Reviews of National Trust - Crook Hall Gardens
D. T.
I was staying in Durham and whist there I could not miss paying a visit here.
It is my first visit and one I will no doubt return back to at different times of the year. The gardens are beautiful... lots of different areas/rooms with plenty to see in each including a walled garden, a maze, orchard, pools with many seating areas to admire the views.
It is a little gem of a place and well worth a visit.
E. K.
Free parking for national trust members. Cafe with delicious cafe , snacks, cakes, Friendly staff.
Beautiful views from garden to the Durham cathedral.
Lots of fruits, vegetables and plant's to show kids. Lovely paths with colourful plants, trees and shrubs, few small fountains😁
Definitely worth the money!!

13th of July 2022. The day when National Trust opened the Garden for public and Durham appeared on National Trust map! This medieval building added another reason to visit Durham.
At the moment the house itself is still closed but you can visit the medieval hall. Not much but still quite interesting building.
To me the garden is a real pearl! There is a couple of sections of this lovely garden. We have orchard full of apple trees, pond surrounded by trees, water plants and beautiful views of meadows and fields. Section with vegetables, berries and edibles is really well kept and impressive! Fantastic features everywhere not omitting this part of the garden.
Small and bigger ornaments and statues are keeping you in "look for" mode. Great abundance of plants everywhere so no room for any single weed! Lovely planned paths with all shapes of benches here and there gives additional reason to stroll and soak in atmosphere and calmness of the place.
The cathedral view is not something extraordinary but still nice as the best place for it is designed as kind of rock plants carpet. I love it!
Coffee and cake available in the spotless café and fantastic staff members ready to help is a cherry on top!

Lovely, but not perfect. Crook Hall Gardens is a delightful little place in the heart of Durham. As picturesque as Durham can be it's nice that you can escape the city to this little Alice of countryside. The grounds, while small have lots of little hidden corners and paths that make exploring a delight.
It's still early in the process of being under the management of the National Trust and you can tell. It's in need of a little tlc in places, after neglect as a wedding venue, the gardens are not as spectacular as other National Trust sites I have visited recently.
While there we was also visited the onsite cafe. We ordered a flat white, 7up, a chocolate brownie and a fruit scone. The fruit scone and brownie were lovely, full of flavour and perfectly baked.
The only downside was the service from the staff. The venue wasn't particularly busy, but the staff member serving me seemed as though they couldn't be bothered. This is very unusual for a National Trust cafe, I have always had fantastic interaction with staff, so this was highly disappointing.
I am hopeful that it will improve in the future, at which point I look forward to giving it 5 stars.
A note on accessibility. The terrain would make it difficult for anyone in a wheelchair to enjoy the premises. The paths are small and a mixture of gravel, grass and stepping stones. You are also required to climb a set of stairs to get up into the garden.
S.
Beautiful gardens. Costs about £8.00 entry but this is worth it because the gardens must take a massive amount of maintenance. You could go every day for a week and still not see it all. National trust seem to be doing a great job.

This place is a real gem. It is only a small visit but it is well worth it. The gardens are lovely, with real variety, we liked the walled garden and the sleeping giant. The Hall is interesting and shows how they were expanded over time from hall to house. Good knowledgeable staff too. Well worth finding, 5 minutes from the centre of Durham.
C. B.
Beautiful gardens and interesting medieval hall (it's just the hall that you can visit not the rest of the house) . Recently taken over by the national trust. The cafe is very nice - sandwiches, cake, snacks, tea, coffee etc. No hot food yet but is planned for future.
C. R.
A lovely place to visit. The gardens are beautiful with flowers, trees and shrubs. Interesting old medieval hall. It has a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating.
T. H.
Beautiful grounds and gardens. Friendly people. Awesome hard working gardners. The gardens are just changing seasons so a lot of hard work preparing for the next blooms.
N. G.
Just the gardens open, but the hedge maze proved a hit with my 8 year old, and the domino's that were on one of the garden tables was fun to play with. Toilet facilities in the cafe which serves hot & cold drinks, snacks and cakes.
S. H.
Some beautiful gardens with lots of little nooks and crannies. Some produce for sale, the potatoes were very tasty. And a nice cafe. No hot food though
d. n.
