Reviews of Fairfax House
C. S.
Brilliant house to visit. The tour guides were full of knowledge, they all knew everything there was to know about the place. The house is full of beautiful furniture & ornaments. Well worth visiting & if you are a member of Historic Houses you can get in for free.
M. M.
Although the house is very beautiful… I was left a bit disappointed. We took our time and took some photos but we left in less than an hour. 15 minutes to be precise. The house is very small and there’s not so much to do. The guides are very stressful looking at every mouvements you make. There was no explanations about the house and what you are seeing in front of you. I’m usually a big fan of this kind of museum but this one wasn’t it. Won’t recommend except if you really want to.
T. S.
Lovely little house in the heart of York, entry is very reasonable considering you get the chance to visit again with the year completely free! Room guides were extremely knowledgeable and super friendly!

Well worth a visit. Guides were very informative and helpful. The house is very well presented. Entered the masters bedroom and thought it was haunted, could hear snoring and looked at the bed to make sure it was empty dozy me ,it was a recording playing .
J. W.
Very interesting house with a history. Guide was very knowledgeable and clearly enthusiastic about the place. Some nice examples of the period furniture and wonderful ceilings. Interesting facts about how catholics had to live at that time. Fairfax family ties to the saving of the Minster from sacking by parliamentarian army.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this compact Georgian house. The current exhibition about Ann Fairfax gives a real context whilst the room guides and audio-visual presentations tell the story in an engaging and imaginative way. Well worth a visit.
D. V.
The house is beautiful, but the visit is very short sadly. We took our time but we saw everything is less than 20 minutes. Maybe they should add an audioguide.
S. E.
House is very neatly displayed. Guides are knowledgeable and can tell you interesting/ quirky stories about every room of the house (especially the hidden details you might overlook just going round yourself). Workmanship of the restoration is breathtaking.

What a stunning gem! Perhaps overlooked when York is so packed with history and landmarks, but this was my favourite of all the places visited. It’s a sumptuous and stunning example of a Georgian townhouse, with astonishing craftwork. Plus there are so many threads of history and culture throughout, like the furniture and it’s like to the Terry’s. The volunteer guides were knowledgable, kind, enthusiastic, and so generous with their time. I learned so much and spent several hours exploring and would gladly go back. The current exhibition on Ann Fairfax is fantastic and I can’t wait to come back and see what the next exhibition may be!

Farfax House a little treasure in the centre of York which a lot of people miss..Loved this beautiful Georgian House very close to the Museum and Watch Tower....beautifully furnished with most of its original belongings...don't miss this you won't be sorry!
E. P.
Amazing Georgian style house museum 👌. The volunteers working in there are super friendly and knowledge. It was an absolute joy to go there. Didn't see any toilet facilities.
A. E.
Absolutely brilliant supplement to my studies of the Georgian era. I particularly enjoyed chatting with volunteer Celia - she was enthusiastic and conversational with fantastic knowledge of the time and house.
A. C.
Interesting house. Centrally located. Let down by lack of toilets on site.
I. L.
Fascinating building, loved looking round all the rooms and reading about the family
C. Y.
A wonderful home with friendly guides!
c. b.
Well worth a visit to see how the family lived in this house, and dealt with their own pandemic and lockdown at the time. Majority of the items in the house are original. It's amazing, don't hesitate you'll be surprised at how much you enjoy it
C. S.
Very interesting, the staff is so knowledgeable, a must do when you're in York.
M. C.
I can remember when this was part of the St George's cinema!!
The ladies seem to know their subject and enjoy talking about it.
The shame was a couple didn't think they should wear masks. No consideration for the rest of us
A. G.
Fascinating Georgian townhouse in the heart of York. Lots of family and architectural history, plus additional attractions around Christmas. Good guided tour twice a day, and knowledgeable volunteers if you self-guide at other times. Nice shop too.
E. H.
Impressive well kept Georgian house with a beautiful and historic collection of furniture and gorgeous restored ceilings and surroundings. Above all absolutely amazing staff with an abundance of enthusiasm and intellect of the history of both the house and family as well as the collection of items in the house, York, and Georgian history.
C. C.
Volunteers in the room were lovey and willing to answer our questions as best as they could. We really enjoyed speaking to them. Would be helpful if a general overview of the history of the house was available near the entrance. Overall a lovely place to visit. We spent 30mins wandering around. (Photos are not allowed.)

