An absolutely fantastic place to visit ! Especially when they are on a steam day. It was very interesting and the volunteers who were here are clearly passionate about keeping such an extremely important piece of history going. The architecture is stunning. Great time was had. Will definitely return.. thank you
C. S.
A little gem of a place, staffed by volunteers. A beautiful Victorian Pumping Station set in small but lovely grounds. Entry is £4 including a very interesting tour. There is a cafe, toilets and children's play area. All staff were polite, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. They hold steam days where the boilers are fired up and you can visit the underground water chamber. Check their events before going.

Interesting place. You learn about pumps... They have a nice cooling pond which have 100s odd carps.
You see the old pumping station back in the day on how they move water around the area and understand how steam power work too.
They have a small cafe onsite when you need a little break from all the new information you learnt from papplewick.

We first bought tickets for the classic cars and with that you get annual pass which lasts a year from signing, so now just book our free tickets online for steam days and show our pass when we get there. Classic motorcycles today, but traction engines, blacksmith, fairground organ and lots more to see including inside the pump house which is amazingly beautiful.. They also have plant sales and a cafe. The volunteers do an amazing job!
There is free entry on Sundays between certain dates when they aren't steaming when you can walk round the grounds and visit the cafe.

A great fun and interesting day out. Lovely people running it, an helped by the 40's theme. Children able to use the fireman's hoses. The extra trip to the reservoir was well worth it. What a fascinating place
m. r.

What a gem. A beautiful working museum ran by passionate volunteers. Go on a steaming day if you can to see the machinery working. Book early as can sell out especially the underground tour. Great value all round and don't forget your camera.
R.
Amazing Victorian engineering and beautiful architecture. Apart from the two operational till today huge beam machines there is a also a collection of other steam engines, mini railway, a pond where model ships are presented - some of them with steam engines, workshops, underground water reservoir and many other attractions. The best it is to visit the place on a steam day when all the machines work.
T. T.
Very good day out, lots to see and learn for the Engineering and architectural enthusiasts, good picking areas model boating lake and cafe.
Will definitely be visiting again.
T. J.
Our first visit to the pumping station but because our tickets give us free entry for 12 months, it won't be our last.
The engine house us beautiful with lots if Victorian decoration and interesting facts about the engines.
The cafe served great bacon cobs very reasonably priced and the band was excellent.
All if the volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable. A great family day out.
A. W.
Great day, fantastic to be back.
So lovely to see so many dressed up in fashion and military uniform of the 40s
Can't wait for the next one!
G. D.
Marvellous Victorian Pumping Station I went on an event weekend this was "steampunk" and before covid "freedom day" the event put safety first and areas were roped off or one way. Lots of stalls and visual delights. Entertainment too. I'd heartily recommend a visit
M. K.
Great to see volunteers maintaining and providing great day out to the public. Everyone was super friendly and informative on a great Bank Holiday day out. Thank you.
W. R.
Interesting place especially in steam, worth a visit and don't miss out on the Reservoir tour too..
S. P.
Craft fair and steam day was a good afternoon out. Tickets give an annual pass. Magnificent steam engines!
C. M.
My son had his wedding here the other week well impressed with the pumping station and would love to see it in steam and running ,also loads to do for kids in the grounds
H.
Great place with friendly volunteers who help to keep the place in such excellent condition. Worth visiting on a steam day to see it all working. Victorian precision engineering at its finest.
a. e.
Well worth a visit, the pumping house built in the Victorian era has a working beam engine. The building has lovely ornamental details.
J. S.
A wonderful place to visit on a dry day. Lots of events now back on throughout the year. Friendly experienced volunteer staff are always eager to help.
A. S.
An interesting visit. The pumping station is amazing and definitey worth a viewing. All run by voluntary staff, so make their day and go and visit.