Beautiful gardens with plenty to do. Lovely tea and cake. Cheese scones were amazing.
D. B. C.
Lovely day out here, very well looked after gardens, lots for kids to do. Only criticism is that it's a bit pricey if you're not a member. Also parking down on the road next to the car park is far cheaper than the one on the grounds.
T. S.
Crook Hall has recently been purchased by the National Trust. It is a small site, however the gardens are set to improve year on year now the NT volunteers are on the case. The maze is amusing. The different styles of gardens within the garden are quite stunning. The views to Durham Cathedral need a bit of pruning to fully appreciate the splendour of the Cathedral from a distance.
The medieval Hall has a vibe of its own. The Hall is quite eerie. A sense of its age really came across when visited. The cafe on site is quite small, but offers a range of snacks. The scones need a bit of work if they are to be placed on my top 10. It was an hour and a half of time well spent.
It will be a pleasure watching this gem of a place improve. All credit to the previous owners who set the template for the gardens.
S. F.
This place is deceptive. Looks tiny and not worth paying to get in, but it is huge considering it's in the middle of a city. Lovely place, really well kept. Lovely cafe too
K. R. J.
Really pleased to see this little gem in our city in the hands of National Trust. The gardens are well worth the visit. It's lovely to have so many seating areas to appreciate the vistas on offer in the various 'rooms' of the garden. Also lovely to see a garden that caters for all ages with a great and well resourced little play area. The mediaeval hall was small but fabulous and constituted a great pinnacle on the ascent from the entrance.
The new cafe at the entrance serves lovely food. The only downside was that the old cafe behind the old hall was closed. Hoping NT develop this in some shape, form or fashion.
D. N.
First visitor to the newly opened National Trust gardens and will be a regular visitor
C. M.
Great place with lovely gardens and a lovely little café. Lovely things for children to play with and explore.
J. L.
So happy the NT has cared for this. Coffee cafe a sun trap. Gardens beautiful. Right on my door step too
H. D.
The staff are lovely (including resident cat) and the gardens are nice to tour. I particularly like going into the old hall and seeing the inside. The cafe isn't particularly good, the tea being quite poor and the cakes are ho-hum. There's plenty of parking and it's a nice place to walk around.
D. Y.
After visiting this hidden gem we were disappointed to see that The National Trust have decided to modernise this beautiful historical family home. We visited a number of years ago and had afternoon tea overlooking gardens and the beautiful views across Durham. The house was then occupied by the family and showed amazing history in every room.
Unfortunately by removing this local treasure we feel it has lost it's sparkle. The gardens are still beautiful but feel as though in this instance The National Trust have got it wrong!
P. C.
A re-visit since NT recently took over Crook Hall. Gardens currently feel a little neglected but I'm sure they will improve.
E. N.
Lovely gardens, as beautiful as I remember. Just a shame they aren't opening the hall to the public too as that was my favourite part of the place, especially with the afternoon tea they used to do there. Such a shame they're contemplating turning it into accommodation, making it inaccessible to so many who are unable to afford to stay over.
G. M.
A recent acquisition of NT, this is a little gem. The gardens had been in need of a lot of work, having been allowed to get very overgrown prior to the NT purchasing it, but the gardeners have done wonders in the short time they've been working. The site is compact but full of interest, and I look forward to visiting again.
D. W.
Small hall just outside Durham City center (very walkable from the center), pleasant small gardens, with a tea shop. Shame that one can't really see much of the inside of the hall, maybe this might change? Can easily spend an hour here, but would advise becoming members of the NT. Possibly expensive to get in otherwise for what is there at the moment
J. S.
Pretty gardens. A lot packed into a small space
E. C.
Lovely gardens. Easy walking, even using a walking stick. We loved meeting Elvis in the kitchen garden. Coffee and cake to end the day. Will certainly return.
L. C.
Absolutely stunning hidden gem in the heart of Durham. City, well worth a visit.
A. T.
Wonderful place.
The building and gardens alone are beautiful.
We had the absolute pleasure recently of having our wedding here. The venue was fantastic, the staff were equally brilliant, nothing was too much for them. They made a brilliant day run smoothly and added to an already brilliant day.
l.
