.
Definitely something to look out for when it comes around again.
G. R.
Visited Playwrights today. Its in a really nice setting but so much more could be done in the area to make it more attractive. Some big planters with bright flowers would make it very attractive. There are hairdressers and shops there. A lovely Portuguese shop selling cakes, frozen foods, wine and more to come from this little place apparently. There are numerous buildings but you can't tell what is in them because there are no visible signs along the walkway and the glass used in the shop windows makes it difficult to see in. The area could do with some nice little boutique shops, art and craft shops, wine bar type of attraction etc. The shops also need signs that stick out at right angles so people can see whats there so that it grabs peoples attention. Come on Coventry, City of Culture spend some money down there.
I. G.
Handy to Central Coventry with secure mooring. A nice place to stop.
M. K.
Really nice place and beautiful view. Calm, quiet scenery and lovely. We do story board based on this place.
S. J.
Lovely, nice break from everything and a nice chill out.
J. S.
Even in the rain there were things to do. Goretty is a great Portuguese shop where you can pick up meals, very nice deserts etc. Playwrights serve lovely meals in a cosy and warm cafe. There are creative activities happening on Friday afternoons. You can just chill out at the weekend markets and festivals. The Tin is a good bar to drink at in the evening.
J. U.
excellent place, a Lithuanian shop, a Portuguese cafe, we met Germans and Russians there also
G. S.
Shadow of its former self
M. K.
Beautiful and very peaceful had a lovely breakfast in the cafe next to the canal.
K. H.
Very interesting for a short visit if you are in the locality
s. s.
Lovely place to walk around and take pictures. A coffee shop and Latvian food store is at the location.
J. K.
It's nice here and there are some shops for you to get ice cream and whatnot but I'd recommend you walk along the canal and loop back from the bridge to get any real enjoyment out of this place.
Nice place to light a cigarette at night though, the lights dance in the water.
H. T. T.
Was quiet when we went (probably due to Coronavirus) but we walked along the canal to get here so it made for a lovely walk. Nice place but none of the shop units were open while we were here. Worth a look though. Doesn't feel like you are right near the town centre to be honest.👍🤪
R. K.
Would be good if grass cutted around walkways. Too many rats hiding there...
H. M.
Went a few weeks ago great place lovely food. I think if you take children you need a close eye on them as it is by the water. I am going again soon
K. S.
Stunning, clean, relaxing place. Great place for drawing or yoga.
E.
calm residential area. people litter on the floor, which is sad
D. C.
Great time at the Canal Basin, attending an event in a voluntary capacity. Playwrights ( cafe/ restaurant) were doing well serving people with coffee and food. It's one of the places to go to at the Canal Basin.
r.
This feels like a secret location. Easy access to the town and it's many facilities including the most wonderful transport museum. This weekend there is a floating fair with chutneys, crafts and a narrow boat pub. The laundry,if you are on a boat, is just over the lovely curving bridge outside the basin. This is a place of history; visit the beautiful cathedral and watch the Lady Godiva clock, on the hour!
S. F.
Great place to go to really nice cafe there too
T. W.
Haven of calm close to city centre. Excellent cafe and a delicatessant
M. B.
Nice place for a walk ☺
P. L.
Nice little Portuguese shop/cafe
G.
Very confusing signs about where to moor and, at the time of writing, the CRT rubbish door was locked with a different padlock resulting in us having to put our rubbish in the public bins. Toilets and Elsan were available. Some convenience stores and the café were open. 10 minute walk to the centre. Very quiet at night.
R. D.
Lovely view from different angles. The place is spiced with special historical chill out feeling of medivial trading, shipping and tollkeeping on canals across the country. In front of the building there is a footbridge leading to city centre over the highroad.
