Reviews of National Trust - Saltram
L. D.
An incredible time capsule of the beautiful and jointly, the regal. Thank God for the National Trust, as they’ve long engendered and fostered preserving landmark buildings, castles and all sorts dabbling in and out of British history. Saltram House offers an incredibly breathtaking experience and step through hundreds of years all at an extremely reasonable fare. This Christmas was The Nutcracker theme, in which decor of each room was tailored and completely fashioned to adhere to a running narrative of the aforementioned suite/ballet. It was completely charming and breathtaking in all the best ways possible. A lot of love and attention went into making sure that all was period authentic and every physical article had subtle referencing of the great “Nutcracker “. Thematically, it was truly a sight and sound that was intoxicating. Year round, the house and grounds are close by to residents and visitors to the Plymouth region. The house has also lived on in cinema, being featured in a number of high profile Hollywood films that cater to those who love Victorian era romanticism.
A superb outing and a great experience with kind and attentive staff and a nice spot for tea on the grounds. Beautiful enveloping landscapes further cement these grounds as a picture perfect outing. Highly recommended!
L. C.
Every time we visit there's some sort of event going on and it's always really well thought out and ran by the volunteers. The Christmas ball event is really good and well planned out. A beautiful old estate with tons of history.
S. S. K.
Atmospheric park, picturesque gardens with lovely views over the hills.
I assume it is a highly enjoyable place for a whole family to visit all year round.
We were lucky to catch their nutcracker installation. Over 30 Christmas trees, thousands of lights accompanied by the Tchaikovsky music.
Children get a treasure maps to explore.
Do pay a half day to visit it !
M. D.
Considering we're heading into winter and today was a tad damp, what a great place. The house had the Nut Cracker display throughout the house and a well done to the staff at Saltram. Excellent effort. The grounds are great even at this time of year. Will we return? Indeed we shall. Stopped off at the Chapel cafe for a tea and hot chocolate plus a warm treat 😋.

Fantastic place to visit. History at your fingertips. Played on piano in the one of the rooms with ppl in it. It was magic. I was transported in time just for a few seconds. Words can't put it right for this experience to be shared. Highly recommend visiting this place just at entrance to Plymouth.
L. W.
A beautiful February garden and an orangery with oranges in it. Lovely grounds with views of the river for a walk with the dog and plenty of parking, even for our large motorhome. We also enjoyed the café / courtyard and browsing in the secondhand bookshop.
R. P.
We love this place. Great for a ride or a walk. Great for dogs to have time off lead and meet other friendly dogs. Different tracks to use so you don't get bored of the same route if you go more regularly
C. G.
Lovely afternoon walk around the grounds, in the sunshine, with a light fresh breeze. Had a pot of tea and cream scone outside the Chapel Tearoom. Very relaxing experience! Great way to finish off the Jubilee weekend.
J. A.
Saltram was decorated for a Christmas Ball, it is by far my most favourite national trust visit. The staff were friendly and knowledgable. We did have to queue to visit the main house, however, it was well worth it.
B. B.
I was extremely impressed with saltram. The renovation works that have been done are spectacular. An imposing house with a rich history, and beautiful informal gardens. I will be revisiting again soon.
R. J.
A National Trust property just next to Plymouth. The house is very beautiful and the staff are always there to help. Can’t judge the gardens as it was extremely hot and I didn’t take the walk.
P. W.
A lovely estate to spend a half day exploring.
As with any National Trust site there is ample parking, toilet and refreshment facilities plus the usual welcome and guidance from the staff.
A number of walks are available, the “boundary” walk is reasonably well surfaced and easy going, it takes the visitor on a circular walk of the estate including Saltram Beach and stretches alongside the River Plym – this takes around an hour if you don’t linger too long in the bird hide.
Returning to the mansion there is further pleasure to be found in the well-stocked and cared for gardens including a large orangery, a gothic summer house and several other buildings peripheral to the main house.
Well worth a visit to anyone in the Plymouth area.
M. D.
We visit this very often, and we are never disappointed. House is beautiful, events for children are always really good. Tea and cakes in the chapel are delicious. Staff very friendly.
C. D.
Wow ! What a gorgeous manor house. I'm so thankful for national trust come rain or shine they have an amazing portfolio of places to visit and this one does not disappoint! Beautifully lavish rooms, interesting history surrounded in well maintained extensive gardens. To top it off a lovely NT shop and coffee area/ restaurants with indoor and outdoor tables.
A. T.
Beautiful place, house & gardens stunning.
My only reason for a 4star rating is that we were only able to see the ground floor of the house due to being too warm upstairs for staff
L. S.
Beautiful day out, lots of ground to walk around, including a view of a rare salt Marsh. Stunning country mansion to visit. Dogs cannot go inside the mansion or the formal gardens. Very friendly helpful staff ☺️
h. w.
I've been round the grounds many times but never in the house but how lovely to see it for the 1st time inside all lite up for their Nutcracker Christmas & with my favourite little humans... so much so I'm going head & purchasing National Trust Membership
L. O.
Beautiful house and gardens to look around. Also lovely estate for longer walks, great place.
E.
Been here a few times; really lovely place. Beautiful gardens with lots of curious exotic plants to gaze at as well as wonderfully tall trees to see. The house is stunning with pristine views inside. The ice cream is always nice. Pictures I took around the outside and inside the house below. (Please do not use).
M. F.
Nice country house packed with art and antiques. If that's not your thing, there's the lovely gardens to stroll through
t. h.
Lovely morning out with friends. The Christmas decorations in the main house were really good. Worth a visit.
R. B.
First time visiting here. What a lovely house. And the grounds weren't too big - but big enough to explore. Thoroughly recommend the Chapel Tea Room. The tea and cheese scones were divine (😂). Definitely would come back - I need to express the Second hand bookshop more.
S. S.
A beautiful house and gardens, with some lovely walks around the estate. Would highly recommend. Play park. Gift shop. Duck pond. 2 cafés, orangery, designated silent space and much more...
T. T.
Went here on a pleasant day, a must for the gardens. The one thing stood out was the enthusiasm of the volunteers who really wanted to impart their knowledge of Saltram.
There lots of oil paintings.
D. C.
Went to see the Nutcracker Xmas decorations. Beautifully done by the volunteers. Also had a walk around the lovely grounds in between the showers. Nice cappuccino in the Stables cafe.
K. W.
Lovely house and gardens. Plenty of walks suitable for everyone. Good amount of carparking available
P. S.
Once again another beauty from the National Trust stable.
As ever the interest is increased exponentially by the informative addition from the volunteer guides.
The grounds are a complete pleasure to explore and none too taxing on the physical self.
M. C.
Went to see their Xmas displays. Absolutely gorgeous. Really well done. Wish there were more to see though.
j. M.
Everyone very helpful went with my Mum in wheelchair. However once inside the paid area the gravelly paths hard to push wheelchair on and uncomfortable for person in the chair. Disabled parking leads onto cobbles to the entrance so you need to go out of disabled parking and around the long way to try and circumfent the cobbles. Free parking if you have a blue badge. Staff in tea rooms lovely and very helpful. Very nice inside. I had a cheese tea cheese scone, cheese, chutney and pot of tea was really nice for £5.50. Mum had coffee and cherry flapjack and the waitress offered and wrapped the remainder in cling film to take away. Orangery was accessible despite gravel and very peaceful. There is a cafe accessible outside the paid area which was easily accessible. Quite a few tarmac paths to walk on again just have to pay for parking £3 if no blue badge. Lots of people to look at, dogs and good kids playground again only parking charge
G. M.
Beautiful house and gardens. Staff very friendly and informative. I particularly enjoyed the kitchen where a gentleman volunteer spent lots of time showing me around and explaining how all the various items worked and what they were used for.
Unfortunately it rained heavily on the day we were there so didn't see much of the gardens but definitely a reason for going back another day.
S. H.
Lovely walk, great kids play park, clean loos, fab coffee
S. B.
Lovely place for walking, stunning views.
National trust owned - carparking fee if not a member.
Relatively flat, theres a lovely little shop, place to grab a coffee or some foods.
Beautiful gardens.
Dog friendly.
Pushchair /cycle friendly.
Lots of wildlife /animals.
I. I.
A stunning property with lovely gardens to walk around. Inside is very well kept and some of the ceilings in the rooms are the most amazing that I have seen in a National trust property. The restraint food was also very good. This is well worth a visit if you are in the area.
K. F.
Wonderful gardens and walks
The house wasn't open today
J. “. M.
Nice gardens and small ish house, great to sit and enjoy the sun.
M. S.
We visited on a Friday of a bank holiday weekend. A long driveway with ample parking. Several coffee outlets and a shop. We sat in the gardens while the kids ran around, very relaxing. Cafe had normal NT cakes and food offerings, good selection of ice cream. We didn't make it to the house, maybe next time.
