Reviews of Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP)
A. J. L.
TRP in Pymouth is an outstandingly arena for shows and performers. There are the Stalls and 3 Circle tier levels, Lower, Middle and Upper. Full capacity is 3,500. Admittedly the seats in the Stalks are somewhat cramped but not unduly. Whilst in the 3 Circle levels, which have small safety barriers for obvious reasons. Giving more leg room. Also, there are mini binoculars for hire for £1 on the Upper Circle seats if you should desire to use them. There is capacity for any disability to watch shows/performers at various locations in the Stalls section, or at the side of the front rows. The Emergency exits are readily visible with staff ALWAYS visible and at hand if needed. Sometimes photography is NOT allowed. So don't try to be clever. You WILL be spotted and stopped from breaching the performers/ shows copyright rights.

Awesome show, tonight. Joe Pasquale knows how to knock out a panto, alright! Staff were exceptionally helpful, friendly and polite. Shows are NOT socially distanced, so please be aware of that fact before you book. Seats could be a little wider, so if you're bigger built, try an aisle seat or the arm rests might dig in slightly. Otherwise, fantastic, clean good atmosphere, all at a decent price.

I think the theatre royal is absolutely excellent. It's a well laid out theatre with really no bad seats on any of the three levels. They also always have a good range of shows on (I think in part because of TR2 building the sets and getting the shows trained ready for going on tour or to London). All in all an excellent theatre and well worth going to watch a show there.
P. G.
This venue never lets you down, virtually every seat gives you a good view of the stage, it’s intimate yet grand, plenty of facilities, helpful and polite staff. I am lucky enough to have this venue on my doorstep but I would equally be happy if I had to travel some distance. Plenty of nearby parking. Theatre Royal Plymouth simply ticks all the boxes.
j. m.
The show was good but I find this venue difficult. No bar available on our level and with lots of people to serve, it was slightly manic. The lift is tiny and not really fit for the venue size. A lovely evening though.

I went in to the drum theatre to watch "the man who wanted to be a penguin" and it was fantastic, all the children were laughing and joining in and was certainly a fun and entertaining 5* performance.
Downside was no social distance bit that was all. Disabled toilets available with a close carpark nearby, refreshments were on offer on the lower floor and a warm welcome when we arrived and show to our seat with a booster seat provided for my daughter. Absolutely fantastic performance and service 👏
L. B.
A wonderful experience and well worth the wait. The performance was a good adaptation of the film 9 to 5 and hilariously funny in places. We can't wait to attend the theatre Royal again, to enjoy another performance. The theatre staff were very helpful and directive, in the strange world of COVID that we find ourselves living in.
D. W.
Always a good show. Generally good view of the stage and a pleasant experience regardless of where you sit. Staff are very friendly and the gin is on I've at the interval. Good times all round!
t. j.
Me, my wife and eldest daughter went to watch footloose at the Theatre Royal. What a brilliant way to spend a Saturday afternoon watching a brilliant display of how to perform and entertain your audience. 👏👏👏 well done.
I. S.
Brilliant show the family went along with friends as well. We were very entertained by the whole experience. Aladdin was a good night out for all of us.
M. R.
Amazing performance.
I went to see 9 to 5. It completely blew me away. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was hilarious. The singers/actors were fantastic. I would highly recommend it,
The theatre itself made me feel safe and comfortable , even in these difficult times
It made me feel that life can feel more like the old normal.. Thankyou.
A. B.
We attended the 11th January matinee and were sat near approx 80 primary school children who enjoyed the slapstick etc. Unfortunately they had to wear ear defenders because the sound was so loud.
We couldn't on many occasions hear the dialogue. Hopefully the person responsible for the level of bass needs to sit in the auditorium.
We were impressed by the costumes and scenery.
What happened to the wedding as it appeared be just everyone on stage for the end to the show.
We also felt it was a very short panto.
K.
Brilliant pantomime ..masks worn by the majority .I felt my family were safely cared for as far as the theatre could do x well done ..so glad to see live shows getting some support
B. E.
We went to see NHS the musical which was great. They did a fantastic job and were all very talented.
V. B.
Really easy to book tickets online and no waiting on arrival. Drinks were a little pricey. Staff were very friendly and there was a really pleasant atmosphere.
i. s.
Lovely theatre with helpful staff but very poor on ensuring people adhered to covid advice. At the end of the Aladin performance about 40% of the audience did not wear a mask. Not good.
J. G.
The BEST theatre in the cultural desert of the Southwest! Big enough to cater for huge West End shows, opening nights for nationwide tours, a wide and varied selection of events. Supports Youth theatre and offers many courses. Great coffee and food. The best, most helpful and welcoming, staff in all departments. A huge round of applause for the Theatre Royal and for all who sail in her!
T. W.
I love visiting the Theatre Royal, the staff are always lovely, friendly, and couldn't be more helpful. There's a great range of shows for all tastes and we're very lucky to have TRP here, it's a fantastic venue and attracts some excellent shows. The same can't always be said for the guests at the theatre. Covid notwithstanding, if you've got a honking cough, stay at home. Nobody wants to miss the actor's dialog while you hack your guts up. Yuck. Also, time to ban bags of crisps and sweets? A ban shouldn't be needed, it should just be common courtesy not to bring noisy packets with you but sadly we seem to have a decreasing sense of common courtesy and sometimes it's like sitting inside a crisp packet trying to listen to the performers.
C. H.
Well organised and comfortable. Only grip is drinks and seats are expensive for a night out. Could go away for s few days for what it cost for one night at the theater for me and hubby
S. C.
Comfortable, spacious seats with excellent view. Felt very covid safe and great to be back in the theatre again enjoying musical theatre
K. H.
The theatre staff were great, helped us to our seats. Parking easy to access although tricky to find! Show was brilliant. Visiting again in February!
C. r.
Very welcoming. Covid safe and spotlessly clean. Staff are lovely and a serene pleasant experience. Lyric stage is real grand, in the Lab and Drum shows your almost on stage with the performance.
M. B.
An excellent show - White Christmas. So energetic, good singing. Outstanding costumes and a cast of more than 30. A long standing ovation.
A. B.
We have just watched Grease ..it was really good!!very talented cast and we loved all of the songs!!fantastic night!!and Peter Andre was a fantastic part of the cast!!lots of fun!!
T. W.
Went to see Mamma Mia last Friday, it was an absolutely brilliant show. We had a good view of the stage and the seats very very comfortable
D. P.
Only ever been to TRP a couple of times in my adult life and each time has been an absolute pleasure. It could do with a little TLC but that takes nothing away from the productions that are there. Staff are helpful, friendly and up for a bit of banter. Thanks for another awesome experience
j. m.
Pantomime was good for kids if you like pooh and accidentally bumping and hitting people with kitchen ware. My 3 year old was nervous until the I intermission. My 7 year old love it and was screaming and jumping about she had so much fun!
S. B.
Went to the pantomime which was very enjoyable and the theatre was well organised and functioned very smoothly! We found our seats quickly with the help and didn't queue too long for refreshments!
C. H.
Fantastic family fun filled performance, can't beat the Christmas panto to get you in the festive spirit. Great venue, well managed with restrictions in place, lovely evening had by all!
A. H.
We came down on the 19th January to watch Mamma Mia for our daughters birthday. Our daughter is in a wheelchair and we all had a lovely evening and we were looked after by a member of staff called Donna. We would like to thank Donna for her help through the evening for keeping a eye out for our daughter to make sure she was ok.
J. B.
Excellent, as a wheelchair user I never thought I could go to the theatre , but I went to see Mammi Mia (in my wheelchair) very easy access to everything , my daughter sat next to me in the upper circle , there was plenty of room for my wheelchair , I shall certainly be returning again and again , thank you to the wonderful staff 😊 I had an amazing evening thank you , thank you , thank you 😊
M. D.
We went to The Drum last night to see The Great Gatsby and we're incredibly impressed by the performance of the two actors. Both ladies were so versatile, brilliant actors with amazing timing and hymour.. Amazing to be back in the theatre again.
L.
Had an excellent experience from booking to the show itself. Easy to find and good parking nearby.
The e-ticket option is ideal as you have the tickets right on your phone. The staff were very covid aware and the theatre was very clean. There were no options to buy beverages but water was available.
The staff were very friendly and helpful
J. C.
Mama Mia, what a show, absolutely loved it....well done everyone ❤
K. D.
Had a great evening watching Mamma Mia! Love going to the Theatre. All straight forward from start to finish😁
M. C.
We haven't visited TRP for a while, but it was lovely to be back. Can't wait to book more shows to watch with family.
