Reviews of Oystermouth Castle
N. P.
Beautiful grounds with washroom facilities. You can enjoy a picnic on the grass and play games on the field. Lots of benches and shaded areas. The castle and ruins are worth the visit and doesn't cost much. Great bit of history in the center of town. Gorgeous views from the towers.
E. N.
Beautiful location (The Mumbles) of these castle ruins. Dog friendly...our furbaby was able to explore the castle walls, towers, Chapel and grounds. Due to parking time limits we were only able to spend 1hr walking the grounds. There is an M&S at the foot of the hill near the entrance to the grounds. Plenty of space to pick up a picnic and just enjoy the beauty.
D. W.
Such a lovely atmospheric castle with stunning views across the Mumbles bay. Welcomed by the most wonderful and friendly guide. There is a film show at the beginning telling you all the history of this beautiful castle. Well worth a visit.
K. B.
Beautiful place! When you come in and buy the tickets there is a video played about the history of the castle which is fascinating and most of the areas in the castle are open to the public to view.
Don’t make the same mistake as me and wear heels as some of the areas will be hard to get to if you do.
Honestly I would really recommend this place as it is truly worth the trip.
T. p.
Excellent castle that grows on you. This castle is more than meets the eye a maze or narrow walk ways and curious rooms let's you explore an 800 year old moment and imagine the life's of Norman lords in days long gone by. Parking is not provided so I would recommend the m and s car park or the one at the bottom of town. A one hour guided tour of the castle is provided for just an extra £1:50 and will help you spin out a visit. There is also a nice little shop and a short ten min video introducing the castle.

How can I review a historical place like this? The weather was too bad when I went there but still it's a must visit place in Swansea. It was closed so we weren't able to enter into the castle building. It's a beautiful place.
L. H.
We visited when the castle was closed but the grounds are lovely for dog walking and for sights of the castle exterior. During the week is least busy. Location is near town centre and found down a residential street.
D. K.
Really peaceful surroundings, we didn't go in but walked around the ramparts. Great loos and views
S. F.
It's a castle in mumbles village, what more can you say? It's great in summer the hold events like open air cinemas etc. Not always open to the public so check if you want to go inside.
M. K. A. W.
We explored the castle thoroughly. My kids had fun here.
S. C.
Locked in by the suburban terraced houses of Mumbles, set in a well manicured park.
Accessible from the Mumbles side on Castle Avenue, or from the Norton side via a footpath through community allotments.
Fine elevated views of the seafront from the park.
H. &. S. P.
Amazing views; great castle to explore.
C. C.
Great views across the bay and the mumbles. Lots of fun hiking around, up and down all the passages.
m. e.
Very interesting and lovely views. We were shown round by an excellent guide who explained the history of the castle and its inhabitants. Very knowledgeable and engaging and definitely worth taking up the offer of a guided tour.
A. P.
Much bigger than it looks from the outside and worth a visit.
M.
Didn't look around the castle but sat in the castle grounds watching a Shakespeare play. I wonderful setting for it.
R. G.
Beautiful castle steeped in history. It has breathtaking views of the sea and the city at the same time. Plenty of parking space, gift shop, and toilets there too
M.
Interesting to visit historical place and friendly guide
O. B.
Not visited for years, came with the kids and it’s great, amazing views too!!
『.
It's a beautiful, picturesque place, if you enjoy history, this is definitely a destination for you.
j.
Lovely ruined castle. Helpful staff. Fantastic views. There are quite a lot of steps to negotiate which is a consideration for those with mobility problems.
I found the guide book very confusing I was left with many unanswered questions, but there is always Google
S. S.
There is so much more to this castle than appears from the outside. We enjoyed the informative history film, the beautiful glass viewing platform, and the very friendly volunteer host
B. S.
Beautiful views to Swansea Bay, nice and cozy castle with interesting history.
O. D.
Worth the climb just for the view. The glass floor freaked me out a bit though.
G. T.
Closed because of Covid 19 but you can walk around the outside of this medium sized castle and look in where you can, all for free. I don't know if any of it is habitable but it looks quite well preserved. Though I didn't see any intact sections of roof.
A. S.
Well looked after and restored castle..however admission price for size of it rather steep. However several times a year I gather there are events going on which may soften the blow of admission charge.
