Reviews of Pleasance Courtyard
D. R.
Great place to visit during the Fringe, so much going on, lots of different stages and areas to visit.
Great outdoor seating with lots of shade, really diverse shows so something for everyone. We warched Eh up me Flowers, the story of Charlie Williams, so interesting, loved it
It has the best atmosphere, a really nice space to soak up the Edinburgh Fringe.
W. G.
Incredible Venue!
Recently visited during The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the whole things is extremely well organised and got to see some amazing shows including, Closure, Police Cops, Mark Watson.
Decided to head back up before the Festival is over as I didn’t get to see as much as I wanted.
S. C.
One of the major party hubs for the fringe, best visited when it’s rocking after dark.
Spent rather too much time here, chatting over a few libations with friends, performers, and random festival goers.
If you like this, you’ll also like George Street, which is pedestrianised and filled with open air bars for the duration, also Bristo and George Square.
So much fun!
T.
Brilliant atmosphere, good quick service from helpful bar staff. Venues were tight, which made for a brilliant buzz. Great little extra bar through the tunnel was awesome!
The toilets were lacking in numbers but who can ever say there was enough for everyone?
A. F.
My first time at the Pleasance during the festival. The atomphere is superb. The aroma of food being prepared is extremely 'pleasant'. Each venue is well signposted making it an excellent place to spend the day chilling, stuffing your face with a variety of delicacies and taking in as many shows as you can.
Brilliant day out.
M. D.
Always a buzz place but not enough variety of food. Drink - no problem. If you like people watching and listening to folk presenting their shows, then this the place to be. The actual shows are varied and good fun and great for impetuous decisions!
M. E.
At the heart of Edinburgh's Fringe, Pleasance Courtyard combines culturally rich entertainment with decent street food & beer to create a unique urban festival. It is quite pricey however - a night out here will set you back a pretty penny! This is the embodiment of hospitality's new normal ...
H. T.
Courtyard buildings look amazing. Festival time so plenty of atmosphere, places to eat or drink. Also lots of shows and free impromptu music from groups demonstrating their talents.
R. P.
One of my favorite venues during fringe 2022. It is a bit off center, less crowded, clean, with easy access to the box office, plenty of vendors for drinks and food and great seating accommodations.
C. B.
Arguably the main hub of the Fringe.
Even in the rain punters turned out for all the shows and the all the staff and volunteers were super helpful and couldn't do anymore.
Kidzone was a really good idea especially the crafting tent that kept our 4+6 year occupied for a couple of hours.
N. L.
Busy place ,lots of shows going on all the time, been coming for over 25 yrs ,always mobbed
C. W.
Visited this place during the Fringe festival. It had lots of a food and drinks places, it was quite busy. We got caught in the rain so it was nice to shelter here. Good access to toilets here.
K. F.
Very relaxed with great options of food stalls and bars to choose from. So even though busy, nothing seemed to over crowded. Problem with the tills on Saturday 6th which meant couldn't serve for a while but was taken in good humour by the many thirsty patrons. These things happen.
K. F.
Previously a fringe virgin, I'm a total convert...not that I was anti but it was wonderful. Sat feeling mega festivalish and relaxed. OK the queuing system possibly needs a rethink or just more communication but the atmosphere was great and the show we saw very funny
S. W.
Saw my granddaughter aged 4 ,!and the staff were very helpful and explained about the show and experience of the youngsters very good .
M. M.
This is one of the main venues for the Edinburgh Fringe festival. It has multiple venues and halls of various sizes. Usually homes the more famous and established comedians and shows usually sell out quickly. Early booking advised for shows.
The courtyard has plenty of drinking options and some seating outside and bars inside too
D. S.
Functional stage areas erected for the Edinburgh Fringe I assume. The place otherwise operates as University accommodation for the rest of the year. Plenty of bars and sufficient cafes to keep the hoards of tourists refreshed during the Fringe Festival in August.