R. a. P. a. P. P.
Beautiful house and gardens. You can also walk around the estate with your dogs in the woods and by the river. Seating outside best car park for hot and cold drinks. They also have a restaurant with really good quality food but a bit pricey.
L. G.
Lovely walk, nice gift shop, lots of plants to buy. Tasty local icecream 🍦
L. P.
Lovely place to visit on a sunny Spring afternoon. Plentiful displays of tulips, bluebells and beautiful rhododendrons. House formerly owned by the Parker family and still contains much of the original furniture & possessions. Wonderful chinese wallpaper still adorns the walls. Good parking and many estate walks.
D. M.
What’s not to like? Ample car park, nice cafes (with good local ice cream), several good walks to choose from and a historic house to look at (if that’s your thing!). As a family, with dog, like the circular (main) route, stopping at the beach for a quick break before continuing on our way! Our dog likes the newly introduced dog passport meaning he gets a treat each visit!
H. N.
Love Saltram. Great for dogs, walkers, cyclists and kids. Beautiful walk with the estuary in the middle.
M. W.
House wasn't open today but gardens were lovely, 2 of my grandchildren enjoyed doing the summer trail. Wonderfully helpful and jolly staff in the cafe which serves lovely food. I joined the National Trust with the help of a lovely lady so am looking forward to returning and visiting other NT places 😀 thankyou Saltram House/staff.
I. H.
Lovely house and gardens. Helpful and friendly volunteers.
Z. S. K.
Fantastic house and gardens on outskirts of Plymouth. You have to experience it.
J. C.
We're National Trust members who live nearby, but have never visited so decided to put that right.
Interesting pieces of art in the main house, enthusiastic and friendly volunteers.
Good way to pass a couple of hours if you have a casual stroll around the gardens.
S. C.
We didn't go around the house but took the circular walk towards the river and then back to the house. Which was very pleasant, plenty of poo bins for our four legged friends. On returning to the house we had brunch at the cafe on site, 2 breakfast baps, coffee and hot chocolate, good value for money. Outside seating area was excellent, covered area and sheepskin type rugs on the benches to sit on. Rugs for extra warmth if required and Christmas music piped through to the speakers, a little loud for our taste but a nice touch with the Christmas tree. Didn't go into the bookshop or giftshop.
J. G.
Lovely National Trust site which we visit every 2-3 months. This visit was specifically for the children's Halloween Trail. This was very good and actually seems to cover most of the garden area.
L. H.
Stunning NT property with amazing room guides who are very knowledgeable.
C. C.
Enjoyed a nice walk around the parkland. Just two things let it down. The beach is looking rather derelict and there was rubbish strewn around. Also the queue for the cafe was really long. May be worth redesigning that whole area so they have two lines in each side instead of just one.
F. H.
Lovely property, beautiful decor with many treasures to see. Good views over Plymouth from the surrounding parkland and some interesting parts of the garden to explore. In early autumn there is a beautiful scent to the gardens, possibly from ivy-leaved cyclamen. Our visited suffered from what I'm now realising might be common across national trust properties - locking the toilets before close of play! Do be warned if you've come for the day and have a long journey home.
A. W.
Lovely house and grounds, with helpful volunteer guides on each room in the house to talk to and then lovely walks in the garden of the wider grounds. Also, really good hot chocolate and enjoyable cream teas outdoors or inside.
G. L. C.
Nice for dog walks, coffee and cakes. I didn't look round the house or gardens due to having a dog, so can't comment on these aspects. Good to visit though.
T. A.
Arrived on a really rainy day, went inside for my 1st visit to Saltram House. it was very good with information coming from the volunteers there. The place was well set up for the Georgian Christmas theme with lots of well decorated trees. Overall it was good mt partner enjoyed it well.
P. B.
Fairly regular sort of National Trust place. Large, stately home with fairly extensive gardens. Some interesting architecture, with lots of Greco-Roman and Egyptian inspired details. Unfortunately the upstairs wasn't open for our visit due to a lack of volunteers, but there was still plenty to see!
P. C.
Just visited the grounds. Grandson loved riding his bike and good for dogs too. Cafe had lovely latte coffee. Beautiful scenery
J. K.
Another superb National Trust venue.. as usual beautifully kept.. they are truly an asset and trust holders to our old buildings… this house was a delight, chatting to the knowledgeable NT volunteers about the history is great… interesting history here as always… a canny farmer not that interested in farming, married into wealth and his wife turned the old farmhouse into this incredible building… lots to see and explore… and the great grounds ideal for exercise.. its very popular, so good to see so many happy people out and about…
L. M.
Lovely rustic gardens house was lovely not too grand
J. P.
Beautiful house and gardens, but when we went there, it was too packed outside the NT entrance as lots of people were walking around the grounds and at the play park (with no social distancing). The car park was packed. Inside the NT Garden, it was ok, and the gardens were great.
P. B.
The house and grounds are amazing, on our visit the upper floor was closed due to there not being enough staff on duty. Although we suspect this was due to there being a number of school visits that day. There was plenty to see and lots to learn about the period and the house etc. Well worth a visit.
V. P.
We've travelled about to many national trust places and saltram is right on our doorstep and we have only ever walked through the grounds and woods, however this is the first time we've been inside what's open of the house and it is by far the most beautiful inside and everything is original
O. R.
Beautiful estate with lovely walks, two cafés, children's playground, picnic tables. Visit to the house also very interesting. Superb local ice cream!
M. D.
The Christmas decorations in the house are beautiful. Sad that there were no outside lights this year. Went to the cosy café in the converted chapel for a very tasty lunch. I had soup which was perfect for a vegan. Lots of choice in the NT shop. Good quality stock.
P. S.
Beautiful house and surrounding garden, friendly staff. Volunteers very helpful and if requested will give lots of information and stories regarding the house and family that lived there.
K. H.
Lovely National Trust property, the house and gardens are beautiful. Their Christmas display is fantastic although it’s always very busy because of that!
A.
Visited for the Christmas lights, which were brilliant as usual. On a regular visit saltram is a lovely house and well maintained. Nice cafe lovely walks.
J. M. S.
The Saltram Ball... a novel and well executed theme. Plenty of youngsters .... and adults enjoying seeking the mice! The gardens and grounds were is great shape.
K. H.
Lovely place. Especially for free and in the sun!
C. H.
Great place but you do get some selfish walkers who think they own the place and take up the whole walking area . I also get a little frustrated with people who walk dogs off lead but don't watch them cause they are too busy talking , thier dogs annoy other people's walk or run or bike ride . This isn't a go at all dog walkers as most are in control of thier hounds x just a few selfish ones spoil it for other people
M. L.
Saltrum is a lovely local nation trust park that has a formal house and gardens to explore (for a fee/membership) as well as a 2 mile walk around the estate with views over the estry.
Great place to go with kids for a stroll, bikes and dogs are welcome too. Cafe, shops and toilet facilities by the house as well.
R. B.
Saltram is well worth a visit. I love taking my dog. The only thing that lets them down is the cafe. It catering for Gluten free people is so poor. Such a shame.
T. C.
Lovely day out at Saltram gardens.
House not open today. Gardens are kept immaculate, lots of wild flowers too foxgloves, ox eye daisies and valerium to mention a few.
Worth doing the river walk also.
G. R.
Very interesting walk inside the house and enjoyed the walks and views outside, ideal for walking and cycling, dogs are allowed but usually on leads, a good day out for all the family,
J. H.
Took my dog for a walk in the grounds and it was great
j. h.
This is fairly local to me so I can visit easily. The house is only partially open now, will be fully open in March. There is a very smart tea room in the chapel and a restaurant in the main building. There are acres and acres of land to enjoy or walk the dog, picnic on a fine day. If you are not a National Trust member there is a charge for parking plus to visit the house but the grounds and formal gardens are free, there are many interesting trees.
S. Q.
Absolutely fantastic Christmas display.
Well done to everyone. Happy Christmas.
A. C.
A really splendid house close to the centre of Plymouth but set in acres and acres of beautiful parkland. There are some lovely interiors, especially the dining room and the ballroom. The gardens are also lovely with herbaceous borders, wildflower meadows and a walk to a summer house with wonderful views. The waiter-service restaurant in the old chapel is also excellent, with proper loose leaf tea and a strainer!
J. R.
Fantastic walk, beautiful scenery, play area for children, picnic areas, refreshments, a pleasure each visit.
S. F.
Lovely experience for the children, looking for the moose in the hoose and the etchings in the garden, especially fabulous, was the santa experience for the children and adults alike, one piece of advice take your own duck feed (gift shop), gold is cheaper in some countries !! 😀
R. J.
Nice open spaces for dog walking, with the opportunity of leafy lanes and paths if you prefer. Café excellent and staff always happy to help. The house is very interesting to visit as is all National Trust houses.
