Reviews of York's Chocolate Story
P.
Had a lovely tour of this place! Tour guide was great, friendly and funny and very informative too! Really nice to try different chocolates and to make our own lollipops too! Highly recommend!
K. B.
Had a really lovely experience here. The shop on the main floor is fabulous and is great for finding gifts for various occasions. The tour was interesting and our guide Robbie was witty and did a great job of managing the diverse group. Loved that we got to learn about the history of chocolate production in York as well as produce some of our own creations. Good value for money and a very York appropriate experience.
A.
Amazing experience!! Had been recommended by a family member and was definitely worth the visit! The tour guide (I think his name was Daniel?) really knew his stuff and was really interesting to listen to. Fab tour with lots of information being shared, plus all the chocolate samples too!! We decided to treat ourselves to a fondue with marshmallows and strawberries afterwards from the shop. 10/10 will recommend and definitely be back!!
S.
I must admit, I was very impressed.
Initially, when I saw that a full ticket cost £15, I thought that this will be a ripoff, imagining that it is actually nothing to see inside. But…..🥰😍after a 20 minute wait the story of chocolate began.
I will not spoil the experience for those who have never been, but we just came out and already planning to visit it again tomorrow as our two and half year old fallen asleep at the end when it was the most interesting part for kids.
I really recommend this place, very nice experience, plenty of chocolate for you to try and a little gift for each visitor.

