Reviews of Iles Tours (Iles Group Ltd)
S. B.
Alex is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable! We learned an exceptional amount about Roman history as well as the history of the area. He was able to answer all of our questions about Hadrian’s wall and more. Highly recommend him for any tour.

Another fabulous tour with Alex at Iles tours today. A rare opportunity to go up Grey's Monument and learn the history of Northumberland St. Alex is so informative and his enthusiastic delivery brings history to life. Very professional whilst being very amiable. He definitely would gives Dan Snow a run for his money if he was on TV.
A. F.
Loved the tour of Northumberland Street and Greys Monument. Our guide was friendly and very professional. Can't get over how much knowledge he has I could never remember a fraction of it. It was lovely to learn new things about the city I live in. The climb to the top of the Monument was worth it, amazing views all over Newcastle. Brilliant Tour and Guide
Thank you
D. G.
Our History tour of Newcastle with Alex was fantastic. It was a pleasure to deal with Iles Tours from booking to the tour end. The communication prior to the tour start was excellent and gave us clear information about what to expect and where to meet. During the tour Alex was extremely knowledgeable and responded to questions and engaged the audience with stories and lesser known historical facts. This was not a monologue of facts but an engaging stroll through history with a gifted story teller as guide. I look forward to booking another of Alex's tours in future and don't hesitate to recommend Iles Tours.

My wife & I went on Alex's Grey's Monument tour recently, and I went on his Swing Bridge tour on 25th September. We can't speak too highly of both of these. Alex is really friendly and helpful and is amazingly knowledgeable about the history of Newcastle - and is so enthusiastic about it! He has clearly researched his information in great detail and puts it over in a very interesting way. Each tour lasted about an hour and a half, starting with a leisurely walk along the streets around the final destinations, with Alex picking out fascinating buildings, landmarks etc and filling us in on their stories.
The views from the top of Grey's Monument were superb, and Alex was on hand to describe and explain what we were seeing. Unfortunately a few days before the Swing Bridge tour Alex had to email those booked on the tour to apologise that the Port of Tyne authority was, owing to unforeseen circumstances, unable to provide a member of staff to allow us into the control booth and engine room of the bridge. Clearly this was completely outside Alex's control and he gave us the opportunity to cancel for a refund or go ahead with an extended Quayside tour, which three of us accepted: it was certainly worthwhile. We still finished up beside the bridge, so Alex was able to point as much as he could from outside - and after relating its history he showed us photos of the engine room and gave us a full (and fascinating) description of how it (should) work (it's been out of action following the Covid pandemic having been unused for 18 months).
I can't recommend Alex's tours too highly - they certainly exceeded our expectations and were very good value indeed.

