Reviews of York Mansion House

A look back at colorful history!
The building is designed in Georgian architecture style.
Multiple floors - Each of them having distinct and beautiful things. There were amazing trophies, an interactive kitchen with both online and physical interactions possible.
The lavish dining tables and utensils showed the rich feast. There was a wedding hall like place which had velvet carpets and some terrific paintings.
Lot of dresses, hats and many accessories etc were kept for people to freely dress up and feel like a king.
Overall its a must go place when you are in York.
Visit duration- 45min to 1hour
Its suitable for kids too.

Must have spent nearly 2 hours exploring the rooms in here, so interesting we lost all track of time. We'll worth a visit.

We visited the museum during the Ghost Week so we had a little game to play around the museum. It was really fun to do! The staff was adorable and friendly. The museum itself was also very beautiful. We absolutely loved it!

This is a really lovely place. Official residence of the Lord Mayor and a perfectly preserved Georgian house. Amazing stuff inside and very imaginatively presented, both with good interactive displays and by informed and enthusiastic volunteers. A happy couple of hours poking about to see it properly

Magnificent house to visit in the center of York. You must book in advance your tickets, even tough it snot difficult to find a day.
The house is the York Mayor official House and you can visit all the rooms of the mansion. It's from XVIII century and it's well decorated. The most impressive part is the recreation of the Kitchen. Furthermore, it includes interactive attractions for all the family.
It's worth to mention that the entrance is free if you are a York resident.
The house provides you an audio guide for free with a table to know the usage of each room. It's worth to take it.

A well kept secret. Having lived in York all our lives this was our first visit. We were amazed by the collection of silverware and how far back some of the exhibits go back.
We throughly enjoyed our visit.
Do not rely on their website though as it is not correct - Opening hours were not correct & online booking wasn't operational

Great value for money. Lots to see. Really interesting.

A surprise in the city centre. Very closed to Betty's I never thought this was a house people could visit. They've been open for only two years and it's not advertised as other attractions. The staff was very friendly. My daughter did a gingerbread trail and she got a nice gift at the end. Spread on 3 floors, this mansion is beautiful. The kitchen has a big table where kids can play an interactive game cooking old recipes. Someone from the staff also showed us how to cook a gingerbread recipe from Georgian days. Some rooms need a little more improvement I think (being a little bare) . Second floor is a grandious state room with dressing up available for both kids and adults. Third floor has a silver gallery where children can use crayons to print coins designs. It took us over a hour to visit. Some visitors had a tablet with them with a voice explaining the rooms. It wasn't offered to us for some reason. The entrance price is reasonable with discount for York residents.

Great historic location. Staff were extremely friendly and guide knew all about the exibit. Very funny man and convinced me to dress up as a Lord Mayor!

Nice baroque house that gives an idea of the splendour of Georgian times. EH members get a discount.

Beautiful 18th century building, formerly occupied by the lord mayor. Great to be able to see inside, a glimpse into the high life, amazing rooms.

Beautiful, lovely displays of silver ware perhaps not the best for young children although you can try on the Lord Mayor's robes!

We had a lovely walk around Mansion House as part of York Residents weekend. I've never visited the whole time I've lived in York, which is very poor on my part! There was an exhibition (no photos allowed) which unearthed planning permission for various buildings in York that never came to fruition (very interesting). Well worth a visit for an insight into history, though sadly the exhibition, I believe, was only for that day - most likely due to it being residents weekend.

The house Is not that complete, neither that well maintained.
Notwithstanding this, I was amazed by the list of all 505 York Majors between 1217 AND 2022 on the stairs wall. My family name doesn't appear there!
G. J.
Lovely place, full of historical facts with beautiful architecture. Great cooking demonstration in the kitchen as well.

Very pretty well kept house worth a visit. Ask for the audio guide device when buying your ticket (it's free) and your visit will be much more enjoyable! Staff was friendly and helpful. They recommended a great Cosy cafe afterwards where we had a lovely hot chocolate (best in york!)!

The lower part is unbelievable, one of the best examples of an older house I've seen and exquisitely set out. Upper floor is about silver and gold artefacts of York which isn't my thing but interesting to some. Great staff, very friendly and informative. House has had major refurbishment and restoration and you can tell it is absolutely outstanding.

Excellent place to visit, you get an audio guide when you arrive which they can either give you an iPad or you can download it on your phone. There is also some helpful staff inside which gave us some great insights. The house gives you access to the downstairs kitchen and butlers quarters, the dining room and the state room.

