Reviews of Brockholes
A.
Absolutely love it here. Beautiful scenery and fantastic wildlife. They have a range of activities throughout the year for the kids which are either free or cost little. In the summer you can certainly make the day of it, great park for young and older kids especially. £5 parking all day, considering looking into monthly/quarterly cost for the car park so we can go more. Went today for the kids orienteering and the ladies there were absolutely fantastic, great service.
N. T.
Lovely place to walk round and see wild life but the cafe is poor. No individual tables to sit at only long ones, coffee and tea have to be made yourself from machine, soggy chips being kept warm rather than freshly made. Should be better for the price. They need to check out Martin Meres cafe that is excellent.
K. I.
My first visit and my family enjoyed very well. Went on a weekday with a nice weather not very busy, will surely go back. You have to pay £5 day ticket for parking cheaper when you buy an annual pass.
Large Play area with activities for all ages, nice environment for family picnics
S. R.
Came here a while back and it's nice to see it's developing into a great reserve. A really great glass fronted hide, The Look Out, with seating faces the lake and almost sits on it. Children can identify birds from the illustrations. The main floating buildings are still open to walk around. There's a small cafe mixed with the shop now. A nice seating area outside. Toilets still available. Go online to see what events are on and to book, it was pond dipping at our visit. There's a play area off the large carpark. £5 a day is reasonable for a longer visit but we've got the online 3month combined centre parking ticket, which saves you thinking about the cost of a shorter visits and encourages you to get out more. It all helps the development/upkeep of the reserve.
J. S.
A fantastic, educational, adventurous and relaxing day out for all the family. There is so much to discover, you can walk for miles and see plenty of wildlife. There are a couple of outdoor play areas for the kids, with some fun equipment and a brutal obstacle course.
Parking is £5 all day and contributes to the running of the reserve, so well worth it.
The floating village is amazing and the atmosphere is peaceful and gentle. There are so many birds to see.
We took part in pond dipping while we were there and discovered some wonderful pond life and went on a Gruffalo adventure through the woods, to discover wooden sculptures of the characters hidden in there.
Highly recommended!

A nice day out for the family, accessible pathways for a pleasant walk with our pram and young children. Play areas for the children were pretty good. Visitor centre was informative and the cafe had a good selection of snacks and drinks.
M. K.
Wonderful nature reserve with different walks. It has features like carved statues to spot, ponds, a little lake that the big cafe rests over. There's bird spotting areas & they have courses for children & adults working in nature being creative.
A well run visitor centre with plenty of parking & a playground for kids. It's a great place for the family. Dog walking isn't allowed on the reserve though as the environment is delicate with birds & wildlife & closely governed.
N. L.
Really nice nature reserve. Has modern visitor centre and restaurant/cafe and toilets, so you're not completely in the wilderness.
Great spot for bird watching or spotting animals and insects. Went here to test out my camera, see attached pictures for shots.
Sometimes the paths aren't clear so you might be wandering into thick bush, but it's easy to figure out where you are in relation to the visitor centre.
Good spot to go fishing too, if you like that sort of thing.
Easy to find just off Jct 31 of the M6 - it's a bit of a twisty windy road to get in and out of the official entrance, but parking is plentiful. Cost £5 for the day and it's automated, so all you have to do is pay at a pay station when you leave.
Recommended especially if you like bird watching.
D. W.
Excellent place for an easy walk round the bird reserve. Plenty of hides to see the wildlife.
Nice centre for snacks/drinks.
Just a pity about the constant done of traffic from the M6.
L. M.
Nice nature reserve. No dogs allowed which means kids can run wild which is nice. Overly priced cafe as expected so taking picnic is a better idea. Ice cream tubs are terribly priced for the size you get. Activities such as pond dipping are good but wouldn’t waste on money on the explorer walks unless your kids are approx age 7 and above and care about writing down notes, because you could just find the animals or mythical creatures on the posts yourself, while on a walk and point them out to your toddler.
Has a good adventure playground although it’s probably aimed at kids 5+ there are no baby swings.
Good toilet facilities and parking - parking is card only but not Apple Pay.
Walks are partly uphill with gravely paths - buggy was needed for toddler as it was further than expected to do the circular walk. Good place for kids to see bugs etc and burn off energy. Would go again. Would go on a week day again. Would buy tickets in advance for activities as they sell out fast.
S.
Beautiful nature reserve, only wish we would have had more time to spend here. We would definitely have done the egg hunt. Lots of beautiful walks for all of the family.
A. O.
What a fantastic place. £5 to park and that's it. Reasonably priced cafe on site or take a picnic. Things to do for all ages and abilities. 250 acres, it's huge. All manner of birds. Deer. Bees. Clean free to use toilets. Can't believe we've never been before.
J. M.
We always enjoy our visits here, and bring all our visitors here too. Just wish there were more picnic tables, for when you just want to have a quick flask of tea. xx
m. D.
Very pretty place we went to a wedding there last night , good service , if you want gluten free food on the menu I think you must have to request it in advance as there was hardly anything I could eat but apart from that it was beautiful looks like it has lovely walks , the venue floats on water , the prices at the bar were quite expensive
P. B.
What a beautiful place that is.... surrounded by lakes, forest and the river. Inside few cafes and tables to sit down and relax. Great for bit of outdoor experience or to spend the time with family...
R. T.
A perfect day out for the family. Beautiful nature reserve with lots of walks, animals and little beasties to see. Ample parking and a nice cafe serving nice tasty snacks.
Highly recommend a visit. 👌
D. C.
What a beautiful place to visit,Jim the guide took us out for and hour walking around and was very knowledgeable and helpful.had lovely food there as well.
D. W.
Lovely natural reserve sympathetically maintained & easily accessible!
Easy walking along the Ribble and around the waterfowl lakes.
Many dragonflies out today!
The amazing value £5 Car Park charge, that covers entry, for all car occupants can be paid by RingGo or contactless.
B. F.
This is a superb area to explore and see nature. A fine area for walking and an excellent educational centre.
There is also a basic cafe, which sells simple food and hot drinks.
S. S.
Great for walking around even when the visitor centre is closed. Probably could be signposted a bit better, especially where you have to cross the Guild Wheel, but if you've got an hour or two there's plenty of different paths to get around at a nice meander. Just pick up your litter and don't take dogs, no matter how well-behaved you think they are.
P. L.
Lovely walk around lakes but not enough signposts so got lost a few times and ended up on the Ribble Way and had to go back. Luckily took picture of area before walk otherwise would have got lost. Was trying to do blue route.
Could do with maps or leaflet in visitor centre.
L. M.
My favourite place to come and watch the birds and practice my photography, catering is top notch and it's great that the money goes right back into the reserve! I would love to see some dry stone walling to encourage weasels to make an appearance more often! <3
S.
It’s an amazing place for family and friends. I always go with my family to have a picnic. The play are is super fun with my younger cousins especially the zip line. The walls are so fun as we get to admire nature and the river. The shops are amazing. I went to one of the shops one time with my friend during Halloween to do pumpkin carving which was so fun. The cafe that sells drinks, ice cream, cakes and many is so good. I’d really recommend this place as it’s amazing ✨
t. P.
Beautiful nature reserve. Around two mile walk around the lake made from the old quarry. Amazing scenery and plenty of wild life from birds to deer.
S. Q.
It was worth to spend a adventure afternoon with kids over there. More we got lost in the woods more they got excited. Taking a decent torch with you, beware it goes dark after 4pm in the winter no path lights.
Yes definitely will visit more often.
M. W.
Love this venue, its a real piece of paradise. I didn't mind the cheap £5 all day parking fee as it goes towards the upkeep of the reserve.Beautiful location and a well managed site. The architecture and ethos is excellent. The park is great for youngsters. The good quality food and great serve is just a bonus.
l. d.
Went on Saturday it was quite bizi on the floating cafe as there was childrens activity things going on .There were plenty of squirrels around and birds .Swans ducks on the lakes. Coffee and Tea ok. Bathrooms clean and tidy.
D. H.
Lovely place for what it is, not over developed as an attraction but would be 5* if proper signage was installed to show the routes as it is very unclear where you are or which direction to go in. Even just coloured arrows on fence posts as you are going around (there are occasionally some arrows but they are green... There is no green route).
i. b.
Superb place. Quiet and piecfull. A lot of space in car park, in restaurant. Not a biggest choice of food. More like cafe. Toilets are clean. Free. Car park 5£ all day. Many ways for a walking.
T. O.
We came here to host a conference and we were well looked after. Such peaceful surroundings
M. F.
The flagship nature reserve for the UK Wildlife Trust. This reserve is fantastic.
Its absolutely bustling and bursting with animal and plant life. We seen herons, white egrets, ducks, fish, frogs, insects and so much more.
The hub has a café, toilets, activity centre, welcome centre and gift shop. All this on a man-made floating island.
Many nature trails to find and great for kids. Look online for the kids map activity packs, so they can look for the animal markers along the paths on the day.
Some trails lead to and follow the river Ribble. Look out for some amazing wildlife along this river.
Entry is free, but carparking is £5 for the day.
The carpark is large and has overflow bays.
t.
All day parking £5, visitor centre with maps and information about the nature reserve, activity Centre, Cafe & toilets. Some paths can be muddy.
K. n. S.
Really well maintained and the staff at the information centre was very helpful and knowledgeable.
It's an ideal place for a family with small children, especially if you have a pram (good access).
The play area was nice but could do with a bit more equipment.