C. W.
When visiting the Mumbles you have to have a walk around the castle. Great views of the area. Impressive structure on top of the hill.
S. G.
One of more complete ruins of castles we have visited in the UK. It must have been magnificent in its day. The views of Swansea from the castle are spectacular.
A. W.
A lovely place to visit- one of my favourite castles I've been to in Wales. The staff was extremely helpful and kind, they told us where yo go first to get as much as possible from the visit. Nice souvenirs available. Would love to go there again!
D. H.
Great place, interesting history, friendly staff. Bit of a hike up the hill but well worth it.
T. D.
One of the most accessible, interesting castles I've been to. Walk all around and inside: tunnels, ancient chapels with glass refitted walkways, and pretty well preserved. Absolutely brilliant value in our opinion!
S. -. C. J.
I've lived in Swansea for over a decade but I'd never been to Oystermouth Castle until now. It was really interesting and the volunteers who work there are super friendly and full of information. It's quite a small castle but is wonderfully preserved by Swansea Council. Downside is all the steps which is probably fine for a fit and healthy person but might be a bit much if you're disabled like I am, don't have good balance or have any condition that easily tires you out. Very young children might also struggle. It was only £3.50 for an adult to get in and the castle gardens are free for all to use so would be nice for a picnic.
S.
Lovely little castle in The Mumbles on the top of the hill. Have a look round, read the signs then go into the stop and entrance to the right and watch the video. Learn about William the Nord who built the castle, the family who held the castle for most of the 13th and 14th century and the ruins that fell upon the castle. Nice views on top of the castle and a nice spot for a sunny day. Enjoy..... !
J. P. P.
Well worth a visit, £11 for a family and worth every penny.
So much to see and do, a good morning's or afternoon's activity.
Nice little gift shop and t.v. history room.
You do need to be steady on your feet as there are quite a few stairs to negotiate.
This is a cash only place, so bring plenty of it.
I would recommend this place to my friends and family and anyone else who is interested in history.
Great place for kid's to explore.
A. T.
Went on an unplanned visit. Plenty to see. Lots of steps-not for the faint hearted. Loved it.
W. p. L. i. i.
48. Forty Eight years I have lived in Swansea, and 6 days ago it was really sunny so we went to mumbles castle.
I honestly can't get over the sheer scale of the castle hiding in the small town of mumbles. Mumbles has always been amazing but now it's spectacular. Massive grounds for picnics, amazing views and a real feel of the castle. You can really have a glimpse back in time. I highly recommend it but parking is a nightmare. £3.50 adult I'm not sure on kids. Volunteers help run the castle called "friends of the castle" and a lovely young lady who works for swansea tourism is really helpful and pleasant.
R. D.
A fun little castle with lots of passageways, staircases and dungeons to explore. The glass bridge is particularly cool! It's mostly open-air so go on a sunny day. You can go to the top of the wall for a panoramic view of Mumbles.
P. M.
Wonderful place to visit. Stumbled upon this place by chance and was pleasantly surprised. Great views all around and a decent amount of history behind the castle. All for £3.50
J. B.
It didn't look that big from outside, but once your in there so many rooms to explore. The glass bridge is something to walk over. You can't do it in 5 minutes, you need to take your time. It's run by volunteers and the 2 on duty today were very knowledgeable and so passionate about their castle. If your in Mumbles you've got to go
S. P.
A lovely castle unfortunately it is currently not open due to Covid-19, but there is a wonderful view of the sea and the surroundings.
J. B.
Nice place and veiw, we will be back once the castle is open!
T. B.
Nice spot to spend 30 mins in. £4 entrance fee. Good fun walking on the ramparts. Dogs welcome. Gift shop so your little ones can leave having spent some of your hard earned cash :)
I. M.
Very cheap to enter, £4 for adults and good to wander round. There's a short video and the chapel is beautiful.
J. M. G.
A norman castle, National Trust run, a great visit for families with children too as it is also a nice green park which surrounds it. There is also a walk into the woods after visiting the Castle. Great views overseeing the Mumbles.
B. N.
A fine example of a preserved castle, good views of the town and coast. Well worth a visit. The grounds are very pleasant too.