I. T.
Nine Conti was brilliant and was a worthwhile purchase of ticket prices to see her. However, venue was disappointing as the tills were not working and no drinks could be bought. Eventually we managed to get a drink, but no beer available
J. A.
Went during fringe. Seats are a bit wonky but cover, ambience were nice. Food and drink on the steeper side, but no more than the rest of Fringe or considering inflationary pressures.
D. L.
Visited a few times for Fringe shows. An easy place to find and quite central. Has a number of bars and drinks were allowed into the performances.
M. R.
Went for the fringe. My partner hadn't ever been before and she loved it. The atmosphere was as good as I remembered and the shows we saw were excellent.
N. S.
Great crowd. Enjoyed the ambience. "Some" staff at the Fringe really didn't wanted people to be there at all 😢 They hated people with Passion 😂
P. B.
Really like the atmosphere on the courtyard, and the variety of large and small rooms/acts in the complex - can easily spend a full day just going from one show to the next here :)
R. C.
Pleasance was fine as a venue. Plenty of help to direct you round the rabbit warren of venues. Difficult to separate it from the show that you'll see. Slightly lacking in the edge and atmosphere it used to have and that you get in smaller venues.
D. W.
Great range of venues for the fringe, although there are so many it can take a while to work out where you're going and where the queue is!
A. H.
Great place to see some of the best shows in the Festival but also have a few drinks and partake of some of the plethora of food stalls with a very diverse choice of food available.
M. G.
Spent some time here whilst out for the festival. Great variety of good and drink options available.
R. W.
Great atmosphere, great beer and food available at good prices. The whole venue is well managed with show timings and queue management well planned.
J. C.
Great shows. Good quick bar service. Plenty of friendly staff to direct you to shows.
S. J.
Friendly staff.
P. P.
Great hub of entertainment during the festival fringe. But remember you will get stung at the bars for the price of drinks.
N. H.
Excellent comedy venue at the heart of the Fringe, wide array of rooms for shows plus good bars and food stalls. Good for comedy minor celeb spotting.
N. T.
This was my first visit to the Pleasance and as part of the fringe it's a great place to meet up and socialise before a show.
G. D.
I love this courtyard for festival vibes. If you hang out from early doors there is always the chance of a free show or 2 🤞
C. M.
Comfortable seating but packed in like sardines. Need to disturb entire row to go to loo. Everyone has to stand up.
d. h.
Great at Edinburgh Fringe festival great actd including Chris Turner seen him for past 5 years and a now a mate of mine
G. H.
We weren't even going to see a show, and it was a chilled, fun place to grab a drink and some food.
T. B.
Love this place gor atmosphere, shows and bumping into the odd celebrity... we saw the Lost Voice Guy just hanging out in the courtyard
d. f.
Great set up for Fringe. Better ventilation in some of the venues could give a better experience
G. M.
Great location to enjoy the EdFringe festival. Good atmosphere and variety of eateries and bars.
J. W.
Great atmosphere, drink isn't too expensive and lots of amazing acts to choose from
H. C.
Great atmosphere during Edinburgh Festivsl, plenty bars and food stalls songsmith many venues.
p. r.
Good lively crowd and good stand up comedy presented by Sidhu V. It's nice show we enjoyed
C. L.
Great venue. Decent food and drink well protected from the inevitable rain.
D. C.
Always end up here when at the fringe. Was also relatively clean during binman strike as in university grounds and they have own cleaning staff
M. D.
Been coming here for years for the festival , entertainment always good. Food (especially) and drink way too expensive
A. M.
Lovely little place with a thriving atmosphere.
S. J. S.
Great atmosphere during the fringe. Great choice of shows, food and drint
I. H.
Amazing space lovely chilled atmosphere
M. W.
Perfect for people watching during the festival. The burgers are fabulous as well
I. C.
Not so busy during the week, well set up with a number of bars.