Overall a relaxing visit.
C. E.
Beautiful place, very well looked after and informative staff are available in the excellent floating visitor village. No charge to enter just parking charge for the day. More than reasonable. Will certainly be returning.
L. H.
A beautiful place to spend a few peaceful hours amongst nature as well as enjoying the excellent facilities.
A. P.
Good day out nice walk the river with nice views. Food in cafe not brilliant just soup/sandwiches or chips with pasty or sausage roll or pizza twist. No cake or biscuits cake just cookies. Other cafe did a wider range of food but smelt of fat when you went in off putting.Next time we will take a pininc. But nice view over the mere from cafe window.
J. C.
This is a beautiful place to visit for all ages, its clean and friendly, you can go for a short or long walk, has signs up so you don't get lost, it has a children's play area with picnic table's plus a good size parking area, all they ask is a £5 entrance donation to help maintain the grounds.
T. B.
Great place to walk around. There are several path to choose from. Kids play area is fantastic and full of adventure. I paid £5.40 for day long carpark. Nice park, worth a visit.
A. P.
Beautiful location to go as a family to observe and enjoy nature at its best just the cool breeze and the greenery around you with the hiliggt of the floating village for a sit and eat out on a summer day just right for a family trip. Walking trails, biking trails, bird watching, camp fire sites ,children play area and restaurants and added beauty of all in nature makes this place an awesome place on a summer day out.
H. G.
Great, tranquil place. Lovely reserve, wildlife, I've cream, walks, play park. You could easily spend all day here. We had so much fun :)
A. H.
Excellent place to spend time in nature. Highky recommend In Focus binocular and telescope shop, the staff are extremely knowledgeable and explain thoroughly all the options available depending in your budget. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
F. H.
A very late and short visit just before the car park gates close at 9. Didn't get to see much wildlife however did manage to go for a walk close to the children's play area. This place is absolutely huge and would definitely be coming back to explore more. There only seems to be one pay machine for parking which is at the furthest parking bay. It's £5 parking for all day which on my visit for an hour or so was excessive ☹️ but worth it if you're there longer
G. E.
Great place! We had just arrived in Lancashire and enjoyed the reptile meet, the ducks and the cafe and shop. Lots of toys to play with! We will be back! No entrance fee but a fiver for parking.
t. t.
It is a beautiful place you have to go !
J. L.
Nice place! A few trails to choose from, we went with the blue trail (~2hours) in the rain!!! 😅
Paths are well-maintained and fun to explore!
Open during visit: Kids play area, fishing lake, hides for birdwatching, gift shop and cafe.
The food at the cafe was really nice, but takeout only due to COVID. I'd suggest more covered outside seating, we had to run to the car with our food 😭
Parking is £5 all day, loads of spaces. Location is relatively easy to find, just off the M6.
L. B.
Lovely natural environment to enjoy and explore. Good for families.
P. F.
Very nice nature reserve. Did a short walk then went into cafe which was very nice. Staff friendly and helpful. Will be going back to do more walks.
C. A.
Fantastic place to visit if you like walking and the countryside. There's good bicycle trails too. Very popular place for bird watchers and nature lovers. They have a great cafe and gift shop too.
N. B.
Great place to walk around for a few hours. Kids had a great time exploring, finding big sticks and getting muddy. There's a playground, cafe, toilets and little gift shop too. No entrance fee - parking was £5 per car for the day (as at Dec 2020), which is great value.
A. P.
Lovely place for a walk and a coffee friendly staff 😊
c. M.
What a great place ,not only bird watching, but nice country walks ,or any outdoor sport . Good paths , plenty keeping the children happy interesting history, place to visit I was going to give a five Star but parking can be bit exspesive , you need to spend all day. Not just a few hours. It's a must !👍😉 And one of them hidden gems ,like I always say. Have a grate day.
M. D. A. S.
Beautiful setting. Only the cafe was open for takeaway on visit 13th April, great coffee and OK food. My children loved the playground, all important zip wire, and exploring the area. Nice spot to sit by river ribble in warm weather also.
S. T.
I love this place! Unfortunately, I was there for work, but what a beautiful outlook. Lovely food for lunch and we were well looked after by the staff all day.
G. M.
Quite simply a lovely place to visit. The parking is £5 for the day, may sound like a lot but you can spend a whole day here so its not too bad. The floating centre has shops for food and souvenirs and there's an information /educational centre that caters for all ages. From what I saw its access all areas for wheelchair users, paths are good and well maintained and well sign posted. There's a children's play area with lots to keep your little cherubs happy for hours. For the whole family there's lots of wildlife and bird life too. We had a wonderful day and the lads aged 7 and 11 loved it too.
N. C.
Nice for a walk to view wildlife, take the kids to the play area. Well run, nice cafeteria, friendly staff
K. B.
Used Auditorium, the drop-down screen is a bit too far in front of the lectern, and the sound was a bit unpredictable, but the projector is good, and the staff are amazing. The presentation kit does need a review, but the location is amazing!
G. D.
What an amazing place, the scenery is stunning with some beautiful walks around the grounds, all pathways are in good condition, we went on good Friday and they had a Easter hunt for the kids with a map for them to follow and cards to find making it a really good way of walking without them knowing, the out door play area is fantastic for the kids and the visitors centre is a fun place to with a craft workshop for children to the cafe is really nice and staff really friendly, I can not give this place a high enough review, please try it you will love it. Entry is free but car park is £5 for the day and you can pay but cash or card
J. W.
Great scenery with wildlife all around you lots of walking, great park for the kids. Good views in the floating village with nice snacks and drinks after your long walk. I would recommend this wildlife centre to everyone at any age.
G. S.
This is a great place to spend your day. Nice walks or ride your bike. They have a play area for the kids. Some place to sit and relax or even look at the wildlife. There's a coffee shop if your hungry.
Definitely recommend everyone to check this place out.
S. B.
We love it here. The adventure playground is free with toilet facilities close by, and the cafe food is great.
G. H.
Brilliant, very interesting, lovely walks, beautiful surroundings. You get to see some amazing wildlife which wouldn't be there without Brockholes working hard to do create and maintain the environment. The floating visitor centre is fab, staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant food is fresh, has a good variety and delicious. If you have difficulty walking you may struggle as it's hilly in places but the car park is near the visitor centre and that is all on a pathed, flat area.
R. S.
Great place, lots of flowers, insects, birds and other nature to see. Has an extensive playpark for kids too. The visitors centre has good interpretation and helpful staff. The cafe is good as well. Recommend a visit if you live nearby or travelling on the M6 and looking for a stopping point.
J. P.
Brilliant place to take young kids.
Great out door play park.
Lots of nature trails
Nice cafe
Parking 5 pound for the full day.
J. M.
Be aware not using govt app for covid in cafe nor staff wearing face mask in cafe (although behind screen).
Apart from that beautiful place although stiles very high if you are just a bit mobility disabled could be tricky (not in guest centre but on pathways around big lakes).Need additional step at least. Loads of people struggling on stiles. Thought it would be more accessible......
A. P.
It's a pleasant place very pretty, if you like a walk with great views this is place, the floating village is just ok.
T. 7.
Very well presented nature reserve formed from an old extrapolation site. There is an interesting visitors centre with various shops which floats in one of the pools. The restaurant windows look out over the pools with various migratory birds to view. There also short walking trails which are well marked up.
R. D.
A stunning hidden treasure. Visited Brockholes for a corporate event, although it is so close to home, i had never even heard of it before that. What a stunning peaceful place! The staff were brilliant, food was yummy 😋, and the views picturesque. The perfect place for walking and to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It i could give more than 5 stars i would!
L. A.
Great place, very interesting, lots to see, good place to take children, good for bird watching, great interest centre with lots to look at with interaction for the children, great outdoors place with a park, paths, lakes, cafe and toilets, wheelchair friendly. Dogs are not allowed due to wildlife being disturbed.
C. S.
Beautiful place to explore and has lots of hidden area within the woodlands that are a must see. It's a good place to take the kids as there is a big park and obstacle course as well as lots of walking trails.
Plenty of wildlife to see around Brockholes too, including deer and many differernt types of birds.
D. M.
Had a very pleasant walk. They have made changes to the shop/cafe which I don't like. Also the resturants changes dont work well. It was better the way it used to be. Hate the long school dinner tables.
A. Y.
Great place. Parking is expensive but at least it's an all day price.
T. O. G.
It’s ok. Decent adventure playground & the floating buildings are a bit of a novelty. Some people opt to bike it around the lake, I’d say it isn’t the best route for cycling personally, too busy with walkers, bit narrow in places. I walked it. Far side is close to the constant humming & noise of the M6.
A. C.
Really very amazing place in summer time it is more beautiful
R. A.
Lovely place, surrounded in nature easy to get to, plenty of parking, lots of ducks
Food was basic and pricey and the staff are young and a little inexperienced however happy to help.
n. i.
Birds watchers heaven. Great walking paths all marked. Very clean and well maintained paths. Thank you to the volunteers. Nice cafe with tables all around to have lovely views.
H. W.
We went on a warm sunny day and the common blues and damsel flies were prolific. Amazing. Gorgeous wild flowers and lots of dragonflies and other insects.
P. G.
Lovely place to visit, just minutes from Preston City centre. Plenty of things to see and do (especially if you like bird watching).
There's plenty of parking, nature trails and walks. The centre is quite something, it's built to float in the middle of a lake, surrounded by reeds, from where you can sit and eat, see fish jumping and watch the birds.