S.
Watched Blues Brothers, on arrival the staff were friendly and efficient and we were promptly shown to our seats. These were comfortable with enough room and the slight terracing means our view was unobstructed. The show was excellent, delivered by a relatively small cast.
The bar wasn't open in the interval for safety reasons in the current covid situation, but water jugs and plastic cups were provided for refreshment.
The acting was excellent as was the singing and narration which were delivered crisply by the sound system. The theatre was over 1/2 full and the cast received a standing ovation from almost the whole audience.
M. R.
Brilliant show, staff friendly and very helpful. Would like to have an empty chair between parties of people and for people to wear masks in the theatre. Will be going again
E. L.
fantastic show, everyone was 👏 brilliant,Joe u r amonkey making all the cast laugh as much as the audience, you have something special, dont ever stop doing it xxxx love to u all xxxx
M. R.
Wonderful theatre with great range of performances. We've recently seen Hairspray and Six here and loved both. Comfortable seats with good view, great sound quality and a fantastic atmosphere. It's SO good to be back!
S. C.
Had a great time watching 9 til 5. The seating where we were was comfortable with plenty of leg room and nobody sat within 3 metres or more
S. W.
Wonderful night out as always..funny cast brilliant acting..just disappointed that people don't adhere to the rules..(wear your mask through the performance)and they wonder why Covid is spreading....
A. L.
Great time this afternoon watching 9 to 5. So great to laugh out loud. We've really missed live theatre. Felt very safe with the measures in place too.
L. S.
lovely theatre polite and helpful staff, fantastic show, all your hard work is laying off
K. H.
A laugh a minute. Absolutely marvellous. Loved the script. Colourful, funny and worth every penny. Thank you and merry 🎄
M. I.
My first time going to watch mama mia brilliant show and night my only grumble the thetre seats are uncomfortable need a bit more padding but apart from that it was a awesome night
K. G.
if you get out the seat make sure you hold your phone i didnt it fell down the seat and smashed. i was so upset and they let me go into a quiet room to calm down
L. S. D. (. S. D.
ive always enjoyed the theatre and to see a production of Matthew bournes nutcracker was a delight, staff were lovely and very helpful, the liturature was informative and helpful and the venue was very well maintained and presented. most importantly, it was a fantastic show, thank you both to The New Directions company and theatre royal i had an amazing evening.
T. H.
Great to be back in the theatre, couldn't believe we were able to get tickets for Hairspray at such short notice
A. W.
Lovely little theatre, only has access from either end of the rows so you have to stand up quite a bit if people want to leave but if you like your theatres you won't mind 🙃 views of the stage are good all round meaning you don't have to spend a silly amount for a good seat, all round good experience
A. L.
Fantastic show, brilliant social distancing and staff that go above and beyond by changing my seat to one where I could see. Cannot thank them or the cast enough for a great afternoon out and it was hubby's first ever panto and he's nearly 70!
A. C.
Wonderful. Child friendly funny entertainment with lovely staff, clean seats with great views of the stage
D. H.
Watched mama Mia with my brother Ben we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves
The staff were all friendly and happy to help
Lovely experience
m. w.
Everyone at the Theatre Royal working back stage, front of house or performing pulled together to ensure that the panto could go on safely. Really enjoyed our visit. Will come again
A. R.
Always enjoy coming to this theatre, enough legroom is important, if like me you are just over six feet tall. Only thing I didn't understand was with the bookoffice open you not allowed to use it to book other shows in support of the theatre. Told booking other performances could only be done online or by phone.
C.
Very lovely and friendly staff, saw an absolutely wonderful performance of NHS The Musical. I laughed, I cried. Shame there was no interval ice creams or bar, but otherwise a fantastic evening out.
S. G.
Mama Mia. and thats what it was ! The musical came alive fron the start.Familiar songs by Abba toe tapping all evening .
FABulous performance.
E. H.
We saw Six, which was excellent. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Even though we were in the gods, we had a brilliant view. The seats were comfortable. There were long queues for the ladies, but that is not unusual. It is a shame they are not selling drinks and snacks at the moment. A really good evening though, with good organisation.
G. G.
Went to see an interactive performance, for children, of 'The Nutcracker' by The Birmingham Royal Ballet - Friday 29th. Superb, and totally enthralling for children, and the adults. Lovely venue with friendly and helpful staff.
L. M.
Amazing venue with really good viewing thanks to the position of the seating. Really good sound and acoustics. The staff were very helpful, friendly and polite.
A. P.
Lovely helpful staff. Perfectly good venue for opera. The seats are very small and uncomfortable, so it's a little difficult to sit through longer performances.
J. G.
Lovely to be back in TRP which was full of attentive, helpful staff. Mamma Mia terrific and everyone left the theatre smiling!
D. C.
Another fantastic evening at the theatre. A shame the bars and food outlets are still closed, but the staff and procedures, along with the ticketing system was great. Rocky Horror was awesome.e as always.
B. S.
The Theatre Royal in Plymouth is an brilliant theatre,in a previous life I visited this theatre numerous times whilst on tour,I was always amazed by the professionalism of the management and staff, especially the stage manager and stage crew!
The shows that visit here are testiment to this, long live live theatre!
M. S.
Fantastic staff. Safe environment. Good parking. And a show feel good in these gloomy times
M. S.
Wonderful visit, so good to be in the Theatre after 2 years
r. j.
Very busy at the entrance all the way to the theatre door, especially at the end when there was a long queue for merchandise. Maybe a new system or redesign of the area is needed. Saying that, it was great to be back, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Ever grateful to have these top shows come all the way down to Plymouth.
A. M.
Brilliant pantomime "Aladdin" starring Joe Pasquale. Lots of laughs for children ... and adults too :)
R. “. i. t. s. G.
Having not been to a show at the Theatre Royal for a number of years, I wasn't sure what to expect but the overall experience was a very pleasurable one. The show, An Inspector Calls, was very enjoyable and although we were seated quite high up the view and acoustics were good. Staff were efficient and pleasant. Altogether a good evening out.
P. B.
Great venue, very well organised. Fantastic show (Mamma Mia).
A. W.
Still the same great service as it was before the pandemic. Amazing atmosphere and super welcoming staff who go the extra mile to help make your experience the best it can be
G. B.
Great to get back in TO and amazing to see NDT2 again. Fabulous performance.

Saw the Nutcracker ,brilliant show, costumes were beautiful, you don't realise your watching a ballet ,you get caught up in the storey ,highly recommend.
B. K.
Very enjoyable went to see lion witch and wardrobe.
A bit pricey for tickets.

Well organized venue with good views from all seats
A. H.
First time seeing a show here. Absolutely fantastic, staff friendly and helpful. We will be back
B. O.
It's a lovely theatre with comfortable seats and good legroom. I saw the Aladin Panto which was excellent.
p.
Loved the show .. White Christmas 🎄
M. H.
Since my first review the TRP has only gone up in my estimation. Absolutely the most wonderful and exciting theatre in the area.
J. F.
Really great theatre, big enough to get a lot of the big shows, small enough that you can see the stage from any seat.
G. P.
Amazing theatre. I was there working for 7weeks in the Drum with Stuff and Nonsense show ‘The Enormous Turnip’ and wow what a place. Amazing staff on EVERY level from the cleaners, to technical, to ushers to management; everyone was lovely and welcoming. They have a great, varied and quite star studded programme of things and work with artists on every level. Amazing place. Long may it continue. Photos of the Drum theatre and dressing room B31! Love the people that make this place run!
L. C.
Love the theatre but we weren't spaced out enough.
R. E.
Wonderful show. I am 84 and this show was like a tonic to me. Thank you.
d. r.
A great afternoon entertainment watching 9-5 the musical, we thoroughly enjoyed it.
A. I.
We were a bit disappointed on arrival to find we couldn't buy a drink or sweets as nothing was on offer. On the plus side they did put out water. The show was very good but didn't think Peter Andre was up to much .
B. T.
Mama Mia absolutely fabulous show with everyone and I mean everyone in the audience giving a standing ovation.
a. t.
Fantastic show and staff are fantastic as well totally worth going to watch a show there
S. H.
Had a lovely time watching Aladdin
r. h.
Been going there for a few years now. Only for the pantos. Great theatre.
d. w.
Watched Aladdin, which was amazing. Masks worn at the moment but wasn't too hot in the theatre.
V. B.
Saw Mamma Mia this afternoon.
