Reviews of Hackney Empire
P. E.
We went to se a fantastic opera performance by English Touring Opera. It was a part of a Valentine's day gift.
The Hackney empire theatre is really beautiful place.
Ticket prices. Between £10 and £35
Staff . Amazon and knoledgable and helpful.
Bar. Good selection of drinks and good prices to.
Safety. Loads security operatives there and it is welcoming sign, you will feel safe there for sure.
Performance and sound.
Loud and clear sound well balanced. The sound will go like needle trough you.
Definitely recommend and I will be visiting the Hackney empire theatre again.
And highly recommend it all seeking good performances.
Thank you for having us.
M. S.
A glorious theatre that continues to stand the test of time. So beautiful inside. Quite unusual to have some table-seating behind the stalls, but everyone gets a great view.
M. P.
We went to watch Jack and the Beanstalk panto last night, It was so much fun. The production, actors, songs and music were amazing! The kids loved it and the actors involved the audience which was great for all. Kids loved all the actors especially Tilly Trot and Simple Simon! Thank you to all the actors and folks involved you did a great job. We sat at the front row in the stalls and I loved being that close. The theatre is really beautiful, good toilet facilities with a bar at the back serving drinks and snacks. The theatre is smaller than the west end ones but i loved it as it makes it a more personal show. Will come again!

Another cracking experience for adults and kids! We go every year and are never disappointed! Book with the kids they will absolutely love it! Highly recommended
T. F.
This is a very ornate theatre and is rich in its history but is still community focused. The original architect used the Hackney Empire as his trial before going onto the Royal Albert Hall. Theatre has many bars and the seating is comfortable. Highly recommend.
J. S.
We are so thankful we were able to attend the Hackney panto this year. It was fantastic to see the returning stars on stage and we all thoroughly enjoyed the show. I also wish to give further credit to the front of house team members also. We were outside with our children waiting for x2 family members in our party when a team member asked "are you waiting to go inside?" We replied that we were but our party wasn't complete, to which he said "it's too cold for waiting out here, come in and wait here and let me know when they arrive" which we were all very thankful for as it was very cold! But we all thought is was clear everyone at the Hackey Empire was very welcoming and ensuring everyone there had a great night.
C. B.
Amazing venue, great experience for a theater. The ceiling is slightly glittery. Confy chairs, big stage, lights and sound were flawless. Staff was polite, friendly and knowledgeable. I haven't tried anything from the bar, but I know they have one.
V. N.
Impressed - I had not expected such a large theater - great crowd and experience. I'd be very happy to visit again. Very close to the train station and main road. Bus service is also easily accessible making the commute easy. For someone in East London or Canary Wharf area - easily accessible place compared to the Theater district which takes much longer to reach. The shows are slightly offbeat - I liked the standup comedy show by Sindhu V which was brilliant and highly commended.
M. W.
Went to see pantomime Jack and the bean stalk although packed with school kids was fantastic. Staff very friendly and attentive and approachable. Could have done with more snacks though.
B. S.
Went to see a show organised by uni students. Though a bit run down, the place is gorgeous. Seats were comfortable and enough leg room, which was a pleasant surprise.
F. D.
Top tier theatre. Saw Ed Gamble there and laughed my socks off, really terrific stuff all round x
J. P.
Great venue, small but good for an intimate show. Seats were comfortable with reasonable leg room. Would definitely visit again.
M. T.
It's always absolute scenes at this venue. The stage is a bit spicy but shredders are allowed if required. The crowds wear a lot of River Island, or possibly Mango, clothing and the boxes are a bit windy. Thanks for having me on Tailenders Live at the Hackney Empire! #tailendersoftheworlduniteandtakeover 🌶️🏏🥭
A. R.
I went to watch Jack in the beanstalk with family and it's so nice inside, so clean, drinks are cheap and people Re really nice and fast paced work. The theatre is a nice place to go.
J. S.
The panto Jack and the Beanstalk at the Hackney Empire is great fun, Clive Rowe is one of the best Dames in panto. It is worth going just to see him.
D. L.
Very grand theatre, good seats all round, no restricted views.