It is an amazing place. Well worth visiting. Staff and volunteers are really friendly. Can't wait to come back next year..
J. B.
Real surprise: wasn't expecting such a gem so close to the city. Great views from the gardens. Tearoom is good too. Little of the building presently open.
P. S.
What a hidden gem - A new addition to the National Trust to which they are working hard to restore the beautiful gardens which are in need of some TLC but still well worth a visit - really looking forward to seeing it again in the spring/summer when its in full bloom.
A. M.
It's OK with our free tickets and if you want peace and quiet as childless couple for the day, but £8 for and adult and £6 for a child is a bit steep when a family goes for a maze. I understand there is upkeep involved in the garden but I went with 2 kids 6 and 7 and they were bored
J. G.
Delightful place the gardens were small themed and all followed into one another. Weddings are held there and i can see why because there are so many places for photo shoots. We were here in feb but there were still many plants flowering . The white and silver garden was full of snowdrops. I really liked that every part of the gardens had benches or seats so you could sit and enjoy the plants. The resident cat came round with us. The teashop is worth a visit even when the gardens are closed. Reasonably priced we had tea and cake but they also do breakfasts and lunches and lightbites. Would love to come back later in the year for a different take on the garden.
G. Β.
We bought a yearly family pass so no entry fees... car park on a Sunday is £1.40 all day so great place to visit. On a sunny day like today was great walking around... so so many different gardens with so great variety of flowers bushes and tress. I'm not into gardening but it's lovely to see how a space is transformed with hard work. 2 coffee shops to enjoy tea and cakes and also light bites. Definitely worth visiting if you are around that area. Every so often there are themes that you can enjoy and take part, the first time we went there were fairytail stories and treasure hunts etc, this time just had an art exhibition. Great place to visit and enjoy with your family.
s. I.
Gorgeous Georgian, Victorian house... beautiful tea rooms serving patisserie , sandwiches and hot food.
Garden stunning to walk round (lots to see) including a maze. Peaceful place.
One I frequently visit...a must see.
£8 per adult but no curfew.
Parking is £2 for 2 hours but £1.40 all day on sundays.
Great place and also wedding venue.
J. T.
Crook Hall and Gardens allows you to see beautiful and relaxing views. The whole place is gorgeous but they do charge you to access the gardens, it’s up to you if the price is worth it.
If you enjoy nature and like to visit places for a relaxation session, Crook Hall and Gardens is definetly a place you would like to check out.
The access to the gardens is through the Cafe, if google doesn’t point there then it hasn’t been updated. Otherwise you will find yourself between private houses and a helpful resident will point you towards the real path.
M. W.
Exquisite historic building with fantastic gardens. We are getting married there this month. It will be the most beautiful experience ever. The house has a working kitchen and you can have afternoon tea here with is exceptional. They also have a cafe which is open 7 days a week to the public too. Highly recommended.
A. T.
Beautiful old house and gardens in Durham City. A lot larger than I expected, easily fills 2 or 3 hours. 2 good coffee shops...the cake and coffee sampled were both spot on! Friendly staff. Overall well worth a visit and definitely worth the admission.
P. D.
A field of play equipment for the kids, the usual cafe facilities and a series of beautiful walled gardens climbing the hillside. A thoroughly enjoyable visit
s. l.
Visited for the first time and it was a beautiful hot sunny day! The gardens seem to go on for miles, full of flowers in bloom, statues, picnic benches, chairs tables fabulous for a family day out.

