Anyone experienced China Town Express?
📍China Town Express @ Stowell St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4XQ
We were informed by friends that the claypot dishes here are most delicious.
We ordered Vegetarian Fried Rice and Claypot Fish with tofu.
We had no idea that the claypot fish would be served with pork, so we pushed the pork aside (Michelle and I don't eat pork).
That aside, it was a pleasant meal, a simple lunch with lovely Fried Rice. I particularly enjoy Fried Rice that's hot from the wok.
I'd have to experience more of their claypot dishes to give a full review, in time 😄

This is a sad Chinatown. It's literally one street and some of the shops here are even Chinese. Plenty of closed shops here, but there's some decent restaurants here and also a proper Chinese supermarket, which does have an excellent range of Chinese groceries.
Fine if you've never seen a Chinatown before, but otherwise don't bother. It is a good place to get Asian food though, if that's what you're after.

Excellent Food Great Choice Nice Friendly Staff 100%Recommended 💪
P. S.
Decently sized Chinatown. Had a nice meal but didn't really get much else from it. The arch that marks the entrance is a nice youch.
V. A. V.
Super friendly people, nice informal place, awesome food. A bit pricey but its a fast food that really worth the visit. Duck is something! 😍
P. I.
Ordered a chicken fried rice via just eat while on holiday and it was the best chicken fried rice I had in twenty years. Was put in a big tube plenty of rice but not filled to the top.
Only reason only giving four stars is because I only ordered one item but it was good.
K. S.
This was just like eating in a local restaurant in HK
G. C.
Great food excellent prices, friendly staff, and I've learned to use the chopsticks,(it helps me to slow down while I'm eating).

From my past couple of visits, Chinatown Express keeps on being an unassuming, no-frills place to have a good chinese. A great 8£ lunch deal, and a menu that both has the more "westernised" Chinese food and the more authentic dishes according to chinese friends (it's a very extensive menu). The duck is quite good apparently, and the portions sizes are perfect really (i.e enormous).
Pictures are for the chicken with mushrooms, and the salt and pepper beef dishes (and of the great view from the window seats).
No alcohol is served however as they do not have a license, which is understandable considering the size of the place, but just as reference.
N. L.
Cheap and cheerful diner. 7pm ran out of roast meat.
M. H.
Major tourist attraction in Newcastle. The archway is one of the biggest in the UK specifically built by Chinese craftsmen from China. Chinatown, or mainly Stowell Street in reality, is mostly made up of restaurants which reside along its length. From quick eats like Chinatown express, Landmark westernised higher-end, Dojo Japanese, King Neptune (Cantonese), Sky (Cantonese), to seafood hot-pot fondue places, Palace Garden (Cantonese), and Wing Hong supermarket, to Mananza Korean, two Japanese teppanyaki restaurants and Meet & Treat pan Asian cafe eatery. There is quite the choice! There is also the Jasmine and Bread Point Chinese bakeries not too far away in low friar street, which is essential! Also slightly further away is Hi-You Chinese supermarket, and Laus 202 buffet restaurant which is fantastic.