B. R.
CASH ONLY no card machines inside the castle. Although I didn't gain access as the castle was closed I did walk around the ruins and enjoyed some fish and chips on one of the benches close to the castle.
L. J.
Interesting visit, lovely ro see it back open. oldest loved it but not ideal for young kids as the steps are steep
A. D.
Beautiful old castle in well kept grounds with the best views .
C. B.
Beautiful castle and surrounding grounds. Views are worth the visit alone, nominal entry price should not deter at all. I would go again.
t. i.
Me and my girlfriend went there on a very wet day. We showed up soaking wet and the two ladies that were working there where very kind and helpfull. Lovely little castle to explore. I would recommend a visit.
D. L.
Was closed when I arrived, but still some great views and a peaceful place for a stroll.
J. T.
Much bigger and interesting than I thought it would be. Enjoyed exploring the various passages and chambers. Great views of the town.
W. R.
Solo break... cherry blOssOm time!
M. M.
Loads of history, lots of passageways and rooms to explore, and has the added bonus of historical reenactments and displays created by enthusiastic volunteers.
C. O.
Love this little gem. Set on the hill, surrounded by houses & the bustle of everyday life. Yes, it's not on the scale of Caerphilly, but has history & charm. The castle closes for the winter months, but the grounds remain open & it's worth walking up to the entrance, to see the view of Mumbles. The grounds are peaceful, there is seating & toilets remain open.
A. H.
Unfortunately couldn't go inside the castle due to Corvid 19 but still an interesting walk around.
C. D.
Fantastic castle with amazing views. Also very dog friendly.
S. H.
Small castle, partly damaged, entry is ticketed (4 Pounds), surrounded by a nice garden. Good for a quick stopover when in Swansea
M. W.
Had a great time at the castle, would recommend it for any visitors in the Swansea area
P. G.
Recommend. So much more to this castle than you'd think. Even without children you need an hour v
M. H.
Spent an amazing hour or so here with the kids, learning some local history and marvelling at the castle. Really interesting to walk through so much history.
S. K.
Good castle. Small but also cheap access
S. K.
Amazing!
W. D.
Shame it was closed when we went their but still worth the visit with a lovely park around and some small woods to explore.
C. J.
Great castle , you can go inside and ther's something for the kids , amazing views over Swansea Bay and nice fields with plenty of benches for a sit down
A. R.
Nice castle.
R. e.
Terrific views over Mumbles Bay from the castle.
B.
Lovely place. Views are truly spectacular and breathtaking. We had a great time with family and friends.
A. W.
Had wedding photos hereon a lovely sunny day, the happy coupe had a tiring of the knot ceremony which took place years ago, really interesting ceremony, fab place to go to learn about the white lady & other historical facts. Well worth a visit.

L. K.
A small neat castle easily accessible from the town
S. B.
Fabulous Norman castle with lovely open grounds fields and woods to explore. Popular with children and dog walkers.
B. D.
Friendly and knowledgeable tour guides, very good value for money. Would argue it's better than Cardiff castle! Need to book in advance but it's easy to do online
N. P.
Nice castle, well restored and friendly staff.
D. G.
Nice castle well preserved very interesting place
B. C. ?.
Nice place but wear mask for not get covid like us.....

From the castle grounds
J. H.
Amazing castle with a beautiful view
J. I.
Beautiful views, kids had loads of fun exploring. Staff were lovely.
O. L.
Nice historical sight with green pathway for a little walk.
R. H. B.
Absolutely beautiful, unfortunately when i went it was closed for the winter so i could only walk around the outside. Would definitely go again
S. R.
Nice castle ruins to explore and good views.
A. J.
Didn't have time to go in but appears to be very nice.
If you're lucky you might get parked in the nearby Street where you can park up for an hour for free.
The castle is one of the smaller ones, but with stairwells and balconies that make it fun for the children.
Great views from the top so worth a quick trip.
F. H.
Nice place to visit, beautiful view from castle's top.
L. K.
Beautiful and tranquil place, full of history... Perfect for anyone who love castles and historic buildings!
