Reviews of Joseph Rowntree Theatre

What a venue.....a great historical building where I competed in a recent bodybuilding show. The staff were great.....and it was interesting to learn the history of such a great venue which to this day keeps with traditional values of its purpose to bring families and community together.
C. C.
Absolutely brilliant. Such a well performed show (Oliver). The cast did a wonderful job. Would highly recommend. We had a really lovely evening.
D. L.
Again a really good pantomime. The volunteers are always helpful and friendly also think the caravan outside is a good idea with hot, cold and alcoholic drinks.well done again
J. A.
I enjoyed the Robin Hood theatre drama. My family loved it, certainly we will visit again
S. R.
Watched an amazing show, CATS. Lovely little old theatre. Small and intimate. Friendly staff and volunteers. Highly recommend visiting. And if you can afford £5 to their roof appeal, that would be help to keep thw lovely grade 2 listed building going.
M. L.
Lovely theater. Very friendly and helpful staff
C. T.
Reviews as a performer, this is a lovely community theatre, excellent and helpful, really nice homely feel. Would be delighted to revisit and play there again. Many thanks to you all.
T. H.
Went to see Matt Rendall at the theatre, first time here, beautiful inside, not too big so have a good sense of intimacy with the performance. Has a bar inside and out for intermission.
b. t.
Lovely place to see a show and we had an enjoyable experience
The views from all areas of the theatre were good and everyone had no problem in seeing the stage
A good place to see shows from
E.
Great little theatre, been here several times to see my daughter perform, seats could be comfier typical small theatre serving overpriced ice cream/confectionary at the break but you comedy expect that. The parking is a bit of a walk if you have mobility issues
s. l.
Really nice venue, went to see Tubular Bells, live music on stage. They sell alcohol which you can take to the seats and a really nice bunch of staff selling snacks
G. G.
It is away from the centre of York and so parking is easy. It was good for us as we could park right outside the building so my Husband didn't have far to walk, as he's disabled. The side entrance of the building also meant we didn't have to use any steps which was great for him. The seats were pretty comfy and everyone seemed to be able to see the stage very well whether front or back. It's a lovely little theatre and I am sure that we will go again in the future.
V. W.
Fabulous performance of Jekyll and Hyde! Steven Jobson did an amazing job as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Amazing songs throughout with a very talented cast and orchestra. The best musical I have attended bar none. Lovely small theatre with very friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommended 👏🏻👏🏻
F. M.
Small friendly theatre although I didn’t have the best view of the stage
G. R.
Not sure if great for accessibility but a lovely small theatre
R. P.
Saw Roxy Music cover band. Nice old venue, pretty comfy seating and OK sound too.
M. T.
Volunteer run theatre which puts on a variety of events at reasonable prices
E. L.
A nicely refurbished venue to see a show.
And free parking thrown in! This aspect alone makes it unique in York!
A. H.
Excellent little theatre. All seats with a good view, due to off set and sloped floor. Good audio.
F. D.
Fantastic performance by Roxy Magic, lovely theatre and friendly, welcoming staff
B. T.
One of the finest theatres in York. I have performed here many times in the Steve Cassidy Band and we always have a great time. Great staff, sound engineers and not forgetting the fantastic audience always make it a night to remember.
D. L.
We visit here often as we live close by, and we have never been disappointed. In fact, we saw the "9 to 5" musical only this week, and it was amazing! A lovely theatre and everybody works so hard.
A. T.
Just attended the 9 to 5 show.
Music a little too loud, overpowered the singing. Most of the singing was shouting. I know they are new to theatre and maybe just my opinion.
Main complaint really is the rude man who greeted us as we entered the building. It may have been 10 mins to 7 but the door was unlocked and we entered. He then asked where our seats were...on the balcony. Well you can go up there but you will be on your own was his reply. Very unhelpful and just plain rude!
S. T.
Very nice art deco theatre which should be cherished.
A. H.
Lovely theatre, the auditorium looks new whilst maintaining its art deco nature.
Very well run with excellent 'covid protection' when I visited yesterday. Felt very 'safe' and fantastic to be back in a theatre for a live performance.
B. S.
Theatre seating very comfortable and excellent for seeing
The ladies toilets although clean were not very efficient
J. R.
Travelled from Hull to watch my nephew and company perform. Small cosy theatre with comfy seats and friendly, helpful staff. No bar but delicious ice-cream. Worth the journey.
M. C.
Wonderful venue for a children's show. My 7-year-old grandaughter had a excellent view of the stage and the acoustics were good too. Reminded me of the theatres I attended as a child.
D. R.
A beautiful deco theatre witch is community run so has a very family feel to it. Nice and clean with excellent staff on duty. Comfy seats with good legroom.
M. H.
Great local venue with comfortable seats. Free car park too
E. P.
Lovely old theatre. Many different shows featuring local talent. Always an enjoyable evening.
E. C.
I WENT TO SEE OLIVER IT WAS SO GOOD ALL THE CAST WAS BRILLENT
R. P.
Lovely venue to gig at. Great sound crew and amazing audience.
S. R.
Seen a great show, had a good night out .
c. h.