J. W.
Beautiful, an interesting bit of history. Went to a wedding here, a unique and interesting venue and super friendly and helpful staff
B. B.
Lovely place to visit. Very interesting to see all of the inner workings on the station. There was also a car show when we were visiting.
Would recommend :D
Update 1 year later, back at the car show again! Still very lovely.
R. S.
What a great day. Try and go on a steam day as the engines are running. If your up for the half mile walk go to the underground reservoir tour it's only £3 for adults and kids under 16 go free. Steam days £10 but you get a pass for all events the entire year! We had a great day today thanks to everyone running Papplewick Pumping Station.
S. H.
Pleasant grounds to take a walk around and watch and chat to the volunteers.
It is free to get in the grounds when not in steam.
R. W.
A cathedral to steam powered engineering and water supply innovation. The pumping station is regularly in steam with the original majestic Boulton and Watt steam engines in action. The station has a collection of other engines salvaged and preserved from other works and factories that are lovingly tended and kept in working order by a team of volunteers. The station also has a now disused underground reservoir that was used to supply drinking water to the people of Nottingham.
This is a great place to visit for engineering buffs and families.
G. J.
This is a fantastic place to visit, a remarkable demonstration of Victorian architecture, engineering and style, a veritable cathedral, staffed by a group of volunteers that are really enthusiastic, The really nice man, Dave, that showed us around was very knowledgeable. I fully recommend a visit and we will be returning on a steaming day. Nice little cafe.
M.
Fascinating day out and to make it even better there was a classic car and steam day as well as some lovely steam punk people and good uplifting music.
P.
As you can see from the pictues this is a magnificent heritage site and a testament to hard working and dedicated volunteers.
This really is a must see site and do not miss out on the reservoir tour
A. F.
Not been since I was a kid which was a long time ago ! Whole family really enjoyed it and the trip to the underground reservoir is something everyone should do. Tickets are £10 each for adults but last for a year. Bargain !
J. L.
Really interesting place. Especially fun as it was 1940's weekend. The extra trip to the Victorian underground reservoir.
J. P.
A great place! Very interesting indeed.
Also were able to go underground to the Victorian Reservoir. Incredible high quality architecture, especially when you consider its function, so no one would ever see it!
One criticism, was it really necessary to have a live band there, ruined the whole atmosphere, especially as it was so near the main building. It could even be heard inside over the steam engine.
s. k.
Was a nice day out with plenty to see and do will be going again
D. S.
We went to the craft & vintage fair. It's a beautiful place to visit & a lovely day out
g. m. (.
Another great day out at Papplewick Pumping Station. Last time was Goth Weekend, this time 1940's. Huge and impressive turnout, plus a great pasty from the cafe. The underground Reservoir tour is a must.
N. P.
Some interesting walks nearby
G. B.
Well worth a visit. Highly recommend the steam days when you will see the stream driven pumps running. They don't pump water today but you still see everything working. Very impressive engineering! Also worth seeing the Victorian reservoir.
Lots of volunteers around to tell you all about what you are looking at. Some have been volunteering there for years and it is clear that they love it.
J. R.
Stunning Victorian pumphouse. A must visit especially when in steam. The workmanship is incredible and the site is beautifully maintained by talented volunteers.
T. F.
Friendly, knowledgeable volunteers. Excellently preserved architecture, machinery, and stained glass. Tea shop is very reasonably priced and has a good choice of hot and cold food - I recommend the Special Hot Chocolate, it's got a flake in it! One word of warning, some exhibits are oily so don't lean on too much if you have fancy clothes.
L. G. C.
You should stop for a visit if you are around... It's a interesting and nice place with a great history, almost like a museum. The guide was very kind and helpful too. The people who keep this place alive and clean are volunteers.
C. T.
Great venue, beautiful architecture, friendly staff but very much let down by the so-called "food" available from the cafe. So bring your own food!
A. M.
Amazing building with enthusiastic volunteers.
Well worth a visit, especially when the engines are in steam.
s. F.
