Reviews of Alkrington Woods Nature Reserve
M. S.
I've been visiting this place for many years and it's always beautiful no matter the season. You can walk, run, or walk your dog here. In Spring you can sometimes find baby birds. During Summer you can often see huge dragon flies buzzing around. In Winter the frost and ice is just amazing to see in the morning. It's well maintained so usually no litter on the ground.
W.
Nice little park there is a few lakes its not a massive place but a good place for dog walkers or a quiet walk.
If like me you like the wildlife this is a good place for herons,Coots,Ducks,Swans. The parking is free but If I remember they lock the gate at 4pm so be sure to check that if you use the carpark.
P. D.
I enjoy a walk here every day with my dog Ozzy.
S. H.
Great walks to be had around here, some nice little lakes/ponds and some really big ancient trees. There can be a bit of antisocial behaviour though. Its quiet in the mornings though and a great place to watch a sunrise.
R. K.
Lovely little walk, nice big fishing pond for members only but you can walk around the woods with some nice little sights, parking is free, lovely if you have a dog.
C. A.
Lovely place to explore with paths in many directions. It's often so peaceful and quiet.
L. S.
Stunning scenery, and so peaceful
D. L.
Came here this morning what a surprise very quiet nice scenery little stream going through very enjoyable walk for us and our 2 dogs well worth a visit easy enough to for parking or local buses
G. S.
Great place to go for a walk and adventure with the kids. There is a dinosaur trail which was fun trying to find them. Take a picnic as you can be there for awhile.
A. C.
nice place to walk the dog or walk with the kids
B. G.
It was a lovely walk just a bit wet & muddy (though at this time of year you cant expect anything else) Will definately be going again
C. C.
Great place for walking. So nice to have this wonderful green space in an area that has lots of major roads and heavy traffuc. I walk there most days.
J. D.
Great place for walking, nature trails. Dog walking. Family dinosaur hunt. Taking wildlife pictures ❤️🐾🐕🐿️🦇🦆
D. B.
Peaceful and quiet good fishing love it
M. C.
Beech plantation, birch/oak native woodland, some exotic hard and softwood tree species, nice Riverside walks, former mill ponds, wildlife ponds, historical buildings and oddities - lots going on!
B.
What a walk. And 4 beautiful fishing lakes.
A. R.
I love Alkrington Woods, it’s my go to chill space....it cost nothing, makes my dog happy , is great for bird watching, is very photogenic & just keeps on giving, every season.
W. B.
Needs cleaning up a bit e.g rubbish, bottle and bags at the wiers on the rivers and streams But everything else is good. Nice walk on a nice day or even in the snow
D. R.
Fabulous place for a walk. Clean water for a dip in the reservoir...
M. M.
Lots of ponds and flat walking areas. Friendly fishermen.
O. P.
We moved to the area a year ago and have since discovered the nature reserve. What a great place to spend the afternoon with the pooch. Everyone that we meet is so friendly. Definitely recommended.
I. E.
A lovely peaceful and nature walk. Lots of water and pathways,
G. M.
Love this place. Great for walking the dog and unwinding
D. B.
Lovely place for kids to run around in and the dinosaur hunt was fun
O. P.
Absolutely fantastic. Loved every moment, we had no idea all this was literally around the corner from where we live. Made some precious memories today, we'll definitely be making a daily visit.
P. S.
Nice reserve, very big with lots of nature around you but very damp so don't bring in your expensive shoes if you wanna meet explore.
E. S.
Beautiful place for a walk. Great trees, lakes, meadow and river.
m. c.
It's lovely. All the wildlife you can see. And the grounds are beautifully kept. Some really lovely walking there as long as you can find your way back! Would love one or two more benches to rest on
R. C.
My favourite local place to walk
N. D.
Lovely walk with the children spotting all the elf doors 😊
Z. R.

