Reviews of Bush Theatre
E. P.
It is a very intimate theatre which was lovely and has a good atmosphere. It's very inclusive and disability friendly. I went to see an amazing play called 10 Nights, it has captions and a British Sign Language interpreter who was also acting, it was incredible! I highly recommend it.
K. T.
Polite & friendly staff, getting a drink was swift all housed in a lovely old building. The theatre itself is 'in the round' with a great sound system, the tiered seating is comfortable gives a good close view.
I went to see "Fair Play" & very good it was , excellently played with vigour & good humour.
J. M. P.
One of the truly great London theatres championing new and local writing and talent. The Bush Theatre has a solid commitment to productions with culturally diverse content and performers, which reflect London’s social and ethnic diversity. A great example of this is the recent and highly acclaimed production of Red Pitch. The Bush has a wonderful bar and reading room which provide a friendly and local vibe. It’s home from home and will have you returning time and again.
R. S.
The theatre is situated right next to Shepherd's Bush Market station, and short walk from Shepherd's Bush tube. They have great shows, and the café is perfect for those who work remotely or just want somewhere to meet up with friends for a drink and a snack. Good wifi, and lovely the library!
W. O.
Nice theatre with a good little bar and tucked away outdoor space just off Uxbridge Road. Well worth dropping in for a drink even if not seeing a show. Not tried the food yet.
K. P.
Lovely theatre, cafe, library and bar. Great place to have a coffee and relax. Welcoming and helpful staff, great bar as well. Fabulous performing space too.
T. S.
I went their to watch a play which was really good, the staff members could of been a bit more helpful and one of them was a bit rude but overall it’s a lovely little place to watch a play
A. W.
Being local we go to every play. Best local theatre in my view. Plays are great and often make you think. Love the outside space for drinks in the summer
m. r.
I watched a play written and acted by Ollie.
He was great. I look forward to any other shows he does.
P. W.
First time at the Bush Theatre to see the House of Ife (Brilliant!!). Great location and space.
C. K.
Really enjoyed my visit here. The bar and outside area made it even better.
S. P.
Watched a play about how a family cope with grief. And dealing with cultural differences. Very sad but good.
B. T.
great place. the cafe also brilliant. offer discounts to locals (but not huge ones). Really nice theatre with a good focus on accessibility.
S. W.
Really great venue, lovely space to have drinks before or after, Lucky Saint on tap (we'll done guys) and Old Bridge was a phenomenal experience. Will be back!
R. M.
Superb evening in this fully wheelchair accessible venue. Wonderful pop up Nick Hern book store too and astonishing production of new play, Old Bridge.
W. G.
Seems a great place to see something experimental and daring that challenges current norms.
Just seen another great play, House of Ife. What a great venue for some gritty writing.
D. I.
I liked it - a modern, fresh, contemporary venue we missed in West London. Quirky bar and library area, easy to access by tube (unlike Almeida) and brave production. No competition before Questor re-opens in Ealing.
M. J.
Nice theatre. Always puts on interesting plays.
L. T.
Saw House of Ife. Lively and well acted. Recommended highly.
G. C.
Very nice coffee. You are able to enjoy it inside where you can seat and read a book of your choice. Toilet very clean and always furnished
b. m.
Saw The U Club here live and just had the best time, super warm, cosy and good vibe
W. C.
I always love coming to this theatre. Great plays, excellent staff and a decent bar that doesn’t overcharge
S. M.
Have seen plays here. Always feels intimate. Actors in touching distance. So much better than a huge full auditorium. Nice bar and cafe area. Sometimes pop in just for tea. A great asset to the area. Since covid have introduced an awkward app system to order food and drink... why... the staff still come to your table with order. Still love the place though.
J. S.
Just stopped by to have a look around. Excellent cafe inside and great customer service. I will definitely come back to check out the entertainment.
T.
They have really great original shows in a wonderful building. It's a lovely local theatre and a nice place to meet friends for a drink or something to eat.
S. S.
A welcome addition to the london fringe theatre scene, The Bush Theatre has been nurturing new artists and writers since 1972, back when it was located above a nearby pub.
In 2011 the theatre moved to its current location in a former library, and following a 2017 redevelopment now has two spaces… the 180 seater theatre and 70 seater studio (in addition to rehearsal space, a cafe bar, and the largest public theatre reference library in the UK!).