Best Chinese takeaway/sit in restaurant in Newcastle
T. R.
Fantastic food, fantastic people. Highly reccomended for both dining in and takeaway. Have had many different meals on the menu over the years and always extremely happy. A must if you are in China Town Newcastle. You won't be disappointed!!
t. 3.
A sort of traditional Chinatown with enough restaurants and other establishments to make it a reliable place to visit if/when you crave a bit of Chinatown-ing. However, there are more modern establishments nearby away from Stowell St that are a better experience for shopping, dining, etc.
Y. “. S.
Was here for Chinese new year celebrations!
What a great show and atmosphere!
Highly recommended!
👍 👍 👍
F.
Food is nice and especially the roasted pork
J. C.
Express by name, express by nature. Expect to have your food delivered to your table in less than 5 minutes at this speedy, yet excellent quality chinese café. Personal favourites are the special dry fried instant noodles, Black pepper pork chop udon, and the Dry fried beef ho fun. Covered in the home made, smoky, spicy chilli oil of course.
S. N.
I've ate at Chinatown Express many times over the years, they do the tastiest chicken fried rice I've ever had, definitely my favourite. The menu is quite pricey compared to other places, however the portion sizes are quite large and you get what you pay for in terms of taste and quality. 5* definitely recommend.
A. B.
Beautiful meal. Would recommend. Great service.
S. P.
Oh I love the chicken fried rice from this place ..Must taste.
a. g.
Good choice of eating, king Neptune is excellent food and service
K. F.
Have been here for years on and off as previously living down south, but recently moved up north, This time taking my little one to try place still and it holds up!
Has traditional Chinese food available, highly recommend the 3 meat roast with rice and Hong Kong milk tea. Perfection! 👌👍
Z. P.
Had chicken fried rice, chips and curry sauce proper nice. Definitely going again.
P. B.
Walked through will have to have a meal again along here smells were amazing 👏
D. R.
Beautiful food, fast service and reasonably priced. We will definitly be back again. The place has more of a cafe than a restaurant feel but dont let this put you off.
S. P.
Been going here for years and the food is lush. Lovely staff and great service. Just wish they had a Facebook page or a site with a up-to-date menu.
Thank you for the wonderful food x
A. b.
It's a little past its hay day of the heady heights of the Eighties and nineties. A lot of the restaurants have either closed or changed hands. The only real attraction is the 'new' Chinese gate at the entrance to Stowell Street. It's okay for a walk around. Look at the old town wall which is to the north and the west of the main Street. There is plenty of shopping and food to the south, with in walking distance.
N. A. R. R.
Fantastic food, great staff was quick, and in one way reminded me allot of when I was in Hong Kong, plus price is good, just rem to take cash they don't use cards. 10/10
S. C.
The food was good. They have a 2 course lunch menu for £8. An affordable restaurant with fast service
H. Q.
Amazing place for Chinese students who study abroad to memorize their lives in China
L. a. v.
Amazing and filling satisfying food. Very quick and efficient service. Great prices