There is a cafe / restaurant, ice cream shop, souvenirs and an educational centre.
All in all a decent place to visit (particularly with kids, there's a good size PlayPark.)
J. G.
A nice nature center to visit, with a lot of trails to walk about.
F. H.
Fantastic place for a walk. We did a scarecrow trail and spent time walking round and visited the visitor centre cafe and park. Bargain for £5 a car and for a good cause
H. B.
Fantastic place. Great for a walk or family activity. £5 to park your car for the day (£3 off peak season) good restaurant, shops. Choice of walks. A twitchers delight.
A. W.
A really unusual unique place well worth a visit. We went to the orchid show but lots of other things to do. Gift shop, information centre, walks, play area and a cafe. The cafe could have looked cleaner and fresher but it was quite busy.
t. w.
The photos taken were taken t 53.771759 lat - - 2.622909 Long in the plant meadow. Where we surveyed the area for wildlife species. We used a quadratic in 3, the corresponding locations to identify species in the X habitat. We marked down our species finds on a sheet to keep a track record. We used an app called plant net to discover the plants in the area
j.
A beautiful conservation area on the very edge of the city.
£5 to park all day but is situated on the Guild Wheel so pedestrian and cycle accessible.
Plenty to do with well kept paths and very clean.
Adventure park for the kids and picnic benches.
Visitor centre has helpful staff with plenty of information on the area.
Large cafe, restrooms have baby changing, disabled toilets. Gift shop.
Events on during holidays. Had a great day, definitely recommend.
M. P.
We have passed the sign for Brockholes hundreds of times and never stopped. I'm so glad that we did today. What a beautiful place, plenty of trails to explore plus a fabulous adventure playground and lots of wildlife to spot makes it fun the kids as well as the grownups. We didn't stop on the cafe but did sit on the pontoon and have an ice cream whilst watching the heron and dragonflies. No changing places toilet so loses a star from us as we couldn't spend long there.
g. 1.
Plenty of options for different walking routes. I struggle to walk sometimes and found the path to be flat most the way round. Only 2 very very slight inclines which were ok...ok for prams.....mobility scooters seen while I was there too. Saw deer, baby hares, geese, birds etc Cafe was ok. Bit expensive but as money goes back into the reserve it's not too bad. Kids loved the chips and had ham sandwiches. To save money take snacks for kids as is £1.00 per choc bar in cafe. Nice staff everywhere. Really helpful . Arts and crafts for kids at £2.00. Would recommend for quality family time if you are on a budget. Spend £5.00 on car park then that's it if take own lunch, drinks etc.
A. S.
Beautiful reserve, a lot of different bird species, good walks, a great cafe in the middle, substantial kids play area and shops. Would recommend to anyone including small kids, pushchair friendly too
l. c.
The place is beautiful the cafe let's it down only the small cafe open which seems sensible during quiet times .The breakfast roll and coffee was very poor yo say the least we only are it because of hunger as we had cycled tweny plus miles to get there .The site is beautiful but don't forget your picnic .
L. B.
Lovely walk, signage and maps aren't the most clear - could do with a check and maybe update. Toilets on site that were clean.
Parking machine says display in your car even though all signage says pay on exit
J. C.
What a fantastic place for a family or just enjoy on your own. Take in the sights enjoy one of the restaurant's or cafe. Lots of activities for all to enjoy.
S. J.
Lovely place for a walk, with the woods next to the ponds. Loads of Butterflies, damselflys and driving flies, plus a hunting kestrel, buzzard and a very photogenic heron.
S. T.
Lovely nature reserve. We enjoyed the trail activity and the butterfly craft. The cafe is very good too.
O. M.
Beautiful scenery, great restaurant and cafe. Nice park for the kids to play in, walks to go on and see the wildlife.
T. A.
Took advantage of the recent soaring heatwave this bank holiday Monday and travelled to Brockholes for the first time. I regret not visiting this little gem of natural beauty earlier, working a very short distance away in Preston. Better late than never I suppose. There are many walking paths to experience and things of interest, for example the different species of wild birds and insects inhabiting the area are well documented and photos and descriptions of them are well placed for visitors young and old to peruse. The ice cream at Coots, in Brockhole village was delicious, well priced and much needed in the intense sun and heat. Highly recommended for all to visit.
A. A.
Fantastic place for all the family. Shame if you dogs though as they're not allowed but otherwise we'll worth a visit. The views and walks are amazing.
T. G.
Such a lovely place. Highly recommended for 1 day trip! 💚
S. S.
Beautiful place. Great cafes. Great walks. £5 to park your car all day
T. B.
Beautiful! Great walk round the lake. Some hides to look at the wildlife.
C. W. S.
Lovely venue for weddings etc.. but disappointed in the waiting around as the staff get things ready, overall it's a beautiful area great for photography as it all just floats so nicely on a lake.. awkward to get to from the North as many miss the turning and find themselves back on the motorway heading towards south away from it so more clear signs are desperately needed..
A. S.
Love this place. My fiancé and I went here for a day date and it was so beautiful. We have been again since with our children and its a stunning place to visit
J. P.
This place is excellent for a lazy Saturday on the lake. The village has great food, ice cream and the views can’t be beat for the Preston area. I had a great time!
E. R.
Absolutely beautiful place. They have a small restaurant and a gift shop as well. Very pleasant experience overall.
D. K.
Lovely outdoor space for a walk in the wild except for the noise from the M6! Lost a star for the £4 sausage rolls, outrageous!!
F. P.
1st time at this lovely place. came away completely chilled. loved our guided walk from Jim. Will def be back
L. F.
Beautiful place😍 but so close to the motorway 😵
still huge selection of birds you can find here but noise from M6 distracted me a lot((
A. C.
Great Nature Reserve. Great place to spend a few hours watching the wildlife. Shops, restaurant and other facilities available to make it a great day out.
P. W.
Nice place serving good food & offering easy walking trials. At the time of visit we saw 2 deer & a heron.
P. W.
Wonderful place anytime of year. Lots of great easy walks for all the family!
a. O.
Fabulous day out. We had fun following the challenge 2 walk, which had stunning views of the river. Lovely Easter basket activity for the children and a great park for children of different age groups. Well worth a visit and doesn't cost a fortune
v. l.
Lovely walk around very well informed 4 roots to do lovely cafe at the end wonderful day my daughter and me xxxx
A. a. L. M.
Great place to take a walk, and see some fascinating wildlife and birds. Great adventure playground for children of all ages. The cafe is fantastic setting on a floating visitor centre out on the lake. Regular activities, crafts etc. Also great conference/wedding facilities.

First visit for me will come again later in the season. Good views less wildlife than expected, too early perhaps. Enjoyed the gentle walks. Parking was only £3 all day and no entrance fee but the cafe is a way of raising funds for the reserve, so in effect your support is optional. Children are catered for with the inevitable play areas.
B. D.
This is a lovely area and well worth a visit. We were with our two granddaughters who loved the adventure play areas. We later visited as part of a cycle trip around the guild wheel and ate lunch at a small restaurant there. The soup was delicious!! One negative point is regarding the parking. So many people park outside to avoid the five pound charge inside. Two points re this. 1 please pay as it helps to support the venue’s upkeep staff etc. 2 if it really is too expensive for a whole day charge introduce a cheaper rate so more people are willing to pay - perhaps by the hour!
M. C.
Absolutely great experience - despite the freezing weather we spent several hours here on a beautiful long walk, and having delicious tea and cake in the cafe (also have gluten free options). Will definitely be back.
J. C.
Discovered this when I enquired about places to visit near where I was staying, it was a busy day with lots of families visiting Santa's Grotto.
Staff friendly and informative.
Cafe had a good choice of food to suit most.
Gift shops on site.
m. t.
Fantastic family destination, lots to see and do, nice food and you can go in any season, never fails to please
L. T.
Rainy day, but always have a lovely time here. Lots to explore! The Christmas markets were great too.
S. P.
Lovely spot, lots of good walks and places for kids to play
W. W.
Had a great time walking around this beautiful nature reserve. Plenty of parking which costs £5.00 for the day. The ladies in the visitors centre were very helpful and friendly. Lots of places sit and observe the bird life, a twitchers paradise! The food in the cafe was ok and reasonably priced. Would recommend a visit
S. J.
Took a trip to Brockholes with my uni and had a very interesting day. Upon arriving i was surprised to find a little slice of tranquility only up the road in Preston as i wasn't even aware it even existed! The floating structures of the buildings that make up the Cafe, Education Centres and gift shops are quite breathtaking and made me think I wouldn't mind a house like that myself haha The conservation work of all the volunteers is so admirable and all there hard work goes to show in the amazing nature reserve they have there. We bird watched for a while and there was an abundance of species from Grey Herons to the usual Coots and Mallards as well as lots of Swans and their babies. We also had a look at how the staff survey the insect species in the reserve with a few methods such as simple ones banging on the trees while holding a net or making up traps in the ground with distilled water and anti-freeze for the insects to fall into and be preserved and collected for observation. We saw a few little creepy crawlies like a beetle and some slugs but what we didn't see that I was quite disappointed about was the wild Deer. According to the staff there is many wild deer roaming the site which is fascinating and I might have to take a trip back to try and see them for myself. Overall it is a very impressive ode to conservation and an enjoyable day out.
