Reviews of Saint Pancras Gardens
s. m.
Lovely little church that looks Anglo Saxo. The churchyard has some fab historic artifacts. We'll worth a visit
S. O.
Nicely laid out Church Yard in the grounds of Old St Pancras Church, containing the Tomb of Sir John Soane!
M. M.
A cosy and suggestive Garden very close to the Stations of St Pancras and King's Cross. It is a small green area, peaceful and quiet where you can breathe an unbend air, you can enjoy the silence, despite it is one step away from the road, and be surrounded by nature under the branches of its trees. An ancient space, full of atmosphere, in which it is worth passing by, before plunging back into the new modernity of the sourraunding area. Enchanting!
M. A.
Such a great peaceful place to sit, relax and surprisingly enjoy quiet life. Church is also a little gem with lots of history.
D. R.
Not a bad spot to while away a little time before a (probably delayed) train. The Hardy Tree is worth a look (if you like trees and/or gravestones and/or Thomas Hardy), and there's the grave of some noteworthy pioneering feminist lass from the past that feminist lasses from the present sometimes leave daffadolis on, apparently. The church sells candles for 20p.
M. H.
Lovely place, enjoyed seeing the wild parrots. Had read about tame squirrels but didn't see any.
S. B.
It is a beautiful, quiet and picturesque garden with many interesting historical monuments and stories.
A. M.
As a London history buff and in particular old church graveyards this is easily my favourite! The church is still operational and had been standing since the 4th Century, there is so much history buried (excuse the pun) in this churchyard. Including the famous Hardy tree, short walk from kings Cross station, Camley street nature reserve and Regents Cannel. There is so much to do and see in this area
O. L.
Very nice place with an old church and the Hardy Tree. And gorgeous gates.
S. P.
Looked up this place on maps as it looked close to the gasholder park. After a short walk, we reached this tranquil place. It apparently has seen a lot of changes due to the railway modernisation in the area over time. It's the resting place for quite a few famous personalities of the past and some of the graves are pretty impressive in their architecture and history they house. The pile of headstones surrounding the Hardy Tree, the Soane Mausoleum and the beautiful little church in the corner need special mention. The graves are pretty spaced out and not like what you see in Brompton cemetery. The garden is well maintained with benches along the walkway. The church is peaceful and we sat there for a while praying and admiring the architecture. You can write the name of a departed soul on a piece of paper for a prayer for them and light a candle.
The garden is a good place for dog walkers and for people to sit among the majestic trees and relax.
M. J. H. (.
Some interesting famous people are buried there.
M. P.
Beautiful and tranquil gardens
A. A.
Beautiful tranquil place that offers the visitor a place to think and reconnect with the inner self.
Some of the graves are beautifully taken care off.
You can actually hear the birds sing is worth a visit and don't forget to look out for the Thomas Hardy tree.
J. S.
Interesting place. Beatles had a photo shoot here for Hey Jude song. Lots of grave stones, the Hardy tree and a lovely chapel some parts of it from the 4th century.
D. D. R.
Cute little park with a church and tomb stones. Nice for a rest and some fresh air if the weather is alright.
A. H.
Only discovered this place a week ago. Something magical about the church and the grounds (and I'm not religious at all). Many well known people buried here and some fascinating facts. Definitely worth a visit and a wander.
B. G.
Stunning place!
Mysterious atmosphere
Beautiful garden
T. R. J. (.
Nice and peaceful spot by the church. Basically an old graveyard where most burial stones been removed and only the big ones survived.
I just like to sit on a bench when I go there.
D. a. D. T.
A must to go to for some peace in the centre of London, a 5 min walk from kings Cross, yet could be in the middle of nowhere, it was so quite
M. J. B.
Beautiful and relaxing place in the grounds of St. Pancras Old Church reputed to be the eldest in the country. Lots of famous people have been buried here or have connections to it. Lots of info on Google or in historical or lost rivers guide books.
J. F.
During a brief visit over the Easter weekend we found this area pleasantly underpopulated. It was a cool/grey afternoon though. The crowd was along the canal nearby, and in Coal Drop Yard more generally.
C.
A haven of peace and tranquillity in the midst of rat-race London with historical monuments such as the Soane’s Mausoleum where the iconic red phone box design comes from 🤓
D.
Beautiful and you can take pics where The Beatles posed in 1968.
k. D.