I. O.
Well known venue for the Edinburgh Fringe, saw a good show, didn't eat or drink anything, but I was impressed with how they had set it all up for covid, within the open air courtyard setting. They even bring you drinks during the show, I noticed, which is nice if you want one, slightly distracting of you don't! Fairly accessible in terms of entry and getting to your seat, but I didn't see a disabled toilet facility, though could have missed it, so check it out in advance of you need that.
G.
Staff and venue child friendly even in fringe crowds.even had a kids arts area
E. M.
Great festival shows but as expected, outrageous prices for pretentious food.
A. C.
A great place to hang out and find a show or share table and a chat.
D. S.
Great atmosphere, pleasant staff, wide range of drinks and food.
R. M.
Great spot for a beer on a summer's day. I recently attended the Cymera book festival here. Was a good venue for it.
S. G.
Great vibe and fun place to be before a show.
M. E.
Vibrant, plenty choice for food & drink during the festival
N. L.
Really good place especially for fringe festival
B. T.
Very busy place but very well organised.
Staff are very friendly and helpful
C. R.
Great Vibe!! Full of Scotish locals sprinkled with Global visitors 🫂❤️👌
C. I.
Tim Vine gig - literally laugh a minute! Quality comedy, just the tonic needed 😂
B. S.
Great place during the Fringe, as always.
N. S.
Really cool venue, lots of stages with different places to eat and drink all in one. Very solid varied set of acts, though I'm not sure if that's also the case outside of the Fringe. I would like better signage and organisation for some of the more popular shows, had to nearly do a full loop to find my entrance
Z. R.
Excellent venue, great shows
N. T.
Great location for lots of fringe shows
A. S.
One of the few fringe venues where it's worth just going to hang out even when you don't have anything booked, and home to much of the best comedy at the festival. Plenty of bars but could do with more food option in future festivals.
E. W.
Was here for Hazel O'Connor ( she was totally amazing, down to earth a great performer and engaged with the audience) Cafe & bar in this venue spacious prices for good food was lovely. Upstairs where we had the concert was nice but cold so I recommend you keep your coat on . Sitting as spotted but not very comfortable. Staff were all lovely so overall the experience was very good.
E. R.
Awesome play . 20 minutes of action.
Well organised
L.
Visited to see some Fringe performances, all of which were very funny. The Pleasance has an array of mini venues, along with pop up bars and food stalls. It is extremely well organised with very helpful staff and clear signs to help you find your correct destination.
A. J.
We were here for some shows, beers and food for the festival. It was fantastic had a great time. The location is good, the way the courtyard is done up is really cool. There was a good choice of Czech beer which was good and it was so easy to go and see some shows. Super organized, well organized - I'll definitely return next year 👍
R. S.
Visited in August 2016 during Fringe Festival. There were plenty of beers and ciders on tap so I never had to worry about getting a drink. There weren't many food options however the food available was very tasty. Despite having a large crowd lined up for various shows the courtyard handled the all day rush with ease. The theme and colorfulness of the signs and decorations were a nice touch.
R. R.
There are many shows here during the Fringe so it's good as a hub. Individual spaces vary some good some dank. Food options are getting better but can still be improved. Staff are great.
S. O.
A really busy vibrant place at the Edinburgh Fringe.
S. H.
Best venue for festival shows.
P. H.
Great venue with the best Fringe shows on the Fringe. 👍
D. C.
A great festival venue with so much going on. You could stay here all day and just go to the shows on offer. There is a courtyard with seating and food outlets. The staff are very helpful. There is always a buzz here, and they normally have some of the best comedy talent doing shows.
D. S.
I was part of an event (secrets of seafood) as part of the Edinburgh science festival so can only comment from that aspect. It's a cool venue the hall we were in was well lit and suited to different kinds of event. However the Pleasance can be a bit of a labyrinth and it can be easy to get a bit disoriented. As a venue it is good though and the people working there are lovely, the green room space was much appreciated and can understand why it is a good place to perform at.