Celebrated our 47th wedding anniversary here with an afternoon tea. We arrived a couple of hours early so that we could have a wander around the gardens and a visit in the 13th century manor house, a merger of several periods reflecting the changes through time. We weren't disappointed. We begun in the garden with the maze, a delightful, fun start. What a varied mix of delightful gardens hidden at each turn. (Can be steep in places but several tranquil stopping places with benches or even a swing seat. There are covered gazebos and a small lake). After looking around the hall taking in the different atmospheres each room had to offer (sadly we didn't feel the presence of the ghost) we were shown to the Georgian drawing room where we were served our pre-ordered selection. He chose the ploughman's platter version while I had the traditional. We were served canopes of warm caramelised onion quiche and sticky honey mustard glazed cocktail sausages served with either a selection of beer/ale or Elderflower Fizz for him or Prosecco or the Elderflower Fizz for me with a green leaf salad topped with a well washed freshly cut nasturtium flower head from the gardens. We then had a choice of endless coffee or tea. We didnt have long to wait before our tea arrived with the ploughman's platter consisting of a roll of beef, mini pork pie, 1/2 Scotch egg, crackers, cheese, rustic sliced bread and butter and a pot of chutney. The traditional was a sandwich selection of triangles of brown and white sliced bread containing salmon, cheese + pickle, ham and cucumber. The middle plate was a freshly baked melt in the mouth scone, strawberry preserve and cream (not clotted) in individual glass pots. Top plate had full sized Millionaire Shortbread and full sized chocolate brownie and a selection of 5 mini fresh cream cakes. Again well presented. Our waitress was a young lady named Chloe who was polite and pleasant who brought in a surprise of a slate which had been piped with "congratulations on your 47th wedding anniversary" and adorned with two pieces of flapjack. A lovely touch.

Beautiful gardens and hall with interesting history just on the edge of durham city. Good views of the cathedral. Very restful experience. Nice cafe with fresh food and excellent afternoon tea with a little drop of sparkle!! A must visit if you are in Durham.
S. H.
Compact and interesting garden probably just past its peak now (late August) though still some late summer flowering perennials. Will be good in Spring and early Summer too. House very interesting and of quite some age. Definitely going back again.
C. C.
The gardens that belong to Crook Hall are beautiful and are literally bursting with colour. There are several (quite intimate) gardens all with different themes and each one as beautiful as the next. Very peaceful to stroll around. A good garden for children too as the little paths are exciting to follow, there is a privet maze to explore and hidden in the flora are quirky statues to seek. You might be lucky to find the real cat asleep in flower beds too. A wonderful cafe offering lovely coffee and cakes plus a fuller menu.
A. R. G. w.
Pleased to see that Crookhall is open again and now ran bybthe national trust.
Well worth a visit with plenty to see and do and a nice little coffee shop too.
M. F.
3 hours free parking for national trust members, Maze on entry gardens and cafe open
P. L.
Lovely place to spend a hour
K. G.
Beautiful gardens! This is a perfect place to relax, explore, read or even have a tremendous feast (afternoon tea) inside the beautiful house that is located in the center of the gardens.
V. B.
Just a magical place where I think faeries probably live. Beautiful inside and out. Do not being a picnic, the cafe food is stunning and the staff are am asset. So reading reviews and just go!
r. h.
A peaceful and quiet place to sit or walk , lots of different gardens to look at, a large range of plants in each garden to view, lots of secret trails and hideaways to find , lots of discoveries for children to find , abundance of wildlife from butterflies and bees to birds and damsel flies, water birds on the pond, lots of statues and curios scattered around the gardens, staff at the entrance very pleasant and polite, didn't try the cafe so can't comment but will be trying it out on next visit, car park fills quickly and it's not owned by crook hall so charges apply .
B. T.
A wonderful gem within Durham City. Take a book and just soak in the calming aura. Enjoy a drink and piece of cake or afternoon tea with friends with in a continuously changing garden. Wonderful
C. W.
Delightful place for a light lunch.
Good food, mostly vegetarian. Well served: for example 2 teas were served in a large China teapot. We've been in winter when the architect designed cafe was light and warm. And we've been in the summer where many of the glass panels slide open to make a delightful indoor adjunct to a sunny terrace.
A. B.
Great to see Crook Hall Gardens open again. They are lovely gardens to walk around and there are lots of activities for young children.
A. P.
The gardens are pretty with lots of little areas to wander around. There isn't much to see or explore in the house yet.
A. W.
Beautiful gardens overlooking the wonderful city of Durham. A must see to appreciate the work that has gone in over the years.
B. D.
Really nice gardens with a variety of areas including a maze, walled gardens, orchard and pond area. They regularly have events of for children and the 2 cafes serve a great afternoon tea.
P.