Amazing to have this on our door step, £10 per adult but you can return as many times as you like in the same year ..
J. C.
A excellent example of victorian engineering that the whole family can enjoy. Go on a 'steam day' to see the pumps in operation and you won't be disappointed. Make sure you also visit the disused underground reservoir.
G. H.
Excellent steam heritage venue, well worth a visit. Day tickets for steam days allow repeat visits for the next 12 months
S. K.
Steam engines in quaint surroundings and with a cool underground reservoir to visit too.
Papplewick pumping station has large rebuilt steam engines and some period buildings with a small pond. The icing on the vmcake is a cmcisit to the underground reservoir which will cost a little more. However it is an insight into engineering and architecture in a great British countryside location. Be warned that unless kids like giant engines and gawking at old buildings they will likely not be entertained.
Overall a good outing if you live close by And me are interested in steam engines and water reservoirs!
S. B.
Victoria engineering heaven, visited several times over the last few years. A lovely place to visit for a family day out set in a beautiful part of the Nottingham country side. It is a real Must! The pump house is amazingly ornate. A visit to the underground reservoir is fantastic. It is mind blowing what British enginuity in those days accomplished. It made social life today so much easier.
R. G. M. (.
Very interesting place and lovelingly looked after. Friendly staff, well worth a visit. For me, my visit was in conjunction with the steampunk event. Was a fantastic two days! 🎩
C. H.
This is a delightful place, very interesting step back in time and the volunteers that work there are lovely and coudnt be more helpful

Great day out, not expensive and all the volunteers are really
M. H.
A local beautiful temple to water, Victorian design and engineering. A must see
R. M.
Beautiful place, lots of Victorian style, sometimes described as a bit like a cathedral, stained glass and very ornate.
R. A.
Excellent day out. Lots of fun!
M. D.
What an amazing place. So much packed into a little space. Awe inspiring history and something for everyone. Many thanks to the dedicated volunteers.
G. K.
Wow. Everyone just smiled. A must day out for all - Great British ingenuity & craftsmanship in full working order - our heritage. Beautiful buildings, grounds & lake teaming with fish, not forgetting the enormous Watt Boulton engines in steam operation, plus all the other smaller models & contraptions. Themed events & attractions in the garden to boot. Definitely be returning.
S. D.
Great piece of industrial heritage, will visit again
D. W.
Lovely place, we'll worth a visit.
S. H.
A lovely, interesting day! Even got to shovel coal into the boiler 😊
N. M.
Very interesting, historic place especially when in steam.
D. W.
Fascinating place to visit but best on a steaming day if you can.
P. D.
This Victorian pumping station engine and house is a work of art. Go when it's on steam and others activities are on. A visit to the old underground reservoir is also very interesting.
I. J.
Great day out ....well worth a visit
K. H.
Love the history of this place - quite unexpected if you haven't been before. Brilliant to see such fantastic Victorian engineering in action on a steaming day. Fascinating to all ages. Go on a trailer ride to see the underground reservoir and see the hundreds of fish in the lake. Nice cafe and plant shop.
J. C.
It's one of the rare places in the UK that is maintained by passionate people, not a comercial money machine. Well preserved and great value for money
N. S.
Lovely place to walk the dogs or ride the horse. I've not been on a weekend when it's in steam but I've been told it's great.
L. j. B.
Beautiful Victorian building. Ground's are stunning. There's a pond where you can sail miniature boat's and of course there's a steam engine.
A. F.
A great place to visit, it's one of those places you have to visit at least once in your life. How the Victorians built this place is absolutely amazing. £10 adults kids up to 16free YOU can pay abit extra and see the underground reservoir one word WOW it's like a cathedral inside.
K. H.
A wonderful way to spend a day. Have been several times. The 40s weekend is a great day out, history, architecture, fresh air what more could you want. Old fashioned fun. Cafe on site. Please visit the blacksmith if you go. He makes wonderful keepsakes.