E. B.
Enjoyed the gardens and Riverside walk, very nice place, will visit again when the house is open
S. P.
We visited Saltram house over the Christmas period and I have to say it was fantastic! It really was a magical experience walking through the house, with different themes in the rooms. Thank you to the staff who took the time to talk to us and answer questions we had about the house. Very knowledgeable! We stopped for a drink in the lovely cafe before taking a wonder around the garden to see the lights, which again was fab. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers, who clearly work hard to make it so incredible. We will most defiantly be visiting again with family. X 🙂
d. f.
Live very close to Saltram using Thier grounds for many walks, great cafe with a lovely house and gardens to explore it's a must to visit.
A. L.
Visiting Saltram House over Christmas was beautiful. One could easily see just how much, work, planning and effort had gone into all displays. One word sums it up for me. Outstanding. Certainly worth a visit B4 it's too late. NT members have free entry and car parking. Best to see SH during the evening when the lights obviously are more effective. All what you'll need to make your visit enjoyable and comfortable is on sight. Treat yourselves to a magnifi ent visit.
E. B.
Saltram House from the National trust is a beautiful house to visit with a lot of history and a large collection of art. From local to famous international artists.
It's great to roam through the house feeling pulled back into time itself. Imagining yourself to be a lord or something walking through your house.
In the old kitchen we had a nice surprise and were greeted with a delicious piece of cake and a cup of vegetable soup by a chef. I've been to a lot of places from the national trust but this was a first time I got something like this.
I loved the house and gardens and is definitely worth a visit!
If you're a member of the national trust you park for free and also visit this and many many more beautiful places for free. More importantly you help preserve all those places and lands.
Z. A.
As a national trust member, I visit Saltram house a few times every year! Last visit was a few weeks ago to see the Enchanted house and garden. It was beautiful as always.
The garden was fantastic although the weather didn't let us enjoy it much.
The café is worth a visit too!
S. J.
Visited today in the midst of a coach party. The garden is beautiful. The entry to the house is timed entry but the staff and volunteers are friendly.
We ate at the self service cafe again which was quiet and we ate outside.
M. P.
The Christmas display was excellent
The lights from the display trees enabled a view of the painting not normally seen as lighting in rooms is normally very poor to protect the paintings
m. f.
Rooms laid out and lit with inspiration from The Nutcracker. Absolutely beautiful. The best I've seen. Shame it's only there for Xmas.
M. M.
Always a good place to go. Visit the house, go for a walk or just a coffee. Always very pleasant.
C. J.
Lovely place good for a walk about plenty of space. Enough going on to keep my 5 and 3 year old entertained. Being picky I would have liked a wider range of drinks in the tea shop available.
N. F.
Loved it here! Plenty of parking, lots of nature walks to choose from. The house is beautiful and the volunteers that we came across were very friendly and knowledgeable. There are 2 cafes here, I recommend the cafe that's closer to the house as they serve creme tea in Old fashioned China pots which is a nice touch. I will definitely be visiting here again this summer.
W. “. K. M.
Such a lovely place, great for walking the dog or even just by yourself. It has a long walking path along the river. There are ducks you can look at and an abundance of dog walkers. It has a nice easy accessible car park and some restrooms.
S.
Lovely place, good for long or short walk. Cafe good food and drink
C. H.
The Nutcracker Christmas decorations were brilliant. The house itself is well maintained and very interesting and the gardens are wonderful.
G. B.
A very nice park - had a long walk around. There's a little centre inside for some basic food and drinks. It attracts many small birds which is good for photography.
C. S.
Great for a Christmas Visit to see the Nutcracker ,a walk round the grounds and a cup of tea! Be sure to book!
L. R.
Loved taking my 19 month old grandson there. Feeding the Ducks is his high light . Lovely quiet walk , good for Nanny , the walking, good for grandson who falls asleep in his pram after a nice Punic in the lovely grounds. He is not old enough yet to venture into the house. But I really enjoy every visit , something new to see each time
a. s.
Beautiful Georgian house and very well keep gardens and grounds.
M. P.
Saltram is a lovely place for a walk on track and more permanent walk ways. Even when it's busy it's possible to leave the main path and find quieter spots. The cafe serves good coffee and cakes, at a price, but that may be just me. Love to come here in winter too, especially for the house.
I. D. U. B. S.
Wonderful house and gardens. Enjoy the house then meander through the limes...
M. M.
Stunning scenery and well worth a walk around both the house and gardens
c. a.
A beautiful Georgian house with expansive gardens and a larger estate to explore.
S.
Lovely friendly staff, lovely coffees and scones. PS .. to the person complaining about not letting dogs 🐶 in as raining ☔️.. dogs are only allowed inside to get what you require beverage wise , get a tray and sit under a brolly in the courtyard !!! It’s only rain ☔️, and before anyone says anything, we have a dog 😂😂😂!! Love it there .. thank you 😊 to all especially those working on this Jubilee holiday period ..
D. H.
Lovely first time visit as National Trust members. Will take one of our dogs next time.
S. N.
Only came to visit the house. Quite interesting, probably more like an art gallery. Some great pictures but many need a good clean! Good place for a day out, plenty of space to walk and picnic.
J. W.
A little disappointed that there were only 5 rooms to see but it was OK. It was too cold to walk the garden so will have to come again in summer.
E. T.
Lovely interesting house, with original furniture and paintings etc.
Beautiful large gardens with lovely borders and plenty of trees!
Choice of cafes.
M. H.
Lovely place to visit. Superb display by the guides of the Nutcracker story winds through the house.
I. B.
Saltram is a lovely estate, with great views & walks. The gardens are stunning & the house itself is a beautiful looking build, full of history & a interesting past.
J. L.
Excellent house and gardens
Helpful and friendly staff
D. S.
Handsome place. Beautiful garden, perfect for a good walk. The house is gorgeous and the staff is very friendly. Perfect for taking photos.
S. K.
Love it here, it’s our local so we come here all the time. Beautiful grounds in all seasons and longer walks around the estate most of which are buggy friendly.
A. H.
House Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so nice stroll through gardens , free for NT members. Nice lunch and good to have drinking water on tap.
S. J.
Grand Georgian house, stunning interiors and formal gardens with surrounding parklands
s. p.
Some absolutely stunning gardens. The house was under repair, but it was still accessible. There is a good childrens treasure hunt in both the gardens and the house.
C. H.
Love this area for a quick stroll or walk.
Got gluten free cake and food OPTIONS! (Yay), but less gf/df. Only had oat or soya milke which is annoying but totally understand.
E. B.
Lovely woodland walks
Great for all ages, bikes and dog walking paths
J. P.
I can only write about the grounds and cafè as my sister, her dog and I walked around the outside and visited the cafè after. This is a lovely, beautiful location to visit. The walk is favoured by all, including dog walkers, families, runners and cyclists. It is pram and wheelchair friendly but there are a few inclines. On the upside there is a constant pathway all the way around. The cafè was clean and pleasant and we happily sat outside in the warm sunshine enjoying some delicious scones and drinking hot beverages. A perfect place for tourists, to meet up with family and friends, walk, talk, eat, explore and enjoy. I have been in the house, inner grounds and shop on several occasions and they don't disappoint either. Enjoy your visit.
K. H.
A huge area of parkland to enjoy with your dog, your family or by yourself. Beautiful park so close to a big city.
S. J.
Lovely place and gardens for kids to run around freely!!
Thankfully the Canon wasn't in working order or have ammunition 🙄🤦♀️
T. B.
Great National Trust property to visit, would love to go back when the rest of the house is open. Kitchen is amazing and the lady I met there on Tuesday was lovely!
A. J. (.
Lovely grounds to walk around. Is £3 for parking and its abit expensive to get in if not national trust members but still lost to explore around the grounds. Definitely worth a visit
R. f.
It is a great place for the whole family, you can ride your bike there over the Laira Bridge and you can find bike parking there, the lights at Christmas are amazing!
W. M.
Great place to visit with usual national trust quality and knowledgeable volunteer guides. Bonus here is the park and walks.photo is one of the exhibit furniture items.
p.
Grounds were lovely - Unfortunately the house was closed (yet again) for "Christmas preparation". Maybe this could have been managed room by room rather than entire house closure.
We had guests from London who missed out.
D. H.
Each year the national trust put on enchanted saltrum for Christmas and we all love it. Truly magical. Don't expect Disney world magical, but really gets me in the festive spirit
P. O.
Had a tour of Saltram House at 12pm today the 14th first time I have been I side the house an amazing tour and the tour guide was extremely informative after the house wandered the grounds and had a spot of lunching cafe couldn't fault a thing food delicious and service spit on
M. F.
Interesting history, wide open grounds and a river walk. Tea in an atmospheric converted chapel listening to the sounds of the 40’s. Perfick.
