Reviews of Southwark Playhouse
I. V.
Went to see "Anyone can whistle" with a friend. We were 10min late and there is no latecomers policy in the theatre- it is very small, there is no way to get to your seat without disturbing the performance. We didn't know, it was quite unfortunate that we had to skip the first part. The performance was great, though! Budget production, yes, but so much talent and very unusual choices of costumes, makeup, etc. Nice diversity of the cast as well. Great musical, definitely recommend it, lots of fun!
L. F.
A warm welcome at the door. Friendly staff and a superb play, Indecent proposal. I would love to have seen a twist where the man receives the proposal. Original songs and great actors. A fabulous night out. Such a quaint venue, so emersive.
R. B.
Absolutely great. Friendly atmosphere. Pizza baked on spot ok but could do with more food choices. Performance of Romeo & Juliet absolutely outstanding!
B. R.
A wonderful theatre with lovely, welcoming staff. Their productions are never boring, always willing to try something new. One of the venues which shows that London’s very best theatre is happening off-West-End these days - and at very reasonable process, too.
A. P.
Went to watch Operation Mincemeat and thoroughly enjoyed the show/venue. Staff were very friendly/accommodating and the theatre space was great.
J.
Fantastic hidden gem of off-West End London theatre!
Such high quality productions in such modest facilities are delivered at bargain prices - a truly great theatre!
R.
It was our first time here last week to see Sondheim’s ‘Anyone Can Whistle’ and we thought it was such a unique and interesting venue. We loved the atmosphere in the bar area and the inclusivity posters. Volunteers were lovely and you can see why they do it - lovely venue!
T. R. T.
Perfect theatre experience at an independent venue just around the corner from Elephant and Castle Tube Station, really easy to find and with a varied programme of events including musicals and plays, truly something for everyone! There's a lovely café/bar serving snacks and drinks (both alcohol and also coffee/tea), with super friendly staff to greet you at reception and in the bar area. Love this place, it's a beautiful thing! 🎭
P. C.
Lovely, warm and intimate setting. Romeo and Juliet was fantastic the script, actors and actresses put on a first class performance. A wonderful night out in a wonderful setting.
J. S.
A perfect neighbourhood arts theatre, the point is the play and production, not the paintwork. Run down and ill kempt in a good way. And nice bar area.
L. O.
Watched a brilliant show here. Staff are welcoming & engaging and the cute lil cafe/ pizzeria just beyond the foyer is a good place to relax a while after/ before a show.
B. J.
Excellent and intimate theatre with the guitar virtuoso, the Lion taking a well deserved centre stage and the bar/cafe providing light relief before the performance.
I. M.
I really enjoyed this small, arty theater. It has a boho vibe and the play was excellent.
R.
We went here to their show called "Seussical". We sat in a ~200 person room.
The show was absolutely amazing. The actors were very good, and made the audience laugh almost the whole time. Especially the person playing the cat was extraordinary
The "Seussical" show runs till the end of december, so be sure to check it out if you havent yet!
S. F.
Absolutely Brilliant. Loved the adaptation. Actors were cast perfectly. Amazing singers that blew my mind. 100% recommend. You won't be dissapointed. Perfect girls night out!
P. H. R. F.
Went to watch Tokyo Rose (10/10 show, by the way) and shared a vegan margherita pizza with a friend. we got there a bit tight on time but the order came through very quickly. you could tell the ingredients were of high quality! staff, from bar and door/ticket checker to ushers were super helpful and friendly. nice and intimate theatre!
M. R.
Max Alexander -Talylor magnificent in the one man show 'The Lion'. What a talent he is!
D. S.
Brilliant performance of Romeo and Juliet and bar and cafe very nice and reasonable priced but auditorium far too small and very cramped and uncomfortable when you have to sit for 1hr 40 mins without moving it spoilt the play for me.
G.
Intimate theatre which showcases many new writers and plays. Has a good churn of new productions. Nice bar area.
G. T.
My first visit recently a great theatre and bar a fraction of West end theatres. I saw Romeo and Juliet give it a go I loved it.
R. L. J.
Always a friendly, busy, happily shabby theatre with lots of good vibes and enthusiastic audiences. Never seen a dud production there.
I. P.
Saw the Seussical show here. Really good and fun show. Very colourful with beautiful story and vocals.
The playhouse is super easy to get to from Elephant & Castle station. About 10 minute walk.
Friendly staff too with reasonably priced drinks that had a limited but nice cocktail menu. They had a 10% student discount too at the time I went (13th December 2018)
P. H.
A bit run down and it could do with a coat of paint. Staff very helpful. Good range of drinks at the bar.
