Large woodlands to explore in the heart of Essex.
Lots of trails to venture on.
Small carpark busy at times, not sign posted from the main road. Access for cars is from a single track gravel road.

HIDDEN CARPARK in the trees, it's shown on OS Maps, but there is no sign to it on the road. Well maintained, room for 10 or so cars, waste/dog bins etc. Plus Chalkney Woods are stunning, lots of tracks and areas to play lead directly from car park.

Lovely woods, nice in all seasons. Can be very muddy, takes a while for the land to dry out. Things always being built all over but I've never seen anyone doing anything there in daylight hours. The driveway could be better, recent minor improvements but still could be better. Popular for dog walking and general walks, never seems crowded. Bins are sometimes overflowing which spoils the car.ark.area occasionally. Not suitable for wheelchair users. There are many pathways and after a few visits reasonably easy to navigate. You can do walks as long or short as you want. There are some ponds that stagnate, so be careful with dogs off lead.
All in all very pleasant place.

Car park for Chalkney woods. It's a gravel track leading to a gravel car park. There is no sign from the road indicating that the track leads to a car park and the sides of the track are quite overgrown at the moment and could do with cutting back. This makes it a little difficult to find / get too however the car park is tidy and well maintained.

Best woods in the area. Any time of year. Bluebell season is awesome. My family and I as well as all our friends love it here. Do not be put off if there are lots of cars. The woods are plenty big enough to enjoy a walk without tailgating another group. Highly recommend.

Chalkney Woods is a well managed woods offering a very pleasant location for a quiet stroll -particularly good for a dog walk. It's a reasonable distance from any major roads, leading to an environment with little human background noise other than occasional light aircraft from a nearby airfield and some farmyard noises. Plenty of birdsong. Good for wildlife - badgers, foxes, deer can all be spotted. The bluebell display in late-April early-May is spectacular.
Only negative aspect is that the paths can get very muddy during winter months.

Wonderful wooden walks. Local children enjoy building twig huts here... There are a few murky ponds to look out for if the kids or dogs like getting mucky. Plenty of fun here for children who.want to.learn how to.explore.

Lovely woods but car park is small at the end of a bumpy single track cart track.

The car park that we used can get crowded as it is only at the side of the road but there is another larger car park down the hill