Brilliant. All of the cast were excellent 🌟 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
L.
Great theatre. Always good performances in both the main theatre and the Drum. Nice place to go for a coffee during the day too. Also, now that "The messenger" is out the front, gives you something to look at. It is pretty spectacular, and let's face it, better than a buss stop.
Saw cirque baserk here last, it was pretty awesome.
M. S.
Very modern theatre. Good view from either stalls or circle as neither that far from the stage. Still Covid measures so no alcohol or ice creams. Not a problem for us.
M. D.
Watch this years pantomime, great theatre, always welcoming and friendly.
D. B.
I come here as often as possible. They do great theatre. Unfortunately, they do terrible theatre seating. I _can't_ sit through a whole play in any seat with a decent sightline because there's not enough room for my legs
J. E.
The show Mama Mia was fantastic and the assistants were so kind and helpful.
G. C.
Watching last nights Blood Brothers production was handled well. My mother in law wanted to leave during the interval. She is 82 years of age and was well cared for by a guy called Matt. She couldn’t speak highly enough of him. The theatre Royal staff are always lovely.
D. M.
Very good place to see a live show. Looking forward to going back again.
M. M.
Brilliant performance! Wonderful atmosphere, great for the whole family. Clean seating area and bathrooms, although enquire as to wheelchairs access and/or disability bathrooms. Staff were friendly and the café makes getting a quick bite to eat convenient. There is a car park just behind the Theatre as well.
J. C.
Loved the show,White Christmas, wonderful acting the company work so hard
E. Y.
Ok so the performance we went to see was good but my God was it hot in there. No air con and a packed auditorium meant it was extremely hot. It made the whole experience rather uncomfortable. However my son is autistic and when I rang for the tickets handler was very sensitive and helpful so top marks for that.
K. S.
Aladdin was amazing!!! Well worth the money!! Toilet man alone was worth the money 😂
S. C.
Fantastic theatre that surpasses most of London's West end venues.
Professional and helpful staff who direct you if required. The theatre has Covid precautions in action, which we didn't find invasisive.
The only drawback was no programs available.
C. G.
Attended the afternoon performance of Bloodbrothers yesterday 18th August. I had promised my 17 year old grandson, Alex, that I would take him to a performance, when I was helping him to study Bloodbrothers for his Literary GCSE 2 years ago. Due to covid this was the first opportunity. What a joy. The actors were phenomenal. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. If crying with emotion can be classed as enjoying ourselves. Even though we both knew the dialogue from cover to cover we were glued to the performances. They deserved their standing ovations. Thank you all.
C. H.
Nice clean theatre. Loads of seating, friendly staff. Found seats quick and easy. Show was great. Great night had by all.
P. W.
Always had a great experience at this theatre, and my resent visit was just as good, In the current climate the staff are all going that extra mile to make the theatre as clean and safe as can be,
J. A.
Brilliant family evening with my daughter's 16,12 watching Cinderella. All of us crying with laughter from start to finish.Cant praise Brian Connelly highly enough.Best panto in a long time.
L. C.
Staff were organised to help us scan tickets and find our seats. The building was clean. Only water was available to drink this session.
J. B.
Good place to see a show. Nice building and comfortable seating. Within 2 minute walk of multi storey car park
m. g.
Good panto kids loved it. Nice to see the staff making people keep their masks on.
L. B.
A trip to TRP is always fab! Staff are polite and friendly. Always ready to help with a smile.
Theatre and amenities are always clean and well maintained.
T. C.
Brilliant theatre
Good location.
Well run and very enjoyable experience
S. V.
Beautiful shows, performance excellent presentation.
T. B.
Great show (RHPS) but not sure about seating.
Not sure what they could. Still uncomfortable as was almost capacity and almost no one with masks.
L. F.
Electronic ticket worked perfectly, virtually no queue, great theatre, good ventilation/air conditioning with comfortable seats. Parking right next to the theatre.
S. P.
The shows at the Drum are generally excellent.
K. S.
New seats, quite nice environment.
A little busy at the moment, limited self spacing, but not in seats.
Shows are a good quality
M. P.
We felt it was a very covid safe environment, the staff were great and the disinfecting of public surfaces was good to see. However, on the website it stated that no drinks were to be taken in, this clearly wasn't adhered to by some. Going without a drink for 3.5 hours was not a pleasant experience, particularly for a person with kidney problems. This needs to be addressed. We did enjoy the show, a welcome return to Plymouth - well done.
R. K.
Cramped seats, extortionately priced wine. Good job the performance was second to none.
J. D.
Went to see Horrible Histories Barmy Britain with the kids. Customer safety was taken very seriously by the theatre - good social distancing in the theatre itself, temperature checks at the door etc. Would thoroughly recommend!
j. p.
some amazing productions come here but it is a little pricey. still the service is excellent!
l. h.
Went to watch pantomime. It was hilarious. Lovely place very organised
l. s.
Great performance of Robinson Crusoe. Well done for providing us with holiday cheer and coming back from the pandemic stronger!
D. B.
I enjoyed my first live performance of the ballet since lockdown. A very enjoyable Cinderella. Well organized social distancing,, thank you.
R. R.
Two of the best seats in the house meant we had a brilliant view of the stage tonight! The sets, stage and costume were bright, glittery (!) and made to a very high standard.
The panto was fast-paced and funny filled with plenty of innuendo, toilet-humour and opportunity for audience interaction (oh yes there was🤣😂). The acrobats were impressive and the cast were all very professional.
Checking in was slick - no need for paper tickets. Everyone (except kids) was wearing a mask and even though it was a packed house, it felt safe. Interval arrangements were well organised and all the staff were proactive and helpful. Overall it was a superb evening to get me in the festive mood.
The only thing that spoiled my evening was having my chair kicked by the person behind for 2 hours. 🤬
R. J.
Love this theatre, great views with terrific performances. Lots of great places to eat and drink nearby.
E. B.
Beautiful theatre. Modern and spacious. Saw hairspray UK Tour which was absolutely brilliant. Great to see theatre back after all this time!
c. c.
Felt very safe and it was so nice to be able to do something normal again. Great show too! Grease!!
K. K.
Had a great time watching Derren Brown. Shame the bar was closed but free water supplied. No big deal though still had a great night.
P. H.
Had a brilliant trip to see the panto, Aladdin, very enjoyable
P. E.
Fantastic night, had a couple of drinks and staff were very helpful.
P. W.
First theatre trip since lockdown eased. Temperatures taken on entering. Seating arranged to keep people apart. We were warned that it might be quite cool, as extra ventilation was in use. The play was a comedy retelling of The Three Musketeers, with a cast of only Four. This necessitated many costume changes. It proceeded at a good pace, with some good lines and good bits of "business". Not to everyone's taste, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. There was one interval which was unexpected. Sadly no ice cream. Next time hopefully.
D. S.
Fantastic performances from NDT2 last night
W. S.
Has the least leg room and most uncomfortable of seats of any theatre I've ever been to.
Had bad leg cramps half way through Blood Brothers
C. C.
Lovely theatre, staff helpful and masked, great show - would highly recommend show and theatre!
C. S.
Amazing went to see body guard , we sat very top (j) but could see all, tip try and get seats in the middle not to the side of the stage, amazing show amazing scenery
M. M.
Aladdin. Excellent. From beginning to the end enjoyed every minute of it
a. l.
Very safe. Great, helpful staff. Wonderful to be able to access this great theatre again after 10 months. The pantomime was excellent. Very funny. Will go again. Looking forward to the ballet visiting.
B. B.
Great place all be it a little small for the size of the city. The leg room and general room you have for your seat is quite comfy ! Compared to the seating in the excellent Vue cinema complex.
J. T.
Nice enough theatre, big with no bad views.
But don't park in its carpark as everyone piles out same time and ticket machines are broken. Took us 1hr to exit the carpark!
D. S.
Worth going shows are excellent depending what you want to watch car park is pay and display next to theatre
J. M.
Saw Derren Brown. Was amazing. No bag checks no bar no selling food or drinks at all. In and out was fast and smooth.
L. C.
Love going to this Theatre. Went to see Grease The Musical with Peter Andre it was brilliant
C. T.
Great theatre. Felt a bit weird not having refreshments but obviously that will change when Covid is through! Easy parking in the multistorey car park behind. You can pre-pay so you're not having to join a queue after the show.
V. J.
1st time back after lockdown! Staff really courteous and friendly. Showed us exactly where to go, put us at ease. Was a bit nervous but, had a fantastic time, can't wait to come back!
s. c.