Love the chocolate and Scarlet’s sweet voice! We all enjoyed her story telling about the history of chocolate in York, from how it started to what we have now. She’s so professional and answered all the questions we had. And more importantly, we all know the trick to show others what to do before we swallow chocolate now! 😆
J. B.
When I first booked for me and my two children (8+4) I thought it was quite expensive and I still do as my 4 year old didn't engage as much as my 8 year old.
The tour and more so our guide Josh was actually far better than I thought and I found the history quite fascinating. The different rooms with its use on technology was great and the free samples handed out too added to the historical journey.
The kids (and I) loved making our own chocolate lollies and seeing the chocoltier make chocolate chocolates in front of us which we then got to sample. A great 90mins well spent.
J. B.
One of my favourite things I did in York. You can get a tour for £15 which includes a history of chocolate starting from the Aztec’s to today. You get to learn about how chocolate is made and even get to decorate your own chocolate pop which is great fun. You get a demo of how chocolates are made and get to have some to eat. You also get shown how chocolatiers taste chocolate. There’s lots of tasting options available throughout the Tour plus a goodie bag! 100% recommend! Our guide Scarlett was amazing too!
B. C.
The York Chocolate Story is not only informative but it is an incredibly enjoyable experience.
Our guide (Katie) was incredibly knowledgeable about all information related to the tour, and was engaging the group we were in well. I had been a little bit concerned when I saw the price of the tour, as I have previously been on the Cadbury tour, which is £6 more expensive than the York Tour.
My concerns though were completely unwarranted! In comparison (in my experience) you get a much more personalised experience in York. It is not the all day experience you will receive at Cadbury but you are getting a tour guide who can answer all questions, and will do so in a way that makes everyone engaged.
It is not only worth the money, but anything you buy from the shop will be well worth the treat!
Thank you for an amazing experience!
N. B.
Amazing experience, if the tour wasn't about chocolate, I think Katie would have stolen the show, she really took it from a good experience, and made it an excellent one, what an asset to the company,
Information excellent, chocolate making fantastic.
Thank you
G.
Had a lovely experience at York Chocolate story shop museum.
The tour was interesting and staff were very professional.
Learned all about the history of chocolate and the production of it being made in York.
Good value for money and you make own chocolate lolly to take home 😋.
A. S.
History of York and its Chocolate makers.
Not to spoil to much, it was a great visit. Just me and the wife went, we arrived about 20 mins early and had to wait, but as it was snowing we was happy to wait inside. As we was waiting someone walked in asking for a tour, and was told booked up till 430pm, we was their for the 1pm, and they happen every 15 mins, so my advice is, weekends or kids holidays book in advance.
Lewis was our tour guide, and was very knowledgeable, I learnt so much inc. The origins of Chocolate. As part of the tour, there's plenty of involvement, interaction and making your own Chocolate etc. Would we recommend it? Yes we would
L. s.
Great tour, informative but not boring. Little tasters on the way and you get to make a white chocolate lolly at the end. Well worth a visit
E. S.
We loved it! The visit is interactive and the history of chocolate is told to us by an employee of the chocolate factory. We were with Robby (I believe) who was very friendly and dynamic. We received chocolates several times during the visit and we could even see the creation of one of them. We also "made" our own chocolate lollipops. It was a very unique visit that I would recommend to any foodie!
S. C.
Booked a tour for the morning of Easter Sunday. Chocolate for breakfast at Easter, what's not to love! Will actually do this again, doubt it would ever get boring. Very interesting, lots of cool stories and facts. The young girl leading the tour was an absolute delight. Plus she kept the supply of sweeties coming. My other half loved it. Very informal but informative. Best chocolate oriented tour we have done for fun factor and affordability.
T. H.
Very good experience! You get to try chocolate whilst you are learning about chocolate history, very interesting. You even get to make your own chocolate lolly at the end and you get to watch them make chocolates and then try one! There was also a mini museum that you walk around and read for yourself after the tour which was interesting. There were also interesting things to look at during the tour such as a short clip about the discovery of chocolate, talking photos on the wall and photographs from when chocolate factories first opened. Very good experience! The only thing I wasn't happy about was the booking system. We went a few months back and tried to enter on a whim, just to be told its book only. So this time, we booked online to ensure a spot. But when we got there, a couple behind us just walked in and got on our tour without booking online! I hate places that say no to you but let others do the same. But overall a very intriguing experience.
L. O.
A must for any chocolate lover! A really fun interactive tour and our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. At the end it was topped off by making our own chocolate lollipops and coating delicious truffles. We also got sent home with even more goodies, some of which we saw getting made! My partner and I loved our experience here.
M. G.
Such a fun tour! It exceeded our expectations. It was fun to learn about the history of chocolate and the part York played in it.
D. N.
Fun, interesting experience with lots of tasting and making chocolates! My 12 year old really enjoyed it. I don't think very young children would appreciate it though. Tour guide Daniel was very good and Robbie was fun with his chocolate making.
S. D.
Loved the tour by Robbie & the history of making York chocolates, beautiful experience making my own lolly
A. R.
Today we had the pleasure of enjoying the experience with Nick as our guide, he was brilliant! We had lots of questions and he was extremely knowledgeable and added so much to our experience! I would definitely recommend to anyone who is even remotely interested in chocolate, there were lots of samples to try and it was interactive so would be good for children too! Our visit ended with a chance yo make our own chocolate and a demonstration of how they make their own chocolate by a resident chocolatier!
Brilliant experience and well worth the money!
S. B.
It was really a fun trip to learn about the chocolate story in York, we were the first tour of the day and had loads of time to ask questions. The guide was really great, knew his stuff and was happy to share his knowledge.
The demo was super fun to watch and the lolly making part was great.
Well worth a visit.
R. L.
Had an amazing time here with the family. Gina was an amazing tour guide. She made the history of chocolate in York incredibly captivating for the kids... Not an easy task!! She really seems to enjoy what she does. Sam the Chocolatier topped the day off with a great chocolate making experience.
A fantastic experience all around and highly recommended!
P. G.
Great tour and surpassed my expectations. Educational, fun, and a great guide. Plus we ate a ton of chocolate as part of the tour
T. C.
Had a really great time here! Katie was an amazing guide and they have a really well put together tour. There has clearly been a lot of planning and work put into the presentation, and there's plenty of chocolate to taste. If you find yourself in York and you like chocolate, you must go for a visit, it's well worth it.
D. N.
Great attraction to visit, very interesting and get to take some goodies home.
On our visit, there were some technical issues but the guest experience manager came in, explained ot to us and provided amazing service recovery for the situation. So pleased with the tour team. Ellie (tour guide) was fantastic, she gives loads of energy, keeps you gripped and very knowledge.
K. D.
A lovely day out. It was really made special by the enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide we had (young white man, slim and very tall!) who had so many facts and stories about chocolate!
Will definitely return when my baby daughter is older.
D. B.
This is the history of chocolate and sweets in Yorkshire. It's interesting, interactive and best of all, you get chocolates. All in all a good way to spend an hour. Not the cheapest event but still worth it.
The best part for me was the chocolatier making fresh filled chocolates that were then distributed to the participants.
D. M.
Brilliant highly recommended. Staff were fantastic, even just while waiting for the lift, we were being informed and entertained.
Daniel, our guide, was knowledgeable and very enthusiastic!
Lasts about an hour or so, but time flies by. Loved it.
Colieac aware and prepared, but final stage is a potential nightmare - just gave mine away!
J. C.
Guide was very knowledgeable and a good laugh really enjoyed our day would definitely visit again was great value for money A++++++
j. H.
The history of chocolate in York is interesting and you also get some free chocolate.
Would have been better if it included an actual factory tour.
J. E.
It was a small museum, but fun and unique, and had free chocolate, which is always a plus. There is also a cafe and gift shop, which you can visit without taking the tour. You can book tickets online, but you don't have to. The plus side of booking online is that you know what time the tour is going to be offered, so if you buy in person, you might have to wait for the next tour.
S. W.
ELLIE was a wonderful host for the tour. Was great 👍 made a choc lolly. Watched a interesting video sketch. Informative history of chocolate. Given tasters. All round well worth a visit.
C. B.
Had an amazing time with the guided tour which was lead by Josh. It was fun and there was lots of ways to get involved. Making our own chocolate lollypops was a nice touch.
Would recommend booking in advance but it is reasonably priced, especially if you're a student as they offer a student discount.
N. W.
Great experience and highly recommend the chocolate tour. Both adults and children enjoyed this, with great information, chocolate making and tasting. Our guide Katie was fantastic! Definitely a must do when visiting York
R. C.
Super tour and highly recommended for both kids and grown ups. Doesn't take up too much of your day, comes with chocolate tasters throughout, I enjoyed it far more than Cadbury World and the shop at the end is much better too with some really interesting flavours and gifts.
H. P.
Great tour and amazing smells as you go round. Get to taste as well as hear about the history of chocolate in York.
A. D.
An amazing experience yesterday at York Chocolate Story! Didn’t expect the size of the building from the front, and the guided tour by Ellie was brilliant!! Would recommend! Also lots of samples and the hot chocolate is lovely!
E. M.
Superb. Our tour guide – the excellent Joe – joked that there is a friendly historical rivalry between York chocolatiers and those in Birmingham who favour purple wrappers, but having now toured both I can say that there is no contest: York wins hands down. The tour was funny yet informative with plenty of opportunities to sample both the finished product (yum) and the raw ingredients (yuck!!). I was also impressed by the staff’s awareness of allergies and had appropriate substitutes on hand at every stage.
r. o.
This is my second visit. A really great experience and informative tour. Oscar was a welcoming and friendly guide and made the experience 5 stars. I preferred this to the Cadbury's tour because the staff who take you round seem to love their job and it feels more family friendly and less commercialised. My only comment for improvement would be that the staff in the shop at the entrance are not as friendly. Otherwise, it was a perfect day.
J.
We made a visit to this attraction and was not disappointed, whilst it is fairly quick going you are kept entertained by the tour guide was thoroughly impressed with his performance and he knew his facts. You are able to make chocolate 🍫 lollies 🍭 and truffles I believe you may have to select that option but it's a bit of good fun.
P. A.
It was a bit expensive for what it is, although we had a lot of fun and we got to learn a lot. Our guide, Katie, was really nice to us and she explained things very well so that you don’t get bored. We tried a couple of types of chocolates and we made a chocolate lolly and the truffle thing. Good experience in general.
D. M.
Not a bad experience. Daniel our guide was knowledgeable and handled little ones very well. Nowhere did it mention the parent company is now nestle (or their absolutely appalling human rights record). Quite expensive, but a decent experience for the children if you are happy to ignore the hypocrisy which obviously I was.
P. C.
My partner and I loved our tour of York's Chocolate Story today. Katie was a really knowledgeable and engaging tour guide and the tour was really well-structured. Learnt a lot and ate a lot of interesting chocolates! The interactive element was fun - something a bit different! :-)
M. J. G.
Had a lovely tour this morning round York's Chocolate Story. Our tour guide, Katie was brilliant guiding us through the wonderful place and the history of chocolate. Would definitely recommend!
M. W.
had a super good time here!! the tour guides and chocolatiers are funny and always in a great mood! our tour guide was daniel and he was very informative and made us all laugh (and gave us lots of chocolate)!! you definitely get your moneys worth 10/10 would recommend
N. N.
York's Chocolate Story was an amazing day trip. As a family of four we loved the journey through tike, we loved meeting the historical chocolate innovators and of course the regular opportunities to taste chocolates.
M.
So much fun. Our guide Josh (hopefully that was his name) was really friendly and engaging. Was also really aware of peoples allergies and had things prepared just in case. It was funny to here video game references such as Animal Crossing and Pokémon which our group appreciated very much.
Got to hear about the history of York and it’s chocolate families, the origins of chocolate itself and making our own lollies + truffles.
It’s some of the nicest chocolate I’ve tasted (as my partner bought a customised bar with my name on it as an extra for the tour)
M. D.
Daniel was our tour guide today and he was brilliant. So entertaining and enthusiastic. I learned so much about chocolate today and its history with York. I've done other tours around chocolate factories and this is by far the best one.
K. B.
Really enjoyed our tour and learning about both the history and making of chocolate. Our guide, Ellie(?), was very engaging and clearly passionate about what she does which is very refreshing.
B. C.
Amazing visit with 12 Scouts. Oscar was our guide and we couldn’t have asked for anyone better. So a real thank you to him. He was idea for the scouts and could answer absolutely anything they asked him.
Thank you Oscar
R. O.
My partner and I had a wonderful time on the York Chocolate Tour and learnt a lot about the history of chocolate and the families that began making it. Scarlett was our tour guide and she was so helpful and very well spoken, although we had some difficult people on the tour that would not listen, she persevered and kept it professional and fun.
K. M.
80th Birthday outing for my mum.Excellent experience for both young and old.Informative and fun....also great taster chocolate.Enjoyed making our own chocolate lollipops.
Thank you to Nick who was a fabulous tour guide and made my mum feel extra special.
J. F.
A great afternoon - fun, interesting and our two young daughters loved it. I'd say it is a bit on the pricey side, but the tour guide, Lee, was fantastic and made us feel welcome and engaged from the very start.
B. F.
Brill experience, tour was fine but would have liked time to actually interact with something instead if just reading, we all enjoyed making our lollies. Shop afterwards well stocked but didn't really buy anything x
N. A.
A very accessible introduction into chocolate. They also address the fact that chocolate was stolen from Mesoamérica. They don’t dwell on the matter but it is mentioned quickly in a video. Good for all ages. Our guide Lee was amazing!!! Friendly, happy, helpful, excited, funny and welcoming. Absolutely happy place. Sam the chef was a happy ray of laughing sunshine too. They give a lot of samples (during covid you must eat them after leaving the shop) and the hot chocolate down below is delicious. The 70% Equador was really good. They do have standard chocolate like Yorkie but they also have some of England’s craft chocolate makers like Willie’s cacao and some of the new trendy Ruby chocolate (google it) in drink and bar form. Very well run place. Oh! You also make a chocolate lollipop too and they have an exhibit on the history of the Kit Kat. There are 4 million Kit Kat bars made a day in York.
K. S.
In relation to Cadbury World this is smaller, but well worth a visit. The guide was funny friendly and very knowledgeable. Samples were given during the tour. There were short films explaining the history of chocolate and talks by the guide. The process of how chocolate is made was shown and we got to make our own lollypops, which was fun. Who knew there were so many flavours of KitKat! An enjoyable visit, well worth a look if you are in York.
J. P.
Very busy and with only a few seats to sit inside. I would have thought for such an attraction the cafe would be bigger. Saying that, we bought some lovely chocolate.
S. C.
What a wonderful experience! Our tour guide Gina enthralled us with the history of Chocolate in York and England. I would definitely recommend!
S. W.
I absolutely love chocolate and wanted to learn more about the history of chocolate in York. There were elements of the museum/ tour I found interesting. I thought the tour guide Lee was really friendly and interactive with us.
The videos were also really interesting but I felt a bit robbed as we didn't see everything that was meant to be seen in the tour. Felt more like it was about how to make chocolate / decorate chocolate rather than the history of certain products that Rowantree / Nestle created. We didn't really go through the history of Kitkats etc when we were promised we would find out more about this.
The sample bags were a bit disappointing - small bag with one kitkat bar and couple sweets but this isn't a factory. I would bump up my review to 5* if the tour was longer and we had more samples that aren't limited to bitter dark chocolate. Expected a bit more from this museum.
D. (. &. C. O.
A fantastic tour explaining the background of chocolate and how it arrived in York. Great interactive experience for both adults and children. Each room you visited had its own theme (explaination), journey of cacao. Tour guide was fun and friendly. The chocolatier we met made making chocolate shapes a breeze! I loved the chocolate chess board! Tasting the bitter water was great, eating the unprocessed choco, and making your own choco lolly is a chocoholics dream. The shop sells so much chocolate that you are spoilt for choice. Great idea with the cafe inside, next time I will try a hot chocolate. Great vegan selection of chocs too (thank you for the mint dark choc, it was fab). Loved the interactive family portrait room, its like a magic show!? Lots of little choc freebees, a great place to go when you visit York.
G. W.
Great little tour. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Good couple of hours, and obviously the chocolate was fab
M. O.
Educational and a fun experience. It's well presented with some participation. The history of chocolate making in York is very interesting.
L.
The tour guide Serena was friendly and knowledgeable.
Probably more of an activity for kids but for £15 you get very few samples (considering the lady was saying how many millions of Kit Kat’s are produced each day in York).
Wouldn’t come back again unfortunately.
How I Rate:
I normally rate 1-4, with 5 reserved for ’Exceptional’, i.e. “deviating from the norm” or “truly worthy of note”.
* 4 stars = Very good
* 3 stars = Good
* 2 stars = Average or acceptable
* 1 stars = Poor
D. T.
Interesting tour with a knowledgeable guide and lots of tasting along the way. Got to make (and eat!) our own chocolate lollies at the end too.
c. p.
If you need a variety of Lindt or have a family/friend who may be a little chocolate obsessed, this is your place to be.
C. L.
The tour guide Gina was what made the tour, she was absolutely amazing really funny and jolly exactly how a tour guide should be. However found the prices quite extortionate for what the tour actually was - free samples were limited to one per person fair enough theres got to be enough to get round everyone but when you pay £50 for 3 people to enter you’d think there would be a bit more… Expected to actually make chocolate, instead was given a dollop of white chocolate, a stick and 3 choices of decorative toppings. The truffles at the end were nice for myself but as the filling was passionfruit alot of the tourists turned their nose up at them, wouldve probably worked out better as caramel truffles or regular milk chocolate. Prices are too high for what you get. Wouldnt return again but did enjoy it for the most part.
N. H.
Had a fantastic time on the chocolate story tour, the tour guide Gina was friendly and welcoming and very informative, I enjoyed learning all about chocolate and thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone 🙂
V.
Fantastic experience. Checked online to see about bookings for the same afternoon (on a Saturday) and could see availability, 3 of us went in and got given a slot in half an hours time so went off and came back. Really great to hear about the history, the way it’s presented was great and plenty of chocolate to try as you go around. You get to make your own chocolate lolly. Have already recommended to many friends/colleagues.
P. M.
Visited as part of York Residents weekend and really enjoyed my walk round. I've never visited, even though I live in York and it has been here for years! Really interesting learning about the history of our chocolate city! Would visit again in a few years, and I'm sure the exhibition inside will change.
s.
I pre-booked the chocolate story and I recommend pre booking to avoid disappointment. We had a tour of the chocolate tour learning all things chocolate. We tasted choclate along the way which we were given. We then made choclate lolly and truffles which was great I would recommend this place.
K. C.
Great attraction for young and old alike, delicious chocolate! We really enjoyed learning about the history of chocolate and making our own treats. I especially enjoyed the shards of chocolate we tried and would of loved to have bought some but they didn’t seem to sell it in the shop.
N. H.
Did the chocolate story tour which was very informative and engaging - got to try various chocolates as well as try our hand at making chocolate lollipops and truffles! Delicious 😋
C. N.
Really enjoyed the experience . Our guide , Oscar , made it very interesting and got the kids involved , well done . Book in advance during the holidays .
K. B.
Brilliant story of Yorks chocolate makers. Worth the money and you even get to make your own chocolate lolly. So much I never knew about chocolate....bur do now. Very informative. Takes about 1 - 1.5 hrs to do and lots of chocolate to buy in the shop at the end too.
P. C. T.
The shop itself is nothing spectacular, average. What is cool tho is the chocolate story tour. Is very well done and you can know a lot more about the history of chocolate in York and even make your own chocolate lollipop.
The price for us was 5 pounds each because of the anniversary of the shop, otherwise it would be double I think, which is a arguable expensive.
N. C.
I came here with a friend while we were visiting York. The tour was really interesting and I'd definitely recommend it as something to do with the family as there were several kids on the tour with us who were more than happy to pay attention when rewarded with little titbits of chocolate. Our tour guide Meg was really good and obviously knows her stuff. If you don't have time for the tour then it's still worth popping into the shop which is basically a shrine to chocolate with lots of top-end brands available in various flavours many of which I've never seen elsewhere.
D. R.
Behold the "sweet" side of York - lovely store / museum focused on the chocolate history. If you have time take the tour and be sure to visit the store downstairs for a sweet memory/ moment. The white chocolate drink is delicious and you won't regret it. If you're not in hurry - sit down and enjoy the aroma and flair of this place.
S. M.
This was a great hour or so tour. We learnt something, and they don't gloss over the history of chocolate either which is good.
C. T.
Had a wonderful time here with family we all really enjoyed the tour the talks and the demonstrations were very informative our five year old loved it especially the lollipop making . Highly recommended
C. S.
Honestly wasn't sure what to expect when my girlfriend said she wanted to go through a tour in York's Chocolate Story, something I didn't even know existed when researching things to do in York, but I'm glad she mentioned it! It's a great experience.
We had a great guide called Serena, and she took us through the rich history of chocolate in York, which I never even knew existed.
If the constant samples of chocolate weren't great enough throughout the tour, they have an impressive shop/café at the end which has a huge selection of chocolatey goodness to choose from!
C. Y.
Tweaked tour under social distance measures. They have made a genuine effort to engage you and make it fun. Super friendly staff. York’s chocolate is quite sweet though, not necessarily my cup of tea
B. L.
Absolutely fantastic experience, I recommend this to Adults and the way the children were involved in their making of chocolate.
J. S.
Really well done. Informative and fun. Our tour guide Josh was very fun!
S. M.
A place really worth visiting specially if someone has even a little bit of interest or love for chocolate. It gives a wonderful opportunity to know the story of how chocolate have evolved over the years and the people who made it happen. The best part is the opportunity to taste so many versions of chocolate.
D.
Really enjoyed the guided tour and learning a little history behind York's chocolate story.
If you are a lover of chocolate this is a must, plenty of chances to try the products and all around enjoyable experience and knowledgeable staff making it a fun day out.
K.
A fantastic experience for learning all about the history of chocolate. Our guide, Lee seemed to know everything there is to know about chocolate! He questioned our favourite chocolate bars and reeled off facts for them whilst we waited, and didn't stop throughout the whole experience. The hands-on portion is a nice end to a great tour, culminating in the most mouth-watering gift shop I've ever been in!
Q. M.
So we took our 2 grandsons on their first visit to the famous chocolate story in York. Me and my wife have been twice before with family so well versed in what's there. Each time we go we learn a little more about the famous York families who put chocolate on the UK map. We had hot chocolate from the cafe prior to going on the tour, delicious! Great tour lasts around 1 hour. It's interactive and you get to creat your own chocolate bar as well as sample various chocolate treats. The tour guides and staff are friendly, enthusiastic and informative We shall be back I'm sure. Thanks to all there for a great time