M. R.
The house itself is probably the best kept to period houses in the south west, as we come to expect from National Trust. In most rooms there was a volunteer staff, who's knowledge was amazing, so all credit there... My only negative was some of the signage was badly placed, or there was none (this refers more to the grounds), as we did get a bit lost looking for things and put their leaflet map away and relied on the GPS on my phone to find things.

My 6 year old loved the I spy sticker game they gave her, to spot things like a squirrel and a fern and stick them on her own map. There was also a bingo sticker game in the house to spot things like a horse in a painting in a certain room that kept her (and me) busy, and she got to try out croquet in the garden, and there's a playground out the front. She also got to buy her own cup of duck food to feed the ducks 😅. The cafe and gift shop are the price you'd expect from a national trust house, but there is a lovely selection of things in the shop. And little guides in every room in the house to explain what everything is.
S. S.
So grateful to have this wonderful house on our doorstep, lovely walk around the estuary, pretty gardens and historic house, excellent 😀
C. D.
A lovely day out, the house was a delight to wander round and interesting to see how the restoration of carpet was being carried out in one room. The Chapel Tearoom was delicious
N. C.
Nice place but sooo dim inside. Could hardly see painings (main reason for visiting) or read information. Lovely grounds.
J. B.
Wet and miserable day but my grandson enjoyed every bit of it . Lovely lunch bought some books at the 2nd hand book shop and gifts in the shop excellent trip
M. C.
Lovely just to walk around the park, so much to see. Enjoyed a cappuccino in the cafe after, great start to the day.

Saltram House.
No time for the House today, but we had a great walk around the beautiful gardens, enjoying the weather, & the coffee from, what was, the Chapel on the way.
Thank you.
S. F.
Beautiful grounds and a pleasant walk for all the family. Outside walks are dog and bicycle friendly.
G. H.
An all year round great place to visit. However, at Christmas time, it sparkles with magic. The grounds are lit up with many different colours, highlighting some of the great specimens of trees and plants being expertly cared for. The real magic is reserved for inside the house, as every year different rooms are decorated along a theme, normally from a fairy tale. The rooms are fantastical creations that glow and impart a sense of wonder in adults and kids alike. Look out for small details that add to the overall theme. And then enjoy a hot drink before going home. A great time, well spent.
I. G.
Great visit to see there Christmas house event, fantastic displays, friendly welcome
Enjoyed our time there.
G. H.
Very nice scenery with wheelchair access and buggy friendly.

Great day out, Extensive gardens, fantasic plants, Amazing Georgian house, full of art and interest.Cream tea or cheese tea in the cafe very good.
C.
Saltram is a lovely place to visit. The first few downstairs rooms of the house were open and outside you can wander in the grounds with walks taking you to the estuary and river. Upstairs rooms may open later. There are two coffee places but I liked the tea room where we had a bowl of soup and chunk of bread. The kitchens were also interesting.
G. B.
Plenty of disabled parking at the entrance to Saltram .
To the side there is a lovely pond with ducks and other birds .
Just inside there is a shop packed with lovely gift ideas .
Through the door there is a cafe with plenty of seating in doors or outdoors .
The gardens are pretty level for easy walking with no steps
There is another cafe and toilet facility in the gardens .
I would highly recommend a visit to Saltram , lovely surrounding any time of the year .
G. E.
Good display and light show of nutcracker ballet story
S. T.
Saltram is lovely. It costs very little to park and there are great walks, a huge green space to picnic on or for the children to play. Fabulous for dog walking. The house and gardens a National Trust so you have to pay but are well worth a visit. There is cafe and a handy outdoor coffee shack. Only downside is that it does get very busy.
J. B.
A beautiful day out ,acres of interesting woodland, wild flowers, & a sandy beach. Beautiful scenery, wonderful shop & house to visit .coffee shops ,ice cream & tasty food to purchase. A very enjoyable day out & dog friendly.
N. C.
Lovely sunny day for lunch outside with a very friendly Robin.
Very Christmassy shop now..always pleasant to visit.
A. C.
Lost my phone but the kind founder handed it in to the chapel cafe staff, much to my relief. Staff lovely. National trust had some super gifts, well priced.
J. j. (.
Great place for a walk ,its beautiful at this time of the year with all the colours of Autumn.

Apparently this place is haunted. Quick question: why can we see a ghost but not a soul? Thanks in advance
B. F.
One of the best, plenty of trails and the scones are really good
S. D.
Fabulous pic-nic sites being built xx
r. h.
Very informative staff who have lots of information on the history. Great place to start for walks also.
S. N.
Beautiful building, Christmas decorations where fantastic a little disappointed that viewing was restricted just to downstairs
L.
Lovely house and gardens, The garden was illuminated for the festive period which was great . Defiantly worth visiting
D. B.
Nice big house, very grand inside. But not alot to do when we went in October! Did see a green parakeet in trees though!! See pic of tree with bird (spot it if you can!) 👍
P. A.
Nice walk around the estate, house was closed due to it being decorated for Christmas
M. M.
Always love going to Saltram. Lovely grounds. Lots of tucked away spaces with benches to sit / picnic / chill. Good food at the cafe and good cake in the coffee shop! What’s not to love?!?
E. G.
Lovely gardens house closed but did not matter
Enjoy lunch good service
J. D.
Lovely house with friendly and knowledgeable volunteer staff. The gardens are a riot of colour and scents. Our first visit but we will be back.
J. G.
Wonderful grounds ,beautiful walk around the peninsula. Do try the ice cream in the little shop really delicious. Did not go in the house . Don't forget to put some money in the box on the gate for the up keep of the gardens . Really hot day so lucky with the weather. Even enjoyed the short ferry ride over and I am not good on boats normally . Worth a visit on a sunny day .
S. B.
Great environment for hiking and leisure experience.
D. M.
Absolutely magical.. beautifully decorated and wonderfully narrated. I went from Bah humbug to oh I love Christmas in 30 minutes.
L. R.
Attended the monthly 10k trail run. Absolutely beautiful. Very friendly and helpful staff and a lush coffee after.
C.
Lovely place to walk, plenty of open space. Parking charges apply unless you are a Mem be of the National Trust. Cafe, shop, toilets and outdoor play area available for children
G. W.
Great place to visit. Lots to see in the garden and on the extended walks around the edge of the estate. God way to spend a couple of hours.
A. W.
Went last year to the Enchanted Saltram last year, and went again this year. Loved the house, it was all decked in fairytales. The gardens were beautifully coloured. Love it.
D. D.
Great estate to visit with dogs although not compulsory! Potty dogs not allowed in the more formal gardens.
The house has 13 staircases - great capacity for goings on I should think.
Lots of paintings!
D. S.
Beautiful Saltram House and its grounds will enchant you.
Superb clean and well stocked Cafe on site along with a gift shop full with surprises and great present ideas.
Walking trails and attractive gardens are plentiful.
We liked the duck pond which was very quaint
P. H.
Lovely day out. Dogs really enjoyed the walk by the river. Gardens are well maintained and in great condition. Staff in the house were friendly and helpful.
P. O.
Lovely walk although dies get busy with fig walkers and young families
S. B.
The staff in the house were very approachable and knowledgeable just a shame you could not go upstairs but saying that a nice day out
S. H.
This is a beautifully located country house with fantastic views, stunning collection of furniture and paintings and friendly and knowledgeable staff. Plenty to see and do, inside the house and outside in the garden.. All the amenities you would expect from the National Trust, ample parking, restaurant and shop and clean toilets. Highly recommend a visit
R. J.
The house itself should now have reopened (25th November). The Christmas Lights should be on now I think.
S. T.
There are no words to describe in full this place. Must to go for nature and heritage lovers. House, gardens, long walking paths, hidden nature miracles, exotic plants. You will find there relax and balance.
D. C.
Beautiful gardens, fascinating house, and lovely cream tea. Definitely worth a visit.👍
D. B.
Great house and gardens
C. S.
Whether visiting for a short walk, a view of the house or activities, Saltram House really is a jewel close to Plymouth.
On top of the normal visits for walks and mini adventures, we've visited many times for Christmas, Easter and Halloween. The Girls have looked each and every visit and the kids activity sheets really do add an element of adventure for young children.
M. A.
Wonderful place to walk the dog, relax and have a cup of tea in beautiful surroundings and visit the stunning house.
T. T.
A great place to unwind, walk and drink great coffee
M. O.
Lovely stroll around the house all decked out for Christmas. And looking for the mice..