A great venue a stone’s throw from Shepherd’s Bush Market Underground station (though if the Central Line is easier for you, it’s only a 5 minute brisk stroll down the road).
If this was interesting or useful please give a quick thumbs up 👍
B. S.
Brilliant space I was visiting for the first time. I had a good 30 minutes on my own while waiting for a friend to arrive and was impressed at the library bar, great for a drink but a nice space to use your laptop or read a book.
The theatre itself was great and laid out with seats all around the stage. Watched a quite brilliant performance of Arrival.
P. P.
I’ve been meaning to come since the relocation (!) but only made it this weekend. I’ll certainly be returning, as the whole experience was very enjoyable. Brilliant play- thought provoking and the revolving stage meant everyone could see. Not a ground breaking play (The Arrival), as I’m a regular small theatre goer, but certainly one that keeps coming back to me. The staff are lovely and it was good to be able to book easily over the phone, as the website booking doesn’t work well on iPhone. Great bar and space, this venue is now firmly on my go to list.
S.
Saw an excellent performance (Kelly Gough) of a thought provoking play (Harm). The auditorium was carefully organised to maintain social distancing and airy enough to wear a mask comfortably while covid precautions are still required.
A. J. B.
Great experience. We attended 'Strange Fruit'. Great play, actors were very committed to their roles and the set design, in the round, was well thought out and suited to the intimacy of the play's themes. However, it was too hot inside, definitely need to get their air conditioning worked out as that distracted from the performance at times. Service at the bar was great, overall staff at the theatre are lovely and welcoming.
R. S.
Great show starring Reece Lyon...Overflow
She is a very good actress and the play itself was set in the bathroom of a night club
K. P.
It's a nice place with an outside seating area. Food and drinking are very affordable. They have quite an interesting range of plays which are reflecting on current societal issues, and sell small books with their plays for £ 4 each. The staff is very friendly.
A. H.
Great venue, nice already to access location. The staff were very attentive and keen to help. Nice style of place that I'd normally expect to find around Shoreditch (that's not a negative). The theatre is spacious with decent seats. Viewing seems good from most angles. The play we saw was amazing.
J.
Great surprise, I'd never been before, and the layout, terrace and bar are lovely. There were no restricted views. My only problem was I had booked 10 tickets on the same row and they split our booking into different seating blocks with no forewarning or explanation. Good theatre otherwise, and I'm glad it's now on my radar.
S. T.
Sorry if you missed it, but the Bush Theatre & Shepherds Bush Library have just hosted the first Writers Festival in Hammersmith & Fulham. Workshops, book club reviews, short story and poetry competition!
M. F.
Cozy little theatre, a nice little bar at the entrance (happy hour was after the show started unfortunately!). We saw The Arrival which was fantastic. There were lots of empty seats available- highly recommend to see this show!
A. B.
I come here a lot after work for drinks with colleagues and friends - it’s very nice and relaxing, and not overly noisy or busy. Great indoor + outdoor seating.
There’s also a cat who like to try and break in quite often.
L. v. d. G.
Loved it. Such friendly staff. Try the martini cappuccino cocktail. Madonnn. To die for! 🥰😋😋
A. E.
Good to go there cheap and very entertaining
M. S.
I have seen multiple theatre shows here including Strange Fruit and The Arrival and thoroughly enjoyed both shows. Great bar with area to sit inside and outside before the show. Small intimate theatre.
A. O.
Excellent small theatre in Shepherd's Bush. I saw a play "The High Table" there recently and the play and theatre were in perfect harmony in terms of entertainment, enjoyment and great value. It's places like these that enrich London and make it such a fabulous city.
A. A.
Enjoy the quiet, savour the atmosphere, browse through the books.
Enjoy the wide choice of beverages. I loved the cappuccino. The Tea Latte looked good too.
Just drink in the quiet and enjoy the serenity of quieter
times gone by.
D. J.
It's a very nice little theatre.
I only saw one play here so it's hard for me to judge their style but that play (B*easts) was fantastic.
I came early in hope of seeing one of the house cats but the more social cat was lost and the other one was in their offices.
Staff were nice and the location is very convenient.
