Reviews of Merlin's Cave
I. J.
Beautiful spot. Crystal Blue waters and interesting rock formations. Well worth a visit.
The staircase is closed at the moment which is unfortunate. However, there is a climb down on the right hand side which is accessible at low tide.
Please be advised, this is not an easy climb and you have to scramble on the rocks on the beach. Beware not to get caught out by the tide as well - we were in the cave a little too long and ended up getting wet scrambling on the rocks back up.
B. W.
Merlins cave was great to see its free to access and Is in a beautiful cove with crystal clear water.
The cave itself is impressive, accessed from the beach and you enter a big cavern which has an exit at the back through water.
The only downside is access is very steep from Tintagel so you need to be fairly fit and well but it’s very worth it!
M. H.
Incredible amazing views such beauty.
And also mysterious love every minute of it. We went to explore on a week day when it was quiter much better. Filled with lots of history. ❤️
Just make sure you visit inside the cave before the tide comes to stop you in your tracks.
I did wear my converse footwear it was fine on the steps and the hill I climbed up but if you want to adventure through the caves wear decent footwear of course lol.
We bought our tickets online saved abit of mieny as well by buying online. No queing was needed as was a Friday no kids. Less people
K. P.
Great beauty spot . Well worth visit and walk up/down the hill . Great selection of food/ drink and of course Cornish ice cream and not to forget fresh Cornish pastries from bakery , all that in village just 500 meters away.
T. S.
Before I start, please note this is not wheelchair accessible, in fact I would stress it's a climb, and involves navigating boulders and rocks to get to and from steep steps.
From Tintagel, go past the Castle and keep going downhill... And keep going... And keep going...
You will see the cove from the hill, and to your left are steep steps leading down to a pile of rocks that you need to navigate before you get to the beach.
Small and rocky, with a few caves to explore, it's very pretty.
Take water and an energy bar is my top tip, because that downhill walk there means an uphill return journey.
It does get busy, so to enjoy the beach when it is less busy, go really early.
No nearby parking, so you need to park in the village and hike from there.
Phew!
R. R.
Beautiful place. Free access to cave and beach, you don't need tickets to visit this part of Castle. Quiet a steep walk down from village, however there is a option of land rover shuttle. Ample car parking spaces.
T. C.
We visted merlins cave and loved them. The whole family explored the caves and got wet feet. We walked all the way down the steps from the ruins, but caved and got a Land Rover back to the top! Best money I’ve ever spent I couldn’t imagine dragging the kids all the way back to the top!