B. C.
A really nice traditional theatre. We went for a recording of BBC's Friday Night is Music Night hosted by Ken Bruce. Lovely setting, great show.
L.
Visually delightful, I have always had a wonderful experience when attending performances here.
R. L.
Excellent customer service
Although ice cream tubs for children
£2.50p very pricey for size about 2 inches max high
Otherwise enjoyable evening thank you
C. C.
Brilliant pantomime. Great atmosphere. Superb performance by whole company. Had great time.
A. T. E. (.
Great gig but it was so hot in the dress circle that it was a bit uncomfortable! The service from staff was amazing and the architecture is incredible, shame about the air con!
M. W.
I saw AvenueQ here and I thought it was a nice venue. I did not have the best of seats in the upper circle D row but I could still see perfectly fine. The audio was good; the tickets were very reasonably priced, and it was easy enough to book online. The venue even mailed my tickets to me for free which was a bonus. They have a bar inside the theatre to get drinks before and during intermission.
J. M.
Went to see Danny Baker and this was the first time we had visited and were impressed with the building and interior.
The bar upstairs was crowded so recommend that you order interval drinks to avoid queuing.
Seats close together so if you are tall it's awkward and uncomfortable but the decor was lovely.
This is what you'd expect from an old time Music venue.
I'd love to return.
T. H.
Lovely little theatre, but be warned that seats at the front are not steeply graduated, meaning a real person can obscure your view. Acoustics were good. The play, avenue q, was outstanding.
C. R.
Went for the annual pantomime which was a good as ever. Its decor and ambiance is a joy to behold and feel.
B. G.
Went to see King today sat in the Upper Circle (F9 and F10) would book these seats again. Also had a bar and toilets nearby . Seat location was brilliant could see everything. The theatre was of good maintenance. The production of King was absolute perfection was inspirational and emotional with a bit of humour thrown in. The cast were fantastic. Their voices were powerful and strong the message was well understood. 👍To the choir and orchestra. Loved every minute of it. My only regret was being too late to buy a program which went like hot cakes. 🤗 to the director and production team. I hope this goes nationwide as it's a must see by ALL
Thank you 👌🥂🍾
C. J.
Beautiful old theatre with quality shows!
Built by Frank Matcham in 1901, it’s had the greats perform there like Charlie Chaplin and Houdini.
It’s designed so well that there isn’t a bad seat in the house.
O. H.
Amazing place , went for traditional Xmas Panto and it didn't disappoint. Some good actors audience participation as you would expect .And it being in the iconic hackney empire made it just that little bit more special
O.
It was nice, clean, it has an indoor bar where you can get alcoholic n non alcoholic drinks from but it really could do with some air conditioning as it became quite hot in there, apart from that, I had a great time seeing Dave Chappelle's stand up comedy there😂🤣😁👌🏿👍🏿
C. B.
Went to see Broughs United great performances and atmosphere
L. M.
A beautiful building that has history in abundance. I felt like I was a visitor in the victoriana era. You will be in good company by joining Chaplin, Houdini and so many more
E. P.
Lovely building
The performance was ok
Girl singers were very good!
L. O.
A mini Royal Albert Hall, the Hackney theatre has a capacity of Over 1000, with ample space and shows to suit everyone, If you are attending a show here, it is better not to drive. There are ample buses stopping right in front of the venue.
The acoustics are very good and ticket prices are very moderate.
R. N.
Beautiful venue with comfy seats great acoustics and some brilliant shows.
H. S.
Very kind and helpful staff, helping me to rectify a mistake I made with my booking. Hugely appreciated, thank you!
C. R.
Very uncomfortable seats. Long queues for the bar. Show we saw started late - people still purchasing drinks in the bar?
T. H.
Amazing theatre. Magical performance. Lovely people.
J. S.
Beautiful theatre with ornate early 20th century interior
c. 2.
Amazing show Respect Aretha Franklin song book. The building is amazing
M. I.
What amazing theatre, with vintage art inside!
P. G.
Fantastic experience. Thank you! Jack and The Beanstalk was awesome!
M. V.
An amazing theatre with great and friendly staff. The plays are always great very funny for adults and kids. Very smart and political with flawless performances from all the cast. There is food and a bar, pricey but nothing you wouldn’t expect from a theatre in London. Amazing experience I would recommend everyone to go.
