Reviews of Highwoods Country Park
S. S.
There are open areas and wooded areas.
We didn't see a playground area but we weren't looking for one.
Our children looked for birds, bugs and fungus, and vegetation around the stream.
The lake area is interesting we can find ducks, door mice, fish jumping out the water, people fishing and things I forgot about. Dogs are expected to be on a lead around the lake to avoid them swimming in the lake.
They're is a restroom in the visitors center but it's only open between 8:30 & 16:30.
We visited the be park twice, the first time was on a really warm day, the wooded area gave us respite from the heat. The seconds time, the wooded area sheltered us from the rain. The children loved it and be we had a pleasant walk.
Well with it.
H. W.
Really nice walks. Lovely big area for children to tire themselves out in. Saw deer, woodpeckers, squirrels and lots of little birds. Unfortunately some areas are a bit run down, namely the lake which was full of rubbish with rats and the children's play areas.
C.
Highwoods is a great country park with meadows, forest areas, a lake and play park. Highly recommend visiting for walks and great with kids / dog.
R. T.
Lovely park with a good mixture of woodland and open fields. Good play areas too for kids who like to climb etc.
A. D.
Lovely park. Lots to see and explore all year round. Recently Went to a westie walk there.
J. T.
Beautiful place to visit for a long walk or just for a picnic.
Vast open spaces for ball games etc.
Children will love it.
Small visitor centre where food and ice cream can be purchased.
Large carpark and toilets.
Children's play area and a communal garden as well.
It would be easy to spend many hours here. So much to see and do.
C. M.
What a beautiful place to walk and spend time in. The oak trees are beautiful and the buttercup and wild flower grass lands are so pretty. I really loved it! The bird song shows that there is an abundance of wildlife also. Really really lovely, and definitely going to visit again.
A. W.
Lovely park with nice walks, a lake where you can fish under licence but you have to put the fish back. There are toilets that are clean and a cafe of sorts both shut at 4 30 pm. They could do more with the cafe as only canned drinks and ices from a fridge.
This Lovely park is just across the road from the Primary care centre and a short walk to the Colchester General hospital, at one pound for two hours parking a great way to while away the time whilst waiting to.pick up friends visiting the hospital.
More could be done with the cafe, which could make a great afternoon tea etc. If you want water to drink it comes Al the way from Austria in a can, not sure why we cannot have water from the UK.
T. P.
Lovely quiet place. Nice walks, it has toilet facilities at entrance and a little shop which sells nicks and nacks. As we went on a Tuesday we had no problem parking but at weekends I can see this being a bit of an issue. £1 parking for two hours £2 parking for3 to 4 hours the machine does not take cash only card.
S. G.
Lovely place to enjoy nature for kids and adults.a complete day out to refresh
D. B.
Highwoods country park is great for walks or just to walk your pet. There is a small lake that is surrounded by forest.
There are not many things to do for kids. Overall is a great place for picnic and walks in nature.
G. S.
Nice place for a walk. We needed a trail which was accessible for a wheelchair. We just about managed but it would have been helpful if there was a map or some directions to which paths were suitable.
A. S. N.
It's an amazing place to have a walk or spend some quality time with loved ones, drop by the lake, pack some food to have it on the way, or walk your dog on an evening. It's just like Healing and refreshing, good for your mental health.
W. L.
Had a lovely morning's walk here, on a Saturday morning, with some friends and members of our Camera Club. Lovely place. You wouldn't think you were in Colchester, with such a large expanse of green open space and woodland to explore.
C. H.
Great place to walk the dog. Plenty to do with young families. Cycle paths run throughout the park and make it accessible to the town centre
D. P.
Excellent dog walking park, 75 Westies loved it!!!
N. S.
Very calm and peaceful place great for long family walks and not only. You can go there with your beloved ones and have a picnick or even take you dog for a walk. Fishermens are welcome! Beautiful country park with a lot of greenery and trees. I love the place. Best place ever if you want to get out of the city and have time just for your Self. You can read books, write, paint anything you want.
L. S.
Highwoods country park is great place for kids to have and explore, it’s has climbing walls, a really good play park and an excellent area for den building.
Another great thing about this park is how dog friendly this place is, with plenty of area to run around in, lots smells to be sniffed and a great place to meet other dogs and dog walkers. Also there is dog drinking facilities up at the visitor centre.🐶🐶🐶
I’d highly recommend a visit here, especially for families with dogs, the parking costs are worth every penny.