Saw Mama Mia.
Just what was needed..a real, feelgood way to spend an afternoon with my daughter and granddaughter.
S. G.
Lovely theatre with great views of the stage from every seat.
Saw Matilda with my daughter and grandaughter-every bit as professional as the West End production but with a more intimate setting.
M. C.
Brilliant. Went to see NHS the musical. Fantastic experience
k. c.
Very lovely place to go and see a musical (which we did!) Could of done with a bit more leg room, but all in all... A very pleasant outing!👌🏽
S.
Great venue, Mamma Mia was fantastic
S. W.
Just seen Derren brown, excellent theatre very good facilities, very well adapted for disabled people.
T. S.
Friendly place, we did a midweek evening performance and there was parking just outside.
J. E.
Had a great time at the panto on Tuesday 22nd Dec afternoon performance. Really lovely to just laugh and the cast were brilliant. A big thank you to Connor McIntyre who was outside stage door later and very happy to chat and have photos, what a nice man. And Andy Ford you are fantastic! Thank you one and all who made it happen this year.
M. b.
Wasn't allowed to take photos or a short video of grease the musical, even without the flash on the camera, very disappointed as paid good money to go and watch the show
S. C.
Watched Mamma Mia, absolutely fantastic show
s. j.
Brilliant night, really enjoyed the whole experience
P. D.
Watching any show or musical here is an absolute joy, when my husband and I book tickets we usually book a table the food is beautiful, the staff helpful. Will always go back
M. H.
Firstly, so amazing to have the theatre back open due to the great efforts of staff to make covid secure and the National Lottery for contributing with grants so the performances are financially viable. Us as a family of 4 went to watch Robinson Crusoe, the e-ticket purchase was simple and the email stated to arrive 30 minutes early as temperature checks were being done. Arrived as advised and queued, which moved very quick. Toilets are clean and aerated. Great start.
Now the seating is well segregated so that nobody is in close proximity, great for my seat kicking 4 year old! You could almost feel the emotion in the arena as the performance started. All actors were amazing, Les Dennis and Andy Ford were stand outs for me, but all were incredible...and so passionate. A couple of hiccups which were well improvised. Hysterical. My 4 year old loved it because of the acrobatics, singing and bangs, my 11 year old enjoyed the jokes. Both my partner and I enjoyed the whole thing. A great experience! Well done.
A touching tribute at the end regarding a tough year on the industry. We all hope this is the turning point for theatres around the country.
R. P.
Go at least 4/5 times a year as we live i in penzance Cornwall so its a real treat always a fantastic evening fabulous shows, wonderful place and friendly staff
L. M.
First show after Covid closure. Was amazing.
Show was fantastic, staff were very helpful and felt safe.
A great night out.
J. P.
Very modern theatre, saw Derren Brown show which was amazing.
A. S.
Great to be in a live audience again. Bring back theatre better. Loved it tonight together with my 5yo granddaughter
P.
World class theatre watched a great show real good view to
M. H.
Mamma mia show was the best yet
M. T.
Absolutely brilliant very funny recommend to go and see it
D. M.
Mama Mia and theatre experience for me was fabulous
K. D.
Very well organised with easy access in and out. Spacious seating was great and Hairspray was absolutely fantastic! Thank you for a great evening 😊
S. T.
Great place to go and see a show, everytime is just so exciting
S. R.
The venue is easy to get to, accessible and all staff very friendly and helpful. I think no matter where you sit in the theatre you'll have a good view. I especially like sitting in the stalls as I'm almost 6ft it has great legroom! The seats are also comfortable.
Located in the centre of town there's lots of parking, transport links and restaurants nearby.
The team there do a great job of securing fantastic shows at the venue, a good mixture of mainstream musicals and quirky plays. Would love to see more plays come down to The Lyric but not sure whether any from the West End tour?
I love the Theatre Royal in Plymouth and would usually give it a 5 star review, however, it's due to some audience members that I can't....
Recently I feel that many people in the audience have come in and lost the respect and etiquette of the theatre - lots of food bags rustling, A LOT of alcohol drinking and thus disruptive behaviour. I probably sound snobby but I always feel going to the theatre should be an occasion to dress up smart and be there to enjoy the show - not turn up and get as drunk as possible and disturb the actors and fellow audience members - this mainly seems applicable at musicals... Haven't experienced this at the ballets or plays.
Update - recently visited venue, staff had resumed bag searches and confiscation of alcohol being brought in seemed to be taking place.
K. M.
Lovely theatre with a great variety of shows. Very accessible and accommodating for disabled people.
S. T.
second time we have been since I was a kid. first mama Mia which was amazing!! and then grease. would recommend for kids 6yrs and up looking forward to Christmas too!
A. C.
Performance of 7 Fingers was absolutely mesmerizing. TR is a good place with friendly staff
a. r.
Beautiful yet accessible venue
m. w.
Loved the Birmingham ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet.
M. I.
Saw Blood Brothers on Friday. Best show I have ever seen. No bars yet or food.
R. C.
Been going here since I was a child always nice to visit for a show
K. S. (.
Excellent show, great organisation of people attending. Thank you.
P. M.
Always guaranteed value for money shows. Majority of staff really pleasant and well mannered. Not so with staff around where we sat. Obnoxious and rude toward people around .Not explaining but sounded like order. One man told sit down and wait for safety curtain to come down.no manners. Not impressed. This theatre has always been very good but the attitude of some staff lets it down . Show was brilliant
P. B.
Seen Cinderella tonight with billy Connolly absolutely amazing well worth it and very funny
M. W.
Just been to the Panto here! A great social distanced production. I have been to many productions at the Theatre Royal. Its a lovely venue showing a wide variety of shows and productions. In these very difficult times all the staff, actors, dancers and musicians put on a wonderful pantomine. We had a great night, it was lovely to laugh so much. We are lucky to have such a brilliant theatre in Plymouth.
A. C. A. S. W. U. T. W.
A great safe venue to watch WorldWide standard shows. Looking forward to get there again soon
A. F.
Great as always. Cast made a real effort even though the audience was basically empty. It still felt welcoming and the kids loved the panto
A. A.
A fantastic jewel in Plymouths Crown 👑, the city wouldn't be the same without it.
J. T.
Been twice in the last 2 months and had a great time both times!
Quality entertainment- may look expensive but worth every penny!
Drinks at the bar are not too bad of a price but the wait can be a bit long if its an interval.
Chairs comfy & a good choice of seating.
Staff allways friendly & pleasant - nothing too much trouble for them.
The kids want to come again to see something else!
a. s.
I attend a few times a year. My only complaint is the lack of leg room
C. A. G.
Although I missed the performance due to sudden illness, the staff were fantastic there and looked after me very well
g. w.
Just had a fantastic night watching white Christmas.
C. C.
We were lucky enough to visit the day before we went into lock down and the safety measures they had in place was ok great! Me and my family really enjoyed it, the staff and actor's were amazing.
H. W.
Beautiful theatre, I have been there many times and the plays are top notch! Of course, the snacks are somewhat overpriced, but that is to be expected. The staff are lovely and there are plenty of loos (though I would recommend going down to the ones by reception during the interval if you want to avoid queues)
M. M.
Can't fault the theatre, or the staff on the ticket counter, very helpful, and the bar staff very polite.
But some of the staff need some educating on manners on the way they react with the audience and not forgetting the staff selling ice cream I did not hear one please or thank you. A great performance, but was slightly marred by the action by these few.
M. M.
Wonderful experience seeing Mama Mia!
A.
There's such a nice atmosphere around the entire building. The food is always great, and I watch the pantomime every new year and each year it never fails to make me leave without a smile. Also, the seats are really comfortable!
D. B.
Great theatre, good views from pretty much any seat. If you are seeing a children's show I would advise getting there early to be able to secure a booster seat as they had run out by the time we took our seats. Good facilities and lovely staff.
K. L.
Very well organised. Clean. Friendly staff. The show we watched was great and afterwards letting people out was also well organised.
a. r.
Benidorm was fantastic and the cast looked the same as they did on the TV series. A must see for a laugh all the way through.
S. C.
We went to see the pantomime. It was a fantastic performance. Great cast and wonderful dancers. The children were great. Lovely lot of leg room and wonderful ice cream. I did find it too loud but that's just my opinion. I enjoyed it and so did my mum and dad. There were a couple of jokes which kids wouldn't understand (and I wouldn't want them to) and I'm sure I didn't get a couple of jokes. It was fun!
M. S.
Some great shows but could do with a bit more seating while waiting.