M. B.
Went to see Avenue Q, the staff were really helpful, the venue is comfortable, accessible and easy to get to and find.
N. N.
Absolutely stunning interior.
Staff very helpful and friendly.
E. J.
Great night at the opera: La Boheme
G. M.
An excellent venue, small enough that anything you see feels intimate, drinks are well priced and the historic building is beautiful.
D. L.
Suburb from start to finish, gr8 venue, staff...👊👏👍
P. B.
A beautiful old theatre with very friendly staff.
M. W.
Amazing place .great pantomime. Would recommend to all
A. W.
Like all theatres, it’s difficult if you’re legs are by any means an average length or longer. That said, the theatre is set out well with necessary bars and amenities.
I caught Avenue Q here and I was pleasantly surprised. I would definitely return here in the future should they have performances I want to see and I will continue to keep an eye on their future listings.
M. A.
It really is a very pretty theatre. Less than 5 minute walk from Hackney Central station. The staff were friendly.
R. L.
A wonderful theatre with a particular focus on Black arts and culture. Their Pantos every Christmas are the best in London.
M. K.
This theatre despite being in the Eastern part of the city is a great match to the West End music venues. It's interior is spacious, rich and pleasing. Over hundred years it attracted the greatest artists of many times and is still rocking. Highly advised to check for a gig you like and book yourself in.
K. M.
Lovely theatre with good level access from the front. However as with many old theatres there are steps in to the main foyer so a door to the side (but still at the front) has to be used.
The wheelchair seating I had was at the back, furthest away from the stage and I front of the bar. Good seating but I'm always disappointed that there isn't the choice that everyone else has.
J. V.
Beautiful proscenium arch theatre which has welcomed many great acts over the years.
A.
A wonderful building with period features, good sound and lighting system.
S. H.
Nice old theatre. A pleasure to watch a show here.
R. S.
I was at the Hackney Empire to watch Avenue Q. In terms of price, it was very reasonable. It got very warm inside the theatre but that was to be expected. My only issue was that the amount of legroom was pretty much non existent for the seats in the upper circle. My knees were digging into the backs of the people in the row ahead of me so I had to constantly shift around to try to avoid this.
M. W.
Great place, helpful staff and great atmosphere. The Peppa pig show also was suprisingly good, although my daughter live it far more than us.
L. P.
A very ornate, intimate, lovely venue. A jewel.
A. J.
The Cafe Bar is excellent venue for live music oh gunquit were brilliant. Das Klamps great also.
P. R.
Had a fun evening at the Kings & Queens of Comedy last night at this beautiful nostalgic theatre.
The staff at every point were helpful, however in the bar even from the beginning of the evening on the dress circle level there was no tonic water (regular or slim line) or diet lemonade.
The female toilets had NO toilet paper or hand wash and the situation had not improved by the time of the intermission.
I suggest that you take everything that you think you may need for the evening as the venue obviously cannot be relied upon to provide the basics.
C. H.
Love to come here twice a year to see the English Touring Opera performances! A beautiful old theatre, very thoughtfully renovated. Just don't book Box I, as only 1 of the 3 seats has anything like a view of the stage!!
B. B.
Great panto good atmosphere very enjoyable
k. f.
Fantastic night thank you thank you to the staff
MS Waltham Forest group
S. P.
Beautiful theatre with amazing red & gold ceiling incorporating twinkling stars. This was my first visit. I remember there was a campaign some years ago to save the theatre & thank goodness that was achieved. I saw a brilliant performance of the opera Macbeth by the English Opera Touring Company & will definately hope to see other performances there.
A. F.
It's a beautiful theatre with great architectural details inside... The acoustics are good and the venue hosts some really nice productions - it's been used as a auditions for well+known talent discovery shows... Well worth your visit!
J. A. B.
Beautiful old theatre. Nice friendly staff. Not too expensive.
We saw a panto there (Jan 2017) and the sound, lighting and set were all excellent. Panto writing and acting was also excellent, but naturally this will vary depending on the show you see
A. B.
My favourite place for entertainment. My family love the Pantos. This years Sleeping beauty is brilliant.Transformation of the stage is always stunning. The live orchestra really enhances the performance. And the cast are so talented. All in all a great family night out.
