Reviews of Conwy Valley Railway Museum
E. B.
Visited in August 2019 on my Wales holiday. I spent a day in Betws-y-Coed and walked around to see as much as I can. The model shop or museum is next to the railway station, the entry ticket is a lovely old style paper ticket to let us behind the shop. It is very small, but definitely interesting and full with old models, built up whole villages and many of them is interactive with different buttons to push. Not just models but everything related to old fashioned railways and travels are pretty much can be found here, so it is a nostalgia journey. That time only me and a male visitor were in the room, but we both enjoyed to play around. There are toilets on site, and in the shop we can buy gifts. Cafe is in the station, parking is on the street, or one of the main car parks in the village.
B. B.
An interesting place to visit more suited to people who are into model railways and children.
You can go on a mini train which is a separate cost to going round the museum. The cost todo both is only about 5 pounds so not a great amount.
D. R. R.
Decent place to stop and kill some time especially if you have young children. Definitely one for a young train 🚂 enthusiast. There is a small train cart that they can self operate down the track for a quid 💷. The £2 ride on the mini train is worth it. The ride lasted around 6/8 minutes following the full length of the track.
R. H.
Really good dioramas made by one man showing different aspects of the railways. A lot of artifacts from all the railways, showing interesting information if you read the exhibits. A very fine model of 70000, possibly the best I have seen to date, I hope it is steamed again. A very nice little museum.
P. E.
I last came here over 30 years ago and this place brings back fond memories.
A mini railway for the kids to ride on and a museum with some great models in.
Set with a traditional working railway station, this little gem is worth visiting if you want a trip down memory lane.
Z. T.
Took my train obsessed son to have a nosy around and ride the miniature railway.
The museum and ride are accessed via a footbridge through the train station or via a side gate.
The train ride is £2.50 man woman or child, so can't accuse them of any discrimination. It's fun enough though I've seen more attention paid to putting little villages in etc at similar attractions. It's a decent length and is fun for small people.
The museum and shop are showing their age and sorely in need of a little tlc. I went years ago and not much had changed.
The staff don't exactly sell the place, mostly coming across indifferent at best. A big gripe is between the museum cafe and railway station, there's no toilets. When my 3yo announced he desperately needed the loo, we were directed back across the bridge, through the station, and to some toilets in the car park that charge for the privilege. This has always been the problem with touristy North Wales, the visitor is rinsed of his cash left right and centre. I won't hurry back
M. H.
Nice little museum. Sadly not all of the model railway exhibits were working when we visited. There's a lovely miniature steam train ride around the grounds outside for a few pounds each. Could do with some updating and repairs but worth a trip if you are in the area.
G. P.
Its worth a visit at the price. Some of the layouts not working properly but some cracking memorabilia and railway items
M. H.
We visited here for a couple of hours, the kids really enjoyed it. A family ticket was good value at £6.00 unfortunately I can't personally give it 5* as several of the exhibits were broken/defective
I. C.
This is one of my favourite places, as well as the brilliant railway models and museum displays it has a great shop full of railway trains and accessories. It also stocks Wilesco and Mamod steam engines. I have only visited three times and I couldn’t resisting buying a working steam model on each visit. The staff are really friendly and helpful. I would recommend a visit if you are in Betws y Coed.
F.
The beat model railway museum in the country, the man spend 35 years build it! The display is stunning and detailed. The minimature ride is beautiful!
T. D.
Just passed by this tinny railway station or museum. It nice to visit this place.
N. M.
Such a wonderful miniature railway.
You buy tickets in the shop, proper heritage style tickets and wait for the next train ride. You board on a little station platform and the driver takes your tickets. The route winds around a large parcel of land taking in the mainline station, behind the buffet coach café, through trees and over a pond. I felt it was good value for the lovely journey.
L. J.
Lovely place to visit. Museum is cheap and has a lot of history behind it and also the model railway was brilliant. Took my little lad on it and we both thoroughly enjoyed it
Can't wait till we go again
N. K.
Amazing Museum! Loved the beautiful scenery and the amazing miniature train ride! Had a great day :)
M. S.
It was ok, something to do on a rainy day. Kids would probably like it better.