10/10 would visit again, maybe next time with a picnic down by the lake. 😎😎
D. D.
Many entrances all with different views etc
F. A.
Car park 50p for 2 hours. Clean public toilets. Gift/drinks & information shop. Beautiful walks through woods & around the lake. Dog friendly, clear signs where they are permitted to be off the lead. Seats over looking looking the lake, very serene. Lots of info signs about the wild life. Permits for fishing are available & classes for beginners
M. C.
The green lung of Colchester. It's such a great space and great for young and old. Parking is £1 for two hours and the toilets are open.
D. B.
Honest David's reviews 1.5.19
Lovely big park opposite the hospital.. nice for a little walk and clear your head or to take the children for a picnic.
Parking is very cheap, 50p for two parking, There's a huge forest with benches everywhere if you just want to sit for a bit, keep walking and there are plsy areas for the children and some adults could use if you don't get caught. Keep going and there's benches to have a picnic on and then you cone to the fields and the very big pond, again benches to sit in and take it all in.
When your done there the gift shop that also sells snacks and ice creams. Toilets are clean and tidy including disable toilet.
All in all a great place to go and get back to a quiet life
Thanks highwoods park 5* stars from me
M. C.
Beautiful park, which includes a large wood, a fishing lake, an open green and kids parks and activities Lots of trails to walk along or to exercise. Great for dogs, for picnics. Beautiful in all seasons.
A. W.
A perfect place for nature walks, educational days out, for kids to play or simply walk the dog
H. L. C.
A really huge green area, lovely for picnic or just a long walk specially in the summer. Lake quite tiny though
P. D.
Really lovely place to visit with the family. There are a few play areas suitable for different ages, den building and also a beautiful lake. There are many footpaths and in the summer it's lovely to have a picnic on the grass overlooking the lake.
E. L.
This is a beautiful walkway through trees. Plenty of people walking about pets, families etc. Great atmosphere and stunning for a walk/run. Parts are hilly by all in all a lovely walk, we went on a Saturday afternoon and it was very cute as a little couple quality time ♡
s. G.
Highwoods is a great place to cycle andwalk around, I often take a wonder through here with the kids to get them out especially during lockdown it was a god send. When there isn't a lockdown there is also an adventure playground and small climbing wall. The vusitor centre does ice-creams, coffee etc.
K. Y.
It's always really nice to walk in a large area. This place is mostly quiet and covers both green grass, woody forest, a lake, skate park, and playground! I enjoy different routes and being able to enjoy the scenery and seeing dog owners with their dogs.
N. B.
Excellent walking routes. Worth downloading the park's map as its easy to get lost
A. F.
Lovely outdoor space. Nice for dog walks and fishing. Also has a lovely park for children and den building area. Nature trails, toilets and shop/cafe which is open at busier times.
H. B.
Lovely place for dog walking in shade. Nice shade in car park. Never been before, would definitely be going again and recommend.
D. H.
Beautiful park, lots of different paths. Family oriented
J. B.
Wonderful bluebell Woods and walk. Signposting not so great but OK. Gents toilets could be cleaner. Plenty of car parking at a very fair price.
J. C.
It's a lovely area to go for a walk especially at the moment with the flourishing shrubs, the cafe is interesting, downside for a walk is some of the dog walkers not picking up when their dog fouls the paths.
d. w.
Lovely Woodland Walk with The Park Ranger at HighWoods Country Park tonight. Pouring with rain but an informative and leisurely walk, looking at all The beautiful Bluebells.
J. A.
Lovely woods with loads of paths, fields and adventures to be had. Well worth exploring and getting a little lost.
E. F.
Lovely place. Great for kids. Dog loves the walk. Cheap parking. Park is good. Great place for a picnic.
D.
Brilliant little hidden gem! Perfect for a nice stroll, dog walking, fishing and relaxing. Summertime its perfect for a family picnic.
H. C.
Really lovely place. Great walk and scenery.
R. G.
Beautiful walks, a lot to see. Great day out for a picnic or just a long walk. Nice and peaceful. A lot of friendly walkers and dogs. 3 different walks but can combine them into one.
C. G.
Great place for a walk. The woods was very good & a must.
A. C.
I'm fortunate to live very close to this wonderful county park. Great walks, a fishing lake,a riot of bluebells in the spring and plenty to see.
S. K.
Such an expanse of vivid green brings peace and contentment. Our dogs were delighted too!
M. L.
Excellent park, with good Visitors Centre and very well appointed seating and facilities for leisure walking and children's play...
M. S.
Beautiful park, great playground for children and dog friendly (must be on a lead). Great for a walk through the woods, especially if it's picnic weather, plenty of benches and a lovely lake.
D. B.
Wonderful park, fantastic lake and views of town, worth a visit.
A real gem.