Definitely would recommend a visit if you're in york. Right next to the shambles you can't miss it. Very Informative and not too hard for the kids to follow along. Josh our tour guide was lovely and funny. The chocolate is also amazing and if you go you'll find out why it tastes better.
L. B.
It was very informative but still fun at the same time. We tried all sorts of different types of chocolate ‘most’ of the chocolate was nice but some... not so nice! We booked the tickets in the morning for a tour in the afternoon as it was half term and very busy to avoid disappointment. This turned out to be a great move as there were long queues when we returned so we just bypassed the queues and went straight.
S. M.
Matthew who took the money for tickets was helpful and delightful.
Our tour guide was nice and accommodating. A bit tight for Covid times.
Making the chocolates was fun and watching the bonbons get made was interesting.
Worth the money.
Disappointed that the store didn’t sell the historic candies taught to us in the museum.
C. B.
York’s Chocolate Story was brilliant for the family, especially myself as I am both Gluten and Lactose intolerant. I went into the chocolate story never expecting to receive anything I could eat however they ensured I was both able to take part and able to enjoy the activities they do from making lollipops to truffle dusting.
They provided gluten and dairy free treats for me to take home or enjoy there especially as a replacement for any chocolates I couldn’t eat. I would definitely recommend to anyone who does have any of the same intolerances or even both to partake.
D. W.
So fun! Lots of history, lots of samples when you take the tour, and you even get to make your own treats! Fun for the family. Give yourself about an hour. Worth it!
C. M.
Absolutely amazing! Louis was our guide and was absolutely amazing! Great value for money and the whole tour was extremely fun and informative! Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting York!
E. C.
Very informative and the guide made it alot of fun. It was good with interaction aswell. Even got to make some chocolate lollies aswell. Great place to visit indeed.