M. W.
Saw a splendid production, Harm, here and it was an amazing piece of theatre. There was only one piece of set decoration but it worked VERY hard!
T. S.
Beautiful interior, including little library with piano, planty of cosy seats, outdoor seats, small sandwich stand and a modern bar with quite a bit choice. And of course the theatre!
We walked in 20 minutes before the play on a Friday night, bought tickets (very good spot in the audience), got a free loyalty card that gives you 10% off everything there (drinks, tickets for plays, etc.).
J. B.
Great venue with really helpful staff, an on site library, café, and bar. The Bush Theatre has such a laid-back and friendly vibe to it. Small, cosy theatre with the rare bonus of leg room. I'm 6ft tall and had enough space to put my belongings under my seat and move my legs.
My only note would be that the theatre heats up quite quickly, probably from the lighting. Don't go in with layers unless you want to slowly roast yourself.
E. M.
Offers an interesting selection of contemporary theatre. Even if you're not seeing a performance here, it's a great spot for a G&T or beer either solo or with friends. Outside area where you can sip your drink and watch the world go by. Easily reached by tube, overground and bus.
H. W.
Very good facility to have in the neighbourhood. The plays are interesting and the cafe is relaxing. Often the cafe is closed unexpectedly for management meetings, which is not the best thing to do for the customers though.
B. O.
Excellent fringe theatre venue: With a Bush Theatre membership card you are eligible for a 10% discount off performance tickets and food and drink at the bar.
They have a nice quiet area to work in during the day with fast WIFI and a more communal area to meet up with friends and chew the fat over a coffee or a drink round the other side of the bar. The outdoor area is nice; the venue itself is a good place to play Backgammon.
P. B.
It's more than a theatre, it's the heart of the neighbourhood and the local community. Apart from the avant garde theatrical scene it also offers and amazing space for working, reading and socialising. The team is amazing and they are doing superb job in promoting new theatrical plays and running the place. It's an experience not to miss all day long.
g. m.
I am a recent 'convert' and enjoyed the play(s) and the cheery staff. Food inexpensive and tasty, highly recommended. All I can say is that less than 5/5 stars suggests you've been spoilt (possibly). Worth a go even if you're NOT going to the excellent theatre....library room unique. Well done.
P. S.
Great bars (indoors and outdoors) and a wonderful play (Harm by Phoebe Eclair-Powell. Stunning afternoon.
S. I.
RED ALERT....the bar now boasts CAMDEN REAL ALES ON DRAUGHT. Drop in and try a drop or two served from bright red pillar box pumps. You can't miss ' em. Thanks as always go to all the wonderful support staff here: admin, reception, bar, and community engagement who always make all who enter this comfortable refurbished space extremely welcome, immediately included and can answer any query with a smile. Every time l edit this review it's fuelled by their valuable assistance.
The former library's makeover has made it a fully accessible venue with a wide ramped entrance adjacent to the market leading past outdoor seating and decorative plants. Double spaced sliding doors are easily operated by wheelchair users, less firm of foot and encumbered parents with or without bulky buggies. The reception/bar/cafe and reading areas are clearly signposted as are all the rooms on the upper floors down to safety details and the directions on the disabled lift. You can read inspirational quotes on the wall, see the contributors list for those who've helped fund the eclectic space you're standing in. Though open and spacious it still achieves and retains the cosy feeling of a quiet, relaxing, 'library' space. The walls still reverberate in my imagination with the rustle of pages turning, heads absorbed and transported into other worlds by a myriad of words. Now these heads are either bent in absorbing conversations or gazing intently at performers engaging you in persuasive thought, an exchange of intimacy entirely appropriate to the style and rustic charm of this brick building.
I attend the Neighbourhood Company's workshops once a month on a Saturday , which is thoroughly enjoyable and is attracting a delightful mix of ages and talents from Bush, White City, Askew and surrounding areas. It's a building for its borough, it's community, for dramatic and visual arts, a beacon in a cultural desert. Yes we have music venues, another theatre and cinemas etc but how many of them engage you in conversations about what you'd like to see. This place doesn't just want your ticket money, it wants and commands your loyalty by virtue of how much it values your contribution to its work. Read the website, learn about their support for new playwrights, expand your mind without breaking your bank balance - drink / food prices very reasonable - soup, sandwiches, pastries cakes (: become a friend of. It's THE FASHIONABLE PLACE TO BE ANY TIME OF THE WEEK.
