Reviews of Housesteads Roman Fort - Vercovicium - English Heritage Site
N. S.
Great place to visit. Fantastic Roman Fort with a museum of all the artefacts found on site. Lots of information boards describing each area and what it was used for. The staff are all so friendly and knowledgeable. When we visited there was an art exhibition on site which was fabulous. Free for English Heritage and National Trust members although you still have to pay for parking, which cost us £4. There's a cafe on site with cakes, pastries and hot and cold drinks. The site is also dog friendly. It's worth putting on some good waterproof shoes with decent grips.
C. B.
The site was fabulous and the museum was informative and well laid out, if small. We came this time to see the artwork which was, well, just a bit mad, but great to get and impression of the height of the fort in its heyday. All staff welcoming and chatty but not pushy. Dog friendly!
S. N.
Great and accessible place along Hadrian’s Wall to go (by car and public transport at certain times of year). The visitor centre is a little small so would advise going at a less busy time but when the weather is fine as it is a c.10 minute walk from the car park and bus stop.
There are a few mile castles, etc. nearby so great place to base yourself if you want to see several landmarks along a relatively short distance.
T. F.
You cannot fail to be amazed at the ingenuity of the Romans in building this hillside Fort.
Although busy you can find a quiet space to contemplate how it must have felt to have been part of this community.
Information boards and the small museum were great in explaining and illustrating the various areas of the fort
M. R.
A nice walk up from the car park to the visitor centre and museum passed all the sheep. The museum was very informative and the Roman Fort itself was good but unfortunately for us it was raining so the views weren't great and rushed around a bit. There are lovely walks you can do along Hadrian's wall from here too. Toilets are situated by the car park and cafe, so don't forget to go before you walk up
r.
Stunning scenery and a must for a history buff. Follow a guided tour for half an hour, it's well worth it. The knowledge of the guide is first class.
S. H.
Great Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall. Enough ruins survive to be able to give a vivid idea as to what a Roman fort would have been like. Very helpful staff available to answer any questions. Handy museum gift shop next to this which is a good source of information.
S. F.
Fabulous place for a day out.
This is the last place you can walk on Hadrians Wall (according to the chap on the gate)..Free to English Heritage and National Trust members. Carpark is payable though and when we went (August '22) you pay when you leave.
The fort is an amazing example and one of the best preserved. You are walking in the footsteps of those Romans who built it. Such a fascinating insight into the day to day life and changes to the fort over the few hundred years it existed.
If you are there it is worth the trip to see it, there are handy info boards for children as well.
J. S.
A piece of history with lots of opportunities to learn from the museum and multiple information boards. Well maintained by English Heritage and National Trust.
There is a big carpark which you pay when you leave. 2022 prices are £4 for 3 hours which is enough time to see everything.
There is a cafe next to the car park before the 0.5 mile walk up to the Fort.
M. A.
Beautiful location and a good walk to a historically well preserved ruin. Carpark near a cafe and toilet, carpark costs £3 for 4 hours. Toilets near cafe. There is a museum and ticket booth near the actual ruin, about a 15 minute walk from car park. Total walk to ruin is 20 minutes, I spent 80 minutes walking to and around the ruin. I went when a bright art piece was in place...it was interesting and gave a neat perspective.
V. H.
Lots of roman Fort remains. Little bit of a hike from the carpark if you don't like walking. Great views. Currently has a very colorful art installation of part of the Fort.
M. C.
A must-see if you have any interest in history or the Romans. The staff is very knowledgeable and wonderfully friendly, and it's a real treat to be able to wander around a 2000 year-old fort.

Having not visited Housesteads since I was at school, I was keen to take my partner who loves Roman history and has moved to the north east. We recently joined the National Trust admission was included. There is a car park with ample parking and you can usually pay cash or card however today the card reader was not working. You pay on exiting and I had to go onto their website and pay £4 for a three hour park. At the main entrance there are toilets, a little cafe and picnic area. They kindly provided drinking water for dogs here.
The walk up to the site itself is very steep and is made of loose stones so be careful. It’s a 1/2 mile walk and then you pay admission at the museum and then show your ticket at the site entrance.
The site itself is epic and the views are to die for. We went in July on a cloudy overcast and drizzly day which was actually perfect. There is no shelter from either hot sun or inclement weather once you’re up there. If you want photos of the ruins without people on them, try to go on a weekday out of school holidays. I managed to get some good ones when it drizzled with rain and people dispersed a bit. The ruins are brilliant to see and there are little signs at each part to describe them.
Not at all impressed with the ‘art instillation’ which thankfully is only temporary and (in my humble opinion) is a blot of an otherwise beautiful landscape. I heard one super posh lady say that it was a ‘literal Instagrammable icon’. needless to say she wore dungarees, had blue hair and a rainbow badge on her fleece!!!! I 100% disagree and am pleased it’s not a permanent feature. You have this beautiful area of outstanding beauty, blemished with a scaffolding multicoloured structure slap bang in the middle of it.
If you are feeling fit you can walk for 2 miles to Sycamore Gap and several people seem to be enjoying that. I will definitely return later in the year to do this.
Observations
• staff super friendly and helpful.
• a photocopy or a map for a small fee would be useful.
• signs asking people to keep left on the walk up to the site would be handy. People walking 5 abreast which meant others having to veer into the grass and walking in sheep poop!
• the postcode given on national trust website tells you you’ve gone past the entrance and to turn around - but if you keep going, you’ll get there.
• dogs on leads welcome everywhere but the museum.
M. J.
Good Roman fort, just off the Military Road in Northumberland. Free with English Heritage membership but you will need to pay £4 for parking. There is a museum and cafe on site. I wouldn't recommend it to people with limited mobility, as they wouldn't get much value from the site
S. S.
Stopped here on the journey home and was fascinating to see parts of the Fort and wall. However I've deducted a star for the monstrosity that is currently in place. I understand why it's been done but it doesn't fit in with surroundings at all.

Loved Housteads Roman Fort.
This amazingly preserved Archaeological site has a small museum and a cafe on site and a good number of interpretation/explanation panels.
As this is run by two separate entities (National Trust and English Heritage) they have a divided approach to the site. National Trust owns the Cafe, Shop & Toilets at the entrance to the site (at the bottom of the hill) and after a walk along the path (uphill) and just a short walk from the entrance to the site itself there is a small English Heritage Museum which is where you purchase your entry (unless you are a member of National Trust or English Heritage then entry is free).
The museum has a collection of great finds from the site and detailed information about the Roman history of the area. You can also buy a few things like soft drinks, ice lollies/ice creams, souvenirs and necessities for walking (I ended up purchasing a hat from here on a particularly sunny day).
Halsteads the roman ruins are a short distance from Hadrians wall and a shorter walk from the museum. The back of the ruins are attached to the wall (See the north entrance). And you even get to see how at the lowest point of the ruins they placed the toilets so all water would have drained off into there to flush out the nasties. A large part of this toilet complex still exists and is definitely worth a look!
We found that Halsteads was a great place to start a walk along a bit of Hadrians wall. We could get a bus from Haltwhistle that dropped us off at Halsteads. We walked from Halsteads to The Sill and then picked the bus back up from there to return us to Haltwhistle (we stopped at the pub Twice Brewed which is worth a stop before getting our second bus!). The path along Hadrians Wall is not an easy walk and I needed to change my path from directly next to the wall to the bottom of the hill path by the time we arrived at Sycamore Gap. So be prepared for a very undulating landscape.
Halsteads is worth a look, is a great starting point, has tasty ice creams, nice souvenirs for sale up the hill and you can get a good cup of tea at the bottom of the hill! It is easily accessed by public transport and had a decent sized car park if you need it. All in all a nice afternoon out.
R. C.
Lovely little history lesson in the visitor center and info boards walking in the ruins.
You can walk along the wall for a while in both directions, something I'll be doing more of when the days get longer.
r. k.
40 years ago I visited Housesteads with my father. In turn I took my son. Some of the best ruins, we headed on to Sycamore gap and back. Wonderful day.
T. B.
Very interesting visit. Museum very informative. Fort ruins are well sign posted and Hadrian's Wall is very visible. Be prepared for a long uphill walk.
R. V. d. V.
Had a brilliant time here and our friends loved it too. The site is really impressive, especially the views out over the countryside. We visited on a very misty new year's eve and there weren't many other visitors so it was very quiet and atmospheric. There's a surprisingly good 8 minute video at the small English Heritage visitor's centre and a small collection of well-chosen interesting artefacts. Also loved how well-preserved the foricae (public loos) are!
B. B.
Parking is pay on leaving by card only.
Nice stroll up to the Fort to see the art installation currently built there. Fantastic view from the top of it. A stroll through the wooden area at the top returning to the cafe for refreshments.
R. B.
Very interesting and informative. Lovely walks either way along the wall. Nice food at the cafe too.
J. E.
Would highly recommend a visit to Housesteads Fort . There is a steep walk up to the Fort but well worth it. There's a bit of Hadrians wall where you can walk on. Fantastic day out.
J. B.
So it's roman ruins, but fascinating history and we'll worth the visit.
We have English heretage membership so free entry. Otherwise prices circa £10 per adult with less for kids and consessions.
Added bonus (?) of the brightly coloured artwork that's a bit marmite. You either love or hate it. It's only there until November 2022. But worth a visit as it's pretty cool in its own right. The Roman Fort itself is fascinating and a huge part of history part of Hadrians wall.
Parking is paid circa £4.50 paid on leaving. Parking is not under control of English heritage so is paid regardless.
There's about a mile walk to the site consisting of steep hills both up and down. Hardcore surface also. You don't pay until the actual site so just parking if you can't manage the whole trip.
I loved it despite the hills. I have arthritis and stopped a lot in the way but worth the walk.
There's an additional 2 mile walk along the wall to take in more of the forts along the way but that was too much for me. You could still do these by car along the road there were stops and car parks along the road.
T.
Omg after reading all your previous reviews I should have at least taken a walking stick ……. The hill up to the fort is steep then the hill into Housesteads is steep, there’s nowhere to rest and sit unless you find a rock.
Anyhoo we got round it and it is very interesting……. The Romans new what they were doing.
After buying an ice cream we headed back to the car where we still had 1 hour 45 minutes to use as the charge is £4 for 3 hours straight off the bat.
Not sure I’d visit again or even recommend I’m afraid.
A. M.
Parked up at Housesteads which is ideal starting point to walk to steel rigg via some of the best views of Hadrian's Wall. 8 mile round trip and worth every step.
H. K.
The walk from the car park was a bit overwhelming but it was so worth it. Brilliantly laid out and lots of info boards. The film in the museum is definitely worth checking out too.
T. C.
Interesting ruins with people on hand to advise on the site.
They have erected an installation which allows you to get a feel for what it would be like to guard the wall from the dreaded barbarians.
S. D.
Amazing Roman historical site dating back to AD 124. Hiking near the fort should be relatively easy. Walking to the fort from the main entrance can be bit challenging for anyone with mobility issue. Wear proper shoes and layer up as you never know what the weather will be like. If you don’t have a car, getting here is bit tricky. There is a bus that runs between Hexam and Haltwhistle every hour and it stops at multiple stops for the Hadrian’s Wall hikers. Stops at the Housesteads Fort, The Sill, and Twice Brewed Inn every hour and Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum every other hour alternating between these two. The bus line is cleverly named as “AD122”! Vindolanda is a must visit site…an active excavation site. Go checkout the reviews.

