Reviews of Edinburgh Filmhouse
B. F.
I love going to the movies and this is the place for people who love films from all around the world. The rooms are comfortable and the staff is super friendly. While waiting, you can browse wonderful movies in DVD (seriously, this is a great collection) or grab a drink at the super cozy coffee/bar space.
A. P.
Although the seats weren't exactly to my liking, I can't deny how wonderful this cinema is.
I love the chance to see films that are less likely to be shown at your typical cinemas, even in a big city like Edinburgh, and I love the overall feel of the place. When I walked in and saw a pre-owned DVD and Blu-Ray section, with a classic-esc viewings screen and a quirky cafe to boot, I knew I was gonna like this cinema.
Great selection of more arthouse/international films and I love the touch of closing the curtains after the ads to then reopen for the feature.
Heck yeah, I'll be back.
D. C.
This based purely on the building , the breakfasts and the warm friendly staff , We were recently in Edinburgh and were so impressed with Filmhouse we had Breakfast there 3 times , very friendly staff it was a hub for all peoples would recommend a visit and if you have time catch a movie , they show more independent films by the posters anyway worth a visit
N. K.
Was pleasantly surprised with this! I was meant to book the scotsman but somehow got it wrong. However, this small, intimate cinema was lovely. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is there was hardly any legroom and the seats looked very tattered and worn and there were no cupholders - could do with a little love.
S. C.
The best place in Edinburgh to see a film on the big screen. It is well programmed, with a mixture of mainstream and independent films, as well as frequent film festivals. The tickets are reasonably priced, the seats are comfortable and the place has loads of character.
A. L. C.
Lots of knowledge and hardworking staff to give a good experience. Interesting bar café, generally fully of generally interesting people. Needs are vamp but a new one is on the way. A sort of chapel to film devotees rather than a church.
G. C.
Maybe my favourite cinema. Top two at worst. They have a wide range of films it'd be hard to see otherwise, and the food in the café is excellent too.
R. W. M.
In my opinion this is the best cinema in the world. Certainly it's the best cinema in Edinburgh.
They have a good range of art-house films, great photos and pictures on the wall and a cafe/restaurant that is buzzing in the evenings.
L. A.
Filmhouse shows a good mix of independent and mainstream movies. The cinemas are always comfortable. Support local cinemas if you can!
H. B.
Always show an interesting and broad range of movies. My favourite place when I want to avoid the usual blockbusters. The cafe/bar is a great place to chill too. The seats in the cinema don't have the most room but I can live with it for the good vibes.
K. G.
Beautiful independent cinema showing something a little different to the mainstream. This great facility houses 3 great quality screens, a cafe and concession stands. All staff are super friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. Projection and sound are both crisp and clear.
M. M.
Membership is super affordable and it gives you access to all the movies with really good prices!
M. Z. (.
Was attending during SLA and it was very nicely organized, seats have been socially distanced which felt really nice compared to cinemas like Vue or Odeon.
N. A.
Lovely cinema without huge crowds and screaming children. Very great selection of European art house styled films, and they have a £5 ticket offer for under 25 which is amazing! Definitely better than any Odeon or Vue cinema.
J. G.
Super Indy cinema screening independent films and world cinema, home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival and many other smaller festivals, last cinema in town that still boasts real cine projectors allowing them to show classic works like 2001 in 70mm print as well as digital. Screens everything from latest movies to 1920s silent classics and wide selection of world cinema, plus the lovely cafe-bar for great food and drink
N. B.
An excellent wee independent cinema with a small shop selling DVDs and books. The Edinburgh Filmhouse also has a slightly pricey but very tasty café bar. Good selection of alcohols. Nice sweet treats. Pretty decent veggie options.
Properly gorgeous chilli con carne. 14/10 would heccin recommend.
A. H.
I see I gave the Filmhouse two stars with no comment. That must have been a mistake. The Filmhouse is a fantastic resource, with well curated films, comfortable cinemas and a large cafe with reliable menu. I have been going there for years a don't remember having a two star experience. Correcting to five stars although I haven't been since covid.
D. T.
Proper cinema atmosphere and a good selection of films.
W. W.
Not a bad place it's one of the old places still around in Edinburgh only been once so can't really say much
P. J.
Lovely little theatre. It made a perfect setting for the Film Festival.
N. A.

f. a.
Nice place, small outside but very interesting inside. Everything under one roof. Amazing
L. G.
Very well organised guideline due to pandemic in place good customer service kind and helpful
G. B.
Great place! Home of the Edinburgh Film Festival.
L.
I'm looking forward to the Blu-ray/dvd shop reopening. Top notch selection of the best of international and homegrown cinema releases.
D. M.
Good sized portions. Menu is heavily Greek orientated but still has some pub favourites
P. S.
Really enjoyed the Norwegian film Ninjababy and the same subsequent interview.