H. B.
I had a great day out here yesterday with my partner. A beautiful walk, we saw lots of birdlife and the area was very clean. The staff were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. A real pleasure particularly as the weather was glorious. 🦆🦋🌿
B. M.
Great place for wildlife, but I’d advise going when it’s quiet. It’s hard to see anything when there are kids running around during the day.
k. m.
Really great place for interacting with nature. Great place for bringing children
C. C.
Fabulous walk. My children had so much fun doing the explorer challenge! Super, pram friendly route 😁
D. M.
Beautiful surroundings, a peaceful place 2 minutes from the motorway. Various walking trails for people of all abilities. We'll worth the £5 parking charge, which is used for the upkeep of the centre.
E. R.
Great place 😊 a bonus is amazing playground for kids. We never get bored there 😊
C. C.
Lovely place to come on a nice day. But £5 to park (even though it goes to the wildlife trust) is very expensive. After half an hour it started raining so maybe i won't consider coming again unless I plan to spend a full day here
S. B.
Lovely walk, great adventure play, great visitors centre!
P. M.
Car park £3 all day, reasonable. Cafe a bit pricey. Lovely walk on a fine day.
S. A.
Its super place but I think more people would go if the parking was free or cheaper .
It's up to £5.00 now so if you just want a coffee it's an expensive one !!!!
A. C. (.
Access is not easy, there are signposts, but you have to be very careful to get into the correct lane at the roundabouts. Tortuous is probably the best description. It was extremely wet when I visited, paths were muddy and so were the playgrounds. Dogs are only allowed in certain places but that did not stop dog owners letting their animals off lead and racing about. Parking is expensive, my understanding is that because the construction was financed by the lottery there can not be an entrance charge, but a high parking charge is allowable. Good selection of birds on the water. I will not visit again because the access is so difficult and parking to expensive.
G. P.
It had been some time since I was last here, and I appreciate that they are fortunate to have survived the lock down, and previously I had payed for parking by the hour, which was relatively expensive, but this time it was a flat £5 fee, and we were expecting to have lunch in the restaurant, but now it is closed during the week, open at the weekend, it is a good site for bird watching, but the cost on site may put people off, there is a cafe onsite, which is quite good, and there is a sand Martin Bank for the sand Martins to nest, which is unusual.
A. C.
Had a brilliant day here, saw 34 different species of birds, including nuthatches, a crow fighting with 2 buzzards and ending with 2 kingfishers down by the river side. The paths were good, a little muddy in places but ok. Lots of surveying going on in Ribbleton pool but did not detract from the birdwatching if you were patient enough . Well worth the visit and £3 car parking charge.
r.
A really good day out, bring a picnic or eat in the cafe, gift shop and ice cream parlour and activities for the kids. A fiver to park the car or cycle there and have a free day out, well worth a visit.
C. L.
A great place for a walk with the family. Lots going on, good play areas, and you'll learn about the local nature a good food and ice cream. Most paths are pram friendly.
S. L.
Fantastic place great view and nice cafe
C. S.
Always a pleasure to visit. Great visitors centre and restaurant. The breakfast barns are first class although service can be hit an miss. The reserve is full of interesting wildlife, flora and fauna including the local celebrity Kestrel called Kevin and a Bank come called Santander. Walks include woodland and Riverside trails.Staff are on hand at the visitors centre to help and advise. The reserve is free to visit but you have to pay for parking - considering the size of the reserve it is well worth the money. Brockholes is adjourned to other reserves such as Boilton Woods, all managed by Lancashire Wildlife Trust.
P. P.
Very nice place to walk round and see birds and insects and parking was good value £5 for the day
S. G.
I loved it. I've never been before and I was very pleasantly surprised. Car park is well maintained but pricey at £5 no matter the duration, the walkway/water-level bridge to the centre is awesome and water around is very clear. We went on the Santa trail and posted our sons Christmas letter at the end of it
A. L.
Beautiful location for a meeting. Fantastic alternative to traditional hotels etc. Can't vouch for the family day out capabilities of the location, but having a meeting in a room floating on a pontoon at water level with a wall of glass, and fantastic acoustics was really lovely.
J. D.
Brockholes is a new kind of nature reserve; an unreserved reserve, located just off Junction 31 of the M6 near Preston; it's owned and managed by the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside. If you enjoy walking, bird watching, open spaces, rivers, lakes etc., then Brockholes is well worth a visit. Love the "spectacular floating Visitor Village" the first of its kind in the UK". The Visitor Village hosts a Welcome Centre, an activity room, the lakeside Reed Bed Restaurant, The Nest gift shop and Coots, which is the perfect place to get a quick snack.
You can help protect the local wildlife (including deer)by becoming a member.
J. W.
After many visits here from Liverpool, this remains a favourite. Lakes, reeds, pathways, woodland, sheep, cattle, herons & egrets all spotted today.
S. H.
Great day out for the whole family. Cafe and toilet facilities. Great for walking and admiring nature .
A. A.
Lovely walk with the family.
Lots of puddles for the little one to splash in.
p. w.
Great place for a spot of bird watching or just for a walk. Not far from the M6 so a surprise to find a reserve in such a place. Visiter centre has a coffee shop and at certain times a restaurant to choose from. You have to pay to park but it is free to look around. Well worth a visit.
H. D.
First time visiting, and although we only visited the cafe as a stop point when cycling the Guild Wheel, I was very impressed. The facilities were clean, cafe was lovely, the external buildings looked great for educational trips and there was lots of people bumbling around with binoculars looking at the birds. 👍🏻
P. R.
Beautiful Sunday in September. Lovely steak and mushroom pie on the restaurant. Good value in beautiful surroundings.
P. W.
Great walks and trails for all the family. A genuine great day out.
A. H.
Excellent. Perfect what ever the weather. Just be prepared to get muddy if it's raining. But great for kids to go exploring and learn about all sorts of creatures.
a. m.
Quiet but weather was frosty and we,d had some snow
K. A.
Good day out plenty to do outside in the freash air,and for £5.00 five of us including grandchildren £1.00 each.
J. H.
Fantastic place to see wildlife ever so friendly and helpful
S. L.
Really nice .well laid out .tricky entrance of a really busy round about if your not sure follow the quarry entrance signs .shame its not dog friendly sure it would see a lot more visitors cant see what the problem is about dogs .really .nice venue for the wedding we attended .well organised too

Great place very nice scenery great for kids too
D. W.
Absolutely beautiful walks! Even though it is busy you never see anyone. Very peaceful! 💖 💖 Loved it 💖💖
H. B.
A fab day out especially when the weather is good and free too. Just pay for parking!!
J. F.
Fabulous place for a walk and to observe the wildlife. Got a great deal for afternoon tea so a brilliant end to the walk as well.
D.
Great trails
Excellent park
Friendly community
Lovely river
Great nature getaway, feels like a different country!
Would definitely recommend!
A. W.
Great place to go with the family whatever the season, pleny of parking on site, nature trail, activity park and cafe. Easy to spend a few hours here.
S. J.
Lovely nature reserve and the staff were all really friendly. Sadly we spent too long watching wildlife and missed the cafe
T. R.
Peaceful and beautiful place with relavent shopping amenities, added to this a cafe with a good variety of choice and all surrounded by bird filled wetlands.... I can't stay away 🙂
E. S.
Great place for a family walk, play, day out. Great use of an old industrial area.
J. M.
Just an incredible place to go. Very educational and therapeutic.
S.
We walked miles in this fabulous nature reserve, brought picnics in our back packs, but enjoyed the shop and cafe.
Rivers, lakes, well signed paths, fabulous staff.
Lots of parking. Woods, play areas, climbing, den building, superb day out for our 3 teens. Highly recommended.
N. T.
Well worth a visit. Plenty to see and do. Great park for the kids, and the floating village and cafe are a lovely little break from the vast walk.
K. E.
Great place. Pretty views, few lovely trails, picnic tables and a lot of playground for kids with small zip wires, pumpkin carving shop etc. I really enjoyed long walk and the paths were well marked and maintained. A lot of bird watching stations. I would recommend for nature lovers.
A. B.
Prestons hidden gem. Beautiful place, so peaceful and clean. Well worth a visit.
K. K.
Great place. Different architecture in use.Nice walk around the lake.
R. A.
Lovely place, good view and wonderful to walk around
G. D.
£5 to park which is a bit steep if you are arriving at half 3 for tea and cake, but the information online said it was open til 5. Sadly we were asked to leave at 4 as the floating village was closing. Possibly they had just changed to winter hours, possibly it was the private hire. And I never got my cake. But while we were there we enjoyed the swans, a heron and would have stayed longer in the hide, but the light was fading fast.
S. C.
Great place for a visit, ride your bike or go for a walk. Parking was bit pricey
V. B.
Great place for kids to run free, picnic and learn some stuff as well.
R. J.
Wow, what a treasure. We were here for 5 hours and enjoyed every minute. The walks are just perfect. Beautiful setting, wildlife and very well maintained. Staff very friendly too. Highly recommended
H. J.
Monday 21st June but if a chilly day. Took grandson & he enjoyed the play area & watching the wildlife, the hide was closed apparently every Monday. Took our own picnic but bought coffee & hot chocolate from takeaway. Will definitely go again, £5 for all day is good as goes back to upkeep if reserve.
T.
