Reviews of RSPB Scotland Lochwinnoch
A. G.
A great place to visit with beautiful, well-tended nature walks, friendly staff and a decent wee coffee shop. The site is part of a nature preserve where it is possible to see some very rare birds. An ornithologist's dream come true :-)
s. n.
Lots to see. Well worth a visit. Bird lover's will enjoy.
A. W.
Very friendly staff, free to enter the visitor center and £3 per adult (free to kids) to walk the trails and use their bird hides. The trails are open 24/7 and once paid you can come in and out as much as you want. There are also picnic tables outside the trails near the visitor center. Very good wheelchair access into the visitor center as well as the trails. Great for young kids to learn about nature. We were also given permission for an overnight stay for a small donation which we were happy to do. All in all, a great day.
j.
Took our kids with some friends for a morning walk and picnic lunch. Lovely play areas. Glad to have a toilet by the entrance. Visitor Centre was closed but the birds were still there. Great place.
F. S.
Lovely rspb reserve, great viewing Tower and shop which also sells hot drinks. Good parking area and only 3 pounds entry to the walks if a non member. Well signed and great play areas for kids. Only downfall is the traffic noise from the busy road backing onto the reserve.
G. M.
Absolutely fantastic place and good to unwind and relax.
T. P.
Good selection of trails, all of which were usable with a buggy.
Friendly and engaging staff, who were excellent with the kids. The pre prepared backpacks for children to take adventuring were a big hit, as was the outdoor play area and den building.
No inhabitants spotted on the fairy trail, so we'll have to come back and have another look soon.
S. P.
Nice place, opposite to Lochwinoch railway station approach road. Ample parking space. Cafeteria and souvenir shop with outdoor seating area under a superb tree, which makes the seating area adorable. Many kinds of birds can be see here. Awesome Telescopes gives closer view of the bird activities. Migratory birds breeds here. A wooden seating area near the channel gives a beautiful scenery. Staff are so polite, friendly and helpful. Overall, worth to visit...
P. K.
My little boy loves it here! Plenty of outdoor play with the natural play park, den building and nest building. There are also regular events for families and children and it's a lovely place for a walk. Staff are knowledgeable and keen to talk about the birds that have been spotted that day.
G. J.
I love spending time at this reserve. There's plenty for everyone and the staff are always friendly and there to answer any of your questions. There's a playpark for the children and a shop selling tea and coffee. The reserve is situated 10 minutes walk away from Lochwinnoch railway station.
B. H.
A great place to spend an hour or so of your time. The staff are friendly and the shop is well stocked. There are various walks that you can take depending on the distance that you want to walk. It is a place that can be visited at any time of year as there is always something different to see depending on the season.
G. M.
Beautiful, peaceful place. Ideal for gentle walk and relaxation
A. M.
Lovely to visit anytime of year. Knowledgeable staff at the visitors shop - which is well stocked. Good stop for hot and cold drinks with toilets too.
They are keen to involve the whole family with the nature trails, bird hides, pond dipping etc. Great value day out at only £3 entry for non members.
W.
Had an amazing day out here with the kids. Was very fun and educational. The prices are very cheap and could do with being raised IMO.
We took a picnic and ate it at the top of the trail. I would highly recommend this.
S. M.
It was very good, a lovely setting, and staff were very nice. They could do with more snacks and food, or maybe do a deal with a local snack bar, to sit there for a few hrs a day?. But the views were nice and not too long to walk round
D.
A well-kept visitors centre with friendly and well-educated staff. There are several easy walks of varying lengths in the surrounding area covering a variety of natural terrain. Good activities for children (especially 5-10 year olds) and lots of geocaches for those that are interested as well.
N. B.
Saw a lot of bird enthusiasts and a range of species. The yellow lochside lilies sticking their flower heads above the water were picturesque. Paths are even and routes are well marked out. Some entertainment for the kids on the way too.
Y. C. B.
Went there with my two girls (2.5 and 7 months) we had a great time. The place is fantastic and the people so helpful (I was alone with the two girls so that was very much appreciated!). We will be back.