M. P.
The price for it is not as much as£2.5 per person, the way where the small train is going is long could be very good and Worth this price, however could be more attractive, The views from the mini train are not that enchanting, shame as would be wonderfull place and more people could be there.
S. K.
A larger than expected Railway museum. Plenty of layouts and some are interactive. Outside the mini train takes you on a 8 min ride. Cafe in a carriage and toilets. A shop stocked with model railway items. Right next to main railway station.
M. D.
Lovely little railway museum, very reasonable prices and we loved all the model railway layouts!
A. E.
Not much to the museum (would have given 5 stars otherwise) but little one loved the miniture train ride. Not a wasted journey though as location is lovely
V. Y.
Went in the steam carriage cafe for a latte as only place to park up .and was joined by a Robin who devided to hang round us for about 5 minutes .
S. A.
Interesting exhibits and I enjoyed my visit but not all displays were working properly. I may drop by on my next visit. Diolch.
W. B.
An enjoyable outing with our young grandchildren to this museum, which has a narrow gauge rail ride available, cleverly landscaped across the site. Interesting memorabilia inside the museum and refreshments in an old railway coach. You can cross the bridge to the main line station where there is access to more shops and food outlets.
S. S.
Great place to bring the kids, we enjoyed our train ride.
D. S.
Great place to visit with kids, train ride very cheap for the time on it.
Y. O.
Grand little railway museum including a shop and cafe there is some difficulty with access, either a long way round or crossing a rail foot bridge but well worth a look, great miniature railway ideal for the little ones,8 or 9 minute ride
J. L.
Love it here. Waiting for 27 years to have a go on Douglas the little steam train that could! Great day out
J. G.
This museum is amazing, a must visit if in the area. The time and dedication put into it by the owners is clear and the staff are friendly and approachable. Located across the pedestrian bridge at Betws-y-coed station, make sure you head there after seeing the waterfall and taking in the town.
l. p.
Lovely place to visit, little train ride wonderful railway museum, beautiful station
r. g.
Actually a wonderous place, the museum is great but needs some TLC, brilliant day out or weekend location
R. C.
Whilst its a nice friendly site it's very small. We drove from Liverpool expecting more. The train ride is good. It lasts about 9, minutes but from what we seen on the website we thought we could ride more than the one mknature train you could only keep the kids entertained for about an hour here
K. M.
This place was great!! My train loving son thought it was amazing!! Loads of buttons to press to see huge model train scenes come alive, we were in here for 30 mins but was only £6 for a family of 4 so great as a little quick activity
H. J.
We love this place. We only live 30 minutes away but come and stay at the caravan park because it's lovely and our grandson is train mad.
P. S.
Museum feels a bit tired and abandoned which is a shame as some great exhibits
A. (.
Great little attraction for the family or just enthusiasts. Nice little museum/shop & the train ride is good fun for £2.50. Needs financial support so pop in and have a coffee!
J. M.
Small but good.
P. B.
We went to a 8 min train ride and the cafe is amazing but slow
B. C.
Good place to visit with kids. They enjoyed the small train ride. Very good and I don't think you get a seat with both side windows accessible only by you without sharing with anyone 😉. Only door you are sharing with another person 😁😁. Fun enjoyed a lot, Small hesitant whether I fit in the seat but it's comfortable even little big one's too and mind the gap when you enter into the train. It's going to be a big Yoga to get into the seat. Once settled it's all good.
n. m.
Nice place we had a train ride only £2.50 each
k. A.
Like being a child again 3 of us all over 50 enjoyed this miniature train ride. Lasts about 15 mins and I think it was £2.50 worth every penny, Marvellous!
E. W.
Another fantastic visit and most enjoyable day and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in railways, pity the main line is still out of comission
D. D.
Ideal for families with young children. My 2 and 6 year old loved the carriage cafe and couple of train rides. Museum family ticket for £6 isn't badly priced either. Plenty of things to look at and interact with. Couple of shops on the other side of the railway worth a nose in too.
W. W.
Children enjoyed a train ride and an ice cream .