For those visiting the nearby Tintagel Castle, the natural beauty of Merlin’s Cave offers an invaluable, and free, extension to visitors keen on exploring the magical and historical legacy of King Arthur.
Sequestered at the foot of the cliffs on which the ruins of the castle sit, the cave can be accessed via a long and meandering path that presents a rewarding, but challenging, stroll.
Since it’s important to remember the return journey while descending to the cave mouth, I would recommend those with limited mobility to consider the use of the paid shuttle service provided by the trust.
Once inside the cave, the atmosphere changes into something magical and breathtaking - something that proves truly worth its name. The views of the water through the beams of sunlight entering the cave through its mouth and the occasional crack in the rocks are unparalleled and sit at a stark natural contrast to the man-made structures of Tintagel. Exploring Merlin’s Cave offers something similar to the experience of exploring Tintagel in that they are historically and thematically linked, yet at the same time offers something unique that wandering the walls of the castle does not.
One of the main downsides to Merlin’s Cave is that the environment outside the entranceway is undisturbed, except by the slow erosion foot traffic. Visitors may find that the rocks that sprawl across the sandy beach area are slippery as a consequence of the waxing and waning tides - as well as becoming completely submerged during high tide.
Unlike the castle site at Tintagel, there are no man-made paths through the cave, plaques, or tourist-friendly areas. For some, being able to engage with a purely natural and historical site without the often sterile intervention of trusts and organizations may be refreshing. However, there are some that may find the environment inaccessible and unforgiving. It’s well worth considering one’s own ability to navigate the cave before making the lengthy descent.
e. s.
very scenic:) very steep hill down to the cave (English heritage does offer a £1.80 ride down and £2 ride up) but it is walkable. Would recommend get there an hour earlier than low tide as it gets VERY busy at the exact time (the stairs down can get quite congested) but beautiful + magical!!
B. A.
It’s along with Tintagel castle 🏰 spend good time and had fun to take pics with King 👑 Arthur statue 🥰
N. D.
Probably the most spectacular scenery that I've ever seen
A. V.
Maybe it was bad timing but I was not impressed. It was nice but not great or wow. Nice little waterfall. Would not go for a swimming either as very overlooked from all sides.
G.
Stunning attraction. Beautiful clear waters which you can swim in. Very clean and well kept up.
An iconic place to visit any time of the year.
The views are amazing and breathtaking.
T. T.
Excellent little beach area, caves a nice touch for exploring. Fantastic for dog walkers first thing in the day as they can go wild. The last step down on to the rocks is quite a big one but at least there is a walk way down with steps rather than all rocks at other beaches. Always visit every morning we are in the area as it does tire the dogs out for the day.
I.
Lovely cave on the small beach below the castle. Leads right through the headland, though how far you can get will depend on the tides. Just adds to the air of mystery built up around the whole Tintagel site. Great to visit with a lovely waterfall on the small shingly beach. Accessible via some steps that get more rickety towards the bottom then a bit of a scramble over some boulders. Worth a visit if you are able.
C. L.
Beautiful, absolutely stunning! It's a tough walk, we went the scenic route which was amazing but hard on the old legs. The beach was beautiful Crystal clear and the children/family loved it. There is a waterfall which was spectacular!
m. n.
Merlin's Cave is just below the Tintagel castle, and it was an absolute adventure exploring the caves along with the waterfall that flows on the beach. The famous Merlin's face is carved onto the wall near the entrance of one of the big caves, and is quite hidden, almost quite…
T. C.
Great attraction to see. It is free although English Heritage run the site walking down to the caves is free. There are toilets and a shop at the bottom of the hill. Although you don't need to pay to see this you might feel disappointed if you don't pay to view the castle ruins on the island above just to cross the new bridge.
A. J.
We went on a windy sunny day amazing
A. G.
Beautiful little cove. Cute beach area but quite small. Great for exploring and brilliant for dogs. My son found a few minerals on the beach.
S. T.
Beautiful beach and cafe area near Tintagel. Was lucky to have a lovely day to explore the caves as cove. See if you can find Merlin’s face amongst the rocks when you’re there!