Great place to visit, walking around Fort visiting museum, reading about life in roman times,a place you must visit if you like history,or you can just rest enjoy picnic and take in the spectacular views
K. S.
Loved it great day out very interesting, really fascinating what you can see, not personally keen on ghe art installation but great for perspective on size of the gate and the views. The wall to it is slightly strenuous if you have mobility issues, fairly uphill.
S. W.
Absolutely fascinating. There is a 10 minute walk from the car park, up a hill, that I didn't read on the website before visiting. This could be a problem for the less able bodied visitors.
K. D.
A very well preserved Roman fort with many ruins which portrait their life on Hadrians Wall. An interesting modern structure is presently set up to show the size of one of the largest buildings, but not sure about the colours used
C. R.
Great way to get a taste of the edge of the Roman empire. In reality not a lot to see honestly but you can feel history here and the landscape and the fort are really nice. The drive-in can be a bit tricky the roads are something you'll want to be ready for. The tour guides are excellent I would really recommend you know tour.
M. S.
Interesting place to visit and imagine life on the wall. Note that it's on top of a steep hill and a good walk up from the car park.
S. A.
Excellent historical day out. Lovely museum. Very informative. Must visit before going up to the fort. The fort is very well survived. Being Roman very well laid out. I would suggest purchasing a guide book before entering the fort . There is quite a distance from the car park to the fort but very well worth the walk
R. L.
Really interesting. Well managed and clear information. Steep climb but well worth the effort. Stunning views. Would definitely recommend!
I. C.
Loved the Fort and loved walking the wall even more. Had been waiting 30 years to do this and everything I thought it would be.
G.
Such an amazing place, so full of history. Touching stones that a soldier touched 2000 years ago gives me shivers. Imagining the battles and how civilised the Romans were. Cute little museum too.
M. T.
The walk from the car park can be steep for those less mobile so be aware.
Once there the site is fantastic, with some incredible views on clear days.
C. G.
Perfect way to end our day. Great views and very innovative. I wish we'd had more time.
D. L.
A really nice location well worth the visit. The veiws are amazing and really let you loose your self imagining how important the settlement would've been in the past.
N. M.
Amazing place to visit, so well preserved and gives a great idea to the scale of the place. Staff were lovely and helpful, signs were informative. Only downside was the tough 'climb' up, was not prepared for that! Well worth it though!
K. D.
Plenty of parking a bit of a climb and trek to get to the fort but the history and views make it worthwhile.
S. J.
Brilliant, pre booked guests signs up though so ensure you book in advance. Great reception, really informative museum and obviously the fort itself and going up to the wall mix that with the Northumberland Countryside it's amazing, even on a windy day with occasional hail thrown in
a. f.
Really interesting section of the wall. Good size parking, with pay as you leave ANPR system . Really helpful staff, who you can obviously tell enjoy their job and provide a wealth of information.
T. D.
Excellent museum providing very detailed information on Roman life at Hadrian's wall. Excellent exhibits and doesn't ignore Roman women living in Britain.
B. B.
It was good, but if I didn't have my English Heritage membership, I wouldn't have gone as it meant to have paid the single visit entry fee. I felt it was overpriced for what it was.
p. w.
Take a walk in the footsteps of the Romans. A fantastic insight into how the roman soldiers would have lived and fought. Its an amazing sight, seeing the wall in its splendor. Definitely worth a visit.
M. M.
Very interesting visit. We were lucky to join a free guided tour which made the whole experience even better. Ian our guide was extremely interesting and provided lots of background which helped bring the Fort to life. The art installation was very impressive and provided great views from the top. A very enjoyable visit.
M. D.
Housteads Fort museum was far too hot to stay in for long with a face mask on (some fans would've helped) but the site itself was very well maintained and easy to work out what the remains were of. Did a walk along the wall westwards for a couple of miles which was quite strenuous on a scorching hot day! Cafe served lovely snacks and ice-cream, but the queuing system was a bit haphazard. Pay for parking at the end, and the machines take cards not just cash.
R.
Was a lovely walk. We spent four hours chatting and walking. Not too steep.
M.
Great views, lovely tiny museum, a great place to visit
S. W.
Long walk uphill to get to the Fort which was some what unexpected. Due to covid restrictions there was a queue for the museum which we just didn't leave time for - having had to book our entry time in advance for all our sightseeing across the day. The first itself is amazing and there are plenty of information boards to help envisage it as it was. Needed longer here to really get the full experience. Not ideal for those with mobility issues or children in prams given the path to the Fort.
G. S.
The staff are so helpful and friendly. The dog was allowed everywhere except in the museum and the walk from the bottom to the top is 0.5 miles but is not a bad walk at all!
D. Y.
A UNESCO heritage site which very well preserves the remains of Roman fort taking us back to AD era of how Romans used to live and protect their kingdom. Entry to the site is free for NT and EH members and payable to non members for £10 an adult which covers both museum and fort. It takes a good 1-1.5hrs to cover the site. There is ample parking onsite which is payable when you exit. Options for tea, coffee and cake also available at the cafe. If you have time you can also take a walk along the Hadrian wall from this site.
M. “. A.
Very historical place with loads to see and do , nice cafe when you're hungry and thirsty after a walk a long Hadrian's wall...I highly recommend walking from housesteads to steel rigg about 10k all in , you'll pass the famous sycamore gapp tree from the movie robin hood Prince of thieves with Kevin Costner in it 😍
L. W.
Excellent all round. Well laid out. Informative and friendly guides. We visited in superb weather. Stunning scenery and great to be able to walk along a section of the wall. Definitely recommend.
M. C.
Amazing place
Sam from the National Trust down in the main car park was very helpful 😊 …
A. B.
Great views over the surrounding countryside and worth the walk up to the Fort.
s. m.
Love this place. If you like history and Roman history it's a must
E. S.
Best place we stopped at for Hadrien's Wall. Got here late, am not before closing, but systems last closing to hire the Wall.
FYI... the sheep were a bonus for our dog who's breed is part herd dog, even though he was never let off his lead.
J. L.
Although not a great deal remains there is enough to provide an intriguing insight into the life of Roman soldiers on the edge of their empire.
Information boards are provided around the site to explain the various remains.
The site is a short walk from the car park but uphill so would prove difficult for anyone with accessibility problems.
There is a museum on site and a cafe and gift shop at the entrance by the car park.
Certainly worth a visit even if not walking the wall but driving anywhere nearby.
E. K.
Great for short or long trip. Easy access, beautiful views, parking is not free, facilities on site
K. K.
Wow! Great info and little play area and cafe off the road. Walked up to the Wall and Fort, just breathtaking. Whole family loved it, open space, the history and wonderful installation we climbed up for even better views.
M. M.
Loved this place set high up on the hillside. The information boards spread around the site let you know what area you're looking at eg granary, barracks, bakery etc. The artist's drawings on the information boards allow you to look at the current foundations and imagine what this site would have looked like when occupied.
It's worthwhile visiting the museum first to get a sense of the history of the settlement here.
Before you climb the hill to the Fort there is a Caffe at the start of the path next to the Car Park.
Parking Cost is £3 for 3 hours, the ANPR system allows you to pay before leaving, and the machine accepts cards.
J. B.
Love this. It's a nice walk to the fort and wall which sets it off nicely from the road. The views are magnificent! The walk is a bit hilly but nothing too difficult.
p.
Lovely Roman fort near Hadrians wall. Free entry to both NT and EH members. The site is jointly managed by the two. Large car parking facilities, although not managed by NT or EH (council owned) so is £3 payable on exit (ANPR camera controlled) card only. Cafe, toilets and an indoor museum before you visits the ruins. TIP: if you want to visit Hadrians Wall, you CANNOT access the wall via the ruins. You can view the wall, but you can’t get up close unless you exit the ruins and walk around the whole site to access the public footpath. It was frustrating not being able to access the footpath via the fort, but I assume that is to prevent people walking into the fort without paying. I suggest visiting the wall first, THEN the fort. You will see what I mean when viewing the site map, it will make sense. Also the fort is up a VERY steep hill, be aware if taking a buggy, wheelchair ect. Views from the fort are truly stunning and it’s worth a visit.
J. B.
Such a fantastic site with equally fantastic views. There's an informative museum suitable for kids
J. R.
An interesting historical visit with plenty of helpful information.
English Heritage staff at car park area were friendly but those further up at the fort and museum were a little frosty and would benefit from a little work on their customer service skills.
Pricey at around £23 for family of 4 when you consider that you can view the site for free if you omit the small, basic museum and walking around the inside of the site of the Fort. In hindsight, wish we'd not paid as would have still got an adequate experience walking around the outside instead. The wall itself is free to view and walk along.
There are several Hadrians Wall forts in the area but the admission fee is not transferable which doesn't make sense as it would have been nice to see the others too.
Steep access from car park so unsuitable for those with mobility issues. Car park was extra cost.
Regardless, a valuable piece of British history and some wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.
O. W.
really good. the commemorative artwork (summer 2022) was amazing.
a. w.
Had a great day walking the wall ,parking was good with plenty of room
Bit of a hike up the hill to the ruin's if you on the frail side, walking around the ruin's was interesting before our walk to sycamore gap and back took about three an a half hours with time for a lunch stop.
A good day out but the art installation was in my opinion out of place
and not needed in such a buitifull area .
D. M.
Nice small museum and lovely views from the fort itself
D. J.
Well presented. Some struggled to make the climb from the car park to the Fort.
G. R.
Very good history lesson. Wind swept and amazing views.
S. R. (. W.
It was a lovely place, beautiful view and it was a nice walk. The weather wasn't on our side unfortunately, and the museum was shut (opens back up on the 17th of May). The staff where nice as well. I wouldn't say it was a full day of exploration but a very good stop and break point if you do want to explore for an hour or two, you can also walk along the wall for about 100 metres which was awesome, and had a lovely view as well.
C. S.
Great place. Especially if you are interested in early history and the Roman occupation. It's been 25 years since we last visited and even the landscape is unchanged. The staff on site are really friendly and knowledgeable. For me this is one of the best Roman sites in Britannia.
S. W.
Beautiful location.
Happy Birthday Hadrian's Wall
122AD-2022.
A. t.
I did like the whole visit. The views are fantastic . It was really good to follow the Wall from the fort out towards Sycamore Gap. But I'm sorry I am not a Roman Scholar or history buff , The Fort ruins looked like a pile of stones to me due to my being a philistine
b.
Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall, friendly and helpful staff, well spaced out in crowded areas for covid distancing. Water provided for dogs. Basic but good cafe offering. The walk up is around half a mile and could be challenging for some. Taking your time is advised. Overall very good day out.
S. C.
A fascinating site to visit and wander round but....get there early before it gets too crowded.
Great views of Hadrian's Wall and well preserved and maintained remains but I thought Chesters did a better job on the communication and explanation via display boards of what each area was.
The current art installation at the gate through the wall was well done and gave you the chance to stand at the original height of the tower. Great fun and a masterclass in scaffolding work, as several people we spoke to agreed.
Good little museum and gift shop and the video from the woman doing the art installation was worthwhile watching.
Busy, busy, busy......get there early!!!
L. C. R.
The whole length of Hadrian's wall is a worthy trip. We enjoyed this spot and makes for easy walks. Shop is available for refreshments and snacks.
F. H.