Great way for 3 generations of our family to explore Newcastle. Alex has an amazing knowledge of local history and we found out so many interesting stories behind the buildings and places and even got to see the inner workings of the Swing Bridge on our heritage walk.
G. F.
We booked a tour for Greys monument and around, we really liked it. It was a really rainy day but we enjoyed it anyway because of Alex.
He welcomed us with a big smile and shared part of Newcastle's history that we would have ever none! He truly loves what he is doing! It just gives you another point of view of the city!
The top of Greys monument is really beautiful too.
E. D.
Alex took us on a small group on a tour of the Newcastle quayside and inside the Swing Bridge. Great tour as Alex is so knowledgable and informative. Highly recommend to both visitors and locals.
M. H.
Last week had the most enjoyable couple of hours in Newcastle on the Walking Tour learning all about the city, a city I thought I knew well having spent many summers as a child visiting grandparents across the river in Gateshead. My guide Alex has an amazing memory for the historical facts but combines this with those lovely extra fascinating snippets of information you can only glean from someone who knows the city intimately. Thank you Isles Tours for a well organised trip and a great afternoon.
v. j.
We had amazing experience yesterday with Alex , I wanted to climb monument for years and finally did it ! Alex was knowledgeable, funny , organized and very helpful in discovering secret Newcastle (I live here for 17 years and read bits and bobs about local history but had no idea that Northumbria street is almost 6000 years old and other things as well, such as the process of the abolition of the slavery …mind blowing !). Thank you very much for opening the door to Narnia for us and tbh I think it should be more expensive
P. P.
Wonderful tour. Alex was so pleasant to spend the day with. The tours were excellent. His knowledge is expansive. Highly recommend touring with him.
B. S.
We met Alex near the station in Durham. Thought it was strange, but it soon became clear why. The view looks across the city to the hills and Alex used this to give a great history of how the landscape formed and the land was settled as good context for the rest of the tour. All key sites and history was very well covered. Really enjoyed the tour. Thanks
P. B.
An excellent 90 minute tour of part of Newcastle, and Grey's Monument. Alex was a fount of knowledge, who made the tour really interesting! Would definitely recommend Iles Tours 😄
S. H.
Alex was super knowledgeable about the history of Newcastle, and was also able to answer our questions! The gory tour definitely exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to learn about Newcastle from a different perspective. The stories told on the tour will undoubtedly stick with me for a very long time!
A. E.
We booked this for a team building activity as we work in the centre of Newcastle. We're quite a diverse group with varying levels of interest in history, but we all absolutely loved this tour. Alex was really knowledgeable, funny and generous with his time. We all came back energised and wanting to do others. 10/10 experience for everyone.
W. G.
Alex is the very best. One of the best tours I've ever taken. His knowledge of the city and out-of-the-way places/stories made for a wonderful/informative afternoon. Additionally, he is very personable and ensured that all questions were addressed. Book this tour, you will be very glad you did.
J. H.
Alex was an excellent guide. He has an extensive knowledge of the area & history. He graciously answered all of our questions. It was an excellent tour.
Z. H.
My wife and I joined Alex for a "gory" tour of Newcastle. Alex was full of really good information, including some of the gruesome and seedy details that you don't always get on your standard walking tour. Throughout our tour, Alex was always happy to answer questions and provide additional info. Definitely recommended!
S. G.
Just done the 2 hour Durham City History Tour with Alex who is a great guide. Tremendous amount of knowledge! Small group tour at a nice pace is really preferable to the large tours. Definitely recommended. Yea
S. B.
Enjoyed a great two hour historical walking tour of Newcastle upon Tyne on Tuesday 30th August 2022. Alex was a great guide, he kept the pace up and his knowledge of the city was fantastic. We saw things we would never have noticed on our own and really enjoyed the experience
B. P.
The tour was really interesting, even if you're local. The tour guide was very engaging and knowledgeable- thanks for a fab time! And of course going up monument was very fun, despite the rain. A great activity, would and have recommended!
S. T.
Very interesting walking tour of Durham with lots of historical details and local colour. Alex has a great deal of local knowledge. He was also very helpful about rebooking me after I stupidly booked the wrong day
c. c.
Fantastic family tour of the Hadrian wall with Alex who has a deep and accurate knowledge of history and his country. The children loved also their day. A very enthusiastic and nice guide, we all highly recommand him for any visit !
A. V.
We toured Hadrian's Wall with Alex for 3 days. A marvelously wonderful and very educational experience. What made our time there superb was Alex! Highly reommended.
P. S.
Excellent tour (Newcastle Northumberland Street and The monument) very knowledgeable, I learnt new things about places I have walked through hundreds of times. Alex was friendly we ( aged 6-67) really enjoyed the walk
A. S.
Excellent tour of Newcastle and Grey’s Monument. Alex is very knowledgeable and made us feel very safe at the top of the monument. Great experience!
R. R.
Alex, tour guide extraordinaire, was incredible- his depth and breadth of Newcastle knowledge was astonishing; I learned so much and feel I already need to do the tour again. Trust me, you will never view Earl Grey tea the same once you know more about the man himself.
Alex’s passion for his work and for Newcastle is infectious and I found that there was more I wanted to know. Alex is a gem and would make a trip to Newcastle richer, as the city holds so much fascinating history.
Alex could not have been kinder and was so communicative about meeting points and fitted around my plans.
The walking is not strenuous and adds to the experience, but if you have mobility issues, let Alex know and he will accommodate you.
I loved this tour and would heartily recommend to everyone.
M. L.
Karl and Dad, John took the historical walking tour of Newcastle with Alex from Iles Tours on 22/3/22. This was informative, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. Alex is a delight and an actual encyclopaedia of historical knowledge. Granted we were spoilt by luxurious weather but something tells me it would have been just as good in the rain. Thank you Alex for such a memorable day and please keep up the good work.
Could not recommend these tours enough. Please sign up and enjoy.
Karl and John.