C. S.
If I see anything or anyone injured I just need to try to help. So I noticed a large bird injured and I called in immediately, they were so nice and very helpful, they work so hard too. 🤘😎🤙
M.
£3 entry for adults, free for members. Fairly small but well run with lots of interesting birds, plants and mushrooms 🍄
M.
Excellent location and good selection of wildlife. Great walks around the area too with close proximity to Castle Semple country park. Great tower views.
However, the building is a bit dated and the tower could do with some modernisation.
S. B.
Lovely staff took us on a quick trip around the building. Walked along one of the accessible trails to watch birds feed. Was lovely.
J. P.
Lovely place and walk, we did 10 miles, fab birds and scenery well worth a visit...
S. D.
Lovely and relaxing place to walk. Staff were very informative and helpful. Nice clean toilets and a lovely cafe. Great for spotting birds and scenery
M. A.
A lovely place to go for a walk, even in the pouring rain; is it was when I visited.
The paths are quite sheltered from the weather because of the amount of trees that follow the route.
For £3 I was able to walk the reserve and saw hundreds of different species of bird. They are so tame, so you really get a magnificent look at them all.
There was wooden play equipment for the youngest member of our party, and she seemed to enjoy using it.
I'm looking forward to returning in the spring time, to see the new baby birds!
S. F.
Beautiful spot, well maintained and great facilities for bird watchers and visiting families.
C. H.
Great walks, very helpful staff. Lovely for an Autumn stroll. Join the RSPB.
A. R. H.
It is such a beautiful place to visit. It has very good view and path for trekking. RSPB stands for The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. You can enjoy your time in the RSPB office there, doing sight seeing around or gazing the birds with binoculars. The location is not far from the train station, easy to reach and wonderful nature around you.
M. B.
Wonderful nature reserve in easy driving distance from Glasgow. The place is run by caring volunteers and full of adventure and outdoors fun for all ages.
B. B.
It was fantastic there is things for little ones and big ones to enjoy
L. C.
A splendid relaxing, mindful experience watching the wee birds from the open hide and enjoying a loch side walk. One of the most peaceful days I've had in a long time and all for £3. Free to members though. Friendly, helpful staff in the shop.
H. W.
Lovely morning out with my brother, who is an experienced bird watcher. Hired a set of binoculars for £5. No time limit, just return them when you're done.
There is a toilet at the main entrance. Coffee is available (but quite flavourless) and there are a few picnic tables outside.
Gift shop has a good supply of bird watching equipment for sale as well as books and the usual fridge magnets etc.
J. T.
Lovely peaceful walk ..and one of the few RSPB reserves that is dog friendly. A real effort gone into making it accessible and enjoyable for children.
G. G.
Lovely walking trails and gift shop
L. C.
Lovely place for a walk with some good views
J. M.
Great experience, very helpful and informative people who know their stuff. Decent coffee also. Fabulous shop that's well stocked.
I. M.
Lovely day out with the kids. Great place for outdoor lovers.
J. W.
We were directed to Barr Loch which was only a few minutes walk away. We were thrilled to spot the Great White Egret on the far bank. Thanks to the staff and volunteers for telling us about the rare visitor.
A. S.
Beautiful walk. Lots of wildlife to deep and varying walks to suit different abilities or preferences. Plenty of benches in scenic spots. Interesting historic things to see. Great place to walk the dogs. We're regulars.
L. F.
Lovely place to visit. Good paths for walking. You can hire binoculars to see more of the wildlife. Lovely little RSPB shop. Also selling snacks, sandwiches and drinks. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Admission to the reserve is just £3 for adults.
R. A.
I have been here on many occasions and I always love it, paths are well maintained along with the feeders always being full, so you'll never be short of a glimpse of very sweet garden birds. The staff are always quick to assist with any questions and are very knowledgeable which is very important! Always love coming here!
S. A.
Little bit pricey but a lovely spot to go for a walk, especially as a family. Lots to see and soke good stuff for the kids to do while you're out enjoying the fresh air
M. L.
It's a lovely place to visit with lovely flat walks which my daughter's were grateful for. Unfortunately when we visited the visitor center was closed. There are activities for children like the fairy door hunt and a mini play area and various hides to spot the wildlife.