To be fair we went in early January, so it was wet and cold. And most the area was flooded and muddy. And nothing looked very nice. Also as it's right next to a main road the noise was actually shocking. In some parts it sounds like a jet is taking off. You can't hear any wildlife. That's not the parks fault obviously, but if your hoping for a quiet walk listening to nature forget it all you will hear is the roar from the road. The restaurant part is ok, the sausage barm was really nice. However I think calling one part Kestral kitchen (I think that's what it was called) is a bit misleading, I as well as plenty of others walked into it thinking it was another big cafe with maybe a big buffet style area, but it's not, it's just an added huge seating area. Warm with plenty of room, but not an extra cafe or buffet. However maybe it is from spring onwards. I suppose if your a wildlife enthusiast then you will know which animals and birds are around and at which time to look, so fair enough you will enjoy the seasonal wildlife. I'm more into scenery and peace so if you are like me, maybe wait until spring through to autumn, and maybe leave the winter, I can imagine it's really nice then.
W. L.
I am not a bird expert but went here to have a look and get a bit of exercise walking round the site. Enjoyed the walk we saw Roe Deer, lots of water birds and then a hare. Had a coffee at the visitor centre which was also very nice. The amazing thing about this place is there is so much wildlife so close to the motorway, the only downside is the noise of the traffic is still quite intrusive even at the farthest point away from it. Overall it was an enjoyable few hours and I will visit again.
L. L.
Lovely place.. Long walks and short walks for all.
D. R.
Floating visitor centre, great zip line, beautiful nature all around, and all for just a measly £5 parking fee, bargain
D. C.
Not for me but great for kids, some shops but nothing special, could do with more activity's, better shops and something to atract people there
J. K.
Nice outing having 3 young kids with us. Free kids activity of planting sunflower seeds was a good call. They loved it.
m. p.
I had a wonderful experience at this amazing place, lots of beautiful wildlife and I enjoyed exploring the floating village.
L. H.
Really enjoyable walk around. About 2 miles, took just under an hour. Beautiful place to have a coffee afterwards on the water. Cafe was reasonable, prices ok.
£5 parking, which I was aware of. Was OK with it, as it contributes tothis beautiful area
J. D.
Lovely relaxing walks, fun trying to spot something among the trees.
R. G.
Fantastic tranquil wedding venue to check out for your big day.
a. j.
Fantastic day trip. Good for children and all ages.
C. D.
Brilliant country park
Clean, tidy, and beautiful.
Full of fun areas for the lite.ones, and full of nature for a keen Mummy butterfly spotter and a Daddy bird watcher!
Lovely playground although some renovation currently ongoing.
Great ice cream too.
T. H.
Even in the winter it's a great place to visit. Great wildlife walks from 20 minutes up to 2.5 hours. Nice cafe. Lots for kids to look at and do.
s.
It's ok. A good day out with kids to the play area. Lots of Wales but no dogs allowed and the noise if the motorway everywhere. We were a little bored.
T. G.
Wonderful grounds and lake made for a great day.
C. L.
This an utterly beautiful part of Lancashire. Deer, insects, ducks and birds all easy to see in their natural habitat. A fabulous orienteering trail with views over the river and lakes. A brilliant play area with zip wire. I loved it and so did the 135 people who accompanied me on our school trip.
S. B.
Mother's Day afternoon tea was delicious and great value for money! Lovely venue and great walk through the woods afterwards. 100% recommend.
D. M.
Had a good time walking round and taking photos of the wildlife
S. P.
This was a wonderful place to visit. The view and the facilities were great. The only downside was that the Peckish food kitchen took way too long to serve our food and put sour cream on our vegan order which wasn't helpful as we then had to wait longer again. Not to mention that the shared outdoor tables were incredibly wobbly.
However, it is a beautiful place in general and the wildlife is clearly well respected there.
M. D.
We had a fabulous day... John who took us on a guided walk was amazing. We even had a Robin eating from our hand. Highly recommended.
S. H.
Very beautiful place with lovely walks.
Play area is good but not much to entertain children fir longer than about 20 minutes. The best part is the woodland trails where they have little fairy gardens etc hidden in the woods. Not really accessible for anyone with mobility issues or prams though. Overall it's a nice couple of hours out but I wouldnt travel far for it and not enough to fill a day with. Car parking is £5 which for an occasional visit is ok but for a local who might just fancy nipping to the cafe for some lunch it's pretty steep. I think a timing system would be more fair to allow people who just want to visit the floating shop area. The food in the cafe is overpriced, I saw a cheese pasty on the menu for £5.95. The icecream however is amazing, I had honeycomb and It was the best icecream I have had for a very long time!
I. S.
Nice place to explore, muddy in places, plenty for kids of all ages, including adults! Pay to park, it all goes into the reserve, one price for however long you are there.
A. S.
Amazing place. Beautifully kept, really enjoy walking around with my 2 year old and seeing the wildlife
S. S.
Love the Deep dark wood gruffalo carvings to find.
Playground is great for children.
S. G.
Beautiful place to walk for a few hours, its alive with birds, with different habitats to explore. Parking is £5 all day, footpaths are all very well kept, staff are friendly and helpful. Small coffee shop on site. Will definitely return as the seasons change to see how the diverse habitats evolve.
V. C.
Great place for a walk and pram friendly throughout. Some things eg toilets not sign posted very well but lovely staff are more than happy to point you in the right direction. Cafe is a little pricey and £5 for parking. But hey its needed for up keep and staff wages 😁 all in all a very nice place with beautiful walks and lots of wildlife 😀
C. B.
Lovely walks, play park for the kids, beautiful scenery.
m. k.
Great place to bird watch
S. B.
Great outdoor space to get in touch with wetlands wildlife, whether you're a twitcher or not. A trail through nearby woodland offers nice variety too.
L. M.
Lovely area to watch birds and if lucky see other wild animals such as deer. There is a 'floating' visitors centre where you can get information and food.
J. M.
If you ever go there you and you family will have a great time
C. W.
£5 Expensive for the car park. No wonder so many park just off roundabout...
Thanks for the response below. I fully understand everything you say and it is our fault for not researching before our visit. We stopped on the way home one day to see what it would be like for our Grand Daughter so we were not planning a full day with picnic etc.
We will definitely be re-visiting....
J. D.
Wonderful walks! Very big totally enjoyable!
k. E.
Lovely walks and kids had fun exploring the outdoors.
Friendly staff in the cafe, clean and so relaxing just watching nature pass by
C. K.
Excellent day out with young kids (2 and 5). Wind in the willows and gruffalo sculptures were a bit, as was the excellent adventure playground. Great that dogs are not allowed as don't have to worry about them coming up to your kids nor worry about poo. Cheap day out as only pay the £5 parking charge
A. D.
Great nature reserve with good facilities on the floating visitors centre. Great setting and nice walks that seem to be in the middle of nowhere yet are only metres from the M6 motorway.
r. k.
Beautiful place, very knowledgeable staff, good facilities
M. P.
1st time we've been here and have been meaning to pop in as we only live in Skelmersdale so not far at all. £5 parking for all day which is great. The visitors centre is very informative and loads of volunteers on hand to have your questions asked. Food in the cafe was good too and reasonably priced. Looking forward to returning.
S. D.
Beautiful place and friendly staff. Food/drinks expensive and not very good quality. Bread was slightly stale and served in a polystyrene carton, premium priced coffee but low quality.
K. P.
Lovely wild nature reserve, unfortunately it was raining when we visited which dampened everyone
R. R.
Lovely place to visit
But 5 pounds parking not nice
A. P.
Gorgeous nature reserve offering wonderful sights and food
L. D.
Lovely place to visit and walk around. The choice for lunch was disappointing and so was the cake selection.
D. “. H.
Really lovely place. Went to a wedding here. Had a great time in beautiful surroundings.
N.
Great day out map reading and having autumn fun
T.
Great alternative stop on the m6. Playground suitable for children aged 6 to teens. Good cafe on platform in middle of lake with ducks walking between tables. They will take food if they have a chance - even out of your hand!
S. P.
Brilliant place to come for a nice day out walking.
Very good when I saw a deer and its baby. 😊
L. E.
It is £5 to park.DO NOT try to evade this because there are vehicle recognition cameras all over. The money raised however goes back into maintaining this beautiful reserve. Some of the shops are not fully open because of covid. This is a great place for letting children explore. There are guides/volunteers to assist you in your adventure.
Despite plenty of bins the amount of litter collected each day is disgraceful so take it home with you.
S. B.
They need their cafe to open for a bit longer, need to get or put, parersals on all there, tables outside, the cafe, as they may get more customers. If they did this. As I feel they are missing a big trick, if they don't do this. Also I have seen dog poo, there were you shouldn't be. Seeing it at all.
K. R.
Brilliant place for the kids. The cafe is good, prices steep but they always are in these places. Lovely setting and the bird watch house is brilliant
N. E.
Lovely place, only stopped for a coffee so parking was a bit pricy but if your going for a walk there £5 parking is a steal (so next time I'm gona grab a coffee and go for a walk because it looks beautiful)
F. G.
A fantastic place for all the family with plenty of things to do... and nature in abundance
G.
Beautiful location, great facilities with lots of parking.
A. S.
Nice place for day trip 👌
s.
Very peaceful even on a busy bank holiday
D. K.
Beautiful nature reserve. Plenty car parking. Fantastic floating village. Cafe and little shop. Covid 19 spoiling the shops being open but overall it's a great walk and well kept. Take walking boots or wellies on a wet day. Families and couples will enjoy this circular walk
M. Z.
Lovely tranquil place to sit or walk watching the wildlife. Especially nice to sit next to the lake with your lunch and see geese and the heron
B. B.
Some cows or horses in the neighbouring fields I loved it
L. E.
Nice nature reserve, we saw two roe bucks down by the river.