M. J.
Dropped in to have a nosey, get an ice cream and use the bathrooms! Success on all fronts. All spic and span.
K. M. (. C. S.
One of our favourite places to visit. Last visit was an event weekend so lots to see and do. Always happy to recommend
J. H.
A great place to visit, young & old alike.
Even better on a steam day with the craft fair tent there too.
Staff very friendly, helpful & knowledgable.
Get your ticket validated & you can return for free for a year.
Very good value for money.
K. D.
Had a fantastic day. The volunteers were very informative and friendly. Made my son's day when one volunteer let him press a button(he hasn't stopped telling us since it happened) Also the people with the model boats and the war time fire engines were very friendly and fantastic with children!
M. H.
Well worth a visit but go when it's a steam day and everything is in operation. The pump house is a fascinating example of Victorian obsession with making a grandiose statement. Free parking over the road. If you pay ten quid your ticket lasts for 12 months and gives you entry to all the steam days. And more importantly it helps this conservation charity which is run by volunteers. The 1940s weekend is our favourite so far.
K. H.
Lovely place. The building is amazing, and the grounds are perfectly tended and really serene too.
c. b.
Well behaved doggies welcome, great staff and the tea room food and service was wonderful. Nice displays and seeing the Watt victorian Pumping engine in steam is a real sight. Highly recommended the small extra charge to visit the underground Reservoir. We'll worth it with a well planned informative guided tour.
J. M.
Incredible day out! Especially as we went when they had the station pumping and a great crafts fair on outside. Hearty food there and some really good tour guides explaining everything that's going on. Wonderful!
J. R.
Beautiful Victorian engineering. Poetry in motion
V. K.
Love it here!
It has everything for dogs, a lake to cool down in on hot days and woods to keeps us in the shade 😎
A. W.
Nice quiet walk around the lake, playarea, small cafe certain days watch when its in full steam, mini steam train & other steam engines.
D. P.
Not open today. Dropped-by to encourage a volunteer working on the boilers. It's an incredible and beautiful place. Go. Support it either by visiting on their splendid open days or by volunteering, or financial gift - no amount is too small. Don't miss this gem.
R. S.
Visited yesterday because it was one of the days when the station is in steam and working. It was brilliant! You can go inside the boiler house and see the boilers working and the steam working all of the machines. Also, you can go inside the pumping house and visit all 3 floors to see how the steam powered , massive machinery works. They have a crafy fair to look around and a little cafe which is fairly priced and a ride on miniature steam train to take the kids on. Our 5 year old son loved it !
T. T.
Very friendly guided tour brilliant lots to see great for families
F. S.
Excellent, no more, no less
T. E.
Great examples of some huge fully working Victorian engineering. We visited on a 1940's event day with many demonstrations and activities pertaining to the period with battle enactments, an aerobatic display, singing (two accomplished singers), people in period costume/uniforms etc. Altogether a very authentic and friendly atmosphere. The grandchildren in their refugee attire loved every minute of the visit. We had to go back the following day!
T. B.
Amazing place. A very enjoyable visit. To see the Pump working was a rare treat nowadays. The history and heritage just goes to prove that with inspiration and hard work anything is achieve able. Car park attendant was pleasent and smiling all day. A lovely sunny day when we visited...made the experience more nicer. A must for enthusiasts who enjoy anything to do with Nottingham....The model boats on the lake were so detailed and the people friendly. They were eager to talk about their little water crafts with knowledge and enthusiasm 😊 a very memorable day out.
M. W.
Beautiful buildings have to be seen to be believed
K. A. M.
We went on a Steam day when classic cars where on display. It's a lovely place to visit if you are in to steam pumps and appreciate old Victorian buildings. There is also a beautiful build underground water reservoir.