A little china. Nice place to visit in the Chinese new year
C. L.
Best Chinese food in Newcastle the staff are polite. Delivery was quicker than expected the taste is unreal Compliments to the chef 👌
E. R.
Very tasty and quick. Great service. Just do not accept card so we had to count our coins haha. But pretty good overall.
D. A.
Great Chinese food you can tell it's good quality as it's frequented by the local Chinese community
e. b.
Good food and quite cheap especially with the meal deal
B. R.
Good experience, Good food, quick service.
S. M.
Good food choices and place , they're kind and quick in servings
T. M.
A great range of Chinese restaurants on the outskirts of the city centre.
J. B.
You can buy Chinese food here
A. C.
Lots of Chinese restaurants and supermarkets, a couple of decent pubs in the area too
T. P. R.
Been eating here for the last five nights don't be put off by the decor this place serves the best Chinese food in Newcastle highly recommended
J. H.
Brilliant.. proper Chinese food .. good value .. lovely flavours .. speedy service
.. good reason to go to Newcastle!
s. l.
Always gorgeous food. Quick and reasonable prices 😊😊
K. A.
Really friendly customer service. The food tastes fair enough, not spicy. Definitely not the best Chinese restaurant but the customer service is so good that it makes you wanna buy more.
翻.
Newcastle's Chinatown has plenty of restaurant choices (including a couple of hot-pots) and a few different supermarkets (which each sell things that are sometimes hard to find in other ones). There's also a community centre.
Attending the Chinese New Year here was fun with a lovely parade. Dancers, costumes, drummers, dragon performers! I look forward to coming again next year.
Really happy when I found a shop that sells black sesame seeds! Along with many different types of noodles, flavourings and general odd bits.
D. F.
Lovely food, fast service and a good price
M.
Fabulous chinese food. Very clean, lovely, friendly and helpful staff
J. T.
A small selection of restaurants and shops, small but lovable.
m. B.
You want authentic Chinese food go where the Chinese people go. You will be surrounded by local Chinese. Great food looks like a transport cafe good service. Frequent repeat visitor and will be there next Saturday
B. P.
Nice little chinatown with a good selection of restauraunts.
H. B.
Yummy food, tender meat dishes. Staff were so patient and helpful. Will be back next week to try more delicious food!
K. B.
Really good food at a good price (especially when you go at happy hour).
L. D.
Deceiving looks for those who think good food is found in places with tablecloths and thick napkins.
I don't understand the Chinese specials and don't know what to order but the food the (mainly Chinese) customers are eating always looks more interesting than the westernized menu. Having said that the food and service is great and a two course lunch costs less than a one course take-away from most other places.
Highly recommended from someone who has eaten in London and many other places. (Resident of Newcastle for 60 years.
J. O.
Good value authentic Chinese food. And fast!
I. 2.
I eat here at least once a week ! Beautiful food very friendly people!
A. P.
Really good food here, I would highly recommend the roast duck dishes.
A. J.
Awesome Chinese cafe. Basic canteen style seating, 6 quid lunch. This place has two menus, ask for the Chinese one if you want some more authentic choices
A. N.
Big meals, affordable, extremely fast, polite service. They have a pretty decent menu. Even side dishes are big.
The place doesn't look high class, but for the locals. It gives a bit of the vibe you get if you eat at a local place in Asia. For me, that adds to the charm: a no-nonsense eatery.
I. R.
Everything was great and friendly people
C. H.
Usually just order congee with deep fried dough and roast duck! These are really nice
N. F.
Personal favourite of the restaurants in China Town as the food always tastes fresh
J. G.
An excellent Chinatown, one to be proud of in Newcastle, the locals are super friendly. Each restaurant had it's own quirks, and the Chinese new year is celebrated by what feels like the whole city. Deffinetly worth a visit.
M. S.
Great place for cheap and cheerful Chinese food. The interior is very basic and staff not that assertive but it's a good option for takeaway or if you want a quick meal. Don't go here expecting high quality food and probably not the sort of place to go on a date!
T. H.
Good quality buffet food. Because it's slightly off the main road in China town, you get better value for money.
A. Y.
A great place to get quick, good value genuine Chinese food!!
P. S.
Fast service and nice food at the end of a night out.
P. H.
I like Chinatown, i used to frequent the buffet restaurants here but i don't know whats there now, its pretty hard to find any info on Google either.
The gate car park is here and its just on the edge of Newcastle City centre.
Lovely Chinese new year celebrations are held here each year, thats definitely worth a visit.
Asian supermarket is just outside chinatown for authentic foods and ingredients.
The entrance to China town is and impressive ornate arch with Chinese dragon statues either side.
Wierdly china town is home to Tyneside Irish Centre just beyond the arch
A. S.
Food is really nice, and really cheap
F. R.
Average food. Not so friendly service
C. H.
Parked nearby in Chinatown wandered through what caught our eye was u could watch the chef's at work through a big shop window into the kitchen great fun food was stunning bargain
P. B.
Freshly cooked, tasty, piping hot food. It is great value and the staff are lovely - polite and friendly.
R. T.
Chinatown is a little haven of delicious food and hidden gems within Newcastle upon Tyne. If you can't choose which of the many tastu restaurants you want to visit, why not take a tour of the exotic garden? Once full, remember the good time by having your photo taken at the massive Chinese arch.
R. L.
Fantastic range of Asian restaurants including a number of Japanese restaurants that have appeared in the last few years. Catering for a good range of budgets and the atmosphere is good too.
H. Q. L.
Not bad, cheap express deal, lots of choices, quick service.
S. B.
The food and service is great a real gem😂
D. A.
Fast food and some vegan options.
Tofu in Schwain is good. Very reasonable price.
Lovely food. Must try
J. J. M.
Lovely food. Never sat down for a meal but favourite takeaway.
A. B.
A great place for restaurants and culture. The street is decorated with lanterns, lights and statues. When chinese new year comes around it has a festival too.
V. T.
Great restaurants and shops
S. T.
Excellent food, ideal for a lunchtime treat.
A. N.
Chinatown, all china fit into one is everywhere. The crowded streets filled with the smell of dumplings and fresh rice. Chinatown is a great tourist attraction and many should go there.
k. k.
Oh wonderful arch gate to welcome.. This is a proper china town as in you get actual Chinese people selling stuff, restaurants and all sorts of Chinese items.
C. L. W.
Rice has been better but usually this is a lovely place to go, the environment could be warmer but the food is fast and usually very tasty. Just let down on the rice today, it wasn't as sticky as usual which is how I like it!
Z. J.
Cheap but extraordinary. It is not a high-class restaurant but definitely an authentic day-to-day Chinese restaurant.
J. C.
Great places to eat. I'd recommend reviewing each restaurant in turn. Some very good and others not so.
M. C.
Authentic SE Asian and Chinese cuisine. This is where the local chinese eat. Not somewhere to sit and chat the night away but where good food is.
M. S. H.
In agreement with what I'd heard about this place being one of the best Chinese eateries in town, as long as you don't mind the basic furnishings and definitely if you want to eat quick! I had fried fish with aubergine, which was a bit of a risk for me, but loved it. The fish was crispy and tasty, but not too overpowering... was a nice change from my usual black bean. Will definitely be back!
C. M.
Lunchtime specials great. Lovely staff.
Z. K.
Lovely Chinese takeaway, even at late hours.
K. W.
Friendly staff. Excelent food.
G. H.