C. N.
Excellent National Trust house, gardens and estate grounds on the banks of the River Plym.
Access to the house and garden requires payment unless you are a NT member but free access is available to the extensive grounds apart from a £3 parking charge.
Lovely walks through the grounds with a variety of trails suitable for all including wheelchairs.
Great small but safe circuit for young mountain bikers set aside from walkers paths.
Normal delicious, freshly baked scones available in the cafe.
Plenty of outdoor seating and picnic areas.
J. D.
Beautiful gardens, was unable to access the house as wheelchair was too wide.
E. A. D.
Very popular place. Great for walking, with of without a dog. Hire bikes available too. Non members will need to pay parking, but will worth it.
S. M.
Great park for a evening stroll. Lovely views.
M. A.
We took our 5 year old grandson with us, as we have purchased annual family passes. The estate was in excellent display for the Christmas season with a themed walk through the Nutcracker story. Our grandson delighted in the short reading of the tale at the approach to each room. The rooms were magnificently, delightfully transformed into the images of the bedroom dream, the snowy forest, the kingdom of the sugar plum fairies, the sweet kingdom, and more. It was necessary at this time to make an appointment and to keep that appointment precisely, as the demand was high. Although crowded, due to the scheduling we all had ample time to read the stories and wander through the various marvelous kingdoms. We were enthralled. Thank you National Trust for the preservation of this beautiful site and the production of such a dream state display of a seasonal classic. Loved it
S. G.
Beautiful peaceful oasis, such gorgeous flowers beds and mature trees and lawn in the gardens. So safe for taking small children and letting them run ahead. I also love going alone or with another adult to sit by the pond in the garden.
S. L. N.
Lovely grounds for walking dog. Views and the surroundings are beautiful. Peaceful and quiet. Highly recommended
F. I.
Beautiful house, would of liked to have spent longer and seen more but had young children on my own. Will visit again very soon for a proper look around
K. v. B.
its so nice here, house and gardens are lively and staff friendly. Well kept lawns withing gardens are great for kids
S. B.
Love this place. The staff are very informative! Very historical. Would recommend.
M. J.
Lovely walk around the garden and then along the river. Will return when house reopens
R. B.
Lovely grounds picked the wrong day could not get in the house still enjoyed though
K. S.
This visit was specifically for the Nutcracker event. An excellent display, very well done with a lot of thought put into it. Shame there were no lights in the garden as was done two years ago but I guess as the house shut at four not worth it.
M. L. (.
A good place to walk your dog. National trust. And no dogs in the main house.
n. m.
I walk around here daily, such a peaceful place to go! Only thing I would like to see is some kind of speed restrictions for cyclists... the commuters speed through like its a race track and I worry so much for all the dogs having leisurely walks. The leisure cyclists are great and cause no problems at all.
Saltram is a clean place, plenty of poop bins around which is great. Love seeing all the different wildlife and birds about 😊
C. F.
Lonely walks with dog, lots of dogs whenever I go so if you have a anxious dog maybe not a weekend
A. (.
Very nice house to see. People inside very helpful. Area also very nice. You can make a picnic if you like.
T. H. B.
A lovely place to visit; great grounds with a good variety of walks but be wary of the cyclists.
P.
Lovely grounds, circular walk to the river and back, approx 45 -60 minutes at leisurely pace, not too steep. Lots of parking.
R. T.
Nice couple of hours on the kids pumpkin trail in the formal gardens, we live close by so visit on a regular basis.
My main moan is that although they have in recent times introduced a £3 parking charge for the large number of none members who regularly use the wider grounds the kids play area
Which was packed is in dire need of a major upgrade.
P. B.
Absolute lovely place to visit if you are in Plymouth area. Massive place and gardens likewise so even on weekend at its busiest, it doesn't feel crowded.
E. P.
Great day out, loved the house tour. Very authentic.
D. B.
Good place to visit lots of history garden are lovely
L. D.
I got in free on heratige week. Really nice grounds etc.
m. k.
Nice house. Lovely grounds. Two nice cafes
M. T.
A beautifully Christmas decorated house. I was spellbound by the display of lghts
J. H.
Always great, easy walks, great gor dogs
P. S.
Always walk there, great place for my dogs, members for the last 4 years. Also I love the wildlife, saltram as been part of my life for a very, very long time from when I was about 8 years of a age. I am now 50.😁😎 thankyou.
S. O.
Great Christmas lights and story book themed house tour.
L. W.
Lovely walk inside and out for the family. Lots of places to picnic, and different paths to follow. Great space for little ones to run around, plus no fear of uncollected doggy doo on the inside as only guide dogs allowed. Dogs welcome on the outside walks, so that's a good runaround for them too.
A. R.
Fantastic walks great if you have a dog
S. B.
Lovely walks with the dog. Great food in the restaurant.
L. P.
Guides were brilliant and all staff very friendly. Great for dog walking and a picnic.
M. K.
Grounds open but house closed until 17th May 2021
Has a beautiful walk through the woods by the water with my lady ❤️
j. s.
Whilst the website says dogs are welcome, what I doesn't say is that dogs are not welcome near the house. You can take then around the estate on some very nice walks but can not go past the welcome desk the house looked lovely from the outside, next time we will have to leave the dog at home.
Staff are very welcoming and helpful!!!
L. W.
Perfect for dog walking/ cycling/ running- plenty of different routes to choose from and a lot of it is wheelchair/pram accessible which is lovely. Beautiful scenery, it does get very busy though and also when we are not in Lockdown non national trust members have to pay £3 to park. Apparently the house and gardens are good too but I've only ever visited the park and cafe!
P. J.
Lovely place to spend a few hours. Parking a reasonable £3 for non members. Lovely walks around the grounds. Good cafe and shop. I do like a nice duck pond and this one doesn't disappoint!
w. l.
Amazing location with such lovely scenery 😍😊
L. K.
Lovely space, great cafe with friendly staff throughout. Accessibility by pram if walking into Saltram is somewhat awkward due to 'natural', stoney path in or cattle grids on road entrance.
T. H.
Even in winter a fab place to visit, went through the house and round the gardens and had tea and cake in the chapel tea rooms which was lovely and the staff were very friendly.
P. W.
An amazing place great tea room in the garden... Great cream teas
F. T.
Enchanting. So much work has gone into making the inside of the house magical. It's stunning.
D. C.
Very interesting house with beautiful interiors designed by Robert Adam. There are also many paintings some by notable artists such as Joshua Reynolds. The guides are knowledgeable about the room contents and paintings.
The grounds are very large allowing for good walking through the landscape.
There is a small area of planted garden by the orangery, with tropical type plants and some flowers.
The chapel cafe does a good cream tea and has outside seating in the garden overlooking the house.
r. g.
Wonderful scenery and scenic walks along the river. .A well stocked cafe and the Chapel tea room is well worth a visit for cream teas and home made puddings and cakes. It is nostalgic in the Chapel taking you back to another era. The gardens around Saltram are lovely too.
A. B.
Lovely place to walk, nice little cafe and shop. Cheep parking without going into the house itself. Small park and climbing areas for children.
A. D.
It was very well kept and i enjoyed my time there
S. R.
Just a great place to come to get away from the hustle and bustle of life
G. G.
This is a lovely NT property to visit and at Christmas it takes on a whole new dimension. It's truly magical to walk through the illuminated grounds.
D. W.
Went today with my daughter to feed the ducks. We love going for a wk round saltram, lovely place. We also treated ourselves to some yummy ice cream even though it was raining!!!😁😁
D. P.
I love to walk around saltram. Seeing all different families walk with friends and there animals, hearing them laugh and talk about anything and everything. Great for cycling and running. Lovejy clean and well kept grounds .Great little places for kids to explore .
G. Y.
As a National Trust member I love incorporating this into my bike ride and having tea and cake at The Chapel Tea rooms in the garden. Bliss on a sunny day
D. J.
Lovely house and gardens especially the chapel tea rooms
L. B.
A wonderful wander through the grounds. Lovely to see it so well maintained. Visited the shop. Beautiful displays of quality Christmas products and I was tempted!! Thank you National Trust!
A. W.
Very good NT property to visit, plenty to see both inside and outside with ample parking. The house has a rich history with centuries old paintings, fine examples of China, stunning plaster work on the walls and ceilings and excellent library. The outside is clean with gravelled pathways through wooded areas. However best of all is the food especially the coffee and cake, not forgetting the bacon and cheese toasted sandwich.
M. B.
There's quite a lot to do hear, the main thing is walking the grounds, which you can walk dogs or go for a bike ride;
There are lots of trails to go on which is free to do.
There is also a children's play park, near to the Café, duck pond and gift shop. (From when this was post the children's play park under going maintenance work so may not be open).
You can also hire a bicycle near the duck pond and toilet's.