F. P. A.
What a great place in E&C for some unusual theater performances at a reasonable price. Today's Drag lipsync' show was very entertaining and witty and put a smile on my face. The staff is friendly and they serve tasty beer at reasonable prices at the bar! Thanks for an awesome night!
R. H.
When in London we always try to visit off-West End theaters. This time we stumbled upon the Southwark Playhouse. And what a joy it was!The atmosphere was friendly, with people of all sorts and age, drinks at the bar, volunteers helping you around and a stage in the middle (we had a show in Little) so the actors were within an arm's reach. Theatres like this are the foundation for theatre, so go there to watch good and bad plays, have a theatrical experience as it is supposed to be, and give the Playhouse the support it needs.
N. L.
I came here with a friend during my last visit to London to see Bananaman. It seemed like a fun little show to entertain ourselves for a night, and we got tickets at a fantastic price on TodayTix, so we were excited for our night out.
Honestly I don't think either of us expected that much because it is a pretty small theatre, but it was really very nice! The lobby is wonderful, with a full bar which also has a kitchen (so if you don't feel like finding a restaurant to eat at before your show the menu at the playhouse looked pretty nice). It was comfortable and relaxing.
The theatre itself was very cute. The set fully surrounded by comic panels, and the performance was so much fun. I have seen multiple shows on the West End and I would definitely recommend this theatre to someone who wants to try something a little bit different for their night out.
M. C.
Great little theatre. Operation Mincemeat is the best show I've seen since Les Mis. The show is exceptional. Fabulous cast, amazing music, wonderful lyrics . The accolades could go on. Go see it and enjoy.
I. H.
Great little theatre that I'd not been to before. The production of Operation Mincemeat was excellent.
P. C.
Our first visit to a gem of a small theatre. Excellent production.
A. S.
First time and loved it. Great space, great show, great staff. Will definitely be back.
L. A.
Great staff, good space. Sometimes the shows aren't good!🙄
K. A.
Went here to see Oscar Wilde's Salome as performed and adapted by the Lazarus Theatre group. Small but intimate stage position between to sides of the seated audience. A great adaptation of a classic story, told in a modernised style.
S. S.
Saw Operation Mincemeat. It was sold out, but I put my name down for returns, and they phoned me this afternoon. So box office staff really care about getting those tickets out there. The show was superb
And no queue for the loos! Though big queue for the bar. Lovely volunteer staff, and a great atmosphere.
L.
Super chill staff and a lovely way to see some great theatre
A. F.
Nice intimate theatre with a nice bar café. At present only every other row has seats, for covid-secure reasons. This has the advantage of giving you a lot more legroom! However it can't do anything for the economics if the theatre.
C. J. F.
Southwark playhouse should never, ever allow irregardless of whatever the nature of a play maybe, NO SMOKING by stage actresses, as was the case in a recent production I attended of Yellowfin on Friday 5th November. One of the stage actresses named Marianne lit up a cigarette not once, but twice during the performance annoying to do so, but made it uncomfortable on account of the fact the venue/stage/room was poorly ventilated and warm so cigarette smoke spread around, making attendees cough.
Lighting up cigarettes by the actress in this particular play had no bearing whatsoever in any remote way to contributing to the play/plot development of Yellowfin. The play/acting, in general was good. Yes! I did read the ad before, smoking during performance. In my opinion, though permitted was done so with complete lack of foresight as no thought was given to the paying attendees whom had to sit through the play, likely and indeed in some instances were uncomfortable with cigarette smoke drifting through the air! so much so 2 people walked out..I don't blame them at all they were right to do so! So disappointed!
B. S.
What's not to love? The friendly staff? The amazing drinks available at the bar? The culture? The hand gel on every table? Get along to this place pronto! PS The shows are good too! 😉
M. B.
I love this theatre so much. Great productions, welcoming space, lovely staff and a great bar. The pay as you go theatre tickets are totally worth it
W. y. C.
Only went to the bar, it was quiet and they serve pizza.
S. F.
Have been going to Southwark Playhouse since they were in Tooley Street. Great venue showing a unique selection of plays. I recommend getting the 'PAYG subscription' where you get 5 tickets in advance in bulk and use them as you find things you want to see.
Saw Bananaman The Musical this time and it was fantastic! Great fun. Great performance and made even better for being in such an intimate setting.
S. S.
Great show. Colourful fun and a little bit camp.
H. W.
A very cosy theatre, but the people there were very friendly and helpful. Also the show was fantastic, especially for the good value price. Definitely worth a visit.
M. B.
Revival of Anyone can whistle. A musical for today!! Loved it.