O. C.
Beautiful, spectacular old theater, amazing sound, and super friendly staff. But for tall people it is very difficult not to bother the spectator below. We were lucky that it was not full, and my husband could change seats.
J.
The performance was excellent. Everyone was in stitches throughout. Clive Rowe and Tameka Empson were hilarious.
Hackney Empire is a great venue as well. Tickets not overpriced for what you got. I loved the Hackney twist to the show and glad we went to it over the West End show.
Can't wait for next year's performance.
M. S.
Went with my children earlier today, very inviting environment. Great screens and comfy seats. Very close to Shoreditch as well, so if you’re local 100% worth the travel to come here. Thank you to all the staff, the children had an amazing morning as well
M. T.
Really good venue in a great location for me. A lot less hassle than trying to get home from the West End. Next time a go I will avoid the gallery as the seats there are up in the gods and there's a lot of stairs to get up!
It seems to be mainly cans and bottles in the upstairs bar which surprisingly are not too badly priced in the grand scheme of things.
Overall I've been to better theaters and I've definitely been to worse but for value for money I don't think you can really go wrong
C. H.
The opera was great but staff annoying, walking back & forth during the performance...it's distracting!
Also audience members need to be trained to come back from the bar before curtain up & not to leave early, thus blocking the view of those still watching!
R. N.
What a lovely theatre! Has the atmosphere of a completely traditional British setting. There's a cafe attached to it so you can come a bit earlier, have a bite and then go inside for the show. There's a bar open just behind the seating area for if your show is really good (or really bad). There's lots of comfortable seating and you can get a pretty decent view even from the back.
K. H.
Came here with my wife venue was lovely, easy to find and drinks werent horribley expensive
K. A.
Great theatre with an eclectic selection of productions being shown here. The pantomimes are always the best in London and are modern, socially topical and diverse. The bar and restaurant area is funky and a great place for a night out even if you aren't seeing a show.
S.
Fantastic theatre, in the heart of hackney, literally you almost forget where you are, security are polite, staff are friendly and always happy to help, the prices at the bar is just as good, toilets are clean, lovely place to watch a show, will definitely go back. Had a fantastic evening at the empire highly reccomend.
D. B.
Good theatre where I watched the Big Big Train concert. I had gone for the unassigned seats in the gallery which were cheaper and I was concerned that either visibility or acoustics would be limited but none of that: the experience was great.
L. B.
We went last night to see the opera Mamzer Bastard and were very impressed. The building within is amazing in its ornate detail. The acoustics are very good and the production was very good. All in all worthy of a day out as we travelled from the Midlands to see it (doing other things in the day too).
H. S.
Great venue - seen both comedy and music here and both times the venue amplified the evening well. Staff are always polite and getting in and out well staggered unless you have to climb to the stalls in the heavens of course - take your tramping boots! Good selection of reasonably priced drinks and service is prompt. Easy access to bathrooms - which are not the Ritz but they do the job. The place has great warm local feel.
M. F.
A fantastic and beautiful theatre!
D. J.
Staff were amazing. Assisted me greatly once they saw I had a disability👍🏾🙂. Thoroughly enjoyed the show I came to see and was comfortable in my seat, which I am also glad was near the Disabled toilets👌🏾
C. W.
Great place located in the heart of Hackney. Very spacious although seats are a little uncomfortable after a while of sitting down. Staff are friendly and enthusiastic as is the service you receive when entering and throughout your experience. Bar in nice and, although small they have a great selection of beverages.
A. G.
Beautifully restored Victorian theatre hosting a wide variety of events. A good selection of bars associated with the premises. Staff are friendly, efficient and helpful.
C. L.
Been going since I was a child and love it!!
O. M.
Lovely initmate venue right the heart of hackney in East London. Small stage with quite steep seating around on 2 tiers. I sat on the top tier still with a pretty good view and seat. The stalls looked comfortable and well placed from where I was but don't know for sure.