Steep hill to climb up to the fort and museum from the car park but worth it for the spectacular views and historical interest.
B. T.
Fabulous place . . lovely walk to get up to the fort and very interesting once you get there. Museum and shop plus a yummy cafe....our dog enjoyed the day out too ☺️
L. F.
Lovely place, looking around the ruins and adjoining hadrians wall
N. P.
As we were staying in the area a visit to Hadrians wall was a must. This roman fort had the wall as well as a large area to explore. I would definitely advise getting the guide book as it explains what each area of the ruin is what and how the Romans used it. It was a bit of a hike up the hill but well worth it.
l. b.
A lovely place to spent with family and specially with kids. Quite a challenge to walk up the hills and discover the amazing history of England. Worth it and will recommend .
S. P.
Nice place to visit to see some history. Museum was closed due to covid. Still nice to see the ruins.
I recommend go for hike and along the wall and go see sycamore gap about an hour hike. Car park is only £3 for first 3 hours, then £2 every hour after.
f. 6.
Fantastic site in an amazing location. Very evocative. Somewhat different to the featureless fens where I live! Good little visitor center, very well done and interesting video presentation, small but informative display of finds and gorgeous apple and cinnamon ice cream!
R. P.
The attraction is the preserved ruins of a Roman fort, and the wall itself (see photo). The bit you pay for is a small (one room) museum and the fort with free guided tours. The colourful fort tower is of no historical value; it is more an artist's project for promoting inclusion etc. Of more historical interest are features such as the army latrines! The fort is up quite a steep climb, so bear that in mind. The cafe is nice, but somewhat overpriced and what is on offer is not full hot meals.
The wall itself, which appears to have been reconstructed but not full height (it originally stood at 4m) is free of charge. Nearby there are sections of the wall which have been better preserved and are free of charge, such as Brunton Turret.
H. C.
Quite a climb for me. Worth it for the Fort and views. Current installation gives you a great sense of scale of the original North gate. A few more benches would be welcomed by this oldie.
M. H.
Fantastic day, great piece of history in the hills of Northumberland. There is a parking charge as ar park is run bu National Parks. 15 mins free, or £3 for full day. There are toilets (they were clean) and dogs are welcome too. There os a steep footpath up, but once at the top the views are amazing. Well worth a visit.
W. D.
It's a lovely site in itself but the museum is a little disappointing compared to that of vindolanda and it's extensive finds just down the road of similar fort size. You can of course walk around the outside for free or £10 per adult if you wish to view the museum and the fort .
This is an English heritage run site. There is also bus links the hadriens wall bus A122 stops at the carpark where the cafe is situated. And good facilities for disabled however the site is steep due to the landscape .
E. D.
The car parking is expensive and card only. The café is nice but could be better if the windows upstairs afforded a view of the ruins. The good is ok but again expensive The admission after a uphill walk of 500m is £10 .In my opinion it is very expensive and wholly unjustified.
Overall worth the trip but pricey if these places want visitors to return they have to rethink the pricing policy.
T.
Ruins of a Roman fort along Hadrian's wall across Britain. A full Legion was employed in guarding the border. This was the edge of the Roman Empire at its most expansive. Worth a visit.
N. B.
This is brilliant experience and on a bright sunny day rates amongst the top attractions in the UK. Remember this place is almost two thousand years old ... imagine it in the hay day, the middle of winter, take yourself back to what it must have been like for the troops from warmer climes, the Vincus occupants from local surroundings, and the buzz of trade and taxation .... marvellous !
L. M.
Wonderful first brilliant views. Walked up to and around fort then along part of Hadrian's wall. Had coffee in the café at bottom. Entry is £10 per adult quite expensive. Dogs to be kept on leads. But no bins apart from at the bottom at car park!
J. P.
Fantastic insight into an important (and lesser known these days) part of our history. Seeing what remains of buildings near 2000 years old is fascinating, and the information plus small museum nearby helps to bring this to life and imagine what it was like back then.
Very small gift shop/cafe near the car park, parking is ANPR and pay before you leave using your number plate. Short walk up hill to the fort remains so decent footwear required certainly.
i. h.
Great for a walk stunning views of hadrian wall, carry on up to sycamore gap the famous tree set in the dip .
B. A.
This is the best fort on Hadrian’s wall. If you have limited time then just see this one.
Access is hard, it’s 500 m walk from the car park. If you have mobility issues, go to another fort with easier access.
It’s reasonable well preserved, signage is good and the fort is in an amazing hilltop location.
The only downside (aside from the walk) is that you have to pay for parking (it’s not English Heritage owned parking) and it’s fairly busy.
B. Z.
Would have been great if I didn't catch whatever germs that landed me in a hotel bed for 3 days. Currently sitting on a cold rock at the wall because I am too exhaustef to walk the little rest of the way up the hill.
R. B.
Visited on our way back from Newcastle to Liverpool. National Trust members go free even though it is a English Heritage site.
Cafe and toilets at the bottom near car park (National Trust) and then there is an uphill walk from there when you reach the museum where they have ticket desk.
No proper toilets at the top although they have porta cabins apparently with no water.
Bear in mind that if you have difficulty walking up the hill due to a condition then u can just park at the top as told by National Trust staff.
It is a very historic place and all open, we had an art exhibition on (colourful temporary copy of the North Gate) which was wonderful. There was also a trail for the kids at the time as we visited during October holidays.
Worth a visit even if you are somewhat interested in history.
F. L.
Currently an art installation - views from miles when you climb up inside!
A. M.
Lovely place, bit of a walk up to the site about half mile but well worth it, fantastic views. Toilet at entrance in car park. Pay for car park on leaving uses NPR (number plate recognition).Staff very helpful. Small shop and museum at top near fort. Larger shop at car park.
J. T.
Lovely land, well preserved Roman Fort set in the beautiful Northumberland National Park, with good access to the Hadrian's Wall walking route.
M. H.
Fascinating and impressive Roman remains.
D. W.
Beautifully Historic Romanic Attraction that lies at the top of a picturesque and idyllic hill and is part of the Historical Wonder that is Hadrian's Wall. Access to the site is on foot and takes approx 5-10 minutes walk from the Main Car Park. Once you get the site there is a small museum and The Roman Fort itself to see. The Museum as previously is small in size but details a very informative exhibition about the Romans coming to Britain, how Hadrian's Wall came into being, The History of Housesteads Fort and What Life was like. In the exhibition there is a small but very interesting video to watch on the site and you can pretty awesome artefacts such as pottery and structural masonry. The Fort itself is fairly decent in size and you can wonder at the beauty of the architecture and also view some interesting informative information boards as you wonder round. The Fort itself has one of the best examples of a near complete latrine there is around of any of the Roman sites in the UK. You can also take the time to wonder further afield and view the famous Sycamore Gap which people can remember from the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Film from the 1990s. Overall this is a great place to visit and one most lovers of Roman History and Hadrians Wall will enjoy and a visit you can also enjoy as part of the Hadrian's Wall Experience.
S. H.
Absolutely brilliant, even the weather was calm, warm & clear. Museum was small but good too.
K. M.
This is a good place to visit, even in the pouring rain (as we had). The little museum and film is very interesting, and gives great context to the ruins you can explore, and how they would have looked and been used. We enjoyed the view of Hadrian's wall stretching out on either side of the fort, and the various information plaques around the fort with more information about each section. A really great look into that part of British history! Staff were friendly and helpful, as always at this kind of attraction throughout the UK.
D. F.
Would have been 5 stars if they'd not built that monstrosity of an "art installation". It was awful.
People go to the Wall for the history and the archaeology. They go for the scenery and the bleakness of the wild open landscape.
It was not the place for that heap of junk. Completely spoiled the atmosphere. Whoever, signed up for this from English Heritage needs removing from their post
S. F.
We actually drove past there to go else where and the other place was closed thankfully omg what a little gem. This place is absolutely amazing the staff are brilliant very helpful polite and extremely knowledgeable. The staff at the bottom shop and at the museum gave us so much information entry price is a little over £8 each that's entry to the museum and watch a 7-8 minute film definitely worth the money. Parking is £3 for upto 3hrs and £2 every hr there on after or £10 all day you pay at the end of your visit and it calculates the cost through ampr. It really is an excellent day out for all ages and dogs to see the old fort and walk on Hadrian's wall I honestly can't recommend this place enough.
N. A.
Really nice historical site. Kids enjoyed it as they could use what they've learned today as part of their school project.
Weather wasn't great and it can be extremely windy up there so I would advice to dress up for the occasion. Would also recommend wheelies or walking boats.
M. I.
Lovely piece of roman history in UK.
Unfortunately we can't visit the ruins, because limited places to be booked online. Also museum available. Just book online before you go !
A. W.
Loved this! Quite a climb up to the Fort, but worth it! They do offer an alternative route too. Highly recommended!
A. G.
Well preserved site with breathe taking views of the surrounding area. Housesteads was a wall fort and its remains are a testament to its construction. A walk takes you to the nearby Milecastle 37, West of the fort. There's a small museum and gift shop at the site of the fort as well as a shop by the car park. The walk up to the fort is steep but not far. The site is advertised mainly as English Heritage, but National Trust membership will also get you in here without having to pay.
C. H.
Stopped off here on our way home to Scotland, and have to say it was well worth the visit. As a member in the National Trust for Scotland, we got free entry to the site. However you still have to pay for parking, which is ok as it pays for the site. If you have mobility issues, it’s a long walk from the car park to the site on top of the hill. There are toilets at the shop at the car park, and portaloos half walk up behind the museum.
The views are spectacular from the top, looking north towards scotland and the tribal lands. Walking around the site, there are boards explaining what each ruin is, and the part it played in years gone by. The ground was soft under foot, and had rained just before we arrived. So wear appropriate footwear. It’s very windy up top, so again wear the right clothing.
Would we go again?
Probably not, as there are plenty of other roman sites scattered along the route of the wall. Which make us now now want to explore them.
Is it worth a visit?
Definitely, a must do especially with children, to explore and see where the Romans lived and worked
T. W.
Great remains of the old fort. Lots of interesting info signs to explain what each room was used for.
The museum is really good too but very small. Lots of info and quite a few artifacts on display.
Nice walk up to the fort from the car park, takes about 5mins. You can walk along the wall from here too.
Car park is free for 15mins, then £3 for 3 hours which isnt too expensive.
J. W.
Brilliant, love this place. Amazing 360 degree views, fascinating fort and lots of history. Great countryside for walking too. Fairly steep 1/2 mile walk up to the fort. Owned by both English Heritage and the National Trust. Booking required.
A. L.
Wonderful ruins to visit if one likes such places. For those walking along Hadrian's wall, this is on the way and a nice addition to the trip. There is detailed information available at the site and one can clearly see the engineering prowess of the Roman legions for themselves. Definitely recommend. Plenty of parking space and if you are a National Trust or English Heritage Member its even better as this is a jointly managed site.
C. T.
Very interesting! The variety of buildings combined with the museum with artifacts & 6min video (while seated), & view down onto Hadrian's wall & the beautiful countryside, made the long walk up hill worthwhile. There's also a bench at the top & picnic tables at the entrance. The playground just inside the ticketed area looks like fun, but my kids were too tired after the walk to even think about climbing the slide.