This is the most interesting house I've visited. The story of the family, the story of the futniture, the story of the building and the visual impact of the room settings all add to a very enjoyable visit. The room guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. It's just £6 so good value. No cafe here but as its adjacent to all York has to offer, its not a problem.
J. S.
Fairfax house is a beautiful Georgian town house decorated with furniture of the period. For a short period of time they have dresses from the era on display along with jackets and shoes all on loan from a museum. It is well worth a visit if you like hearing about the history house and the people who have lived there. The guides in the house are all very informative.
B. W.
A wonderful historical building there's nothing the staff don't know and can't wait to share with every visitor. The price is just £7.50 and a ticket lasts a full year! This place is well worth a visit. We spent over an hour and a half here and I can imagine there's always something you've missed when you go back! Beautifully restored a jewel in the heart of York :)
L. B.
The staff and volunteers were so nice, answered my questions, and talked about each room when asked. They made me feel like I was a valued visitor and there was no rush. So far, my best historic experience in the UK (and I've had a lot of good experiences).
R. B.
I visited Fairfax house with my girlfriend, fully expecting her to enjoy it more than me!. Well, I must say that I was taken aback by the building and its faithfully and painstakingly restored interiors. It was outstanding and like stepping back in time. Absolutely beautiful. A special mention must go to the volunteer guides, whose enthusiasm and knowledge was fantastic.
j. j.
Very happy with our visit here. I especially am interested in Georgian furniture and the collection here is quite fantastic. Although no pictures are allowed, the book containing photos that I found in the gift shop was perfect. Definitely worth a visit!
M. M.
I visited Fairfax House for the first time recently when it was decorated for Christmas. The house is stunning and well furnished with pieces largely collected by a member of the Terry family. Lots of useful historical information is provided. The story of its restoration in the late 20th century is fascinating. Entry price is also very reasonable and included entry for a year. Highly recomnended.
J. M.
A really nice period house, beautifully restored (get volunteers to show you the pictures of how it was when they took it over - it's amazing how much they have done and how carefully it has been restored).
There are staff in every room ready and eager to tell you the story of the room and the furniture and answer any crazy questions you might have.
Not large but still well worth visiting (particularly if you have a York Pass).
S. A.
A beautiful house, with very friendly and informative staff. From the ornate Italian stucco ceilings to the hidden window shutters and chinoiserie wall coverings in Anne Fairfax's bedroom, not to mention the many treasures to be found in the kitchen, expertly explained by Michael, a self-confessed addict of the Georgian era and would-be re-enactor of WWII, I was able to fully indulge in my love of all things historical. A wonderful way to wile away a rainy afternoon (or any other) in York.
G. S.
We spent about an hour going through the rooms on a tour of the house by one of the docents. You get a great impression of how the people lived at that time and what they valued. Impressive furniture and paintings. Georgian town house style.
J. G.
The staff on duty on the day of my visit were wonderfully welcoming and enthusiastic about the house, it's history and collection of furniture. I would like to say thank you to them for creating such a lovely atmosphere in which to explore the rooms.
E. E.
I love this Georgian townhouse, it's been restored to pretty much its original state and really reflects georgian life. I love to be transported back in time and Fairfax House does exactly this! Staff are extremely accommodating too.
D. A.
Tour staff were nice. Interesting building.
S. T.
Pleasant out of the way museum about three minutes walk away from Clifford's Tower. Well presented and airy inside, uses a building which I believe used to be a cinema. Accessible parking is available on request.
Y. D.
Full of history and volunteers do a fantastic job, enjoyed our visit very much, wish we had more time for it
C. M.
Been 2x now and I really love this little gem of a museum. They have been so creative during lockdown and the staff are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic!
S. L.
Lovely house and the guides were so very knowledgeable. Little anecdotes here and there and lots of beautiful furniture to see, includi.g original Chuppendale drawers. Well Worth the visit.
P. W.
Interesting restored Georgian house. Includes a small exhibition of period clothing and shoes. The volunteers are helpful and knowledgeable. Note there is no toilet.

