Wow what a wonderful experience I had when I visited this film studio on one of the Open days. It is a living, working business in the heart of London. They make films here and also period costume for movies such as the Queen.
The staff are knowledgeable and very skilled at what they do as well as welcoming to visitors. I was made to feel as if I was a welcomed friend and that they wanted as many people as possible to get involved in their history.
They have a membership access to special events and welcome students of history and film to their library.
Well worth the visit.

Extraordinary, quirky, fiercely independent and magical. A national and local treasure for film making, costume creation and craftsmanship. The owners (who have lived in Rotherhithe since before the warehouses were fully inhabitable) train and recruit locals in embroidery, needlework and costume design. They service the UK film industry at large specialising in period pieces and the studios are often used as a rehearsal space. Also host an eclectic programme of events for the local community including film nights to charity fundraisers (sometimes with very famous faces). You can visit on studio open days or during one of their events. My mother in law who is a textile teacher visited when over from Australia and it was by far one of the highlights of her trip.

A very unique, quirky, whimsical place to visit! situated near the Brunel Museum & Mayflower & Ship pubs. Very close to the Thames river.
2 minute walk from Rotherhithe overground station.
Its a very old warehouse-like an Aladdins cave & many stage props everywhere & paintings, statues, costumes (made for recent films-Little Women etc)
Even the loos are lovingly decorated & homely!
People are very friendly & welcoming.
A film showing area-with armchairs & sofas on a graduated floor.
Stage & theatre area up stairs.
They make films there too.
Give a donation at the Film night & other events are on most evenings.
Like a little oasis... :-):-):-)

Came here on an open doors day and got a guided tour of the studios. Fantastic tour given by 3 members of the studio talking about the making costumes, making props and personally found most interesting the talk by Olivier about integrated film production. The tour includes a chance to visit the costume store, prop making workshop, a theatre as well as the library/archives of the studios. Fantastic

Major supplier of props and costumes to TV and Film Production companies, Sands have an astonishing variety of exhibits on their premises, which are themselves old and authentic. The associated cinema is comfortable and has an interesting selection of films.

This is a proper studio with proper people making proper costumes and more.
The degeee of skill, imagination and craft you find here is unprecedented. And all delivered in a kindly neighbourly way - that reflects kindly on the lovely heritage and people of Rotherhide. Shafted and torn apart by development this really has the spirit of this lovely part of London imprinted on the people inside, its building and all that happens within it's historic walls. Long may it continue to enrich us.

Skip Leicester Square Odeon and check out the Sands Studios film club. They host regular film nights in a small room - with a chat afterwards. Worth checking out just to meet the regulars. Is part of a community run studio that's produced costumes for some major films. Ship pub near by is perfect for post&pre drinks - but arrive early to get a coffee and survey the scene.

It was a really interesting place to visit. The staffs there were nice and makes you feel welcoming. I will love to go back for other types of events to see other spaces that they have within.