D. P.
Not the most luxurious of theatres, but very friendly, and "Operation Mincemeat" is even better on second visit!
P. D.
A great little bar. Charming, cosy and easily socially distanced. And you're supporting an incredible independent theatre while they're closed. Would definitely recommend. They even let you get deliveroo - so there's no reason to queue at MM!
D. W.
Great little venue with some outstanding productions
S. L.
Small intimate theatre with a bohemian vibe. The bar is quaint but great atmosphere where you can easy chat to others. Inside the restroom facilities were clean. The staging was excellent and the seating fantastic as you could see from all directions. Would highly recommend it for an evening.
J. D.
High quality productions at a low price. A more intimate experience than West End theatres. Especially good for fun musicals.
K. A.
We saw the inventive The Trench here and loved it. It’s a great theatre and every seat has a good view of the stage
M. R.
Well run venue. In the studio, the seats are the fairly basic bench variety but the cushioning makes them comfortable enough.
V. L.
The bar here is not bad although often very busy and sometimes not everything on the menu/drinks list is available. It is convenient though and has some nice seating.
The theatre space is not bad. It can be a little rudimentary and seating is basic, so you may want to bring a cushion!
H. S.
Saw Lion here this afternoon.
Utterly brilliant.
p. f.
Aspects of love. Wow! Really love this venue. Theatre in the round, such an intimate space. Everyone who works there seems really enthused by the place. Nice bar well stocked with surprisingly reasonable prices. Love all the nooks and crannies in this building makes for a really interesting overall experience. It will be interesting to see if they can recreate the intimacy in their new home when they move. Well done everybody at Southwark Playhouse.
M. P.
I've been to two previous incarnations of the Southwark playhouse. This venue has two spaces, called descriptively the "large" and the "little". They are both flexible spaces, allowing multiple stage set ups, from traditional stages to plays in the round and even, on one occasion, a recreation of a world war 1 trench. The spaces lack the atmosphere of the previous venue under the London bridge arches, although I imagine it makes the set designers' lives a bit simpler - and I haven't noticed any rumbling train noises, which had punctured many a poignant moment...
The bar has a reasonable range of craft drinks, and serves food from a small kitchen. There are not quite enough seats if you turn up late, although the crowd often thins out due to staggered performance times. Sometimes you can even see the performers and crew in the bar after the play.
Which brings me to the reason we are there - the plays. The venue is small, but offers an eclectic mix of shows. They often have children friendly performances, especially around Christmas. Most plays generally fall on the experimental side, whether with new writing or revivals. With small venue sizes, most performances are intimate - and the venue remains one of my favourite theatres in London, even if I'll always miss the damp and claustrophobic previous venue.
M. B.
You would think a small theatre couldn't handle West-End standard performances but, let me tell you, you're wrong. When I saw the Trench perform on this venue it absolutely blew my mind and became my favourite piece of theatre. They have many other cool plays at affordable prices and a bar at the entrance so you know you'll have a good time.
e. c.
Salome was an outstanding powerful production.
D. E.
Came to watch the fabulous show by Christina Modestou last night (25.10.2020) and in addition to the wonderful entertainment, the venue did an amazing job at ensuring it was Covid-secure. Controlled exit and entry, drinks delivered to your seats and individually screened seating to protect households. Even toilet usage was well organised and controlled.
The crowd-control volunteers and the staff alike were friendly and welcoming whilst ensuring social distancing was constantly promoted. Thanks Southwark Playhouse for safely giving us back some showtime in these crazy times.
M. A.
The place was small, although it didn't hamper the performance and the cast was fabulous. The prices for a soft drink was very pricey i.e a coke was £2.65..., the cafe/eating area was run down and had mismatched furniture, (possiblyhoing for an eclectic vibe)..some of the chairs had torn seats. All in all, whilst I really enjoyed the show, the the theatre and amenities left a lot to be desired.
C. “. B.
Can't wait to be back here!
Last visit was Covid secure and I felt very safe. The screens between seats work and do not detract from the experience.
Always a cracking performance in an intimate space.
J. F.
Small but intimate venue showing good quality off west end theatre.
s. R.
Great venue and lovely atmosphere.
S. S.
Small theatre but very intimate, you feel you are involved in the performance
M. H.
One of the most intimate spaces to watch a musical with full production values and high quality cast. A friendly atmosphere with great staff who seem to care about the show that's on. Also has new writing well with seeing again in an intimate setting. It's easy to get to and will worth a visit.