R. O.
Lovely fresh Mediterranean food with charming service. Marred by jobsworth on the door who jumped out from behind his perspex screen and shouted at me for 'Just walking straight in' when in fact I had registered with my phone and applied sanitiser and was following o
my companion who was being shown to the table we had reserved. I was made to look very stupid in front of the queue. I had no idea what I had done wrong while this guy went apoplectic. A woman in a plastic kiosk was also barking at me. I was sent ba k to the door like a naughty child. Made worse by the fact I am currently struggling with mobility issues and need 2 sticks to walk. Most places have been very helpful but this crew need retraining. Once inside the restaurant staff were lovely and the food scrumptious. This is my 30th annual visit to the Fringe, briefly spoiled by this incident. My friend wanted to berate the shouty man on the way out but I persuaded her it wasn't worth it. I still don't know what I had done wrong!!
D. B.
The Edinburgh Filmhouse is a place for film conesiours, enthusiasts and anyone looking for a lovely, welcoming place to enjoy a movie. The Filmhouse shows both blockbusters, international films and old classics in well-maintained, intimate screenings. The staff are friendly and welcoming. There is also a nice bar for a drink. It is situated in the centre of Edinburgh so there are plenty of places to eat and drink at and it is at an accessible location. Well worth a visit!
R. F.
The best cinema in the city. All the more amazing that it is independent! They hold seasons/themed events and player older movies as well as new releases, which is great. Cheaper tickets available in the day as well :)
I. C.
Ok so this place is good in that it shows films that you may not be able to see on general release at mainstream cinemas. Honestly though, it's kind of behind in terms of the viewing experience. Shallow seating gives you a great view of the back of people's heads. Small screens, poor audio quality and black levels of projectors were also poor. Drinks are allowed in the cinema, so be prepared for the people who have to get up to pee all the time. Would only go here if using the 2 for 1 tickets offer.
I. O.
Always love the filmhouse. Informal, best movies that are usually interesting rather than blockbusters. Helpful staff. Great cafe with good choice of food. Disabled access, disabled facilities, lifts to other level where needed, affordable ticketing etc etc. If you are visiting Edinburgh, don't miss this.
N. B.
Went there to watch The Favourite. I enjoyed the movie, however there were a few noisy people in the back. Another person decided that it was enough and told them to be quiet. Other than that, the cinema was alright, excepting the toilets that could potentially be cleaned a wee bit better.
L.
I'm looking forward to the Blu-ray/dvd shop reopening. Top notch selection of the best of international and homegrown cinema releases.
S. M.
Always a great buzz around the Filmhouse, great atmosphere. A decent enough menu but food is not the centre piece, it's the people. Note: a coffee is a coffee so don't expect experienced barista input 😁.
W. W.
Not a bad place it's one of the old places still around in Edinburgh only been once so can't really say much
J. W.
Top class. If you like film, you will inevitably spend time here. Edinburgh is extraordinarily lucky to have this venue as well as the venerable Cameo. Restaurant and bar are good enough to attract lots of people who are going to the nearby Usher Hall and Lyceum Theatre, so it's often pretty full.
S. V.
We stopped here to have a small dinner, since all restaurants were really crowded. A cool place, like the dutch say “gezellig”. We ordered mushroom risotto, I didn’t really like it. The rice was too hard and a bit dry. The couches are old and really aren’t comfortable unfortunately.
M. M.
Great cinema! One of the best in Edinburgh, if not the best. There's aren't only blockbusters, but a variety of different options from which to choose from - from indie movies to old classics. They have many themed viewings, based maybe on movie directors or for children, etc. The ticket isn't too expensive either and there is a nice café inside.
J. H.
A stunning cinema that puts the big-shots to shame. Very amicable staff, fantastic film selections and countless opportunities to discover your new favourite film. Splendid little cafe with lovely coffee, traybakes and more. I visit here frequently with my friends and we're never disappointed!
L. S.
A fantastic cinema with very welcoming staff especially if you are disabled like I am. The Filmhouse is one of my favourite cinemas in Edinburgh. Their snacks aren't too overpriced and the cafe is very good. They show some more unusual films and every so often have something as awesome as Labyrinth or the Dark Crystal on. What more could I ask for?
c. s.
Lovely cinema, nice cafe, nice looking bar with a decent range of ales. But the seats need redoing!
Numb bum after half an hour, and being comfy while watching the film is the important part. Will not stop me coming back though. Really liked the place, had a really good old school feel about it. It's going to a cinema, not a multiplex
D. S.
I love how central the Filmhouse is! I popped along after work one evening to see Her (which is brilliant), and it was so lovely to have dinner and a movie all in the centre of town without any faff. The cinemas themselves are small but comfortable, and the smaller size gives it a completely different, more laid-back, ambience for me. It was nice to laugh with everyone else during the funny parts, it felt like we were all enjoying the film together. A great venue!