R. T.
I spend a shed load of time here. Visit nearly every day - whether it's walking the fog, looking for great photos, picking elderflowers/berries for homebrew or just taking in the peaceful Essex countryside a spit's distance from Colchester town centre. There's also a good number of geocaches to find!
J. V.
Incredibly grateful to have this beautiful park on my doorstep. Thank you for keeping it so clean as well.
L. K.
Lovely relaxing walk. Plenty of options on routes. Would be nice if it had a tea room.
P. R.
I am very fortunate to have this park on my doorstep. Regardless of how busy it is there is always a quiet corner to explore. The lake in the centre is worth aiming for and is especially nice at sunrise or sunset (but check opening times!). Snowy days here are also good due to the hills. Expect to see loads of squirrels, birds, rabbits etc and different species of deer (if you're very quiet). There are also few kids' play areas and nature trails marked out. The only negatives are parking charges and dog fouling due to selfish owners and despite plentiful signage - watch where you walk/cycle
K. W.
It's superb, I've been there hundreds if times, I could never tire of it...hope it doesn't get too busy
D.
Love playing the squirrel game, don't know it? Where u been basically see a squirrel u say squirrel but Ur partner or whoever Ur with has to see it most squirrels wins once Ur back at carpark game over no fake squirrel calls
M. D. J.
Great places for walks, pet friendly the kids will love the space to run and play. Lots of variety, open spaces, woodland areas as well.
D. K.
Lovely place for a walk with nice views and as it's big it comes across as quiet
K. A.
Beautiful area. Views of Colchester from afar and the paths are well maintained and secluded. The lake is beautiful as well. Worth the visit.
E. V.
A country park for all seasons.
R. W.
Always love going round this park; we often go round it a couple of times combining all the listed routes.
L.
Had a lovely day in Highwoods the other day. Full to the brim with wildlife if you take the time to stop and look, and not awfully busy either. Love it every time I visit!
M. D.
Great country park. Very reasonable price for parking, if I recall it was £1 for upto 2 hours. Great assault course type park for the older kids. Woods to explore as well as grassed areas for picnics and football. Also a great place to have a run. With plenty of tracks and paths to take for a varied circuit.
J. A. M.
Absolutely gorgeous place. Lovely walk, lovely people in the shop and just an absolutely amazing place to be.
M. D.
Had no idea how big this park is when you park your car. Easy guide routes, lots of space for children. Beautiful views of Colchester
L. B.
We come her on the first Sunday of the month for the local pug walk. Great walking and brilliant views well worth the visit
L. H.
Lovely walk in the snow... Well laid out paths and signposted.
N. F.
Only spent a little while in the play area just up from the visitor centre. Will need to go back. My daughter enjoyed it.
M. M.
Great place for an off road ‘non extreme ‘ bike ride. Plenty of cycle tracks approx 1/2hr-45mins from end to end
S. W.
Good mix of woodland walks, a fishing lake and a children's play area providing plenty of den building opertunity. Visitor centre has refreshments and toilets along with pay and display carpark.
M. E.
Huge park, with a lake, lots of paths and a few play centres. Good for the whole family, lock down or not. :)
A. D.
Nice place to visit for a walk and a picnic. Good facilities
T. W.
Lovely park. Great for a family walk or picnic. The play area is fab too. The kids love it. I only knocked a star off as the visitor center is a bit lacking. Fine for an ice cream or bag of crisps, but no hot food and coffee is just instant. Not sure if that's due to the pandemic or the norm. Lovely none the less.
M. H.
Very relaxing and good walk in the woods ☺
H. C.
Relaxing walk in the early evening.. a really great space to come back to nature and ground yourself.
S. w.
Great place to walk the dog kids love running around
P. C.
An excellent balance of maintained and wild grassland areas set amongst a handsome man-made woodland. Great for dog walking, Nordic walking and exploration by kids.
Very good for running trails.
They host a Saturday park run here.
Toilets, car park and visitors centre at one entrance and another car park at Chantarelle entrance.
Go on, give it a whirl. You know it makes sense
M. “. L.
Lovely park, choice of walks, good coffee shop, easy parking.
D. W.
I love this place for walks, especially through the wooded areas. Very pretty in spring. Although it's popular, there's plenty of space so it's sociable without being too busy. Could use a decent coffee place though for when such things are allowed again.
S. C.
Good place for kids to play but some cctv camers in the park would be recommended as for kids's safety
T. N.
Lovely well maintained park. Good all year round. Dogs allowed.
r. c.
It's beautiful to be surrounded by trees and birds but just remember it can get muddy
E.
Such a gorgeous park, and a great sanctuary during the pandemic with some flat areas and steep inclines to get the heart pumping! It is so well looked after, with beautiful trees, fields and wildlife to notice as you walk through. Great for solo and group exploration!