Interesting facts about history of chocolate making. Still can't believe how many kit kats are made in a day!
Our 3 boys enjoyed the tour and making the lolly pop. They would have enjoyed sampling or making other treats too. Felt there could have been a few more opportunities for them.
A little pricey for family of 5.
Our tour guide loveky and responded to the boys questions.
A. B.
Josh was our tour guide.
Very good tour, interesting history, and aided our wheelchair using family member, no hassle caused as I forgot to mention when booking.
Lots of free samples of chocolate to!
A. M.
Great tour. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Didn't realise York has such a connection to the history of chocolate. The samples were very nice too. Understanding the whole process of chocolate making is cool.
Plus you get to make your own chocolate lolly. 👍
S. Y.
Great fun for kids and adults. Learned lots about the history of chocolate and had fun making and tasting. Our guide was brilliant with kids and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
K.
Fun, informative tour from our handsome host Louis today. Only wish the experience was longer with more samples 😜
P. H.
Really great visit, and tour guide who was informative, knowledgeable and engaging. Was sadly left wanting more but don't know what that should look like. Did feel it was slightly overpriced but still enjoyable.
G. D.
Mine and my wifes 2nd visit, we took our eldest daughter who now lives and studies in York but had never been. She loved it as we both did again. Robbie the guide was very knowledgeable, very funny and included everyone in the experience.
The shop afterwards is great (cost me a fortune 😁) but worth every penny.
Highly recommend the caramel hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows.
Great experience and will visit again when back in York, well done 👏
P. p.
It's a very good tour. Ellie was very friendly and informative. The tour itself is very interactive and I would suggest the truffle rolling part of the tour. Well worth it and would suggest to anyone.
C. E.
A great day out for the family. This visit did not disappoint. A fantastic experience. Staff are very friendly and helpful. My 18month old loved it especially making her own lollypop.
K. P.
Amazing experience really enjoyed learning about the history of chocolate in York. Was fun to make some chocolate and Scarlet the your guide was very enthusiastic which made the tour more enjoyable.
J.
This is a great tour for familes.
Our guide, Lee, was friendly and full of chocolate knowledge.
Lots of little chocolaty tasters on the way round and the opportunity to make and taste chocolate.
Hot chocolate in the café is also a must.
C. C.
Wonderful place to know about chocolate. The staff was very kind. You should visit this atraction in York. My important suggestion to improve is to take careful care with restroom cleaning. It would be wonderful if restrooms were separated for males and females.
R. R.
Realy enjoyed our visit, scarlet our tour guide was very informative . Would recomend
N. S.
Great fun.. learn the history of chocolate in the UK in the actual city of chocolate.. Loads of tasters and you get to make your own lollipop! Staff were brilliant and very informative!
F. T. (.
Fantastic trip, Rosa was very funny, friendly and made the tour very enjoyable xx my kids loved it especially the lolly making x
S. W.
Came on a school trip, was very good, informative and with the right amount of chocolate! Would recommend, really interesting history of the company
S. M.
Really great interactive experience with plenty of samples and freebies. Would highly recommend booking the truffle rolling guided tour.
H. L.
Just had a fabulous tour hosted by Oscar, really made things very interesting. Great for all chocolate lovers, young or old.
U. N. (. B.
History of chocolate making in York and demonstration of how beans become a bar of chocolate We made our own lollies out of white chocolate. A good visit for children of any age. We thought however it was rather over-priced hence only 4 stars.
M. S.
We had a great time visiting, our guide Gina was very helpful. We especially enjoyed the chocolate tasting and making our own lollipops 😀😀
d. s.
We all had a fantastic time all kids would love this lots of free chocolates our guide was really funny polite and made it very pleasurable experience.
K. R.
The tour guides and the chocolatiers are funny as heck! Great to taste lots of chocolates and learn the history of chocolate in the city. The exhibitions inside are so fun. You have to go here if you visit York!
S. L.
If you are a chocolate lover, this is a great place to go. You get to taste, make and learn about the history of the chocolitiers in and around York.
D. W.
You cannot miss this museum it is awesome and Scarlett was an amazing tour guide and was very knowledgeable I highly recommend visiting this place if you love chocolate
S. N.
Really enjoyable and interesting tour on the history of chocolate in York. Our tour guide Louie was friendly, enthusiastic and funny.
M. H.
The lovely smell of different chocolate is wonderful. Didn't go on tour. Tea and cakes are good.
p. m.
Fascinating story, told by a very knowledgeable Ellie. All questions answered, some awkward as well. Will definitely visit again when in the area.
J. C.
Not a bad tour, quite lengthy and very informative. Chocolate is very good and the ‘take home’ is fairly generous.
L. A.
This was one of the best things we've done this trip. Such an enjoyable tour and, hey, chocolate!
C. H.
Loved this experience, the whole history of chocolate in York; make your own chocolate lolly and very good and funny guide.
M. M.
Good attraction with tasters and a Choco lolly that you make to your own specifications at the end of it. Enjoyed it very much.
K. B.
Have been here a few times as well as at Easter and Christmas. My children and I throughly enjoyed our time. The events at Easter and Christmas were really good!
A. S.
Great fun and was able to even pull a few surprises on me too just plan which group you go in as you do have to share in parts
C. H.
A really great, fun interactive tour my 2 children aged 7 and 10 loved it x
M. W.
Such a great experience. I loved every part of it - A must do if your in York for the day!
G. A.
Superb tour hosted by a very capable Guide called Rob. Very knowledgeable and experienced in the history of chocolate. Brilliant interaction by ourselves where we made our own milk chocolate lolly. Lots of free chocolate tasting along the way. Highly recommended. Cost for adult £ 13.95, senior member £ 10.95.
E. D.
Really accessible and highly enjoyed my experience. Our tour guide Ellie was fantastic
K. A.
Interesting background to the history of chocolate production in York by excellent staff who also distributed various chocolate samples. There is seating available as you go round the various rooms. After the tour you get to make your own chocolate lolly and watch a chocolate maker in action. This will be the freshest chocolate you've ever had and tastes great. The chocolate sold in the shop below is very expensive.
M. R.
Good insight on how chocolate was made and the tour guide was informative and had good charismatic in his role.
E. A.
A fun and worthwhile experience!
The first review I saw was unfortunately negative but I'm now glad it didn't put me off.
The full tour lasted a bit over an hour and was made up of a number of different sections. You start with an introduction and goodies (pictured) from the tour guide, watch a presentation about the origins of chocolate and move on to a talk on the history of chocolate in york. Then there's an interactive (great for kids) exhibit on how chocolate is made and a little museum full of more York chocolate history. Finally you get to make your own chocolate lollypop and see a live demonstration from the chocolatier (including some delicious free samples!). WOW! There is a lot packed into the experience so it is definitely worth a visit.
Many thanks to the tour guide and other staff!
C. C.
Great little museum with a tour that lasted over an hour.
The staff inside were very friendly and enthusiastic about chocolate - they really helped make the tour interesting and fun.
The tour covered the history of chocolate, different companies around York, chocolate production, a demonstration section and a bit where you make your own chocolate lolly.
Overall a very good experience that I would recommend.
L. P.
Such a great tour! Louis was entertaining and very informative. I was expecting the facts to be boring but they really weren’t, they were interesting and fun. The samples were great and it was lovely that we got to be hands on and make our own too. I’d definitely recommend to anyone to come here. The only thing I’d do differently is have smaller groups
N. C.
Interesting tour but wish it were longer. Lots of chocolate snacks. very interactive and would be great for kids. included decorating chocolate too.
M.
This place was truly a great interactive experience , nice setting and kid friendly def recommend .
L. H.
The tour was really good. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. However the shop wasn't great. We expected to be able to buy chocolate bars that we know as well as chocolate made in other places.
T. L.
Thought of trying this out having never been in. The experience is excellent and is split into a historical guided tour and an interactive virtual factory tour. Matthew, our guide, was excellent with knowledge and delivery. You also get plenty of chocolate samples with your own souvenir chocolate lolly at the end.
Definitely a must visit in York.
A. B.
Great experience, staff very informative and friendly. Got to make our own white chocolate lollies and try some fresh made chocolates.
C. W.
We had a really good time here. It was very informative and fun.
U. T.
Very nice short tour to the history of chocolate and you will actually learn to make your own chocolate.
B. F.
Was underwhelmed at the cafe after reading such great reviews. Got the mint flavored dark hot chocolate, but there was so much mint in it, it was hard to drink. The brownie was dry and nothing to write home about. The bright spot was that there were eqch flavour of chocolate chips at the till to sample before ordering. Next time I would get the plain hot chocolate without an added flavour and skip the brownie altogether.
M. V.
Interactive and informative tour with the most interesting and funny tour guide! Highly recommend
J. F.
Took the family on the tour. It was fun and interactive for the kids. Made our own chocolate which the kids enjoyed. Lovely place.
D. S.
Very nice tour. It took around an hour, booked in advance. We were shown some videos, a number of stalls with interesting facts and the tour was led by one of the guides.
Also, we got some chocolate samples, saw how candies are made and decorated our own chocolate lollipops.
Overall, well worth the time if you have seen all attractions of the city. If it's your first time, it is not a must-see place, as it barely contributes to the history.
L. M.
This is a fun way to spend a couple of hours (2 at most). Katie (tour guide) was knowledgeable and fun. Definitely one for all the family and yes you get free chocolate!
M. L.
Their hot chocolate is so good!
M. W.
Fantastic tour very interesting and fun with hands on experience. Josh our tour guide was brilliant, very engaging and informative 👍🏻
K. M.
We had such a lovely time today on our chocolate tour! (14:30 bunch) our guide was great! Definitely had a passion for what he did, great jokes and a fun learning experience.
Loved the goodies you got, always a bonus when you get given delicious chocolate.
Great experience for the family, as a couple or going solo!
M. M.
Very interesting place lots to learn and see. Great tourist attraction, saying that there is so much to see and do in york
L. N.
A fab afternoon with our wonderful guide Matty. Interactive for the children and lots of wonderful chocolates to choose from at the end. I can definitely recommend the hot chocolate.
L. C.
IT WAS AWESOME YOU GET TO TRY COCOA NIBS AND CHILLI COCO DRINKS FROM THE AZTEC TIMES AND MAKE YOUR OWN CHOCOLATE 10/10 RECOMMEND FOR ALL AGES
A. D.
Nice tasting chocolate not bad at all, tour guide tells you all about the story of chocolates.
S. S.
Lots of chocolate to eat on the way round the tour. Very enjoyable.
P. S.
What a great little tour, great guide. Tour lasted 1hr 15 mins, plenty of little tasters and make your own lolly. And a not very big shop which I think is a plus.
M. C.
Very interesting. Tour guide spoke very professionally and clearly.
P. D.
Interesting to learn about the history of chocolate plenty of free samples along the tour too. Fun way to kill an hour
J. C.
Great experience and interactive. Always a plus getting treats on the way around.
D. R.
The closest thing to Wonka's in the UK. got to enjoy some lovely samples throughout, with very warm and engaging staff.
N. H.
Fantastic! Kids under 5 free. When you pay £12 per adult you wonder if you’ve just been ripped off but it’s completely worth it. Lots of free samples, chocolate making and history lessons!
c.
Good Experience. Could do with more free chocolate, or a longer tour. As it was very expensive for what you get.
S. S.
Amazing experience. Very informative tour by Ellie. Lots of samples. Definitely recommend!
S. C.
Was very interesting. Got to see how the brand evolved. Also enjoyed making a chocolate lollipop and see a few other demonstrations. Worth a visit, but you need to book in advance.
d. k.
a must experience worth doing it great fun & you eat chocolate yaa win win..🥰
S. D.
Absolutely wonderful day out. I would absolutly recommed this to anyone who enjoys chocolate. Gift shop a bit pricey but otherwise a very good tour!
A. K.
One can take the tour of entire chocolate processing or you may skip the tour & but chocolates from amazing options they have.
Sea Salt is my favourite..
**Carry your bag for your buy from them, they don’t give bags or paper bags, else you may have to purchase them.
A. A.
The origin of kit kat.... Really interesting and loves the chocholate gifts👍
A. S.
Really good attraction had a great visit and got to make our own chocolate lolly
J. J.
Great experience. Lee was a fantastic guide. Gave us loads of information. Really enjoyed making chocolate lollies and truffles. Would definitely go again.
F. S.
Great tour with interesting guides, lots of free chocolate on the way round too!
S. C.
Brilliant tour, just the right length and level of detail for kids. helpful and friendly staff, and chocolate making with Santa was great fun. Can't wait to come back!
M.
Tour guide was brilliant. Also, very knowledgeable when asked questions outside of the tour script. Really enjoyed making truffles and decorating the chocolate lolly. Some of the story telling rooms are very well put together, particularly the talking historic characters. Would visit again.
N. M.
A really well delivered tour. The only fault would be that it was over too quickly. Our group were all adults but I guess it has to be tailored for all ages. The young lady who delivered the presentation was excellent.
p. j.
Too much dark chocolate on the tour and white chocolate no milk chocolate
N. T.
Fantastic, really enjoyed our visit. Chocolate tasting was great. 👍
D. W.
Worth a visit if you're interested in the history of chocolate. The tour takes around a hour, covering the history of chocolate in York, together with a demonstration on how to make your own chocolate and you come away with your own choc lolly!. The shop is open to all.
N. L.
Really fun and immersive, my 4 year old love making truffles!
R. S.
All the family enjoyed this, from age 3 to 63. We would go back when we're in York to let our toddler experience it again in the future. Tickets were a reasonable price for the experience.
I did notice that senior and student tickets were the exact same price as adults - I felt there should have at least been a small discount for those tickets.
Our tour guide was lovely and really knowledgeable about the history of chocolate in general, not just in York.
G. H.
Tour guide was very good, funny and witty. Thoroughly enjoyed it
R. F.
The tour is great and very engaging. Content is reasonable and well choreographed. Chocolates in the shop are unfortunately very overpriced. For comparison truffles in Harrods London are the same price as theirs... Not same quality. They should consider their stance on charging extra for more pieces in a box than separately... That makes no sense especially at £1 per piece!
S. K.
Loved this tour of the chocolate story. Really interesting story and told in a very entertaining way. Interactive section and samples are given out too. I would highly recommend this tour if you are visiting York. Pre-book tickets and a time slot for your tour.
D. C.