And the best of all, they have activities designed for children too. The entry price is affordable and you can spend as much time there as you can! They also offer a short tour of the castle included in the price! Absolutely loved it!!! :)
C. S.
Very interesting castle especially if you have a guided tour with a helpful and information volunteer guide as I did. Beautiful views, reasonable entrance fees, lots of windy spiral stairs to discover and climb and much much more. Also the local area of Mumbles is delightful to explore with the pier, lovely shops in Newton Road, a good selection of cafes, bars, restaurants etc.
V. H.
Nice ruin. Exploring it is pretty fun.
V. B.
We loved this castle! It’s just the right combination of restored and ruined, really cool to look around, lots to explore, and lots of interesting information. The staff there were lovely and friendly too :) and we were really impressed that adult tickets were only £3.50. Unlike a lot of tourist attractions, the bottles of water and souvenirs in the shop were very reasonably priced. We would definitely go back for another peek of in the area. We are very sad that our trip just missed the mediaeval banquet!
R. T.
£6 one adult one child, discounts on larger family ticket. Nicely sympathetic work has been done to make the buildings safe and accessible with viewing platforms added in upper levels. Some disabled access. Toilets just outside buildings you can reenter if you keep your ticket. Nice little shop selling fairly good quality souvenirs and weaponry gorgeous the kids. Unfortunately I could find no tea. :(. Bring a picnic and the young ones will be happy running round for a good couple of hours.
M. B.
Lovely old British castle in the heart of the famous Mumbles (where Catherine Zeta-Jones was born). Lovely grounds too perfect for a picnic or just enjoying when the sun's out! The inner part does get locked at night, so check out the opening times if you want to go inside the Keep. Famous landmark.
C. D.
Love the serenity around the castle.
A. M.
This is a lovely place to visit and a bargain at £4 entry (£3 for students!). As you'd expect for the admission price, it's not somewhere you could spend the whole day but it's definitely worth a visit if you have a couple of hours to spare.
Some of the areas aren't the easiest to access, with steep uneven stairs and narrow passageways.
Lovely views from around the top.
Toilets are awful, or they were when we visited, so be aware of this if you're planning to stay for any length of time.
k. R.
Stunning place despite clouds and cheap entry
V. H.
Majestic ruined castle right in the centre of The Mumbles with vaulted chambers, narrow internal passages and great views of the town and coast from the battlements. I paid £3.50 adult admission, the guide book costs £1 and has a good plan of the castle, and there's also an introductory film outlining the history. The most spectacular part is Alina's Chapel reached by a steep spiral staircase, but once at the top there's a modern viewing platform and it is well worth the climb. The ladies in the gift shop were very helpful and friendly. Lots of pleasant green space around the castle.
A. J.
Small but steeped in history. The castle has had a uplift with the grounds and the people of the community really support all events.
Stunning views over the bays and a well worthy inclusion of Welsh castles.
s.
Thank you to the kind ladies in gift shop that kept an eye on our buggy whilst we looked around castle
T. H.
Very interesting and wonderful views
B. J.
Although it is not complete it is still worth a visit . You can explore the ruins and imagine life in the castle or roam around the grounds and wooded areas. There are benches to sit and relax on and lawned areas for the kids run about on. During the summer months there are plays, concerts, film shows and other events organised in the open air . Some during the day and some during the evenings.
G. W.
Visited the castle two times. Single adult ticket, 3.50 pounds. Good parking around. Commanding views or Swansea bay. Very interesting. Good for families. But, due climbing up, within the castle, not for the very little one. Very recommended.
M. M.
Friendly helpful staff, a good day out
R. N.
A totally epic castle closed at the moment but still a good walk and day out. Stunning size and amazed it still stands. Another true outstanding beauty of Wales
J. A. H.
Closed to the public at the moment. Organised tours only but looks like a good place from outside. Check first. Council run.
t. J.
Beautiful views of the sea and the mumbles area
Would go on a day out with the family
Y. G.
Fabulous view from the chapel which can be accessed from the inside of the ticket box building.
D. H.
Sweet little castle with lots of information to read about and places to explore
C. L.
As castles go, this one is great! Reasonably priced and lots to see.
S. B.
Amazing Castle with wonderful views
S. H.
Looks very interesting but closed when we visited
T. F.
Great history on these ruins told by our guide. If you like history and some tales it's the place to visit.