The walk through sheep fields also afforded us a chance to feel the discarded Tufts of wool & compare them to our merino wool back home.
All the staff seemed friendly.
C. &. T. V.
Fun but of history with beautiful views and easy access to hiking. 2 mile walk along the wall to the sycamore gap. 1/2 mile walk from parking lot.
T. B.
Really good fun to explore. It's all outdoors so make sure u go on a sunny day. You can freely climb all over the ruins which is great as it really makes this place way more fun.
Note it's a 15min walk from the car park.
C. T. P. P.
We visited while restrictions were still in place, booking our tickets ahead.
The musuem was closed, but the toilets were open and bright and clean. The first itself is open air so free from many restrictions. It wasn't the brightesy day, but it was thankfully dry. There are lots of information boards around the Fort and it was fascinating to learn about the broader history of the Fort.
Staff were knowledgeable and helpful, the shop is small but well stocked with food and drinks. They were happy to point us in the right direction for a circular walk along the wall to Sycamore Gap and back. We ended up buying a full map of the wall and several bottles of mead on our return.
The car park is incredibly expensive, if you will be visiting anywhere on the wall more than 4 times a year I definitely recommend getting an annual pass for parking. It's pay on exit so make sure you read the charges first and time your visit accordingly.
D. Y.
Well worth visiting, situated in a beautiful hillside location with views in all directions. Informative notice boards provide the background to life in fort as does the adjacent museum.
It is also possible to walk a stretch of the wall direct from the fort with great all round views. Adjacent to the car park (reasonable charges apply) are a cafe and toilets.
S. S.
The property is owned by English heritage so it makes sense to have a membership. There is a good car park and other facilities.
The main site is a short walk away from the entrance. One can see a rather well preserved Roman fort including the praetorium, grain stores, roman loos, ovens, etc. The wall to the west will lead the walker to Sycamore gap and beyond and is dotted with remains of fortlets and mile castles
I. P.
Great site to include on a Roman visit
J. P.
Interesting visit to see 2000 year old ruins that have held together remarkably well.
Worth the short trek up there for the view as well
R. C.
Awesome, so much great history in a beautiful location. Friendly staff. Be sure to watch the short video in the back of the museum. Walking along the wall is definitely worth the walk too.
A. H.
Classic walk along the wall.
D. H.
Good footpaths to Fort and great information plaques. Shop had shut early so unable to get drinks after our walk but thoroughly enjoyed the scenery.
C. L.
An amazing site, great Roman fort ruin. The Roman toilet block was well preserved and interesting seeing all the plumbing in place. But of a small treck upa hill to get to the site, but worth it. Fort is joined on to the Hadrian's wall, can walk from the fort to a decent ruin of a mile castle. Great site!
G. H.
I first visited Housesteads in 1973 when the whole area seemed quieter and a lot more remote, but that is the price of progress. There is a car park machine which you need to pay before you leave but the charges are reasonable. English Heritage look after the attraction and you enter via their shop and either purchase your ticket or show your membership card, there is a make-your-own coffee machine downstairs and a seating area upstairs. There is a walk of perhaps half a mile across the moorland to the museum and the fort itself. The museum, although small, is worth looking around and offers guided tours around the fort. The fort is built against the Whin Sill which gives improved protection against the northern tribes who were never quelled by the Romans. You can see Hadrian's wall stretching into the distance. There are information boards around the place describing what each of the places was used for.
E. L.
There is plenty to see here and, I imagine, more in the future as I'm sure there will be more excavations to come. Housesteads is set high up on a ridge and it's quite a steep walk to get up there, about 750 metres after passing through the ticket entrance. Alongside the remains of the fort there is a museum and shop, with an explanatory video at the rear of the museum. There is also a shop at the ticket entrance and seating upstairs which may be a café although we didn't investigate.
Parking is independent so there is no refund paid as at other centres but it's £3 for 3 hours which should be time enough. A photo is taken of your registration number on arrival and payment is made when you leave.
Housesteads is well worth a visit, watch the video first then there are plenty of information boards to read as you walk around the site.
L. H.
Great example if a Roman fort located right on the wall. If you visit make sure to take time to walk to the mile fort that is about half a mile along the wall. To access leave the fort turn right and follow the fort wall to its end the turn right again to wall uphill to the wall. Hi through the singposted gate turn left and follow the wall uphill untill you reach the mile fort. There is no proper path up to the gate it isxacross grass and is steep. On wet days can be difficult to negotiate. The museum attached to the first is small and has limited refreshment facilities. The shop at the bottom by the car park is larger and has more options. National Trust members free but you will still need to pay the pay as you leave car parking fee. Check opening as the fort opperates on English heritage opening hours.
S. W.
Fantastic historical site. Very impressive lovely location. Good parking. Loos at the car park where there is a shop. There is also a small museum up by the Fort site which is a short walk up a hill. Very well maintained so glad I went.
S. J.
The better of the forts to see! Plenty of photos on the English Heritage site. Big site, interesting and superb views and has large parts of the wall still intact.
R. M.
Very interesting to place to walk around and the fort is very good too.
L.
It's good to see and walk around, feels very historical. Unfortunately It was very misty and rainy when I explored the ruins however it was still a great day out with lots to see and a wide area to look around and learn about.
It's not a place for everyone but overall it's quite a well known landmark with great views of the countryside even in the mist and fog you can enjoy the experience.
Finally they have 2 lovely little gift shops with a small museum like area in the bigger one. I would say it's best experienced on a clear day or even better a hot summers day with a picnic. 👍
A. S.
A well-preserved Roman fort overlooking Kielder Forest National Park and right on the course of Hadrian's Wall. Entrance is free for both National Trust and English Heritage members but everyone must pay for parking.
Be aware that it is a bit of walk up some steep hills to get to the museum and Fort and the decent toilets are down by the car park, so consider this before you start your climb. The views are well worth it.
For those with limited mobility you can drive direct up to the museum at the top, though the fort itself is built onto the steep hillside and the incline may present difficulty with getting around.
The museum is small but has an informative video that is worth a watch before exploring and I would recommend buying a guide book as, although there are plenty of uncovered remains to look at, you will get much more out of your visit this way.
With the kids we spent about an hour looking around the site but an adult-only party may well take longer. Bring warm clothes as it is extremely windy up at the top as it is exposed.
Drinks and snacks are available both at the museum and at the entrance by the car park and there is inside seating upstairs there if you do not wish to picnic in the available outside areas. There is also a (small but enjoyable) playground for children.
C. D.
Love the history, often rains, dress warm, a lot of places climbing is involved.
G. S.
Very interestic historical place!
M. B.
What a fantastic experience - simply can't beat "standing in the shoes" of the legionnaires who lived worked and fought here - a tremendous example of the ingenuity and skill of the Roman Empire - the logistical and engineering ability is unparalleled and would not look amiss in a modern day army - the surrounding vista demonstrates the way the architects saw the perfect place to dominate the skyline
N. P.
If you are into Roman history then you cannot miss Houseteads. Great example of a Roman fort right on the wall itself. Be prepared for a bit of a hike to the fort itself from the visitors centre and it's pretty steep too. Reward is great views and very interesting ruins.
l. w.
Great to see building from nearly 2 thousand years ago. So much still left. So enjoyed showing it to my grandsons who enjoyed their visit. Views were spectacular although it was a hard climb to the top
R. S.
If you like Roman ruins you'll love this place. It's a bit out of the way, 30 miles west of Newcastle, England. This is supposed to be the best preserved Roman fort along Hadrian's Wall. The wall stretches across most of England a little south of the Scottish border.
J. B.
Nice little museum to tour with a short video presentation before walking around the fort. Friendly staff.
It's a short hike from the parking lot to the actual fort and museum but I believe they will let people with mobility issues drive/be driven the 1/4 mile (at least) walk to the museum and fort. You'd have to ask. It gets extremely busy in the summer so think about visiting in the colder wetter months to avoid crowds. Small fee for parking.
A. W.
Good experiance, allow at least 15-20mins to get from car park to fort, also it's up a very steep hill
Lots of info and the museum is informative
M.
Interesting little fort to go visit, right on Hadrians Wall. It is quite popular so expect a few people to be there even with Covid 19 restrictions on the amount of people allowed on site. There is a small museum with some interesting information, and a few refreshments. There is quite a walk up to the site and those who aren't so good at walking might struggle a little. See the website for more information. Also, be aware there is an entry fee which in my opinion is well worth it. Perhaps someday it will become the next Vindolanda.
I. A.
Good car park, friendly staff and well marked paths to the actual remains all made a good initial impression. The video that outlined the history of Housesteads was just right in terms of duration and detail, especially for younger children. All this was topped off by great, expansive views of the surrounding windswept and unspoilt countryside.
T. P. (.
nice view of wall (free of charge), parking for £3 for 3 hrs and more for additional hours, tiny museum with more things to sell than exposition. If price will be lower than £8.1 per person, it would be great.
T. G.
My wife found the latrines particularly interesting but also the artifacts in the on site museum. The site is well worth a visit as is the NT cafe by the car park which was serving excellent curried cauliflower pasties!
D. R.
Absolutely amazing place with great information on the local history as well as the overall for the period. Lovely staff and highly recommend picking up some of the honey mead. Deaffo regret not picking up a couple more bottles!
B. B.
We return many times to this fantastic place.
You can have 4 seasons in an hour up there so always dress appropriately
G. F.
Visitor center providing a great introduction video to the Roman occupation here and the site. A short walk up to the site (not suitable for infirm) provides viewing the excellently preserved Roman remains of the Forte, covering bath houses, a hospital, headquarters, barracks, toilet block... And great views of Hadrian's wall.
D. L.
In Rome you can not see the military power of the empire. Here I have the first hint of how powerful they were and how they bring their knowledge to every corner of the empire. Definitely worth a visit to have a whole picture of Rome Empire. And have a GOT like experience of The Wall.
G. W.
We had to dodge very heavy showers to walk up to the fort, and consequently ran out of time to look at the wall and fort. Seeing as we had visited Vindolanda earlier in the day we opted to see and walk on the wall, which is one of the few places where you are able to do it. A very worthwhile visit and I wish we had got there earlier. The fort and wall is NT/English Heritage and the car park £4 for 4 hours.
A. P.
The weather was wild, but a really good day. Museum was good and the staff really friendly and helpful. We will go back on a less blustery day for the Sycamore Gap walk.
D. R.
This is where Hadrian's wall started. The wall is in pretty good shape here, as are the outlines of the fort and its structures. The museum has informative displays. This is one of the few places where you can walk on the wall.
h. c.
Housesteads is ok but the problem is the parking machine. It takes your card and says transaction complete but no money is taken from your account. So unless you check you can end up with a parking fine. Seems they know about the problem and say they have had people to try to fix it.if it's not working as it should why is not closed off.
T. 7.
Impressive remains of a long gone race who were determined to make sure that the ancient Scots did not upset their way of life. There is an interesting museum with various artifacts gathered across the years from the site. Nice walks by the side of the wall in both directions. The site is maintained by the National Trust and English Heritage jointly.
