Reviews of Old Durham Gardens

Nestled away a twenty minute walk down the river - these gardens are very quaint and beautiful. A wonderful place to watch the sunrise and sunset over Durham with a leafy dramatic view - and behind the gardens there’s a cute farm with alpacas.
The gardens themselves aren’t open at predictable times, but that does not detract from the beauty of this place! You can easily peek through the gates and look at the enclosed gardens or wander through the rosebushes at the bottom of the stairs. Great for picnics.

Very comfortable for a walk. Pet friendly. Free fruits.

Beautiful place of tranquility...well, you can hear the bells of Durham Cathedral. Nut mind you: The walled gardens are only open from March 31st through end October, at the times indicated (Sun & Thurs, 2-4pm).

Restored 17th Gardens, lots of heritage fruit varieties inside the walled gardens (open 2pm to 4pm every Sunday during the summer). Outside many varieties of fruit trees, Slow, Apple and Plum. Worth a visit as nice Riverside walk from Durham.

A nice little garden by the Old Beck, just a 10-15 mins from Durham. Beautiful walk along the Wear.

I've lived in Durham all my life and only just discovered these beautiful gardens! We visited in September when the gardens were full of apples. Nice place to have a picnic after a walk along the river.

A really lovely walk along the river to the garden. The garden is lovely, probably better in the summer when more flowers but still a nice place to sit. The 2 members of staff we spoke to were very informative and interesting. Some litererature available about the history of the garden. It was lovely to hear the cathedral bells and peacocks calling. Will definitely visit again

Doesn't take long to go around these, but they're well tended and really pretty, and there are loads of lovely walks to and from. Amazing how they've been rescued from dereliction by volunteers, it's a great story. Dogs welcome on a lead.

Sadly closed when we chose to visit. Only open Thursday and Sundays, but from what we could see looked fab.

Beautiful walk to old Durham Gardens.

The garden is beautifully maintained. I visited on a sunny weekend. The lower area, outside of the walled garden, was busy with groups picnicking. It's a lovely place for a picnic. It's a good stroll along the riverbank from Durham city centre.

Beautiful place to visit, Gardens lovely.

What a beautiful find. Fruit trees coming in to blossom. Daffodils and wild flowers. Benches to sit and admire the calm tranquillity. A glimpse into a walled garden and a visit to a neighbouring farm to talk to alpacas. Lovely place.

Very pleasant, charming outer garden with a long flower bed, lots of roses and a lovely orchard with heritage apple and pear trees. It is perfectly nested between the woods and the river and there is not even a door that would separate the gardens from the nature, so you feel so free there. Since there is no entrance fee, our family regularly goes back to relax whenever we are nearby. The walled garden is a formal garden with heritage plants, and is open during the opening hours.

Love this place.. a hidden gem just a few minutes walk from the city

Great place to walk through or have a picnic under the orchard trees. Its maintained by volunteers so not always pristine but I think that's what's great about the place. Finish your walk along the river or head to the gardens via the river.

Very much a work in progress as far as the walled garden is concerned, but still a real haven of peace and tranquility. The gardens are stocked with a huge variety of heritage varieties of plums, pears and apples. The gardens are a community resource and the general public can help themselves to the produce. Damsons were abundant during our visit. Occasional musical events are held in the walled garden to raise funds. Unfortunately as the gardens are run by volunteers the opening hours are very limited.

Great music and dance event, well catered. Lots of fun for all ages, in beautiful grounds. Can volunteer on a Thursday gardening etc. Open on Thursday pm and Sunday for viewings

Great example of its type and also community support for it.
Well worth a visit.

Nice place to spend part of the afternoon before or after a riverside walk for anyone interested in heritage/historic gardening/orchards and associated architecture from the 17th century.

Today's traditional Wassailing event was memorable - good fun making much noise while asking for a blessing for the apple trees in the orchard. Hoping for a good harvest this year!