S. G.
This is a beautiful venue. It has easy access and facilities for disabled people. Plenty of guest areas in which to relax, eat and drink. The restaurant is clean, nicely arranged with excellent service. We were served by Brontë, who was friendly and efficient. The rest of the staff appeared to be of the same quality
. The food was delicious and nicely presented. An excellent afternoon with helpful staff all round. Thank you.
S. B.
Very good panto, well done everyone 😁😁👍👍
D. H.
Lovely theatre with some fantastic productions
R. N.
Just seen SIX. Brilliant show, great atmosphere, so good to be in a crowd determined to enjoy to utmost.
D. “. D. C.
Went to see Al murray amazing atmosphere and friendly staff
S. w. 1.
Great night out. Very tight squeeze on seating but other then that good.
c. s.
My wife and I watched the Bodyguard last night, it was Fantastic, the performance and energy from the cast was amazing. It was easy to forget that we were in Plymouth's Theatre Royal, the stage and performance seemed so much bigger. Thank you for a great evening.
R. H.
Mama Mia was totally awesome 😍😍😁😁
J. C.
Great venue. The accessibility is phenomenal. I got given a loop so I could tune into the speakers with my hearing aid.
Shame about the subtitles! Would have been nice to have them working properly and readable for Carmen
t. w.
Had a brilliant time watching 'white christmas'.
G. R.
Went to see Calendar Girls. Booked the seats in person and was treated by friendly and caring staff. Was able to book a disabled chair space and a seated space on first floor. Access is using a lift which is easily accessible for chair and carer. Seats were great with a good view and cheap also. Can't fault the evening and getting out at the end was easy. The disabled facilities are very good and easily accessed. Would highly recommend.
C. G.
Well organised but the seats are not spaced well so you have absolutely no room to move your legs, even in the most expensive seats.
S. C.
Enjoy the theatre, find the high prices of the best shows and seats prohibitive however so a middling review as the opportunity to go due to their pricing is limited. For theatre lovers a tip if you are unaware, sometimes London plays are broadcast one night only to vue cinema, much cheaper making it more accessible.
k. p.
A great place with a wonderful selection of shows.
G. S.
Great place , friendly staff and there's always something good showing .
G. S.
Simply the best in the West.
The staff are so helpful and welcoming.
S. C.
We went to see Cinderella on Boxing day, it was absolutely fantastic, Brian Conley was so funny, especially when he got my Husband on stage! All the cast were so professional and the staff as always polite and helpful! Thank you for another amazing Panto!
S. O.
Amazing performance of Blood Brothers! Lovely staff and very well organised
P. B.
Great theatre, which hosts some of the best amateur and West End productions. The theatre is a good size to ensure a good view from any tier. There is a cafe on the ground floor, with a full restaurant upstairs. The food is great, with the ability to book desert and a drink for the interval.
N. H.
Seen so many shows here over the years including Xmas pantos when we were kids, adult humour shows, historical dramas, comedy, and never had a bad experience.
S. M. H.
The restaurant was great, lovely, friendly and helpful staff with tasty, well presented food. The ushers are always happy and courteous and Club Tropicana, the latest show we saw, was a fun, upbeat and uplifting feelgood show. We loved the sing along and dance finale at the end but the actors sang and performed brilliantly and we talked about it all the way home (50 minute journey).
Thank you Theatre Royal
G. S.
Great venue. Needs more toilets. Always an issue when you have 1320 people enjoying an intermission. Drum is nice with 175 seats. Not cheap but what theatre is? there are a lot of people involved.
C. S.
Nice meal in the restaurant before the show. Comfortable seating with good visibility wherever you sit. Staging was excellent. A pity the show The Bodyguard did not live up to the venue.
C. T.
Love this theatre! Although it's quite small compared to others I've been to the stage is a decent size. It's very clean and the layout is easy to navigate even with the huge crowds. The cakes, although not cheap was good.
The only problem I had is that they had completely ran out of programmes for closing night!
D. C.
A great mix of shows throughout the year. Box office staff are really helpful when it comes to selecting where to sit. The meals in the restaurant are very good. Finally the ushers are really helpful when guiding you to your seat. a great experience all round
J. M.
Great show great atmosphere
M. P.
Fantastic show tonight, staff as friendly and efficient as ever. I do think though the seating is long overdue for a refurb. Seats are small and uncomfortable and the legroom is awful, (and I'm only 5'8")
J. R.
Staff are so nice and helpful. Wonderful theatre.
s. m.
Watched rocky horror picture show it was amazing. Staff friendly.
J. S.
Wonderful to have a theatre on the doorstep, some top rated shows. Staff very helpful, great spaces for people who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility. The seats are pretty cramped if you're more than 5' 2".
C. W.
Enjoyed a pre theatre meal in their restaurant, and the staff couldn't be more helpful. Food was delicious too! Forgot our tickets, but ticket office couldn't be kinder and printed out new ones without any complaint. Excellent show too!
J. R.
Wonderful top quality theatre
M. A.
Clean, fairly reasonably priced drinks, friendly and fun staff. Also this is the first theatre I've been to where the seats are comfortable and you can rest your head back! We had a lovely evening. Made even better by the carpark not costing an arm and a leg.
j. c.
Great to be back in the theatre Royal again
m. r.
Now I'm not really a theatre person ,I very much enjoy the cinema to watch a film on a big screen ,,dont we all .
But I have to say I have been there earlier this afternoon to see the inspector calls and I was blown away by how it was done .
It was fantastic ,its a show that has a poignant powerful meaning I'm not telling you .
Recommend to all to go and see it..
S. S.
An excellent theatre. I went to see Macbeth with friends and the view was fantastic. I sat in the circle in the middle but it seemed like the view would be as good from anyway in the theatre. The stage was a good size and allowed for some great scenery. The staff were helpful and friendly and pointed me in the right direction when I needed it. There seemed to be adequate toilets as I didn't have to queue at all, even during the interval. Refreshments were good although the usual theatre high prices. All in all, a super venue.
K. R.
Saw a fantastic production. Nice modern theatre.
v. d.
Visited to see Still Alice. What a performance by Sharon Small and the rest of the cast. Had great seats thanks to my lovely daughter in law and the staff were most helpful. Can't wait to go again. Would thoroughly recommend this theatre.

Great theatre, friendly staff and comfortable seating. Drinks and food is expensive. but always ice cream at the interval which is reasonably at £2.50 per pot! Sound quality is fab and the seat tickets in the restricted view I would recommend as you can see 90% of the stage and it's much cheaper!
M. G.
A well priced selection of drinks, and a very polite and welcoming staff. I would not hesitate to book again knowing that however the show turned out, the theatre experience would be perfect. The only thing that could be improved in, is the card payments are registered against an odd provider name. Which needed a little research! :-)
H. O.
Brilliant good seats and good atmosphere
S. B.
Great night and great show . Rocky horror xxx
S. P.
I go here mainly for dance performances. All the staff are helpful. The only negatives: slow service in the foyer cafe; too few ladies' lavatories; the seat pads are getting a bit old and uncomfortable. I loved the performance I saw. I feel fortunate to have a theatre that such excellent productions and companies visit less thsn 30 miles from my house. I already have more tickets booked and will continue to visit. If not for the loos and seats it would have been five stars.
l. (.
Staff great! Panto great! Loos nice!
S. U.
Lots of good times at this theatre.
C. N.
I love this theatre, always clean and nice with friendly staff! They have a wide selection of productions on all year round and I love every show I have seen there! Recently watched Mathew Bourne’s Swan Lake which was absolutely beautiful and amazing, extremely talented dancers!
C. A.
War Horse was amazing & staff were friendly, but the actual theatre was cramped, didn't have enough toilets (3 cubicles meant I spent the entire interval in a queue) & we couldn't see the very very front of the stage.
Definitely worth going for the performance though!
J. b.
Les Miserables was absolutely amazing, cast , orchestra, set, costumes all fantastic. I saw this in London a few years ago but this was even better. The best show I've seen and I've seen a lot. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
L. C.
Visited The Drum to watch the Gingerbread Man. As always the Theatre was clean and tidy, staff were friendly and happy to help.
Although we have never sampled the café the food always looks nice.
The theatre is in a good location with plenty of nearby parking and eateries.
L. R.
We went to see Robinson crusoe awe the staff were exceptional as usual the cast were so pleased that people came please go they really do look after you its great one thing missing my granddaughter wanted polly cockles to have a wedding dress thats it tho well done everyone we loved it x
K. S.
I haven’t been in here in a while but from what I remember everything was very neat and tidy and the staff were friendly.
