Reviews of Barnwood Park and Arboretum
G.
Gorgeous! We would definitely visit again. My son was particularly taken with the small bridges on the pond, the butterfly ‘wild’ areas and the (three) Dexter Cattle 🐄 😂.
They seem to have a bit of a rat problem at the moment. Although , once again, my son was very happy to watch the rats dart from bush to bush from a distance.
A. H.
A lovely bit of green in the urban sprawl of Barnwood. It can get very muddy when it has rained but some of the paths have recently been repaired and the arboretum itself is usually not a problem. Plenty of space to run around in and always worth a visit.
G. O.
Well thought area for all ages (and dogs).
The old remnants of the Barnwood House estate have been transformed into a well managed public space.
You can walk the entire park and arboretum in about half an hour but ignore it’s size as it’s more a place to dawdle and take in the variety of the plants and features. The beautifully carved benches are fascinating too. Try and find the piano.
The ducks (actually Northern Mallards) are regular visitors to Wotton Brook that flows through here. Look out for the Coots (white beaks) and Moor Hens (red beaks) too.
The recent addition of a deliberately constructed balancing pond adds to the charm of the area. That part of the park is a real sun trap with no cooling breeze. Being low ground it also requires wellies when wet.
The old estate chapel, now deconsecrated, houses a gym so unfortunately the interior can’t be viewed but the outside is in good nick and quite photogenic.
Parking can be a challenge as the gym members use the spaces adjacent to the park in Church Lane. There’s a lay-by area across the road next to the church with free, unrestricted parking. It gets full at school drop off and pick up times due to the nearby secondary school and of course on Sundays.
E. F.
Nice family walk, play and picnic. Labeled trees to help educate children. Lovely hidden beauty in built up area. Animals to see. Have used it quite often. Friendly gym goes inside church.
L. B.
Great place for a walk, good path for wheelchairs/pushchairs. Also has a lovely meadow area next to it with a pond.
V. H.
This park is stunning.
I went there for the first to have a pick nick with work colleagues, it was very pleasant. I returned there yesterday with friends and we love it.
There is plenty of space to sit. It is a great atmosphere with trees and a pond.
There is a lovely rugby field next the pond.
There is free parking space.
j. g.
What a wonderful little park . Only small but beautiful trees 🌲
Z. A.
Absolutely beautiful place to have a quiet walk. So many different routes and if you're lucky you can sometimes see the cows roaming in the 1 section! They have also recently added wild flower and a little pond in the main section which is lovely.
F. A.
Nice place to go for a walk. Free entrance via Church Lane opposite At Lawrence Church - there may be other entrances. If you take your dog(s) there then clean up after them.
V. V.
Amazing to see the rare trees planted in early 19th century
G. M.
Stunning place to go for a stroll, simply beautiful! Lots of places for picnics to!
Limited parking but I've always managed to find a spot.
A. W.
Lovely place to visit, easy parking.
P. C.
First time I've been to Barnwood Park, had an enjoyable walk around the Park. Found a lovely spot, to sit & have a coffee, with some cookies & of course some treats for Bella.
K. L.
Beautiful and calm park. Here you can appreciate many trees species. My daughter enjoyed running around and getting her feet wet on the stream water.
A. V. G.
This is a lovely little walk for the family or nice place to go for a picnic is quiet and beautiful, there is plenty of green areas for children to play and as you can see in the pictures you can take the little ones to feed the ducks. This place is in the middle of barnwood you wouldn't believe that there are busy roads around it as it is so peaceful.
Cheap day out with family and a lovely place to take the kids to play and run etc.
M. B.
Pretty park, lots of different areas for the kids to explore, plenty of space and pushchair friendly. 👍
A. B.
A lovely flat walk. Some fabulously carved benches as well as traditional ones. There is a stream running through the grounds which dogs paddle in.
O. P.
Beautiful park with easy access via car or foot, lovely place for walk
E. B.
Enjoyed my time walking around, lots to see! Definitely recommend a visit 😊
M. C.
A really pleasant place to blow away the cobwebs without going to far if you are local to Gloucester. Usually parking is available in the lay-by by the entrance near the Church.
V. T.
Lovely relaxing place to walk around , on your own , with children or dogs
J. B.
Brilliant little hidden gem. We have lived locally for many years and never knew this place existed. Lovely little place for a short walk, and some very friendly animals for the children to pet.
M. O.
This place stands out precisely because it doesn't. There are people that live very near in barnwood, coney hill and the abbeys that have no idea it's even there.