A. I.
I didn't go in the castle, but the views from it are amazing.
K. T.
Absolutely brilliant, well worth the climb for spectacular views. There's something for everyone of all ages. One of my favourite coastal castles, a must see!
Z.
The castle doesn't make much sense. Some rooms and spaces aren't explained and it's hard to say what they are it's cheap and a nice thing to do for a few hours. It's not an all day thing but it's a nice experience
R. J.
Great place to visit. Reasonable entrance fee and they accept PTL cards. Really friendly volunteer staff. Kids loved exploring. If you bring a picnic it can be a really pleasant afternoon.
g. s.
Great interesting castle
D. D.
Came upon the Castle by complete accident after a delicious Welsh breakfast at "Trams"
Never been here before so it was a surprise. Closed unfortunately for the Winter now but there are still some lovely scenery to be enjoyed and walks around it
Met some VERY knowledgable locals who filled us in with local points of interest and anecdotes.
Will definitely come back in the Spring
Well worth a visit
T. T.
fantastic full of history well worth a visit
A. W.
Visited over the easter break and had a brilliant time. Entrance fee was reasonable and the walks and views from the castle are amazing. worth every penny.
h.
Lovely place. Spectacular and Breathtaking views over the wonder full city of Swansea, the staff were lovely and it was reasonably cheap. Great land surrounding it. Highly recommend it, it was a lovely day out
A. H.
Didn't end up going in as we looked round before the opening time! Lovely castle, well maintained and presented. Gives lovely views over mumbles and mumble head.
P. J.
Lovely quiet park, great views across the bay and mumbles
A. P.
Very much a ruin rather than a grand furnished castle, however still investing nonetheless. Just a shame that it costs so much to visit, surely the council could afford the upkeep and encourage more people down to mumbles to visit!
M. T.
Excellent Castle to visit.
H. C.
Still closed for winter (March 11th) but it’s a lovely yet imposing castle that can be admired from the green outer areas. Take a moment to just gaze at how awesome it is and that it will remain so for many centuries to come
G. L.
Ruin. Atmospheric. Can get up close. Views over Swansea bay. Nice grounds for picnic. Right next to Mumbles town. Events held in summer (plays, soirees,etc.).
D. S.
Closed for referb, check the website before you visit. I didn't!
o. r.
Friendly staff. Did not see the dragon
O. A.
It's a nice place to be.
D. D.
Very well preserved and interesting castle with spooky antechambers and beautiful views, spectacular from the battlements. Sweet little on-site giftshop run by a lovely couple.
P. K.
Lovely place, though was closed for a visit. Outstanding views of lighthouse from here
H. G.
Well worth £3.50 entry, brilliant castle deserves exploring. Really well reclaimed. Great views from the battlements make for good pics.
M. N.
Was lovely place we visited make sure park bit far otherwise difficult for parking.
M. O.
A really pleasant place to spend an afternoon.
Wonderful areas for capturing great photos of the family or romantic images of loved ones.
J. S.
Lovely well looked after
L. L.
Staying in Mumbles for a couple of nights, we were surprised to see this castle on our walk around town. Worth the entry fee for the beautiful views.
D. H.
alun phillips
V. S.
Oystermouth Castle is beautiful but because of isolation it was closed.
Well worth a visit and in the centre a shopping area also a must.
G. B.
We have been visiting this castle for over 30 years and it had never been open know that has changed and the castle has been opened to the public. This has all changed and it is brilliant, well done to all concerned.
M. R.
Worth a visit but a ruin and we couldn't go inside
A. B.
Great we'll preserved castle, looking out over Swansea bay. Perfect for a visit or even a picnic on the grass.
T. S.
Very peacefull. Especially early morning walk up through the woods to the castle green. Sit on the Dylan Thomas 2014 bench and contemplate the world.
L. F.
Beautiful views-only downside was we didn't want to pay to get inside a very small castle.
I. W.
Been here 2 times and fantastic 3 hours not a day out but we'll worth a visit and to watch the play in the grounds realy nice town to visit a must
M. M.
Lovely castle - unfortunately shut when we were there as out of season but had a nice short walk around the grounds
N. W.
Castle is great to visit and interesting history.