Alex was a great guide. We happened to choose the wettest day for a walking tour. We had been waiting to see if it was cancelled or rescheduled but it was still on. Suited us as we came prepared (minus boat as the amount of water running down the roads were amazing, more like rivers). You could tell Alex had a passion for knowledge and loved what he does. Some really interesting facts and a great way to learn and explore a new city. Thank you so much. Highly recommended!
I. P.
Did the Gory Tour with Alex last weekend and he bravely battled the bitterly cold elements to deliver an excellent and well informed tour. We've been regular visitors to Newcastle for the last four years but thought it would be good to learn more about the city's past. Learned so much and it was great fun. Thanks, Alex.
A. K.
Thanks for the mind blowing tour! We did the Gory tour of Newcastle in March and it was very interesting, very informative (although some details we would rather forget #mummies) and Alex was super friendly and knowledgeable about lots of topics. We especially enjoyed the vivid description of the Great Fire in Gateshead!

My husband went on the 2 hour tour of Newcastle starting at Grays monument whilst we were on holiday in Newcastle. He came back buzzing saying it was the best tour he had ever been on. The knowledge Alex knew about the city was phenominal. He could have listened to him all day which is why he is going to book another tour when we go back to this beautiful city. Thank you Alex you made his day.
b. a.
Alex is incredibly knowledgeable- he opened up the city for us, from the Earl Grey monument to the quayside and the castle. His enthusiasm and interest was infectious. Definitely choose Iles Tours over bigger less personable companies
S. L.
My 7 year old and myself recently attended a tour of Grey's Monument and Northumberland Street. We both had a fantastic time and have come away with so much more knowledge and appreciation for our beautiful city.
Alex has a unique ability to deliver information in a way which appeals to children but is also detailed and informative for adults.
Alex was warm and professional throughout and is clearly incredibly knowledgeable in his field. So much was included in under 2 hours and I look forward to attending tours in the future. Highly recommend!
A. R.
Absolutely amazing walking tour with Alex. Very knowledgeable about the history of Newcastle. Alex speaks with full passion and with ease describing the facts. My son and I really liked it. We recommend this tour to all who want to learn about Newcastle's history...
C. W.
We had the pleasure of two tours with Alex during out stay in Newcastle. Both absolutely fantastic, but my 12 year old daughter particularly enjoyed the 'gory' tour!
Alex was very informative and kept the tours interesting from start to finish.
I would wholly recommend Alex and Iles Tours Newcastle!
S. C.
A really great tour! Our tour guide, Alex, was super friendly, and very well informed. Visited Newcastle for the first time, and it was interesting the hear stories about buildings in Newcastle, and see the views from the monument. Would highly recommend.
J. C.
Very interesting tour and great views from the top of the Monument! I highly recommend Alex as a tour guide. Thank you.
R. S.
We thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Newcastle and Alex was so engaging and enthusiastic! It was infectious how passionate he was about our city and we’d definitely return!
S. S.
Myself and wife had city break in Newcastle. First time visitors. Started day one with a Goul Tour with Alex. Found out lots of interesting history and got bearings within city. Alex is extremely knowledgeable and interesting - also helpful with local info. Very enjoyable start to visit. Thanks.