F.
Worth the walk and steps down. Boys loved the cave. We even saw white bats. (Seagulls) magical waterfall.
I. B.
Fantastic views of the cave can be seen from the path below the castle, you can explore it at low tide, we walked down from St Materiana's Church, along the cliff & down.
T. G.
Walking down to the beach, under Tintagel castle you can find Merlin's Cave. There's a beautiful waterfall coming to the sea and a store that you can buy gifts and coffee
F. M.
Not easy walk down to the castle and the cave but it worth. there is an option for shuttle on a land rover for who is not keen to walk
C. H.
Great natural feature. it is quite a hike going back up to Tintagel , but a great workout!
r. j. r.
Check the tide. Well worth the climb. Great
sandy bay, ideal for kids and dogs. The cave
is a 'proper cave', and with a hole at the end!
D. L.
Absolutely amazing and beautiful. You can see why king Arthur chose this place!!!!
M. H.
Interesting sea cave that goes the whole way through the peninsula. The cave is on the beach and easy to get to from the steps to the castle, as long as it is low tide. Once the tide is in the beach is underwater so you can only get to the cave by swimming or kayak.
F. D. J. M.
Wonderful place, one can feel the weight of history. There is special feeling here - some people speak of "thin" places.
E.
Part in parcel for Tintagel Castle really. Steps lead down to a cove and the cave itself. Interesting little area to explore but nothing particularly of interest there outside of the two above. Sadly the natural beauty has been eroded by carving 'Merlin's face' into the cliffside (obviously draw your own opinion of that on visiting, but on a personal level I preferred it before). Overall worth a visit at least once.
A. B.
A great place to visit stunning views but have your walking shoes on and be prepared take water on a hot day..
H. C.
Impressive scenic of surrounding rocks. An outstanding natural beauty spot. When at low tide you could walk to other side of cave.
B. W.
Beautiful cave, the whole castle has a great historical atmosphere where you can let your imagination run wild. Steps lead down to the cove.
e. j.
Great place to visit where you are in the centre of the Arthurian legend. Be prepared for the quite challenging treck down to the beach above which stands Tintagel Castle perched on the cliff above. Be sure to check on tide times as the cave does flood at high tide.
Z. G.
If your visiting Tintagel, must go down the steps to see Merlin's cave. We enjoyed the calm of the cave followed by the drumming of visitors.
B. D. S.
Beautiful work of God... This place cannot be described with words. There are more than 1 cave and everyone can find something interesting to do. The beach is small and the waves are refreshing. Lots of space for picnic or relaxing while watching the view, you can visit The Tintangel Castle but make sure you buy your tickets well in advance as it is always crowded and difficult to get your tickets on last minute, The King Arthur statue is eye-capturing and some castle ruins. Drink and snacks are available around there, also the are some cars to get down and up the hill for which you have to pay less than £2.
M. C.
Lovely little cove, and beach, best visited at low tide.
C. Y.
Worth the walk. You can only access it during certain times though, so be mindful.
S. S.
Beautiful it's not a word to describe... Memorable place with an amazing view. There is more than 1 cave and everyone can find something interesting to do. The beach is small and the waves are refreshing. Lots of space for picnic or relaxing while watching the view and if you're lucky enough to get some tickets, you can visit The Tintangel Castle as well, where is the Gallos statue and some castle ruins. Drink and snacks are available around there, also the are some cars to get down and up the hill.
M.
Scenic and really interesting place to go. If you're looking for a place to take your first photographic shoots this is probably the spot. You have a wide range of angles you can use and during sun rise and/or sun set this place is pretty magical.
M. B.
Stunning cove and great to explore the cave. Only after we visited that we found out about Merlin's carving in the rocks so will have to revisit. Watch the tide times as cave is only accessible on a lowish tide and access to the beach is a little tricky. Well worth a visit.
M. a. J. B.
An outstanding place of natural beauty. The cave is at the base of the cliff, access dependant on tides, but well worthwhile walking down to if you can. The whole place is steeped in actual & mythical history and is a magical & atmospheric place to spend time at. The colours in the sea and the sunsets are incredible on clear days. Recommended to visit !
d. L.