V. T.
Visited here to watch the play 'The Rink' one of the best I've ever seen, great music and cast. The venue is small which is great as makes it an intimate show and makes you feel really part of the action. Comfortable seats and well stocked bar.
D. B.
Great show, fantastic music and a fabulous cast. Robert Redford has changed a bit since the original though!
K. M.
Excellent small theatre - worth negotiating Elephant and Castle to get there. Great to be so close to the performers. And a decent sized bar at the entrance. Current play Afterglow is brilliantly performed.
f. m.
We attended the little theatre. It is very intimate with a great view of the stage which is basically the floor of the room.
Reasonably priced drinks that you can take in with you. Well worth a visit if you fancy seeing something that is on.
J. H.
We saw a play at the little venue which is a very intimate space. The front row is a couple of feet from the stage. The bench seating is padded but I don't think I would be too pleased to sit there for a long performance. However a nice venue with a good atmosphere.
M. K.
Wonderful atmosphere. Excellent play abd production. Hope to visit again next time I'm in London.
I. M.
Beautiful and characterful theatre space with excellent bar that opens @ 5.30 and a venue for inspiring theatre.
N. J.
Came for the first time on a whim having moved to the area. Having been to mostly West End shows (as well as Shakespeare's globe and Broadway), I didn't know to expect, and I can only say I was let speechless. It was a very intimate experience, and the quality of the play direction and acting was world class. I will be coming back in a heartbeat and highly recommend it!!
w. “.
I really like this theatre. The staff are superb, as are the volunteer ushers. The bar is well stocked, there is plenty of seating and everything is wheelchair accessible. No kitchen but there's a fabulous food market thingo directly across the street.
The theatres, themselves, are small (even the large one) which makes for a very intimate experience. It's run down but in a well-loved sort of way. The way Fortnum and Masons used to be before they did it up and stole its soul. I think there are plans to renovate Southwark theatre, too. I hope they don't go the same way. Also, they have a pay as you go option where you can buy a block of tickets at a very reduced price. They are valid at every show and don't expire.
S. A. S.
I love this place, the shows that get put on here are really good! We had a great time. Such a good vibe!
M. L. F.
I really loved this quirky little modern theatre. There are two spaces within the Playhouse; the little (holding 120 people) and the large (240 capacity) as well as a bar/cafe area. I wish I’d known that they did food prior to turning up as I would have eaten here rather than the pub up the road. I just loved the atmosphere of the place with the eclectic decoration and furniture. The play took place in the little space which led to a very intimate experience, even more so due to the fact that you had to cross the stage to get to your seats.
B. D.
Cosy intimate space perfect for an intense theatrical experience
A. P.
If you like small, intimate theatre experiences, this is it. Good, friendly staff, if you want an interval drink the Portuguese white was perfect, and you can take glassware/cups into the auditorium, no plastic! Highly recommend.
J. R.
I've seen some outstanding shows here in the last 18 months. Top quality performances and direction of superb and often little known shows at a great bargain price. Don't hesitate. My one caveat is that companies are often very white and considering the theatre is located in one of the most multi-cultural areas of London, the artistic team needs to do far more to reflect the profile of the community that surrounds it.
J. B.
Great little shabby-chic theatre, about 15 minute walk from London Bridge. You enter into a café area which was very cosy and the food/ drink looked great.
We were here to see Operation Mincemeat (11 out of 10 would recommend to everyone), the stage was good, seats at the side would've been a bit duff but my father in law who was right at the end still loved it. The seats were padded benches, not uncomfortable, the toilets were small and crowded and falling behind a bit, but here's why I give it 4 stars …. this is an independent small theatre competing with the west-end in a location that doesn't get much foot traffic, and they are doing fantastically and deserve your support.
M. P.
First time visiting this intimate theatre space. Totally suited to a one act play which just happened to be really good too. Enjoyed a drink in the bar beforehand. I'd like to see something else at this venue in future.
S. R.
Absolute hidden gem. Grab dinner in mercato over the road beforehand. We were in the little theatre and saw other people’s money - quite frankly the whole experience blew me away. The intimacy of the venue, the quality of the acting (some of the most natural and authentic i’ve Seen) the staging, the staff and the bar were all excellent. Can not recommend highly enough - when you do find a gem like this sometimes you want to keep it all to yourself. This place is setting the standard for theatre. Will come back again and again.
L. H.
Good play Romeo & Juliet but really hot inside making it uncomfortable
m. m.
We went to the seussical musical. Though the stories are children's stories, the musical was great. The cat was playing the perfect role between storie teller and brat. We would go there once more! Good for children and adults. The venue is nice, small and perfect for the interaction with the public. Thanks a lot!