Really enjoyed this with my son. Had to explain it wasn't about Charlie & the chocolate factory several times before entering as its not cheap... but the tour was an hr and well worth it. It's very interactive with some clever screen character presentations executed well by our tour guide. Near the end you get to make a chocolate lolly and watch some more chocolates being made which you walk away with at the end. Recommend.
W. B.
Brilliant, what's not to like, the guide and experience were great
B. A.
I enjoyed this tour a lot.
You learn about York's history through chocolate. Throughout the tour, you'll learn interesting facts about chocolate making and it will be presented in a creative and entertaining manner.
The tour guide made this an enjoyable experience, taking us around and showing us where things were. Throughout the session, he kept us entertained with his knowledge of chocolate history in York, a presentation that was fun, funny, and charming.
There is also a chocolate-making demonstration, and you can make your own chocolate lollipops, so you get some free chocolate. I really enjoyed it. You can sample some of the chocolates. It was fascinating to watch the chocolatiers mold some chocolates. They were also very knowledgeable when answering questions. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable in general. If you love chocolate and are ever in York, I highly recommend it.
Our tour lasted just long enough for families to enjoy. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend you visit, but pre-book your tickets.
P. J.
Brilliant tour. We found it perfectly balanced with enough interesting information to keep both adults and children engaged. The talking confectioners interacting with Theo the guide were very entertaining! We went on to find out it was under Mary Ann’s Cravens shop that the Viking ruins were found…
Lasting just over an hour was about right for children and having them (and the adults) answer questions and interact throughout really helped. Great guide (Theo) and chocolatier (Maisie) with lots of enthusiasm.
Our only gripe was being given white chocolate for the lolly making as we really don’t like it, but it hardly mattered, we got plenty chocolate samples and it was about the story for us!
I. P.
They have some very nice technical installations and the guides were good. The chocolate making session was nice, if brief, with the choclatier on good form! I would say it's possibly overpriced for the amount you get to see/do though. Much better value from other attractions in York.
H. G.
Fab experience, and staff went above and beyond to sort me dairy free chocolate for the truffle making session. Strongly recommend adding that option to a tour, was really good fun. Tour itself was fascinating, and our guide Pedro was super knowledgeable and funny. Shout out to Matty too for the terrible jokes when we arrived, even if I was the only one laughing!
M. S.
well worth a visit. You take a tour around the history of York's involvement with chocolate. Suitable for all ages. They feed you plenty of samples and you even get to make a chocolate lolly towards the end.
R. S.
Enjoyed the truffle making experience was a nice tour with a lovely and knowledgeable guide.
A. K.
We had a nightmare getting to the building, traffic into York is a nightmare. This meant we were late to arrive, so had to join the tour half way around. So top tip - do later in day where you're safely in York a few hours before. The girl doing the tour seemed knowledgeable and others in tour were enjoying themselves, we got the jist but where we really enjoyed was the chocolate room - which was lots of fun and the kids enjoyed massively.
D. A.
Guided tour included free chocolates and make your own chocolate lolly. A number of interactive displays helped explain the history of chocolate making in York and the start to finish process. An excellent place for the young to visit.
S. D.
Very interesting tour. Greating on arrival was a bit frosty, with the lady being a little rude, which didn't give a good first impression.
The gentleman doing the actual tour was excellent, with lots of interesting information about the evolution of chocolate. Could have done with a few more chocolate samples!
M. N.
Brilliant! Loved it! Really educational, beautifuly presented, our guide was brilliant! I
J. N.
Very enjoyable, guide was very enthusiastic and your was very informative. Nice chocolate as well
K. M.
It was a fun experience with Louie the guide. We definitely enjoyed the whole experience. All the team members very friendly{even when reached the show 10 minutes late} , you should book truffle making experience{ I am glad I did, otherwise it would have very disappointing when other families were enjoying).
A. W.
Lot of information about how the chocolate was made . Nice tour guide called Josh.
V. H.
Fabulous time here the young lady who gave our tour was brilliant and really engaging. All the staff were fantastic and very professional. The covid restrictions were enforced in a friendly manner and there was nothing I would change about the experience. Wholly recommend spending some time here if you can.
T. C.
Interesting and informative but strangely not for small children, apart from the free samples!
R. S. J.
Really fun and informative tour. Our tour guide Robbie was great and had a good sense of humour.
C.
Fantastic history of Yorkshire chocolate, really engaging host and even a chance to make our own. Great value for money!
M. B.
I visited earlier this week and had a great time (perks of there just being two of us on the tour meant a few extra treats!). We had an excellent guide and the chocolate was delicious.
H. W.
Only went to the shop and café but we will come back next year to do the chocolate tour. A must when visiting York
L. W.
Was not worth the money. Our tour guide was very good, informative and clearly had a passion for what he does as a chocolatier, but that was about as interesting as it got. Too many in group and not sure what we paid £15pp for.
R. M.
We choose the truffle making option and hence went at the end of the day, benefitting from far less people. The tour guide was great and the short history and tour really informative. The lolly and truffle making, was well managed and fun and the demo at the end also added interest. Overall it's quite expensive, but we all enjoyed ourselves and would recommend.
C. R.
Amazing place to learn about chocolate! Exceptional staff and experience
A. A.
Very informative experience, even with covid restrictions we had a great time. Making your own chocolate lollies was a fantastic addition. The tour guide was very informative and enthusiastic, she really enhanced experience. And of course the chocolate was delicious. Would recommend anyone visiting York to give it ago!
M. E.
This tour was great fun. Our guide, Robbie, was really friendly and entertaining and the tour was interesting and engaging. Rolling truffles and making lollies was also brilliant!
L. E.
Very impressed with the Chocolate Story after our visit this afternoon. Unfortunately we got stuck in ridiculous traffic on our way to York and ended up arriving 25 minutes late to the tour we had booked. Matty welcomed us and was extremely helpful and polite and immediately offered us a place on the next tour which we were really grateful for!
Lee was our tour guide and was very friendly and gave a super interesting tour full of cool facts. He was enthusiastic and made effort to remember everyone's individual answers to his questions which was nice. I was impressed at all the chocolate samples we got too.
We really enjoyed our experience this afternoon and are appreciative of how accomodating York's Chocolate Story was despite us missing our booked tour. We will definitely return in the future and recommend this to everyone.
A. H.
Fun yet informative tour! I learned a lot about York's history with chocolate, I knew some things but still found out something new. It was very fun with a section where we decorated our own chocolate lollipop. There was also plenty of free goodies, which were very much appreciated!
R. F. L. S.
The guide was brilliant! He was truly passionate about what he does and was full of information and facts. The interaction was great, it was engaging and fun! Highly recommend! Only downside was the shop- super super expensive!!
E. B.
Alex was a great host and very knowledgeable and it was a fun experience. I really enjoyed making the lollipops and it would have been great to play around with the chocolate more ourselves so that it was more interactive, I’d be willing to pay a bit more for that. Overall still great though!
C. P.
The tour was great and much more immersive than I'd expected. I'm vegan and was assured on booking and on arrival that it would be no problem. I was given a vegan bag of samples, and a vegan chocolate at the chocolaiter, but was unable to make a vegan chocolate lolly which was a bit disappointing. The museum was much better than I expected and a great way to spend the afternoon.
t. g.
Only looked in never bought anything but nice staff eager to help us.
T. D.
Had a really lovely time, informative and fun. Nick was an absolutely fantastic guide with a great sense of humour. Chocolate tasted lovely, just wish there was more - would have at least liked a kit kat.
T. M.
Me and my boyfriend visited yesterday and it was fantastic. Our tour guide Joe was amazing. He was so friendly and bubbly and made everything very excited. The tour itself is really good fun too. And I was indeed glad that even durong covid we still got free samples. Would recommend if in York. Only takes about an hour so its not too much time out of your day, but definitely book before.
A. S.
Amazing tour. The exhibits were brilliant, especially the Rowntree's history section, and the guide was fantastic. Thanks, Pedro! Between the various sample packs and lollies, we came out with plenty of chocolate before we even got to the gift shop. The price for the tour is definitely fair for that and the quality of the tour itself. An hour very well spent.
P. T.
Lovely family place with a great tour and information about the history of chocolate in York with treats to eat as you go.
C. B.
This was a really nice experience the guide was excellent and there were many interesting facts about chocolate production in York and all the famous chocolate bars made there.
C. R. D.
The staff is just amazing. They made the tour so fun and interesting. You truly learn a lot about the history of chocolate making. You also get to try many different types of chocolate and you learn how to taste it properly. They let you make your own chocolate lolly and they give you free handmade chocolate confections -easily £10 worth of it.
J. P.
Really fun, laid back & interesting tour of the history of chocolate in York. Katie was our guide today, she was excellent throughout!
Z. T.
Brilliant! Super friendly staff members in the shop/ at check in. Really good tour with a very knowledgeable/ informative guide (sorry, we forgot your name - booked on the 11:30 tour on 21/09/21) Nice little sample back to go around the tour with, witht the tour guide referencing different samples.
We were surprised we were able to decorate our own chocolate, which was a very nice touch. The chocolates we were given at the end of the tour were super tasty (milk & passion fruit I think)
Definitely worth a visit. Thankyou YCS!
(Only downside: The only bags available to buy for our purchases were upwards of £3... admittedly we should have brought a bag with us, but annoying a 10 or 20p bag wasn't available..)
C. B.
I really enjoyed my time here, definitely interesting and also fun. Plus you get the chance to decorate your own chocolate truffles
A. F.
Dont be afraid to go if you have allergies they are willing to accommodate and advise what you can eat every step of the way. Guided by a choclatier who works there and gives you the history of chocolate and York.
L. J.
I really loved this 1 hour long experience. Our chocolate guide Theo was fab, super informative, interesting, and professional. You get a lot of chocolate included in the admission price. Goes into the history of both Terry's and Rowntree in York, with videos, interactive exhibit.
D. D.
Excellent tour and thank you for making our children feel so welcome. The tour guide Robbie was excellent, he should get a pay rise.
M.
Had so much fun!! Left with a gift bag and the chocolate tasted amazing :)
The tour is really well organised and the people who showed us around were amazing! This definitely exceed my expectations and I would recommend going on a tour if you are around.
R. S.
It's a good experience, but honestly it isn't much value for money considering we paid over £70 for a family of 4. I would rate Cadbury world much better experience than this and value for money.
g. s.
Coffee was lovely, but not happy with paper cups when we were sitting in also you used to get a free chocolate on the side of saucer but hey how times have changed.
J.
Excellent, plenty to do and see, would definitely visit again
I.
Great way to learn the history of chocolate in York and feel hungry
while seeing it made. Excellent tour, staff very professional. Lots of places to rest if you are disabled and use of lifts if you need one. Thank you
A. K.
Great chocolate adventure. Interactive and good for children. Little to short visit for this price, bht still worth it.
k. d.
A good experience to see and know how chocolate is made but doesn’t feel it has that much to see for that value
B. R.
Enjoyed the tour - was interesting to learn about the history of chocolate in York. Had no idea that the original Rowntrees was so close! Tour guide was very knowledgeable and the tour itself was a mix of traditional with some higher tech features thrown in. Probably not as interactive as it usually is given COVID but that can't be helped. It is quite expensive for what you get though...
s. m.
Amazing experience. The young woman doin gbthe tour was exceptional
A. R.
A short and sweet 😜 tour, took an hour and was an enjoyable experience.
I thought it was ran by Roundtree / Terry’s but it is actually independent.
My main disappointment is the very small amount of chocolate you get on the tour, although adult tickets are only £15.
Best part was making your own chocolate lollipop.
T. S.
Matt or Josh, his alter ego, was a fantastic tour guide. Informative and funny with it. Well worth a visit, and good value, but you can't resist buying more chocolate on the way out as the smell of fresh chocolate is fabulous 😋
C. B.
Kind of interesting. Mostly you're just swept through on the tour schedule, make a chocolate thing and that's it. Not much chocolate given out. It was fine as a tourist experience. I remember Cadbury's in Bourneville being better, but I was about 10 then, so it's quite possible it was very similar...
M. M.
Great place to unwind and learn a little about the history of chocolateand chocolate making in York... our guide Lee (?) is very well informed and answered all our questions getting our group to participate more...
Fun activity making your own lolly and watching the expert make a ganache... lots of chocolate tasting an even an old way of Pre-Columbus chocolate drink... we liked it but most people would stay away from it..(has no milk and chili spice is added)... highly recommended place to visit... Cheers
S. W.
The chocolate experience is just pouring chocolate, nice chocolate, but nothing new to try or information or games or music
K. D.
I had a fantastic time. The tour guide Katie was very funny and the guy who made the chocolates was very enthusiastic. I learned a lot.
I. K.
Excellent attraction - good couple of hours spent, with interesting and well maintained tour.
S. H.
Great insight to the workings of the chocolate History
Thanks to our Guide Lee
S. H. C.
Great place.
Great City ...
Great history ...
The Minster nearby
What more could you ask for?
Chocolate perhaps!
K. B.
Great staff and interesting tour. The "cafe'" as signposted, was a big let down. Hoping for a snack or lunch after our tour we entered the "cafe" only to find a drinks machine behind the shop counter! Disappointing!
J. S.
I think I've reviewed YCS before, but, I have to say, when visiting York, this is a must. I recommend you take in the tour of their museum, telling the story of chocolate making in York, when done, browse their shop, where you can buy home made truffle chocolates, plus many selections of pre-wrapped items & grab a hot chocolate while you're there.
L. B.
Clean!friendly and helpful staff. Covid measures in place.
D. K.
It seems very expensive (and is for a family) but cannot fault the experience and it kept us dry and warm for an hour and a bit! Very informative and great hands on experience.
M. A.
Very interesting and josh, our tour gide, was amazing
J. A.
Excellent experience and a fun way to spend a couple of hours.
P. W.
Such a knowledgeable guide and interesting tour. All felt a bit rushed hence the 4 rather than 5 star rating.
R. T.