B. S.
Some nice shops and events the Russian shop there offers a lot of variety for such a small store
Y. O.
I love this small oasis in a concrete jungle city. A great spot to relax and unwind in this peaceful canal marina.there are a few shops of a special interest. For me it's the refurbishment of the old canal side warehouses, the peace and quiet, the breath of fresh air.easily accessible plenty of outdoor seating.time limited on the street parking large car park close by. One thing surprised me was one of the canal side shops is in fact a Latvian super market, selling all things Latvian.the model railway club occupies the top floor of a warehouse with several large scale model layouts.bringing back many fond memories of the age of steam
D.
Nice scenic place to visit. Peaceful place to sit down. Has a small cafe as well.
P. K.
Good mooring, quiet, but we did expect it to be bigger. One of the arms is reserved for the local boat company and there is no mooring allowed along the ‘wharf’. We were here at end of April and it was us and one other boat. Expect it to be busy in summer months. Easy access to shops and bars using the bridge over the ring road.
K. C.
A beautiful starting location for a stroll through Coventry's industrial heritage. Stop for food and drink at Playwrights, maybe a little shopping at the Portuguese supermarket and even a hair cut!
B. S.
This was an interesting place to visit but I thought there would be more barges selling goods. It was well worth the visit though and not to busy as we travelled there on a Sunday morning.
c. h.
Went to play writes for a lovely lunch , very relaxing .
A. M.
It's a shame the potential of this place has not been developed. I visited on a Sunday with a friend, hoping to get a coffee or an ice cream, or browse craft shops, but nothing was open so we went elsewhere. He was going to return with his narrow boat, but decided against it as it was so quiet and urban.
F. R.
Beautiful canal with walkways on the banks and a bridge connecting them. There are swans and ducks in the canal which adds to the pleasing view.
V. I.
It's a great space but so under used. Needs to be more vibrant to encourage people to cross over the ring road when visiting the city centre.
I. L.
I visited Latvian shop ,Rudens,. Good selection of food and drinks. No car park on site but can find one near by.
A. F. C.
A smashing rest spot after walking the canals
N.
Lovely little place. Canal & River Trust and trustees of The Tin arts place have regenerated the basin. Today we saw a float market with traders selling their wares from their boats. There's a lovely little deli here too which sells gorgeous black icecream!
D. B.
Nice place to visit but could do more with it. Toilets and some nice cafe. Good floating market. Good social distancing in place and Covid friendly
C. A.
Really great place with much investment into keeping it litter free. Just need everyone to remember to take their litter home or use the bins provided.
S. D. (.
A lovely little turning point at the end of the Coventry canal. There are a few businesses, but it's not the most touristy place you would expect on a canal basin. Good weather enhances the place and the experience as it can be a dull miserable place when it's raining. I strongly recommend avoiding the public toilet there as the doors were broken and the place was littered with drugs paraphernalia.
F. X.
Good for long walks
S. H.
It's a shame this place doesn't get more visitors. It's very pretty with a few shops and a cafe.
A very nice Portuguese food shop there which is well worth a visit
S. D.
Lovely place to go for a walk
H. J.
Not much in the way of attractions but walking down the canal is always enjoyable and a nice peaceful walk! Just be careful of the odd bit of trash. Otherwise a nice walk.
J. M.
One of the best pubs in the area! Great beer on tap often have amazing events such as the summer beer festival with live music and a really great Filipino menu (western food available too)
N. C. (.
Very quiet for most of the time, though do get tourists or students heading into town walking past.
N. G.
Never been here before , we cruised from Tamworth to the Basin ( narrowboat ) awesome views , nice little spot to moor , very quiet and peaceful.
B. C.
Decent place to moor at the end of an otherwise uninspiring bit of canal. Mooring seems to be 7 day contrary to some other indications. The no mooring signs on the north side seem to be widely ignored, so there is space for about 9 narrowboats. Reasonably close to town centre.
M. H. B.
Hard venue to fish but there are some nice perch and zander.
J. S.
Great Sunday walk place
S. B. t. B.
Great place to moor. Easy walk into the city.