H. B.
The Filmhouse is just a great place to watch films!! It's accessible and most staff are helpful and friendly. It gives opportunities to see films that don't often reach the big screen.
The food in the café isn't cheap, but it's delicious and there are lots of options for vegetarians and vegans.
It's well worth being a member as you receive discount on tickets and on food and drink in the café, plus invitations to free screenings.
V. P.
This is a rather old building with a vintage looking bar and theatre. The tickets are pricier than your Odeon or Vue, but they offer really good memberships for students. Good viewing and sound even from the sides.
D. M.
Good sized portions. Menu is heavily Greek orientated but still has some pub favourites
D. Q.
Great cinema with a wide variety of indie films.
Great cafe with a good selection of beer's.
B. M.
Good atmosphere. Seats are slightly uncomfortable (generally took me 3 attempts to spell 'comfortable' there. Maybe its too early to be writing reviews). Drinks at the bar aren't the most expensive. Didn't try the popcorn, which is a major regret of mine.
S. K.
I want to promote this place as much as possible. Its a brilliant little theatre on Lothian Road and don't always play just the mainstream stuff you expect. You can always find indie films and great documentary films here. Also it has a lovely bar/cafe and a dvd shop which is well worth checking out!!! The staff are always friendly but for more popular screenings I'd recommend booking, cause they have smaller screens they can fill up pretty fast
C. S.
A brilliant viewing experience! They show a range of art house films, classics and foreign movies. It is a great place to see things which you otherwise might not go to see! The staff are friendly and pleasant, and everything is reasonably priced.
Only 1 negative... no pop corn!!! :o but that does mean a really, really clean cinema, and nobody crunching mid movie.
B.
The student membership is great if you have Tuesday evenings free - £2 movies are a steal. And these include both indie gems and acclaimed, award winning films of the year.
J. H.
A gem.
I have the Filmhouse to thank for introducing me to many wonderful, exotic and sometimes downright strange worlds. Always with an eclectic line up of film showings, I love their boutique screens.
A very relaxed atmosphere here I feel comfortable visiting alone or with friends. Staff are helpful and always quick to recommend when asked.
It's an Edinburgh institution.
J. S.
THE place to go for people who love film. Part of a European family of cinema houses which share latest, international, art house, and quirky films. Host to the Film Festival. A great DVD shop of many genres in the foyer. Still has an almost family atmosphere. The screens are a bit old fashioned. The café is popular but is perhaps not as professional or up to date as it could be.
J. P.
Went to see Scotland future star Jack Lowden in Calibre as part of the film festival excellent film well done to all involved.
A. G.
The Filmhouse isn't huge but that's part of its charm. Sure it's part of a chain, a sort of family of independent cinemas, but it's not one of the souless franchise brands.
You'll get a mix of films here; art house, independent, big titles of even golden oldies. I spend entire weekends in the building during the Scotland Loves Anime festival.
The seats in screen one are comfortable. This is important if you're attempting a marathon watch... but I'm yet to find a theatre seat that doesn't begin to get a little comfortable after the 4 hour mark.
I know it's all about economics and tickets per viewing but I wish the seats had a higher gradient. There is a chance you'll pick a seat with another directly in front, as good as, and someone tall sits down in front of you.
This is much more of an issue outside screen one.
There is a bar and restaurant downstairs. I wouldn't seek the bar out as a place to eat but as a venue to may people of to grab a meal between films it's good enough.
Lastly, the Filmhouse offers a number of loyalty card options and they're totally worth checking out.
M. K.
The Filmhouse has a very nice mix of mainstream, indie and international movies presented in a cosy, stylish and comfortable setting. The cafe bar is equally stylish, and even if you are not there to see a film it's a great place to eat and drink in a very warm atmosphere.
F. M. G.
The seats in the cinema feel dated and a bit uncomfortable compared to more modern cinemas.
The bar/restaurant is very crowded at peak times and it is often hard to get a seat. The food is good but some options are a bit overpriced. A great programme of films.
G.
Great cinema that doesn't serve popcorn. This is a good thing! Good bar selection to choose from and take into the cinema with you (a place that treats you like an adult)! If you find cinemas can be overwhelming with sound and screen size, this place is perfect :)
D. S.
Amazing city centre location with really fresh food. Often used by mums with push chairs and older folk, which I always take to be a good sign. I love the food and the vegetarian options are also really tasty.
M. H.
Nice foyer and cafe. The auditorium itself ( cinema 3), was functional, decent size screen and comfortable seats. It was pretty much full. Would return if the film we wanted to see was not on general realise.
M. H.
Great independent arts Cinema with three screens, a wonderful and varied programme and helpful friendly staff.
The Cafe and Bar is great for a drink and something to eat even if you're not seeing a film. Well priced with healthy options for all diets.
J. B.
A varied programme of films, often themed by director, genre or country. There are baby and carer screenings and some educational events.