P. B.
Very interesting and educational. It's great to see the wall and foundations of the Roman Fort. I am surprised that visitors can walk over the stones. The museum does repeat some of the information on the boards around the fort ruins.
E. R.
Interesting history and splendid views both North and South. Plenty to explore.
A. B.
Satnav was spot on. Be prepared for a steep walk up to the visitor centre from the car park. Well worth the effort on arrival!
Staff were friendly and helpful in guiding you where you wanted/needed to go.
Decent weather is, in my opinion, essential to be able to explore and appreciate this historic site. Not only do you have the fort remains but the stretches of Hadrian's Wall to the east and west.
A museum and gift shop are on site as well as a National Trust cafeteria by the car park.
Moderately expensive admission which is free for English Heritage members.
Highly recommend!
P. C.
This is a marvelous site. Full of history and meaning. You do need to be able to walk a long way down and up hills. It is difficult for people with mobility issues. If there is disabled access, it was not obvious.
M. F.
Great place to see part of Hadrian's wall and remains of a Roman fort. Small but interesting museum and friendly and helpful staff. Worth the £10 entrance fee.
M. G.
Brilliant site to visit. Climbing on the walls is allowed. Kids enjoyed it. Real touchable history. Views across to Keilder forest. Very very hilly.
J. F.
Enthusiastic staff who are very knowledgeable. Interesting place if you are into Romans and visual history. Spent a couple of hours wandering around.
a. s.
Best of the Roman sites. We stayed there for 5 hours. Excellent museum
A. S.
Very part of the Hadrian’s wall, absolutely worth a visit. Have some good shoes and clothes, as it is a bit of a hike (quite easy to be honest).
H. d.
Short sharp climb but with spectacular views from the top. Lots left of the fort and clear signage. The wind was very strong today and gave a sense of how the soldiers must have felt about their current posting
M. V.
It was pouring rain and in the middle of nowhere, but it was worth the trip. The museum had great displays and items found, and while only foundations exit, it was still a sprawling fort and it well signed/posted. You can see Hadrians Wall stretch out into the distance.
F. M.
Very interesting remains are still here after such a long time
Nice walking and very scenic
P. F.
Excellent historical site where you can see the scale of a Roman fort and the best preserved Roman toilet in the UK😀. The adjacent museum is very informative with plans and models of the first in its Roman period. …
B. F.
What a wonderful find. A truly wonderful place with knowledgable staff. This place is a gem - take your time exploring it. It is fascinating and the free information on the many boards was so helpful and educational.
The staff near the Fort and in the cafe were all so helpful and friendly.
S. W.
A fascinating frontier fort along Hadrians Wall at the Northern defences of the Roman Empire. Magestic views too. Best Roman bogs.
M. E.
Great site to visit, even if you dont like walking up hill. Really interesting to see how they lived. Commanding views of Keilder in the distance. What was really great, I didn't see one 'keep off' sign. The young ones were almost encouraged to climb on the walls.
J. M.
Nice remains of a Roman fort but vindolanda down the road is much better and has more to see
T. L.
Fantastic view from the top however, getting to the top requires a certain level of fitness! The fort is beautifully preserved but we would have preferred to see it bought to life with more detailed signage because without a guided tour, explanations were missing. We would have loved a cup of tea at the top but hey, that's just us being English!
M. F.
Visit several times on family holidays many years ago, great to revisit. Reasonable parking cost and entry fee includes access to both the fort and museum
Was great fun standing at the North Gate looking out onto what was the very edge of the Roman empire with everything behind you to the South being under Roman rule 😊 …
M. B.
Nice site of fort. Small museum. Bit of a trek from car park up 1 in 4 hill on gravel track.
A. Z.
Great day out. Have to buy ticket to see the fort. Roman toilets in east side. Good chuck.of Hadrian's wall to the back of the boundary and also nice view of wall in distance. Half a mile uphill walk from visitor centre. Toilets are there at visitors centre. They also have drinks and sandwiches.and a microwave to warm food. Parking is £1/ hr and payable when leaving. Machine takes card. Worth a visit.
N. B.
Had a good walk round with the dog and kids. The ruins are interesting, as was the art installation.
T. W.
An interesting place to visit if you're interested in Romans or British history, but be prepared for the weather.
T. E.
Lifelong ambition of seeing Hadrian's Wall did not dissappoint. Fantastic site with excellent information boards to fully immerse you into the first few centuries AD.
R. T.
A short walk from the main road uphill. Most of the foundations are still there and you can walk on and along the wall at the northwest corner of the fort.
A. B.
Beautiful site with lots of interesting remains and great views of the other side of the wall - museum is smaller than expected though.
r. g.
I walked the whole length of hadrian's wall for a charity called kaleidoscope for mental health and suicide prevention the scenery and our history of the romans is amazing. This is a must see place homestead roman fort has some great scenery and stunning ruins of the Roman fort.
L. A.
Never been to see this and must say found it extremely interesting. Again used National Trust for Scotland for free entry. Highly recommend anyone to join National Trust (any one will do ) as you normally get free entry to any UK National Trust location.
P. R.
You feel history living here and have amazing sights to see. Fantastic walk and learning experience, wouldn't have missed this for the world.
l. g.
This is a hidden gem. Well sign posted. Staff can't do enough for you. It's also a good place to set off and walk off as it's high up with excellent views.
Loved reading about a garnet ring found in the drains. That's what archaeology us all about past stories.
D. W.
Brilliant walk and amazing views. Including the outstanding sycamore gap.
L. C.
Have visited here many times but horrified by the monstrous art installation that is just a horrendous blot on this beautiful landscape. Why not add a few fairground rides around the site too?
G. N.
See 2000 years of our country s history and take your best friend too. Cafe is dog friendly too.
J. L.
Well consolidated and looked after site. There is a charge for the car park that you pay when you leave, but the machine accepts card payment. There is a 15 minute uphill walk to the site, and the fort itself is on quite a slope so bring sensible shoes.
There's a museum and gift shop near the top of the path after the car park, with a short film introducing the site.
Note that the land is used for sheep grazing, so the grass off the path is generally uneven, with plenty of sheep droppings around.
If you have seen Vindolanda first then Housesteads is a bit more 'grassroots' as an attraction, but can definitely be seen as more adventurous.
D. M.
Its a half mile walk from the parking lot uphill to see a pile of rocks. After you walk the half mile you come to another visitors center/museum (small) which has a movie you can watch before or after you look at the piles of rocks. Yes the rocks are still in the outline of the different dwellings. Stand on Hadrians wall, get your photo and move on. Not sure if hadrians wall has a place to see it without the walk..but if it does go there.
L. K.
Lovely afternoon out with family. The walk is a bit up and down but we loved it.
R. M.
Really interesting planned to visit. The free guided tour is well worth it and we learnt a lot of information. Be aware it is a step climb up and the ground can be uneven. In clear weather the views would be brilliant.
S. L.
A great historic place to visit, lovely panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Very helpful staff at the gift shop and lots of friendly advice
R. C.
An well preserved Roman fort in stunning surroundings. Friendly, helpful staff and a very informative museum
M. E.
Love this part of the country, fantastic views and a good day out. The tourist centre is worth a visit.
M. W.
Very helpful guide, who was there for a primary school. He was much mute informative than the explanatory panels. The site itself is interesting for any age over about seven
A. W.
Friendly and helpful staff and a super café
K. R.
Be prepared for a walk. Not really buggy friendly due to stones put down on path up there. Staff are really friendly. Has a great selection of artifacts from all walks life at this ancient fort. Views are beautiful.
P. S.
A great day out! Very interesting site with a very worth while tour. Take the opportunity to have a walk to the sycamore tree which featured in the film Robin Hood. The only negative i can think off is the car park price.
B. H.
The buildings are omly a few blocks high but the outlines are there of more than 20 buildings. It is amazing to consider that these biildings were here over 1,500 years ago.
J. B.
Really great experience! Lovely walk up to fort (quite a steep hill!) and brilliant once up there. The view is incredible. Lovely, clean visitor centre with hot drinks, toilets and gift shop. Really worth a visit.
S. S.
A treat of a place to visit. Prebooking because of the Covid conspiracy but don't let that put you off. Worth a visit.
P.
Breathtaking scenery if you follow the wall a few hundred meters to the west. Museum was ok. I can recommend if you want to go outside and enjoy historic places in the nature
M. F.
Great place to visit Hadrians Wall from. Make sure to catch one of the free guided tours of the fort to fully experience the Fort.
g. s.
Nice section of Hadrians wall to walk on! Free to walk and pay to walk around the Fort and museum if you want.
D. U.
Only went there for a walk along the wall, £3 for parking and it initially looked as if you paid £8 just to access the path but it's free if you don't want access to the fort or museum.
G. S.
Amazing remains of Hadrians Wall and Roman buildings, not our first visit and hopefully not our last.
H. M.
Interesting place to visit. The information is fun and okey but they could have added way more information to give a more clear idea of the whole site. It is left with sheep’s poopoo on some of the sites.
C. E.
Lovely, friendly staff. Beautiful part of the wall to walk along. Well work a walk up to the fort on the wall if nothing else but further if you can. Walk up to the top of the field and turn left. Picturesque scenery.
M. X.
Great place, part of the national trust, very interesting. Has a little play area for the kids at the bottom by the entrance, quite a steep walk to get to the fort but worth it when u get to the top and see the lovely views and the history.
M. N.
An old favourite of mine long overdue a visit. Can be a bit blustery up there but the weather last week made it even more memorable. Excellent to visit at any time but a fine day makes a difference.
T. M.
Great views of the wall and good surrounding facilities. If you want to visit Hadrian's wall, Housesteads is your best option.
S. P.
If you are interested in Roman British history this is a must.
The location is amazing and there is a great section of Hadrians Wall to walk. Very helpful information on site too.
Only downside is the cost to park a car
A. C.
Great museum. Really good for kids. If taking elderly people who struggle with walking. You can drive to the farm house near museum rather than cafe car park, but it's still a fair walk to the Fort remains and Hadrians wall. Nice Park at back of cafe. Lots of information fir history buffs and great shop at museum.
G. A.
Very worthwhile to drive out to see not only the fort but the amazing countryside. Lots to read and relate to the ruins.
A. H.
What an amazing place! We've now seen three Roman forts in the local area (Housesteads, Vindalanda and Birdoswald). This is the best preserved of the three in my opinion and is the most impressive. Be warned the fort is a good 10 to 15 walk from the carpark and is fairly hard going with a couple of very steep paths however the ruins that await are well worth the trek. As you arrive at the ruins there is a small museum were you can pick up basic refreshments (a cafe with a wider range is located by the carpark). I'd recommend the short film shown in the backroom as it gives a really clear explanation of the site. The guidebook is worth the money too (as are all the english heritage books) as it provides a clear walking tour. The views from the north wall are stunning with excellent views of the Hadrian's Wall. An oustanding place to visit and highly recommended.
d. d.
Beautiful place rich in history. Fantastic for walking and family picnics. Good toilets and facilities.
T. Y. a. Y. G.
Loved it here, especially being able to stand at the height the solders would have along the wall.
M. T.
Amazing site, the first ruins were very well presented, and the views from here and along the wall are stunning
L. H.
Free to English Heritage or £10. There is a car park but this is not English Heritage and you need to pay. It costs £3 for 3 hours and £2 for every hour after. You do not pay for the car parking until you have completed your visit. You enter your car registration and it calculates how much you owe. You then have to pay by card. There is a toilet and cafe next to the car park. There is no toilet near the fort. You will have to climb up to reach the fort and it is more than a ¼ mile away from the car park. There is a museum near the fort where you can purchase hot drinks. The fort covers a six acre site. There are information boards throughout the fort.