G. S.
Sindu V was excellent. Excellent, intimate venue.
S. C.
Been working on more Fine Art Paintings as well......Perhaps work on more of my Artwork and Music Compositions while visiting Scotland......
Subscribe to my YouTube Channel: The Stas Cooper Channel which features all of my Original Music which I composed and my other endeavors......
Cheers
T. W.
Loverly day /afternoon for sitting drinking in the heart of the festival
Y. F.
The courtyard is one part of the Pleasance venues (other being the Domes). Lots of rooms with an eclectic mix of fringe shows. There's food and drink stands. I especially liked the addition of a craft beer bar this year. Good amount of space to sit down in between shows too.
M. P.
Saw 2 great Fringe shows here - 1 pre-booked and 1 we just fancied on the evening. Staff couldn't have been more helpful with ensuring we got good access despite my lesser mobility. The wide variety of food and drink was priced similarly to other Fringe venues
L. R.
Great gig, but missed the end to catch my bus. Start time was 45 mins later than advertised. Really slow service at the bar. Auditorium was cold for sitting a long time. Liked the seats; comfier than most theatres.
J. M.
As a fringe venue, you can be pretty sure that the acts here are good quality. Expect massive queues, but well organised - if you think you've found the back, odds are a yellow-clad staff member will scuttle up to shoo you to the back of the tertiary queue 50 feet away. Don't bother with the food, there's better stuff nearby.
S. P.
Great Food & Drinks and Great Staff and Ambience
L. J.
There is nothing like the Pleasance Courtyard at Fringe time. The place buzzes, with lots of pop up bars, eating places and people. There is a wide variety of performance spaces, from intimate bars to a very large theatre. Often you can see and speak to the artists who perform, and the range of shows is terrific.
s. d.
University theatre and cabaret bar, very good drink prices. Big screen TVs for sports. Set up for musicians and plays. Very busy during the festival month. Decent pizzas and nachos.
S. P.
Not much you can really say about Pleasance that probably hasn't already been said. I don't think you will have properly experienced the Fringe without a visit to Pleasance. You could stay there all week and not run out of things to see, people to meet and food and drink to enjoy. A great venue.
J. W.
At Fringe time the Pleasance Courtyard is buzzing. It's a great atmosphere and any excellent place just to hang out even if you're not going to a show. I reckon within ten minutes of arriving you'd be queuing at the box office though! You may even spot a famous face but in Edinburgh in August that's entirely normal!
G. T. (.
While the Festival is on this a great place to celebrity spot or catch a show. Drinks and food are pricey but that's to be expected.
It can be very busy and if you're spending the day festivaling don't spend too much time here.
A. M.
Always busy during the fringe , so depending on your mood either a good buzz or a bit of a squash! Plenty of staff to guide you to the multiple venues that exist here which is its best feature - opportunity to see multiple shows one after the other! Can't think of a year I haven't been to the pleasance during the festival for exactly that reason.
M. M.
Your Edinburgh Fringe Festival experience isn't complete without at one visit to the Pleasance. Always has a varied selection of shows, something for all ages & tastes. Quirky array of venues of all sizes scattered around the courtyard. But, especially at this time of year the courtyard's biggest draw would be the opportunity to sit back with a drink & a snack - good selection of bars & eateries also here - and soak up the atmosphere!!
T. S.
Lovely place to go to during Edinburgh fringe. Can't comment what it is like outside of the fringe but looked a nice leafy part of Edinburgh! Warning, it's at the top of a hill but not insurmountable by any means. Great acts seen here and great facilities and helpful staff!
C. M.
One of my favourite venues during the fringe festival with plenty of bars, shows and comedians on. Always a good atmosphere with large parasols providing good shelter when it does decide to rain
V. W.
I visited during the beginning of the festival with the buzz of the month to come in every nook and cranny. There were several performances throughout the day of every genre and I particularly enjoyed some of the more intimate venues, especially for performance poetry. 1-3 of August were good for preview tickets (much cheaper than the full price tickets) and the odd free ticket for a top notch show. Take a chance and see some fresh new talent - often as good as or even better than the more established performers. Chat to the lovely young men and women promoting the shows.