C. C.
Really great evening and being able to enjoy live cabaret again
S. J.
Love Southwark play house and have been going here for a few years having been introduced to it by a friend. I have eatchdf many performances here covering genres from Shakespeare, to comedy, musicals, children's shows and drama and have enjoyed all of them.
It's a shame they have stopped serving food as it was nice simple grub and very convenient if visiting here anyway.
The disappointing thing about the Playhouse is that they don't allow you to buy concessions tickets for weekend evening performances which seems a little unfair but I would definitely recommend it as they have something for everyone.
J. J.
This theatre offers an exciting atmosphere. The bar area is very open and gives an interesting buzz of the feel of being 'underground'. The theatre space is very intimate, where performers engage very personally with the audience. The staff are helpful, energetic and approachable.
O. L.
Seats are too close together. Booking an aisle seat is highly recommended. And the toilet smell wafted into the theatre space!
If you leave during the show there is no reentry.
G. J.
Imaginative use of space to give stages and a bar area. Not far from the Elephant. Fringe theatre basically, with some promising productions. Staff are polite, the seats fairly comfortable and sightlines are good.
P. C.
They put on some amazing shows. Look at reviews of them. I really like the fact that the bar is open after the performances, usually until midnight The bar is just a good place to go even if you're not going to the theatre, and the prices are very reasonable for the area.
R. W.
Friendly off-west end theatre but very easily accessible. Nice cafe/bar. On-screen and the play's are an eclectic and imaginative mix well staged and acted. Ticket prices cheap too!
N. T.
This is one of the best off-west-end venues going, the bar sells good drinks for a good price, and good food also. Must have seen about 7 productions here and they have all been truly excellent. Facilities are good, close to Elephant and Castle, Waterloo, and London Bridge.
H. K.
This is a super theatre space with great quality productions. There's also a nice bar and they serve reasonably priced food. I would have given it 5 stars except that it was a little hot and stuffy and a bit cramped in the auditorium.
M. J.
I've been to this venue a few times but the current production of AFTERGLOW is a must-see.
Exquisitely observed.
Sensitively written.
Outstandingly convincing performances from all three actors.
Deserves more attention.
DO NOT MISS
Mike, Arundel, West Sussex
J. L.
Warehouse type theatre no frills but excellent productions. Fill your boots at prices well below West End. If you want plush carpets and elaborate sets this is not for you (although a chandelier does hover incongruously over the concrete floor in one area). Oil drums and cable reels function as tables. If you want first class acting you won't be disappointed. Enjoy.
w. m.
Brilliantly authentic play house with character, you get so close to the action its almost interactive, saw the play DANGLING, loved it, truly great acting from all the cast. The story unfolds really well and you can never tell how its going to end at any stage, so you cant take your eyes of it. Very refreshing. Highly recommend, I can see myself returning soon.
A. Y.
Came here for Fiji Land with my friend at The Little - their smaller theatre. I absolutely loved the layout which gives a more intimate feel to the show. The bar itself is a nice place to hang out and they serve many drinks and food. A good place to catch up before and after a show.
C. R.
Great spaces considering their origin and the company has done well adapting them to their needs, aside from noisy air handling systems, which are generally switched off during the show. The cafe serves what they call 'meals' but are in fact just microwaved chunks of frozen food with a bit of spinach on the side but the atmosphere is congenial and the staff helpful and friendly.
Unfortunately the show we saw had ear splittingly high volume sound cues but that will vary depending on the individual production of course.
E. H.
A fabulous independent venue, attracting some very good shows, and balancing the right amount of shabby with chic to make it a very trendy looking place.
I went to see Kiki's delivery service here, and it was an exceptionally fun performance. The seating is well tiered, and it doesn't feel like there is much disparity in how good the view from different seats are.
All in all, if you're looking at a show here, go for it!
J. G.
A great little set up, great performance space and bar area. Accessible for all and easy to get to (halfway between Elephant and castle and Borough tube stations). Go early and eat across the road ... it's what I did.
P. E.
Now that they have allocated seating it is an excellent night's out - tremendous production values and well-established performers in clever productions. They will know that the facilities need a little more attention and I imagine that will soon be a thing of the past
J. M.
Loved the show, the music, the singers and dancers were absolutely brilliant.
Wanted to join in, wonderful mix of nostalgia and humour. So close to the artists that you felt part of it.
H. M.
Always worth checking out what's on at the playhouse, excellent revivals of off Broadway musicals as well as intense and interesting straight plays. All at an affordable price. Check out their pay as you go offers.