Secluded shady spot, perfect for a picnic
J. H.
Nice little spot to relax for a few moments in Camden. An essential stop on a Mad Day Out
A. G.
This a very quiet gardens with a lot of historical objects. St Pancras Gardens were formerly the graveyard of the old St Pancras Church, the core of which dates back to the 11c. The gardens were opened to the public in 1891. There are many interesting features, including the extravagant Burdett-Coutts memorial sundial. The gardens were restored in recent years.
J. A.
Beautiful flower decorations and very clean. A tranquil environment with many trees to read under:)
E. S.
I had no idea that Bach's son was buried here.
T. C.
Lovely setting.
R. M.
Beautiful park and gardens with plenty of local history
J. C.
Before my vist to Camden Nice and peaceful Gardens taking pictures testing out my Huawei P30 Pro
A. A.
Incredibly beautiful, peaceful and serene plot of greenery in central London. Exhibits several quirky features, including a tree which is slowly devouring headstones grouped round its trunk.
G. C.
Quiet historic church yard. Nice place for a lunchtime stroll.
A. S.
Lovely quiet place, church always open.
K. B.
Interesting old cemetery which includes the famous Hardy tree.
A. Z.
Peaceful small garden - love to pass by a have a quiet time for yourself
A. A.
A nice calm space in what is a very busy part of London.o
M. B.
I've passed by it umpteen times. Well worth visiting
B. C.
Beautiful place to relax for a moment
F. G.
Interesting place and guide was very friendly and helpful
K. D.
Very peaceful, tranquillity in the middle of hustle and bustle
S. B.
Imagine a time when the Fleet River passed in front, see gravestones embedded in a tree, put there by Thomas Hardy, the iconic mausoleum of the architect, Sir John Soane, the graves of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin all in an atmospheric, evocative space far from the hustle and bustle of nearby King's Cross.
S. G.
Lovely green space with many tall, leafy trees
E.
Peaceful little park to spend some time whilst waiting for a train. About a 15 min slow paced walk from kings cross station
R. L.
It's an old cemetery that has a wonderfully peaceful ambiance. Dog walkers mix with those just wanting to escape from the madness for a few moments. Lots of old trees give shade on a sunny day and ample benches make light work of tired feet. One of my favourite green spaces in the area. I just hope that it doesn't get too busy now.! ...
J. H.
It's a really nice spot, with some wonderful history on display. It's the site of the oldest Christian place of worship in London (early in the 4th Century)
There are useful information boards in the Gardens, which help you understand what you're seeing.
P. L.
I rate 5 star because this is such a gem that you don't realise is there. The church yard has a connection to Thomas Hardy. There is an Ash tree with grave stones around the base that he created and is worth travelling to see.
p. p.
Architects, if you are passing pay a visit to Sir John Soane's Mausoleum. Cemeteries were once a unique place for quiet contemplation where dearly departed rested in peace, the tranquility of this cemetery is now disturbed by personal trainers, their clients and party goers.
D. H.
Mary Wollstonecraft and the guy who designed the first telephone box are buried there. Some scenes from the Beatles' film - A Hard Day's Night were shot there. Never touristy. Quiet. A nice place to eat lunch outside in the Summer.
J. J.
Very peaceful and tranquil...a nice spot to gather your thoughts
D. G.
MINDFULNESS TAPES could have been recorded here.
The breeze whispering through the leaves. The sun dappled grass and benches
Just lovely in the warmer seasons. Lots of seating. Water available for dogs (or anyone who wants to get down on all fours) Spacious and quiet. Not a park for chasing around with cycles. Mother's (or father's) with pushers can relax with a dozing infant.
There is a very large tree with seating that almost surrounds it. Reminds me of a banyan tree in Sanur, Bali.
Tranquil.
N.
Nice little cemetery with a really special tree, the hardy tree
P. L.
An oasis of quiet near pancreas station.
D. A.
Very quiet, nice little park
M. M.
Full of history. Research before visiting to appreciate in full. Was the Soane mausoleum really the inspiration for the design of the British telephone box? Can you find any trace of the river Fleet?
L. S.
Lovely spot - looks like you are not in Kings cross anymore
H. W.
This is a lovely little place where the Beatles were one famously photographed. It's the perfect place to go before dealing with the masses at St Pancras International Railway Station.
A. K.
Good 👍place great atmosphere family 👪friendly 👍👌😀place COVID-19 friendly place 😀 ticks all the boxes 📦😀👍
B. L.
A breath of fresh air in St. Pancras. An ancient church, a monument, ancient graves and a tree planted by Thomas Hardy; there's plenty to see in this small park/churchyard.