N. O.
I fell in love with the Pleasance courtyard the first time I visited nearly 20 years ago. But now it is actually better. This is because the food outlets are finally what I need them to be. Pizza and grilled meats. The wine has improved as well
M. J. I. H.
Ground zero for comedy during the Edinburgh Fringe, open in July & August only. Differs year by year, but seems to get better: offering more food & drink choices and extending a canopy over open doors. And there's gigs to go see too.
N. L.
Needs a few more decent food options
A. B.
It's the Edinburgh Festival and one of the best venues location. Have seen loads this year including Electrolyte, Rhys James, Nigel Ng, Boar. Love it. Good bars, great atmosphere.
J. M.
Great atmosphere- buzzing with people, food, booze and any number of performances. Everything from children's theatre to cutting edge comedy and drama. Open from very early to very late.
P. P.
Visited to see a live podcast (Guilty Feminist) at the Fringe. Large auditorium, seats were sufficiently tiered (i.e. raised above the rows in front) such that everyone could see comfortably above the people in front. Seating around the edges was angled appropriately. Seemed to be a major lack of toilets (could be partially improved by making them gender neutral).
J. H.
Wonderful place during the Festival
J. W.
A warren of some of the best fringe venues
A. J.
Just the best Fringe venue!!!!
s. m.
Victim of its own success in a way as Edinburgh fringe shows here tend to be so popular that they sell out and are hard to get tickets for if you get a spontaneous notion you'd like to see something. Well organised venue.
J. L.
Great vibe in here during the Fringe.
J. S.
Great entertainment during Fringe
E. C.
Fab events space at the heart of the fringe. A host to multiple spaces of differing sizes where you can see both new and established comedy acts, before grabbing a drink and a bit to eat in the courtyard.
T. M.
Awesome interior, completely transforms on Saturdays for the Big Cheese
D. S.
The Pleasance is where I always recommend people go if they haven't been to the Fringe before. There's always a buzz and plenty going on, so you don't need to think too hard about what you're going to see. You can just go into the courtyard beer garden, soak up the atmosphere, and pick from whatever happens to be on.
F. M.
Great as always....Edinburgh fringe is awesome!!!!
B. G.
The Pleasance, the name given to an Edinburgh University building when it is used by The Pleasance Theatre company during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is one on the entrainment hubs during the Fringe. Not far from the High Street /Royal Mile, easy to walk to. There is a wide range of shows on offer, something for all ages and tastes. Best to book ahead as the shows usually sell well. Food outlets/catering are really limited and are mostly snack bar/burger vans. They are typically not cheap.
All in it's worth a visit if there is a show that you want to see.
I. V.
Nice hang-out with many options for cocktails, wines and beers before a performance. Great service and cleaning crews keep the venue sparkling like my prosecco.
R. S.
Visited varies parts whilst in Edinburgh for 'Fringe' event. Lovely place. Pricey booze. Very popular and Phil Jupitas passed through!
C. C.
Central Edinburgh Fringe venue. Expect queues and crowds. On the plus side, it's under cover and there are good food and drink options. Assuming you don't like salads...
M. R.
Not been for a few years. Catering much better and more convenient. Ticketing better organised ...but dreadfully elitist clientele which is initially amusing but easily morphs into being very stressful. Probably never going back.
A. B.
Excellent collection of intimate venues for shows during the Fringe. Generally run like a finely tuned military operation as good natured and helpful Fringe staff manage thronging crowds.
J. M.
This was a great venue in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. There was plenty of food options and it was very vibrant. However, the staff used plastic cups.
S. K.
A collection of amazing Fringe venues. Always well set up and a family friendly courtyard. One of our favourite spots in August.