A. G.
Great places to eat great food
A. M.
Food very good if a little expensive. Catch it during times of special lunch or early evening menus for better value.
C. G.
The food is lovely looking and gorgeous. All of the restaurants top of the range and and the place has a historical background
R. H.
Short Street but good places to visit. China town express is brilliant for food and wing Hong is a decent time supermarket at the other end.
J. F.
My favourite restaurant in Chinatown is the King Neptune. 3 course lunchtime menu £10.90 very good value
P. C.
Fab place
M. E.
You can't go wrong with China town. Try the sky restaurant for nice views, or china town express for fast cheap and authentic do ones dishes.
P. W.

G. R.

D. H.
Best Chinese in China town!
D. H.
Delicious food and great service
M. C.
Still the best Chinese 'quick' (as opposed to fast) food in Newcastle. Not a restaurant but food is authentic (HINT: it's always full of Chinese people!). Only accepts cash and parking can be a nightmare. After 6:30pm, loading bays are free parking spaces, perfect for a quick dinner. In my humble opinion, they make the best Beef Hor Fun (beef flat noodles) in the North East!
A. G.
Food was ok bit greasy but still nice
S. L.
Nice place. Recommend coming down Chinese New Year for lion dance and fireworks
r. j.
It's just like we went to China. Many Chinese shops and Chinese restaurants throughout the street.

Small China Town with a great selection of Chinese restaurants.
Y. C.
Amazing place for food!! Feeling at home:)
M. C.
Trust me... I grew up in HK so I know my Chinese food... this is the best in Newcastle. It's not a restaurant but a Hong Kong style Chinese cafe for FAST food. Gone a bit pricey recently but hey, its the center of town. If you want chips with gravy, dont go here... I mean who goes to a Chinese for chips!? F'ing lame! Or if you want pretendy so-called Chinese food like prawn crackers with your chicken sweetcorn soup, go to "Lau's Buffet King" along the road, with their 1 score from food hygiene. But If you want authentic mouth watering Chinese scran, this place is the mutts nuts!
J. K.