It's v close to hackney central overground station - 5 min walk. It has a couple of entrances depending on where you are sitting so watch for that. Bar is a bit rubbish but loads of amazing food places just outside.
G. M.
Lovely old theatre, worth a visit to see the decor alone. We went for the panto - Aladdin which was up to their usual high standard and it was great fun just watching the reactions of the kids who made up 95% of the audience.
T. P.
Beautiful old theatre. Good location. Only reason why it is not a 5 is because the chairs are a bit smaller. If you are a bit bigger that normal you won't be too comfy.
C. H.
You walk into a nice open bar area, and you're already relaxing before you actually sit down. It's majestic but there's somehow a really homely feel. Friendly staff, really took care of the theatre goers. There's no foyer, you just come in off the street and straight into the bar and theatre space. Still a traditional stage etc. but a great venue for a show.
L. C.
Great show but space was limited.
D. N.
Well worth a visit - we've been three years running for the Panto , and it's excellent. Magnificent interior in red & gold. Seating is reasonable and there is a bar at the back of stalls. Very good local cast with genuine community feel. Very professional performances.
S. G.
I recently went to the Hackney Empire to see the Royal Shakespeare company's production of Hamlet. As the theatre is quite small you are able to see most of the stage from most of the seating areas. I sat in the dress circle right at the edge by the aisle and I had a very good view of the show.
Within the theatre itself the bar and the toilets are both rather accessible and the staff as well as that are quite helpful.
The Hackney Empire is one of the older theatres so it has a similar style to the theatres in the West End and therefore has an entrance with a small foyer and a large staircase to the dress and upper circles and from what I can see, has limited lift access.
For those wishing to have a drink or dinner before entering the Hackney Empire, there is a Hackney Empire bar/restaurant that is on the corner of the road right beside the theatre.
Overall, it is a a small comfortable and well ventilated theatre with friendly staff and good views.
R. B.
Great old style music hall, lovely building. I happened to see a dreadful production called "Anthropocene" a ridiculous modern opera about climate change - so bad I had to watch it all.... But that is not the Empires fault. If you go there just enjoy the building its a treasure
m. l.
One of London's most beautiful theatres steeped in history. Do go to support this gem financially as it needs all the £s to offer its varied programme. Lots of community based and internationally acclaimed performances. GO!
M. V.
Great theatre but we got restricted view seats, which wasn't the problem. The problem was they weren't proper seats, more like perch stools, which were incredibly uncomfortable and gave one of our party bad vertigo. They should have made it clear what the "seats" were like.
S. B.
3rd year in a row we've been to Panto, absolutely brilliant, great production, lots of edgy jokes, FYI : we're all 30 years +. Defo kid friendly although great to go with your friends.
Will be returning next year, keep up the good work guys!
J. H.
What a beautiful old theatre. We went to a radio recording there and it was a beautiful venue. Comfy seats and good facilities. We really enjoyed visiting this venue and look forward to our next visit.
C. J.
A great bit of history and really enjoyed my time here.
Only 2 criticisms: Chairs have next to no legroom and the place was covered in dust. From sitting in my chair and looking up around me there were mountains of dust on the decorations on the balconies and on the decorations around the stage.
H. D.
One of the best venues in east London. Pricey bar though
C. E.
Great production of “Lear“. First time I'd been to the Hackney Empire even though I had worked on the doorstep for 30 months a couple of years ago. Back then I worked long hours and cycled off home (way away!) when I finished. Great theatre, friendly staff dealt quickly with partner on a crutch escorting us up by little staff lift. Good café/bar too. Five stars definitely.
T. D.
Lovely venue
b. t.
Review of downstairs café. A trendy Hackney coffee shop attached to the Hackney Empire theatre. Good strong coffee and s wide range of other drinks. Alcohol is also sold here, some interesting craft beers available. Tasteful background music and wall art add to the ambiance. Good place for an informal work meeting.
s.
It was absolutely, fantastically hilarious 😂😂 non stop belly laughing.. what a great cast, production, music arrangement, set and crew. Cannot fault it at all. All the family, age range from 63 to 5, thoroughly enjoyed the show.
S. L.
Staff were polite and helpful. Venue (as I'm seating) is very cosy with a good view of the stage. Little private booths are good. The only real downfall Is that parking is atrocious.
