£25 for family ticket - 2 adults and 2 children. Friendly staff and volunteers. Small museum but if you are a train enthusiast you'll enjoy it. Steam Train ride was cool for the kids. Didn't try the café as we brought our own food. Little playground beside it. 3-4hrs was good enough for us.
A. C.
Lovely steam railway. Doesn't get too crowded. Good prices. Interesting museum. Cafe. Souvenir shop with limited stock available. Just a shame that there's only one station at the moment for a round trip. In the future it would be great to have a second station as a destination. Gala days have a good atmosphere. Recommended.

Well this hidden gem is fantastic. Volunteers and workers are so lovely and enthused by engineering and history. Great for kids to get their imaginations going, and plenty of space to roam! Working railway behind the museum as well. The Santa train is amazing value for money, and everyone is so generous and kind. Free parking is a bonus. Also, amazingly allergy aware, providing gluten free alternatives, so impressive as our party had multiple allergies. So much thought to the place!

I am a volunteer steam engine Fireman. Attend the railway on Saturdays for passenger services from 11am to 3pm. Large museum and workshops to explore with a guide. Cafe and buffet car on train. Children's soft surface play area out side. Lots of railway memorabilia on display. Friendly staff all willing to make your visit a great day.
D. W.
A hidden gem along the old Docks of Preston. Guided tour of their engine house & workshops available. Ride their line as often as you like. Freshly prepared food available in their cafe, with a small souvenir shop. Full amenities on site.