A. B.
Was here only a short time, but seems a very nice place to walk, bring your dog for a walk and there's a play area for kids..
J. R.
Beautiful beyond words. Great place for kids and adults alike. Very clean and superbly maintained. Makes a great day out with walks a plenty and many other activities to enjoy, especially when the sun shines.
A. M.
Best place in Colchester for long walks. Lovely views everywhere
K. A.
Lovely place for fresh air to walk about, chat with friends, even walking with dog but some dog owner have ignored of rule that dog must on lead which made me fed up. Second the speed bump have double bump is bit annonying should place single in row
S. A.
Great for everyone lovely for dog walks
J. C.
Lovely park and friendly reception at visitor centre
R. G.
Cheap parking, 1 pound per 2 hours is great and the park itself is beautiful. We saw deers when we were there, our kids loved it. Also good playing areas for kids.
S. S.
Good, nice place to get a perfect peaceful environment .
R. W.
Great walk for all even areas to let dogs off leads. Pond is a great area for a picnic. Even found a frog
D. H.
Cheap parking, nice walks through woods and green fields. There’s two decent play areas for children too.
M. J.
Stunning, well maintained open space. A few car parks to choose from that are very reasonably priced and lots of walks through the woods and around the cental lake. Even has a kids play area near the welcome centre. Was nice to see the toilets open too in the current climate. Very handy for the little ones and also the bigger ones who drink too much tea or coffee before visiting 😊
D. S.
Beautiful park with great views over Colchester
S. H.
Great little park for dog walking especially. There's even little led lights to help you know where the path is when it gets dark! Definitely recommend taking a torch and a phone as it can get very dark and hard to find your way back if you're new!
P. V.
It's a great park to walk around. There is the lake at the bottom but there are some places deep into the forest where you can literally see nobody for hours. It's a top destination for my family and I.
C. B.
Walking, cycling, adventure playing, picnics, fishing, beautiful scenery good clean fun in acres and acres. Car parking all around some free one not. Walk in or cycle, close to Colchester Town. Highly recommended...
W. W.
Plenty of parking, beautifully kept and maintained woodland with pathways and signs for different walks. The adventure playgrounds are well looked after with some excellent equipment. It rarely gets too busy.
There is a lot of space to explore. Den building areas, meadows, pond, fishing lake, picnic grass areas as well as the extensive woodlands. Dogs are welcome and can be off-lead in most areas.
Toilets are spacious and relatively clean and well kept. The gift shop has a nice range of low cost souvenirs and things for kids. They do sell tea and coffee, but it is a pretty basic provision. The parking is cheap (50p for 2 hours).
K. A.
Beautiful park with great woodland and wildlife
G. E.
Car park
Need to pay by card or phone app.
Machine no longer take money
Very nice park with plenty of walks for all abilities
R. O.
I love this place,me and my family we take our dog there for a very long walk.I describe it....peace
b. b.
Such a great place to take the kids, dogs or just yourself, amazing area, very well kept and clean, tea shop and toilets by the entranced, be careful you can get lost but you can download a map of the area, also a great place to fish or just a slow bike ride....parking fee payable...
L. H.
This provided a great place to spend a few hours and enjoy a picnic. If you're feeling more energetic you can follow the trails for walks of up to an hour and a half but if you just want to wander about with small children there is still plenty to do.
From the visitors centre you can buy a map for 50p and 'scavenger bags' for £1 each so the children can entertain themselves collecting leaves, twigs, etc and spotting the various wildlife.
The parking was only £2 for 4 hours and the loos at the visitor's centre were clean but they are the only facilities on site.
There are several play/climbing areas aimed at different age/ability children and a super area for den building.
Lots of picnic benches are available in shady areas as well as open spaces for enjoying the sunshine on a picnic blanket.
Highly recommended :-)
l. u.
Lovely. The walk is long enough to feel like a real activity but not too long so the kids don't get tired. We picked up some chestnuts to roast and we did the Halloween trails which was fun and interesting.
J. C.
Absolutely love it here. Kids can play for hours in the park and then can go for a lovely walk or just go sit on a field near the lake. Beautiful place
J. M.
Highwoods is a great woods. Love it. Loads to do and see and there are deer there if you are early and quiet enough. Don't climb the climbing wall if you are a grownup or you'll get stuck.
S. C.
Love it here really great park lots to do loads of groups about fab day out!
P. G.
Great place for all the family, has a children's play area and a lake.plenty of parking spaces and are open 7 days a week.
P. S.
Ideal for dog walks, but they were unable to take a dip in the lake on the hot day we visited. Picnic tables and kiosk for snacks ice creams + toilet facilities.