V. G.
Enjoyed our visit there this morning! It was very very cold but interesting. We saw quite a few birds from inside the centre and bought some window Bird feeders. Staff exceptionally helpful. Looking forward to going back when weather is a little warmer so we can explore further. Many thanks.
J. O.
Great place to view nature. Bird sanctuary set on the shores of a lake with a lovely walk round including hides where you can view the wild birds. Binoculars can be hired for a modest fee for those people who don't possess them.
C. M.
Lovely peaceful walk,beautiful scenery.
A. R.
A few walking routes. Great when the sun shines. Charges for walks and kids 'scavenger' activities.
a. b.
First time visit whilst on holiday nr here, a nice walk on the trails round the lake , the staff where very nice and helpful, the only problem we had was we could only find 2 Unicorns out of 4, he he, great place to visit for bird watchers and families and disabled wheelchair users as paths virtually flat.
N. F.
Wonderful if nature is important. Run by very knowledgeable volunteers, excellent hides, good walks and a shop with identification posters and recent sighting information displayed. Parking, good for children, not far from the train station or cycle route.
P.
Nice woodland walk, kids playground. Not too busy and enough space to keep away from others re covid. Saw some small birds on the feeders bit disappointed re lack of water birds, it's a loch after all.
D. L. s.
Great place to visit for nature and photography👍👍
T. B.
Loved the place! Nice kinds friendly walk
R. H.
Great for bird watching and the odd deer
I. G.
Easy to find and good parking. Nice walks alongside the lochs. Good play area for children and strategically placed feeders to attract the smaller birds.
C. H.
Love this place. Learned to kayak here. Come here to walk to the bothy/monkey house lookout on top of the hill. Great views from the top and the forests below offer plenty of routes including the maze. RSPB reserce is worth a look so you can use the binoculars and find out what birds have been visiting. Great place for young and old alike.
D. A.
Awesome place nice and relaxing
A. M.
Lovely shop and helpful staff
B. M.
Had been at the park at Castle Semple and decided to bring kids here for a wee visit. They absolutely loved it, looking through the telescope and going out on the nature trail to find bugs for the bug collecter container that I had bought for them. My daughter also enjoyed colouring in a butterfly. Looking forward to our next visit now.
D. J.
This is an excellent venue with very helpful and knowledgeable staff. The facilities both outside and in are kept clean and tidy and access to birds and views are good. Can't compliment the venue too highly.
I. M.
Good visitor center with friendly staff full of helpful information, well kept walking paths and plenty to see and do for adults and children. A well stocked shop plus tea, coffee, snacks etc. Definitely worth a visit.
R. P.
Nice place for nature lovers. Just 250 metres from Lochwinoch Railway Station. Friendly staff, police and highly responsive and explains about birds. Peaceful and call place. It has migratory birds and Bird watch is the main attraction here. A sovenier shop is also present. I just loved it...
D. T.
As with most RSPB sites in Scotland, a great centre with excellent views of birds at the feeders and at the loch. Pleasant walks out to the hides and what looked like some really fun spaces and ideas for families or groups of children.
d. b.
Organized a treasure hunt for young children which kept them interested. Friendly volunteer staff. Great variety of wild birds at the feeding station and good path network
P. a. T. F.

The play area is great and it is a nice walk. I felt some more signage would be useful though, especially for kids.
K. M.
We love visiting RSPB Lochwinnoch. The kids love muddy play area and pond dipping. They get a backpack with binoculars and a bug viewer and a sheet of things to find. And there is an upstairs room to explore if the weather isn't so good.
R. B.

F. M.
A cold and damp afternoon and I nearly ducked (sorry!) out of attending the Birdsong and Bird identification session ~ so so glad I didn't! A really wonderful few hours in this fabulous RSPB sanctuary and at the end i'd actually learned a few birds and their calls, no small achievement for my remaining brain cells. Thank you to Dan and Susan of the RSPB team who so willingly shared their knowledge and love of birds with us. If anyone reading this ever has a similar opportunity, grab it. Just brilliant.
M. W.
