J. E.With a queue outside it was hard to resit the temptation. During the short wait for our table, the staff was very welcoming and offered us complimentary green tea. Once seated, we ordered the takoyaki, prawn tempura, steak ramen & the black tonkotsu which was the perfect amount for two. With the bold & authentic flavours we now can’t wait to try the rest of their menu and other locations around Edinburgh. Highly recommend!

I was pleased to know they offered takeaway so I still managed to see most of Edinburgh. I particularly enjoyed the open style kitchen which kept me entertained whilst waiting for my food. Highly recommend this place when visiting Edinburgh if you want a relaxed and welcoming environment and to treat yourself to yummy ramen. The broth was packed with flavour together with crispy pork and cucumber, the silky egg acting as the cherry on top. We were also introduced to their mochi - which was a great ending for our meal.

M.Love the place! Gives a homey vibe with friendly staff. I had to wait a bit for a table but still worth it! I was offered free tea for waiting and they offered to hang my coat after giving me a table. The food was lovely!! Deffo would recommend trying their Chicken Katsu Curry!!!

The waitress was very accommodating in recommending their most popular vegan dishes: yasi gyoza, edamame & vegan curry udon. I couldn’t have been happier with my experience here and I hope more restaurants become equally as inclusive. Absolutely delicious, I’ll be back again.
S. B.Maki & Ramen Southside is an authentic Japanese sushi bar situated within a 5-minute walk of Edinburgh's Royal Mile. With its distinctive exterior and working ramen noodle workshop on display to passersby, it's hard not to get drawn into the restaurant to dine under the beautiful lanterns!
On arrival, we were encouraged to sanitise our hands and keep our face masks on whilst moving through the restaurant (the new normal!). With social distancing measures in place, each table had it's own COVID friendly perspex screen which allowed us to feel more comfortable and even added an element of intimacy to our evening (also helping to hide our lack of chopstick abilities from the other more experienced diners!).
Being new to Japanese cuisine, our challenge was deciding how much food would be too much to eat! So, after getting some advice from our waitress, we settled on 1 Ramen, 3 sides, and 10 pieces of sushi (to share of course!). We ordered the Beef Tataki Ramen, Pork Gyoza Dumplings, Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki, Chicken Katsu & Cucumber Tokoyo Roll, and lastly, the Grilled Eel Nigiri! With everything tasting so different to what we're used too, it's almost impossible for us to pick a favourite dish, however, the dish that we were both surprised by the most was the Grilled Eel Nigiri - incredible!
Whether you're looking for sushi, freshly made in their sushi bar and kitchen, or a bowl of ramen with homemade noodles made daily in their in-house workshop, you're guaranteed to experience a dish that is not only fresh but straight from the heart of the chefs who created it.

It felt like it was slow cooked to perfection and then grilled to get a crispy side. The texture was amazing. Soft Boiled egg were in perfect consistency. The toppings goes really well with the ramen too. Highly recommended. Service was brilliant, staff were friendly and helpful. There were like 30 seat in spaces so might have queue a bit when it is peak time. I went at around 8.30pm and there wasn't any queue which is great, although they ran out of chicken at the time. Really hope that they will open up branches in England as well! Amazing experience. Highly recommended.

I ordered a tonkotsu ramen, I can taste the MSG inside the broth which means they have overused it, and it’s purely being salty, the flavour is bland and lack of richness.
The noodles’ texture reminds me the instant noodles, when they come with the MSG broth it doesn’t really taste like any proper ramen

We expected for the fourth plate to start eating all together. D. M.Having been to Japan and tasted tonkotsu ramen in the city it was invented in I have a high benchmark on which other ramen is judged against.
The black garlic tonkotsu here I feel is one of the better iterations I’ve tried in the UK. The broth is rich without being greasy, I feel it could be a tad richer for my taste, but that is a personal opinion. The taste is certainly very good.
My noodles were quite firm which I very much appreciate and is something many ramen places in the UK don’t do so it was a nice surprise.
The pork was tasty, soft and not too fatty.
My wife’s “hell ramen” was spicy without being overbearing and the broth was fresh and vibrant and surprisingly light.
Nice touch to have Ramune to drink and at a reasonable price too.
Overall very good and I would revisit should I be in the area again and hungry for a bowl of ramen.

L. D.Came here April 25/2022, looked up on google, said it was closed. Walked by and was surprised that it was not. Scotland has been amazing, but being Scottish born, but Canadian raised, my tastebuds have been pleasured with nostalgia, but not with too many new flavours.
This place, by chance, was open and gave us exactly what we were looking for. I love flavour but not too much heat and the black tonkotau ramen was perfect, for my fiancé he loved the hell ramen which had too much heat for me….but was good for a few tastes. My 13 year old chose a couple starters edamame beans and gyoza and he loved them. Definitely recommend.