S. G.
Did a show called unspoken by bravo 22 company had a great time and met many fantastic people ,could have better access for wheelchair users as it's cobbled and the lift broke twice but the staff were amazing and still managed to get the disabled members of the cast upstairs using manual chairlifts big shout to Paul the security guy he was great
N. M.
Great venue during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Multiple stages here so always something going on (all ticketed but there is a vox office on site). Multiple bars with outside space (but also shelter as this is Scotland). Food available from burgers to dogs to falafel.
J. F.
Bright and lively place to meet and socialise during the festival.
A.
A very pleasant venue. Enjoyed the show I saw at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Only complaint is that it seemed to rain the entire time I was in Scotland.
D. M.
Still one of the better Fringe venues. This year they had a great craft beer range, I hope they keep that up, it accounts for at least one of the stars!
B. L.
Lovely courtyard area and bars/food stalls outside. Only complaint is the heat in the venue (pleasance 2) was unbearable. Far to hot, needs some air conditioning or better air flow.
S. b. t.
Fringe venues and bars aplenty here.
E. M.
Went to c brave Macbeth it is advertised as a kids show but as a senior citizen I thought it was excellent and very funny no I've not got dementia with only 8 young players they were brilliant funny and they interacted with the audience superbly if u r at the fringe please go to it and support these young actors u will not be disappointed
A.
Just visiting the courtyard for the atmosphere and as always to find out what price Guinness will be next year in the rest of Edinburgh. Hence 3 not 5 stars. Not different to the other Uni venues.
W.
Fantastic varied venue for the fringe festival, much bigger on the inside than it appears. Saw red shoes by young Pleasance theatre, wonderful show.
A. G.
A great place during the Edinburgh Fringe. It could do with more toilets though.
J. K.
Visit to here to see a dance show. The newer bistro/bar area looking great. The actual theatre could do with upgrading.
Parking a nightmare in and around surrounding area.
P. C.
This is a fabulous old building, the snug bar is perfect but slight minus point for no draught bitter, bottles in stock though, came during the fringe so everything very well organised, would like to pop back to see this building naked as it were
s. m.
Great shop full of fantastic material and all the things that you need to go with it,, very helpful staff,, always smiling and ready to help.
T. P. (. T. R. F.
The shows here are superb! I went here at the time of the Edinburgh Fringe and saw Romeo and Juliet, Michael Morpurgo's Kensuke's Kingdom and several others, all of which I found very entertaining and enjoyable.
H. S.
Good venue well organised
T. R.
Saw Shappi Khorsandi here recently. Good size venue - intimate without being too much so. Stairs are very steep, and the decor in the actual dome has seen better days. I assume it is only used as a venue during the Fringe as everything in the room seemed a bit temporary. Staff very efficient.
I. B.
Impressed with the modern feeling to the architecture and decor at the entrance, box office, café bar etc but still retaining the original facade on the street, the auditorium is old fashioned but perfectly acceptable and fit for purpose, coming to see other bands in due course and looking forward to it, also the staff we encountered were all really nice, friendly and helpful.
J. K.
Nice little theatre. Really comes alive during the Edinburgh Festival, when it becomes the hub for a series of comedy venues, in addition to getting outfitted with an outdoor bar.
Only a five minute walk from here to the Grassmarket/ Cowgate area of town.
A. R.
Quiet this year for the Fringe but the same great service as in previous years. Lots of seating and food & drink available.
S. B.
One of the iconic comedy venues at the Fringe. Pity some of the character, such as posters covering the stairs was lost in renovations a few years ago.
P. G.
A great Fringe venue, perfect for relaxing away from the mayhem of the Courtyard. Some great venues (notably Queen Dome) and large clean (and modern!) bathrooms.
M. R.
One of the main hubs of the Fringe. Always a buzzy atmosphere, reasonably priced food and great for live reviews of the shows by the actors themselves!
D.
Great venue for the fringe
3. N. M.
Iconic performance venue. comes to life during Edinburgh Fringe with many performance spaces and a lively food and drink place.