A nice example of British Georgian building. Very well kept. Personnel friendly and kind

York mansion was really good to visit, it felt coronavirus friendly and booking a time slot was really easy. The guided tour was really good especially as they have recently started doing this. It was good to know the history behind this place.

Wonderful building and history but a little cold for a wedding venue
A. O.
Lovely building, spotlessly decorated and displays smart. The guide in the kitchen very informative. Interesting interactive kitchen video

First time they had offered 'back stage' tours of the House whilst doing the annual conservation. Small afternoon tea included too. Looking forward to returning later in the year, when the House is open fully to the public. Very enjoyable visit!

Situated in the heart of the city and in a prime location on St Helen’s Square, York’s Mansion House is undoubtedly one of York’s finest buildings and is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York. I was invited to attend one of their guided tours, which have been adapted in light of the current situation. The tours started again on the 22nd July with smaller group sizes and hand sanitising stations are in every room for you to use as much as you like, guests are also asked to wear a face covering throughout the duration of the tour. The slight modifications and the steps that have been put into place didn’t at all detract from the fantastic experience of our guided tour.
In the entrance we met with our tour guide who was very informative about the history of the house and she had a wealth of knowledge about Mayoral life in York. Home to York’s Lord Mayor for 800 years, our tour started by following our guide up the sweeping staircase to see all four floors of the building. From the beautiful State Room to the perfectly restored 18th century kitchen, which was my favourite room of the house and definitely one of the highlights of the tour, every room is rich in history and has a story to tell.
With each tour lasting 45 minutes it was certainly a very enjoyable visit. They have a large assortment of paintings, silver, glassware and furniture, holding one of the largest collections of civic plates in England, outside of London.
The house is actually still a home to the Lord Mayor of York and is very much the beating heart of this vibrant city. Also if you’re lucky enough to live in York, you will receive 50% off admission prices. I’d definitely recommend a visit here.

The place is beautiful and so interesting.
I enjoyed the interactive video demonstration on cooking woodcock and beef. There are information points in each room and some children's activities, too. A great use of a couple of hours.
G. S.
A very nice house which is restored to the Georgian period. It is the Mayor's house, and still used for events. There was cooking in the kitchen in the morning prior to the arrival. Large open hearth which was impressive. 4 floors are open to tour with an audio guide which is included. The city's silver and some plate and glassware is on display and impressive. The hours are limited so check the web site for when it is open as that can change based on other city events.
S. M.
Very nicely presented period property with a good audio - visual guide on an i-pad which they lend you. Not much by way of wow factor, but enjoyed the visit. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

Superb for little ones.
Staff really go out their way to get kids interested wither it be the dressing up or the activities they really are focused on ensuring that little ones enjoy themselves.
Some stunning things to view in the building which often has guides on hand who really know thier stuff they have an interactive iPad tour which guides you round the building from reception.
Really look forward to going back as does our youngest who had a great ti.w with all the craft activities.
Give yourself a couple of hours to do justice to this gem of a building in the city centre.

Been trying to visit here in recent years but they had a major refurbishment so we had to wait a few years. Worth the wait!! Lovely helpful staff who are not in your faces. Lovely building and excellent set up. Nice to get away from the crowds and see how the other half live. Really enjoyed our visit today and planned to return in the near future.

Worth a visit - well presented town house from a time gone by
We visited late one afternoon and were the only people there but it felt very empty as there were no staff around to speak too or offer up information. It was something that id say might only take an hour or so maximum and if there were tours it would have probably been a nicer experience
K. k.
Spent a really enjoyable few hours here. We took our daughter who uses a powered wheelchair and the whole house is accessible which was a welcome surprise. Staff really helpful and informative.

This is a lovely place to visit. The self-guided tablet was useful and we were impressed with the interactive cooking demo in the kitchen! Worth going.

One of the gems in York. Renovated recently. It's worth a visit to see more of York's great history and the life of the Mansion House. Check website for further details.

As with Fairfax House, a true Georgian masterpiece filled with physical and intellectual history and beauty. It is, very much, something to be proud of here in York. Long may it stand watch over Saint Helen's Square and enrich the lives of the citizens of the city and of those who come to marvel at its wonders.
C. G.
Open day for York residents was a treat. Lots of interesting contents and interactive screens worth looking at for a glimpse of the site's fascinating history.
S. M.
Very interesting place to visit. Still used by the mayor of York for functions.
J. L.
Interesting residence of our Lord Mayor with views over the city that one usually doesn't get. But it doesn't have an ornate chair carved from bog oak like the one in Doncaster Mansion House! (I have split loyalties).
S. P.
Interesting building lots of history, free audio guide, good room guides. The silver collection is excellent.