I should probably have learned more of the history of the place before writing this, alas I can only comment on what I have seen. Massive and old trees, some interesting carvings, a stream with resident wildlife, an abandoned old church, which perhaps to the displeasure of some has been converted into a gymn. Not a national/multinational chain, an independent and proper weight lifting gymn from what I can tell. Looks like the building needs some up keep.
I'd definitely recommend the arboretum for locals, it is an arboretum and it's nearby, that's quite a thing! I wouldn't suggest people travel from afar as it may be an anticlimax unless they have a specialist interest in the trees or any niche wildlife that may be there.
I'll give it 4/5 as it makes my new/old neighbourhood a much more interesting and desirable place.
K. B.
A lovely place in the middle of Barnwood which didn't know existed even though only live in Hardwicke a couple of miles away.
T. C.
Lovely gem of a place to explore with the kids or pets, or even just a quiet stroll on your own.
R. J.
Very good to walk round, nice to see some of the trees with labels, which helps people identify them.
N. W.
Really nice area to stroll around in the sun and the kids loved the wildlife and carvings
R. L.
It was pleasant to have a walk around and to have seen the Church of Pain 😂
A good green area for the locals to walk the dog and cycle for a bit
j. s.
Generally very well kept not sure I am keen on the rats though!
S. t. t.
Brilliant place for all ages shame they don't keep dogs on their leads. Not all children like then.
D. N.
Lovely pocket of love peace and niceness in the city.
Excellent place for a c-app picture
J. G.
Love taking photographs of landscape:)
L. v. S.
Must say the parks, street etc is well maintained
Also u can sit & relax in the park without being disturbed
W. S.
I have lived here for nearly 18 months and only just discovered this gem of a place today. Great for walking the dog, lots of places to explore and very well maintained. Will definitely be back!
M. C.
Lovely place for a stroll... Take some food for the ducks!
A. E.
Went for a stroll beautiful place good to.see the snowdrops
H. P.
A very nice place to go for a walk if you don’t want to be walking too far and you only want a small walk nice to see nature animals like ducks for example
R. W.
Beautiful place nice walk makes you happy to be alive with what is going on in the world. Worth a look
A.
Many plants. I like plants. There are no disadvantages.
A. J.
The sign on the gate says closed at 7pm. Gates still open gone 8pm. A little confusing
T. C.
Whilst visiting family in huccelcote we went for a Saturday afternoon stroll very pretty and peaceful shall be returning again on my next visit ❤️
D. L.
So fortunate to have this space so close.
R.
Free. Went for a morning walk here, sound of the birds chirping was relaxing.
Parking is available on the lay by road outside, didn't see any public toilets though. It is wheelchair accessible.
I have added some photos for you to assess the site accessibility.
There is a cafe nearby within 10 mins walk. Hope my review is helpful.
A. M.
It was so beautiful. With the tree leaves turning rustic and the arboretum just makes me smile as I'm walking round with my dog. Love it there.
g. “.
Great looking local place for a walk or to have a picknic. There aren't any facilities to use the loo but there's a café which is there Wednesday through to the weekend I believe. Delicious pastries and coffee! Would recommend a visit.
J. N.
Always love spending time here. Even more so now Myra's has a pitch there and a hot drink in the rain or a cold drink in the heat can be enjoyed, together with maybe a little treat to eat !!
S.
Hidden gem of a park in Gloucester with lots of places to sit quietly and enjoy the space. Great for walking the dogs and when we visited there was a coffee van which is always a bonus!
S. i. M.
Beautiful, serene and peaceful, a lovely location for walks and family time!
A. C.
A gloriously peaceful place to enjoy a walk and watch the world go by.
Ample space for everyone from families looking for a place to picnic to runners who want to enjoy the scenery to even just couples who fancy a scenic walk.
M. W.
We've visited here a number of times and it's a pleasant place to be. Lovely sunshine made it even better today! A nice area to wander around, today with the grandchildren, and enjoy nature. Worth a visit
M. K.
A gorgeous place to visit, my dog and wife love to go for walks here, very well maintained and just such a lovely park in the suburbs of the area
j. b.
Lovely little park. So tranquil even though it is surrounded by houses. Wood sculptures, stream and squirrels. Also as it's an arboretum a good selection of different trees. Well worth a visit. Limited parking on all sides.
Y. C.
Well kept and interesting, must be lovely in spring, even at New Year there was a cheering amount of bird song. A bit muddy, not surprisingly!