V. L.
Lovely place to take the dogs for a walk
P. O.
Excellent place to take children from 3 to 12 to the adventure playgrounds . Cafe on site a bit small but sells ice creams etc and has benches outside. Good walks including a pond plus small wildlife abound.Large car park.
If the Council invested a bit of money there it could be even better leisure area.
B. M. C.
Beautiful spot - perfect for walks as there's a couple trails you could mix and match depending on how long you wanted to be walking. Really nice play parks for younger & older kids, and wide open spaces for play outside of those facilties too.
Vistor centre currently closed because of covid restrictions, but public toilets are open (well-stocked, clean, free to use).
There's also a good couple picnic tables near the car parks if you want to sit down, and there was a water bowl left out for dogs there too.
Car park isn't free, but there's an option to pay via an app if you don't have change which is handy. Not too expensive either, but it looked like there were other options too - a few cars were parked on the road at some of the other entrances (vistor centre and car park at the main enterance only).
A. D.
Love it here. Perfect place to be at one with nature 🌸🌲🌳🍀🌿
S. S.
Just beautiful.. Lots of interesting things for children of all ages to engage with...
B. L.
Great place to take kids.
A. D.
Great place to take the dog. There are several different trails you can follow of varying lengths. They had a Halloween trail for kids the day we went but it wasn't crowded at all. There's a lake and lots of beautiful trees and woodland, and some lovely views over the town. Parking cost us £2 for the whole day.
M. C.
Lovely country park for a walk with family including our Dog. We did the yellow trail and found it was well marked out with arrows. Would definitely return.
A. M.
Beautiful park. Except for the excessive amount of fisherman fishing around a single pond. Impaling fish for fun sounds like a weird nice day out to me.
e. b.
Started the Colchester Orbital route Half Marathon from here today. A lovely location and a great park. Lovely walks and play parks for kids included. Parking can be a bit tight
A. K.
A huge park with lots of little bits to see and do. Free car parking on Chanterelle too. Could still use the buggy from that end of the park. Only down side is that all the dog poo bins seemed to be at the visitor centre end of the park. But there were loos open that end and lots of picnic benches too. A climbing wall and spider web, play area, lake and lots of walking trails with dens to build. A lovely park.
c. w.
Was lovely to get out on this frosty morning
S. B.
This is a great place to take the dog for a walk. He was off lead most of the way in and out of the woods. There is a good parking area and well priced too. There is also a little shop to buy refreshments (make sure you have cash though!) Beautiful scenery and a lovely place to walk. A great park area for the kids too. So much to do here so make sure to have the whole day free!
M. B.
Òff work so I stroll round highwood country park, well worth a visit
d. m.
Really nice woodland with lots to look at and walk through has a good play area to keep kids worn out and several picnic benches for eating at, you can get a woodland map from the office for 50p which is worth getting to make the most of your time while here,
C. M.
Very nice park with lovely walks that are lit up at night. Very helpful and clear signage, although perhaps more information in the walk 'pointers' so you know you're following the right way (especially at crossroads) would be helpful. But it's a really beautiful place to visit and walk and be with nature. If you haven't visited, do because it's completely worth it. There's a ton of benches evenly spread out so you can sit down and eat lunch or rest or whatever, so you can take as leisurely and relaxed a walk/jog/run/cycle as you want.
S.
Beautiful place for a walk or cycle
K. p.
The shop don't have many drinks in and the ice lolly callipo was mushy and went every where also it was an amazing view around the lake and pond but no fish there I give a three for the view and the exercise but i left to because there's no signs to show you where we are we also got lost lol and it was Great fun but I don't like the ship there
T. P.
Friendly Staff and Lovely food.
J. N.
Lovely place to visit, nice forest walks that are well sign posted and a lake to picnic by. Good parking (a little pricey if you want to stay the day though).
K. M.
Lovely woodland area to explore, lovely little shop that serves hot drinks. Would highly recommend if you have a dog also! They would love it here; lots of land- saw some very happy looking dogs.
D. M.
Great little walk, weather was a bit groggy so didn't go too far. You have to pay for parking but it's quite cheap 50p for up to two hours. Great little parks and activities for kiddies to keep busy.
J. S.
Nice country park, great place to walk the dog. Things to do for the kids. Park for a pound and the toilets are open.
App available to find your way.
J. G.
Very scenic with woodland and lake with ducks. Ideal walking though very steep hills . Good place for picnic.
Teas etc available when Covid permits.