B. A.
Nice place with lots of walks, but the current set price of £5 for parking feels a little excessive when arriving at 3pm considering it's the same price for those arriving first thing in the morning. It's also unclear from the maps where the new path referred to on social media actually is.
s. h.
A brilliant morning pond dipping and afternoon playing in the park. Lovely ice creams and a cafe. Eco friendly toilets and plenty of available and knowledgeable staff. Always so much to do. Car parking is a fiver but it goes back into the reserve and we could easily spend all day here.
S. M.
A great place to stop on a motorway journey, way way better than any services. Unfurtunatly tho not free to park here.
A. M.
Fantastic day out.
Great play area for children.
M. T.
Took my grandchildren had a lovely time walking round the beautiful countryside. Beautiful wood carvings. Amazing two level play area. Watched birds on the lake. Excellent.
S. “. H.
Fab natural place if you like birds and other wildlife, watch out for the dragon flies!!
L. M.
I hope the £5 parking fee goes wholly to the nature reserve.
Disappointed that dogs on leads aren't welcome.
Usual large Cafe is closed which is disappointing too, the complex looked like it needed renovating.
Could do to have more welcoming information and staff to inform visitors what's going on at the centre.
Felt a bit neglected.
Maybe above points due to covid, but things should be looking up now.
O. N.
Fantastic buildings and surroundings. Average cafe, if you require gluten free food bring your own.
P. T.
Can't believe this peaceful haven is beside the M6 motorway, one of those hidden gems.
C. C.
Lovely visit to the Christmas market and cafe. The food was ok, they had a breakfast with santa on so maybe it had been out a while?
The views and the floating visitor centre are just amazing
C. M. L.
Only able to take a short walk there as was there watching my daughter in an outdoor show, but what l saw really impressed me. The shop and service centre closes at 5pm but the rest of the reserve is open until 9pm. Wooden figures of toad and badger dotted about the place. I saw some pheasants and lots of dragon flies and another species of birds l could not quite make out. The buildings very impressive. It was lovely and peaceful whilst l was there. There are 1hr and 2hr walks within the reservation. The parking is £5.00 for all day or £3.00 for so many hrs. Well worth a visit. No dogs allowed. Ideal for a family day out. There is also a swing park for children and plenty of places to have a picnic.
R. P.
Lovely day out! Always have little hunts for children. The childrens park is nice and the cafe overlooking the lake is beautiful. It's quite expensive to eat and drink but you could take a picnic. In the peak periods car parking is £5.
H. B.
Nice area to walk, lovely views over the water. The food at the cafe was great and facilities were clean
J. P.
Just a wonderful place full of wildlife and beautiful countryside.
i.
cool place :)
m. p.
More to see later in year. Not massive choices for food. Still worth visit. Be aware parking £5 however long you stay.
B. M. a. t. X.
Beautiful! Great walk, nice playdate for the kids, which is quite big! Great cafe/ice cream....social distancing now in place and hand sanitizer all over the place which is great. Lots of wildlife to spot and places to sit and just relax. A good day out. Carpark is £5 but money goes to the upkeep so worth it👍👍 xx
F. C.
Had a great day exploring.. we were there five hours with a picnic.. perfect for summer holiday day out
V. I.
Easy parking (Payable)
Cafe a bit boring well not really in use.
Saw about 7 different birds.
Unique site as it is fooating
K. P.
A great day out for all. Well worth a visit. We had afternoon which was really good. Would definitely visit Brockholes again
D.
This place is fantastic for the kids and adults who like nature walks that are not strenuous as it's all flat walking . Good activities for the kids with a play park and challenges which you can purchase from the main office . At the time we went the parking is £5 for the whole day and entry to the reserve is free . There is a restaurant , toilets , gift shop , information centre on the amazing floating vistor village which has to be seen ..
The wildlife there is pretty good with plenty of birds to see and we even saw a deer !
Overall not a huge trek like I'm used to doing but I found it very relaxing and stress free .
S. H.
Great place, wide open spaces, Covid 19 rules followed throughout.
Plenty of walkways, you don't need to follow a set trail just loose yourself in the time you have. Kids play area great . Plenty to do and see. It is the Northwest of England so prepare for all weathers .
C. D.
At times it's hard to believe this reserve is so close to the busy M6. It's lovely to walk by the river and the lakes. On our last visit we saw about a dozen cormorants perching on the man-made islands. There's a good play area for young children. The café is currently serving takeaway drinks & food but it's currently not open Mondays/Tuesdays. Items from the gift shop have been moved into what is normally the seating area but it is not available for purchase - hopefully it will be once restrictions are lifted.
J. K.
I arrived early, before visitor centre opened. I wandered aimlessly for 2 hours as no sign posts anywhere. The cafe was very good, I enjoyed my breakfast. I really wanted to like this place, travelled from Midlands and heard good things about it but the hides were just metal bus shelter type buildings and very overgrown in front of them so very difficult to do any photography. As it stands, I can't recommend this place, sorry.
t. p.
Parked my car away from other cars came back was scrach marks on my new car was really upset as It was my first ever visit and the staff were really helpful and the people were nice and it was a great park for walks with your family with prams and wheelchair access it's great. so really surprised that my car was Scratch marks on it.
S. r. w.
Lovely day out, we always enjoy coming. Need some litter bins near the park and we weren't comfortable getting in line for ice cream as it was a mile long but the scenery and reserve is beautiful
J. H.
Love this place. I am a regular visitor. Everything from the wildlife, the surroundings, the people and the restaurant are all fabulous. The floating village is a joy in itself. Well done to all the volunteers without whom the place would not continue. This is why the carpark charges are necessary. And you can actually see how your money is being used if you go regularly as it always evolving. Highly recommended for all ages. The playground and activities for children are fantastic so for a family it is ideal. My partner and I went to the spacious restaurant and although there were many families we felt it was restful and calm. The view onto the water was beautiful and romantic. So I recommended it for couples too. The food is super and good value. Service is prompt and efficient and everyone is very friendly.

Wonderful location and setting. Good facilities, though not yet fully reopened following the pandemic. Lovely walks, with many wild flowers. Good children's play area.
d. a.
An excellent nature reserve. Very suitable for children with trails and play areas. Also walks around the water with plenty of hides for spotting the wildfowl in the area
Z. E.
Beautiful place, something different and has a nice trail for a good walk 👍
C. S.
Nice place to have a walk around and activities for everyone.
V. P.
The Easter trail was really fun. Definitely recommend to families with both younger and older children. There are two trails to choose from one for the younger children and one for the older children. The children loved the playarea too. Cheap family fun afternoon.
G. S.
Good experience for the children using the crafting materials but the ridiculous idea of having the Easter bunny locked in a room created an hour long queue that everyone complained about. Never again
K. A.
love this place so much we are getting married there
P. M.
First time we've visited. Definately won't be the last. We did the 2 hr Forest School activity and it was great value for money. My 6 year old daughter loved it. Especially making a Viking medallion!
The excellent playground(s) were a bonus we didn't expect as well. Fortunately she's just big enough for the activity ropes and big slide.
C. D.
Lovely place to walk and enjoy nature!
We took our little girl here for a wander around the woods and she loved it! Would definitely recommend to anyone who likes being outside:)
C. W.
Great place for walks and food and drinks. I love it here
J. S.
Great place. Loads of birds and wild plants. Had a brew and cake in the cafe Lady in visitor centre was really helpful.
D. S.
Spent a two-three hours here walking around the reserve as well as the play area. Worth the parking cost for the amount of time that can be enjoyed here. Toilet facilities available. Particularly useful stop off point when on long journeys.
J. M.
A lot of outstanding work has been carried out recently my volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities for amateur photographers to get some unique photos of wildlife
M. G.
Great family walk, followed by a scone in the cafe. Excellent starling murmuration on the walk back.
R. B.
Lovely place but scandalous parking charges. Needs an option for a shorter stay at a cheaper price. It costs £5 full stop. Also the place could do with a few more picnic benches out around the walks. Although part of me thinks that this is part of the ploy to get you to spend more in their own cafe. Lovely place spoiled by cost of a trip there.
P. D.
Had a great day out took elderly mother and she found walking around reasonably easy. Cafe is OK though menu limited though what we had was lovely and glad to see kids menu so reasonably priced. Also found site staff very helpful and friendly.
R. P.
Great place for family day out
N. K.
Great clean facilities, you can see a lot of money has been spent on it, we saw ospreys, kestrels, a heron, dragon flies and your usual wetland type birds. Around the visitors centre is nice and quiet but there is no getting away from the noise of the M6 on the trails.
N. S.
Nature at its best, but take your own food! Cafe leaves a lot to be desired!
P. H.
Excellent nature reserve, fairly flat footpaths. Lots to see birdwise with varied habitats. Very enjoyable day. Food served was certainly as good if not better than similar reserves very good service and cheerful and helpful staff. Very good visitor centre. I would recommend a visit if you like nature at any level of expertise. Looks like a good playground too but being 72 years old I am a bit too old to try it.
G. T.
You could get list here... lots of walks of varying lengths. Lots of chances to see birds in their natural habitat. Only pay for parking which is great to see. No entry fees.
D. B.
Stopped here whilst on bike doing Guild Wheel.
Really nice place to visit, great for families and to bring a picnic or enjoy the food from the cafe.
(don't bring dogs as not allowed)
p. j.