C. C.
Just attended Hackney Empire to see the Children of London Fields perform some improvised dance pieces. They were wonderful and the venue lived up to its fantastic reviews. Had a fabulous evening.
K. A.
Absolutely stunning theatre.
K. B.
Lovely old music hall/theatre. A little bit down at heel in places (carpets have seen better days) but well worth visiting. Plenty of local bars and eateries nearby too.
V. F.
Great show at the Hackney Empire. Went to see Cinderella and although i was veryYYY disappointed by Cinderellas dress for the ball...i mean come on man it...i don't want to give away what her dress looked like but it had no shimmer no shine and i mean its Cinderella!!! she was meant to be wow!!! but at the ball she was just mehhhh. Very pretty girl with very lovely hair...but not even her hair was done up for the ball! to me that was disappointing! on a better note the show was lovely and i especially loved that the kids enjoyed it!!! even an 18 month old will be fixated eyes on the stage for the entire show. It was a lovely show and there were lots of laughs and lovable characters. The staff at the hackney empire are quite friendly. They exceeded my expectations always ready with a smile and very helpful. The theater its self was lovely, we were the furthest you could ever be from the stage and we were really high up and we could see everything. Building is big and there are restrooms for use. There is also a cloakroom if you want to get more comfortable and go in without your coat on. You could also leave your buggy in there if you come with younger children. You won't be able to go up to the show with the buggy as there are lots of stairs to climb and if you are sitting at the top there will not be a lift that goes all the way up there and there really isn't a place to put your buggy once you are in there. All in all it was a lovely experience at the hackney empire. They sell those light up wands for the kids for about £6 pounds and they absolutely loved them!!! Oh and there is a bar...they sell the nicest cider there and because it was Christmas they also had mulled wine. Sure you could find other good stuff there too. Great show, great employees great atmosphere...will definitely be going again.
D.
Not the best theatre but it was great to see Paul Chowdhury live and have the entire show recorded!! . Just wish there was bit more leg room in between the rows of seats.
M. R.
Once again a simply magnificent Panto. Top performance all round. The Dame is a Dame in the proper fashion. The script current and funny. All in a wonderful theatre. Great craic! Especially the dancers!
J. H.
Hackney Empire re-opened so live performance with some stonking Wagner. It's wonderful.
I. D.
Large area with great view of th stage from all angles
K. M.
Great venue with a community heart . Yearly panto never disappoints and this year Aladdin was no exception. Great mix of productions and family friendly staff . Well worth supporting and a real local asset .
S. S.
famous venue for events such as gigs, shows and musicals. came here for my nieces school show and very nice and big. drinks could have been a bit colder and a wider selection of snacks
M. R.
The coffee bar is very big!! It's well worth a visit if your passing. The coffee was good and so was the tea. The guy that served us was really chatty, relaxed and very welcoming. Very nice place
K. S.
Saw the Christmas Panto Aladdin! Fantastic performance and venue. Booked ticket online and picked up at the box office. No parking lot near by but can use Justpark app to park near by.
P. P. P.
Love this old theatre. Visit and be in awe - look up and around and savour the aesthetics. Home to the Royal Variety show in days gone by but venue still puts on some great shows.
D. P.
Went to see Dave chappelle. He was absolutely hilarious and the hackney empire held timely intervals for drinks breaks & closure.
I really rated the experience as a whole - more parking would be ideal but hey! You’re so close to central London that seems like a big wish. Parked behind costa coffee for £2.80 12 hours parking.
What a night
J. L.
Best panto and comedy. Nothing compares
A. B.
A wonderful building that has survived against the odds.
A. C.
Beautiful theatre. Can get *very hot* in summer. Best for shows in winter. The bar on the corner is lovely too.
P. L.
The Hackney Empire is housed in a beautiful Victorian theatre, and the inside is wonderfully ornate and plush. Seats are comfortable and spacious. It's really close to the tube which is great if you're dashing to see something after work. Definitely worth a visit.
M. E.
Lively and lovely venue. Quite central. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The seats were a bit too closely situated, despite that I had a great evening!!!!
