Reviews of Clifton Grove Nature Reserve Car Park

Clifton Grove was once an Elm Tree lined walk that was beautiful. Dutch Elm disease infected many trees, and the Nottingham City Council planted the wrong type and incorrectly spaced the replacement trees. The grove looks nothing like it should now. Nottingham Trent University backs on to the tree lined grove. In the past the grass was kept short so a wide walkway was very pleasant, now a worn out pathway is visible. It is still a pleasure to wander here. Look up Peter Pan, the story originally was inspired here. In the 60s and 70s local kids would slide down the banks for fun, wearing out scare-like grooves that looked like bum cracks, the largest one was named the 'Queen's Arse' you can still see the overgrown outlines. Walk down the grove toward the east, then take the lower river walk back along the Trent then up what some call ' cardiac hill' back to the car park you will know why it's called 'cardiac hill'. Also look up the legend of ' Bess of Clifton' sort of Romeo and Juliet story, again set in Clifton Grove. Also have a look at St Mary's Church.

A long time favorite for a long peaceful walk and listen to the birds while the dogs can enjoy the freedom to run.

Clifton Grove Nature Reserve is part of a wider Local Nature Reserve including Clifton Woods & Holme Pit. From here you can do a circular walk which is just under 2 miles (about 4200 steps) along the Grove coming back along the surfaced path next to the River Trent. Clifton Grove was once part of the Clifton Manor, which was purchased by Gervase de Clifton from the de Rodes family in the 13th Century. It was probably planted as an avenue of elm trees by Sir Gervase Clifton, 6th Baronet in the 1690's. It was not public land, but was open to visitors.