First visit here. Good museum. Friendly staff. Plenty of parking . Problems with the steam engine on the day of our visit meant replacement with a diesel shunter but the 2 trips along the track were still enjoyable.
T. A.
Absolutely superb visit, I visited a few years ago and the facilities have improved tremendously. Family friendly and a great experience for young and old alike. The museum is well worth seeing and the train ride is authentic, money well spent
I. G.
Great place to see and experience, the cafe is a bit dated,no true bookshop on site and the museum shop is one wall, hardly any front of house staff? but it is a museum and living history not a theatre!!! pity the trains don't go to the station anymore it would be great to enjoy the living history with the public, occasionally vandalism and no regards for history are Preston's legacy for such a great time of its past.
d. f.
A lot of different trains in the museum, 3 mile trip up the line and back, café and under 10's play area. Good value.
r. l.
Absolutely fantastic day out for 5 yr olds who like trains (and adults!). Not too overwhelming and run entirely by volunteers so well worth an extra donation. Cafe nice with yummy scones and day rider ticket lets you go on the train as many times as you like. We did train, museum, train, play park, train, cafe, home. Excellent day out.
A. B.
Lovely family friendly steam train museum.
T. M.
A good day out with children. The museum has some of the oldest engines in the country. The trip on the train is also good. I was expecting a proper old style engine for the train.
Z. T.
We had an absolutely fantastic day at the museum. First off though at the end of our visit, I had left my car headlights on and flattened the battery. A lovely member of staff loaned us her car keys and left us with her car to try start it. Eventually it took a couple of the guys there pushing to get us going. After thanking the staff they asked me to leave them a good review. They needn't have bothered, I was going to anyway.
On arrival it was clear the staff had thrown themselves into the spirit of things. The museum itself had been decorated throughout. They had gone to a lot of trouble. Clearly signposted and with the covid in mind, handgel was abundant and it felt like everyone was on board keeping things running smoothly.
I can't understand some of the negative reviews on here. This isn't a corporate theme park, it's a labour of love and dedication and the volunteers are wonderfully dedicated. The museum, whilst small, has plenty of exhibits, information is abundant, the mail car was interesting in its own right. There was a little local history thrown in.
The train ride was a lovely throwback. The carriages clean and looked after. Whilst not a long ride, it was a nice way to cap off a visit. A superb treat for the kids with great Halloween themeing.
I wholeheartedly recommend people check this place out, and once again would like to extend my warmest thanks to the wonderful staff who came to our rescue.
W. R.
Nice and very peaceful place for a afternoon with the kids, facilities for wheelchair users are well catered for too. Staff are very helpful and friendly and if you are in to trains there definitely is so nostalgia to be had here.
A. S.
Very interesting little place enjoyed looking around and going for a little ride on the steam train. Also had our faces painted by the lovely lady there.
I. B.
Small but friendly and interesting. Interesting train ride through the dock area, plus museum, tea room and shop.
S. 2.
Excellent visit, took my train mad four year old who adored it. The museum is excellent and the regular train rides are a great experience. Not expensive and pleasant staff throughout. Definitely worth a visit for any train enthusiasts.
E. M.
What a fun step into Preston's history! There's fun in store for kids of all ages. The cafe was a treat and the steam train ride was awesome. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
P. R.
Great day out for the family has play area for the children. museum and you get to ride behind old British steam locos that are maintained in the workshops restored and repaired
D. T.
Stumbled upon this place whilst out for a walk around the docks. Nice place to take children as there is a pleasant steam train ride they would thourghly enjoy. We didn't eat or drink at the cafe but it looked pleasant and clean. Maybe next time.
R. S.
Although our booked time slot wasn't running it didn't spoil our trip.
Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and a wonderful short but sweet steam train ride.
d. q.
Lovely friendly staff, all volunteers too. Wheelchair accessible throughout and on the train. Worth buying membership if you intend on coming more than once a year.
p.
Nice unusual preserved railway. Very pleasant. Good scenery. Nice variety of locos great work shops. Lovely museum. Good prices. I spent about 3hrs here.
K. K.
Fantastic experience what a lovely day we had. steam train rude was brilliant. recommended people to go friendly staff from when you arrived to leaving.
M. E.
Interesting museum and enjoyable train ride, friendly staff. We also took advantage of the free circular open top bus ride taking place from the station to mark 100 years of the local bus company.
R. F.
Great afternoon out. Entry cost covered museum, workshop and all train rides (which were approximately hourly). Staff rail card gave a huge discount. Lovely little cafe with bacon butties, sandwiches, cakes and good coffee. Interactive displays, and everywhere accessible for all - Including riding on the trains. Train ride longer than I thought - and crosses the bridge at the docks.
A. G.
The Easter egg hunt was fun but very limited interaction with the trains and no access to the workshop at the moment. The train ride around the Dock is good fun for the kids.
S. F.
Great little place with some lovely attractions great day out lots to see and some nice walking too couldnt have asked for more
J. M.
Awesome day out. Very organised and well run station. I had no idea they had such a large collection.
S. M.
As a family we love going on steam trains, unfortunately this journey only last6about 10 minutes 1 way then the engine was taken of moved to the back of the carriage and went back to the station so it wasn't much of a journey but the museum was interesting
D. T.
A lovely, little gem! Great fun if your kids are obsessed with trains like mine, you can catch as many train rides as you like, have a go on the miniature track & special events contain even more. A small playground makes this a great all rounder for any age, worth visiting for a couple of hours
R. C.
It will be brilliant for steam train fans and little ones. Lot's of old trains to see in the museum part and their is a train running outside for a ride.
I only gave it 3 stars because a member of staff was very abrupt with my partner because she wanted to get off the miniature train, she suffers from motion sickness when we she moves backwards. So that put a downer on the day.
Overall I would say give it a visit if you like steam trains. The majority of staff were very nice. It was just the one rude man that ruined our experience. Hopefully you won't meet this man and have a nice visit.
M. N.
Quite friendly staff. It makes sense to be there at least 45 minutes before the train experience.
