Reviews of Spencer House

The house and tour were wonderful. Unfortunately they do not allow photos in all but two rooms (a very outdated rule). They are only open on Sundays, so plan accordingly. The guide was very informative, but oversold the house's ability to be rented out for use as an event space. The house seems to only be open due to requirements that some objects on loan be accessible to the public. Also disappointing that the rear gardens are not open to the public.
P. S.
The organized tour covers history of the family, house and art. A stunning 90 min experience. Easily the best preserved 18th century house in London open to the public.
J. K.
A hidden gem amongst London's historic houses. A guided tour by well-informed guides through the history of the Spencer family and their stunning London home. History brought to life.

A pre-booked tour was made interesting and informative by our guide Olivia. The state rooms have been beautifully restored. No photos except in the Great Room (which is well worth a few pictures!).

Extremely unique residence which survived WWII bombing mostly intact, miraculously because the two buildings on either side were destroyed. A fascinating history is told by the guide during the hour long tour of the primary rooms, which have been fully restored. Much of the fittings, doors and windows were removed to save them from being damaged in the war and had to be replaced and that was done with great care for authenticity. This is a rare house to survive in central London and well worth the visit. Photos are not allowed in most rooms.

Stunning venue for a lovely evening. Staff are very polite and attentive. Would highly recommend

18th Century house restored in 20th century by Rothschilds so most of it is reproduction but it looks good. Excellent tour.

Only available on a Sunday. Superb guide introduced the Spencer family and how the house overlooking Green Park was rescued by Lord Rothschild in 1982 with a restoration of the highest standard. The ceiling in the painted room is the highlight but then so are the door knobs! Don't miss this sublime building if you are in London...but be grateful the Luftwaffe did between 1939 and 1945.

Interesting property. Excellent tour guide. Open to public only on Sundays.

Beautiful house inside and outside. Very close to the park near green park station. Replica decor and furnishings of the original Spencer House before the war. Well worth the visit.

Had an opportunity to get invited to dinner organized by his excellency Lord Baron Rothschild.
Outstanding place with rich history and wonderful paintings on wall

Wonderful building and a great tour. The rooms, art work and furniture are well worth a visit.
C. L.
A beautiful house that has managed to bring back or re-create most of how it was. Would just liked to have seen some more of the background places like the kitchen
J. M.
Went for a private party. Beautiful building. Only problem was it was very chilly

Beautiful House and a very well informed and enjoyable tour.
Thank you Roz.

The only bad thing is the no photo policy during the tour. So only got to take photos of the bathroom prior to touring the house.

Really beautiful mansion from the 1700's. Yiu will need to book tickets in advance

Beautiful house owned by Spencer Family - Princess Diana's Family
Lots of history and relaxing day

Amazing tour by a brilliant Blue badge guide. A stunningly looked after and restored house with lots of history. Well worth a visit or even hire a room for a special occasion - you'll be hard pushed to find a more spectacular setting.

Had an excellent Sunday tour of the house with a very knowledgeable and comprehensive guide. Atmospheric artwork and period furnishings restored to their original condition. A couple of times a year the tours also include the garden with its exotic species. A hidden gem in Central London.

Very lovely house, amazing decor & history. The guide was excellent! Usually I tune out with these tours, I can't concentrate on dates etc, but the guide made it interesting, relevant & funny. A great place to visit!

Beautiful interiors. Have never seen a olde time house this grand and beautifully in keeping with how it would of looked. Makes some heritage trust houses look a bit naff. Great history and knowledgeable guides. A ask about the hydra statue satire. That was really interesting

This is a fascinating visit. Unique in that it is a beautiful neoclassical building - original ancestral home of Spencer family (princess Diana and Georgiana were family members), with gorgeously decorated rooms and many pieces of original furniture to see. I had an excellent guide who allowed lots of questions too. Thoroughly recommend! And afterwards you can wander down to the Mall and see St James Palace and Buckingham Palace. Only open on Sundays. Lovely tea shops to visit after in Piccadilly.

A hidden gem in London. Fascinating history, and so beautifully restored. Our guide (who’s name I’m very sorry I cannot remember) was wonderful, full of little secrets and pointing out things in the rooms that we would have missed otherwise. I could have stayed there much longer. Highly recommended.
R. S.
Gorgeous venue and very nice food.

We have just been on a group visit to Spencer House and it is a beautiful house which has been sympathetically and wonderfully restored. it is a gem overlooking Green Park, full of treasures dating from the 15c. Our guide, Maurizio, was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about everything. This place is worth a second visit as there is so much to see. There is no cafe, but then it's only open two days a week, and there is a multitude of cafes in the direct vicinity. The website and leaflet tells you this, so you know before you visit.
S. L.
It is rare to find a house like this that is open to the public in central London. It is indeed stunning albeit small in size compared to others. Guided tour is highly recommended!
W. W. K.
It's open to the public every Sunday for a guided tour. £12 per person and lasts around an hour. The guide was very friendly and it was an informative tour. Pretty much all of the items are not original, but either copies or furniture from that period though.

Magnificent house, hidden gem in London

A lovely place full of history with incredible spaces to enjoy art, its worth it to visit, staff is very kind and helpful to answer any questions its really fascinating. Simply breathtaking. Love it :)

Fascinating 18th century townhouse owned by the family of Diana Princess of Wales. It had fallen into disrepair but was restored by the Rothschilds. Several rooms are open to public tours on Sundays only. The balance of the estate is a functioning office building. Tours are led by a docent who explains the history and restoration process. Was quite the surprise. High recommendations

A nice place to tour on a Sunday. Spencer House is probably not in my top-tier of London historical places for first-time visitors, but on my 4th trip to London, we decided it was time to visit. It's a a lovely place that gives you the essence of how the aristocracy lived in days gone by. If you've got the time on a Sunday, stop in and take the tour.

Love this place! Also love it for private events! It’s fascinating how organized and highly professional everyone is, especially Chris!! He is a rockstar and the most professional, detailed oriented and meticulous event manager I have ever worked with!
L. B.
I visited as part of Open House London and was pleased I did. The rooms were interesting and filled with typical items and a few surprises in the decor.
C. S.
It may only be open to the public on a Sunday but if you are in the Green Park area then it is worth going on one of the tours to find out about one of London's hidden 18th century palaces.
S. D.
Actually, This place deserves 6 STARS!!!! I was absolutely amazed by how i was treated, I felt like I was at home. The food was amazing. I would recommend! 10/10 delicious. That Danan guy can eat a pile of dirt, which, you could not find at this restaurant.

Spencer House at 27 St James's Place is a mansion in St James's, London, England, and is held from the owner (Earl Spencer) by Lord Rothschild on a long lease.
The house was commissioned by John, 1st Earl Spencer, in 1756, the Earl requiring a large townhouse to cement his position and status. The architect he chose was John Vardy who had studied under William Kent. Vardy is responsible for the facades of the mansion that we see today. The house is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