E. M.
Friendly staff and a cosy venue. Smooth ticketing. Seats have good view of the stage even when I was seated at the side of the back row. They have a bar which does student discount as well as a discount off food and drinks post-performance for ticket holders.
M. P.
Great performance space, nice well-stocked buzzy public bar, does food too if you get there by 8. The current Toxic Avenger musical is possibly the most entertaining and hilarious two hours of theatre I have seen in my life.
M. B.
Lovely theatre, however 2 complaints. The first is that with the show being packed full, there was limited space to stand inside. The second was that the sound system was a bit too loud. Other than that, it was lovely.
B. M.
Shows are typically original, engaging, innovative and well executed. Be it the Toxic avenger, the wacky Bananaman, the classic Rink or Benjamin Button Cornwall style you will not be disappointed. Keep hydrated though, it gets a bit sweaty and toasty when it is full house. Love the Playhouse.
H. W. (.
Great location, friendly local theatre with great beers on draft. I saw "These Trees are made of Blood" which was absolutely fantastic. Cannot recommend it enough - I will definitely be keeping an eye on what else is showing here.
P. J.
Great performance of Mr Pippin. Fun night. Enjoy how intimate the experience feels. While its capacity isn't huge from most seats you get a good view of the show.
N. W.
A small but intimate performance space. Bar area is welcoming with a number of seating areas and staff are lovely. Nice and close to Elephant and Castle underground
M. B.
Really enjoyed the production of "Potted Panto". The cast were brilliant! 😀
J. A.
Intimate off-West End theatre near the Elephant & Castle. Easy to get to via bus or tube (Borough tube station) and a third the price of the West End. Actors usually have a wide experience coumtry-wide and plays/musicals can be interesting and enjoyable. Food and drink available as well.
L. N.
Intimate theatre setting and great productions. Was a bit late coming to the last show I saw here and staff were very friendly and considerate letting us into the show at the appropriate time.
K. B.
Lovely helpful staff, interesting shows and an intimate cozy space. Good drinks too, lovely even with social distancing in mind and very enjoyable.
H. E.
Such a fun day with the Potted Panto. Really great way to go to panto without the boring bits between. Brilliant. Ashers and Bar staff very friendly. Venue really easy bus ride from London Bridge.
J. S.
Full audience due to simple but effective transparent screens deviding seating. Did not distract from performance which was positively engaging.
S. M.
Fairly basic venue, with no reserved seating on benches, this intimate theatre is reminiscent of many Edinburgh Fringe venues. Nice, relaxed bar with plenty seating and good drinks selection.
W. R.
Two theatres..The Large and the Small with impressive productions of musicals and plays. There is a bar and simple food available. A fringe institution although it has moved premises in the past.
N. M.
Lovely informal, relatively small theater. All seats were close to the performers.
Spacious bar. Really nice and close to public transport.
A. C.
Fantastic venue. Friendly staff. Powerful fringe theatre.
A. S.
Saw bring it on on Friday. Dont go if you are expecting a copy of the original film or if you are hard of hearing. Do go if you enjoy the music of Lin-Manuel - could definitely tell he was involved (without needing to put his name on the poster). Lyrics were catchy and the choreography on point. But they really need to test the sound/mic set up because half of the cast couldnt be heard and I was third row.
S. R.
Brilliant, that they have managed to open and put on a show. What a treat to see a live performance. Well done Southwark Playhouse.
S. T.
Lovely & light bar with a good selection of beers, a different amazing sell-off ciders. Two stages, large & small. Friend day staff and everything decently priced. A gem of a place.
K. A.
Best value for money in London for theatre especially if you buy the Pay as you go Carnet. Seen some of the best plays in this Playhouse. From Napalm Blast to Cassa Valentina, The Apartment to The Rink to Life and Xanadu priceless productions and performances. If you live in London and you love to be educated this place is a must for you.
a. b.
Amazing! My boyfriend and I saw Suesical The Musical, full of energy, colour, laughs and amazing actors, dancers and singers!! Incredible voices. Is a must see.
M. S.
Mother Courage and her children is a famous play superbly performed and acted at the Playhouse. You will need to get background details if you are to fully appreciate the play. That said - enjoy
B. B.
Beautiful venue with the most excellent staff. Always feel welcome plus their theatre programming is brilliant
F. H.
A theatre and a pub. What a great combination. While the theatre shows some very good fringe plays the pub provides a nice selection of reasonably priced beers in a cool and friendly atmosphere. Check it out.
A. S.
I'm going to try and not let the awful cabaret-esque show I saw here taint my review of the venue, because the Southwark Playhouse is really quite a find.