Spending time in the museum will add a lot more to trip
A. S.
Good afternoon attraction for my 2 year old daughter who loves cho chop's
Unlimited rides on the stream train
C. B.
Very fun to go to I would definitely recommend that best steam trains I have
ever seen
S. “. T.
lots of old working steam trains about! Lots of things to do and see. Plus a great ride on a steam train as well. Staff really nice as well
D. B.
It's a good museum, the entry price could be lower though.
A. E.
This is a great day out with family and friends especially when it is lovely and sunny. All of the volunteers are always very friendly and helpful and polite. I recommend that you visit this industrial railway.
M. M.
Visited Ribble Steam Railway for their Halloween themed weekend. The volunteers had gone to alot of effort to make it really special! They all dressed up in Halloween outfits and interacted with the children. It is a fairly small museum but with the train ride included, we spent a good few hours here. Lovely little cafe for a drink and a cake too!
J. C.
Lovely ride but quite short, ideal to take children on
a. j.
Fantastic hangout place for kids. A well maintained museum , activities for little ones and an amusing steam engine ride for all the ages including tots, moppets and woopies !
C. S.
Such a great day great for kids the eater hunt was expecially fun too
Only suggest I would have was maybe having hot food served in the cafe
S. F.
Lovely day out for all the family and staff were great.
E. S. (.
Hidden treasure down at the docks..a really fun experience for all ages. Perfect for all ages.
a. d.
Loved it, great day had by all. Will do it again
A. Y.
Ran by young and old volunteers with a passion. Very friendly. Not only can you go on the steam train but there is a museum. Although the journey is a short one it is well worth a visit
h.
We absolutely love this place! I take my son here as often as I can. One of his happy places! 🤗
c.
Lovely place with steam train rides along an old stretch of track. Lots of historical, restored vehicles and other bits and pieces. Also a lot of exhibits with white specific information for those who are super keen train fans.
G. C.
Very good, enjoyed the train ride, and the museum. We will definitely go again
D. P.
Lovely staff and great little museum.
S. C.
Fantastic experience, well done to volunteers
F. &. T. S. -.
The family had a wonderful time at the Easter special weekend! Friendly staff and a good morning out.
D. K.
Quite a short journey on a straight length of track. The ticket does last all day if you wish to .
A. W.
There are some fantastic old engines in the museum, which is much better in real life than the promo photos suggest. The journey on the train is only short in distance but lasts a good 45 minutes, showing Preston in a different light. Our toddler loved it!
I. B.
Kids love it has a good cafe
D. O.
Spur of the moment, never been before, what a fantastic time had by all.well done to the volunteers. Keep up the good work.
J. W.
Great value for money being able to travel multiple times on a single admission, never seen that before. Museum is small but there's a nice collection of trains from various decades gone by indoors in a good building.
M. C.
Sadly didn't get the chance to ride on a train. However the staff/volunteers could not have been more helpful. 10/10
H. H.
Only small, but great to take the kids to something "normal" - the volunteers are fantastic. When you get to the destination of your train ride and it stops - make sure you keep a look out on the right hand side for the engine passing you to turn around!
A. W.
Nice little railway with a lovely museum.
Great journey for little kids because the trip only takes a few minutes rather than the hour or two on larger railways
H. N.
Cheerful place with enthusiastic staff. Children are welcome and there are events planned with them in mind. Museum interesting and educational and is a mine of local history information.
R. M. (.
Small museum and short ride, but nice enough. Although as wheelchair users we had to sit in a guards type carriage rather than the more plush carriages
N.
Great spooky ride on the Halloween train this morning!
T. F.
Nice place, friendly staff, good short day out with the kids. Limited train ride compared to others.
C. H.
Great place. Relaxed and free to wander
A. P.
Good selection of industrial locos and stock. Some are on display while others are undergoing restoration, which is good to see.
s. m. (.
Great day out
S. S.
Great place for children, the museum was about right for young ones with enough information for those wanting to read the boards. The train trip was excellent and the whole experience great value.
P. T.
Great day fathers day treat for hubby from daughter. Good value £8 adult £5 concession nice cafe limited choice but there is hot food. Worth a visit kids will love it as there is a playground for the little ones
K. S.
We went to see Father Christmas and it was lovely, the staff were all friendly and the kids had lots of fun
G. m.
Just fabulous we SURPPORT people with learning disabilities been coming for years simple the best baaaaaaaaby..
S. W.
Very well run steam rail attraction with friendly and helpful staff and volunteers. Nice shop and cafe.
J. C.
A great day out with our grandchildren. They absolutely loved it. Thank you all.
s. w.
Fantastic little steam railway, and a lovely santa railway express. Kids loved it. Thanks everyone, keep up the good work. Merry Christmas
J. P.
The train journeys r fantastic. R 1st time ever pulled by a steam engine. And the carts r fantastic and well looked after. The 1st class cabins r really comfy. Really well priced. 20 quid for a family ticket. Great day all round
S. L.
It was very good value for money - you could ride on the steam train all day if you wanted. There was a big museum full of steam trains, with a little train ride for the children and other activities for them. Also a shop and a café. We took our 3 year old grandson and had a lovely time.
K. B.
A great activity to do and one my family and I should have done along time ago. The trip on the train was fun and festive seeing Father Christmas. The museum although small was a pleasure to see especially if you are into steam trains.
D. M.
Great little railway. Nice shed with some steam trains and carriages in it.
S. C.
We normally go to the East Lancashire Santa Special but this year we went here. The journey is much shorter but the staff/volunteers and Santa were lovely. The face painting was a nice touch. We loved the miniature railway and the ride on too. Thanks for a lovely time!
R. S.
Great place for the family. Nephew loves his trains so its a haven for him! Train ride is great and not overly priced. Even serves drink and snacks! The museum itself is also inyeresting and fun for the kids or any train enthusiasts.
L. G.
Brilliant! Spooky Halloween steam train. They had gone to a lot of trouble to make it a good trip. Staff all dressed up & very friendly. Little shop, cafe, museum, face painting, balloon making & outside a play area with slides & climbing frames etc A good afternoon out.
J. B.
