Reviews of Crookston Castle
N. R.
This castle is a little far out from the city centere, but it is certainly worth the trip. Entrance is free. There is no gift shop or restrooms or personnel there. The castle itself has several rooms to explore and you can go to the top of the one remaining tower. Please note that as with many castles, some areas can be difficult to reach. If you are interested in castles, I recommend this one.

Went for a wee donner round this with the kids. They loved it and ran and explored it for ages well worth a visit with loads of history boards that you can read. Better than when I was a kid a long time ago 😂. Great views from the top sadly kids didn’t manage up. Ps it’s free 👍

Incredibly well kept castle ruins. Castles are something I don't necessarily associate with Glasgow because of it's industrial backdrop so I was surprised to find one intact.
Built originally on a timber fort, the castle is free and accessible to the general public. You can climb to the top, but be aware that the last three levels to the tower's summit are only accessible by metal ladder. I thought this was awesome as I've never come across ladders as access points in historic buildings but understandably this would have been how it would have been back in the day. There's some great views from the top and there's also a dry ditch surrounding the battlements.

A fantastic Place to visit, exceptionally clean and tidy, the key keeper on site is very friendly and extremely helpful to say the least, toilets are on site making it a perfect place for a couple of hours relaxing when the weather permits, 😊😊 🏰

I loved the castle, it looks peaceful because of the vast green area around the castle. The inside part is even greater because it makes you think back in the days of the history of how they used to live, and the architecture that used to domain in that century. Therefore, it was a very good experience that I would recommend to my friends.

Just amazing!
It is totally free! Check website for open days. So very worth a visit!!! ❤️

We visited Crookston Castle because the 'Earls of Lennox' can be found in my family tree. The property is well maintained and it sits next to a residential area. Park and quietly walk up, you will notice it is surrounded by a defensive ring-ditch that dates back to the 12th century when Sir Robert de Croc, who also gave his name to the village of Crookston, built a timber and earth castle. We took our time to climb the tiny stone staircases visiting each floor and peer into the old stone bedrooms in wonder. Awesome huge living areas with massive fireplaces I adore. I hear there was more recent use of it in WWII as an observation tower because it's a great view. A Historic Scotland site, entry is free, with gates staying open til 5pm. but no restrooms or gift shop. It is beautiful and simply there. #ancestraltourism

Great little place in the heart of the city. Clean and safe. Out kids had a blast climbing the lasers and running about.
J. F.
Lovely castle with the option to be used as some sort of performance stage thanks to Council lighting, that is after the litter and smell of urine is removed
g.
The castle is open(not whilst covid19 is about)to the public from 9:30 am till 5 pm (last entry 4:30pm) every day of the week through summer, winter opening hours are 9:30am till 4 pm (last enrty3:30) closed Thursday Friday, its free all year round.
if you're brave enough to go all the way to the top you'll get an idea of what it would've been like to be at the top of a castle on a hill 500 years ago before all the houses were built just bring your imagination.
Probably the best freebie in the Scotland.

I haven't been inside Crookston Castle since the mid-1960s, but it won't have changed since then! As for the "beer cans lying around & smell of urine", surely people are employed to clean the place? It says (below) something about buying TICKETS! There wasn't any such requirement back in the mid '60s!

Absolutely enjoyed visiting crookston castle . Enjoyed the panoramic view from top . Very well maintained by the council .
S.
Great views from the top. Well maintained for public access 👌
M. L.
Don't expect much and you'll not be disappointed. I wouldn't make a special trip there but treat it as pit stop. Max half an hour to visit only rewarding thing is the view from the tower plus entry is free
A. H.
Not a lot to see the site has been let down a little. But still interesting.

Visiting Crookston Castle gave me a real sense of what it must have been like living in a Medieval castle. The top gives a great strategic view of the surrounding area and the small climb there has dark narrow stairways. Absolutely worth a visit and there are some signs to read for some historical information.
T. J.
Absolutely loved the views! Was not expecting the good condition of the castle!

Crookston castle surprised me. For years I viewed it from a distance, thinking it was to ruined to offer much. I quickly changed my mind when I got up close and went in. The castle used to have four towers, but Mons meg blew away the other three. The remaining tower is far higher than I had thought. There is plenty to see at crookston castle, don't miss out.
N. T.
Nice tourist attraction. The view from the top is nice too.
R.
Great views and local knowledge of the area. Located right next to rosshill park for an extended walk. Some litter and graffitti that detracts from the natural beauty.
A. W.
Peaceful ruined castle set in parkland just off Brockburn Road in South West Glasgow dating from 16th century where it was probably quite an imposing defensive fortification dominating the area round about in what would still be the Kingdom of Scotland
g. m.
A lesser known hidden gem in Glasgow
M. S.
Recently took an American friend here and it was their favourite castle we visited. There's not much of it left but what's there is structurally sound allowing visitors to ascend through the rooms in the tower all the way to the roof.
There are plaques around explaining the rooms and giving background on the castle.
A. H.
These are really good castle ruins, but there is quite a lot still to investigate. It keeps going up and up and the views from the top are superb. Interesting history too. Don't forget to take a camera.
C. D.
It is a bit of a ruin but we'll worth a visit
g.
Absolute hidden gem. Better preserved than a lot castles I've visited. Free to explore. You can go all the way to the top (via steep metal stairs) but well with the climb. Amazing view from the top.
C. H.
Great views from the top. A little difficult to get to the top. Stairs are almost like ladders. But its a great adventure. Some part can be dark. Lots of information/history to read. Enjoyed our visit and tgeres the river walk amd park near by.
1. S. 1.
Nice to look at or on top of also learn about the local history.
J. W.
Great old castle on the edge of Glasgow, worth a climb up to spot any enemy aircraft, or just take in the view!
T. V.
A very beautiful castle! It is well maintained and there are many information boards there. You will see the unique original moats around the castle. And if you get there on a clear day, you will enjoy the magnificent views from the top of the castle with Campsie Fells and Trossachs in the distance - have a binocular on you! It could be challenging or impossible for some people to climb the ladders to get to the top - yet the casstle is still worth seeing!