R. W.
Lovely woodland park to take the kids and dog for a Sunday stroll. Paths are wide and clearly laid out, easy to follow (difficult to get lost) and circuitous routes are varied for a quick stroll or long walk. Only criticism, in such a large space having the exit road running right next to the shop's picnic benches was not a good plan, children on scooters eating ice-cream etc not always looking out for vehicles.
L.
Wonderful park with many different walks and trails depending on length and terrain. There is a beautiful little lake in the middle with other little gems hidden around the park. There is also a big play park for kids which is always in use and well looked after! The only downside is a small carpark, but most people walk there as it is in the middle of residences.
Н. С.
Incredible park with amazing wildlife
D.
Lovely place to visit. Lots of walks, some areas you can let the dog off the lead. Fishing lake. Gardens. Visitors centre with cafe. Would be nice to have a little pond/lake for water loving dogs like mine.
S. H.
I adore this place. Depending on whu h car park you use it will prices vary from free to 50p for two hours or £2 for four... You can stay more but I'm unsure of prices. This park offers a wide range of opportunities. From playgrounds to forest schools, general walks to more challenging, fishing, off road cycling, fungi walks, nature walks, growing projects, choir, evening events, family events.
There is a visitors centre which when open offers hot and cold drinks, snacks, trinkets and educational opportunities. There are also accessible toilets which are open daily. These are situated next to the paying car park off Turner Road near the Hospital
J. C.
Love this place loads of things for children to do pond dipping fishing on the Lake and nice leisurely walks. There is also some green areas where you can have a picnic and play games. Parking is very reasonably priced
P. M.
I love walking my dog here it is a beautiful green space with varied areas woodland field the lake and the play area ideal for families to enjoy.
s. h.
Beautiful area for walking, well designed routes. Plenty of wildlife especially deer if you are lucky enough to see one. Little cafe nice with friendly helpful staff. Parking very reasonably priced with plenty of spaces
S. C.
Lovely place just out of town, great for walks, picnicking or cycling, just a shame that there is a lazy contingent of the human race cannot pick up their rubbish!
D. B.
Lovely scenic views with picnic areas.
Loads of shaded woodland walks and play areas for various age groups of children.
A lovely place to take your children.
S. J.
What a lovely park, so much to do and see, loads of different areas like woods, ponds, hills, fields to see. Only downside was the shop, it has gone a bit OTT with the COVID restrictions. Still a fun family day out.
K. S.
Beautiful park with lots of different areas to enjoy. Full of educational titbits for the kiddies and plenty of room for them to literally run wild. Some gorgeous photo opportunities. The stream and lake are stunning and encourage plenty of wildlife.
D. O.
This was my first visit to the country park! Even though I live locally! And I must admit I enjoyed walking both the yellow and red routes. Some of the veiws of the town were unique. Lots of wildlife to see, and observe.
There is a cafe on site selling drinks and snacks, as well as toilets.
In summary an enjoyable place to spend time.
N. W.
Fantastic place, totally surprised by the way it's laid out and so well managed..even more of a delight was the total lack ...yes total lack of litter..good amount of wildlife - it's a real haven...
C. A.
It was a beautiful sunny day, in Phase 1 of the eased lockdown restrictions and the park was relatively busy. However, people were sat on the bank by the lake and everyone was exercising social distancing.
I tried to walk the yellow and red walking trails, with help from a printed park map, but despite my partner and I being experienced walkers, we didn't find the route signage that great.
Free car parking at the Chanterelle car park is a bonus, but parking at the Visitor Centre is payable by machine.
It's a pleasant park for a stroll, with both shady woodland and open areas.
It's also extremely dog friendly.
A. W.
A beautiful and surprisingly big country park given it's location in Colchester. I can't compliment it more than to say that it's easy to forget that you're not in the country whilst walking round. Lots of little walks through the woods, with plenty of wildlife to keep you company. We saw 2 deer, squirrels and birds galore in the couple of hours we were there today. There's a nice park for the kids if they want it and a little shop for ice cream and drinks. Absolutely lovely place.
E. “. J.
Wonderful day for a good walk
M. R.
Great place to walk the dogs.
J. A.
A stunningly beautiful place. Can't believe it's in the middle of a built up area. The park has a beautiful lake which you can fish in the open season. Lovely walks in the woods. A large expance of greenery complete with seats which goes down to the beautiful lake.
The park has an assault course play area for children aged 8 and upwards. Also picnic table area and visitor information shop.
p.
Great for out door fun. loved it, we had a great time there. The parks there are good just it was very muddy today! It is also a good place for dog walks
N. B.
It's great to be able to find a little bit of countryside in the town. You can see a lot of wildlife and stop hearing traffic. The country park is well kept considering how few people look after it.