The film house cafe bar is lovely! Vegetarians are catered for and some lovely world cuisine is often on offer.
The cafe can get busy as the weekends and you can take your drinks into the cinema.
The cafe hosts a regular movie themed quiz night.
There is a book crossing shelf in the cafe.
There are films for sale in the foyer.
Look out for the 'secret book sculpture' - the first of a series of mysterious sculptures to appear in venues across Edinburgh.
A. M.
The bar is expensive and not all that atmospheric, the seats don't have much leg room and aren't very comfortable, the screens are a bit clapped out but it has one redeeming feature which makes up for all that... the regular audience is so pretentious and irritating that you'll be thankful they have the Filmhouse. It means they don't show up in regular theatres cluttering the place up with their highbrow rubbish.
D. A.
To be sure it doesn't show the latest blockbusters but it does show old blockbusters and the latest 'independent/limited release' movies; as well as all the other kinds of movies you would expect in an arthouse cinema.
The Filmhouse cafe bar sells reasonably priced drinks and great value meals and gives the whole place a wonderful buzz.
The "Edinburgh Film Guild" (with its own secret cinema) is worth checking out - Google it for details.
e. k.
Awesome no-frills theater with very affordable prices for tickets. Didn't explore their snacks but it didn't smell like overpriced popcorn so that's a plus. Great if you just want to see a movie without paying extra for reclining super sofas.
C. G.
The cinema is fine but the food in the bar is not to write home about, warmed up microwave dried out rice. Yuk. Apart from that please open again soon.
G. K.
Decent cafe. Screening rooms could use some refurbishing. Smell from toilets in small room definitely not a plus. Always an interesting selection of (mostly) non mainstream films. A hub for Edinburgh cinephiles.
K. M.
A staple of Edinburgh cinemas, the Filmhouse has very comfortable seating, has really fair prices in their cafe and has an easy online booking system though you have to create a user account. Note, an online user account is not the same as being a Filmhouse member: the former is free and facilitates getting your ticket on your phone, the latter is to get discounted film tickets and discounted cafe items.
P. Y.
From the movie side I love this independent cinema so that would be 5 stars actually. But from the bar/cafe bar side it's brought down to a 3. There is no queuing system in the cafe bar which is fine and that means bar staff should take note of who is next in line to be served. Being an ex barmaid in a busier establishment than the Filmhouse tonight and chatting to someone else in the queue who ran his own bar we know this is doable and not actually difficult. Unfortunately it was a fail. Staff were pleasant enough when you were served. I would put this down to lack of training. If offering a service then do it right especially when most of your patrons are on a timed schedule to catch a film
M. C. (.
As one of the independent cinemas in Edinburgh that aims to celebrate world cinema in all its brilliance and diversity, we go occasionally to watch classic films or to enjoy independent or international films that you might not get to watch from other more chain cinemas. The old-worldly seating in the cinema brings you back in time and makes you feel like you're in an extravagant setting and you should really be watching the films with well dressed ladies and gentlemen. The ticket desk staff are always friendly and happy to help. Feel free to also peruse the DVDs they've got for sale!
S.
This place showcases films in various accents and regions, but there are no subtitles always. They should display subtitles even for films in English. Also, they should improve on the seatings and audio quality.
T. B.
My favourite cinema. I love the variety of films they show and they put on some superb seasons (Uncanny Valley and Scotland Loves Anime are my faves). Staff are lovely and the bar does fantastic food, with something for everyone.
f. a.
Nice place, small outside but very interesting inside. Everything under one roof. Amazing
A. R. (.
The bar/restaurant prices could be lower and the screens definitely need an upgrade. The seats are rather uncomfortable
A. G.
Amazing cinema on Edinburgh's Lothian Road that shows foreign and art-house films. The tickets aren't overly expensive and there are discounts for students and OAPs. There is a nice cafe/ bar to relax in too. There are a few smaller screens as well as one large one. They also show older black and white films and have seasons. I definitely recommend an evening here over a mainstream big chain cinema any time.
R.
Seating is lovely 💕 Thank god somewhere in Edinburgh still has old-fashioned red carpet chairs. Those toxic pleather ones that stick to skin just fill the theatre with a "new car smell" giving people awful headaches and ruining the vintage vibes. Such a beautiful building with proper cinema ambience imo
P. C.
The Filmhouse Cinema is probably my favourite one in the city. It might not be huge and maybe the films are only there for a few there but still, this is THE cinema. I love the vibe of the place, their selection of movies is really good (from blockbusters to foreign stuff) and their bar is quite nice too. Plus, it's cheaper than bigger cinemas and so much more charming.
P. J.
Lovely little theatre. It made a perfect setting for the Film Festival.
K. A. S.
A really good cinema to go too. They are open at the moment and are social distancing. It's a shame that there isn't much to see. Still the same ridiculous cinema snack prices however.