G. P.
Really lovely venue, great place for small acts from theatre to poetry to bands of all styles. Photo attached if of a student acoustic band called ‘Dougie and the Boners’ who were brilliant, and didn’t need to be plugged in the room was good enough for them to sing and play unplugged which was great.
The bar is pretty cheap and well stock with local Coventry bottled ales which is nice. The location is lovely down on the canal front which is super nice on a warm summers eve.
C. C.
It's a lovely place but needs to attract more business. There's a great little tea shop, trophy shop, hairdressers and a Latvian corner shop and the Coventry Telegraph offices. If only there was more!
C. R.
A pleasant walk with my friends little dog canal boats a few swans and a shop and a small cafeteria.
D. B.
In a lovely part of Coventry.
Easy to get to the main shopping area via the footbridge and there are plenty of attractions and places to eat nearby.
At night it gets noisy sometimes.
A. B.
It was a wonderful view and a nice walk, we went there for the Baltic shop that was incredible! There are a fair few shops there too so it's worth a look if you want something to do on a mild day.
M. M.
One of the historic and overwhelming tourist attractions in Coventry after the transport Museum I would say, also looks like an exotic sight seeing place as a Canal Basin. As Coventry University is spreading across the city there are even student accommodations now being built near this canal basin. Students would feel more excited living near this canal basin probably!
K. F.
Floating market was lovely to walk around and area was clean. Very picturesque and should be utilised more.
M. H.
Very pleasant afternoon out.
S. H.
Nice to look at, but impractical for boaters as there's very limited mooring. Don't plan on being able to stop in the basin itself. Coventry itself is a bit down at heel, but good in parts
R. H.
Very nice and quiet
G. J.
Could have done with a few more barges and a variety of merchandise. I appreciate it is the first one though, maybe more advertising needed to retailers and have some stalls.
T. M.
We performed here Sikh style Martial Arts was an amazing place and a more than perfect Day !!!!!
l. s.
Great for winding, turning the boat, stopped for a lovely sandwich lunch at the cafe on the canal side, perfect
E. O.
Loved the Pirates of the Canal Basin show by the EGO performance group, amazing!!!
J. K.
Nice, quiet and calming place even though it's in the city centre along the busy road. Good for a walk, take kids to see the boats.
K. B.
Pretty chilled out part of town. Fed the ducks, had a nice walk. Saw some canal boats. I only wish I had discovered this place earlier 🙂
A. Y.
Just a casual stroll around, most things closed as it was late Sunday afternoon, but a lovely location
J. F.
Not much to do here, but it's one of the nicer spots in Coventry to go on a walk to and watch the canal boats. Don't expect much tho. Be careful, recently found a body in the canal, but I'm sure it's a one off thing...
f. s.
A hidden treasure in heart of Coventry not celebrated to its full potential ....a beautiful place .
M. G.
Nice little area by the canal couple of places to grab a drink. Seen afew gigs up their as well
I. F.
A good place to jog, walk, and ride your bike. Beautiful view of the canal, the downside is there is not enough chair to sit and rest
A.
A historic place and a good destination for a family vacation. You can rent a boat and enjoy a historic route of canal transport connecting Coventry and other place.
H. P.

A very nice and cosy place in the Coventry City Centre where you can enjoy some food, fishing and local history. Occasionally, you can spot swans too!
U. u.
Nice place to visit there is a cafe open during the day where you can sit in or out to enjoy the view sometimes good fun watching inexperienced boat pilots turning round to head out out of the basin. There is a small convieince store, fishing tackle shop, hairdressers and in the ware house's there are two clubs that opertate Coventry model railway club meet Tuesday and Thursday 7pm-10pm and a canoe club not sure when they are there. There are a number of small business opertate in the basement of the warehouse and also at this time Coventry telegraph also have offices at the basin. A note on the moorings there is limited space within the basin area but there are further morrings just past the old overbridge.
R. S.