C. J.
Lovely place for dog walks ...
c. m.
How lucky we are 😁such a lovely place to walk sit and spend time with the family 👍😁
T. K.
Great place to take kids very relaxing environment
C. J.
Great place for a walk but if you have a dog keep them out if the water. Most of it is very muddy and thei come it black. I hadn't been there so I didn't realize there was water and I definitely didn't know it was so muddy places. There's a big field in the back behind and to the right of the church which is great for throwing your dog's ball and keeping them away from the water and the ducks.
m. j.
Was very pleasant..never been before. Lovely walk and wildlife..ideal for walking the dog and relaxing...breathing in the fresh air and looking at the wildlife
M. G.
Absolutely beautiful, peaceful arboretum with lots to see and explore, particularly with my grandchildren. Well done Friends of Barnwood Park for keeping this park so beautiful
L. A.
Perfect for a short walk. We walked a dog around a newly laid bark path in the rain and came off relatively unscathed. Plenty of water birds and squirrels.
J. P.
A good job well done, looks beautiful. A very pleasant place to walk, sit and enjoy the trees and meadow flowers.
A. K.
It's nice for what it is - a place for locals to walk their dogs.
The church being a gym was a surprise. Pleasant but not a tourist spot, nice to walk in if you live there.
B. R.
Such a lovely place to walk with the dogs. Nice see they are building a balancing pond with wildlife and wildflower Meadows happening..
G. S.
Nice place to walk the dogs between the trees and by the stream. A bit muddy if it has recently rained but plenty of space to breathe in the fresh air between Barnwood, Abbeymead and Hucclecote
W. 6.
Lovely place to walk with the kiddies, the dog, stroll with the loved one or all three 😆
D. B.
Great little walk round. Can't wait to go back in the spring!
a. t.
Beautiful area for walks, running and exercise. Plenty of areas to sit and relax amongst many different trees. Lovely tosee autumn colours and magical in spring. Sometimes sheep are grazing in a few areas so does restrict dog walkers a bit. Nice little brook prone to flooding and seems to attract alot of litter sadly.
R. P.
Lovely relaxing place to go on a walk with the dog, or with little ones, due to the large pond, ducks etc.
R. B.
Lovely little park. There is a footpath on one side of the stream. Here there are wildflowers in the summer and loads of leaves to kick through with the children. There are decoratively carved trees. There is a wider area of the stream where ducka congregate. A bridge leads over the stream to the lovely wild arboretum. Overgrown pathways are a lovely adventure for our little ones. A great (free!) couple of hours can easily be spent here.
w. b.
Cool trees
D. K.
A really nice pleasant walk in all seasons.
M. D.
Nice small park for the locals really, lots of signs saying don't feed the ducks this and that, don't leave seed lying around etc. At the end of the day it's a park, you will not stop rats it's impossible! Bizarrely the old church is now a 'gym!! Bit odd. Done it now but won't come back. Never mind onto the next one.
C. B.
Nice morning out with friends, a long overdue catching up.
Tea/coffee van as well so very handy!
J. B.
Now a quite walk and nature reserve. It once formed the gardens for Gloucester's Private Mental Health Hospital that closed in the 1960's. Nice place to walk and pick out bits from the past.
R. S.
What a hidden gem in Gloucester! A great place to bring the kids for a game of hide and seek. Even better if you love trees. Remember to bring duck food to feed the ducks - no bread please!
S. H.
A most beautiful oasis of peace. So wonderfully maintained.
J. H.
A lovely, tranquil and relaxed park, popular with dog walkers and those wanting to eat lunch on a bench and take in the relaxing atmosphere. Plus it's popular with Pokémon Go players, with the dense population of gyms and stops!
T. K.
Very small, but lovely natural little arboretum, accessed by a wooden bridge over a stream full of ducks. Things to see there are grey squirrels and a few sheep besides the trees.
R. F. B.
A lovey cool spot on a hot day very nice and with my muscle i push wheelchair around it not too bad
L. S.
Lovely flat walk for our older people
L. N.

R. L.
A great little walk for all the family spend 20 minutes or a couple of hour's time well spent

w. o.
Go there weekly great place for walking, cycling, feeding ducks, and picnic. Wish they had a rule keeping dogs on leads, they frighten children and chase squirrels etc. Not everyone is respectful of others
G. P.
Great place to relax and walk the dogs lots of friendly dogs around as well and loads of shade to keep the dogs cool big stream of water dogs loved jumping in and out
C. P.