It's tucked away behind a pub and has an industrial, slightly rickety charm. With the stone walls and distinct lack of a stage, it certainly doesn't look like a theatre. But it really works.
Appearances aside, the Southwark Playhouse sells very cheap drinks on a Saturday night - £2.80 for a vodka and coke. Virtually unheard of in London.
F. H.
Great little theatre. Every play I've seen here has been to a very high standard. Nice bar and good sandwiches for a bite to eat.
R. M.
Saw Tom Cat recently and it was a fantastic space for the show. Nice sharing nibbles, and a varied selection of drinks. It's not too far a walk from Elephant and Castle station.
M. E.
A gem of a theatre with ambitious and varied programming. Always top quality. Bar does snacks and light meals and always hopping before a show.
S. P.
I had been here before and really liked it, but I have been after the lockdown and the measures that they put in place to permit social distancing are amazing, they made me feel super safe!
M. E.
Excellent venue giving very personal experience of the play, which was very moving. Very professional performance of For King and Country. Would highly recommend both theatre and play.
M. F.
Very important venue with consistently great work!
R. A.
Nice rustic bar before heading in for the show. The theatre is rough around the edges but that's fringe for you. Staff were all really friendly.
A. S.
SP is always a comfortable place to spend time. The productions are innovative and first class. I suggest getting the newsletter for some brilliant Off West End theatre.
K. N. C.
Lovely, intimate theater.
C. W.
Great spaces, good bar, nice staff, and of course a fantastic variety of shows. And great good at Mercato Metropolitano opposite!
J. M.
I saw the Curious case of Benjamin Button in June and was blown away with the performance. I adore the close proximity you have with the actors in this theatre, the ambiance almost integrates you into the play.
L. R.
Fiver is BRILLIANT! So funny, emotional, witty, talented, entertaining and overall great story and acting and singing. Really enjoyed our night!
J. J.
Saw an excellent show in the smaller theatre. Good atmosphere in foyer/ bar area with fresh reasonably priced coffee and snacks.
J. H.
Great show - fantastic to be able to see live theatre again. All covid safe etc
U.
History Unplugged was the first show I've seen here and it hughlights so many things that we may not see in our lives now, hut that contributes to what and who we are. Great show
H. C.
Local, friendly and with great ambience. Not precious like some but offers interesting Theatre, and supporters are local and further afield. Young vibrant and special
M. E.
I enjoy and rate highly Playhouse productions. I used to be a serious fan of their musicals but now the decibel level is ear-shattering and any pleasure is lost in the full-on full volume delivery. I've recently seen Bananaman and Pippin. With Bananaman we could barely understand any lyrics as the actors had to shout over the full on music; with Pippin there was so much reverb in the first half we were tempted to leave. Fortunately this was seriously modified second half.
Great place for a drink though haven't been tempted with the food - we prefer to eat at Mercado Metropolitan across the road. Alternativey vibe with mismatching chairs and tables and 'craft' alcohol.
I. L.
It was great going to see a show and the smaller production
T. S.
Absolutely amazing, my son played Horton at collage, my daughter played Gurtude in her school production.
Scott was amazing and the icing on the cake was meeting Carrie hope Fletcher, my daughter's idol
A. S.
Good relaxed atmosphere. A gem to enjoy
L. i. F.
I was really surprised as I'm not really a theatre person.
But I really enjoyed my visit, well worth it.
Nice bar at the entrance.
C. H.
With 2 theatres in one building there is always something to see. Productions can be a bit hit and miss - sometimes brilliant, sometimes you want to leave at interval.
R. M.
This is a very good place to eat the most tasty food and the service is incredible and don't forget the price
Im feeling like at home
A. C.
One of my favourite theatres in London! I’m blessed to have a local theatre that produces so many great musicals every year.
D. “. B.
Venue was great. An antique industrial feel with a bar, food and really helpful staff.
B. P.
Saw an excellent play tonight. This playhouse has a friendly atmosphere with a bar and two small and intimate theatres.
L. J.
lovely little theatre, really nice beers and a great place to just go and hang out even if you're not there to see a show
J. E.
A lovely little venue for Cabaret-style performance - comfy seats, with plenty of leg room.
Staff are very friendly.
S. M.
Always worth a visit. Great productions and some challenge in their drama. Variety of offers for all and a nice bar too.
P. S.
Brilliant shows. Great bar ambience. Highly recommended.