A wonderful interactive look into York's major role in the development in not only York but the UK.
K. P.
Went there on Wednesday.
Last tour starts around 2-3 if I can remember correctly, a bit sad if you come late. So go early if you want to make it! However, you can still visit the chocolate store until the store closes so until around 3-4. The shop has lots of different chocolate products, you will surely find something that you'll like or find interesting there.
a. s.
We had plenty of chocolate for sample the tour guide out standing
p. M.
Great tour. Excent guide (Louie)... Very patient and a great sense of humour. Had a great time. Lasts rough 1 hr 15 mins and the chocolate is superb! Very informative and tasty! Kids and adults alike will love it.
Ps the prices are great.
J. W.
We really enjoyed our trip here and would highly recommend 😀 you can only book your ticket on line as it's really busy.
S. P.
Robbie was a great host. The tour has a good mix of interactive elements, history, personal stories and facts about the chocolate-making process. We learned a lot and enjoyed the samples 😊 they have made adjustments for covid very well and they don't take away from the tour
b. f.
Brilliant way to spend an hour. Our guide was a really nice guy
D. H.
I did the tour here, Robin was a great host, very funny and full of life. I enjoyed getting hands on with the chocolate and thought this to one of the best things to do it York, 100% recommend this for anyone who like chocolate!
K. M.
Very good experience. The chocolate's tour is nice and sweet. One hour discovering the magic world of chocolate 😄
M. T.
Great place to find out the history of chocolate production in york, especially fun if you are a chocoholic - you get to be hands on and see forst hand experience of the processes of making chocolates etc.
Fun for all the family.
S. H.
The tour is BRILLIANT. Only marred by the couple who brought a very small baby in with them and refused the wonderful tour guide's offer of a room to take the infant into when it cried. The tour is not suitable for babies or toddlers and the ticket price is not cheap, of course.
E. D.
Me and my boyfriend visited to do the Christmas family workshop which was so fun! The workshop was lead by Sam who was amazing and really informative about all the chocolate and different creations we would be making and really fun. We were first checked in and asked what hot chocolate we wanted which was included in our ticket, there was lots of flavours, syrups and toppings to choose from which was lovley. Then we went through into the end of the tour section which was all closed and cleaned from the daytime ready for our evening workshop. I'd definitely recommend doing a workshop at York's Chocolate Story and I'd love to visit again and do the tour. Everyone was really friendly and the shop had some really cool things to buy also.
A. L.
Really great tour that teaches us the funding of the modern chocolate industry. Our guide was really nice. The fact that you can make your own chocolate is simply awesome! ... And let's not talk about those samples ;) I totally recommend it !!
L. O.
Very fun history tour and chocolate making. We learned all about the early chocolate manufacturers and how chocolate is actually made. Louis (who asked to be mentioned by name) was very enthusiastic and gave the whole experience a nice feel.
J. R.
Took my Grandaughter here fir a chocolate treat.
Very interesting and informative tour.
Would definitely go back again.
D. A.
Had a fantastic tour. Even with covid restrictions, we were able to get a highly informative and energetic experience. Our guide (cant remember his name) was full of (chocolate) beans and had great enthusiasm for his work. He got excited when we asked questions and explained everything clearly. The choclateers showing us how they make chocolate were lively and passion for their work showed through.
The exhibition was as interactive as they could make it, and even dairy free people were catered for. We were still able to take away some tasty treats, including making our own white chocolate lollipop. I would highly reccomend a visit here.
S. T.
Pretty interesting stuff! Guide was knowledgeable, friendly and clearly excited about chocolate. Not the longest of tours, but enjoyed it all the same
Quite expensive at £14, though. There are samples included, but not that many. (Compare this with the scale of the Jorvik Viking Centre at £12.)
Still, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! But given the length and cost, can't really give 5*s; definitely worth 4*s though!
A. M.
Been here a few times, the children loved learning about where chocolate came from. The best bit was making something they got to eat at the end. The people that talk you through are very professional. Loved the coffee shop an souvenir shop. the hot chocolate in the coffee shop is amazing. Would definitely recommend giving this place a visit if your in york.
E. R.
The best chocolate tour that I have ever done (and I have done a few already). It is very interactive and the tour guide makes it very interesting. Each part of the history that he told us came with something to taste and have an idea of what he was talking about. The best part for me was close to the end, where we could produce our own chocolate lollipop and then see someone producing chocolate truffles (taste as well). I highly recommend. It worth the price paid.
C. W.
Very informative tour for all ages. And lots of chocolate giveaways. The chocolate industry is so important to the history of York, it would be a shame to miss this tour on any trip to the city!
D. L.
Cool tour explaining the indepth story of chocolate in York - it's quite the history. Plenty of free chocolate provided as part of your tour. Shop with extensive selection of local chocolates and sweets.
A. A.
Great place to visit when in York, the tour guide was very helpful & gave a lot of information to us. Best bit was the truffle dipping at the end. Well worth a visit 👍🏻😊
W. P.
This place is brilliant! - The tour is very interesting and the guide we had was very good. She managed to get through the whole tour without killing the annoying child who had verbal diarrhea at every point. We barely went 10m without getting to sample something from the stage of chocolate manufacture or history. It is very informative and very well done. It took about 75 minutes for the tour and just the right amount of information to keep it interesting and fun. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and I cant fault their customer service at all. We did the top and tail tour saving some money, but it was well worth the full price. - The cafe downstairs is pretty good value, compared to local alternatives. The hot chocolates are superb!
D. T.
From the outside you wouldn't believe they could provide such a good tour within. Our guide was fantastic, acting out her role with aplomb and helping bring the whole story to life. There is great use of technology and I was genuinely surprised to hear about the history of some of my favourite chocolate bars and confectionery. Plenty of tasting and interaction throughout topped off by a visit to the excellent shop.
E. N.
This was a good time and educational, also were able to get some good treats! Kids loved it and we really enjoyed our time spent here. They also have a great drink menu with plenty of options!
B. A.
I have enjoyed my 1st visit to the Chocolate Story in York because it was my 1st time going to the Chocolate Story and Nick was the best Tour Guide even i got to learn how chocolate is made. What a amazing day out at Chocolate Story.
M. B.
Surprisingly good! Not that I expected it to be a bad experience but the tour was excellent, plenty of free samples and you even get to make your own chocolate lolly. Definitely worth a visit! They even cater to certain intolerances (such as milk)!
M. A.
We thought it was quite expensive, but it was well worth it.
A. M.
Lovely 1hour tour on the history and presents of chocolate. Perfect for my 3 year old as he got the chance to decorate some chocolate but also eat on the way round. We all enjoyed our time there today.
A. L.
a decent enough introduction to chocolate for chocolate lovers however if you are expecting huge amounts of the brown stuff like in Charlie and the chocolate factory, you may be slightly disappointed. The staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It would have been nicer to be able to make your own chocolates so would advise with regard to the truffle experience
M. S.
Really enjoyed the tour. Educational, fun and lots of chocolate te try! Tom is a fantastic tour guide
G. C.
Fun and Interesting, just long enough.
We went there as a family, two adults and one 6 y.o. This kept the daughter interested, and the chocolate experience was fun and interesting. It's mostly geared up for older children & adults rather than for children; our daughter enjoyed though, mostly because we made a chocolate lolly :)
We did enjoy some random chocolate-related samples to illustrate the history of chocolate. The staff who did the tour was lively and entertaining too.
Overall, a lovely experience well worth the visit whenever you're in York!
R. C.
Loved this interactive history of chocolate tour! Our guide, the chocolate maker demonstration. And our chance to make and decorate our own chocolate. Fantastic! Now I don't think of chocolate in the same way 😁
A. E.
Very interesting history of chocolate and our guide was very knowledgeable. Making the lollipop was fun and we got some very tasty samples too. Thanks for a fun hour
M.
There for just over an hour. Very informative, lots of chocolate tasting. Facilities fine. Staff nice.
M. A.
Very kind beautiful city
M. M.
Enjoyed the experience! Really friendly staff, yummy chocolates to try in a goody bag (visited during covid) and cheap enough entry. The whole experience lasted about an hour which is just right with small children! Would recommend !
M. M.
Informative and top Mark's to our guide Oscar.
E. W.
The tour was fantastic, I learnt a lot of interesting facts about chocolate making. Special thanks to our tour guide Pedro, who made it a very funny and enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend if you are visiting York.
E. D.
The tour was highly interactive, and interesting. Our guide was fantastic, acting out her role with aplomb and helping bring the whole story to life. Plenty of tasting and interaction throughout topped off by a visit to the excellent shop. Very well organised because you're taken in in small groups. Will definitely be coming again!!
K. W.
We had a lovely time on the tour
S. W.
Really amazing and good value for money, we came across this museum when in York and decided to check it out. At first I thought it was a little pricey but when you go through the tour you realize it is a bargain. I recommend this for people of all ages and it is sure to get your taste buds tingling. The museum has hands on activities including making your own chocolate lolly. If I was to go back to York I would definitely visit this place again.
f.
Absolutely loved the experience here, definitely something I would love to do again especially with all of the free chocolate handouts, lol.
F. B.
We had a great time here, all the staff are so friendly, our guide Serena was especially fabulous, she was really enthusiastic and knew what she was talking about. You get tasters of chocolate and to decorate your own lolly too. Cannot recommend this enough, a must see in York.
A. F.
Great experience very informative. Well worth visiting
H. J.
Great small manufacturers, producing some delightful chocolate. The tour was very informative and our guide was knowledgeable and experienced, with a friendly service. Highly recommended for those chocolate lovers 👌🏾
J. F.
This place is a fantastic experience and day out for the whole family! Lots of chocolate to try and the opportunity to make a chocolate lollipop at the end which was a wonderful activity!
E. S.
York is a great historic city, however the York Chocolate Story is one of the best visitor attractions we have been to as a family ever, not just because of the free bags of chocolate! Our guide and host for the visit was very knowledgeable about the history of confectionary , she was passionate, engaging and really fascinating to listen too..I never knew the Rowntree brothers were so instrumental within the UK for sweets, or that the Aztecs killed each other for chocolate! Something for Kids and Adults alike with an interactive bit at the end!! Great value for money..
N. D.
Me and my wife really loved the chocolate factory story, the interactive way which it is told and the constant smell of chocolate, there's surprising amount you actually might not know. However be prepared to stand up for fairly lengthy amounts at a time.
We feel there should be more seating so can concentrate on what is being said, than thinking about how long we have to stand on the spot, given that there appeared to enough room for them. Despite this it hasn't ruined the story itself and overall deserves the rating.
A. B.
Very great storytelling very educational, great chocolate, tour guide (Nick) was both very friendly and informative. Lovely experience! Would recommend
B. K.
This was the most Amazing tour. Lee the guide was witty, pleasant and just made the whole tour in general fantastic! Your are guided through the history of chocolate, where I was again impressed by Lee and his knowledge of all things chocolate related. You get to try lots of different things, take some home and learn some amazing facts. I could not recommend this more, absolute 10/10
m. h.
Nice lovely tour
The guy josh was very very funny.
J. D.
If your visiting York then I would definitely recommend this tour. The host was very informative and made the tour a delight. Also the hot chocolates you can buy from the shop are amazing.
G. G.
Great value for money for all ages to enjoy
N. W.
This was a interesting tour, telling process of chocolate being made and history of some. The tasting bag was great to. Very good demonstrations. The lolly making at end is great too. Staff were friendly and helpful.
K. M.
Great place to visit for all ages. Very informative and even got to make our own lollipops
h. j.
Loved it. And Robbie our host was really fun. Kids Really enjoyed it! Best attraction in York in their opinion
P. T.
Great tour guide, a free sample in each of the different rooms visited. The tour includes making your own chocolate lolly (amazing how many toppings people can cram on!). Watch how chocolates are made, then sample then. Just long enough to keep children interested. Lovely staff.
E. C.
Loved the history, free samples including the make your own chocolate stick, shop and amazing sets explained well by guide who I think was called Frankie and was really nice and kind
J. D.
COVID TIMES REVIEW: You have to book in this covid period for certain time slots. You get led in small groups by an experienced guide. As you wait for the lift to take you to your first chocolatey destination there are pictures of the first types of all the chocolate you can think of. They will tell you how that bar came to be while you go down one household at a time. You can't eat the chocolate whilst you in the "factory" but you still get your free chocolate to eat when you get out. They do give a lot of dark and white chocolate as freebies so if you only like milk choc, you may be disappointed. You get to make you own white chocolate lolly with sprinkles and biscuit. Obviously you must wear your mask all the way around but it's not roasting in there so don't worry about that. The tour is mildly interactive and is much more entertaining with interesting questions by the group. I don't recommend the chocolate gift shop though, a lot of the chocolate is overpriced and not the sweet sugared choc you know and love, it tastes a bit bland. The actual experience 4/5, the choc 2/5. Would recommend for chocolate connoisseurs, ie chubsters like myself.
H. W.
We visited as a lot of other attractions in York were still closed.
The story of the history of chocolate in York was interesting, but very high level and presented in a semi-theatrical way (I presume aimed at children).
It was a relatively short experience.
We enjoyed decorating our own chocolate lolly, but in theory could have done this at home.
Overall, it was an enjoyable visit, but I wouldn't return as I don't think it was good value for money.
L. W.
Very interesting, well paced tour of the history of chocolate in York. This is not a factory tour but a journey through various rooms where the story is told in an entertaining way culminating in an opportunity to decorate your own chocolate lollipop. Great fun for kids but interesting enough for adults to enjoy too. Can get busy. We bought our tickets the previous day for a specific time slot.
C. B.
All staff lovely and informative. Serena very friendly. Social distance is well respected
j. l.
Great time, well worth the fee