Just been on the Iles spinetingling walking tour in Newcastle ,fabulous way to spend an hour and a half! After meeting our guide Alex at Greys monument we wandered our way down to the Quayside.and back via a different route, all the while being entertained by Alex telling us lots of intriguing stories and facts about weird and wonderful people and buildings along the way. Alex is a very friendly and relaxed tour guide and I must say I was so interested in his stories and facts that time just flew by and I thoroughly enjoyed our time. I would definitely recommend this walking tour, not too strenuous with just a couple of uphill streets .I can't wait to try another of Alex's tours when we return to the area.
K. H.
Alex is a friendly and considerate guide. He has an amazing knowledge of the history of this area. I lived in Newcastle many years ago but Alex taught me quite a lot about the City that I hadn’t known before the tour today. He’s a really enthusiastic and informative guide.
R. H.
Alex is such an enthusiastic and knowledgable tour guide. We are all Newcastle locals but we wanted to learn more about the history of Newcastle and we were all blown away by such a rich and surprising history. Such a lovely way to spend the day and I would highly recommend to visitors and locals.
k.
Absolutely LOVED this Gory tour!! We booked this for my hen night and we absolutely loved it!! Who knew we had so much extra amazingness in our city that we didn’t know?! (Thomas Spence was a dude!) Alex is an incredibly engaging guide and, after his initial apprehension about it being a hen party, that quickly dissipated when we hung on his every word as well as having incredible fun together! 100% recommend for locals and tourists alike 🖤 5/5 🌟
P. K.
Alex is very knowledgeable about the history of Lindisfarne and Bamburgh, and made the trip very interesting and enjoyable.
F. S.
The two tours I have been on where both fantastic! Alex tells everything with great passion and enthusiasm, he is polite and takes time to answer any questions. The knowledge he has about Newcastle is amazing and I've learned so much already. I'll definitely be back for a new tour!
C. M.
Had a fascinating tour with Alex about Old Newcastle. His depth and breadth of knowledge is astounding. There wasn’t a question we asked that he wasn’t able to give us a detailed response to. He covered an incredible range of history: from ancient migrations and climate- related shifts to Roman social and military customs and the Northumbria kingdom. His enthusiasm and depth of knowledge kept us completely engaged for the hour-long tour. Would’ve happily done another hour had we had the time or opportunity.
R. S.
A fantastic two hour walking tour. Even though I was born and bred in Newcastle upon Tyne I learn't somethings that I never knew! Alex is very knowledgeable about the history of my home town city and has a very pleasant demeanour. I would certainly recommend Iles tours.
A. H.
Excellent informative walking tour of Newcastle's quayside. I'm a Newcastle resident, but Alex's knowledge of the City, and the information he shared with us was fascinating. We had access to the engine room and workings of the Swing Bridge and found the whole trip interesting and absorbing, despite the rain.
h. b.
Newcastle Gory Tour - Alex was a great and enthusiastic tour guide! The tour was enjoyable and very informative about the lesser known facts of Newcastle’s history. Would highly recommend this to others!
V. M.
We had a Big Market tour on Friday. Was really interesting and engaging tour. In 1 hour we found out many interesting facts, i would definitely recommend as after tour, Newcastle city looked different for us as we knew stories behind the facades of buildings. Thank you for great experience!
K. R.
We booked a tour with the intent to simply see Hadrian’s Wall. What we got was the most informative historical perspective of Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman rule of the British in that time. Our guide was Alex the owner of Iles Tours and he not only showed us Hadrians Wall but gave us a tour of where the Roman’s built the wall in Newcastle, the fort built in Wallsend and two museum tours with actual Roman artifacts from the time. To the point, he was an absolute encyclopedia of knowledge and perspective on British life and Hadrian’s wall during the first two centuries of England’s history. Yet, at the same time it was very conversational and easy to understand. If anyone wants to see Hadrian’s wall and understand the who, what, when, where and why, then start here. This was worth every pound (dollar) of the cost.
A. M.
Alex is a lovely bloke, so knowledgable and humble. You can really feel the man's passion for the local history of Newcastle. Take a tour with this bloke and you won't regret it - though you may struggle to remember it all! It's a constant barrage of interesting tidbits and anecdotes.
L. H.
We really enjoyed this tour and felt it was great value for money. Alex was very informative and told us lots of information which we weren’t already aware of despite living in Newcastle. Going up Monument was a real highlight.
J. S.
I had a splendid one -to -one 4hr tour with the proprietor Alex Iles. His knowledge of the history of the City is amazing and delivered in a fascinating way. I can recommend the experience .