N. W.
One of the best theatres you'll find anywhere, I think. We've sat in every part to watch opera and dance and we've always had a good view and comfortable seats. The bars and restaurants are good too.
P. E.
Been to several musical shows here which have all been A1. We like the atmosphere, the place is modern and well presented. Service is pleasant and efficient. Parking is close by, as are places for a pre-show drink or meal if you don't want to eat at the theatre (where the food is good). Saw the Carole King story which was brilliant.
T. S.
Had a great time watching War Horse amazing show, first time at this Theatre sat in the stalls had great seats quite comfortable good leg room .Had a hot drink and yummy piece of cake good service and the price you expect to pay at this type of venue. Had clean Toilets. Would definitely Go back again x
j. g.
Great panto .alladin with joe pasqualie
C. I. N.
Had a meal in the restaurant before the show and this is definitely the way to go to the theatre. Your table is reserved for you to include the interval, when drinks and dessert will be waiting. The food was well cooked and tasty.
The theatre however..... Maybe I'm just a little too tall, but the dated seats had my knees aching long before the interval.
J. B.
Great panto, if a little bit different this year. Still plenty of laughs. Great social distancing controls too. Well done TRP. 😁
C. G.
We had a meal in the restaurant before the performance of The Importance of being Earnest. Our table was available from 17 .30 so we could have a leisurely meal. The menu offered a good choice and our meals were delicious. We could, if we wished, have had our puddings delivered to our table during the interval.
If course we enjoyed the play and the whole experience. Well done Theatre Royal.
J. H.
My partner and i saw The Motown Story last night. It was fantastic. The back drops wern't good but the music made up for it. The atmosphere was electric especially at the end. Everyone was stood up dancing. You wont be disappointed. Go and see it
R. M.
Went to watch the panto. Was fantastic
N. W.
Comfortable seating although the tiring could have been a little steeper to see over the person in front and the toilets were hard to find and up or down steeod. There was a disabled toilet but quite a question for this. I was offered a free to use audio enhancement system but neither my colleague or I could get this to work maybe it was not actually turned on. Not withstanding all of this it's a excellent venue and I thoroughly enjoyed the show I went to see
V. O.
Always friendly staff, great food, outstanding deserts, and great performances. Even when the shows are not to my liking {rarely}, the actors are extremely talented. Highly recommend this theater.
A. M.
Yesterday I was collecting a child from the theatre. The weather was horrendous when we got there. I had two more children with me and two large dogs. I sent the two children in and stood outside in the rain with the dogs. A man came to the doors and asked if I was waiting I said yes and hoped it was ok for the children to shelter inside. He replied yes and you can come in too and bring the dogs. As I suffer from asthma and was soaking his kindness and thoughtfulness was so nice.
Thumbs up for the Theatre Royal and I hope these comments get back to the gentleman thank you.
N. T.
Brilliant Rocky Horror production,best yet!
M. &. G. V.
Really enjoyed the whole experience. Saw Matilda. Seating roomy and with a good view throughout the theatre. Prices reasonable. Staff friendly. Queues for loo athalf time, so go before, if you get the chance
A. O.
Dated sound and lighting and a lack of friendliness.
The actual building is nice, comfortable and spacious. The seating is tight but comfortable enough. Well located with plenty of parking around. The sound system is mono (I swear it isn't even stereo) and the poor, uninspiring lighting makes the show feel like a School Play.
The staff is very well uniformed, fancy looking BUT NOT FRIENDLY. Not a smile, not a "Welcome", not even eye contact seeking.
Improving on the stage (sound and lighting) and training the staff in "customer service" would drastically improve this theatre.
J.
Fusionhost and the team support local artists and the theatre, it's always a nice day out!
- fusionhost.co.uk
Check out the Mayflower 400 play that's being performed this year!
T. P.
Well organised theatre that we have visited regularly. My only criticism is to avoid the bench seats right at the back of the upper tiers - Restricted viewing/audio, and also that during some operas we have visited, the "Subtitle" panel has been set so high you actually cant see the top of it from the upper tiers...
But will definitely be back again!
N. W.
We went here to see the pantomime Peter pan. We had reserved a table before the show in the theatre's restaurant, the reservations are for 2 hours prior to the show starting.
It was a fixed 2 or 3 course menu. The food was excellent and much better choice and quality than I had imagined.
The staff were excellent and it made a very enjoyable visit to the theatre.
J. Y.
Great experience watching The Worst Witch with my 6 year old daughter. Theatre was clean with helpful staff. Booster seats were available for little ones. Great job!
T.
First time visit. Excellent location for ease of travel by public transport. Well layed out exterior and interior, with a array of places to eat and drink. Superb seating and stage, some seats can be a little restricted, check seating plan before booking, can make all the difference.
C.
Saw Motown Saturday Pm. Good show. But overpriced for what it was. Scenery was ordinary. Songs were good, but they were in that era. The show was like a play with singing. We go to the theatre alot. Not the best we've seen by far!!
T. W.
Excellent theatre.. But I have to say the restaurant is poor.
A. H.
Quite accessible with adequate seating and good view down to the stage. There are lifts up to the upper levels for the elderly although I didnt notice if there was access for the disabled. The building seeme sound and well maintained bur the sound system was somewhat overpowering.
A. W.
Went to watch "THE MOUSE TRAP", end of February 2020, I was sat in the front row. I found that the seats were narrow and uncomfortable, also lots of teenagers talking through the performance, my wife had to ask them to be quiet, which they eventually did. Must of been there, for their A levels or University studies.
J. F.
good performance of Buddy 30th anniversary show and at the same price as previous performance. The theatre was full and I believe that if the prices are lower throughout the year the theatre royal performances would be full all the time, but as always a good night out
A. D.
Just amazing to be back at the Theatre. Just the best performance from Hairspray crew.
T. L.
The show we seen was one of the best and we went back again to see it.very polite staff.
G. B.
Excellent theatre state of the art facilities welcoming smiling staff. Disabled toilets wheelchair access with ramps and handrails. A customer lift to all floors. An disabled wheelchair lift. Large multi storey car park behind the theatre and cctv security with trained staff all with first aid training. Two bars a restaurant a balcony over looking royal parade. One of the best theatres in the UK.
S. W.
Watched the nutcracker. Was a lovely show.
M. R.
Great productions of Les Miserables on tour.
Theatre is modern, clean and comfy. Attracts quite a lot of talent, the only place us in the SW often get to see things.
J. B.
Every one support the arts ,the show is amazing ,extremely funny .well organised .socially distanced .we all felt very safe and enjoyed live theatre . Well done everyone .
K. H.
I’ve seen some great plays and shows here. My interest in magic and theatre gives me a biased opinion but I do believe Mary Poppins is one of the most magical and entertaining stage shows ever!
c. e.
I went to watch war horse as i was given tickets for my birthday and loved every minute of it, the theatre itself is in a brilliant location as its right on the bus route in town. They have their own bars and coffee stand as well as on site toilets.
M. S.
Fab, footloose was fabulous
P. B.
Lovely theatre with spacious seating. Frindly staff. We watched the pantomine and also precilla both were good shows. We will be going to watch 9 to 5 in July.
C. B.
Went to see Les Miserables and it was an amazing production. The theatre is very efficient an pre ordering refreshments for the interval is recommended as you will run out of time otherwise.
C. S.
Some good shows on, comfy seats (even for a 6ft 3 chap) and plenty of parking nearby. Only downside is the silly prices usually double or triple what you'd pay elsewhere for the same show.
J. K.
Excellent theatre very modern and clean
A. T.
Was a bit let down, as the seating layout on the bottom floor is to cramped and seats are to low when people are seated. Adding to the above the other problems are that seating should be split with more iasles in tween as there is to much toing an froing with elderly people having to keep getting up and down also thls applies to disabled as well. Seating should be recognised for the good of all.
Other than all the show was excellent
G.
Good range of shows on offer from West End to much smaller productions. Keen ticket prices. Good ticket booking system showing stage views from various seats. Modern theatre with good facilities, bar, restaurant and café. Good public transport links and car parking nearby
V. E.
Excellent position, easy to locate if you're not local. Very nice foyer with eating area. I went to see Motown the Musical which was great show.
j. d.
Always a good experience but parking can be very difficult so allow plenty of time and take advantage of the pre-pay option on your parking ticket by paying at a machine before you leave the car park to go to the theatre. It saves possibly 30mins of queuing at the end!