M. K.
This is a huge park, great for walking the dogs or burning the children's energy in, dotted around are lovely wooden play apparatuses. And right in the middle a lake. On a sunny day picnics are great here, with a ball.
C. R.
I was watching my daughter and the rest of the vegan runners doing the park run.
S. R.
Large country park with woodland, lake and trails. Special trail for the less mobile located at the Turner Road end. Good outdoor adventure play area which is safety fenced and there is a separate area for younger children. Exceptional natural habitat with plenty of flora and fauna. Dipping pond. Dogs allowed off lead except in certain areas. Popular all year round. Good signposted cycle paths run through the southern park.
L. G.
Alot better now than when I lived in highwoods, my daughter loved the walk & the park thats there, will b back in the summer xx
H. A.
Love Highwoods lots of space and some lovely walks in the heart of Colchester. Our rescue dog we adopted in Spain has spent her first visit to UK with nose to the ground in this lovely place So we three give it the full five stars.
C. L.
Beautiful place accessible to all just one down side, there were many dogs with their owners but I did not see one dog waste bin but I did see lots of dog poo bags hanging on tree branches as I walked through the woods, come on colchester council get it sorted.
B. E.
Lovely place to be and the rangers and volunteers are doing a fantastic job.
J. R.
It's a lovely place to visit and take your dog for a walk. There is a fishing lake and tuck shop on site along with play areas for the kids. There are also lots of areas if you feel like a picnic. The only real drawback I found whilst walking the dog was the shortage of poo bins during the walk. The only poo bins are at the entrance which I found very frustrating having to carry the dog poo bag all the way round .
a. h.
Good parking and only £1 for 2 hours. Nice play area for the children, pleasant walks and a lake
J. G.
Went on the new year's day walk. Pretty muddy under foot in places but the park is varied and looks good despite the weather and time of year. Will try and find time to join another walk as they are scheduled for Sundays and Fridays.
B. H.
What a perk to Colchester! This is a grand park. Both nature preserve and park, it offers forest, grassland, lake, picnic and play areas. Nearly adjacent to Castle Park, the residents and guests to the area have access to a massive greenbelt. The cycle and walking paths provide a lovely area as a destination and a passthrough. I find myself in the park quite often for one reason or another. The forested areas are wonderful.
N. T.
Lovely walk with the kids. They enjoyed the park and the paths, cheap parking and clean toilets. Brilliant
A. S. H.
An ideal place to park and wait whist my companion was undergoing tests as an outpatient at Colchester Hospital just up the road - during the lockdown for Covid-19 when I was not allowed into the hospital. So instead I used the facilities of the public convenience (which I am very pleased Colchester Borough Council had open - with strong warnings about social distancing) had a quick stroll in the woods - where many were exercising pets and children on a sunny day and just got back to the hospital to greet my companion who was relieved at her visit going well.
We are blessed with great public facilities in our part of Essex and a free at the point of service hospital system which has kept me going these past seventy odd years.
It cost just £1.00 to park and I paid with my MI Permit App which had not used since before the Covid-19 emergency begun over a year ago - so it took some time as I needed to update my payment details - but hopefully it will work more easily next time
P. B.
Fantastic quiet park. Walk with or without a dog. Childrens play area is popular. Wildlife includes 30 species of butterfly and 50+ birds in the Spring.
Well worth a visit, bring binos or camera and enjoy a coffee or ice cream at the visitor centre.
D. S.
A huge public park which is perfect for dog walking! Lots of open space alongside wooded areas. Managed to fly my drone here on a quiet day over one of the fields where no one was around.
D. S.
This is just a real nice place for walks. In summer its great as theres enuff trees for shade in some areas which also protect you from rain on rainy days. Nice open areas for picnics away from the hussle an bussle or theres a picnic area near the play ground for the kids. There 3 routed walks 30/60/120mins challenging in parts especially if like me youve got a pram but managable. Scenic and sereen. A great place!
G.
This place is lovely and so relaxing but can get very muddy
V. R.
A beautiful place to take the dog and the kids
C. L.
Wonderful place to let loose the children to be children. Lots of space. Picnic area, play equipment. Can.buy a cuppa 🙂
T. l.
Nice walks among the trees
K. M.
I was there to wait for my husband to finish at the hospital and it was packed at 10am it cost me a pound for 2 hours i was ther just under an hour but it was lovely peacefull and very relaxing the walks were fabulous and the field and lake were beautiful but full of kids and famils so alittle noisy but good noise people enjoying life again tecomend you visit good for wheelchairs to just one thing could do witb few more seats along walks for people to stop sit and take it all in
S. M.
Lovely green oasis on the outskirts of town. Saved from development when the Highwoods estate was built and subsequently managed by the council as a country park. Great for locals and visitors alike, with waymarked walks, open fields, information boards, seating, small lake and a visitor centre with carpark. Cycle or walk round for a taste of the country on the edge of town.
d. ?.