Amazing place to go!!! It has the best ever play area for the kids. When we were there a kestrel dived and caught it's pray then flew off with it...right in front of us! it is a great nature reserve....lots to see and do. The kids enjoyed the activity, looking for the clues as we walked around, much fun!! We will definitely go again!!
K. O.
Great place to visit, would suggest you wrap up if going in the early months. Very friendly staff wanting to tell you about the place and were to walk, good for children wanting to learn about wild life. One bit of advice the car parks are around the back with parking meters it's £3 per visit and nothing else to pay. They are monitored with CCTV so don't think you can get away with it 😀
V. T.
Fantastic, so much for the whole family :)
T. G.
Not usually a fan of a place like Brocholes but I really enjoyed my visit. Scenic trails plenty of space for my dog to run around and the parking charge is not too bad. Also the staff are lovely especially the waiter we had in the Cafe who was brilliant and the sorbets were delicious 😋 - will definitely be visiting again.
B. B.
The nature reserve is great. Lots of water birds to see and the woodland surrounding the lakes are full of wildlife. Well made paths and bird hides help to spot the more timid species. Bit noisy on the motorway side. Shame about the café and other buildings being designed to look like a prison. Why people have their wedding here I'll never understand. Such dismal and dreary buildings.
P. C.
Lots of walks for all ages, children's play area and cafe. Definitely recommend a visit
C. F.
A lovely place to amble round, even in these difficult times and cold wet weather! Cafe open for takeaways, toilets open, for a £5 parking fee it's a bargain and you're supporting the wildlife Trust.
Photo of room used for schools, near cafe.
O. P.
Lots of physical activities for kids, great play area. But can be very muddy! Lots of wildlife to spot - bring binoculars! Excellent quality food - limited choices but tasty & substantial portions. Perfect for families, but a bit pricey. Really friendly staff. Great little museum expo. Fun for all. Great day out if you like fresh air and water.
P. I.
It's a wonderful place to visit.
G. M.
Lovely cafe and friendly staff. The path around the reserve is very flat and easy access. Great for anyone who can't do long walks
M. G.
Great place for nice stroll... Flat and easy access. Fantastic wild life - spotted a deer as we drove in. An abundance of different birds to watch and there are hides to watch water birds.
The only draw back was the midges. They had a good feast on me, for sure.
P. H.
Had a wonderful weekend with Crafty Vintage floating on the lake. The sunsets have been spectacular. The staff have been full of fun:-) A real joy. Look forward to seeing you next year. Thank-you & Merry Christmas to all. Xx
L. H.
An amazing place to visit. Even with young families. Play park is awesome. Looks as idyllic in winter as it does in summer. Watching the moorhens skiing over the iced water on landing. Really excellent restaurant and shop is great for gifts and keepsakes. Guided tours, picnic areas. All just 30 minutes from Manchester 2 minutes off motorway but in the middle of nowhere at the same time. £3 to park in winter £5 to park in summer that's it no other entrance fees. Best conservation area for fun and watching the wildlife.
M. l. C.
This nature reserve has a floating cafe which is interesting in itself.I cycled there within a group from a local park in Preston.Mostly off road , on part of the guild wheel. Large areas for children to run round & explore but no dogs allowed because of the wild life. But to be sure check the web site.
C. A.
Amazing morning out with my children and friends. Love this place. Always lots to do and see of you like the outdoors and are proactive. We took part in sports challenge where you explore the reserve following a map and you have to find some tricky hidden pictures, then answer sporting questions. kids loved it but I think I enjoyed it more.
Excellent cafe and toilet facilities. STAFF are always very friendly and interact with the children.
Please note: whether your coming for 10 minutes or the day, the car park is a bit pricey at £5 and the cafe prices are not cheap but good quality.
A. H.
A great walk out with the family
N. N.
Good place for an easy walk. Good cuppa in take away cafe. Quite quiet today so very pleasant. Trail for children.
V. T.
Great family day out, lovely cafe and the ice cream stall is very popular - big queues though! Lots for children to do. The play area caters for children of all ages and the den area was just great.
My only gripe with the place is the cost of parking, at £5 a day in summer I think it's expensive, especially for Lancashire WIldlife Trust members.
R. R.
Living most of my life in and around Preston this is one place I've never visited up until recently. It is a great place to have a nice walk and integrate with wildlife also informal for the kids too. We had a bite to eat in the cafe and was very pleased with what was available and not too pricey. Would reccomend anyone to at least have a look around and get with nature.
S. G.
Very nice walks through the countryside
A. B.
Such a fantastic place to go, there's a bit for everybody here and yet it's still a place for nature fundamentally. There's some lovely walks around the water and into Boilton Wood, and there's always loads of butterflies and dragonflies around in the summer. There's also a play area for children to enjoy too. Thank you to all the hard work that goes into maintaining the place, it really is a wonder of the north!
R. D.
Lots of walkways and good kids playground. Things looked a bit run down and neglected, probably due to covid. Not enough access to viewing points. £5 to park the car. Same price as Sandringham
F. C.
Definitely a place to visit, lovely walk and friendly staff
R. R.
Beautiful walk! It was really, really hot when we went so unfortunately didn't actually see that much wildlife!
Cafe was great too :D
A. B.
Lovely place, much fun had! Only issue was that there were no signs by the car park to say the machines were out of order (one machine appeared to be working but wasn't) and that we had to nip into the center to pay. But a tiny wrinkle with a brilliant place staffed by lovely people!
S. N.
A good place to explore on a damp winter's day. Ideal for all. We had a walk around the trail - about 2 miles. Lovely to watch the birds feeding in the woodland. Cafe was good too.
A. B.
It was a lovely walk around there. Flat walk. Many small children were there too. Nice play area. A good nature reserve. Seen beautiful swans. Nice small floating viillage with a gift shop, an activity room and a restaurant to have tea/coffee, brunch or lunch after a good walk in the forests around.
J. H.
Always have a great time here, it's a must visit for all the family.
L. H.
Great day out. There are a few different walks that cater for people of all abilities. The cafe serves a good variety freshly cooked food, although the food is very nice, it isn't the cheapest. A day out here can become quite expensive if eating there.
M. H.
Lovely peaceful place. Pease support the reserve when you visit, they rely on funds from parking and retail sales.
A. H.
We've been a few times in the last year and we love it here. The kids absolutely love it. The parkland is very well maintained with lots of different paths around the wooded areas. The kids love exploring the smaller paths/tracks that actually go through the woods. There are wooden carvings (Gruffalo, mouse, snake, owl) to find, mini swings, dens building, paths to follow. There is plenty to keep the kids amused. After that, there's the play area, which is amazing! Even when we've been on busier days I would still recommend it as the equipment is spaced out well, with lots of running around up be done. There is also a good variety for different age groups.
£5 to park the car for as long as you like, an absolute bargain of a day out.
M. C.
Great few hours with a 6 yo. Had fun completing the Halloween trail, burnt off some energy on the play area and had a nice lunch. Just £5 to park all day.
I. p.
Enjoyable and relaxing. Great views, paths and places to sit. Interesting shop with friendly staff and a few unususl bits and bobs. Worth a visit if you've never been and you like nature reserves.
Also, car parking costs contribute to keeping the place going.
L.
One of the best nature reserves I have ever visited so far despite it being local. The lunch is great, the areas are peaceful, the landscape is amazing, and the ice cream is so good that I was about to ask for more.
F.
Nice place to go for some 'me' time, or to take the kids. The surrounding nature, water and birds help restore clarity to clouded thoughts. The only negative is the loud sound of the nearby M6 - though it is easy to tune it out.
M. C.
I always enjoy coming here, it's as simple as coming for a coffee and sitting outside and watching the birds, or getting some air in your lungs and taking to the walks on offer. Great for couples and families as there's a park / play area for the children. A must visit five pounds all day parking. Go now
K. B.
What a lovely place and completely free except for the car park. Wonderful day out, lots of different routes to take and things to see. They even sell bottles of beer in the cafe for a quick one before heading home. Such a brilliant place.
C. R.
Absolutely loved visiting. We spent a whole day here on two separate occasions and there was still more for us to explore. The parking is £5 which is you arrive early enough and stay for long enough is great and you can really tell that they are investing that money back into the place because there are lots of trails and sculptures and wildlife to enjoy. Will certainly be returning!
A. L.
Great place to go explore and see loads of wildlife. Great to see no dogs to leave mess or distress the wildlife. The floating buildings are worth a visit too. Few £ to park but that all goes to the running and upkeep and all 2 mins from the motorway.. but makes you feel hundreds of miles away.
G. W.
Lovely location, enjoyed our visit. Walks are pram friendly which is fab. The visitors centre is interesting to look at. Very easy to get to, just of motorway. Will visit again.
R. Q.
Gorgeous setting and I loved the way when you were sat in the restaurant area it felt like you where sitting in the Lake! Went today for afternoon tea, very expensive, very good but very expensive and didn't really get that much would have been disappointed if we'd paid full price but we had a Groupon voucher. And then parking was £5, now £5 is reasonable if your going to go and enjoy the scenic walks and parks available and your making a day of going. But if your paying £70 for afternoon tea leaving hungry and then you have pay extra for parking aswell I thought it was steep.
C. C.
Fantastic site for spotting and learning about wildlife or just enjoying a walk. Great visitors area, activities for the kids and a lovely cafe and gift shop. The adventure play area and woods are brilliant too. A great morning or afternoon out any time of the year.