Another Excellent tour with Alex on Saturday along the Quayside. Despite not being able to go to the Swing Bridge Alex was able to explain
the workings of it. He is very knowledgeable and friendly and would recommend his tours and we would certainly book up on other tours he does. Thank you.
H. W.
Brilliant tour with Alex, down Northumberland street to the monument. Up 164 steps to the top of the monument with my parents (82 +73!) He was so knowledgeable.
Very accommodating making sure everyone could keep up and hear what he was saying.
highly recommended.
M. B.
Attended the tour of Northumberland Street and Grey's Monument with Alex today. The tour was very informative and Alex is a really nice guy too. I haven't participated in any other tours with Iles but certainly interested now in doing some more. Thanks.
K. C.
Took a Grey's Monument tour with Alex this morning, I learnt so much about my wonderful city, Alexis's knowledge is immense! Quite the best morning, entertaining and informative. Going up Grey's Monument is awesome and well worth the 164 steps
T. B.
Alex's tour was great fun and very informative. He covered a long period of history, thoroughly answering questions about specific parts as they came up. The walk is pretty flat and would be suitable for all ages. He made great provisions for coronavirus and delivered the information in a safe manner. Would recommend
S. W.
Alex is one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides I have ever come across. If you need anyone to take you around Newcastle this us the man. I can't say enough good thing about hime or the beautiful City. Its not the biggest City but its probably the cleanest, most friendly people I have come across and the biggest party town.
We will be back and a trip to Tunmouth and a walk along the coast is a must.
Great value for money
C. H.
The day tour a few days ago was beyond excellent. Not only did Alex bring Hadrian’s Wall to life (especially Housesteads and Vindolanda and the rest of the Wall we visited with him), but also his enthusiasm, knowledge and readiness to discuss and debate it all in an open manner (not showing up our ignorance), while accommodating and helping disabled me where he could, was all second to none. Can't recommend him and his guidance highly enough.
M. L.
I enjoyed a wonderful half day tour with Alex. He’s well-researched, provides engaging insights, answers questions, and really brought the history of the city to life. Fun day of history!
L. S.

This is a very informative tour of some key sites in Newcastle's history, taking you through the Ice Ages to the steam engine. The guide is exceptionally well-informed and can go into a lot of detail for educators and historians.
A. M. P.
Alex was a first rate guide and gave us an amazingly accessible and comprehensive tour. I and both my kids (12 and 9) loved our day exploring Hadrian’s Wall and Vindolanda. Our trip to the area was too short but we got masses out of it. Thanks Alex for a brilliant day out.
H. L.
Really informative and interesting local history talk from Haymarket down Northumberland Street, followed by fantastic views from the top of Greys Monument. It is steep and enclosed getting up to the top though and if you don't feel upto it there's no pressure from the guid to climb to the top.
L. B.
Alex's encyclopaedic knowledge and infectious enthusiasm made for an excellent 2 hour walking tour of Durham. Would thoroughly recommend it!

Alex is a fantastic tour guide. Due to the current circumstances I was the only customer which made the tour in Newcastle even more special to me.
His knowledge together with this huge passion about the history of that city is an unbeatable combination. Listening to Alex made me think that Newcastle is one of the most interesting as well as important cities in terms of the past of England.
He did patiently answer all of my questions and when I left I was totally fascinated by what I just learned. When you're looking for a tour guide who loves his job - Alex is the one you're looking for! His services are outstanding - so yes, I highly recommend booking a tour with Alex.

He did patiently answer all of my questions and when I left I was totally fascinated by what I just learned. When you're looking for a tour guide who loves his job - Alex is the one you're looking for! His services are outstanding - so yes, I highly recommend booking a tour with Alex.
What an awesome tour! I enjoyed them immensely. Alex really managed to get me totally interested in this city. Countless times I was amazed at the fascinating stories hidden behind the buildings and monuments.
His passion for Newcastle is unmistakable and totally swept me away. I'm still absolutely blown away and would book a tour with him again at any time.