This is an interesting wee castle, it's on a small site atop a slight mound and if you dare climb the narrow stairs/ladder the endless views from the top are stunning.
Free on street parking near the site, and free toilets on site.
b. b.
The castle gives you a taste of how life was like so long ago.
The hall, the curved staircase, mind boggles, how on earth did Mary , Queen of Scots, come down these steps in big dresses.
The view from the top is breathtaking.
-. -. R.
Good old relic in the heart of a city unspoiled . Free to roam until the gate shuts.
A. P.
I used to climb this castle way back in the early 1950's when my sister ,her husband and family moved to Pollock when it was first built, They lived at 298 Linthaugh Rd, name of Coulter, they moved to South Africa 1956. it was a magical place to us, . Just over the bridge over the White cart opposite side of the castle, was an orchard belonging to what had been a kovely old house there, Looking at the map now, all the woods and open magic places have all gone.
D. K.
Everything free. beautiful place
B. A.
Ruins with one intact tower you can climb to the top of. Much of the structure is very intact and the ruins are well kept. Very well hidden among the dense houses.
A. A.
History in a modern built up area; amazing really you can walk right up to and around the castle. The park is quite nice and it's aw free.
S. S.
Crookston Castle is a free Castle to be enjoyed by young and old. Open between 9 am and 4pm everyday except Friday.
If you are brave enough to climb the iron ladder to the top, you will enjoy spectacular views of the City of Glasgow on a Clear day. Well worth the trek up the hill !!! .
M. P.
Oldest castle in Glasgow. Decently preserved and empty almost all the time. From the top you can have a nice view of South side Glasgow and also see the mountains to North
R. P.
I had no idea this place existed, great that it's free to go inside.
Definitely a no no if you have mobility issues. But great views from the top across Glasgow and beyond.
A. D.
The area surrounded by the old defensive ditch is a great place for a picnic with the kids. Make sure to climb to the top of the castle remains too.
孟.
The view from the top is awesome
A. M.
Hidden in plain sight this is a gem of a ruin. Whole family enjoyed exploring inside and around the castle. Fab views from the top. Highly recommended
G. G.
Use to stay across the road from this place loved playing in castle and round the grounds gr8 view from the top think it's now crossed to the public but u can still have a look round from the outside I'm sure it's wheremarry queen of Scots got the chop
m. t.
Not much left.of the castle, but its a good place to visit if you are into castle huting. The original moat is still in tact.
B. M.
Steeped in history. Fantastic panoramic views from the top. Metal ladders to climb to the open roof. Free to enter.
G. D.
Visited recently although a ruin still plenty to explore view from the top of the Castle is worth the climb with sturdy metal ladders provided in the last remaining tower Mons Meg the famous cannon now sitting at Edinburgh Castle destroyed most of Crookston Castle during a rebellion between I'm told the Earl of Lennox and James IV in the 15th century.
C.
No car park. Check opening times as we caught out before. But great for exploring with a five year old
J. M.

J. R.
Gives one a fair idea of a stronghold built at the top of a hill with a moat in the 1400s
H. J.
Love this random little castle! Great fun to climb around for about half an hour.
I. G.
I think the place must be awesome, but it was closed. The sign says "closed due to weather. Check the website" but the website (when I left home 20mins ago) said it was open... Really a shame.
D. S.
This is a really nice castle with a lot still in tact and an interesting story written down on top of it.
J. R.

A. D.

The place is not well maintained. Much better places to visit around the area so do not waste time here unless you have time to spare.
A. H.

Free entry. small part ruined castle (no trinkets/display) but you are free to walk around and access the ruins and climb staircases/ladders (4 stories) to the roof. Where you get a great view. Shame about the location (1970s council estate in all directions) but well worth a visit with the kids for an hour or 2.
A. M.
Pretty cool place where you can go inside and right to the top. A bit spooky, you take a narrow iron ladder up between levels and the very top opening is extra narrow, but a great view. Also has some good informational plaques. Surrounded by residential estates, it’s a bit in the middle of nowhere but worth a visit if you’re in the area