L.
Interesting venue for the Fringe. Lots of different areas within the same area some hot and small, some huge with tiny little seats and no leg room.
J. D.
Plenty of outside facilities - big screen, entertainment small marquee, food options and bar options. Interior space was too dark.
Some drink prices were a little steep.
P. D.
Lucy Porter: Consequences
Lucy Porter: Consequences Pleasance Forth 17:30 Tickets £14 (2 for 1)
Lucy Porter packed the house out with her latest outing in Edinburgh, she brought on a hostess trolley with a bottle of sherry which she duly offered to a returning audience member whom she recognised, she starts immediately talking about her hugely tall husband and massive kids and joked about now the kitchen chemicals are now out of her reach. She intertwines current events with the past and future with her “letter to herself” monologues which with its cultural references hits the mark every time, you can tell she was a journalist. Her worrying about us all turning right wing in our old age due to being too tired hit a chord with a few people but she asserted We must listen to the youth today to understand what issues they feel engaged about this in turn will keep us more active politically or it was a way for her to run off with a 16 year old at the end of the show I hope she is gentle with him. Coroners rating: 5 stars A must see
B. B.
Vibrant and lively. You could almost stay all day.
Only problem is I feel the drinks are a little too expensive. But I suppose it's the Fringe so what do you expect?
H. S.
Great atmosphere with great food
S. P.
I saw many great gigs here during the fringe. Good signage. Really tasty falafel stall. Frequent plaques verify an illustrious heritage.
L. W.
Visited as part of the Edinburgh Fringe, saw Paul Mertons show. Very lively area with plenty of places to eat and drink.
A. R.
Always worth a few visits over the Festival period, even when not doing a show, where 'spot the stand-up comedian' is just as entertaining
T. H.
Great venue. We've seen several shows and all have been good. Food is good too.
N. M.
Great place during the festival. Atmosphere is happy upbeat. A great place to hang out even if not attending a show.
M. W.
The place to be during the Edinburgh Comedy Festival. Talk to people to find good shows. Gets very busy so book ahead.
H. T.
Busy place. Great entertainment on. Got to visit a pre show, was a fab night. Good food and drinks available at a reasonable price
I. M.
It's the Festival, what's not to love? Good bars, good shows, good food, great atmosphere. Can be a little pricey, but it's Edinburgh , what do you expect??
D. S.
One of best Fringe venues: lots of food and drink options and plenty of theatre spaces. I love this place!
C. K.
Excellent venue for some great comedy. Really great place with good facilities, accessible toilets and good selection of food & drink.
C. K.
First visit to the pleasance this year for the festival and as usual, it didn't disappoint. Love the buzz about this place and the shows are great too!
R. D.
Upstairs - not easily accessible if you have mobility problems. Intimate atmosphere. Good visibility of the performers.
e. c.
It's a lovely space just not particularly well sign posted for each Theatre space.
P. R.
Went here to watch Kelly Convey - nice venue
J. M.
Brilliant fringe venue. Always has great comedy and entertainment. The food court is usually excellent.
S. B.
During The Fringe, this is the best place in Edinburgh to hang out. I've been to the rest but this is the best. Love the atmosphere. Perfect
A. D.
On some nights it feels like the home of the fringe festival. Great drinks, food and atmosphere not mention the shows! Wins all around.
D.
Vibrant and busy place during the festival. Long queues for the bars, but then so does everywhere in August.
Superb selection of venues too.
R. M.
Great at festival time.
j.
Went multiple times during the fringe festival. Fantastic, quirky venue with many shows and a lovely beer garden
T. O.
Best audience seats compared to any small venues. Sound system ok. Perfect temperature winter or summer.
J. E.
Venue for festival shows, large courtyard out of sight with many small amenities, connected to other buildings. never been in but part of local interest esp. In festival @ Aug.j.e.
A. P.
Awesome fringe venue... but was refused to be served at three different bars in the area even though I showed them my ID.