C. G.
I can’t vouch for the museum as we didn’t look around, but the mini steam train ride was brilliant, and the kids loved it. £2 each was a good price too. We were on what was supposed to be the last train of the day, but they kindly ran an extra one for the families who arrived after us.
J. C.
We have been going on this little train from when my children were little..now the grandchildren...lovely ride and experience for the children 😄
D. R.
Great site next to Transport for Wales railway station. Well stocked model shop and interesting museum. Decent length ride round attractive grounds on miniature railway with views of impressive surrounding mountain scenery.
S. H.
Very good in quantity but not quality.
No moving trains and a lot of dust, however as it is early in the season perhaps better to come.
T. L.
The outside train ride is very much worth the money very good ride. However the indoor railway museum and displays are definitely not worth the visit as half the items didn't work, looks very old and tired needs A LOT of attention, also the staff seem not to be happy to help and seem a bit don't careish attitude. The displays in the old railway cartridges are not to bad and are free to see, but I would not go back to the inside display and museum part on the site.
M.
The kids loved it! We got a multiple ride pass so our little boy could go on 4 times. Best hot chocolate - extremely good cafe prices. Cafe in a gorgeous old train carriage.
W. A.
Only really went to see the 15" Britannia. I don't think the museum has changed since the last time I visited 13 years ago. Train ride is a nice 10 minute ride that uses the space a track layout to good use. Then over the footbridge to the mainline station and a variety of little shops. Don't pass if you want something to do for an hour.
b. m.
Lovely little place, friendly staff.
D. B. -. N.
I very much enjoyed it here.
There is a tiny train for adults and children.
And a really small one for just little kiddy's.
Made me want to be 2 years old again.
Great old fashioned Railway a great attraction.
G. C.
While definitely a huge draw for the kids, it could do with a bit of a refresh. Not a modernisation as such, just a tidy up, clear up weeds and bushes, lick of paint.
Lovely people running it, and well worth visiting. I just worry that it won't be there in 5 years without since maintenance.
S. W.
Small place but has very good mini steam train rides only £2 each! Great little shop with airfix models (proper ones!) and lots of train sets and additional bits. Lovely staff and very well looked after area... Well worth a visit if you're in betws y coed!
K. F.
Takes me back in time, to when I was a young lad growing up! I had my own train set at home, and it felt like being in a different world! The excitement and thrill of setting up these train sets, can be enjoyed at this destination in Betws-y-Coed, and the displays already set inside take men and boys back to the time of steam trains. A great meal can be obtained in the static carriages close by, and prices and menu are extremely reasonable for an assortment of main and side dishes (including desserts)! There are displays of railway paraphernalia also in some of the static carriages well worth perusing as well.
M. H.
Set in picturesque surroundings and literally just off the actual mainline station. The miniature train rides are not to be missed. Very cheap for an eight minute train ride.....the kids will absolutely love it (and us adults too) you must visit here especially on a sunny day. Made the whole trip worthwhile from where we were staying in Towyn on our trip in Wales.
N. B.
Great fun for all children. Great little railway, Its just a shame that the tram line has no funding to be fixed. Wonderful model layout inside the museum. Reasonable priced.
s. s.
Wonderful place. Wonderful people 🙂
S. M.
Kids really enjoyed the place, rail models are very informative and gives a opportunity to understand the evolution of railways
P. C.
The models and dioramas are excellent, however most of the moving exhibition did not appear to work and could have done with a dose of housekeeping to reset topped buildings etc. The brittania is well worth a visit, would love to see this in steam
w. j.
Lovely little village area nice train rides for the kids too and had a nice drink in the train cafe
S. R.
Ride on mini-railway was great, well worth £2. Inside museum was OK for £1.50. Exhibitions were a bit tired, (bulbs out, model layouts not working properly), but what do you get for £1.50 these days?
A. S. t. L.
What a great little place for young children. We had an excellent time here with our 20 month old son and really enjoyed the railway carriage cafe there too. Much less crowded and better priced that anywhere else in the village.