A. M.
The only 70mm projector in Scotland.
Make sure you don't miss the special events they do for 70mm screenings, and whilst you're there try the food.
Great atmosphere, good meeting point, and hub for the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
S. R.
Here for Scotland Loves Anime. Been coming to the Filmhouse for years, but I really wish that they would invest more in Cinema 1 on air conditioning, improved seats which don't destroy your knees and a bit more space between the aisles. The beer is unfortunately rather expensive, but I think that might just be the impact of local taxation.
J. M.
Clean, comfortable seating. Was made to wait for tickets as a member of staff was reading a magazine & people waiting to obtaine tickets, when challenged as to are you serving, got a look of how dare you, and received a reply of I will be with you in a minute.
Do your job or move on.
S. m.
Been here for lunch and the cinema a few times, food usually decent, but not today unfortunately. The 3 bean chilli was very bland, with some sliced jalapenos thrown on as an afterthought.
Will go back though, maybe I just chose the wrong dish!
G. R.
I will always support the Filmhouse and independent cinema. Be aware as a charity it operates on a tight budget and investment is required to bring it up to modern cinema standards.
Do go, do support it, they love film as much as the people that make it.
S. H.
What can I say, best serious Film place in Edinburgh. Great atmosphere, and serious film goers. Don't be like my mate and try to stand to get out as soon as the end titles come on. You'll be the only one standing 😃
E. P.
Talking only about the bar, traditional meeting point. Nice for a cuppa and light lunch. Interesting exhibitions from time to time. The cinema offers films from everywhere in the world and independent. Highly recommended.
S. B.
Just been to see an Anime film there . Staff friendly and helpful A full house I was the oldest there an OAP but did really enjoy it .The cafe bar staff were polite and obliging . We parked in NCP car park underneath the Edinburgh Castle .8.50 for 3hrs but well worth it It was lit up as we left Cheaper than we expected . A great night out Will go again
V. L.
Comfy seats, good audio and great prices for students and under 25s. The screen isn't the biggest, but more than adequate for the more alternative movies screened here.
G. B.
Great place! Home of the Edinburgh Film Festival.
D. W.
Nice atmosphere & good food.
There’s no music playing in the bar, nor is there a TV showing sport or news, which some people find distracting. The food is excellent, the nachos in particular.
F. C.
Always a great place to see an edgy film. I enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but 2 of our group walked out. I think they preferred the bar/cafe!
A. A.
Independent cinema in the city centre for arthouse and international films. Spacious cafe bar with reasonably priced food covering a range of basic cuisines. Ales, lagers on tap. An ok range of Scotch. Good for meeting big groups or grabbing a quick meal before a film. Also sells a rang of international and arthouse dad's. No popcorn, mind.
K. C.
It would be easy to dismiss Filmhouse as a stultifying art house cinema, but it is so very much more vibrant than that. Showcasing an impeccably curated selection of independent, international, classic, or just plain curious cinema, there is always something fascinating or challenging on show. It plays host to the Edinburgh International Film Festival every June, but aside from this is also offers up the Dead by Dawn horror festival, Scotland Loves Anime, weekly baby cinema, senior citizen discounts, a fiendishly difficult monthly film quiz, and considerably more.
The bar cafe on site offers quick, tasty, reasonably priced food - their hummus is brilliant, as are the filo parcels, and toast slathered with monteray jack is hearty and satisfying. The bar selection is fairly sound, as well, and you're able to take drinks into the film with you if you fancy. A lack of air conditioning can make the theatres fairly stuffy in Summer, but heat isn't generally a problem in wintry Edinburgh, so its a minor quibble.
S. D.
If you are tired of the big name cinemas this is a good alternative. Only a short walk from city centre. Many go for the cafe which serves good well priced food and drink. Always nice vegetarian options. Small but nice wine list.
E. M.
A lovely wee arthouse that shows both arty and Holywood films. The ticket prices are more reasonable than other mainstream cinemas in the area. This is also an excellent venue during the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF). The cafe bar has a good array of coffees, drinks and food at a reasonable price. Try it out.
B. B.
Lovely food. Quick service.
Has plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.
Only issue is this place can get incredibly busy and the tables are pretty disorganised meaning you have to scramble around to get to an empty table. It can sometimes feel a bit chaotic. Also the booze is expensive. Over £6 for a pint of Innes and Gunn was a little much for me.
N. D.
Been here many times too meet/eat, but on this occasion had the most fantastic beef chilli nachos ! Seemed like real shredded beef, really tasty with lots of fresh chilli peppers, cream and lime, and served quickly. Best I've had in years -Highly recommended!
r. k.
Restaurant: Good atmosphere very tasty food and almost always quick service.
Films: The screens are fairly small, but it makes for a very intimate viewing experience, often enhancing the non-mainstream films shown.
H. H.
Such a welcoming cinema with a atmospheric cafe and exciting variety of films. Staff were lovely and we really enjoyed our visit, looking forward to going back again soon.