Hidden Gem. Not much of the buildings were open on our visit. But beautiful gardens and views

Very pretty gardens. Not massive but well worth a visit. Durhams hidden gem.
s. m.
Back open, not quite sure about the cafe.
M. E. G.
We love it. My 3 years old too. We have the annual pass and visit it almost every week. The café is quite good, it has different cakes, scones, gluten-free treats... Ah! And the employees are very friendly!!
P. M. (.
Its s lovely hall. Very interesting to walk around. Outside sre some wonderful gardens with secret places and a gorgeous pond. When you've finished exploring finish off at the cafe for a scone and a cuppa.

Lively gardens very near Durham City Centre. Well worth a visit.
C. Y. L. G.
So beautiful place, perfect to take a really nice pictures ♥️ the only thing is that the ticket to enter has a little high cost, for students is £7.50
M. R.
A lovely morning spent viewing the gardens.
L. B.
Such a lovely little place located very close to the city centre. We visited for afternoon tea where they catered very well for a dairy free diet (the scone and cakes were amazing!!). To finish the afternoon we had a walk around the hall and gardens. Definitely looking forward to visiting again when the gardens are in full bloom.
E. M.
Very calm for a service station, lots of picnic tables and space
J. S.
Bit of a hidden gem. Beautiful gardens and great afternoon tea.
R. R.
We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours looking round the gardens, which are varied and beautifully maintained. The hall itself is mainly set up around being a wedding/event venue, but there are some interesting exhibits. Looks like they do a formidable afternoon tea as well, though we resisted!
S. L.
A unique place full of history with beautiful grounds. Friendly helpful staff.
P. G. (.
Overly place, busy while we were there but there's so much in Durham we had great time
B. B.
One of the most gorgeous places to visit in the North East . It’s a visit which combines everything ,tranquility ,beauty ,friendliness and first class customer service . The gardens are spectacular at any time of year as is the hall . The cafe produces the most amazing food and staff always go the extra mile . Activities are so well planned for both adults and children. Every time I visit I see something different exploding into colour in the majestic gardens . Shout out to all staff but manager Kelly always smiling . A gem of a place .
P. C.
Not much colour around Xmas time but worth a visit during spring and summer months.
D. D.
Very interesting, quiet & peaceful gardens.
Views across Durham are wonderful.
Quaint and complex series of rooms on a small and cosy scale.
Access to venue a little difficult, but well worth it! Once you are in there are plenty of seats in the grounds to help you enjoy the elegant layout of the gardens as well as the fabulous views.
S. F.
The staff are so friendly, excellent service and the coffee is to die for. Fabulous choice of homemade cakes and scones plus lots if other delicious fare.
They run a loyalty scheme and for every 8 hot drinks you get another free.
Dogs are welcome on the terrace and they even get complimentary doggie treats🐕
The gardens and hall are amazing, well designed and lots of information about the history of the place. Regular 'theme ' events as well. Recent ones were Harry Potter and Peter Pan.
All in all, a wonderful experience!
K. T.
Crook Hall is one of my my most loved places to spend time and I have been visiting for about a decade now. The gardens are just an amazing wash of colour for the bulk of the year, with such a range of plants and sculptures etc. I love how rustic and not too overly manicured the gardens are, and each having its own distinct style- makes for a much more interesting appearance. There is always staff pottering planting and tidying, and every time I visit there has been changes/improvements. I've seen the hall really grow (literally- that hedge maze was only waist high when I first visited!) in terms of what it offers visitors, over the years, as well as develop further as a wedding venue. (I wish I was trying the knot here, now. Maybe a vow renewal, as we are already 8 years married! 😆) I've attended several events here, including Adults Halloween, Frankenstein theatre show, Halloween afternoon tea, normal afternoon tea and they are always good fun. The house is also, always so cosy and inviting. There is never any pressure to rush around. You can really explore at your leisure and it feels like your far from anywhere. A real gem of a place. I really hope it remains a place I love to visit.
s. a.
Lived less than a mile away from Crook Hall for 10 years and visited for the first time recently. I wasn't expecting much more than a few lawns and a tea room, however I was very surprised and impressed.