This is our third visit here in the last 2 years. We bring our little boy who's now 4. He absolutely loves this place. We find the entrance price to be really good considering you can stay all day and go in the train ride as often as you'd like. There is a little gift shop and a cafe. On the train there's a buffet carvsrvind hot drinks, cold drinks and a variety of snacks. Only reason this is not a 5 star rating is on our visit there appeared to be problems with some of the lighting meaning it was quite dark in areas. Overall a great place to take the mini train enthusiasts.
A. H.
We booked for cream tea. Lovely little steam railway that has lots of little industrial steam and diesel locomotives. The train ride take just under 40 minutes there and back thought I think admission lets you ride the train as much as you want. Great museum exploring the history of Preston docks railways and industrial railways in the UK.
Very cheap for the price
L. J.
Visited late on a Sunday so couldn't ride the train. Great museum with lots of locomotives, many with Thomas and friends faces! You can ride the train for a short trip, which has 3 coaches, one being a restaurant car where you can have refreshments. The railway is run by enthusiasts, and a great place to take youngsters.
J. H.
Lovely way to pass a few hours with the Grandson.. All run by volunteers so happy to support & the Grandson enjoys his little train ride.. There is a cafe, shop & even refreshments served on the train.. Lovely staff who are passionate about what they are doing.. Enjoyed our few hours here.
L. M.
Great venue with access to the workshops too where you can see rebuilds in progress. Regularly runs a short train journey throughout their open/in steam days.
Plus a very well stocked gift shop of Thomas trains as you exit.
R. H.
An interesting morning or afternoon out for the family. Free parking, gift shop, caffe, and rides on steam hauled trains. The workshop, if open, is also well worth a visit showing the various stages of restoration in progress. Inside the exhibition hall is a collection of locomotives, carriages, a royal mail postal carriage, signalling equipment, railway signs, and the chance to ride on a miniature railway.
d. c.
Lovely little museum and steam train ride.
D. B.
What an amazing morning out. Loved by ourselves and the children and also dog friendly which is amazing for us. Highly recommend
S. S.
The Halloween event was amazing, staff were more than friendly and helped with any questions we had. Brilliant costumes and decorations all around
V. 6.
My 5 year old loved it. Bank holiday Monday lots of activities to get hands on. Mini train. Cafe shop and as many rides on the steam train as you want. All the engines had their faces on too
J. F.
We love this place! It's always great here with loads to do. The kids love seeing all the trains and going on the old steam train. The staff make this place awesome!
l. n.
Went at Halloween. Had a lovely day out. 4 year old loved riding up and down on the train.
K. J.
Had a fab afternoon on the Santa train, we had live music, mince pies and the kids got to meet Santa(real bearded) and loved the presents they got. Will definitely book again !
K. B.
'The Santa Express' - below par
Booked this some time ago for out 5 yr old twins thinking it would be a magical trip for them after seeing many good reviews - however, I cant honestly say that it met up to expectations. We dont have unrealistic expectations, and just ask that what we get is a fair reflection for the cost.
The trip was to take around 40 mins, with entertainment on board and a mince pie & port for the adults, and cookie and juice for the little ones. The main event is of course Father Christmas coming around and giving a gift the the children.
Once on the train the atmosphere was already good with the children all around in great spirits in anticipation of seeing the man himself, and for the first 10 minutes this continued to be the case, with a 2 man band playing Christmas songs and all singing along. Once they finished, Father Christmas came up, and the smiles of delight on the kids faces were brilliant!
So that was the first 15 minutes.
After this, there was still plenty of festive feeling, for a few minutes at least, but this is where it lost its spark sadly.
The train had been rumbling along at no great pace up to then but then just stopped, we were next to a busy road junction, with a retail outlet over the road.....and there we stayed........minutes past.......and then we started to crawl backwards slowly until.........we stopped.....some more road traffic views........and then crawled forwards again..........then back...then stopped....
so it went on, to the point we thought we had broken down.
it should be said that since the departure of the band, there was no music over any speakers, no toots of the stream engines whistle, no.....anything really. Our children and most of those around us had long since lost interest and were frankly bored, running up and down and annoying their parents by saying 'we're bored'!
We could have been sat anywhere really doing just this, there was no particular Wow! we're on a steam train feeling, but perhaps I'm affected by the crowded commute to work and back I do each day! We were just static with no great scenery to take in, unless you have a penchant for the contemporary retail park.
To be clear - the entertainment when it was there was great, father Christmas was brilliant, and the staff were lovely, this is more a case of stopping and starting and not particularly going anywhere, with kids getting bored - as they do - because there was nothing going on. For a fraction of the cost we could have gone to any number of Christmas parties within a couple of miles of home where there was much more to entertain the little ones. I think this is what was lacking after that first 10-15 minutes.
So, would I recommend? Sadly for this particular experience at the price required, I wouldn't go again. I'm sure at other times of the year, they have other rides that may provide more of a steam experience. I love steam trains, as do the kids, but I would want to find one that does actually give a better sense of being on one. I understand this track is around 3 miles long so I'm not expecting The Mallard to pull in for a full run, but I'm not convinced as to how much of those 3 miles we actually saw on the day we went.
Sorry I cant be more positive.
J. A.
Nice train ride cab go on as many times as it's a day rover ticket but only goes up and down the line and no stop at other end
Meuseam interesting . Cafe not dog friendly so lost a bit of money as would of stayed longer for food and drinks but wasn't going to leave dogs in the car . Which was a shame I an sure a dog cafe somewhere could be placed as tourists do have dogs and the dogs where better behaved on the train then the children on that day
K. H.
Cracking day out for all the family on a short line but still with plenty to do including the engine shed with static trains to look around and on. The special event days for younger kids are not to be missed. The staff and volunteers can't do enough to help and are very encouraging of those with interest, especially those wanting to become future volunteers ;-)
A. L.
Fab day out in the sunshine with my son's well worth every penny
G. S.
Loved this place great to see old steam engines still in use. The family loved traveling on the train and looking around the museum and workshop. Great like play area for the kids.