No parking onsite of the castle closet is in the centre of mumbles and costs a lot to pay.
M. S.
Great little castle, you can walk the curtain wall and view the coastline from the second floor chapel. Not expensive either.
K. C.
Had a very enjoyable few hours here with our Grandson. We were informed what to see and how to access the area as we purchased the tickets. Thank you
B. W.
Open Air Shakespeare, with bring your own wine: cannot fault it! Quantum Theatre Group performing Midsummer Night's Dream was superb in the grounds of our Norman Castle.
K. C.
Lovely castle,
J. G.
Great for kids nice place, BRING CASH, no card facilities and the nearest cashpoint means a nice 1/4 mile hill jogging session
W. a.
Nice peaceful and overlooked castle of the Swansea area
M. W.
Was in the castle grounds for Mumblesfest, great day out for the whole family.
P. S.
Very interesting tour & the guides were hugely knowledgeable.
S. T. W.
Part of the St Thomas Way story (read more on the website). Just a few miles west around Swansea Bay, in the picturesque seaside village of Mumbles, Oystermouth is the castle William Cragh - 'The Hanged Man' in the St Thomas Way story - attacked, leading to his hanging.
The castle is open May-September (charges apply), with a visitor centre and events programme.
M. B.
Glorious site with a great view over the harbour.
M. F.
Lovely relaxing garden, small cafe serving snacks cakes ice cream and hot drinks. Great experience
T. C.
Was very interesting, if going to mumbles have a look.
D. D.
I thought it was excellent. Only problem is getting there. Not much parking and buses were over capacity and went past without stopping.
A. B.
Not big but a super castle, and the gentleman in charge was very informative. Also a lovely little shop.
D. B.
Used to love sitting outside the castle and enjoy the views over the sea. Very restful.
S. C.
It was closed for the winter when I went but the park and views are worth it
C. L.
Very nice area, explore the nearby woods as well. Don't like that I have to pay for the castle...
N. F.
If you're in Mumbles, South Wales then pop into Oystermouth Castle. Admission is currently £3.50 for an adult or £2.50 for concessions. No cafe but small shop for gifts.
C. K.
Lovely castle, shame we couldn't go in. Still worth a visit though.
W. 6.
Very good basecone explore could do this more details in each of the room or given that but it's very Maze like Castle
S. P.
Great for kids to explore all the nooks and cranies and tunnels of the castle. Plenty of history for adults as well.
T. H. A. D.
It was closed due to covid when I visited. But it’s a big castle with ample parking
C. G.
Although this is a ruin the views are spectacular. We walked up from the beach and back through fields to the footpath and main road.
T. J.
Lovely walk, great views
E. T. B.
Fantastic Castle, kids loved it and we could even take the dogs in. Lovely afternoon out in a beautiful seaside town.
E. G.
A pleasant little spot. Not a whole lot there, but nice to walk out to if you're up for a leisurely wander up from the Mumbles promenade.
J. f.
Great cheap day out for the kids. Took about an hour and a half to walk round the whole castle kids loved it
M. P.
Well, you've got to look at it's history for intrest. It was build as a defence post to make sure the Welsh native people back in the 1200s would stay in Gower (built by the Normans). It was claimed later by the Welsh then reclaimed by the English. From there onward, it stayed as a in English hands under Henry the third. Thus being given to the lords of Gower when the Welsh had No longer had strength in this part of Wales in the 1300s.
T. W.
Only passed it on the bus looked good
M. C.
This is a beautiful castle in a wonderful village, views out to sea, definitely worth visiting
J. K.
Lovely outside but it wasn't open to go in to walk around and explore got some very nice pictures while walking around the outside
D. H.
What an amazing magical place. Just sitting there with my wife and a bag of chips to share. Taking in the wonderful atmosphere.

Really cute castle with a great view of mumbles and its coastline from above
S. W.
Very interesting little castle, right in the heart of Mumbles. Fantastic views all round.
S. C. T.
Haven't been into the castle but the garden surrounding is nice to take a walk
M. R.
Very compact castle with great access up on to the walls, plus great views on Mumbles
S. L.
Give yourself the better part of the day to explore on ya if your over six foot four have some real fun getting through some of the doors
C. N.
Really good to cycle to and almost omniscient views