This hidden gem in York city centre is well worth the entrance fee - tickets valid for a year. As an Austen fan, I want to learn more in general about Georgian society. Although this house slightly pre-dates the Austen novels, it was still a very interesting and enjoyable couple of hours looking at the period furniture, clocks, portraits and interiors (albeit restored and reconstructed). The volunteers in each of the rooms were knowledgeable, chatty and friendly with answers to all sorts of obscure questions. I would normally rather go to a monument or ruin than a standing building but was pleasantly surprised that I found this to be such an amazing place. Highly recommended and I will certainly go again for another couple of hours on a wet Sunday afternoon.
G. B.
This was a fantastic tour around a Georgian House in York. The volunteers were very knowledgeable about the family who built the property. They even had mulled wine for Christmas in the Kitchen.
M. F.
Fantastic Georgian Town House and respectfully and painstakingly renovated to it's former glory. The guides are very friendly and knowledgeable. One of the best I've seen outside of Bath.
L. P.
We went on the guided tour, which we enjoyed immensely. The tour guide made a special fuss of my 10 and 7 year old children, with snippets of info that captured their imagination. We will return!!
R. D.
Very good - very well informed guide staff.
G. H.
Did the guided tour of this place that only runs on Fridays. Excellent.

J. N.
Stunning house. Interesting and knowledgeable staff. Glad to see the house returned to most of its former glory. We joined historic houses so got in free.
J. S.
A georgian town house with a fasinating past. A gem of a place to visit. The staff know so much about the the building, its residents and items within it. Currently also set up as it would have been for christmas. Worth going out of your way to visit.
E. W.
Beautiful building to visit. The volunteers seem to know absolutely everything about the house. Although i do sometimes prefer to view by myself...
E. H.
Me and my daughter enjoyed our visit . My daughter loved the activity of solving a crime and won a scroll. We would go back again.
J. K.
Once of my most enjoyable experiences in York. The house is incredibly beautiful, rich with history, and the keepers are friendly and happy to explain the story of Fairfax and the surrounding area.
D. P. R.
Wonderful Georgian townhouse. The furniture is not original to the house but it's the same period. Some chippendale among it, bequested by a local gentleman who made a fortune as a chocolate manufacturer. The volunteers explain the family history of the Fairfax (Catholics in a then predominantly protestant country). Beautiful interiors with colours faithful to the style, reproducions of the original wallpaper and silk in some rooms. No pictures allowed for the sake of preservation. If you love Georgian interiors it's unmissable.
J. S.
Easily one of the best places in York. The guides are lovely volunteers - and very knowledgeable. The house itself is beautiful and interesting .

(Translated) A wonderful small museum, the rooms of which, unlike similar museums, are fully equipped (even the food of the time is on the table in the dining room, saloon with gaming table with cards and playing chips etc, library, smoking room, kitchen, dressing table with all items in the 2nd bedrooms) so that one feels transported back in time (1760s and 1770s). Each room has a different friendly volunteer guide waiting for you to ask about details.

(Translated) It is worth going on a guided tour - extremely interesting stories in carefully kept interiors. We felt a bit silly when the guide mentioned the closure of the founder's factory due to the transfer of production to Poland, but I highly recommend it. Maciej recommended it to us and again it turned out that he was right.