G. R.
An amazing venue run by volunteers who have dedicated themselves to maintenance this wonderful example of a carefully renovated Victorian water pumping station. With its "in steam days"and special events, this is one place to put on your ," bucket list" Great days out for all the family not just for Dad.
A. L.
Great attraction with things to suit all ages. The yearly pass for no extra cost makes it great value and on themed weekends means that the place it's packed out so there's a great atmosphere. Theres lots to see and a bit to do. The only downside I've noticed is that some of the staff seem to only talk to old people and for a very long periods of time so younger visitors that have questions and would like to get a better understanding for how everything works and what things are just get ignored which is a real shame.
M. L.
Beatiful High Victorian pumping station. The architecture is a joy on any day, but the Steam days are fantastic.
6.
Particularly for someone interested in engineering, this is a palace dedicated to steam. The architecture, tiling, glass and wrought iron are all spectacular without the two magnificent pumping beam engines. Even the cooling water pond is a work of art. The boiler house still houses all the boilers and the tour of the underground storage reservoir is well worth doing.
S. V.
Very friendly volunteers and great seeing the engines working along with the reservoir trip
J. A.
An amazing piece of Victorian engineering in a stunning setting. Well worth a visit. So glad we have finally made it have been wanting to go for years!
G. B.
Awesome day in one of the most beautiful heritage sites in the UK with the sound and smell of steam and coal, plus a pie and a brew :-)
C. D.
Lovely day out nice grounds to walk in and nice to see the victorian architecture
C. J.
A fabulously ornate Victorian pumping house with real working steam engines. A lovely place for a relaxing visit.
g. s.
If you like big, ornate Victorian engineering this is the place to go. One of the few facilities of its type to actually still run on steam.
A. H.
I visit the Pumping Station every year for their 1940's Weekend, usually held in October. The site is very interesting place to visit but is especially interesting on the 1940's weekend as all the steam powered exhibits are fully working the underground reservoir tours are open and there is a great atmosphere with the 1940 displays and reenactors filling the site. The entrance fee gives you access to the site for a full 12 months.
K. C.
Very impressive , first visit for the steampunk weekend. Definitely be coming again. Lovely place
G. S.
Lovely day out
M. F.
What a wonderful little gem of a place! Beautifully maintained by the wonderful volunteers. I was a bit sceptical before going and didn't thing they'd be enough to keep the kids entertained but there was plenty to see and do and we all enjoyed our visit!
To all the staff, keep up the wonderful work you do! 👍🏼
K. S.
Amazing place, very historic and excellent place to visit. We were there for a wedding and absolutely loved the ambience for everything on the day. Would love to see it operational which apparently happens a few times a year. Worth a visit and beautiful grounds to explore including a lake with ducks :)
g. b.
Lovely day out. Engine was in steam, classic cars. The extra admission charge to go to the underground resevoir was well worth doing. Can't wait to go again.
A. M.
Interesting and friendly. 1940s theme when we visited. Check their website and find an "In Steam" day when the engines are running and the old reservoir is open for tours.
M. B.
Visited on WW1 Weekend 2016 - great shows and lovely grounds, the pump was in steam and staff told us lots about it.
The café is cheap but serves some lovely cake and tea. The actual pump house is also quite ornately decorated inside and out as the Victorians were very proud of it.
There was lots to see and we spent a whole day (about 6 hours not including driving time) after a relaxing walk around the pond, where model boats were being sailed, including a quite hilarious duck with an alligator following!
Overall, I would recommend to come and see this on one of the steaming weekends - it's not something to miss as one of the three remaining working steam pumping stations in the UK.
N. S.
A must visit historic location for steam enthusiasts. Papplewick pumping station is a Victorian masterpiece of engineering and construction. It is a towns water pumping station that in the day supplied water through to Nottingham. Today it is a museum that has a lot to offer, there are live steam days days when the pump is fully in service, the steam boilers being fired to supply the steam to drive the pumps. There is a huge underground lake that can be visited on special days. I have also enjoyed Timeline Events photography (timelineevents.org) days out at Papplewick which I would thoroughly recommend to any keen photographer.