M. R.
Love it here. Beautiful interior and always a lively atmosphere. I've spent too many late nights in the adjoining bar over the years. The pantomime is about the only thing we see here now but it's usually a cracker.
W. S.
Went to watch Aladdin Panto theatre nice friendly cosy..chairs get l 7 or 8 or k7 8 you be in middle downstairs ...end seats like f1 f2 give you neck kache and restrict viewing.
Parking is on the side payable all days till 11pm in night cost me 8.86 3 hours download ringo app.
Panto itself was ok a bit rude here there like verbal jokes and Aladdin was a girl.
Overall it was ok you have Sainsbury's local few minutes walk save you buying expensive sweets and drink a inside
S. M.
Great venue for comedy. The view from the gallery was pretty good and queue for drinks at the bar wasn't bad. Entrance for the gallery is round the side of the venue in case you waste time waiting at main entrance
S. O.
This place brings back memories but the only thing that let's it down. Is the process of turning e-tickets into physical tickets which need to be done before entering. The fact that some events are hosted on other ticketing sites and you pay a fee only for me to still have to line up in long queues just to got physical tickets.
C. V.
Very good performance for the Romanian team.
Perfect architecture, sound and colours.
Could use some refurbish and more toilets....if it is possible.
R. B.
Love this Space ? check out Deptford Heritage Festival production 14-28 Feb 2019 #Liberty tells true story of Hackney activist Kath Duncan & her battle to establish civil rights in 1930s Britain. Amazing cast and at just £15 a ticket the best value present on the planet. this is going to be huge. so get YOUR tickets NOW
C. W.
Ok needs ro be refurbished seating area was grotty. We pay so much for a ticket and more. Im 34 and the carpet and seating hasent been ckeaned since i was 11. DECOR however is superb.
C. F.
Wanted to share my story, im a mother of 5 children, 2 of them being tested for autism, on the 5th Dec 2018 in the early hours of the morning our apartment caught on fire, we lost all of our possessions and our property. When the Hackney Empire heard about what had happened they generously gave us tickets for our family to see Aladdin.
My children had a amazing time, they was memorized by the venue, all staff was friendly to us, we had no fuss collecting our tickets from the box office and the show was amazing, managing to have us all laughing.
I know the Hackney Empires is a charity, but they gave as soon as they thought they could help, and they did help to brighten the spirits of 5 children when they needed it the most.
F. D.
What a wonderful theatre! One of the first places I visited when I moved to Hackney. Genuinely good selection of shows, although some of the staff could do with learning some manners.
P. H.
Best balance of size and intimacy; great shows at decent ticket prices, no rip-offs over ice-cream or programmes. Obviously much-loved by its audience, and packed out last night!
A. M.
I love this theatre but was slightly disappointed with the Comedy Night I went to see. Nina Conti was the star performer by a mile and should have been the headline act. I found the other performers disappointing and as Nina Conti was first on the show went downhill after her.
R. R.
Absolutely love Hackney Empire. It's beautiful, has a great programme of shows throughout the year, supports aspiring talent and local people...and then there's the best panto in the world!!! Give it your support.
C. R.
Beautiful Frank Mitcham theatre in a vibrant neighbourhood. Interesting programming. Not quite sure though why, in the whole of London, this seems the only theatre bar where they make you pay a surcharge if you use a credit card. In 2016!
L. P.
Beautiful theatre space hosting a wide range of shows. Seating is a little snug for taller patrons, but still more generous than some West end venues
-.
Nice old fashioned theatre run with lots of enthusiasm and good vibes.
I loved the opera here, a yearly treat not to be missed.
M. M.
Very nice, atmospheric old music hall venue to see a gig.
Our seats had an excellent view of the stage.
A. D.
Really nice venue
A. P.
Beautiful building, excellent performance. Seats quite uncomfortable with restricted leg room and in some cases restricted view. Please abandon the plastic disposable cups in the bar!!!
M. C.
Watched 'Di Jamaican big brother' the play was fine, however it was hard to get into as the audience were bad, talking throughout most of the first half, there was arguing, people shouting out inappropriately, people eating loud (someone had chicken and chips), people coming in late and to top it off the chairs at the top have low backs and are too close to each other so that was uncomfortable.