M. M.
This is such a lovely get away, where you can enjoy the peace of nature. The motorway can be heard in some parts but mostly it feels like you are miles away the rush of town life.
It's a great place to take the children with easy walk for them to enjoy, activities at the visitors centre and of course the playground.
P.
Fantastic facility. Lots of outdoor activities...kids playground, den building, nature walks. Cafe, homemade ice cream and gift shop on site. Cheap family day out (only paid for parking and lunch for 6 in the cafe was less than £40) plenty of picnic spots too. Great place
P. H.
Easy to find off M6. Ample parking. Stone paths through nature reserve. Great floating restaurant and shops. Excellent gruffalo trail. Find the animals. Whilst we were there we went to the reptile exhibition. Awesome. Well worth a visit.
J. D. V.
Great for walking and bird watching. Play area for children. Friendly staff. Well worth a visit
A. U.
Got to pay for parking but a lovely large site and play area you can stay here all day. Visitor centre and shop worth a visit, on a floating platform on the water. Cafe does good food at a reasonable price.
J. B.
Brilliant afternoon spent with my son. Started with lunch which was really tasty. Then a relaxing walk around the reserve, taking in the fresh air and the beautiful scenery. Returning to the restaurant for a much needed warm drink and cake which again was very tasty and reasonably priced.
J. B.
Lovely for a walk along the river, through woods or around the lake. Cafe for food on site. Parking £5
M. N.
Great place to spend time in nature either for a walk, run or a ride. It’s great for bird watching too as is has a few hides. It also has a visitor centre and recreational facilities for kids
a. o.
Lovely day out , good walks and play area for children. Also has a visitors centre with information pod on how the reserve was built (it floats) , cafe for food and drinks. You have to pay for parking but only £3 for the day
b. 1.
Fantastic nature reserve to take your kids as there is a play area near there is plenty to see and do with the wildlife plus a floating cafe stroke restaurant. Definitely recommend a visit
A. A.
Lovely walk around the site, however cafe has gone down hill in terms of service, options and quality.
J. Y.
A great day out. Lots of great views and activities.
B. T.
Great place to go with young kids. Good quality restaurant, reasonably priced. Excellent playground. Other activities organised on most days, my 4 kids did blackberry gathering and painting. It is also a nature reserve with varieties of birds and some grazing cows.
M. D.
We entered Brockholes and almost immediately we spotted deer, this was before we reached the car park, we saw four but may have been more. We parked up and went for a walk spotting a couple of kestrels the something large landed in a pond not sure what sort of bird but the ducks were making a lot of noise, we ended up in the cafe were we spotted a kingfisher and two buzzards the only criticism I could make would be it shuts at eight.
A. S.
Pleasant experience on a sunny summer day. Good to walk around including the forest part. Can cycle around, but better to walk.. Decent visitor centre with cafe. Unlike many other places no entry fee other than for car parking.
D. L.
Fantastic FREE facility (parking fee only).
Great place to ramble with the family and enjoy the bird life in each season of the year.
Large cafe serving snacks through to full hot meals provides stunning views across the wetlands.
D. W.
Nice place for a walk and there’s a decent sized play area for children. Bring your wellies if you’re going off the beaten track! You need to pay for parking.
P. A.
Halloween trail brilliant. Choice of easy with a pram or more difficult. Good fun looking for the symbols with a 7& 8 year old. Also a bonus to see when we visited, snakes & reptiles. Such a friendly group of snake owners letting children young & old touch or hold snakes, wonderful. A great cafe, a reasonably priced gift shop. We will certainly be back!
J. B.
Delicious luxury afternoon tea. Lots of small bits and pieces which were all perfect. The warm sausage roll tasted just like my mum used to make. Very relaxing and thoroughly delicious. I can recommend.
L. W.
Really pieceful place to visit, great to get into the outdoors and see all the natural animals and nature, worth a visit to be in peaceful surrounding
A. L.
Great day out, very family friendly. Restricted access for dogs but plenty walking for them around
p. m.
A great place to take the little one's and explore nature in an easy stress free way
L.
A great outdoor place for walks and bike rides .family friendly. Parking is ample you pay on your way out for the time spent there. There is a cafe to eat in. Great nature walks and a small.play area for children
R. M.
Cold, muddy fun. £3 to park for day until March. Paths mix of muddy and frozen and moment. Great place for a walk and bit of fresh air. Also checking out everyone's new Christmas hats!
D. B.
Such a lovely place to visit. We went to a Santa breakfast with our 2 and 5 year old and I couldn't recommend it enough. The food was delicious and there was plenty of hot drinks, I had a full pot of tea and my husband had a full cafitiere of coffee (probably enough for 4 people they were huge!) Santa was brilliant, so chatty and friendly and looked the real deal. The parking was free for the event. We had a walk around the reserve afterwards. Will definitely be returning.
J. H. B.
A great nature reserv and a must to visit
J. S.
Lots of walks around this reserve but short and long. Great on a nice summers day.
Parking is a little pricey at a flat £5 - especially if you only want to visit for an hour on a lunch hour.
k.
Fantastic place for a walk, especially if dry - lovely cafe on the lake. You have to pay to park, it is vehicle recognition - loved my walks here - full of memories.....saw my first wild deer here.
D. B.
A great family day out with lovely walks, a great playground and a nice café. There are usually lots of arts and craft type activities on throughout the year. Entry is free but car parking is quite expensive.
C. J.
Great out door space didn't find it to easy to follow paths
Great play area for children for all ages the lovely floating cafe shop and education center
Care needed on approach road as people park up and walk in to area to prevent paying the £5 parking (it goes to preservation!)
S. H.
Very much a DIY day out but nice walks but the playground was just ok as there were a number of 'rides' that were out of action. The children's lunch was very good as it allowed us to choose 5 items instead of being a 'set menu'.
M. H.
Nice place to have a break from long drive.
B. K.
A couple of walk routes here can be done in 1 hour (rather than the 3 hours on the literature) but only if your main purpose for being there is walking. If you are there for the relaxation and nature, there are several areas with different wildlife and flora. The floating "village" is an odd creation. A café, restaurant, visitor centre, indoor events room (with a craft market on when I was there) all make for quite a festive afternoon in the sun. People complain about the parking but it really isn't so bad. Just make sure you exit the car park in the allotted 6 minutes from payment!
D. D.
First time visit here my young grandson absolutely loved it & its very educational he learnt about nature & found things out here never knew which was amazing ..I will definitely be paying another visit & would fully recommend this place to others .
K. R.
Lovely place to walk round. Unfortunately for use not much bird life. Expect they are nesting.
D. B.
Me and my two young children always enjoy our days out here, plenty to do and see. Disappointed with the amount of litter on site on our last visit and also a couple of family's walking their dogs through the site as well.
S. W.
Went here for a uni conference, even though it was raining the views were great! Had a good lunch here too
j. b.
Very lovely and user friendly. Tons of wildlife and although busy, you can go for some time without bumping into anyone.
B. G.
The kids loved the Santa trail, the walk around the site was nice with some great views and the playground is one of the better ones, especially for active kids. Will definitely be going back in summer.
C. L.
Great walks and super scenery! Wildlife of all types as well...what more do you need. Ideal for all ages.
T. W.
Fantastic day out, if the weather is on your side. Brock holes has a brilliant outdoor 'adventure' style play area that can accommodate child young and old. There are a number of walks of varying lengths as well as a den building area to hone those shelter building skills.
The floating village normally hosts wildlife classes throughout the day (however i did go during half term). There is a restaurant, ice cream shop and lovely gift shop.
The parking is automated so you don't need to get a ticket but you have to remember your reg plate when paying.
Overall brilliant day out and have since been a further two times
P. C.
Floating village was interesting - must visit post-covid on a sunny day. Reserve is worth a visit, very muddy underfoot, would recommend suitable footwear. As you would expect, 'lookout' hide closed due to covid
A. P.
Amazing for days out! Although the car park is about £5 per visit, it's well worth it. Also, they have some amazing events to attend. Keep an eye out on there website.
S. R.
Lovely place. Saw frogspawn, damselflies, harvestman spiders, butterflies and lots of bird life. Attended the scarecrow walk, which might have just been a little too long for the kids. Then again it was baking hot weather. All in all a nice day. Be prepared to pay for parking. Quite expensive too.
L. H.
Still a very young nature reserve so still developing nipped for an evening walk not much on the ponds. Established woodland to side had a lot more to spot Car parking very expensive which does help support the place but I do find it prohibitive.
T. A.
A good day out. Would be nice if they had maps at crossroads to let you know where you are in the reserve.
It was raining when we went and still managed to see plenty of wildlife to keep you entertained and interested from the cafe views.
Used to just stop for the cafe in the past so would like to see a discount on parking if cafe is used and receipt presented when paying parking fees.
P. C.
Wonderful place to go alone or with children to enjoy the beautiful floating visitor center with it's nice cafeteria, and playground. Learn about rare birds and other wildlife on this nature sanctuary. They are doing a great job here.
D. S.
Not so much wildlife yet. But that will improve. Food expensive, but floating village very nice, as is cafe. Good half day out for family. Plenty of parking £3 in winter. £5 summer. No further fees for entry. Pay on exit. ANPR smart machine.
G. R.
A highly enjoyable day out, wonderful nature reserve, friendly staff.
£5 parking fee, which we thought very reasonable, considering there is no entry fee.
The only thing I would say is the pay machine is very confusing, we went to the gift shop to pay, the lady there could not be more helpful.