R. H.
Well designed modern theatre. Large car park right next door. Facilities include a cafe and a bar. Seats were comfortable and every one appeared to have a clear view of the stage. We sat at the back and had a great view of the stage, would choose similar seats again
J. G.
A pretty functional basic building that lacks the finer things you possibly have come to expect in West End of London theatres. Plus point is an adequate car park within a five minute walk from the main entrance. Accoustics within the theatre were acceptable, seating and leg room seemed to have the under 12 stone and shorter than 5foot 9inch visitor in mind. A wide range of shows catering for all age groups and taste are offered.
M. W.
Club Tropicana Friday 15 March. Knock out performances, great voices and all-round fun and laughter. Theatre staff were professional and welcoming. Great view from seats and will certainly be returning on a regular basis.
M. T.
Clean and tidy with reasonable prices on tickets and food/drink. We've loved our visits here. The only thing I would comment on is that the seating can get a bit uncomfortable if you're around for a while.
Highly recommended though. I travelled to New York a couple years ago and tried Broadway out. In my humble opinion TRP eclipses Broadway one thousand times over.
If you haven't seen a show, you should. I've seen West Side Story, Madame Butterfly and Tosca and all were fantastic. Amazing casts and sets with a great atmosphere from the crowd.
D. W.
Just had a fabulous meal followed by a superb performance of We will rock you. The overall experience was great and the show was something to talk about for a very long time......ggggggrrrreeeaaatttt.
S. H.
Modern, great acoustics and visibility of any show. Staff are always friendly and have always enjoyed every show here.
Quick tip: unless you are tall (not a lot of legroom) the bench seats right at the back can see everything and are also a lot cheaper!
A. D.
Amazing performance, but the mens' toilets could be better signposted ( other half was unable to find them during the interval as they were right over the other end of the building. ) The
ladies' wasn't much better. We had to go in door 12., we joined a queue of people whom we assumed were waiting to get in to the theatre but
it turned out to be the queue for the ladies loo, the door we needed was the one next to it where no-one was waiting and it wasn't until a member of staff appeared that we realised our mistake
B. L.
Premier venue for live musicals and plays. A favourite theatre for many productions to start their tours.
Always puts on quality shows. The best theatre I've been to, with good view from all seats.
J. W.
Enjoyed the show very much not what I expected at all but it was done very well. Very comfortable seats and a good view. Pity tickets cost 50 pounds each though
C. W.
Usually attracted a good selection of shows from wicked too smaller productions, that dont fail to provide value for money. Bar is reasonable for an entertainment venue. Never used the restaurants but again value isnt too bad. Will definitely visit again.
a. b.
Best venue for touring companies and starting a big production here . Rehearsing in TR2
J. N.
Absolutely amazing loved the show and the first time for me in the theatre. Friendly staff a good view and splendid performance. Will be back soon.

Went to see For the Love of a Stranger by Agatha Christie. I had not been to the Theatre Royal since the refurbishment as I was out of the Devon for at least 10 years and moved back again and I so enjoyed it very much and going to the Theatre Again! As I only managed to go to the theatre once while living away from Plymouth as mega busy etc. The staff I came into contact with were lovely and couldn't be more accommodating and courteous. I enjoyed the show immensely! I am looking forward to my next show already, whatever it may be!

Watched Sunset Boulevard. Great show in a really nice theatre...
A. S.
really good - no bar open at the moment due to covid restrictions
B. K.
I turned up wrong day for a show and they done their best to find us 2 seats despite it being a sell out show. Very grateful to them or else my grand-daughter would if missed out through my "senior" moment.
a. l.
Amazing fabulous bodyguard awesome. sadly seating restrictive access bad ..12 tand up to get to seat fair 40 rubbish.cinema more comfortable.leg room rubbish.how health and safety accept it when people are larger these days amazed.

We went to see "i think we are alone now" and we were blown away. 5 stars for the cast as they opened up a new world and new perspective for us all. Please know that drinks sold are stupidly expensive! Thats why im only rating 4 stars.

Family just saw the 39 steps last night. Possibly the best comedy we have ever seen. Theatre is pleasant, food and drinks relatively reasonably priced and good range, easy parking very close. A great evening out.
R. M.
Great theatre, broad mix of performances, and extremely helpful staff. I have a child with a disability and have been to few venues who made such an effort to be a accomodating. A+++
M. R.
As always a fantastic show and great atmosphere
P.
Great venue, great staging. The staff were pleasant and extremely helpful. Being a southerner, and used to London theatres, and audiences, I would choose the Plymouth Theatre Royal everytime. I have been to many productions here and always thoroughly enjoy the whole experience.
j. p.
I went to see Breakfast at Tiffany's last night. It was very much different to what I imagined but I really enjoyed it. It was fast, non-stop and very entertaining. There were so many lines, I'm amazed everything was remembered. Pixie sang beautifully and Matthew narrated confidently, with humour, wit and passion. It's great to experience something different
M.
Been many times now. Watched Summer holiday which was great . So excited have managed to get tickets for 'War horse ". Great theatre well set out friendly staff. And lovely bar and restaurant.
K. K.
Been here twice of recent times - to watch Elf and Panto (big Phil Mitchell fan, guilty!!)...both shows were great and would highly recommend it you get chance to see either of them (believe the panto is around until the 13th January and tickets going fast!) - we were lucky enough to get in one of the wings (I think that's the correct name?) And so was very close for the panto. Could only get seats on the top tier for Elf but don't let that put you off, you get a good view from wherever you are sat. Very professionally run the theatre itself and the staff very helpful to find your seats, etc. Only thing I would recommend to them would be to increase security on entry. Due to recent circumstances I would expect some sort of bag check or pat down as you walk in but there wasn't anything, which, rightly or wrongly, did make me feel a little uneasy. Other than that a great value and great shows!!
v. p.
Absolutely amazing only the seats could of had more leg space I'm the type of person that gets that tinkly painful feeling in their legs after a while or wrong move and I had to stand up mid through the play which was very embarrassing for me but else wise the play was amazing and environment too
Y. B.
Good theatre modern looking with some great shows. Bit pricey so dont go as often as we would like to. Easy to get to right in the town.
C. A.
Excellent venue for shows, chosen many times for pre West end productions try out, currently An Officer and Gentlemen within the next few weeks. Able to produce West end standard shows for reasonable prices. Good access to parking with varied restaurant selections close by for pre show dining
K. H.
Fabulous panto great view even from the top row! Would defo recommend for a show. The theatre is rrally lovely and easy walk from the town. My only 2 things would be firstly the staff really need to smile!! Secondly so many people coming down 1 small staircase was a little bit scary and I would dread to think wot would happen if we needed to get down in an emergency. There were no staff around helping anyone.
D. W.
Small seats, difficult to be comfortable for a long period of time. Left after the show feeling sore all over. Otherwise what goes on on stage was very good.
A. B.
Went to see kinky boots, great theatre, quick bar service with friendly staff. Show was amazing, and despite the hot weather we were quite comfortable in our seats.
H.
Les Miserables superbly delivered. Great restaurant and service. Interesting art work. Very very hot in the theatre but it was very hot outside.
Would definitely return.
W. R.
Very good theatre, staff cant be faulted on howpolite and helpful they were. Staff very polite, happy, helpful.
Saw Cirque Berzerk, which was an excellent circus show, made for the theatre.
A. M.
Seen many shows here. Great atmosphere and good prices.
S. T.
Watched "The Importance of Being Earnest" and enjoyed the play! Booking online, as well redeeming tickets, were easy. Theatre quite modern and seats were spacious.
J. B.
Always have a great time when we Ser a show. Recently saw Warhorse.
It was brilliant and very clever too, makes you believe the horses are real.
Drinks are priced OK for a Theatre and you can also eat there.
B. T.
Some mothers do ave em! With Joe Pasquale ...we laughed our socks off ! The set was superb as he destroyed it in true Frank Spencer fashion...a great show and a great cast..go see it if you can.
K. H.
Plymouth Theatre Royal is an amazing venue. Just seen Les Miserables, incredible, breathtaking show. Staff are friendly and helpful. Easy parking directly behind the theatre. Book early for the big shows!!
A. K.
Great theatre we went to see Les miserables - fantastic show excellent production well done to all involved. Very friendly and helpful staff at the theatre we will return.
O. Y.
Excellent seats: comfortable and well placed.
C. H.
Really enjoyed the show
S. P.
Saw Jersey boys here recently. Decent facilities. The show was great. The theatre is starting to look a bit unloved in places but the performances they have here are worth the visit.
a. j. b.