Fantastic time for all the family - can't fault it for the price and what is included. My daughter had a wonderful time on the steam train and will definitely visit again - coffee is yummy too!
H.
Nice little railway, good value as admission includes museum and train ride. Just a little bit out of town.
a.
Fun little steam train ride, small museum, shop and workshop. Entry fee is reasonable. There is a small cafe and kids play area so you can stay all day with the kids and ride the train multiple times.
r. 2.
Great day out, we were there on a family fun day, free face painting and balloon modelling. The kids loved the model railway exhibition that was on and of corse the ride on the steam train!
M. G.
A very good collection of standard gauge industrial locomotives. A brief history is available for each item. The "ride" has interest in the crossing of the harbour swing bridge.
It would have been nice to have more details on the harbour rail network.
Overall something for enthusiasts and the more general visitor.
M. W.
Nice experience of a small steam railway. Journey on the rail is about 30 minutes. Free parking can be difficult at weekends. Friendly staff and good for children.
P. B.
Great Museum with helpful friendly Staff. with lovely food available. The only downside is that this museum is in the middle of an industrial park and is not very well signposted but is well worth the effort
A. M.
My son, nearly 8 loves trains and would happily spend his entire weekend here. The volunteers try very hard to provide lots of information and you are made to feel very welcome.
J. S.
Fantastic place with lots to doo the Christmas train is a must !
D. J.