Beautiful place to visit. We'll worth the trek down to the beach. Was lucky to visit when it was low tide so was able to explore the caves. Dog friendly beach also.
C. B.
REALLY COOL CAVE AT THE BASE OF TINTAGEL. BIT OF WALK DOWN TO THE BEACH, BUT THE COVE AND BEACH ARE GREAT.
S. N.
Fantastic views
B.
What a brilliant place to chill, bit of a steep path to reach beach for those not into walking much! Even though you can reach the beach/cave from various paths..i like the coastal one, great scenery..just watch your footing in parts!
All in all..great views, and a great place for an early evening walk in the summer..
I. 9.
Sadly the tide was in when we got there and, by chance a few people had to be rescued by the RNLI as they got cut off on a remote beach when the tide came in and they couldn't swim - very embarrassing for them.
That said, despite not getting to see inside thr cave the scenery was beautiful and the plave was well kept and clean.
Plan to do this and the castle on the same visit but you have to book the castle in advance.
D. P.
Free to visit. Dog-friendly, as long as they can negotiate steps. Amazing views of coastline. Can incorporate walk along coastal path to Nissan s Nose. Thoroughly recommend.
D. B. B.
This place is such a beautiful part of the coast with many caves, coastal path, waterfall and a lot of history. It is worth going to spend the day here. Lots to do. 100% recommended
M. M.
Great historical place, beautiful views and walks!
M. D. M.
Part of the Tintagel castle. The legend of King Arthur and Merlin Wizard as in a movie.
A. R. C.
Most beautiful place you will see in England! Worth the hilly walk! Me and my boyfriend got out our comfort zones and cloned down a cliff to swim in the beautiful blue ocean 😍 something you must! Experience
l. g.
Really nice place to go. Steps were a bit steep for my 8 year old, he made it over the bridge but couldn't go any further as he was scarred of the hight. When you make the top the views are spectacular.
P. R.
A bit of a walk down but worth it.
Y. B.
Lovely place but the reviews should tell the truth about the steps as after the long steep walk and all the way down the steps only to find there is no bottom step.
It's a big jump down onto some rocks which myself and my daughter couldn't manage so it was waste of time.
A. c.
A cool breeze blows through the cave. Nice after he hot climb up and down a million steep steps.
D. G.
The cave is a small part of a much larger attraction. Tintagel is a stunning monument to Arthurian legend. The ruins are substantial and require a lot of walking over hilly and rough grounds. The effort is worth it. The cave can be seen from the walkway and we spent time watching the interaction between the waves and the cave.
M. M.
A cave that can be explored at low tide. The beach and cave can be reached by walking down a staircase. The beach itself is rather pretty and a nice place to enjoy. The cave is fairly rugged but easy enough to explore, it pretty huge height wise.
A. G.
Rugged, beautiful, stunning. The place really does have a magical and calming aura. My partner and I spent a good few hours here with the children on our way back to Devon from Cornwall. Well worth a visit!
J. A.
Great little beach bit tricky to get down to & steep coming back up so wear sensible shoes & to get on get to the beach you have to climb over some rocks so not the easiest for the young or the old. Worth a visit.
p. s.
It's a nice place to visit, but only if your fit.
There is an exhibition & a cafe(which was shut on the day we went) at the bottom of the hill.
I'm told there's a Landrover that does the steep hill if your not up to it, but it wasn't running on the day we went.
Plus Tintagel Castle is closed at the moment while they build a new bridge.
T. M.
Nice place, there is a lot of walking so if your not up for being out of breath this may not be the place. Overall was amazing though really worth the heavy breathing lol 😆
M. H.
Long walk down hill to the cove with fantastic views, at the bottom is a beautiful cave, waterfall & resident seal. You can also get a Landrover (fee)up & down for those of us that ate all the pies or have a disability. If you take the cliff walk you will be charged (£8-50 I think) to go explore the ruins of King Arthur's castle or you can not pay to go in & walk along the cliffs. Small tourist centre (at the bottom) which sells all sorts of stuff, from ice creams to replica swords & armour. Well worth a visit.
D. W.
In all honesty, walking around and seeing this gorgeous natural splendor was worth all the money in the world. The walking and climbing can be difficult, but in all weather conditions, this place is so gorgeous. I wish I could live in this cave.
J. W.
Lovely during the summer months and the water is amazing for a dip or swim def recommend
C. D. F.