J. h.
Great experience Ellie made it a great tour and it was an interesting experience
G. B.
Mint. Went with the daughter and my grandkids. Proper good staff. Wud give a better review if I cud
E.
I did the guided tour and it was very fun and interesting to get the historical background of chocolate in several creative and entertaining ways. The guide was energetic and very friendly, and we got a lot of chocolate samples on the way. I would recommend the tour to anyone, little and grown ups.
M. B.
Excellent everything you need to know about Yorks chocolate industry, Louis was very good guide.
N. T.
Despite going to York fairly often over the years I had never been here until recently and I wish I had visited sooner. It was interesting learning about the history of chocolate and York's involvement in the mass production. Robbie was our guide and he was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about chocolate and it's history; full of facts. The chocolate samples were good when going through the history of chocolate production (even if they didn't taste great) as it made it more interactive to know how the taste of chocolate products has improved to what we have now. The highlight had to be making our own chocolate lollipop. It was great and tasted delicious. All staff we encountered were friendly and knowledgeable and I would highly recommend a visit.
G. S.
Really nice little history of chocolate. Interactive and suitable for all ages. And you get a few treats along the tour! The guide we had was a lot of fun and seemed very passionate about the information he was giving us.
c. m.
A great little experience we'll worth the time our guide Louis was awesome, a great crowd pleaser. It was alot of fun and the place was really well thought out and great fun. Would highly recommend.
A. G.
Had a brilliant time on our visit. We were a party of 7..2 adults and 5 children aged 3-16. They all loved it, specially making their own chocolate lollypops and tasting chocolate through the ages. our guide was Karl,he made it really interesting for us all. Would definitely recommend it!
J. L.
The tour was very interesting and the staff have a deep knowledge of the subject. Was also really impressed they were going out of their way to make sure I could join in with my lactose intolerant. This I really appreciated as I went in expecting not to be. I woudl recommend this for everyone to experience.
R. O.
Robbie was an enthusiastic and informative guide. Good pacing of the tour with right balance of educational and hands on activities. Would recommend. Had no idea York was so important to chocolate production in the UK!
Y. B.
Really enjoyable experience and definitely the best tour and tour guide, not to forget those yummy chocolates
A. N.
Very family welcome. Staff seemed to enjoy their work. Guide Steve was informative and friendly. Each section was done in good manner, enjoyed the way that the story of how the families of chocolate came was explained. Won't say more so not to spoil. Steve's explanation of the process of how we get coco & chocolate was enjoyable. Had the chance to make our own chocolate lolly to take away with us 😁 and shown how to make filled chocolate by choclatier Chelsea was great... even better when we got to try some. Great couple of hours
L. N.
Excellent tour. Good for adults and children. Our guide Nick was very entertaining and informative. We were taken through the history and methods of chocolate making before having a chance to decorate our own chocolate lollies and watch a chocolate making demonstrations. Would recommend to anyone.
A. W.
A fascinating insight into the history of chocolate-making in York. Our guide, Pedro, was enthusiastic and entertaining. We loved making truffles and chocolate lollipops to take away at the end.
B. S.
The tour guide was wonderful, very friendly and knowledgeable. Lots of free chocolate and overall great value for money.
A. B.
Loved the tour which was a great relief to the rainy and cold day outside in York. Stopped for a white hot chocolate and a cuppa whilst waiting for the tour which was delicious. The table set up could be better. The tour was great. Our guide was very engaging and funny. I loved the section where he interacted with the pictures. It was a great way to engage participants in the chocolate journey of York. All the taste testing was very interesting. Thanks :)
Definitely worth a visit for anyone visiting York :)
S.
Went with my boyfriend yesterday and we were thrilled by the experience. Very friendly, chatty guide. Interesting and interactive (as much as you can be during the pandemic) and particularly enjoyed the choc lolly decorating 👌🏼
R. Y.
Very interesting place to visit and to learn about the history of chocolate and the multiple choclate companies that we now have. The tour guide was very good and full of energy about the topic and really brought the information to life. I would have liked a little bit more space (time wise) between groups as you could hear / see what was happening next due to the previous group only just being ahead of you.
C. B.
The tour is both entertaining and informative. The fact that you get to try a few chocolates and make your own chocolate lollipop is a definite bonus.
There's a short trip in an elevator at the start of the tour but if you don't like confined spaces just ask and you can take the stairs instead.
C. T.
Really lovely tour guide (Robbie) who made a genuine effort to involve the group.
You get a decent amount of goodies to take away and considering the effects of Covid I think they have done well to still keep in interactive and fun.
You learn some interesting things but it was shorter than we expected it to be!
B. F.
Strongly recommended for those who would like to get a bit of insight of the history of chocolate . A guide with full of knowledge and passion. And at last, amazing tasting , quality chocolate.
S. R.
It's much better than I was expecting. It was very informative and entertaining, plus you get to make chocolate lollies. Well worth a visit.
The only issue is it is maybe slightly too expensive. £35 for 2 adults and 1 child is wee bit steep, especially when you consider the tour/experience only lasts about an hour. Also, the 2018 price were more than 7.5% more than they were in 2017. You get 25% off if you're an English Heritage member. It would have saved us the best part of a tenner if we'd remembered.
L. M.
Very good with great covid measures. Tour almost unaffected by covid which is good. Good background story and videos to watch, good explanations and lots of free chocolate samples. Making your chocolate lolly was great and interesting watching chocolate making demonstration at the end. Overall definitely worth a visit. 5/5.
F.
Tour lasted an hour. Was fun and informative. Carl our tour guide was really good - he kept it jolly. Got to try raw chocolate and taste different ones throughout the tour. Got a chance to make our own chocolate lollies with a selection of toppings which was fun and also see how chocolate was tempered. Felt the ticket admission for 2 adults was abit pricey ( £12.50 each per adult ) - would recommend it if you have kids otherwise wouldn't visit it again.
H. S.
Wonderful little tour, and good covid measures in place. Very informative staff. Would recommend! The chocolate freebies were a lovely bonus.
S. S.
A great little tour. Was very interesting and informative. The guide was friendly. We paid extra for the truffle rolling which was a nice little extra. You also get to make your own choco-pop. Free samples of chocolate too. Certainly worth a visit if you like chocolate.
A. D.
It's a really nice experience and the tour guide we had was really funny and played the role very well.
We understood how chocolate is made and where it comes from and we got to taste many different varites of chocolate from dark to Belgian.
The best part was when we made our own chocolate.
It's a must visit if you're in York and I advise that you have a water bottle with you as you will get thirsty.
Overall all it was a wonderful experience and I appreciate the effort done to keep this place going.
o.
This is perhaps one of the most entertaining, interesting, and most mouth-watering places to visit in York! The tour guides are fantastic, the building is of really great quality technology wide, and the chocolates are so, so delicious! It's unlike any I've had before. I definitely recommend to anyone visiting York to stop by, as it has an incredible history to the town and even those who don't care much about chocolate can have a good time. 10/10!
A. N.
Very interesting and fun, but the price seems to be a little bit too high overall. The staff was very kind, polite and funny. We got some chocolate and a lollipop decorated by us. My favourite part was the screens where people were talking to each other being on a different screen, including the member of the staff, everything was perfectly timed. 👌
j.
This was a tricky one to rate. I liked the overall experience I actually went as I'd seen a review saying it was a great day out for a toddler. So I took my toddler and I'm not saying it was a bad day out there was decorating chocolate lollies and sweet samples that were great however I feel the part that let the tour down (with toddler in tow) was that although there is seating to make it easier throughout the tour to make it easier it's a bums on seats first kind of game so naturally the child free adults got there before me with said toddler and the older people meaning we were left standing which led to a fed up toddler and standing older people. However all in all great day out especially for single people or with older children (and potentially with toddlers if your lucky enough to fall upon a small tour size to leave seats spare)
T. L.
Great to watch what they do and to understand the history.
R. B.
An amazing experience that makes history fun. Plus you get free quality chocolate!
S. P.
The story of chocolate was quite interesting. There was a bit of interaction & you get to create your own chocolate lolly. I was hoping to receive a little bit more chocolate for the price.
K. S.
I can't recommend this tour more, it's an absolute must if you are visiting York. Really interesting and interactive.
So many chocolate samples to try.
My daughter hasn't stopped telling everyone about what she learned and to keep the attention of a 5 year old is impressive in itself.
Not too big of a group on the tour so everyone got to see and do everything.
It was also a bonus to make our own chocolate lollypops to take home. It was a lovely reminder of a great afternoon.
C. M.
Wasn't going to go but so glad I did. If your visiting york then I would say it's one of the things you should have on your list. Are guide/storyteller was really good and made it feel like you were back in time. You get to see all the different stages the coco bean goes through before it becomes chocolate and also try the chocolate from the each stage. Then we made a white chocolate lolly and added decorations to it. Well worth the money and next time I'm in york I'd probably do it again.
L. B.
What a wonderful place. Having visited once before and loved it, we wanted to bring our children to enjoy the experience with us, and it didn't let us down. Even contending with current pandemic restrictions, the staff made the whole process enjoyable and interesting. There were some slight modifications from our original visit, but you wouldn't know it as the journey is thoroughly engaging and fun. The chocolate lolly making was a particular favourite amongst us all....and tasted amazing!
As you are grouped in small parties it was easy to hear everything being explained and not feel the claustrophobia you can sometimes get when all forced round at once.
Went to Cadburys World a couple years back, and whilst it was a big place with a fair bit to see and do, it really didn't compare to this place. It was uncomfortably busy, lacked any magic. Felt like a conveyer belt just throwing the occasional chocolate bar at you.
Well done Yorks Chocolate Story, it really was a treat to come to you and we learned lots too!
N. P.
An interactive, interesting and fun exhibition x
J. U. L. D. d. L.
One of the best experiences I had in York especially with the host of the guided tour, Danny whom was just hilarious to listen to and fun. The chocolate is delicious, the experience is amazing, the history of York's chocolate scene was quite interesting since it has had an important influence on history in in the UK and the world. This only adds more history to the already exciting city of York. BTW you do get a lot of chocolate at the end ;)
M. S.
Good value for the money. Tour was interactive and interesting. Josh was a great tour guide!
K. C.
Really nice and if you get Joe for a tour guy your onto a winner. He makes the whole experience interesting and exciting for those who come along. And the chocolate lolly you get to make at the end is the best one chocolate you will ever have
J. L.
Very knowledgeable about the subject, passionate, but long winded, presentation skills need addressing, over the heads of the children. Would suggest more interaction with children, and presented at their level.
r. c.
Fantastic and Informative tour of the history and production of chocolate, as well as making your own custom chocolate popsicle and plenty to sample to try. Recommend for all ages
M. S.
Nice experience! The guide was lovely and very helpful. In the first part there is the story of York as a chocolate producer city and you also get to taste chocolate! in the second part there is an explanation about how chocolate is made (and also an activity to produce your own chocolate lollipop!). It is perfect for kids but pretty enjoyable also for adults, even if explanations are a little bit too basic
A. B.
Ok tour. There was some very good information passed on from the guide, who was good at his job (Robbie). The children certainly enjoyed themselves. Worth a visit if you like chocolate.
K. P.
Lovely little visit, tour guide was very informative, it was very interesting and getting to see how the chocolates are made, it was nice making our own chocolate lollipops too, would recommend a visit
T. B.
York's Chocolate Story was a wonderful way to spend a good hour. Our guide Pedro was very informative and made the visit so enjoyable. We were taken through the story of chocolate from Peru? and the Incas to York. We were given samples of cocoa and chocolate varying from tasty to quite revolting. The final part of the tour was to make a chocolate lollipop and decorate it - such fun. We were given the lolly to take home with us. Our 3 year old grand daughter really enjoyed it declaring the best lolly ever !!!!!!
R. C.
We visited a few weeks back so I can't remember the tour guides name, however he was brilliant and very informative. Lots of interesting facts and chocolate to try throughout too, would probably allow an hour for the tour and there is set times so make sure you check. The cafe is nice and seemed fairly priced for what we had while we waited for our tour to begin.
A. L.
This was really interesting. The guide, Becky (i think her name was), was great! Very informative & friendly. Loved that it was a tour rather than lots of reading on walls (like another popular chocolate factory). We got to taste raw coco (Not pleasent, but good to give it a go), and we made our own chocolate lolly pops. Highly recommend this
C. R.
As a chocoholic I really enjoyed the tour.
The guide - Carl, was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable which provided a good insight to the history behind chocolate and how it started in England.
Got to understand how to taste chocolate properly and saw some being made at the end. We also made our own chocolate lollys to take away which was an added bonus. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the history behind English chocolate and just chocolate lovers in general.
C. I.
Great experience, and a lot of delicious samples!
I. H.
Great tour and guides were very friendly and helpful.😀😀😀 On the negative.👎....Toilets were squashed into the corner of the shop creating queues when busy and not enough seats in cafe. No descriptions on cups when collecting drinks so didn't know if I was drinking my daughters hot chocolate or mine. No dustbin in the Cafe to put rubbish.
D. M.
The guide we had was really chatty and funny, a few genuine laugh out loud moments. Decent for passing a couple of hours, but not amazing. You get to decorate your own chocolate lolly at the end of the tour which is fun. Lots of small free samples on the tour too.
I. D.
We only went in on an off chance and time to burn, and we throughly enjoyed this.
Lee, who did the tour was highly knowledgeable - I've never known anyone who could date every confectionery brand!
The tour was highly interactive, and interesting.
This is a definite for all ages.
And best of all. FREE CHOCOLATE 🍫