R. S.
If you like Trains it's a place Not to be missed.

Having been a railway buff for more than 60 years I have seen a lot of railways and museums etc. The Ribble steam Rly is good value for money unlimited travel included in the price which is good for families with children friendly staff and a cafe and facilities as well as a good collection of locos in the museum.I would recommend it for a pleasant day out

G. D.
A great day out! My 2 year old granddaughter loved it. The people were so friendly and she had great fun
M. C.
Fascinating rail museum with friendly staff and option of an attractive social or business meeting room overlooking the exhibits.
Adjacent is the Furness Railway Trust who are restoring old steam locomotives and own the oldest still working standard gauge loco (Furness 20 built 1863) in the UK
S. G.
My kids love this. The steam train ride is just the right length to hold their attention and it's cheap enough for us to go again and again. No card payments though, they need to look at that.
P. r.
Great website. Keeps you up to date with every thing they are doing & what Is going on during co-vid. Look forward to visiting soon
L. T.

Good fun day out for the family, if anyone's interested in trains or engines or even how they work, then I'd recommend coming children under 3 go free and there's an on site cafe and unlimited train rides

Great ride on the Santa Steam train. So nice for everyone to be singing, laughing and enjoying themselves along with how excited all the children were. Magical!!

Great place and fun for kids .Train museum and playground for kids
R. S.
Went along on a "steam" day but the engine broke down and the on-board bar didn't open, hence the 3* rating..... but I guess they're all hard working volunteers so we'll try again when the season starts again!
C. G.
Great place to go to whether enthusiast or not. Staff are friendly and helpful. Check out the website for special events. We'll be going again.

Friendly railway with a 30 min trip through Preston Marina. Mostly steam hauled but can be diesel. Good museum at Depot
J. B.
Took the kids for the santa steam train, was a gift from granny, kids enjoyed it and got a visit from the big man himself and also a pressie.
M. S.
Splendid. Friendly, helpful volunteers and a stunning range of locomotives on display. A must visit for anyone with an interest in industrial railway heritage.
M. N.
Visited the Santa Train this year with little ones. They enjoyed themselves. In previous years have visited the Bury train which is more expensive but , in my view, a better option.
M. H.