The café is your normal national trust price's (so a bit pricey on somethings).
At the gift shop you can purchase your normal gifts, as well as plants and you can buy duck feed to feed the ducks.
You can also take a walk around the garden of Saltram house, if you're a member of the national it is free and if you're not then you will have to pay admission fee. With in the garden there is an old chapel which has been turned into a tea room, there's a beautiful orangery to look at and you can walk around the house. (They often put on activities around the year like one year they did a Gruffalo walk and for Christmas 2021 they told the story of the nutcracker in the house with beautiful displays.
There is a car park onsite free to national trust members or a small fee if not. And yes they are disabled spaces close to the café.
P. B.
Beautiful grounds, lovely walk returning alongside the estuary and estate.
F. F.
Beautiful house, lots to look at inside, small playground for the children and toilets/cafe, secondhand bookshop, giftshop.
K. M.
Love national trust at saltram the gardeners are fab and what a beautiful array of flowers the tulips, are stunning. Cafe staff are friendly and Chapel time room is a delight. Shame that the welcome guest area is not so accommodating because at 4 40 the other day we go shunted out of the garden by a rude lady telling us to go down this path the lime Grove. Funny thing was I'm 49 nearly and my mother who is 71 couldn't believe what we were hearing. We felt like naughty school kids misbehaving. Shame on you saltram. The other national trust places don't do that 😒 . It has put us off we are frequent visitor and even during the covid lockdown still paid our membership. Sadly 😥 we feel a little 😞 . In all my years I have never been treated like this in any national trust place. That's why you get a 4 instead of 5 take care your loyal 🐰
S. C.
Beautiful country house gardens and have excellent paths round the estate for walkers and cyclists. Family friendly and child friendly for younger cyclists that may struggle with hills. Very beautiful walks by the river.
G. C.
Went to the Enchanted Christmas. Best thing we did this year. It was amazing well done Saltram :)
Y. H.
Just back home after a great walk around Saltram gardens. The walk from the Castle back to the Orangery is simply stunning with wild flowers. The conservation work to the Orange Grove is fantastic . what a wonderful place to sit and enjoy. Well done to all the gardening team
R. M.
Really interesting place although you can only see part of the ground floor of the house currently. Acres of lovely grounds and gardens to stroll around. Everything is very well managed and queueing was at a minimum during our visit.
K. B.
Beautiful house, grounds and views. A must see property
R. Z.
Great Christmas scenes dotted around the House and gardens, Chapel tea rooms excellent.
S. a. h. C. a. P.
This setting gives you a good walk and workout, with outstanding scenery and nature. I love it here
C. T.
Beautiful place. Enchanted walk during xmas was beautiful.
B. B.
Lovely paths with the dell walk being a little more challenging, excellent coffee excellent staff. House is always well presented with its gardens being good to loose yourself for half hour, albeit dogless! Maybe some pooch huts in the courtyard?
l. r.
Beautifully decorated for Christmas, house is amazing and an enjoyable walk around the grounds
J. B.
Went to go round the house and it wasn't open on day we went- traffic is horrendous to get there- so did not go back when open
R. H.
Visited Park and garden. Great facilities to support a happy family visit to this wonderful landscape.
R. H.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the 'Enchanted Saltram' event. Worth arriving slightly before dark and visiting the house first as the queues were very long later in the evening.
J. S.
Despite covid restrictions we had a very pleasant time at Saltram. The house is quite special and we weren't expecting the gardens to be as beautiful and varied as they are. The newly restored Orange Grove is a must. Lunch in the Chapel tearoom was delicious, good value and efficiently served. Staff everywhere were helpful and friendly.
S. G.
Lovely gardens. Only part of the house is open to visitors but it was really worth going in. The rooms we saw were very impressive. Staff/Volunteers were extremely knowledgeable which made it so much more interesting.
A. T.
House and gardens are nice, tea house is lacking:
"Luxury" hot chocolate was just standard powdered chocolate, they were out of stock on many varieties of tea and Victoria sponge cake was dry.
Staff at the house were very nice and informative providing nuggets of information when asked.
TL;DR: visit the house and gardens, avoid the tea house
J. J.
Lovely place to visit especially with the space and colours of Autumn. Do wish the cyclists all had bells, and used them though. Think there should be a Beware sign up!!
There is a tea coffee cake biscuit hut outside and more tables to sit near the car parking which is good. Toilets close early I guess, when the van closes? Lots of people still there after 4pm so wish they could stay open longer as many of us needed to use them!
P. W.
Excellent, impressive, a jewel in the crown of the National Trust, I thought Castle Drogo was good until we visited and toured round this superbly presented house with its stunning collection of artefacts. Hats off to the volunteers for keeping their calm with some of the visitors and their non stop inane questions.
D.
A really nice place to walk and have a coffee
E. S.
First time back in over 25 years and i had forgotten what a lovely place Saltram Park is,and we will not be waiting another 25 years before going back for another lively and informative walk throughout this hidden gem on the outskirts of Plymouth
A. V.
A beautiful house and gardens at Christmas time in the lights.
j. m.
The House has a very impressive selection of paintings, carpets and kitchen utensils. Its certainly worth a look. There are two cafes here and as these are national trust there is a good selection of hot and cold snacks and beverages.
E. S.
We generally visit to walk our dog as do many others, lovely spot, my only concern is as the walks are shared paths that some cyclist travel far too fast for the conditions and don't allow you enough time to get your kids and dogs out of their way..
L. 1.
Amazing atmosphere to come and see the historical house or come for a walk or pop in for a bite to eat or drink. Dog friendly. Amazing staff too.
V.
Fabulous decs as always and this years garden made us all laugh and dance with the disco balls. X
D. D. w.
Great place to visit. We enjoyed the scenery and history. Cafe was good but understaffed or overwhelmed but that didn’t spoil the morning just delayed us a little. Look forward to returning.
T. B.
Lovely grounds. Great place to walk and take the grandkids. Play ground was good with Woods and just a great place to while a way the hours.
T. H.
Beautiful Georgian stately house close to Plymouth. It has many fine rooms and an orangery. It has the best equipped Victorian kitchen in the National Trust.
Google maps will take you down a very narrow lane if you leave from the A38, so go into Plympton to get into Saltram House
O. W.
Volunteers deserve a proper pat on the back. NT volunteers are always lovely, but on 18/06/21 the staff on at 11am where amazing! Especially the gent in the dining room. All so happy to give you info on the house, nice to feel the passion. Well done x
D. J.
Visited with friends and loved the walk, scenery, the shop, cafe and ducks in the pond, recommended.
S. B.
Had a lovely day on the walks around the grounds and a wonderful lunch in the cafe.
We look forward to coming back to look around the house.
l. m.
Lovely place staff so helpful and the hot chocolate is really good, the pictures are from Christmas
A. M.
Close to Plymouth but you wouldn't know that when you are here. Lovely walks down but the river or around the estate. The house is beautiful, the gardens lovely (especially some amazing trees) and the cafe (when open again) is always good.
M.
Nice cafe by the duck pond,.. food was ok... House was closed.
G. H.
We went to see the Christmas light show they had on over the holidays. It was absolutely stunning. All the fairy tale scenes through the house worked perfectly into the interior. Nothing ever seemed out of place. The gardens were beautifully lit as well. So many things to see and you could even stop for a nice hot drink part way around and once again when you'd finished. They have some lovely shops including a pre-loved book shop which I adored. I'm not sure what it's like on other days but it's definitely worth the visit over Christmas. The kids will absolutely love it. The house and gardens are not dog friendly but the grounds around it are, been on plenty of walks around those and you don't need to be a member to enter them either. You will mostly likely have to pay for parking though if you are not a National Trust member.
I. W.
Fantastic historical property. A truly beautiful and house and well kept formal gardens too. Having afternoon tea by the chapel is a lovely touch, and there are always activities to do with the kids - especially in summer. The wider grounds also offer several routes for an afternoon stroll and dog walkers!
L. A.
Great place for all the family you visit
m. r.
Large National Trust property close to Plymouth. Extensive grounds with many opportunities for dog walking. Good tearoom.
M. R.
What an amazing place to walk. I went to the outside cinema. Very organised. Very enjoyable. Just go well wrapped up.
B. C.
This is a fantastic location. The grounds are beautiful and provide the most pleasant walks and and the views are quite spectacular. The house itself has many, many items of interest. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and are keen to impart gems of wisdom to enhance your visit. The cafe is clean and very well presented. All staff are welcoming and a pleasure to deal with. Go, enjoy. Allow plenty of time - 3 hours minimum.
D. S.
Enchanted Saltram well worth the visit spectacular Christmas spirit in bundles x
K. J.
Excellent day out. The gardens were fantastic and the house had lots of interesting furniture and paintings to see. Particularly enjoyed seeing the Chinese silk wallpaper.