M. D.
Great place and excellent way to spend the evening. They have a restaurant within and service is amazing, fast and food is really tasty. You can take drinks form the bar to the cinema.
G. W.
My favourite Edinburgh cinema which offers a tremendous variety of films over its 3 screens, as well as hosting The Edinburgh Film Guild, being the home of an annual festival and having an attractive café bar with food that is often very impressive.
D. T.
Old school cinema experience. Shows arts films, nice change from the Hollywood stock and trade. Plus though pricy the food in the cafe is good quality and the portions are quiet substantial.
L. W.
You can see lots of international or art house gems at the Filmhouse (being the home of the Edinburgh International Film Festival this is unsurprising) as well as the odd blockbuster, and the programme usually has some interesting strain on the go so you can educate yourself about German cinema of the 1960s and 1970s or something along those lines.
The cafe is buzzy - I almost always bump into someone I know in there. It's not the most relaxing spot, but for meeting before a film or just somewhere centrally, it's an easy spot.
The screening rooms themselves retain some of the old school theatre charm of velvet seating and ornate pillars, but they're clean and modern.
R. L.
If you're wanting a pure visual and auditory experience this probably isn't the place for you. The atmosphere of the Film house is very casual and friendly. However I'm not sure if it's the acoustics of the older theatre or bad sound mix/equipment, but as a sound experience it can be super off putting. Very harsh and abrasive with hardly any stereo feel let alone surround. Certainly a dead and lacking bass. Which is a shame. But I don't think most people pick up on this or care. I saw the Neon Demon in here after at a small screen in the vue. It has to be said that the film was not anywhere as near as captivating in the vue - which is so far my favourite cinematic experience. If this is as important to your film experience as mine, go to the odeon or the vue. I'd rather even watch films at home on just a large TV and hifi stereo to be quite frank.
C. S.
I love the film house but three people walked in front of me to buy tickets and when I mentioned, very nicely that there was no obvious way to Que the chap on ticket desk just looked bored bored bored - perhaps I was the 100th person to mention this? Well totally uninterested man - make a sign?
M. B.
Go here every week, hope it stays open as long as I live in Edinburgh cos I'll keep visiting!
I. F.
absolutely fabulous venue. ....cafe good selection and service ...Great films shown that are not see in other cinemas. intimate atmosphere comfortable seating good sound quality.
G. D.
Edinburgh's best cinema. Values skilled projectionists and diligent ushers. Promotes international cinema and supports 16mm-70mm film. You won't get popcorn, but you won't stick to the carpet.
T.
Best experience I have had at the pictures for many years. The 4K digital presentation of Blade Runner: 2049 was superb. I will definitely be returning to the Filmhouse.
I. G.
The film house, I don't know where to begin, although it was my first time, they don't show movies that are in English, but also from other countries, even if you don't understand what they're saying in the movie they have subtitles on the bottom showing for those who don't understand, the vast selection of snacks is quite interesting with the drinks, although myself I prefer other snacks and drinks, it's a great place to watch a film even if it doesn't look like it that much
M. G.
It's a bit topsy-turvey, higgeldy-piggeldy. Lots of stairs up and down, though don't know if there are lifts. Cinema seats were OK, nothing to write home about. Movie was awesome - Us and Them - Roger Waters when noone else was showing it. So ok, overall.
J. B.
I didn’t know about this magnificent place prior to the international Edinburgh film festival. Now that I know it, it has become one of my favourite places to enjoy non-commercial/independent films. Great place!
S. C.
If i didn't have the great deal that is the Cineworld Unlimited Card I think i'd see all my films here. The filmhouse has a mix of new releases, foreign and more niche films as well as seasons framed around actors and directors. Prices are reasonable and there are a couple of membership/loyalty cards - a free one to collect points, and another paid for members card which offers discounts. I know a lot of people love the Cameo, but for me the Filmhouse has the edge, mainly becuase i prefer the cafe/bar here. Favourites are the nachos, hummus and the cake selection. There are usually some daily specials too.
G. U.
The Place to go if you want Independant film in Edinburgh. Bar is great if a little film studies pretentious. One to many turtle necks - but Great selection of films that should be seen.
Y. W.
Spend my winter break with this cinema. It makes me feel less depressed somehow. It's incredible.
D. M.
The place to come in Edinburgh to see screenings of independent films from all around the world. Always showing different films as well as some golden oldies too.
Amazing buzz in the place and its worth going into the café alone as it has a great atmosphere. There’s always some kind of festival of film going on at this venue and this is one of the main hubs during the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Thanks to this cinema I’ve seen some wonderful films that I would never have seen if all that was available to go to were the large commercial cinemas that have no character like Vue, Odeon and Cineworld. Very highly recommended.