The entry fee was £15 for an adult and student, which I thought was a bit pricey. However, the information in the tour was good and you get a few samples to try, which may justify the cost.

Booked the tour as surprise for my wife. Staff were really helpful in helping me keep it a surprise for her. Tour was brilliant, can't remember if tour guide was called Lee or Keith (sorry) great way to spend an hour or so learning the history of chocolate.

A friend recommended York's Chocolate Story to us and I'm so glad they did! I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but it's an interactive tour through the history of chocolate, with a focus on York's chocolate past. As you'd hope, there is plenty of opportunity to sample chocolate along the way and it's genuinely interesting and engaging finding out more. Our guide was particularly enthusiastic and really made it a great experience!

For anyone travelling far if you want to get in any of the indoor tours and museums in York, please remember to prebook tickets online well in advance, it is essential to do otherwise won’t be allowed in anywhere. Most of the attractions have tickets sold out for days in advance. It is absolutely understandable and it is for our own safety during COVID, just thought since there’s no warnings of this on google map, thought I would leave a warning here so if you’re like me didn’t check every website of each attraction before travelling, at least you can book appointments for some places in time.

Totally worth going too. Enjoyed every minute of the tour and it was a brilliant experience to do and came back with some amazing chocolate I made myself.

Really good fun, learning about the history chocolate. Plenty of samples as you go round as well, then you get to make your own lolly to take away, and see how they make the filled chocolates (yes you get to try these too!). Our guide Lee was very knowledgeable and friendly. At the end there's a shop with plenty of weird and wonderful chocolate to choose from!

Incredible! Our tour guide Nick was very engaging and made the entire experience thoroughly interesting. Lots of little tasters made it worth the money and all the staff were lovely and helpful. Would say that the shop is a little over-priced but would certainly recommend!

A very well articulated and planned chocolate show that provides audience with a lot of historical information about the chocolate industry. Also it gives an interesting and interactive experience about the chocolate manufacturing. In addition to tasting various chocolate ingredients.
Our tour lasted for one hour and was headed by Mr Lee, who provided a lot of information with touch of humorous. At the end of the tour also visitors will experience making their own chocolate bar.

Definitely worth doing! The guide was extremely good & the interplay with the "Photographs" was fantastic. We got to make a chocolate lolly, tried several chocolate samples & bought some to take home from the gift shop.

Loved this place! Seemed a bit expensive until we got inside, was great fun. Trying loads of chocolate and getting to make your own. Took partner and 2 year old daughter. She got a little bit grumpy during the talks when she finished the chocolate she was given, but just about managed to keep her entertained with my phone :)
Would recommend !

Pleased to see choc story back open. Tour guide was super, and place was very covid safe. Just wish we could have tasted our bag of chocs as we went around. Is that possible to do if we hand sanitise? But pleased we still made lollies there.

Wow. This was just splendid! This is really a good little guided tour. There is some free chocolate, but also plenty of history and insight into current modern techniques. Our tour guide Steven was very good. He really showed his knowledge, enthusiasm and experience. Thanks!