D. W.

D. H.
Excellent place to watch the wild birds,or just walking around and contemplating.
M. M.
Nice place for a walk
B. M.
Part of my daily schedule, with several clearly marked walks to follow.
There are several fishing lodges with scenic views and plenty of bird life, especially in the breeding season.
The Dinosaur Hunt has been a huge success during the Summer holidays for parents and children alike.
S. W.
I visited yesterday for the first time and I was presently surprised how big the nature reserve is. Plenty to see, like lots of wildlife, rivers, ponds, lakes and streams. Someone on here did mention about the lack of bins which I agree with and sadly there are some folk out there who think that just because there are not enough bins, they can throw there rubbish on the ground. Disgraceful behaviour. Anyway apart from the rubbish and mentality of some folk, the nature reserve is definitely a place I would recommend to visit but please take your rubbish home with you. Thank you.
M. A.
Really nice to walk around with the dogs. .
A.
One of the best hidden nature reserves in the north west.
Always quiet and empty, clean and calm. Great meadow and hill to sit in and look out over woodland and up towards the hills of Ramsbottom.
The river Irk runs along size this reserve up to the fishing lodges at Rhodes.
If you want a nice walk with nothing too intense or over crowded would always recommend these woods
E. S.
A picture tell a story a beautiful jungle on your door step different walks for many sorts of walkers
P. G.
First time visit today with family including granddaughter (3) who loved the woodlands and the waterfowl. Only criticism is that some paths ( particularly south bank of Perch Pond) were inaccessible with a wheel chair because of exposed roots and brick ends. Would be useful if there were signs placed to Mark unsuitable paths before you started along them.
A. W.
Beautiful place. Great for walk with your dg and all your family.
R. C.
Lived near here all my life and always enjoyed walking in these woods however a lot of walker's just don't respect the place and litter and dog dirt is an unsightly problem.
M. C.
There are so many different walks around the area. Fishing ponds, lakes, Riverside and woodland, both me and my dog love the variety. Plus plenty of parking if you don't want to walk to the woods.
L. M.
A lovely local varied walk with fishing lodges, a great hill for sledging on in the winter, woodland and a river. great place for birdwatching also, carpark until 4pm not many bins or bridges across said river though!
E. W.
This is a gorgeous reserve spanning miles. One path begins across heaton park, at the corner of Sainsbury's. You can join the path that leads from here to middleton at any of the roads along the way, off Middldton Road.
When you come into the reserve there are a number of ponds/lakes, all with places around them to sit.
It's a peaceful, calm place. I've barely explored the paths yet... looking forward to seeing more of it...
M. M.
We've been there for a first time today. I've never expected this place to be so interesting. Perfect one to those want to be close to the nature. Lots of paths to explore.
B. M.
Great local nature reserve. It's full of all kinds of Flora, Fauna and Fungi. It's looked after by the ranger really well, but due to its close proximity to the town centre, it's frequented at times by alcoholics and other questionable characters.
I. W.
I wish there was a map, other than that it was nice to walk around.
Y. J.
Despite the expected muddy bits at this time of year, it’s always a pleasure to walk here. There are so many different paths to explore as well as the lodges. Saw frog spawn today. Join our health walks to see for yourselves. Every Friday at 12.00 from the Lighthouse Project in Middleton Shopping Centre
R. D. D.
The paths here are peaceful and tranquil. Walking along by the water's edge affords one the opportunity to think and to relax.
M. F.
Nice wood with bodies of water and a river. Don't really bother too much with the right hand side (if looking at a map). The factory behind it marr's the view. It's also a shame about the busy roads nearby as it makes it impossible not to hear the traffic when walking through 90% of the reserve.
If you look hard enough however you can find a track the takes you to Heaton park and extending your walk.
N. E.
Nice place for a walk.
s. w.
Great place with a camera and a bit of patience.
Great to explore walk the dog or just have a peaceful walk.
Plenty of wildlife if that's what your into.
Y. M. J.
Pleasant walking area with lots of interesting paths to explore. On our visit today we saw a young deer and a heron. Our walk started from Sainsbury's heading to Middleton and back.
C. C.
It's such a beautiful place to walk it's just a shame when you see litter/ rubbish that's been dumped here. (Trolley, bike, tyre etc)
G. P.
Lovely walk just a pity, not all dog owners pick up after there dogs. I have puppy it doest cost much for poo backs.
S. H.
Great place to walk your dog's, lots area's for them to swim. Great place to go with family and friends or by yourself for peace and quiet and feed some ducks.
J. D. V.
Lovely walks but not enough bins. Not great in that respect for dog walkers
c. s.

D. R.
Lovely place for a walk with the children and dog
S. M.
A great place to take kids huge woods can lost for hours, plus there's lakes as well, plenty of well trodden foot paths
J. C.
Purely for walking,be prepared to get lost if you're unfamiliar especially if you go off the main path however, stunning woodland walks.

Nice peaceful walk along the river, I never knew this place was here until now. Quite a lot of rubbish around though, I assume from the less desirable characters that were fishing there. It also has a really strong small of dirty laundrette water, not sure what caused that. It is a nice walk but I won't be rushing back.