N. D.
A stunning example of Victorian engineering brought back to life. Not to expensive to visit but the cafe was expensive for what they were selling. A great day out and well worth a visit.
J. B.
It was the 1940s event.A good atmosphere.
S. w.
Great place to visit for those who have an interest in Victorian engineering, yesteryear splendour, architecture, natural beauty and great value for money , great local gem ! Also recommend the cavernous reservoir tours ! Give this place your patronage , it's fab !
G. H.
Lovely to see this wonderful beam engine operating in all its Victorian finery. A credit to the volunteers who give up their valuable time to keep this working. Well worth a visit.

A must see for any steam power or victorian engineering enthusiast, beautiful restored beam engine and ornate victorian pumping house, can be seen working on steam days (highly recommended ), also for a small extra charge visit the underground reservoir.
C. T.
Wonderful place to see the splendor of victorian engineering. Even if you are not into engineering go and see the lovely victorian architecture and stained glass. Best to go on one of the steaming days.
V. B.
Papplewick is an amazing place to visit, especially when they have a steam day and all the machinery is actually working. The people who work there are very friendly and welcoming. If you want a trip out this is the place to go.
C. M.
We love this place. Its worth coming on a bank holiday, as that is when the victorian steam pumping station is actually working 'in steam'. The underground reservoir just up the hill is well worth paying the extra £2 for.
L. W.
An absolutely amazing place to visit especially when the engine is in steam. A beautiful building in lovely grounds. The underground reservoir is a spectacle.
s. o.
If your local and like steam this is the place for you and on in steam days its amazing and the kids will love it and if the trip is on its well worth taking a trip around the water systern it's astounding what the victorians built where no one can see it.
G. B.
Good day out for enthuiasts and the family. Many events throughout the year with different stalls and exhibits. Admission is also a gift aid so you pay once and get admission for the year.

What a place. Well worth the trip to see it - especially when they have everything going and working (About 6 weekends a year). Some fantastic things to see and watching everything in motion makes it!
K. W.
Victorian engineering at its finest & to see a Boulton & Watt engine in steam is always awesome! Although volunteer run, very understanding & helpful & when things went wrong through none of our faults really, they bent over backwards to help!
M. S.
Very interesting and a brilliant day out!

Brilliant day at Papplewick 1940's Event everybody made such a effort with costumes cars military equipement etc Winston Churchill lookalike was very good did a double take when i saw him , stalls selling bits and bobs, vintage clothing, food hot and cold drinks at reasonable prices absolutely brilliant battle inactment over the lake with Germans & Allied Forces good enternment for kids and adults alike all in all a absolutely brilliant way to pass a sunny Sunday away and your ticket entitles you to return to the Pumping Station as many times as you like within a year good value or what 5 out of 5 from me
S. H.
It is wonderful to see Papplewick Pumping Station in full steam. Such a historic place. It is especially great to visit on event days such as the 1940s event.
R. G.
Attended the Steampunk festival on 13/07/19. A cracking day out,
well organised parking, refreshments very reasonable, as is the admission of £10.00 on steaming days giving free entry all year.
Of course the stars were the engines and the steampunks.
I must especially mention Boggarts Breakfast who were the surprise star turn. (Surprise as we knew nothing about them). If you're not a steampunk, especially if you're not a steampunk go next year, don't miss it, you'll have a great time and support a great local institution that should be cherished.
a. s.
Visited the 1940's event which was excellent, the pumping station is fantastic to look at inside, especially when in steam, also the underground resivoir tour is unique!
M. J. S.
Lovely place, full of living history, the model boating lake is brilliant to just sit and relax by, the model boats are an extra bonus and the people are so friendly.

Went for a steam punk market. The pumping station was wonderful and the people working there were too. Would recommend going.