R. A.
Definitely part of our country's history that must be experienced. Cold with horizontal sleet one moment and sunshine the next....no wonder the Romans left.
R. M.
I am glad this was a joint English heritage and national trust place, very interesting and there was even a guided tour at no extra cost to the admission fee.
K. H.
Great day out with the family. Hilly to get up there but lovely views and a good walk
S. S.
Fort was good. Very disappointed that English Heritage members had to pay to park!!! Long walk fro the car park and no facilities for anyone who would find the walk difficult.
L. F.
A 2-3 hours would give ample time to see the remains of the fort, tour the small museum building and grab a bite at the coffe shop. One of the best stops along the wall.
L. M.
Loved loved loved .... If you love to take in the history of where you are and explore what shaped our history then this is the place for you .. The kids will love it if only to climb and run around and hopefully learn what the Fort and Hadrians Wall was for ...Dogs are welcome as long as on a lead. The only place they can't go into is the museum which is beside the fort ... It's not a big museum just a little bungalow size but is full of all the history of the why the what and the how Hadrians Wall and fort came about...
N. W. X.
Historical place to visit. Completed the whole place in 30 minutes. The walk along Hadrian's wall however was stunning.
K. B.
Love the place be careful of the parking fee's though!
A. S.
Vast Roman fort on Hadrian's wall a long hill to climb but very very worth it.
C. G.
Well preserved remains of a Roman fort and section of Hadrian's wall with a small museum, shop and café.
J. J.
Great walks from here. Car parking changes applicable if you're not a NT or NH member. Toilets, food and shop available. Good historical venue.
J. B.
See the wall, get informed about Roman life in Britain and enjoy the beautiful English countryside. Truly glorious!
P. R.
Excellent location for appreciation of Hadrian's Wall. It is up to a hill and next to a small cliff so it really feels like a defensive settlement
T. K.
It's quite a trek uphill to the Visitor Centre even before you go around the ruins, where there are several steep inclines and some of the walls are also very close together, so it's definitely not for the fainthearted. Birdoswald is smaller and on more even terrain, so I would suggest that as an alternative if you have any mild mobility problems. It also has a cafe and larger exhibition area there.
The Visitor Centre at Housesteads is quite small, but informative, and the guides at the entrance to the ruins themselves are very friendly and helpful.
D. T.
Covers a larger area than expected. Can walk alongside Hadrian's Wall from it. Apparently only section open to the public. Can picnic on the grass, picnic blankets provided free to borrow. Only disappointment was the tiny museum Have to pay to park as well as entry because car park operated by Northumbria National Park. Use pay machine when you are ready to leave. Uses ANPR cameras to calculate fee.
e. c.
Easy to get to. Good car park. Lots to look at stunning scenery.
A. S.
Extensive Roman Fort on the outskirts of Corbridge. Museum not open at moment. Good carparking
G. W.
Long walk to the Fort from the car park but great views and impressive remains.
j.
Came here on an exped journey with army cadets, views are amazing and the walk is good.
M. k.
Breath taking scenery, staff very friendly. The fort was huge and the chance to walk part of Hadrian's Wall was amazing.
C. B.
It is a Roman fort, one of the most northern, and there are not too many around. The trek from the car park to the fort is about 20 minutes, mostly uphill on a gravel walkway, for a person of average mobility.
In order to walk ON Hadrian's wall one must traipse for about 8 minutes through grass that is most likely wet (this is Scotland), avoiding sheep poop (the free range sheep will ignore you) and go through a gate to walk on the wall.
The wall is about 5 feet high and 5 feet wide.
D.
Historic landmark and it is still amazing there are remains of what it was a powerful roman empire.
M. A.
This is a large site, and required quite a lot of walking! There's great history here, and fantastic views.
i. c. H.
Had a great time. The weather wasn't good but still enjoyable. Can I take this opportunity to tell you about the books below, they Are available on Amazon and all profits will go to cancer research. And if this goes well hopefully diabetes research.
A. G.
Fantastic National Trust and English heritage site. Amazing how well preserved the foundations are
a. p.
Great place for fab scenery. Car park was £3.00, pay on exit.
M. A.
Very interesting museum and the fort basin a spectacular location. The walk to the fort was quite steep but I believe there was easier access for people who fi.d walking difficult
D. J.
Great spot to understand more about Hadrian’s Wall. The ruins of the Roman Fort are impressive and really start to give you a bigger picture of what this place must have been like back in the day.
P. N.
Great place to walk and experience Hadrians wall along with a Roman fort. Lots of parking but paid entry to the fort.
A. S.
Worth a visit, not for the mobility challenged because of steep climb.
G. C.
Great place steeped in history, beautiful location and views of Haidrians Wall
J.
Spent a good couple of hours here looking round the ruins. Taking in the views
R. C.
Amazing walk from Steel Rigg car park to Housesteads very scenic
C. H.
Great views. Enjoyed the walk. Kids like it also.
D.
A large site with some explanations. Quite a steep walk from car park but good paths.
A. P.
amazing place with great views staff were so helpful kind and respectful the kids loved it the only thing i would take note of if you have a slow or older car there is a few steep hills
C. T.
I really liked this place, it was a lovely day out.
If you've booked a slot: they check your ticket at the entrance to the ruins, not by the car park or in the museum. Wear good shoes as the walk up is gravel. They have really nice ice cream in the cafe next to the car park. You can pay the car park fee in advance when you arrive or just before you leave. We managed to find a spot even at 1pm on a sunny bank holiday Sunday.
A. D.
Nice site to visit. Views will be improved once the monstrous art display is taken down.
D. P.
An amazing place to visit especially at the moment when they have a gatehouse installation as well.
a. h.
Beautiful area with lots of open space, with all the history of the Roman fort.
M. S.
Great, children loved it. 6 year old birthday girl
Elsie managed to walk most of the way using her walking frame
J. H.
I visited this place back in June 1990, and I loved it. 😍 Highly recommended. 👍 …
K. F.
We didn't go in the fort, but just walking up on Hadrian's wall was a breathtaking experience. Well worth the drive.
M. H.
Great place tour guide fantastic and you spend as much time need to look around would recommend you take a coat as it does get a bit windy with a slight chill
M. C.
Walked up from Haltwhistle, stopping for lunch in Twice Brewed. Enjoyed imagining how life must have been 1600 years ago. Definitely must have felt like the edge of the world not just the Empire. Thanks to Jane at the N T Cafe for helping us back to our B&B.
R. B.
Nice large fort excavation with lots of good info. Small museum.
G. D.
Stunning,atmospheric,thought-provoking and a little spiritual
S. H.
Very enjoyable.
L. H.
We had a lovely time visiting the fort, the museum and the visitor centre. Staff were really friendly and helpful and took great care maintaining safe social distancing. The fort itself has excellent views across the countryside and informative descriptions to follow. They're is a short up hill walk (a bit steep in places) to the fort from the car park but taken slow is very pleasant. The museum and gift shop is small but excellent. We appreciated that they had a vegan option for ice cream and soya milk for hot drinks. Bathrooms were clean. Overall a really pleasant experience and well worth the visit.
J. T.
A beautiful place on a sunny day. Fascinating historical information. Well worth a visit .
C. H.
Free entry with my national trust membership. Had a nice walk up to the fort, the wall and the small museum. Had a sausage roll and a hot chocolate. Nice stretch of the legs after a long drive. Well worth a visit
D. P.
Have visited a number of times in past years. Always a wonder to see the ruins and wall. For that, I'd give five stars... the three star rating is for the new charges.
There's always been an entry fee. I'm happy to pay the £10 per adult. The place needs to be kept safe for the public. No problem. I do have a problem with also having to pay to park. Since when does a tourist spot charge for both: entry AND parking?! I understand English heritage and national trust need to recoup losses after COVID, but so do we all. Adding charges, no matter how small, is an insult to us paying visitors.
M. M.
Based on the reviews for other Hadrian wall sites, we decided to give Housesteads are full attention. It was completely worth every penny. The site is extremely well preserved and the museum is a reasonable size considering the location. This is complemented well with a visit to the The Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle.
S. K.
Fantastic stretch of Hadrian's Wall, amazing views, picnic benches and a museum.
M. P.
Been there 5 times now surrounded by great walks, simply beautiful!
B. R.
A great place to visit. The car parking is independent of the attraction so you you do need to take that into account when planning your visit.
If you are members of English Heritage or National Trust the visit will be free.
There is a long walk uphill to the museum and fort so not ideal for those that would find this tough.
The reception staff were extremely helpful and enabled us to drive to the museum as my wife is unable to do that walk. This gave us the chance to see the museum, fort and the wall.
The wall itself is not very high but given the steepness of the ground in front of the wall, one can imagine great difficulties for anyone trying to breach it.
The reality of the construction makes it an epic achievement. Well worth a visit
D. H.
So amazing to think people lived here many years ago. they told stories, they laughed, they fought.
G. a. N.
This area is an old Roman ruins. It is a nice day trip to the area of the Borderlands and together to see Hadrian's Wall
R. H.
Dramatic landscapes provide interesting walks, museum to help provide context to the ruins which are interesting to look around.
K. M.
If you get pass this during a journey you can have a look. But I won’t drive all the way there to see it.
J. H.
Beautiful day out walking.
L. W.
Amazing views. Worth the half mile trek up hill to get there.
S.
Well detailed and historical place, lovely little cafe and the museum's really interesting for it's size
K. T.
Unfortunately I got there late so couldn't see the museum, however the sites were amazing. Would recommend to anyone who gets the chance to see the landmark
R. G.
Excellent trip to Roman Hill Fort. Kids loved exploring the ruins and learning about the history. Spectacular views and free entry for National Trust and English Heritage (pay to park). Cafe at top or bottom for a cheeky ice cream on a fine day.
N. N.
This is clearly a site of great historical interest so is worth visiting. Other than the remains of walls of buildings there's not that much to see though. The "museum" is tiny with only a few exhibits.
C.
Wonderful ruins - well looked after by English Heritage and the National Trust. There is a steep hill up to the fort - but there is some disabled parking at the Fort. Once there the path is made of sand / stone and is extremely difficult to push wheelchairs through or for mobility scooters to achieve traction. There are then a large number of steps to get to Hadrian's wall. This does not distract from how amazing the site is however if you have mobility issues this is not really for you. I got to the fort and went round the small museum but even that was difficult due to the nature of the path. Those with me thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The nature of the site and it's historical significance makes disabled access difficult and sometimes you just have to accept this. I still enjoyed my visit.
S. C.
Wasn't sure if we could go to the Fort without pre-booking but it was fine. The views are spectacular and some good open remains of the Roman Fort with information. Its quite a steep approach to the Fort on foot but I think they can assist with transfer if you need it.
J. M.
For someone who isn't a huge fan of ruins, I found this very intriguing. The scenery is particularly breathtaking and there are no boundaries for walkers to wonder off and discover.
J. R.
Excellent historical site, well preserved with highly knowledgeable staff
M. D.
Really a great site. However, after nearly 18months shielding, this was a first outing. The climb nearly killed me! Nothing we read indicated the distance and change in elevation fro. Entrance to first ruins. Glad I made it up, coming down a trial but we made it. I suggest for those with reduced mobility they allow parking near the museum.
C. B.
Pleseantly surprised by the fort, much more to see than was expected.
Very informative boards throughout, but no order for you to go round them in, which was nice, interesting facts about the fort and the soldiers that were stationed there.
Museum was compact but lots of artifacts with in depth descriptions, but not heavy.