The place is absolutely wonderful, and feels much bigger and more remote than its compact urban-fringe setting would suggest. The gardens were gorgeous in late July and the house really feels like you're seeing someones cared-for home.
We upgraded our ticket to an annual pass, so we will definitely be back.
J. B.
Lovely venue - attended a wedding here and they managed the whole occasion perfectly.
Very good afternoon tea although nothing spectacular. Better scones, sandwiches and cakes could help push this to the next level. Great crockery and setting is fantastic.
A. P.
Nice gardens.
B.
even in winter grear place to visit. And now all festive
J. R.
My 1st visit and I loved it , house and gardens are stunning flowers I had never seen before . We spent full afternoon there and had coffee in the attached cafe. Veiws of the cathedral are stunning. Beautiful wedding venue.
F. R.
We got the afternoon tea deal - which includes the entrance fee - and thought it seemed reasonable value for money. The laminated guide was informative. The piano music throughout the house was a little annoying, especially if you sat in earshot for the afternoon tea. Nice wander around, and some interesting historical Durham things.
Took home some apples (free) and made a tasty crumble - which was a nice treat.
R. E.
Great bank holiday Monday. Good cafe gardens and house restaurant high tea in garden looked inviting. Carparking reasonable with riverside location for walking Weather could make or break the day though. Garden cafe doesn't attract the garden charge and worth a visit.
T. M.
This place is phenomenal, in the café the cakes and scones are really well baked for a half-decent price. Going into the garden everything is well looked after and there are fabulous plants all year round. The garden consists of many small gardens which are totally different every time you walk from 1 garden to another. The house although renovated still gives a traditional Gregorian feel and is set out beautifully. When passing through Durham, I highly recommend going to Crook Gardens!
S. F.
Don’t write reviews very often but we were so impressed with our first visit to Crook Hall today. We suprised our friend for her birthday with sparkling afternoon tea at your wonderful hall. We had a table of four indoors with a fantastic view of Durham Cathedral. The food was excellent as usual and so was the service.
S. P.
Beautiful place especially on such a gorgeous Autumn day like this.
J. C.
Very interesting house and beautiful garden.
F. S.
Visit to crook hall was amazing. The gardens are beautiful.
Z. B.
We were there for a wedding. The access isnt great for people with disabilties. It was a bit chilly at times even though the fires and radiators were on. The building and gardens are lovely the bit we saw, would definately pop back to visit. We had afternoon tea which was ok, the sandwiches were nice, the scones were dreadful( sorry) and there was too much sweet and not enough savoury for us. Drinks were reasonably priced and the staff were nice.
M. S.
The gardens are the best part. They are divided into themed areas and there is a good maze. I visited in early May and there was lots of colour and interest. The house is in three parts, one medieval, one Jacobean and one Georgian. The medieval part consists of a hall and service wing but has lost its solar. The central part had some exhibitions of paintings when I was there. The Georgian part is mainly devoted to catering for weddings which is clearly a big thing here. There are wonderful views of the cathedral and castle from the first floor. The entrance building has a cafe but I did not try this.
L. H.
This place is a little gem. Lovely gardens (even in January), interesting house and super cafe with delicious scones, soup, sandwiches and cakes all fresh and served by friendly staff. Definitely recommend a visit.
J. D.
Absolutely beautiful little jewel of a place just at the edge of Durham City. The gardens are fabulous with lots of little nooks to sit in and admire views in many directions including the Cathedral. The hall is so very quaint and cosy and welcoming as well as interesting. Wonderful afternoon and scones to die for.
A. S.
Beautiful place in the centre of Durham. Once in the grounds you could be in the middle of nowhere. So much character and history to the place. Highly recommend a visit.
The café is really great too and the Afternoon Tea deal is fabulous value for money.
D. M.
Lovely historic building.
The family and staff are very friendly.
Afternoon tea in the Gazebo was perfect.
The maze of well kept gardens are beautiful in the Summer.
The apartment above the coffee shop is a hidden gem.
o. 0.
High tea in beautiful surroundings, finger sandwiches & a selection of cakes and the best scone I've ever ate.
One little criticism, maybe a personal preference, I would have liked a slice of quiche or something savoury with a bit of a crunch.