Go visit this place you will not be disappointed thank me later!
B. M.
Typical British touristy stuff. Loved it. Good clean air, plenty of parking (with small fee). Good toilets and food at the visitors centre and a big climb up the hill (smaller one down to the beach).
F. K.
Really glad we got there with the tide low enough to explore. Steps down a little unnerving while supporting a toddler. Lovely place to play
M. D.
Beautiful. Even the new bridge doesn't spoil it!
R. D.
If you time the tides correctly, it's a beautiful little beach with awesome cave. Obviously the castle should be the main priority for visiting this place, but Merlin's cave is a added bonus
F. H.
Check tide time before going. No need to pay for castle, just follow signs down. If you have wet "jelly" shoes, wear them as the beach is stoney, but great waves and stone throwing into sea. Lovely walks around there too, though use sensible shoes. Castle is slot of steps
G. R.
Tintagel is full of beauty but this place is a must if your in the area, be sure to check the tide times and visit when it’s low so you can get down to beach and explore the caves
n. g.
Nothing else can be better than this cave...a cave on one side, sea the other side, a mountain, waterfalls...all in one place
K. R.
Absolutely incredible views and beautiful surroundings
S. S.
Amazing place. The cave is relatively small and only accessible when the tide is right. Nonetheless it is remarkable and the surrounding beach is really nice too. The views are amazing.
j.
Can't wait to visit when the sea is calm and the tide is out. 100% recommend this place
K. M.
Wonderful place. I recommend
L. B.
Look like I was in Merlin kitchen 🤣🤣🤣
D. S.
Lovely place to go with the family. Great views and great for photos. Great English heritage place. A few steep steps, but well worth it.
K.
Beautiful went down early before 10 so not many people definitely impressive
S. L.
A must see if you are visiting Tintagel , if the tide is out, go for it you won't be disappointed, there is a waterfall on the beach, I love this place, you can let the kids run, I can spend hours here
K. D.
This is a very nice place if you don't mind walking and climbing hills. The views are well worth it though
M. W.
Stunning cave with a fascinating story.
F. R.
Wow this beach is beautiful
S. K.
Tricky to get down to but once you're there, so worth it!!! Absolutely stunning
R. B.
Worth the walk down to the beach and a look in the cave. Nice pub at the top of the hill with a beer garden with lovely views.
T. J.
Access down to the caves was not permitted due to damage to the steps however the view from the walkway was still impressive.
S. A.
Loved every moment. Very historical. Extremely touching. Fabulous views. Very Natural. Lots of walking involved.
B.
Nice cave, could walk all the way through
P. B.
Be there at the right time as tide comes and goes.steep Hill down harder coming back up bit you can take a ride up in land-rover for around £2.50
P. L.
Well worth the trek down and is free. Enjoyed this way more than the castle. Make sure you go low tide.
S. S.
Great little caves. Can be quite dark and the steps down may put people off but definitely worth it, just watch for the tides
C. H.
Was a very cool cave, but I enjoy that kind of stuff so your mileage will vary.
N. W.
Full of atmosphere and history, be mindful of the opening times for the Castle and the tide times.
J. T.
A pretty amazing natural formation
E. H.
Amazing for climbers and adventurous ones. Be prepared for a LOT of stairs and amazing views.
J. H.
We had a very good time at marlins cave ,but getting to it is a problem at the bottom of the stars needs fixing if you are bad on your feet it's a big problem slipry rocks .
A.
Awesome place . Look for the carving of Merlin in the cliff face at the entrance to the cave
L. S.
It was filling rapidly with water due to the incoming tide, so didn't actually get to go in.
D. t. S.
Nice view from those high cliffs, it's totally worth travelling there.
P. F. (.
Nice place, but it stinks a bit.
A. R.
A beautiful place
F. D.
Stunning views, fascinating ruins
S. B.
Crucial to visit when tide is out - amazing place and fascinating to look for the old mine entrances nearby.
T.
There isn't alot to see except for a few ruins and the lovely view. I would personally reccommend it
C. M.
Nice scenic ocean view with caves.
V. M.
Dramatic and romantic nature sightseeing
G. G.
Extremely beautiful. Could you imagine if there were no tourists?
O.
Amazing views. Some walking required, but totally worth it
T. T.
Unfortunately because of the last storm the stairs where washed away...so the cave could be seen only from above, no acces to the cave
M. J.
Lovely little hidden cave with waterfall next to it
D. B.
Really cool cave, but bring a flash light and watch out for the tides!
G. S.

