Reviews of Dunfermline Abbey and Palace

This Abbey was surely a highlight on our Road Trip through the UK. Firstly the architecture and secondly the history: Robert The Bruce is laid to rest here!
Dunfermline’s story stretches back to the 11th century – the time of Malcolm III and his queen, Margaret. Their son, David I, raised the status of the little priory to abbey in the 12th century.
It started as a priory back in 1070. The Romanesque pillars are surely a sight to behold. The whole abbey is such an impressive masterpiece.
The Abbey Nave is managed by the Historic Environment Scotland, while the abbey itself is not in care of the HES and is free to enter.
And be sure to enter the abbey: Robert I was interred before the high altar in 1329. His heart was taken on crusade before eventually being buried at Melrose Abbey. If you're interested even the slightest in (scottish) history, then Robert The Bruce's resting place is an absolute must-do.
A fantastic visit, we've spent a lot more time than planned. Surely worth it. Highly recommended. And make sure to check out the lovely parklands as well - just across the street.

Spectacular to visit. Historical sight. Lovely views. Friendly staff. Currently free so make a donation! The historic Scotland guides are brilliant for £2.50. And you get to pay your respects to the grave of Robert The Bruce.

Dunfermline was the birth place of King Charles the 1st, between the Abbey and the palace there's lots of interesting history. They're well worth the visit. And you can go from there to Dunfermline Carnegie museum, Abbot's House or the Glen which are all joining.

Amazing history with beautiful grounds, quite underated it seems.

The palace has only 2 rooms open just now which means you miss out on see nearly all of it. But the abbey is open. When you walk through the door it will blow your mind. The stained glass windows are stunning. There's paintings on the ceiling. I would probably wait till it's all open so you can see it all at same time. I know I will be back to see it when it fully reopens.

Not an easy place to access for parking we unfortunately visited on a rainy day, so perhaps it would have been enjoyable if not raining, but the rain and difficulty finding parking made this feel like a waste of a trip to visit.

Visited today (20 May 2022)which is a historical day for Dunfermline i.e. it became a city since 19 May 2022. The abby is great, a bury/ birth place for many Scottish statesmen and nobles. The structure is grand! Will visit it again!

Sad to see this tourist attraction closed. It’s so beautiful down here, especially on a sunny day!

The remains of the historic Dunfermline Palace, once home to the Kings and Queens of Scotland from Malcolm III, when the town was one of the major settlements in Scotland. Following the 1603 Union of Crowns it was seldom visited by the monarchy and fell into disrepair. Now maintained as a scheduled monument by Historic Scotland.
If you have an interest in Scottish Monarchs it's worth a visit