There is alot of hills, it is after all on top of one, so be prepared for a 20 minute walk from the car park to the actual fort itself, including a steepish path as well.
Wouldn't really recommend it for young children as I don't think there is enough to keep them engaged
Allow at least 2 hours to enjoy this site to its fullest, don't forget the walk along the wall
Cafe at the car park does a great pasty😁
S. M.
Amazing place. Highly recommend a visit. Roman remains hadrians wall. Fabulous. Good tea and coffee. Very hilly but worth the climb.
R. S.
Interesting history of the wall and fort. Nice views of the surrounding hills.
T. F.
Needed to book in advance to see fort. Walk is beautiful.
G. L.
Very good experience, museum was exceptional and clean as was the Fort even on a day like today with a rainy forecast
D. M. T.
A bit of history and nice museum (small) but interesting ruins!
M. B.
Great experience thoroughly enjoyed it, even managed to engage my 10 & 13 year olds (no mean feat). Shop & Museum OK but not enough to hold kids interest for more than 5 minutes.
J. N. M.
A true slice of ancient Roman history and a monumental feat of civil engineering, where trump failed the Romans did not.
I wall built from the East Coast to the West Coast on Northern England.
The whole area is beautiful and breathing taking scenery!
W. W.
Great if you love your roman history.
M. R.
Amazing location and scenery to feast your eyes over. The museum by the fort is worth spending some time over.
M. (.
I love Roman History so it's hard to go wrong with such a well preserved Roman fort; been here loads of times as a kid but this was the first visit in ages. The museum was pretty small so if you want a good education on Roman frontier life, add another site or two onto your trip. Knowledgeable and helpful member of staff on the gate able to answer questions.
P. D. P.
Fort and Museum are excellent. Many detailed panels on the site.
Museum is small and takes 1 hour to completely read all information.
A nice 1 hour hike from the fort to sycamore gap (robin hood tree) on the military path next to the wall. Some places are steep on this ancient route, the alternate stanegate road or civilian route can be used for hiking.
Site is bit of a walk from car park where the rest rooms are located so use them before hand.
G. R.
You can see the fort, Hadrian's wall and there is a museum. It's the most intact they say in Britain. Everything you want to see about Hadrian's wall you get here.
L. M.
Amazing place to visit. Stunning sites and lots of historical ruins.
C. “.
It's a good uphill walk to the fort from the visitor center but worth it
P. W.
Fort is very interesting and signed throughout to give information on what each area was used as. Hadrian's Wall varies in size throughout and can be a decent walk either way from the Fort, even goes up to approx 100ft high in an area!
V. M.
Beautiful views even on a cold rainy day like today
R. D.
Be nice when it's finished 🤔 " What did the Romans ever do for us " ? . Excellent place to visit, love Hadrians Wall. …
Z. C.
Peaceful setting, owned by national trust but if you walk alongside the fields you will still experience it's splendure without going through national trust. Museum very small nothing to write home about.
D. J.
Make sure you have your boots on as its a bit of a trek uphill from the car park. (Be aware, this is not an English Heritage car park so you will have to pay on exit)
The site is also accessible from the Hadrian's Wall Path as well.
There is a shop and restrooms at the car park and another smaller shop near the site itself.
This is definitely not a wheelchair accessible site as it is on a hill and the site itself is on uneven ground which is accessed by steps. However, if you have reduced capability to manage the trek to the site, if you speak to staff in the main centre they will direct you to a parking area closer to the site.
F. O. t.
Great views... amazing history and top staff thank you for today
D. H.
Great day out fantastic information and exciting treasure for children - wear good shoes
D. M.
Really interesting, great walk
A. D.
If we had the fitness, would have probability walked the whole wall. So fascinating and we just had no idea how great we would feel and how ‘transported back in time’ thoughts we would have.
A must see, especially with kids.
The tour is very engaging, funny, and lots of fun facts to keep you warm from the wind chill ok the hills at Housestead.
I. B.
Brilliant facilities. Good size car park. Pay as you leave. Good for a walk to Sycamore Gap. Always cold and windy as its so exposed.
P. G.
We probably had the best weather, as well. Easy parking short 750m walk and its all there to see.
M. W.
Really cool. There is no map, but there are signs explaining everything. Be aware that you walk on a path through a sheep field so watch it for dung. It is also a bit of a hike from the car park to the site itself. We came on a Tuesday and the visitor center and toilets were closed. Even so, still a great place to see.
P. C.
Beautiful views and fascinating history clearly displayed.
Only complaint is £3 charge for car park. Hardly helps with getting people active if they have to pay to park in remote places. As a NT member it is also disappointing that car parking isn't free for members.
C. (.
Decent historical site, some really awesome views
A. J.
Amazing countryside site, the fort itself is worth seeing, with good information outlining what it was like back when it was functioning. The area around it is well preserved and looked after. The car park just south of the fort is large enough and reasonably priced, costing £3 for the first 3 hours, then £2 on top for every hour following. There are some stunning paths to walk around in the area, with Sycamore Gap being one of the main sights to see apart from the fort. Hadrian's wall path can also be joined here.
K. S.
My wife and I were pleasently surprised with Housesteads. This is a fantastic site that's in great condition. It transports you back in time. Absolutely amazed and will visit again!
J. S.
Really good site with a small but well fitted out museum and extensive remains of the Roman fort attached to Hadrians Wall. A bit of a uphill walk is necessary from the carpark and café to the museum and fort but well worth the effort.
R.
Very expensive to enter the site but because of the height of the old structures, there is not a lot to see. We had a better view of the Fort from below the site. Having said this, there is a lot of history there.
A. T.
Since I discovered Classical Studies @ school & enjoyed many family holidays in the Lake District I have dreamed of visiting Housestead Roman Fort. Fifty years on I realised that ambition & my husband was gracious enough to follow me. Sadly time was against us; there was so much to see & do. The approach to the car park took us past stretches of the wall and vallum, & other forts in the area more to explore another time. The cafe & toilets are at ground level. The museum & Fort are a short but steep climb further up. The Fort is certainly strategically place & afforded spectacular views whichever you looked but somehow I doubt that was a priority of the auxiliaries. Another visit is now required to better explore the ruins & walk along a stretch of the wall. I was not disappointed, Housesteads was all I could have hoped for & more. Enjoy.
A. E.
Lovely walk along the wall. Great little visitor centre with lots of information on the Romans and the fort.
G. P.
A "must see" for Roman history buffs. The fort has great archaeological remains, is in a spectacular location (good base for walks along the Wall), and has a super little museum with engaging information panels. Should be visited alongside Vindolanda and Corbridge Roman town - both relatively nearby. We were staying at the adjacent National Trust house, so each morning we watched the diligent staff preparing the site - including removing sheep poo from the paths (there are a lot of sheep ....). The fort is on a hillside, so not really suitable for people with mobility issues.
I. S.
Really interesting spot, great to walk round and see the fort and the remains of the wall. My son found the latrines the best bit!
C. B.
Great museum, looks small, but fits a great amount of info in - about the right amount to be retainable without boring or overwhelming you. Staff were very friendly and recommended a really nice walk afterwards
B. H.
Fantastic views and fascinating glimpse at 2000 years of history
g. h.
Fantastic Roman fort and Museum with coffe shop selling food as well , parking paid for £3 by card as that is not run by English Heritage.
S. R.
Long walk from the car park with a 3 year old, but once we reached the fort he (and we) had a wonderful time. The views are breathtaking and the walls and fort gave a new perspective to our Roman history. Covid restrictions made it difficult to get into the small museum, and English Heritage Heritage has sadly yet to open up its cafes/restaurants which would have been very welcome at the end of our visit. But at least the dog was allowed on site
S.
Brilliant day in the sunshine with my wife and two boys aged 7 and 4. The fort is approx half a mile from the entrance and involves a relatively steep walk up to it. However the scenery is lovely making the walk enjoyable. We were lucky enough to catch a free guided tour given by Paul, he was excellent and gave a great tour. I would recommend you take a picnic as there are numerous grassed areas to sit on. Saying that it can get very cold on a windy day.
My only criticism, as with all English Heritage and National Trust sites, the gift shops can be extortionate. I wish they would drop their prices, they'd find they'd make more money in the long run. I would have bought a few things for my children had they not been so expensive.
W. W.
Fabulous location although quite steep! Signposted well. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. The walk to Sycamore Gap is well worth it but hard going on parts, even the lower route. However well worth the visit.
C. R.
Wonderful experience for whole family. Staff friendly and helpful and plenty of information to enhance the visit. To actually stand on an almost 2000 year old stretch of the wall did it for me .
L. W.
Loved it.
Super interesting
G. D.
Great place to learn about the history of the wall with the only section of wall officially open for public to walk on. Fort remains were very interesting to explore and our children, 12 and 7, had a great time. Just be aware of car park charges which can be a bit pricey over 3 hours. All in all a great place to visit.
D. M.
We cudnt access our tickets but the lady on duty was very kind took our details and let us in
S. B.
If you love history then it's a great place and if you are in a wheelchair, as long as it's electric, then you can get around
P. G.
Excellent visual experience of ancient Rome in Britain. Fascinating ruins with good information boards and well worth purchasing the the guide book.
A. W.
Very interesting place, wonderful views. Wouldn't recommend for anyone with walking difficulties as a challenging walk to the site.
R. H.
Great place to visit, big walk to the top but worth it, there is an alternative route for please who struggle but you can ask on arrival,
Parking fees apply but the machine does not always work.
Lovely cafe which sells cakes and icecream and light bites
P. S.
Fascinating location. Great to visit, even in the rain! Definitely stop at the museum which explains more of the background and history along with some finds from the site.
P. B.
Excellent place to visit plenty to see and read about roman history and the wall
N. N.
Nights watch lived here and the white walkers destroyed it....and so their watch has ended
L. C.
Love the wall
T. B.
A father & son day out. We had a lovely time, the staff were very helpful, brilliant to wander around and soak up the history. We have been before and will definitely go again.
B. B.
If you visit on a clear day we were told you can see up to 20 miles away when at the top of the fort area. It has beautiful views of the Northumbrian landscape. The visitor centre on arriving is ran by the National Trust, there is a further centre with various displays and historical arifacts, ran by English Heritage, membership of either will get you into both. This is a great example of a Roman fort and is a worthwhile visit for all age groups.
Has to be said it was very busy on a further trip today, almost a conveyor belt of hikers, big groups of people being dropped off by coach, it is perhaps better to go mid-week if you can if you want to experience some quiet
L. P.
Very helpful staff. Fascinating place. Need to be able to walk for about 15 mins uphill to get there but it is by path.
w. 1.
Great place for history, see the fort and the Roman latrines, shame the English Heritage visitor centre toilets were closed.. using a port-a-loo when you pay £10 entry really is disappointing.. !l
D. D.
I loved this place well worth visit and it just breath taking and great place to walk around and see what Roman Housesteads looked like and how they lived, there is two ways to get to the fort itself you can walk from the bottom carpark which is over half mile up 1.4 grade hill, take fluids and prepare for climb which is stone walk way, which I will say is challenging but worth the reward and experience what Romans did on daily bases, or you can drive upto top carpark and walk around museum is small but still worth walk around the views of what Romans would have seen is still same today. Adult tickets cost £10.00 to enter the housesteads but I would recommend doing this so you can see how it was set up. Please go visit there are forts and loads to see along Hadrains wall