D. R.
Lovely house, interesting artifacts and gorgeous gardens and estate to walk around.
P. W.
Lovely house, volunteers were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Grounds were nice to walk around. It was a shame the upstairs was closed otherwise this would have been 5*
M. E.
Beautifully restored and maintained. A truly astounding grounds with amazing views and walks. There is always so much to see from a vast range of plants, flowers, scenery and wildlife to activities for younger members. A nice cafe and shop and the house itself is a wonderful period piece.
B. S.
Absolutely love the place, walk it every day normally about 0500 every morning nobody around, love listening and watching the wildlife pretty dark that time of the morning but lots to see and listen to, deer, badgers, owls, foxes, waders, trees blowing in the breeze my dog absolutely loves the place too, and I feel at one with nature.
C. E.
One of the best national trust houses, candidates fantastic walks through wider areas, Estuary coast and pastoral fields...even when it's busy you still manage to find yourself space to walk quietly.
S. M.
Always a nice walk trees beach front excellent for dogs
C. R.
Magical lighting. Beautiful, really enjoyable. Will come again.
S. B.
Very nice place lovely walks house was interesting although only downstairs open so be nice to come back when all open sometime if we down this way, gardens also nice for October
A. k.
Lovely walk with the dog and the family enjoyed hearing the birds singing along will definitely be coming here more often
J. B.
Normally a 5 star attraction only dropped a point as some rooms now off limits, however we had a great visit, the Christmas decorations were just wonderful, there was a trail based on the nut cracker suite which some were not familiar with, this house is our favourite National Trust property and we highly recommend it, hopefully more rooms will reopen soon
A. D.
Lovely attraction, beautiful gardens and interesting house. The coffee shops are good although the main one by the entrance can get very busy at peak times and the queuing system doesn't seem to be ideal. If visiting the house and gardens, I'd recommend the tea shop on the inside. It has a smaller menu but is usually quieter. Parking can be busy too especially at weekends.
N. C.
A great place to visit in Plymouth, suitable for all ages and mobilities. Grounds well maintained. Beautiful scenery. Love to exercise my dogs there.
M. G.
Great river/sea walk, house and vast gardens were beautiful

Excellent place. Its a pleasure to walk in this terrain

A. B.
Nice walk around the gardens

Lovely to walk around the house and Garden
M. S.
3 different food options within 50 yards of each other! House is impressive, gardens traditional. We enjoyed the melancholy of the Melancholic Walk!
L. B.
Lovely house, gardens and walk. Big car park. There is also a National Trust Shop and a cafe.
C. T.
Really lovely setting with beautifully done house. Dies get busy and is very popular especially when special events are on such as at Christmas. They have had to close the car parks on occasion because events were so busy. Lovely views and walks around the grounds. Lovely tea room and cafe with nice gift shop too.
C. G.
A fabulous house with superb gardens. We took the long walk to the Quay and Boathouse. The weather was lovely with lots of visitors. It is very welcoming with staff readily on hand to answer any questions. We were lucky enough to have a tour of the house before it opened and thoroughly enjoyed the history of the house. Well recommended.
J. B.
Amazing house with a large array of paintings, if you're interested in art history you should visit here. There are beautiful gardens and it's great for walking. I would also recommend the traditional tea room, enjoy being treated like Victorian gentry for a few minutes.
c. w.
Beautiful. Chapel restaurant lovely as were the grounds.
T. H.
Great National Trust venue with events all year round to suit the season. The volunteers are all passionate and enthusiastic to share their knowledge of the house and grounds. It is worth paying (if you're not a member) to visit the inner garden and house.
The cafe is large and offers catering for babies as well as small children (usually picnic boxes). It also has a pleasant view of the duck pond.
If you do go into the inner gardens, make sure you walk all the way down to the small tower.
K. M.
Christmas event very good and great for the family
h. w.
Shame upstairs wasn't open. This was only due to them not having enough volunteers to open it up.
W. T.
Great place to go for coffee, brilliant views and walks.
M. C.
A great place for a visit, lovely house and gardens and a great cafe to grab a bite to eat and drink. We’ve been a couple of times, the house is best in the summer as quite a large part is closed over winter, the gardens are wonderful all year as they change with the seasons.
Another National Trust treasure.
A. S.
A wonderful place to visit, especially during the festive period. The volunteer guides were friendly and welcoming and most keen to explain the stories behind this year's enchanted themes. The carpark was insanely busy as expected. Enjoyed the illuminated garden and the music playing.
z. H.
Went for christmas lights. The whole family loved it.
M.
Great house and gardens. Nice cake in the tea room.
W. T.
All round ideal for any group day out. Cycling, running, paddling or simply walking with or without the family dog, super good fun. Tree climbing also included...
K. W.
Fantastic gardens, super inside the house and great tearooms
S. S.
Picked a great day to go. There was cider making, autumn leaf crown making and woodwork workshops. Lots to see and do other than the house itself. Weather was lovely so full use of garden and grounds was enjoyed. A full day's entertainment for all the family. 😆
L. H.
Just visited Saltram to view their Magical Nutcracker story display. It is so lovely and Christmasy. Their staff have gone to alot of trouble to make it perfect. Well done. Children will love it.
G. T.
Lovely house and gardens. Worth a visit.
S. R.
Wonderful house once owned by the very rich, kindly, good-humoured and cultured Parker family, packed with the original 18th century fittings, furnishings and art. Encapsulated within the Georgian mass is a Tudor manor. Huge grounds full of charming touches, lots of fun and long walks. And the café serves more than just cake.
L. H.
Lovely house and tea and cakes very nice
S. B.
Beautiful home and surroundings
E. B.
Spring flowers and garden totally stunning
S. C.
Wonderful example of the National Trust at work. We had not been made aware the house closes much earlier than the site so we were unable to get into the house. But, we were not that bothered as the grounds were so lovely and it was a nice day. At only 45 minutes away from us we will just go back again. The tea room is lovely and worth a visit!
M. C.
Beautiful gardens for an Autumnal stroll in the sunshine
p. d.
Only walked the park but pleasant wooded river stroll.
d. b.
Lovely place for the whole family no matter what age. Grounds are always well kept, lots of different events to keep the kids busy all year round. Go for a walk, run or ride next to the river and through the woodland tracks.
D. M.
Been our second home since we had a baby. Friendly staff, lovely food, great walks in the 'countryside' that are pushchair friendly. Lots going on through the year. The little one loved the lights in the house and grounds at Christmas. Well done.
J. M.
Great place to visit, we went with friends and our dogs ,after had a coffee at the van and sat looking at the flowers .the weather was sunny although a bit of a nip in the air .Xmas is a must at saltram highly recommend.
B. S.
Fascinating place. Great gardens and the cream tea in the chapel tea room is excellent. Lovely walk around the grounds. Don't be put off by the deceptively out of scale map...the distance between points is really not what it appears to be!!

What can you say. One of the beautiful place in PLYMOUTH with great gardens and grounds. We have National trust membership so we used it as our extended garden. Such a nice atmosphere and lovely place. Never ever felt bored or tired. Fully natural and most pure oxygen you can get here. Good cycling tracks, lots of dog walkers with few annoying dogs. Great pond and restaurant service. Great walk and great great bird watching estuary.
Most beautiful summer Time riots of colours.
Oh boy since we left PLYMOUTH we die to go back to this place.
Utterly Heavenly place. I wish such heaven were around London.
S. H.
Love our local National Trust site. Plenty of good walks on decent tracks and trails, lovely house with some limitations on access. Cafe is ok, but staff can seem lackadaisical, and queues too long many times, so if you see a seat grab it and send the kids to stand in line
R. M.
Beautiful gardens lovely walks.
P. M.
Well worth a visit to see the Christmas displays
S. G.
Lovely dog walks here, accessible for all ages, wheel chair friendly. The cafe and shop is nice. It gets busy but we managed to park both times without a problem. Picnic tables and childrens area. Not been in the house yet as had my dogs so will definitely be going back.
J. F.
I only go to walk the dogs. Great place for that. Plenty of families with young children use it as well as its traffic free. Two points, if your not a member of the National Trust it costs £3 to park your car, also a awful lot of dog owners don't pick up after their pets!
L. L.
A lovely circular walk around the site takes in views of the house, grounds and estuary. Would love to come back with bikes to cycle around the route. Parking is challenging on busier days, it was surprising that no one asked to see our National Trust membership cards to park.
S. J.
Beautiful house. Friendly informative staff
C.
A lovely place with really nice volunteers. The weather was awful but there was a fantastic selection of paintings and rooms to visit inside the house. Maybe we will save the walks on the grounds for a nicer day.