Even though the sun might be shining outside, inside this fabulous old house it's a bit chilly so maybe take a cardi/jacket or a scarf for your knees
C. W.
Very steep and uneven paths up to the house through beautiful gardens. Amazing historic house with great afternoon tea. We were attending a wedding here which was fabulous.
T. P.
Another visit to this beautiful home and gardens. A hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Durham, featuring a series of enclosed gardens which are like outdoor rooms, with paths leading from one to the next, all immaculately presented. Plenty to see for all the family, plus medieval hall, golden attic room, and relaxing tearooms.
T. H.
Glad it's open again. It's NT but it's cheaper to join NT of Scotland!!!
F. D.
Beautiful place. So much bigger than expected.

First visit to Crook Hall with family on bank holiday week end. Fairy Tales event was on.this was enjoyable and our son liked the characters. The gardens are beautiful each with a slightly different feel. The Hall is fascinating with 3 buildings covering medieval through to Georgian period. Maze was good as was cafe food and service . Would definitely go again probably for afternoon tea

What wonderful grounds! We saw tadpoles and stickle back fish, ducks with ducklings and swans making up their nest's ready for signets.
A thoroughly enjoyable stroll around the large pond and small fish pond. A brilliant place to bring kids and dogs, especially if you like to picnic!
Near the car parks are 2 fenced area's where dog's are permitted to run loose off lead, which is a lovely idea.
Could happily spend a far few hours here, will definitely return.

My 1st visit was on Friday for my niece's wedding. It is truly a magical and hidden place, as I didn't realise it was so near to Durham centre and can well see why they chose it. To have the privledge to have it all to ourselves and be able to explore at will was wonderful.
It was such a beautiful day, in beautiful surroundings. My next visit and I'm sure of many, will be to try the tea rooms. Looking forward to showing my friends.
B. H.
Relaxing gardens to wander round and lots of seats
c. t.
In getting married here in August. I only live 5 miles from the place and didn't know it existed. It's 900 year old and has fantastic gardens, coffee ship and a maze. Brilliant bites of Durham cathedral. They have a 2 bedroom apartment which you can rent above the coffee shop.
A. M.
Visited on May 20th 2019 This is a truly wonderful house which dates back a very long way indeed. The Jacobean room was especially lovely. The gardens are divided into individual sections and all are beautiful in their own way.
C. E.
Unusual find in the centre of Durham. Staff couldn't have been more helpful. Great value too. Adjoining cafe/bistro does great coffee and some lovely treats. Highly recommended.
H. M.
Small garden but nice
M. B.
We visited Crook hall for the Christmas event I have to say it is amazing. plenty to do to last a good few hours. Fake snowball fight, craft's and the garden's for a treasure hunt. And a dedicated time slot to see santa.
Santa is great and it was lovely when he was chatting to our daughter.
Food was very nice inside the hall and the cafe has a ok selection.
Would love to go again next year.
J. L.
Have been a number of times recently on a Sunday. Each time been served by Gary who is extremely pleasant and welcoming. We visit with our elderly mother and he can't do enough for us. Just sampled the little cake bites. OMG! You must try them. Great service and food, will take some beating.
T. G.
My wife and I were at Crook Hall as part of a wedding reception. Every thing went smoothly and perfectly for the bride and groom, all the guests had a wonderful time, the staff were outstanding. The food was excellent, I would definitely recommend this to anyone wishing to book a venue for any occasion.
B. B.
My friends and I call in here for a snack, and they are always excellent. Very reasonable prices and good portions. Try the meze dishes. Today I had a mini ploughmans. A variety of cheeses and biscuits, grapes and two lovely chutneys. One day we night have time to visit their house and gardens. Looks great.
R. B.
A pleasant set of gardens, laid out as a series of connected "rooms", with interpretive signs. Most of the historic house is open to visitors, and has been fitted out with lots of period artefacts. The house is perhaps the most interesting part of the visit. There are also a couple of cafes - nothing special foodwise, but in a lovely setting.
S. C.
Beautiful place
c. s.
Absolutely beautiful place, once you walk through the gates, you completely forget you are on the edge of a city, like going back in time, really one of Durhams hidden gems, so much so me and my other half have booked our wedding there.