D. L.
The entire venue brings a really nice energy to Shepherd’s Bush. Very nice coffee and food and the café and bar area is absolutely beautiful. Great place to hang out and socialise and have business meetings.
Just need to… Actually visit the theatre (!)
E. G.
Wonderful theatre with friendly cafe/bar
S. K.
Great intimate theatre. Doesnt matter where you sit you'll still get a great view whichever way that theatre is set up. Very friendly staff. And a lovely little cafe too
I. J.
Fabulous local theatre with great talent. Many plays end up transferring to west end theatres. Lovely bar with indoor and outdoor seating. All, in a beautiful old library.
L. R.
Have been to quite a few shows at this theatre. I can honestly say we have never been disappointed. Lovely atmosphere, coffee shop. Also, have seen some great plays and acting at very reasonable cost!
T. R.
Love it. Staff amazing, good bar, close to the tube. Groundbreaking original plays. Great crowd, the plays I've seen there are mainly a 20s / 30s kind of audience.
Y. J.
Lovely time at Bush to see Misty in the matinee on Saturday. Love what you've done to the place. Great upgrade and fantastic outside. Friendly staff and really nice time. One if my favourite small theatres
L. C.
I visited the cafe today with a friend. There's a large room with tables and chairs and a secret garden outside the backdoor. The staff are really friendly and helpful, however if you're after dairy free options, you'll be out of luck - there's no soy milk behind the bar. Free wifi and good coffee.
T. G.
Excellent venue for contemporary theatre, with a well stocked bar that also sells sandwiches and cake 🍰
The reading room makes a for a warm, civilised retreat from the bustle of Shepherd's Bush when you have an hour to kill, and the terrace is a great place for a cold pint on a hot day.
J. C.
Love this place! Makes us feel at home! Haven't tried their food yet however the coffee is good! The people working there are also lovely!
S. C.
Great selection of local plays. You can park at the early Westfield cheaply, just a 5-10 minute walk from the theatre. Nice helpful staff with good food available before the shows.
I. A. Y.
Love love love the Bush. The theatre programming is always on point and the cafe/bar space is gorgeous. Really lovely creative feel but still connected to the community. Intrigued to see what the new Artistic Director does to build on Madani Younis’ legacy!
T. F.
The staff are super friendly and has a baby changing room which is kept nice and clean. Also have a range of vegan friendly hot drinks and food
G. E.
Fully modernised , with an ecletic mix of plays and musical events mean this is" a must "on your short list of London theatres .It may lack the glamour of city theatres but more than makes up for that in sheer enthusiasm for everything staged ...you'll be glad you did .
J. S.
Have been to some really good live gigs here over the years. Good venue in West London
Nearest tubes Shepherds Bush Market, Shepherds Bush, Goldhawk Road and Wood Lane. Lots of buses stop around Shepherds Bush Green.
e. c.
Fascinating Off West End venue
A. C.
A great building and a fantastic artistic programme under Artistic Director Madani Younis. Their bar is lovely as well - the kind of place you could easily hang out in for hours - and they have an outside area that's great for sunny days
C.
This place is great, it's a library, a theatre and a bar so it has something for all seeking adventure. Or if you just want a quite place to sit and work it's great too. Staff are wonderfully cherry and helpfull.
S. S. U.
A WONDERFUL place to have meetings, the ambience is perfect. Staff are friendly & chilled. Obviously you can also go to the theatre, which I have done in the past. There is always something interesting to watch.
M. W.
I'm not into theatre, but the place and its atmosphere is amazing to relax at the coffee shop-bar, it has a beer garden as well, loved it
E. M. B.
Just dropped in at the theatre bar as arrived in Shepard's Bush to meet my sister for a gig and found a little gem ! Great place for a casual drink perfectly located to wait for someone from the train / tube
L. B.
Thus place is amazing. Such a nice atmosphere. The only downside- the eating audience. during live performance..People, that is not acceptable, it is a theatre, not a cinema
D. G.
We visited the Bush theatre on our way to Bush Hall, great use of space, library and area for students to study. Good coffee and Gin and tonic, friendly staff.
J. Z.