N. B.
Not quite as cool as the Cameo up the road, the Filmhouse is nonetheless an essential part of Edinburgh's cinema heritage. For 11 months of the year, it's a friendly, reliable place to catch up with arthouse and foreign releases that might not get screened elsewhere (and handily, they'll often hang onto them for a week later than other cinemas too). During June, when the Edinburgh Intl Film Fest kicks it? A brilliant, buzzing atmosphere that's not to be missed.
D. R.
Good selection of indie films. Screens 2 and 3 have quite uncomfortable chairs. The bar area could be a little cleaner. Otherwise it is brilliant.
B. D.
it's not exactly atmospheric, but if you fancy a quick, tasty and relatively cheap meal, the filmhouse café may be exactly what you're looking for. (the nachos rarely disappoint, and the italian salad that accompanies the filo parcels is very filling.) drinks-wise, the café is very well stocked: there are real ales, a decent selection of wines and over 30 malt whiskies.
R. H.
Can get very busy in the evenings, with a mix of folk. The menu is varied and food is consistently good, with some amazing specials.Staff are attentive and efficient. This is a cinema cafe, so don't expect fancy furniture or designer decor.A go-to for those who love film and good grub, oh and the beer menu isn't bad either!
C. F.
A great wee independent cinema, if you like watching movies with meaning instead of the usual popcorn rubbish playing at the local multiplex!!! I have spent many a day watching old classics, documentaries and foreign movies. This place is a definite must for cinephiles.
P. D. L. N.
The Filmhouse, a non-profit company, is a fantastic three screen independent cinema showing quality films from all over the world. With knowledgeable and friendly staff, a spacious and well provided Café Bar, DVD international movies shop and free WiFi, The Filmhouse can be considered a bastion of visual arts culture in Scotland. And of course, the Relatos Salvajes/ Wild Tales movie was a 5 stars tongue-in-cheek dark comedy treat. The Filmhouse is place to go, over and over again.
F. M.
Great cinema, which avoids Hollywood and focuses on various other styles. Many film festivals around the year, focusing on specific countries or geographic areas (e.g. Africa Film Festival), or engagement movies and documentaries (e.g. Take One Action Film Festival).
Three screens. Screen 1 is the biggest one and quite classy. Screens 2 and 3 are smaller, but still quite good.
S. R.
Having worked behind the scenes here for a good few years, I still make a point of returning as a customer. The programme offers amazing variation on the usual blockbuster business, I miss my films comps greatly. Everything is as it should be in the filmhouse. The business strives to succeed artistically and is balanced with a huge and very powerful social and environmental conscience, add to that delicious food lovingly prepared on-site and it is little wonder that the filmhouse is perennially busy and successful.
J. S.
Great to see movies not available elsewhere but the seats are very close together with not much leg room and there are a lot of heads in view, especially when it's sold out/full.
Like being on a plane really.
P. M.
Very well organised for social distancing in movie theatre and one way system in and out. Able to really relax and enjoy the movie.
I. M.
Great films, good food and drink at the bar. Parking not so hot. Some on street and a nearby multi storey for parking.
S. L.
I always absolutely adore coming here. The cinema, employees and cafe are all wonderful 💖
J. M.
Good selection of films shown here and they have a nice bar area with comfy seats, serving food, coffee and drinks.
D. S.
A great film venue, with a very good cafe - great food, great service and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend!
J. M.
I enjoyed my first visit in years. Inexpensive films and nice cafe. The staff are pleasant and helpful and I enjoyed browsing in the shop.
K. S.
Great place and location, only problem was bouncy seats. The woman along from me could not keep still so I was bounced about during the whole film
L. M.
Cinema experience is great but a weird place to wait for your film. Head elsewhere for pre or post screening nibbles and drinks.
F. W.
Good cinema. Comfortable seats, well decorated and approachable staff. Good range of films; caters for art house/film festival type films.
M. P.
Great to be back in a cinema! Very friendly helpful people as always. Covid protocols thorough. Cafe great.
P. S.
Really enjoyed the Norwegian film Ninjababy and the same subsequent interview.
A. E.
Nice little cinema, restaurant and bar. Great independent films usually on and often showing different film seasons. Bar has a good selection of ales.
W. M.
The only place to watch classics old and new while keeping your money local. Running the latest releases often getting the 80mm exclusives, really a home of cinema in Edinburgh.
T. S.
Great cinema for film lovers. Clear screens and comfy seats and good prices for members.
R. S.
Lovely independent cinema with a superb bar. Check out the food too! Note that this isn't part of the Picturehouse chain so I couldn't use the Picturehouse ticket vouchers I had.
B. W.
A really nice art house cinema. Shows a wide variety of non-mainstream films. Has a nice bar/ restaurant. Would recommend.
S. D.
It is friendly, there's a cafè that sells delicious food and caters for food allergy sufferers. Very popular place to see films.