G. R.
Great small theatre with two spaces. Used to be at London Bridge. In it's new location I have seen (i) Sherlock Holmes, with the cast playing instruments and singing all together (ii) Full scale utterly mesmerising musical of Titanic (not a musical of the film, something much more interesting) (iii) Samurai rabbits Usagi Yojimbo, odd but good (iv) The Cutting Of The Cloth 50s realistic drama. Plus a couple of forgettable pieces .... but those are good odds to see something wonderful. That they are not afraid to try new things, evidently leads frequently to sharing a space with a talented troupe, who are sharing an experience with you. Which is magic.
W. A. R.
It's one of the best venues for live theatre, friendly staff and great beer..
C. J.
Absolute gem of a theatre. This versatile theatre showcases some of the most amazing shows I've ever seen. If you haven't been you must!
m. j.
A lifesaver. Right at the moment my battery went dead, found this spot to charge it and yake a rest. A very innovative idea from Southwalk Council. Every place or some epic places should have one. Missing London already. Such a wonderful place. Technology is already taking over, with the total electric car replacement revolution.
R. C.
Tiny theatre at Elephant & Castle with lots of passion, which gets an extra star because the glass of Viognier I had was the best glass of white wine I have had in a London theatre for ages.
S. P.
Small but very professional theatre company - two venues: The Large and The Little (unsurprisingly the smaller of the two and generally showing less popular or high-profile productions). Bar and restaurant for pre and post-theatre food.
S. J.
Really cool little theatre, don't some great shows at reasonable prices. I also had lasagne and a beer for just over £11, which is not bad.
T. T.
Lovely theatre space, seem some great productions here. Good bar, not eaten here, but food looks good.
M. B.
Lovely cosy Theatre, Excellent staff, needed help because am Partially Disabled, they were quick to help. Seen Dear Brutus Saturday really enjoyed it. Thanks
M. C.
I loved it. We saw Banana Man which was awesome anyway but I'll definitely come back to this lovely, quirky, no-frills but brilliant and friendly venue very soon.
m. b.
Had a great time seeing bananaman the musical. Great fun. Bar a little bit expensive but don't begrudge them as the tickets were cheap.
J. E.
What a gem of a theatre, hidden away near the Elephant and Castle, small, intimate theatre with brilliant productions, every play or show I've seen there has been top notch!
J. H.
Lovely little theatre. Buzzing bar. Very reasonable tickets. Great plays. Hidden little gem.
p. l.
Brilliant theatre - always interesting productions while their musicals tend to be of the very highest standard. Love, love, love this place.
T. M.
Great fun, puts on good shows, and they let you take drinks in. In hot weather it’s extremely uncomfortable though.
M. D.
Brilliant small independent theatre. Small theatre big productions. I saw Pippin here and it was brilliant. The cast were amazing.
V. 3.
Went to a Bertol Brecht mother courage play here, which was great, and enjoyed the venue. Also a good place to have some drinks or food after the play.
P. B.
A wonderful alternative playhouse, showing a mix of new plays by upcoming playwrights,
plus plays from the theatre fringe and pre West End.
A. M.
Great little community theatre with a nice bar area. Quality of productions tend to be quite good.
N. H.
Very small for a theatre, but me and my family still really loved their production of Kiki"s Delivery service.
H. G. K.
Nice bar. Interesting scheduling. Great local theatre. Often has hit sold out shows.
D. J.

A. M.
Great theatre, interesting shows often with well known cast. Good snacks and bar.
C. D.
Have seen a couple of great shows here... decent café / bar area for hanging out in before and after the show, they also serve food
J. B.
Bit tricky to find if you aren't a local but worth it. Nice to have this kind of place free from West End sales with concentration on the theatre not the marketing.
L. T.
Great theatre, really nice being that close to the stage, made for a very intimate performance
A.
"The Life" was excellent! Great productions. A trendy feel. Decent snacks + drinks. Not a bad seat in the house!
C. D. S.
Auditoriums may be small, but if you want to feel the vibe go no further. Never experienced theatre like this before!

Play v v good. Venue a bit scruffy now outside. But due to relocate soon. Chairs not that comfy and small. But overall a good experience because of the play.
G. C.
Great independent venue! Playhouses are cosy with a great view of the show and the staff and drink options are great!
A. C.
Brilliant cinema with great positioning of the seats for all to see. The seats do rock forwards and backwards a bit. I fear what having a person behind me would do to the experience
A. T.
We just saw Dear Brutus for the second time, it was even more brilliant the second time around, Southwark Playhouse certainly puts on some fabulous plays!
i. c.
Fantastic local venue, and the current 'Ballad of Robin Hood' a real tonic, and the actors committed to immersing the audience in a lovely wee tale - with flashing swords!
G. J.
I like this small London theatre. There are two performance spaces and I've been to great shows in both.
I. d. C.