R. E. P.
Such a gorgeous place for a casual stroll around the house and gardens. Afternoon tea very nice, definitely a place to visit multiple times.
T. D.
Top place to go if you are really interested in gardens and flowers. It's a must!! We also had the Gentleman afternoon tea. This was outstanding. We will be back
L. M.
Only went into crook hall tea rooms and would give them 10 stars if I could . Clean beautiful seating area outside as we had our bikes . We were given blankets to keep us warm after our ride and didn't have to move to order food which was amazing as they had gluten free bread and soya milk which you can never find anywhere in Durham or in any tea shop from Houghton to consett ( that we have found together ) . Even asked for pombears with my sandwich and nothing was any bother . Thank you so so much for you kind welcome and service we will definitely recommend it and will be back lyn and Chris x
D. T.
Excellent food fantastically friendly staff grounds and hall are beautiful. Plenty of seating around the grounds. So peaceful. Definitely worth a visit mire than once.
D. W.
Fantastic multi sensory visit. Granddaughter in awe of Mary Poppins, I would recommend visiting these lovely gardens to anyone, all ages catered for at the beautiful cafes too.
J. S.
Lovely place all round. Ancient 16th century Crook Hall, beautiful gardens and excellent, helpful staff. Also good food at reasonable prices in both the main cafe and in the gardens. Well worth a visit.
J. H.
We got married here 23.3.18. The Venue is beyond stunning. Kelly and her team off staff were brilliant and ensured we had a magical day. You must visit crook hall and see it for yourself. The cafe is fabulous too. Crook Hall really does have it all.
H. A.
Hidden gem only a short walk from Durham city centre. Beautiful gardens and fascinating old hall. Has a car park and choice of places to eat. Well worth a visit.
K. L.
Will definitely be back once the better weather is here but even on a cold winter's day it was great. The tea room was brilliant and the staff very accommodating, as we had a dog and sat outside they looked after us all very well 🐶🙂
D. S.
Lovely unspoilt house based around a medieval hall, with delightful and varied gardens. New cafe serves a good range of snacks and light meals.
S. T.
Fantastic place, we go here again and again (making annual membership a bargain). The food is great too, especially the afternoon tea or the gardener's lunch. Only downside is that it's not open on Saturdays (weddings).
R. L.
Adults and children very happy here. Spacious interesting and friendly. We delicious afternoon tea. Staff were exceptionally friendly and engaged.
We had the afternoon tea for a birthday

Lovely place for a little walk out
L. W.
We had a really nice day at crook hall, it was very interesting and had some great views over Durham.
The cafe was nice and the staff really helpful.
The only downside was the price which I feel was a little high.
J. M.
My daughter loves in Hartlepool and this is twice I have visited Crook Hall. The gardens are lovely at the different seasons. And they have a first class tea shop. Place worth a visit
J. C.
Beautiful gardens with surprises tucked away in the many nooks and crannies. Interesting house and very friendly staff and we enjoyed our lunch there.
M. G.
Only a brief walk from the bustling centre of Durham City is this delightfully peaceful oasis. The old house has original elements of both its Tudor origins and it's Georgian extensions. It is still partly a private house but the owners have granted partial access to the house. In the well maintained gardens you can wander in the footsteps of William Wordsworth and TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh.
J. M.
Wonderful place to visit . Crook Hall is in walking distance from the centre of Durham . Medieval/Jacobean hall on various levels . Fabulous secret type gardens . Maze , small lake . Cafe . A hidden gem .
T. B.
My partner and I love the gardens and regularly eat in the cafe which has a limited menu but the food is very well prepared and tasty.
C. S.
Stunning gardens in the centre of Durham.

Modern apartments in Durham City Centre, just a 5 minute walk from Durham Market Place and Durham Cathedral. 1 apartment has 2 bedrooms which can be set up as 2 twin rooms or 1 twin and 1 double and the other one has 1 double en-suite bedroom. Quiet area too.
M. K.
Well worth a visit, some really nice grounds.
l. m.
This is yhe most amazing place! I can't wait to go back. The history of the house is aweaome and the gardens are so tranquil. Only downside is that it's not accesable to wheelchairs