The play was funny and it managed to remind people about our role in stopping the violence on the streets. The play was alright
S. F.
Boroughs United by the Crib was amazing the talent was great and the cause was served. Save lives of our youth with celebrations of talent. Some staff was nice, the kids had a great time.
M. J.
Shabby, drinks served in plastic and very uninviting.
T. B.
The Empire, which began as a turn-of-the-century music hall, has been upgraded and modernised into a vibrant independent theatre, and survives as a stalwart part of London's popular entertainment scene. The main theatre's rococo interior is exuberantly kitsch and beautiful. The programme is strong on musical theatre and children's shows (including a popular annual panto) but also hosts comedy nights and spoken word.
K. A.
Amazing. Been coming for years to panto now but this one was particularly superb x
p. a.
Great old theatre style venue not too big you can't see but big enough to get an atmosphere going , staff helpful
H. R.
Always love support Hackney Empire whenever I can
K. W.
Lovely old theatre
L. L.
Beautiful theatre. Aladdin Panto was fantastic, although Aladdin being a girl....was a BIG mistake...panto is aimed at kids and it's unnecessarily confusing and distracting having a girl play a role widely known as a boy's role and have her continue to be referenced as a boy throughout (he, brother, son), especially when SHE has long brown hair and sparkly hotpants!?!? (it just makes it harder to believe), we had kids that were constantly saying but she's a girl, Aladdin's not a girl...which spoiled the experience a little bit for us all.
The 5 stars is for the performance and ambience...Clive Rowe absolutely outstanding...Tony Timberlake (boooo) also outstanding..Tony Whittle and the lady who played the Genie were also masters of their craft.
Well done great production...however please consider making the gender issue a non issue...especially when kids are involved...less headache for us parents...lets keep panto (at least!) traditional ;)
S. g.
great atmosphere, excellent show, went to see bad boys, with Richard Blackwood and slim, I am not a person that laughs easily, but I started smiling , from the offset, and then I couldn't contain myself, and started laughing, anytime these two have a show, count me in.
D. A.
One of the very few examples left of this type of music halls . Great atmosphere .Lovely theatre shows and pantomimes. Well worth a visit
J. G.

Hackney Empire is a Victorian building that is great in the outside (it is 100+ years old) and is part of the Hackney Cultural centre. The shows there are cheap but interesting and for the whole family. I love it there and it is a great community centre too. You gotta get there.
G. W.
Lovely old venue. But that also has its downside, the seats are really cramped and not very comfortable. View was good though
H. B.
Was great ... Bartenders are really friendly and helpful... Especially one man with the beard wearing a beanie that went out his why to help me get the drink I did not know I wanted :) 😉
a. l.

Could not get on with the website but live locally so visited. Very helpful young man. Tickets were sold out for the area I wanted, and think might have got them if website was clearer, but it could have been my ineptitude.
m.
6 tickets for David O'Doherty and Sara Pascoe at the Hackney Empire on Friday 7th.
Seats in the Stalls: I28, I29, I30, J28, J29, J30.
Cover price only - will get the physical paper tickets to you. £25 each. Preference given to someone taking all tickets.
S. K.
The seating is so cramped on the upper circle... The opera and the sound was very good but the surtitles needed to be on a larger board. Were difficult to read.
A. A.
I went to watch The Flute and it was magical and fantastic to watch. Great cast of actors and lovely ambient. 4.5 stars!
W. A.
A beautiful Victorian era theatre that presents a wide variety of entertainment
J. G.
A lovely venue with friendly staff. The English Touring Opera production of Weill's The Silver Lake, was brilliant!
J. H.
Avenue Q was great and the theater was also good but reduced one star as was very hot without air-conditioning and the seats were not that very comfy.
J. K.
Beautiful venue but could do with a bit of a dusting and some air conditioning, it's so soo hot inside
R. H.
We always have a great time when we come, and try not to miss any of English Touring Opera's visits. I love that there is a bar in the Stalls
A. W.
A stunning old-fashioned ornate theatre with lots of atmosphere. When the ghost of Hamlet's father appeared in the dress circle it was no surprise.