T. B.
Film houses often shows films that can not be seen anywhere else in Edinburgh. It also hosts different film festivals. Bar/café is ok for waiting for your film.
K. M.
Lovely cafe. Great food. Fairly basic cinema theatres but has a bohemian arty feel.
A. K.
My favourite Edinburgh cinema. Does great work in regards to film representation and diversity. Excellent cafe, as well.
A.
Good place for films that don't make the multiplex's. Nice bar with food. Can get busy at the weekend.
D. “. E.
Great little venue, very arty cafe bar incorporated for food and drinks. Staff are friendly and the seating is comfortable.
j.
Decent seats, great selection of art films. Cafe is excellent if a bit spendy (they are a charity, though).
c. h.
Outlaw/King.
Sold out, packed screen.
Could use a bigger screen and a longer run.
Such a beautifully shot film deserves to be on the biggest screen you have...
L. G.
Very well organised guideline due to pandemic in place good customer service kind and helpful
D. B.
Favourite cinema in Edinburgh. Central. Food on offer outstanding just don't expect popcorn or nachos.
M. F.
Filmhouse is a cinema away from the massive movie places that you find in malls and big shopping centres. They have festivals and themed events that are recommended.
J. D. F. d. P. (.
I enjoy this place, very good films, a delicious cafe bar, lovely staff and cheap tickets...really enjoy so much my time there...
D.
Love this place! Very unique atmosphere and worth the slightly higher ticket prices to see curated films
V. Y.
Great films, current releases and stuff not shown at 'high street' cinemas. Good bar with food and drinks.
M. G.
Cinema 3 seats not the most comfortable but they do have lovely cakes.
R. M.
Apart from the excellent choice of art films shown here, it also has an great cafe bar restaurant with healthy options.
B. D.
Great place to view all movies. I liked the coffee shop, comfortable place before and after the show
L. K.
I was just at the Restaurant, but it was great! I love the film theme. But I would recommend the white not the brown bread :D
J. H.
I like the atmosphere and the films shown. They have a good programme the shows the upcoming films.
R. R.
Great venue for independent films and official place for the international film festival, nice coffee ☕ with multicultural atmosphere and amazing beers
R. S.
Cinemas are good, the food in the bar is good (and good beers too), but the bar itself isn't somewhere you'd go just for a drink, the atmosphere has never been quite right for me
S. G.
Great French films!
P. C. M.
Great selection of commercial and independent films. The restaurant is pretty vast and with a good selection of food and trink.
N. C.
An old school cinema that avoids the generic trap to merely mirror it's peers, watched the release of the Nick Cave eulogy to his son and the epic Adventures of Prince Achmed to Zinc's live score - tremendous, oh and the all day Scottish breakfast - tremendous
S. D.
Always have an exciting range of films on and the ability to bring drinks from the bar/cafe into the screens is brilliant.
D. W.
A classic down to earth cinema (not a huge chain desperate to sell you overpriced sweets and drinks) good bar service, haven't sampled food but it looked good.
J. B.
Great when you need a coffee and a seat in the middle of the buisy times And maybe catch a movie to. Coffee and a cake reasonable prices
G. A.
Good, simple, tasty food if you're in a hurry. And the freshly squeezed orange juice is superb.
W. G.
Edinburgh Filmhouse Cafe Bar. Nice selection of food and drinks in a casual relaxed setting. Good choice of films too!

L. C.
It's great to see a filmhouse survive and remain firm in its intent to offer only quality cinema! I always rely on this venue for European films
A. R.
It has a wide selection of films, new ones, indie, classics and for children. Some screens are bigger than others and they have lifts for the upper floors.
鱼.
There are so many good artist movies here. If you are not interested into those " funny" movie in normal cinemas, it is the best place for you.
D. F. (.
Staff were rude, far too hot and stuffy in the cinema - but I really enjoyed the film. Worth the money, but can be better
R. F.
Comfortable three screen cinema affording excellent cinema going experience (particularly cinema 1) with intelligent programming of quality films across a wide range of genres.
S. B.
Filmhouse is one of the best cinemas/cafe in Edinburgh, the country and the world!
J. K.

S. M.
A great local cinema specialiing in independent, art house and seasonally scheduled films. Nice homemade food in the cafe.

J. G.
Second best cinema in Edinburgh after the Cameo. It could be improved with decent seating and proper air conditioning.
P. W.
Superb venue but cafe is mad expensive, £2 for a small bottle of water is a tad weighty so see it as a donation to the support of the Film house
J. C.
Went up to see Nae Pasaran. A film about Chilean aero engines that were blacked in RR in EK. This happened when I worked there.
A. g.
A little run down as a movie theatre but the voice of movies to watch is always extremely good and well away from American blockbusters
T. E.
All cinemas are pretty much the same, but this one has a little more character at least.
M. S. M.
I was at the restaurant the other day . They have a wide range of drinks and food. A good place to chat with your friens.