Attended the Rowntree Players Panto. The show was brilliant and all our party felt very safe with all the covid restrictions in place. We loved having our ice creams delivered to our seats too!
A. H.
Easy to book online. Lovely little theatre.
R. S.
Another great visit to watch my daughter take part in a dance show. The show was fantastic.
The theater is a great venue. Run and staffed by friendly volunteers. The production quality is very high. We are lucky to have such a place in York.
C. H.
A lovely little theatre with some great productions. Easy to get to, and free parking available nearby.
S. S.
Lovely art deco theatre with very good sight lines.
M. A.
The panto season usually fills me with dread, standing closer to 7 foot tall than 6, theatre seats are not kind to me! However I was pleasantly surprised at the pitch and the width of the seats here! Staff seemed to really care about the theatre, which was nice to see. Decent parking although a little walk from the building.
I. F.
What a fantastic Theatre. We were there with the York RI Golden Rail Band and York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir to stage Only Brass and Voices. Besides a great performance from both groups of musicians, the real stars of the show were the theatre crew, stewards and stage manager, Ollie. All volunteers and all brilliant at what they do. Thanks for making our good performance great.
G. M.
Went to see Carpenters was good night , staff very helpful one staff lady let us move seats as my friend had boot on and needed more room she was lovely but didn't get her name 😊
F. W.
No bar service and the staff seemed very rushed to get people out after show. Comfortable seats though
L. H.
This is a great little theater that provides a place for local groups and small theater companies to put on performances that are quality but reasonably priced.
S. M.
Lovely local theatre, comfy and traditional. Great show.
J. T.
A great pantomime will come again.
A. B.
My husband & I have just watched the production of The Lion The Witch & The Wardrobe. What a fantastic time we had. The effects were stunning, we've never seen anything like it. Amazing. We loved the way the cast were in the audience before the show, & so many of them too. They all did brilliantly singing & dancing. Throughly enjoyed the evening. Wished we lived nearer to see more productions.
L. N.
A lovely theatre, run entirely by volunteers and showcasing lots of local talent. The groups who hire the theatre for their performances dictate the prices of tickets, not the theatre. There are a great range of shows on offer throughout the year. Now that the theatre is owned by the J R Theatre, there will be much fundraising to improve some of the facilities, something that could not be contemplated when it was owned by St John's University. There is always room for more volunteers to steward or backstage.
S. A. G.
Very good spacious theatre, well laid out
Staff very friendly.
K. F.
Went to Joseph Rowntree Theatre last night for a show. Parking just two minutes' walk from the theatre. Excellent covid arrangements. Socially distanced seating, temperature taken on the way in. Refreshments pre-ordered and brought to you at the interval. And the show - Jessa Liversidge's "Songbirds" was truly outstanding.
W. P.
I took my six year old granddaughter to see the panto last night and she loved it. Amateur dramatics are fantastic, so professional. The facilities here are great and everyone does a great job to ensure you have a great experience. Would highly recommend it.
R. B.
Loop was great. This is the first theatre in a long while where I have been able to hear through the loop. Thanks
J. E.
Visited as a performer. Volunteer run organisation. Lovely people got things done. Management could do with relaxing and learning to improvise a bit, to strict.
R. R.
Lovely venue, we went there to see the teathre representation of The Missing Peace by Big Ian Donaghy and loved every minute!
C. H.
Lovely intimate theatre offering a great variety of entertainment. Well kept venue and great view wherever you sit in the theatre. Local amateur dramatics groups there so ticket prices are not over inflated either.
T. W.
Missing peace fantastic the cast were amazing it was very close to my heart came out feeling that i can get through this. So thank you
R. G.
Excellent theatre. Vigilant about covid precautions. Attended Songs from the Shows which was very enjoyable. Well done one and all.
M. E.
What a nice little theatre for a night out. Free parking nearby for the show too makes this even more of a bargain. Our family night out to see The Producers was a real treat. We'll definitely be looking for opportunities to go back here in the future.
J. W.
A small but amazing theatre. Staff friendly and welcoming.
M. B.
A lovely theatre for amateur productions With professional lighting and stage crew however it is closed. At the present time with the covid closure
R. F.
JRTheatre is a lovely homely and pleasant small theatre to watch the kind of shows that we go and see.
K. Z.
A cracker of a theatre with some superb acts taking place throughout the year. Being a small venue it's best to book seats early, especially for the popular shows, lest you be disappointed.
S. S.
Lovely community theatre welcoming local production groups to put on an array of performances. Refreshments available, as well as toilets, although you may have a wait for the ladies!
C. D.

Went to see Oddsocks production of Pinocchio. Innovative, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable. The theatre is easy to find and not too large.
C. G.
A unique building from the Art Deco period, this is the only purpose-built proscenium theatre with a flying tower (for scenery) created by Quakers. The local Rowntree family of chocolate makers intended it for their workers and other local people to enjoy. It is named after the head of that family, but was the work of Peter Rowntree supported by Seebohm Rowntree who also led the founding of the Citizens' Theatre Company that runs York's even more prestigious Theatre Royal. It is now run skilfully and successfully by volunteers, offering a varied programme throughout the year. Well worth a visit.
S. R.