C. M.
Nice cup of tea and we are national trust members and Saltram is local to us
C. L.
Beautiful place to visit suitable for all the family. May be slightly biased as we are national trust members but there is something for everyone. Lots of paths for walks, runs, cycling, picnics, dog walks, children's play park, survival/outdoor skills, cafe catch ups and much more! This is all before I mention the beautiful house which is opened for all occasions and different events throughout the year. Would recommend to anyone in all weather.
M. J. S.
Stunning building and beautiful grounds. There are lots of features and things tucked away to explore. The parts that are available for free are great, but National Trust members really get their moneys worth.
The quality of food in all of the eateries is great for all ages. Visitors were encouraged to leave/find painted stones around the grounds too (which was a social trend at the time we visited) and even created activity sheets for kids around it. I found it refreshing that the site embraced this rather than trying in vain to stop people doing it.
Highly recommended.
N. B.
Beautiful house and grounds, friendly staff and a lovely tea room! The main house is mostly closed at this time of year (and they gave us a reduced entry fee because of it), but it was an interesting place to look around. Definitely a place we'll be going back to!
A. E. (.
Great grounds for jogging, walking, cycling etc. I did not go in the house as it didn't appeal to me. They have improved the parking and are doing additional ground works to create paths. The only downside of the grounds is that they have introduced pay to park but it's a reasonable price. £3. National trust so house entrance is extra. The is also a cafe and a small play park.
T. “. M.
Nice large grounds with good accessible routes. We didn't go in the house or gardens. There is plenty to entertain children outside and around (duck pond, playground, table tennis tables). Nice views of the estuary.
T. P.
Beautiful gardens. Lovely house with many artworks. Very good facilities, will definitely visit again
G. B. M. G.
Wonderful walk and house just outside the city. The Nutcracker event on at Christmas was beautiful and volunteers inside were really helpful
S. B.
Great for a walk all year round, great circuit for jogging too. Beautiful place, waterside, countryside, English estate mansion with cafe, farm animals all make for a natural afternoon out. Parking is £3 or free for national trust badge holders.
K. W.
Visited so many times, love it! Stunning house has such an elegance outside and to the interior rooms, peaceful gardens with excellent orangery and mature trees. Large parkland and boundary walk skirting the estuary for poochie. At the moment some facilities are unavailable because of covid19 but ordinarily has excellent catering both in the complex and chapel tea room. Nt Shop and friendly staff too. Relaxed feel to the entire place.
D. P.
We visited without realising that it was a Christmas extravaganza so couldn't really see much of the house. But the displays in the rooms were beautifully done. Especially the dancing princesses. A lovely day for a walk in the parkland.
P. W.
Lovely place to walk or / & visit the house food is good as well. It can get busy. Will go again (pay to park or nt members free) great for couples, children (play area) and older people (perhaps not upstairs in the house) timed tickets for the house at busy times
A. F.
National trust land so need to pay parking if not a member. Members get access to the house and inner gardens for free. The majority of the ground are free to use and walk through even if parked at other entry points such as sainsburys marsh mills or coypool retail park. It has a cycle/walking route running through it.
Also has a few trails for young children on bikes to jump on.
Then there is a place called the Dell (follow signage) which is less suitable for prams and is more off the beaten path with narrower paths and rocky underfoot. But it’s more scenic and different to just walking the 2/3miles circular route you can walk
j. h.
The nutcracker theme is fantastic well worth the visit
A.
Only walked around the woodland paths. Very pleasant ☺
K. L.
Great day our loved it. Staff are great and the area is amazing. Loads of walks and the house is stunning. The food as always with national trust is great.
D. G.
The grounds are lovely to walk through, even with young children. The house itself is beautiful inside and has a really interesting history. There's a play park too, and a cafe. I take my 3yo and 1yo probably one a month.
T.
Just amazing place! Now have to pay for car park but that's fine as isn't too much and is just really nice at any time in the year. Food is good but obviously not the best but they have cake and coffee and drinks so all is good. Nice loop walk around and good and semi easy and not hard for walkers of all abilities.
R. D.
Just delightful great for a family walk
C. M.
Brilliant place for young families to experience a bit of nature. Long and short walks. Easy to get to from Plymouth. Two pleasant cafes which cater for gluten free diets. Regular seasonal special events. Good parking availability.
s. k.
Went to view the Christmas lights which were amazing, the kids and us had fun dancing amongst the trees with the disco balls and music! Definitely worth a visit next year or keeping your eye in the activities throughout the year!
P. E.
We've been to Saltram several times over the years but this was the first time we have been around the gardens. Luckily the weather was perfect and we were blown away by the beauty and peace of the place. The gardens are also child friendly with space for games. I would have given five stars but the prices in the cafe and shop are so exclusive that I feel the NT has lost its way in encouraging ordinary working people to visit. This place is a gem, so close to a busy city but peaceful - just take your own picnic!
m. b.
Love this place so many beautiful walks around the estate the inside of the house is fascinating and full of history the orangery garden is a delight and the tearoom is very friendly scrumptious food and all served on delicate china
R. C.
Excellent Christmas decorations. Staff/volunteers have worked very hard. Lovely illuminated gardens from tea time onwards. Great place to visit at other times of year too. Good restaurant area.
D. B.
The house is good but hard to see as kept dark for obvious reasons, tour guides are knowledgeable, good to find out about local area. Cafe is not to bad, a bit pricey and parking at £3 a shot not good. The walk around the park is nice and just take your time.
A. D.
Just before visiting this place, I decided to sign up as a yearly member for the National Trust. The entrance cost £10 and the yearly membership was £30, so I can now come here as many times as I like. All the staff at work very professional and had a passion for the history of the place. The Gardens were fun to walk around and I will be coming here again.
M. T.
Beautiful period National Trust property with plenty of grounds to explore. Great for bird watching.
M. G.
Fantastic look back at our history.... well worth a visit.
K. H.
Lovely house and garden didn't manage to see all the grounds and the upstairs we will go again next time in the area. Staff were very knowledgeable
S. P.
Beautiful house with good tour, nice little garden with extensive parklands
A. G. T.
I visited on the only sunny day of the week and had a very pleasant walk round the garden followed by a traditional cream tea - nice ! Sadly, due to Covid-19, the house was closed. I will certainly visit again.
B. R.
Lovely walks, cycle routes and scenery. Coffee kiosk, cafe, playgrounds, picnic benches and wildlife.
T. B.
Great place to visit. Lovely duck pond on going in. Nice restaurant and tea room, not too pricey. Lots if space to run around in. House is lovely, although restoration going on in parts so couldn't see amazing chandeliers in ballroom. Staff very knowledgeable. Will go back in December as they have gorgeous themed setting in house
P.
First time we've been here at Christmas. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the house decorated with beautiful Christmas trees and lights, but the highlight for us was when it got dark and the gardens became illuminated. Totally magical experience. Thank you to all the volunteers who work so hard to make it so special for the visitors.
D. R. H.
Brilliant house with and incredible interior. Especially magical at Christmas time.
A. G.
Not one of the Trust's finer properties, but lovely gardens and a pleasant place for an afternoon stroll. Good outdoor kids play area. And the cafe is the usual NT offering... good quality that almost justifies the high prices!
A. B.
Massive place. Lovely walks and places to explore for the kids. Shops, restaurants and Saltram House itself to wander around too. One not to be missed.
P. H.
Went when they lit up the House with Christmas decorations and lit the garden with coloured lights. The house was spectacular, gorgeously decorated. But access was only downstairs. The gardens led you on a path to the folly and return via the main footpath. Some lights were out on the main path which was a tad disappointing. I have been here in the summer and it's worth returning to see the upstairs and appreciate the beauty of the gardens in the height of the summer.
S. S.
Lovely place to take the kids on a Sunday or walk the dogs if you have them. There is a children's park and a tea room if you want to stop for refreshments or lunch. Occasionally they will have a market within the grounds that typically sell hand crafted items.
S. R.
Always brilliant for a nice walk around the grounds, or inside the garden. We love the different trails they have during the year. Parking is £3 if you are not a NT member
N. E.
Great walk and a good place to take some photos!
K. P.
Great place to visit, long walks and lovely walled garden. The house was superb with original furniture and paintings.
K. m.
Love this place it's wonderful the food is lovely the scenery is lovely the garden is beautiful
H. C.
I enjoyed this as one of the free open days with my mum (who is a member, saving me the £3 parking fee). Like most NT properties, I begrudge spending a large entry fee until I know whether it is worth it. I wouldn't mind paying a small entry fee and giving a donation based on how long I spend there and how much I enjoyed my visit. The staff/volunteers were excellent, and this was a nice way to spend an hour or two.
A. M.
Lovely building and gardens