Absolutely love this place. It's a toss up of here and wanstead n cant decide which ones better. Place is enormous and beautifully kept. Could only give 4 stars as at the cafe, dogs weren't allowed to sit outside with you, they had another place they had to stay and it's in a part where I was unable to see them so changed mind for using the cafe
C. B.
Fantastic country park. Great walks with lakes and hills. Park for the kids but mainly ropes and wooden frames with tyres etc but no slides. Its more of an adventure park. With climbing wall etc.
It has a little shop too. Parking isnt too expensive either.
A. C.
Amazing place! Brilliant for pushchairs, footpaths were wide and flat. Car park charges but is very reasonable. Had a lovely time.
I. S.
Very popular area with a nice mix of wooded and more open areas to walk, run or just sit and enjoy the great weather at the moment. Small areas of playing apparatus are dotted around for children closer to the turner road entrance with toilets and an info centre in the car park. I presume because of the proximity to the hospital and health centre the car park has a small charge(pay and display) but there is a free car park over the other side of the park just off of Eastwood drive if that suits you better. The park is well looked after and thankfully 99% of dog owners are responsible enough to pick up after their dogs with plenty of bins dotted around the park which keeps the area nice and clean. Great place to spend time
w. d.
A great place to take the kids as they have a play area. Can take your dogs for a walk or even go for a walk your self. If your into Geocaching there are also a good handful around the area to try and find.
S.
Beautiful location for a lovely walk.
B. M.
Lovely woodland with well constructed play area. Fishing lake at the bottom of a slope, which is a but worrying if you have young children as they run down the slope and find it difficult to stop at the bottom, especially as there is no barrier to the lake. Shame the council now charge for parking and their machines don't give change - which is theft.
G. C.
Fine places for walks etc.
Don't come here if you have a dislike of dogs, they are everywhere off the lead.
D. S.
Well signposted, nice play areas, lots of open space.
Would recommend to anyone who wants to go on a walk or has children.
S. T.
Really good place to take the kids. Just have a nice walk and picnic. Be warned no hot food or hot drinks sold. Which is a shame as there missing a trick there
K. E.
Lovely place to walk the dog and take the kids. Been here a few times. Parking charges are reasonable and lots to do
A. C.
A great park where you can wonder round fields / a lake / forest area. There are some trails if you start at the visitor centre but also lots of paths if you start at any of the other entrances.
If you park at visitor centre there is also a play park nearby for little people.
A. T.
Lovely place for a walk with the kids. Couple of nice play areas for them too.
T. R.

Love coming here with my children, all year round. The little shop has activity pack and good snacks. Also got drinks and take away cups if needed
L. H.
Good for dog walking and small children. Well defined paths to follow. Busy on Sundays particularly. Small charge for parking
D. W.
Lovely place to walk. Good paths and facilities.
Very muddy through the woods today though!
N. B.
Lovely well kept park. Great visitors centre with good selection of drinks, staff are the friendliest people ever. Good children's play area for all ages.
D. D.
Although it was raining when we visited it still was a great park with a reasonably priced car park ,visitor centre, climbing wall area and two assault courses, one toddler and the other for big kids.
Also theres a lake but we didn't see it as it started really chucking it down so we will be returning in the future
I. P.
Great place for long woodland/countryside walks, could benefit from improving the navigation signposting to find the carpark and more colour coded walking route signage along routes (very easy to veer of course and loose any sense of location and direction and walk for ages in wrong direction).
H. C.
Beautiful park, lake and wooded areas. Plenty of space. Shaded children s play area. Clean toilets.
s. 4.
Great place to take time out
E. F.

A. N. A. R.
Very good park to walk around and cheap to park (50p for two hours, £2.00 for 2+ hours, £4 all day). Only slight criticism is the shop only takes Cash only, but apart from that well worth a visit for a walk.
F. B.
Lovely park, my kids find it great. Splendid walking trail - would highly recommend it to people who like the outdoors.
S. J.
Beautiful green surroundings and lovely long walks it was a treat to see families out having fun rolling down hills in the rain rather than sat at home on computers lovely place to visit

This was pur first visit. It's probably a great place to visit with or without your children or grandchildren... but we had to cut our visit short as the cafe had been commandeered as a Polling Station.
A. W.
My kids loved it first time we went today and it was amazing will be going again soon if weather stays like today
D. T.
It's getting better and better with very well maintained paths. The setting on the lake is a beautiful retreat. A shame that you always find idiots dumping litter at times.