W. B.
Experiencing the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time was enhanced by the facilities at the Pleasance. Hectic but not overwhelming and staff were friendly and courteous.
A. A.
such an incredible venue, such incredible performers! you might even get to meet one in the courtyard after the show
G. C.
Friendly staff, food was good, great venue for comedy.
S.
Set in the old city part of Edinburgh it has a feel of the past with its cobbled courtyard and old buildings. Nice friendly place! Expensive though!
G. D.
Saw a festival fringe gig here which was dire. These pre paid gigs were crap compared to the "free" shows and the signage in the pleasance areas was bad so was late twice annoyingly.
D. B.
Well equipped courtyard with lots of seating, food and bars. Great choice of venues during the fringe.
J. “. w. M.
visited the courtyard. Doesn't get 5 starts because, its heavily cobbled and unsuitable for me as a wheelchair user. Seemingly, history takes precedence over common sense.
H. I.
Great friendly atmosphere
J. J.
Only been during the Fringe but was a great & well organised venue. Looking forward to going again
M. J.
Great venue. Went to see Nina Conti during the festival. It does get very congested during the festival though!
T. W.
Great food and staff. Always a favourite during the festival. The courtyard is so pretty at night.
J. T.
The shows - Brexit and Paul Merton impro friends - were good but do wish the seating density was a bit less or ventilation better.
S. M.
one of my favourite Fringe venues. great atmosphere food and wine.
R. T.
Just a money machine. Dull and depressing.
D. M. B.
Special Fringe venue AND the city wall
N. G.
Fantastic show selections and a wonderful collection of eateries. The outdoor lighting made me want to stay all night.

Nish Kumar: 'Ruminations on the Nature of Subjectivity'
Pleasance Courtyard
until 24 Aug
7.15pm
£9-£12 (£8-£10.50).
Nish Kumar returns to the Fringe for his ninth year, to a cosy venue at the Pleasance Courtyard. A total sell out for an unusually cold Tuesday August evening. Kumar explains the title of his show, 'Ruminations on the Nature of Subjectivity' - it's all about opinions and how we express them. Demonstrating this by peoples likes/dislikes of certain TV sit coms and reasons why. But Kumar does not mind if we do not find him funny, as everyone's entitled to their own opinion...
Open to that thought, Kumar proceeds to touch the topic of race, making a nod at '12 Years A Slave' and 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Makes light of the fact that being an Indian comic, racism does not bother him, as he jokes no racist is going to come and watch him, with a name like Nish Kumar, doing stand-up for an hour! His experience touring the aptly named, Isle of Whyte, was something of a surprise. Race bingo anyone? He's had many people tackle his race themes, but he seems undeterred by them and if anything it supplies him with more hilarious material!
Kumar swiftly rattles through gag after gag, leaving us barely a moment to gain our breath from laughing. His polished delivery seems effortless. What is correct race comedy he queries? And then acts an amusing sketch demonstrating the differences between Whites and Indians. Bollywood would be proud! At the age of 28, the chocolate Fraser geek, now has a girlfriend! 'A nice lady', who regnosises that he's an introvert pessimist, self centred and egotistic, all of which he entirely agrees with! As later he compliments himself, "I am very clever" after a witty comment. It all ends with his observation that Google is making us stupid, rendering us unfit to concentrate for long periods of time and being easily distracted, to which he thanks us for experiencing him in the long form. 4 stars.
j. l.
GreT cenu, good selection of eating and drinking places but could do with some cover while waiting to get into shows. Ended up soaked!
N. G.

Always nicer when the Sun's shining. Could do with more seats outside. Saw a Super Happy Sttory very well performed and emotional.

And modern toilet facilities great
Staff very good but under pressure when busy more staff or better system needed I think

Too expensive to have a drink, almost £6.00 a pint. Taking the proverbial at these venues now, all the venues charge the same. Profiteering on a grand scale.