L. S.
I loved the trains and so did my children Located in the beautiful village of Betws-y-Coed adjacent to the main station, the Conwy Valley Railway Museum is a must for all that enjoy railways. Our miniature railway takes you on a 8 minute trip around the beautifully landscaped grounds. If you are lucky you may see wild rabbits grazing by the pond!
They let dog on the trains and I the museum it brilliant and it is the only place that has a bridge over 3 different gauges of train track.
V. H.
Just across a footbridge from the mainline station, the shop is crammed with models and books for the railway enthusiast. The lady behind the counter charged me £1 to visit the small museum containing some spectacular dioramas, memorabilia, signalling equipment and lots of models. Plenty of push-button fun for kids and adults alike! There are toilets at the back of the museum, and a café in a railway carriage.
D. P.
Not overly brilliant but entry is cheap and it is worthwhile to pop in and see the 1/4 scale 'Britannia' live steam loco. There are quite a few electric model trains that are button operated and are a bit of fun with some of the layouts being quite large. There is a ride on garden railway that runs a fair way round the grounds. It is most often hauled by a diesel although a steam train does the trips sometimes; probably on weekends at the height of summer.
M. J.
Fabulous little place. Its so obvious that this place has been made with pure love. The miniature railway doesn't look much from the platform but it has has so much thought and attention to detail. Well worth a visit and the slate goods are excellent too.
T. D.
Been coming since I was a child and today got to take my first born for the first time. A life time of cherished memories and look forward to making many more. Thank you.
K. L.
The little train runs almost every day and is a good 10 minute ride. Interesting museum and can strongly recommend the Buffet Coach café!
A. H.
Wonderful location in Betws y Coed. Children love the small trains that are available to ride and there are plenty of historical references and the local station has a wonderful cafe.
S. A.
The little steam train that goes around the grounds is good and fair value. The shop and model railway exhibition is old and tired. I can appreciate they are a lot of work to do up and maintain but I've seen an excellent one at the back of a toy shop in Bourton on the Water and that was excellent. This is dull (for a non train person) to enjoy.
R. S.
Great place to visit at a very reasonable price. Staff where all very friendly. Lovely 7.25 gauge railway track with a good ride round. It's a must visit if you're in the area
S. L.
Excellent museum, low entry fee and lots of exhibits to see. Also, great little steam train ride available, great value for money and a must for the kids (big and small) !
A. J. M.
Great little museum. Visited this June. Covid disrupted, slightly, but well worth the visit.
B. E.
Lovely little museum with a couple of interactive exhibits and an 8 minute train ride, good for little kids and a way to fill a morning or afternoon.
c. o.
Eclectic collection of railway memorabilia and model railways/dioramas. Reasonable entry fee of £1.50 (in 2018). Shop sells model railways, books and gifts. Narrow-gauge railway (outside) has £2.00 fee. Several railway carriages on section of track outside - cafe is in TSO carriage. Allow 1hr+ for visit.
D. J.
£2 well spent! Accessible from the network rail station via a footbridge, if you like model railways, this is definitely worth the trip.
B. S.
A very good, small and inexpensive museum with some interesting artefacts, particularly from the age of steam. There are also some well made working model railways. Well worth half an hour of anyone's time.
C. F.
Excellent 🚉 train layouts and historic signs and signaling. Great model shop too with plastic kits and gifts. Also visit the buffet car next door.
C. e.
Good couple of hours for young kids train ride is cheap and good value for money the museum behind the gift shop is a bit tired and dated but my kids loved pressing the buttons to operate the miniature trains in there (they are 5 and 3) so we where in there for about an hour and they had good time and it was only £1.50 to get in they enjoyed the bumper cars outside to aswell (50p) and the little Thomas train on the track they could operate themselves that was a £1 a go but worth it then it was over the bridge to explore the surrounding areas
d. e.
a great place to visit , has the full feel of railway tradition, a lovely museum with a shop full of interesting models, and to top it off a cafe in an old carriage staffed by very nice people.
j. o.
Nice small museum, not alot to do bit its attached to the betws y coed train station which has some nice shops and nice places to eat a few are pet friendly
A. B.
