Beware! The Kraken have invaded, taken over the Maritime Museum, the old M&S store, even Princes Quay! I even think they maybe nesting on Monument Bridge. I think the pest controllers have been called, so the infestation should be over in time for the Freedom Festival.

A focal point in the centre of Hull, with high volumes of people scooting across to reach there intended destinations. There is a wonderful small fountain area in which children play, joyfully getting soaked. There are a few eateries and shops in the vacinity. There's ample seating available making it a communal space for eating on the go lunches

Went to see the poppies on the City Hall and Ferens Art gallery. They looked amazing with the water jets in the square all different colours a shame about the hoarding around the Town Docks museum, but the rest of the area was wonderful.

The pedestrian centre of Hull, Queen Victoria's statue dominates, surrounded as she is by three trident yielding maidens. The Monarch looks less than amused at the collapse of her empire. The remnants are impressive, though. Behind her is the Town Hall, its facade is wrought in yellow sandstone. Roman columns decorate the grand entrance recalling another empire gone but not forgotten.

A great meeting place! Fountains, demos, and surrounded by shops and museums.
Ample seating too.

The heart of Hull the statue of Queen Victoria, which causes much mirth as she sits on her throne which happens to be on the top of some public toilets. It wasn't always like that but Victoria Square was altered many years ago to be as it is today. Also in the Square is the Hull City Hall, a popular concert venue for many different types of music. And the cities Maritime Museum which at the moment is undergoing extensive refurbishment. Many shops are also in the same area but, unfortunately, like many city centres trade has suffered and some units are empty. Pre-pandemic fountains would sprout up from the ground and a popular meeting place and a place to relax, Queens Gardens is 2 minutes away.
Update.
The fountains are once again giving children much amusement when they dash in and out of the rising spouts. But with inclement weather approaching that will not be the case so much so it will be purely ornamental. Not having been in the city centre for quite a while I'm not sure if the water is illuminated by many different coloured lights like it used to be.

Fantastic part of freedom festival 2018

Apart from this not being an actual square shaped square, and some mysterious underground caverns situated directly below old Queenie Vic, which were emitting a odour not dissimilar to that of stale wee, this was an excellent city centre feature. The shouts and screams of children playing in the "dancing fountains" from which powerful pumps send water jets shooting explosively into the air, to a height of near 6feet. add to the family fun atmosphere!.
A great place to chill out, maybe at lunch time, sit on one of the many benches, eat your sammywiches and crisps, then you can have a wee, a refreshing splash in the fountain then spend hours wondering if there is any connection between the fountains, with their need for water, and the underground comfort break facilities!

Hub in Hull's city centre featuring a large statue of Queen Victoria, fountain, and bounded by City Hall, the Maritime Museum, and Princes Quay shopping centre. The fountains are spectacular after dark when they're lit up.

Beautiful architecture, shame about the hooded youths swearing and intimidating people on a quiet Sunday afternoon..

Hull's main square with hundreds of years history surrounding it. Overlooking it are:
Hull City Hall: An attractive building built in the 19th century and now hosting a variety of events.
The Maritine Museum: Based in the old Docks Offices and now a museum celebrating Hull's maritime history.
Ferens Art Gallery: An excellent art museum hosting an impressive array of art work from past masters to more modern pieces. In 2017 it hosted the Turner Prize.
In the centre of the square is an impressive statue of Queen Victoria with some public toilets below it. Besides the statue are some fountains which children love playing in during the summer, bringing life and laughter to the square. In the evening, the fountains are illuminated with a beautiful display.

(Translated) Beautiful 'roundabout square' in the heart of the city, surrounded by large stately buildings. With in the center enthroned venerably high above the common people: Queen Victoria! At that moment, however, I thought the part of the city under Her Majesty was just as important. That's because I saw the designation 'gentlemen in'. And every man in dire need knows what that means! When you then enter (they are still royal toilets after all), you would almost forget what you came for. A Victorian gem in toilet experience, kept completely in style and also very clean. Anyway, just took a few pictures. Via 'gentlemen out' we went to the square again. And looked very gratefully at the queen. Had he ever been here?
(Original)