Well worth seeing: the monument with it's owners loyal dogs, the bench where the Beatles sat, the Soames mausoleum (inspiration for the classic red phone box). Also, the grave of a survivor of the black hole of Calcutta, the tree planted by Thomas Hardy that envelops a pile of gravestones, and the grave of Mary Shelley's relatives. It's a (relatively) quiet place all year round, and always worth a visit.
S. I.
Very nice gardens
H. I.
Lovely place with an old church, Sir John Sloane's mausoleum, grave of Bach's son, Hardy's tree and a bench where the Beatles sat. Well worth visiting if you need to stop and rest your mind in busy London.
M. I.
St Pancras Old Church is a Church of England parish church in Somers Town, Central London. It is dedicated to the Roman martyr Saint Pancras, and is believed by many to be one of the oldest sites of Christian worship in England. The church is situated on Pancras Road in the London Borough of Camden, with the surrounding area and its international railway station taking its name. St Pancras Old Church, which was largely rebuilt in the Victorian era, should not be confused with St Pancras New Church (1819–1822) about 860 metres (940 yd) away, on Euston Road.
S. S.
If Harry Potter is not your thing, and you want to spend an enjoyable and informative hour within a few minutes walk of St Pancras, a visit to the old church and its park is highly recommended. The church itself is probably more interesting to look at from the outside as the interior is rather drab. The current 1847 building restored the medieval church, although its origins can be traced back to Saxon and Roman times. The graveyard next door, which has been converted into a small park, is full of historic and cultural interest. Amongst the famous people buried or commemorated here are Johann Christian Bach (youngest son of JSB), Mary Wollstonecraft, the writer and advocate of women's rights, and John Soane who designed a splendid tomb for himself and his wife which was the inspiration for Giles Gilbert Scott for his iconic design of the British red telephone box. Coincidentally, he was the grandson of Sir George Gilbert Scott, who was the architect for the famous hotel at St Pancras station. The Hardy Tree, surrounded by old gravestones, is a testament to the time the novelist Thomas Hardy worked here in the 1860s, excavating parts of the churchyard and moving graves in order to accommodate the construction of the Midland Railway's new terminus. The green space here is dark, because of the shade of the tall trees, so it is not really a place to linger but it certainly has lots of significance and is well worth a visit.
P. G.
Lovely quiet gardens, for a stroll, right in the centre of London
L. F.
A quiet space in the hub bub of Kings Cross...beautiful little chapel and nice place to sit with your coffee and sandwich.
B. S.
Beautiful little park. Quiet, ancient. Interesting buildings. Some unusual formations of tombstones. Fun for the whole family.
j. b.
Mystical and melancholic mound shrouded in a disquieting and unsettled atmosphere. Amongst these relics you find respite from the manic Kings Cross and St. Pancras travel hubs.
Here amidst the gravestones and monuments lies London's ancient heartland where the historical associations and their reverberations redound through the ages.
'The Hardy Yew Tree', listed amongst London's 20 most important trees; a potent and portent evocation of human transience.
Memorable and indelible.
N. W.
Bit of Beatles history, and a quiet oasis to relax
K. D.

D. G.
Beautiful and so vintage moment...good to see how the place still hold memories of 100 years more
L. E.
Beautiful area in London!
M. J.
Another of London's hidden gems. This park and former cemetery has the Hardy Tree, a yew tree planted a 160 years ago by Thomas Hardy as a central point for headstones removed by the expansion of King's Cross railway station. The yew tree has now grown and is swallowing up the circle of headstones.
The churchyard also contains the memorial stone to Mary Wollstonecraft where her daughter Mary (Frankenstein author) would sit and where she first met Percy Bysshe Shelley.
There is a Grade 1 Listed tomb, (only one other Grade 1 Listed tomb exists and that is in Highgate cemetery, The Marx Memorial) designed by Sir John Soane. This was Sir Giles Gilbert-Scott's inspiration for the design of the iconic telephone box.
Also worth seeing is the Burdett-Courts memorial to lost graves. The lost graves are those that the expansion of the railway destroyed.
There are links here to Dickens and Flaxman, worth going to the wiki page to explore further.
G. D.

(Translated) If you are looking for peace, is right here.
Only a few hundred meters away from the murderous race of allegedly true life, remembering the original purpose of the park (cemetery), you can become very aware of how transient is currently our so meager life and how little you can take in the end ,
It is worth reading the excerpt of the words from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5) on the side of the stele facing the entrance, and pondering on it in peace and quiet.