Merlin's Cave is below the ruins of Tintagel. The cave where the magician Merlin is said to live is one of the most beautiful sights of glorious Tintagel. The cave can only be reached at low tide. The rugged cliffs and the waterfalls give the place something magical. You can vividly imagine all sorts of mythical creatures, knights of the Grail, magicians and bulging treasure chests.
F. F.
(Translated) Beautiful, half day between climbs and descents, steps and stairways, overhangs and breathtaking views. Tintagel, a small village just above the ruins where you park your car, is also really nice. I recommend with children always hand in hand.
(Original)

(Translated) A cave made famous only by myth, nothing particular. Suggestive, but getting wet to enter is not worth the effort, if there is low tide then it's fine
(Original)

Merlins Cave can and should only be visited at low tide (if necessary, ask the Castle staff about the walking times)
A stairway, partly made of stone, wood and metal, leads to the bay of Tintagel.
The lower landing is a bit difficult to manage because the stones are broken away. Not for a stroller or people with disabilities!
The cave is on the left in the bay. It is easy to walk on sandy soil. Only in the last third does the ground change into very slippery stones.

If you want to visit this cave in Tintagel Rock, you cannot do it at any time: you have to be guided by the tides, as the cave is submerged at high tide. In combination with a visit to the often windy Tintagel Rock you can easily spend 2 hours there.

(Translated) Merlin the Wise,
Merlin, whose own knowledge became the cause of his downfall. Therefore, do not abuse the spiritual and physical gifts that have been assigned to you, so that they become the cause of your own downfall.
You will in no way be excused because in the course of Life you meet many who, like Merlin the Wise, have been given many talents, which they can easily use to great advantage for the good of mankind, but which they misuse and thus overthrow themselves into depravity and harm other people. Should it be found that you are weak or misuse your talents to the detriment of others, your mistake will not be the less because someone else has caused greater harm.
While I don't think Merlin intentionally hurt anyone, his skill did just as much damage out of foolishness, as if he had planned it.
It is indeed difficult to say whether it is the wickedness or the folly of men that does the greatest harm in the world.
Therefore be on your guard, not only against sin, but also against folly and weakness.

lebe mein lebenslang in diesen Dogmen...

Merlin Cave ...or Merlin's Grotto or my home.....
First to the place itself...you couldn't describe it better than the other visitors...impressive place..
Accessible with a little effort..
Even more impressive at high tide.
I use this place to write a review about myself..so that the people who follow my reviews can form their own opinion about me.
I have been working in gastronomy for over 30 years....whether as a star or event chef, whether as a trainer, ice chisel or sugar master..
Got the word service provider in my blood and experienced all kinds of society's appreciation for it.
I myself have exactly two sides...
live my life in these dogmas...
Black or white...good or evil...merciful or merciless.
King Arthur once asked his Knights of the Round Table: "What is the highest of all virtues?"
there were many answers...
but his magician gave the only right answer: "TRUTH !"
And I can truly say this for myself, apart from one or two big lies that I deliberately told in the face of my enemies or so-called friends, I mercilessly tell the truth, because the truth is the cruelest weapon if you know how to use it.
So make your own judgment about me....
here at google i'm the narrator of a story, i'm mainly active on google maps as an evaluator...

(Translated) 5 stars because the place is very impressive. Perfect as an epilogue to the visit to the castle. the cave can be reached without too much difficulty from the stones next to the waterfall (just pay attention to the more slippery ones): unfortunately the old path that came from above has collapsed and hasn't been rebuilt anymore.
As legend has it, the cave fills with water during the tide while when this is low you can reach the other beach by taking off only your shoes. If it is reached by thinking about the cartoon of the Sword of the Rock, the effect is assured.

A unique experience.
After we had lingered in the cave for a while, I ceremonialized something and oscillated a stone with my amulet. I don't want to go into detail here.
After searching and looking at the nature of the stone, we found that a skull or head with shoulders is recognizable.
Maybe you can see this too.

(Translated) This cave can only be reached at low tide, via the long steep stairs from Tintagel Castle ruins.
And when you finally get down you feel the ancient myths and legends alive. You can walk all the way through the cave to the other side. And leave your imagination free to let your own story float around. The round boulders worn by the seawater are beautiful in color, because they are still wet from the receding water. Don't stay too long in this Magical place, for you still have many high tiring steps to climb and the tide may rise again and swallow the cave with its mighty waves splashing on the rocks.

(Translated) This place is of supreme beauty, not only because it smells of legend but also for its position, more unique than rare: overlooking the ocean, the ruins of a castle linked to the events of King Arthur and surrounded by green meadows like only the 'England ...