Nice place, more expensive than Vindolanda and you have to pay the parking.

Despite quite steep climb from large car park to actual fort, well worth visit. Buy a guide book to gain full insight into how fort used.

We didn't visit the fort but we accessed the path along the wall from here. Lovely walk with amazing views. Staff were very helpful and friendly even though we weren't paying visitors.

Beautiful views and a moderate walk although some steep steps to climb..fab day out. The curried cauliflower and lentil pasty in the cafe was a delight.

A busy but well maintained historic site certainly worth a visit if you're interested in Roman history and of course Hadrian's wall.
A bit of a trek from the car park to the site itself and certainly worth considering for those who may have mobility issues and/or those with very young children. It might be worth contacting either English Heritage or National Trust or check their websites prior to going in case they have help with accessibility to the site?
There is plenty of information on site to help you imagine the daily life of those that once lived and worked there and with a little imagination thrown in you will soon find yourself patrolling the walls!
National Trust run a small shop and museum by the site itself where as English Heritage run the main car park, shop and entrance just off the main road.
Certainly worth a visit either by car or as part of a walk along the wall itself. Beautiful landscape and truly amazing history.

A Roman fort with a great view of Hadrian’s wall which you can even walk.

Very interesting place, worth a visit

Enjoyable place to look round on a pleasant day. Great to be able to walk on and beside handrails wall here too.
Well kept and signed fortress to explore

Enthusiastic knowledgable staff at this interesting herritage site. Enjoyable trek to fort although not for those with unsteady gait( we were informed of an alternative route for those who couldnt walk). Lots of signs for info. Would have liked to have known if more excavation planned. The reason for one star missing is we were hungry and would have enjoyed a wider menu choice, snacks only
P. R.
Very well preserved Roman fort with a very good and informative visitors centre, you will need sturdy boots to get there as the stone pathway was not designed for normal shoes
R. H.
Very interesting location, big hill to walk up but good when you get there

A big Fort, well worth a visit

A really excellent place to visit which is steeped in history! In the height of summer the car park can be a bit of a squeeze! If you are National Trust or English Heritage members then you get into the fort/museum for free. The museum is very interesting, as well as a walk around the ruined fort. You can also walk from there following the wall along to neighbouring forts. Well worth a visit on a day with good weather!

Excellent experience, so lucky to have it in our area.

This was part of our reason for the holiday in Northumberland and we were not disappointed. Glad it was a comfortable day as it is a reasonable climb but well worth the effort. Glad we did and highly recommended and very interesting.

Just THE BEST!! LOVED IT. What a crazy idea...to build a big wall...I have been to Berlin. I have been to Israel.
A mad endeavour..wherever you go!!

This is a site of great historical importance and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It does mean that both National Trust and English Heritage members get in for free. There is a steepish walk to the Fort but the views are spectacular when you get there. Good for bringing the kids as there is history and space to run around but food options are limited so best bring a pack up.

The site is interesting and the staff are informative and knowledgeable. As with many such places the prices for refreshments is a little steep so take plenty of your own with you. Good walking footwear will be advisable as it's a large site and you can walk further along the Roman wall in either direction. Be prepared for the weather as it's an open air site. The museum and gift shops are small and can be crowded.

One of the best preserved Roman forts in Britain. We were walking Hadrian's Wall, and stopped here for a couple of hours which felt very rushed, you could easily spend 4-5 hours I think if you are a history lover like me. The attached museum is small but informative, but I wouldn't like to be in there when it's busy. The gift shop is small but the quality of the selection is excellent, and reasonably priced, we got many gifts for family and friends.
As for the ruins, there are information signs for most buildings, and most have illustrations that help to paint a picture of Roman life at the fort, it's also the best place to see Hadrian's Wall as it has been restored here.
We saw nothing in the way of activities, so younger members of the family will likely get bored quickly, but if you have an interest in Roman History this is one of the best sites to visit.

Great history and beautiful scenery

Well worth the walk. What a fantastic place to visit. Wonderful setting, very helpful friendly staff, great facilities. So much to see and learn about the Romans in the UK.
e. K.
Great opportunity to see ancient(123 A.D.) history up close! There are many informative signs. It is at the top of a hill, so not everybody would be able to walk up. It is worth the walk though! Great scenic views. Good for all ages.

Fantastic place. So big.well looked after and alot of information. If you are disabled and cannot walk 1/2 mile, park in main car park and tell staff, there is a small car park near the fort. But you only have 15 minutes in the main car park before you have to pay £3 for parking.. So be quick we were not as we didn't know and we got caught. The fort is challenging for those with limited mobility as it is up hill, however it is well worth a visit and the effort. Lots to see and imagine.

Having grown up in the north east I am familiar with the Roman wall and its various milecastles and forts. But Housteads is ALWAYS worth a visit.
C. T.
Brilliant new installation, dramatic views, very windy.
L. S.
Nice enough. Interesting day out but not very much to see at all. I might have found it more fun if I didn't have a screaming toddler 😅 I understand that social distancing is happening but I think the museum needs more than one person. As the lady had to monitor numbers coming in and out as well as doing the till …

Visited the fort whilst renting Tows Bank Cottage; also an excellent place!
Visited with young niece and nephew; they both thought the place was fabulous for children, to the point of a small tantrum upon leaving.
Plenty to do and see; we were blessed with good weather too.
Excellent photo opportunities!
History plus a great shop and children's playground; only a small walk on good paths from the entrance to the main centre atop the hill.
We are NT so didn't pay for entry, but even if we did it's well worth the value.
I. R.
A real feel for history here - a Roman camp laid out before you. A museum to give extra details. Easy to reach - only half a mile from the car park.

Excellent facilities before and after tackling Hadrian's wall. Friendly staff, good range of hot and cold snacks. First class

Lying midway along Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads is the most complete example of a Roman fort in Britain, and one of the best-known from the entire Roman Empire. It was built within a decade of AD 122, when work on the Wall began, and was garrisoned by an 800-strong infantry regiment until the end of the 4th century. Excavations have revealed major buildings, defences and the civilian settlement outside its walls.
A taste of the history on the site
THE TUNGRIAN GARRISON
Housesteads was a large fort covering 2.2 hectares, garrisoned by auxiliaries – infantry and cavalry raised from the conquered peoples of the empire. It was intended from the outset to hold an infantry regiment of 800 men, known as a milliary cohort. The cohors I Tungrorum (‘first cohort of Tungrians’) is known to have garrisoned the site from the late 2nd to the 4th centuries AD.
This unit of auxiliaries was originally recruited from German-speaking tribes in the district of Tongres, in modern Belgium. The unit had earlier been stationed at the nearby fort of Vindolanda, south-west of Housesteads: a tombstone from there records the death in battle of a legionary centurion commanding the regiment, probably early in Hadrian’s reign (AD 117–38).[3] The date of the unit’s move to the Wall at Housesteads is not known for certain.
Further evidence for the early presence of the Tungrians derives from two inscriptions. One is a small building stone with the initials of the cohort, used in the lower wall of the granaries – one of the original buildings of the Hadrianic fort, which underwent major rebuilding in AD 205–8.[4]
The second is a dedication by the first cohort of Tungrians to ‘the gods and goddesses’ in accordance with the oracle of Apollo in Claros, now in western Turkey.[5] Ten similar texts known from across the empire have all been associated with the outbreak of plague about AD 165.[6]
Great place to learn about the Romans in Britain, would recommend anyone make a visit

Wonderful piece of history, well organised throughout. The walk up is not for those of a weak disposition and certainly not wheelchair friendly although I believe there is a minibus service available but again the fort itself is not suitable for wheelchairs. Only downside was a miserable member of staff on the museum till (by the fort), very unusual for English Heritage.

I have been here lots of times over the years this time l only went to get my Hadrians wall passport stamped and loo then walk on
S. F.
Loved the extensive ruins uncovered there and the fact you could walk in it. Made it super educational and a bit of a thrill too. Good visit! If you can only visit one fort on Hadrian's wall, this should probably be it. There is a good quantity of exposed remains and the setting is wonderful. The wall extends in both directions for a considerable way,

really enjoyed the walk around this site

An out of the way place to get to but worth it if you like Roman archaeology. Its a half mile trek from the visitor centre so not for the infirm.
H. Z.
An impressive Roman fort on the best section of Hadrain's Wall.
I. J.
If your interested in Roman history then this is a great place to visit. Pretty sure it would be better to go on a sunny day not on a wet October day. But very interesting and would return to walk along the wall on a better day.
A. R.
One of my favourite sites along Hadrian's Wall. The panoramic views are beautiful and the latrines are an interesting sight.

Good historical place shame about the multi coloured structure

Amazing place for a walk in historic area

So far do good, loved the walk up to the site, did not have time on this occasion to pay the £10 and explore but will next time...
Cafe comfortable staff pleasant but limited choice of food

Housteads itself was very interesting and worth visiting. Very frustrated though on the walk up to the fort from the visitor centre. The path is quite narrow and every time we passed someone my husband and myself walked one behind the other to one side of the path. It's a pity there were so many selfish people spreading out right across the path. We were forced off the path onto the grass to avoid people a number of times. Not ideal when the grass is soaking and people are being told to be aware of ticks!
E. C.
Stunning!
A bit isolated in the countryside but well worth a visit!
Tickets are around £8 unless you are a member of the National Trust and there's a big car park in front.
Be prepared for a hike of just 0.5 miles but fairly intense :)

We couldn't have picked a worst day to visit weather wise so we didn't take full advantage of our visit. There is so much history here. The information is easily absorbed and interesting. There is a slightly hilly walk to get to the fort and wall from the car park. It's good paths and the staff are friendly and will explain everything
H.
Wow. We’re so lucky to visit such a historic place in such beautiful setting and walk alongside Hadrian’s wall. Car park (not free) and an ok cafe. You don’t have to pay if you just want a walk but the ruins are so worth seeing
R. M.
Very interesting location. Museum is small but informative. Steep walk uphill from the parking lot; I was breathing heavily once I got to the top but didn't need to stop part way like others. While this gives a view of Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda, close by is much better if you are interested in the Romans in Britain.