Excellent pantomime. Great staff. A lovely family show
K. W.
Modern large theatre that easily competes with London venues. Always attracts big shows.
A. C.
I only visited the ground floor cafe for a light lunch but what a nice place! Snacks & drinks reasonably priced plus pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. If you have mobility problems and need a wc, there's a disabled one a very short walk across the foyer (down a slope). Would recommend the cafe as an alternative to some of the busier coffee shops for a lunchtime spot. Must try and make it to a performance now!
G. M.
We had a fantastic time and the best show ever. The whole audience loved it and joined in with the cast with songs and 🕺 and a standing ovation at the end...
J. A.
So lucky to have such a wonderful theatre: I've had seats all over and the acoustics are brilliant and the view of the stage excellent.
S. B.
Beautiful venue and wonderful productions that have appeared and up and coming soon ,Also some productions that start in plymouth then go off to the west end of London, Broadway etc too. Staff are so lovely and helpful.
S. B.
Most enjoyable visit. Polite and friendly staff. And Benidorm live was brilliant.
S. A.
Went to see Kinky Boots here, the performance was brilliant, we were up in the middle tier and had a very good view of everything. The service was good, staff were friendly. Would recommend.
K. D.
Stunning portrait of sensitive and distressing issue which remains taboo. Might have created more contact with audience in a smaller room. However convenient parking and helpful staff in modern environment made for comfortable evening.
s. t.
Love this place, Blood Brothers, great show
p. s.
Show brilliant. 2 tickets at £140. Staff terrible
B. B.
I went to watch "An inspector calls".... It's the best piece I've ever seen, the stage was amazing, the set was amazing, the whole theatre was AMAZING!!
J. S.
Lovely theatre, great sound up on the balcony... My only complaint is the extortionate pricing of drinks, especially the soft drinks. As with the snacks .. everything over priced. Aside from that, a really nice, organised place to visit.
R. B.
A Murder was announced, absolutely amazing play to watch. We have a meal before. The food was excellent and the customer service friendly and helpful.
D. D.
The venue is great, but my god the prices for food and drink is outrageous.
If I every visit again, I'll certainly be popping in somewhere to pick up bits, maybe the Ritz or Harrods as I'm sure they'll be slightly cheaper than the cost of a round of drinks and some food here.
C. S.
Local car parking provision near to the theater is very expensive!, up to £11.00 for an evening, suggest a short walk to Drake Circus where late night parking to 12 midnight is only £2.00
We pre-booked dinner at the theater restaurant, whilst the food was OK, it was very average for the price paid. Service though was very good. Would not recommend, suggest Wetherspoon round the corner.
We visited the theater to see 'Son of a Preacher Man' fantastic production as usual from the best venue in the SW
A. B.
Visited to watch Titanic the musical,. Comfy seats. Recommend booking a table before you go, if you would like to dine. You can return to your table in the interval. Very nice place.
L. J.
An excellent show of Alladin!
T. P.
Staff very welcoming and many a great production to be seen here. Provides strong community support programmes for the Arts. Don't judge this book by its cover: it's grey blocky architecture is just a casing for a theatre worthy of being called Royal.
P. W.
Wonderful venue with many pre London shows. Comedy, Opera, Ballet, Musicals, all the genres. The Drum does quirky shows in a sweet little stag too.
t. h.
Comfortable seats nice bit off leg room. Drinks a bit on the expensive side, and to be honest even though the facilities are well looked after there just isn't enough for the amount of people that attend this venue.
I. B.
Amazing show, lovely helpful staff
D. J.
I've been going to the Theatre in Plymouth on and off since a child, although the performances vary a lot I've never had a bad experience.
Some seriously impressive shows here, certainly worth a visit whatever your preferences might be.
H. C.
An amazing show Annie was brilliant, didn't even recognise Craig until the second half!
Everyone was totally mesmerised by the v talented Annie and her dog.
The staff were v helpful, luvly cuppa after our long bus ride and not too long a queue at the loos. A v pleasant evening all round thanku
T. C.
Great theatre.
S. G.
Great range of West End shows come to the South West. Toilet facilities limited for size of audience. Parking close but limited pay stations make for huge queues when the theatre show ends.
S. S.
Crazy for you was ok but it wasn't brilliant! The main characters were not inspiring. The singers/musicians/dancers were better but none of the dancing was scintillating. Were they expected to do too much, their obvious musical talent spread too thinly. Caroline Flack's part was minimal and not worth billing her as a lead. Tom Chambers was ok but nothing to rave about. I've never seen the Lyric so empty.
The whole production was not the normal high standard expected for the Theatre Royal. Not worth the ticket price even with the discount.
j. h.
It can be fun, they should provide ear defenders and Autistic tickets (seating) so we can get out fast if needs be.
J. B.
It's a wonderful theatre, very pleasant staff
and the performance of Les Mis was superb
and most definitely one of the best I have seen (My 13th). Thank you Theatre Royal.
S. G.
Went to see 'We will rock you' and wow, what a show. We'll done everyone was fantastic! Great night out, well worth the money.
M. G.
Great theatre with lots of fabulous shows, friendly staff and plenty of amenities. The seats are a little firm if I wanted to criticise anything.
K. N.
Watched war horse which was amazing. There is a car park nearby, and the theatre itself has a cafe and restaurant. There were long queues for the women's toilets and not much selection of snacks to take into the theatre (Haribo or Pringles really) so you might want to bring your own.
R. C.
Good performances and comfortable seats but would rather not have sat in the curve as had ro been neck to see full stage.
E. A.
Just seen les miserables at the theatre royal, truly outstanding production.
L. H.
Brilliant
C. G.
We had a meal in the restaurant before the performance of The Importance of being Earnest. Our table was available from 17 .30 so we could have a leisurely meal. The menu offered a good choice and our meals were delicious. We could, if we …

Visited to see Still Alice. What a performance by Sharon Small and the rest of the cast. Had great seats thanks to my lovely daughter in law and the staff were most helpful. Can't wait to go again. Would thoroughly recommend this theatre.
T. D.
A beautiful venue with world class productions. Just returned from an incredible performance of An Inspector Calls; simply brilliant.
F. S.
A wonderful performance of Les Miserables at the Theatre Royal..
Good views in the upper circle.
Friendly , efficient staff a good experience all round.
L. W.
Welcome back!
W. J.
Nice theatre, cafe could be better. Fresh food would be a good start. Sandwiches i can buy from a supermarket, really?

This this place.
M. &. G. V.
Really enjoyed the whole experience. Saw Matilda. Seating roomy and with a good view throughout the theatre. Prices reasonable. Staff friendly. Queues for loo athalf time, so go before, if you get the chance
A. K.
Great theatre we went to see Les miserables - fantastic show excellent production well done to all involved. Very friendly and helpful staff at the theatre we will return.
Z. H.
Really good theatre located in the centre of Plymouth. The rooms where you watch the plays aren't great for wheelchairs but with a manual being pushed, you could bump it down the steps. There is loads of places to park a car outside. The popcorn choice isn't great so bring your own food but drink is great. Good theatre
S. C.
Great theatre. Modern and lots of space. Was in the main theatre but there is also a studio theatre there.
Fantastic views of the stage and comfey seats.
Good choice of bars and big car park behind the theatre.
Just a few mins walk from the bus stops.
M. H.
Was a great experience. Really had fun was so funny thank you x
C. W.
Very good, doing all they can to keep people safe at the moment with covid, and get theatres open again!
B. S.
Theatre fantastic (5th Dec 2019)but we'd gone to see 'We Will Rock You'..... we were bitterly disappointed with it (3 females,mum+2 daughters aged 30-70
I was not expecting that at all. We would have preferred to see just the main guy singing the whole lot...the female leads were screeching,it gave me a headache.
It's not about who can scream the loudest it's about doing Justice to some wonderful song writing.
It was ear piercingly bad.
They recieved a standing ovation so clearly it was enjoyed, just not by us.⁷
J. C.
Watched Matilda the musical with the wife and kids. Amazing show really well put together. The venue is also first class.
A. G.
Enjoyable pre show dinner, although they had run out of my mum's choice of lamb on the menu by 6pm. I thought tickets were rather expensive at £62.50 each!
D. H.
Always love a trip to the theatre Royal, staff always friendly and eager to help any needs. Cant wait to visit again when open.
J. N.
Good show
G. E.
Went to see La Nave Bete. I found the seats uncomfortable but then I'm 6ft 2 and have a dodgy back.
