Reviews of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park
C. B.
My favourite place in London to go, a real gem in the middle of busy east London. Summary: dog friendly, family friendly, no toilets.
A quiet place about 5 minutes from Mile End or Bow Road. Very dog friendly, family friendly, with main gravel paths circling the park but smaller dirt paths to explore in between. Plenty of open spaces amongst the trees, and lots of surprises on the way; wooden seating areas tucked amongst the trees, tree stumps, wooden ‘huts’, wildlife galore, cute dogs. Oh, and plenty of gravestones!
The gravestones line the paths but it doesn’t feel eerie; strangely peaceful, and a great place for a summer amble or a winter dog walk. Absolutely brilliant for connecting with dog owners. Plenty of dog poo bins and benches and I’ve never not found somewhere to sit. Very little litter too. Events held here often; The summer festival is fab and there are frequent local history tours. The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park do a phenomenal job looking after the park and showcasing wildlife and nature trails, and putting on activities on a regular basis.
Do note in case you are caught short: no public toilets.

Fantastic place for a quiet walk. Came with my friend and her dog and really enjoyed it. Would happily come back and definitely recommend anyone who wants a break from busy life.

My secret garden. I often come for a walk since I found this place. You can see wild flowers everywhere, winding paths, full of scenery, birds makes musical sound...
peaceful, just love it.
S. S.
Love this place! It has wild garlic. My second favourite cemetery after the one in Stoke Newington. Less busy also.
J. T.
East London's version of 'Highgate'. A real hidden gem, great place to explore, beautiful old graves and wildlife. I found some beautiful shrooms... just watch out for dog poo!!
d.
Very interesting green space in East London, doubling as a cemetery.
I visited whilst an event was running and it is a very nice area however it is very muddy in parts so be careful when walking around and use adequate footwear
Close to District and Hammersmith & City Lines

A lovely place to visit, especially with friends and family. So much nature and wildlife to enjoy. It's also a perfect place to read a book as it's so quiet. One thing, it's so big you will probably get lost ;)
M. N.
i went to this park today. really love it. little sad thing is i found the ground is not that well for training. but it's suitable for slow running. really like this beautiful place

Stunning!
A scheduled spot behind some estates that’s filled with life ( even tho it’s a cemetery ). Plant life is great, birds and other critters.
Some very interesting graves and the condition of them is interesting too.
The people who look after it are lovely too and they are very passionate about it. You can also volunteer.
Great fresh air Amongst the dense trees and not too many people getting drunk/doing drugs

Gorgeous little gem in East London! It was so peaceful and green there that we almost forgot we were in London. Lots of birds, wildflowers and wild garlic turn it into a must-visit in spring. Put your adventure hat on and explore the plentiful winding paths. Will definitely be visiting again!
B. W.
Contacted the cemetery by email in the hope that they might be able to locate my grand uncle's grave.
They replied very quickly and suggested I make an appointment and someone would assist me.
I visited the cemetery today and was met by a lovely lady, Claire, who kindly took me to the grave. She was so helpful and told me about the history of the cemetery.
I am so grateful for the help given and with the service I received. I could never have found the grave myself.
Many thanks again.
K. H.
A bit of rest and haven. You get to see the graves of so many that passed over. You can pray, meditate, walk, sit, think, rest, breath, run, walk, or bike ride. This woodland reminds you of death and makes you thankful for life. Have your packed lunch in a wildflower meadow. I would recommend it. But please respect the dead, and keep the place clean and undamaged. Volunteer and learn something new.
D. S.
Soanes Centre and Friends of THCP do a fantastic job -always friendly- unpaid volunteers maintain a haven for wildlife and a resource for schools and anyone interested in history

I ove this place, suddnely you seem to be so far away from the civilization, It's like 1 minute walk away form my house and yet it took me 1 year to realize it was there. Amazing place
B.
This was the last of the "magnificent seven" Victorian cemeteries I had intended to visit. Such an amazingly beautiful and tranquil place to spend a few hours. One of those places where the hussle and bustle of the city stops and it feels like you are in a different place and time. Cant recommend a visit highly enough.
T.
Early morning walks through this very unique oasis are a real treat! For those of us that live and work in London, it is so important to have these spaces.
This Cemetery park is a real delight. With so many pathways through the park, you can truly indulge on nature as it is intended.
M. M.
Lovely place to visit and to relax. The atmosphere is quite chilling, everything’s well kept after. This place haunts you, it makes you think. It is just amazing. It is also a great place to stroll about. I was living nearby for a while but if you’re a tourist just give it a go, you will not regret it.

Officially once known as the City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. It was opened in 1842. By 1889 it already contained around 250,000 bodies, most of them cholera victims.
It is a hauntingly beautiful cemetery with a number of avenues lined with beautiful and historic graves/gravestones. In the summer the cemetery is deliciously lush with greenery and wildlife. I totally loved the vibes there.
H. C.
What a great place to visit, especially in a sunny day. Super peaceful and excelent for jogging and dog walking as well as a nice stroll. The place is huge and well kept. All the graves arent a creepy element to it, but they sort if become almost sculptural amongst the big trees and leafy bushes.
R. B. -. E. k.
Quite nice but a some of the dog walkers did not have much respect for the graves with their dogs weeing over the plots
Need more time to have a look around but not on my "to do" list right now
T. J.
An unconventional cemetery, but it has the trademark eerie feeling!
C. J.
Oasis of calm. Was a lovely place to get some fresh air and get away from the noise of London. The park is safe and clean and people are friendly and polite. Dogs are allowed to roam free and so are the people!
B. G.
Great place for walking and enjoying beautiful seroundings
C. O.
Wow ,the history, the wide life,go there .you will have a lovely time, dog, kids too
A. A.
Nice spot for a casual walk through during a sunny spring day.
J. S.
Crispy dreams, tasty aubergine...oh wait that's the Natura italian pizzeria, go there! The grave yard is a serene green wonderland, go there too!
C. A.
Of all London's Victorian cemeteries Tower Hamlets is the wildest and most overlooked. Tightly packed with faded headstones and broken tombs it's long past its zombie prime. But it's now living a new life as a wild park as trees and wildflowers take over the show.
M. T.
Love this place. Ideal for a quiet wander through the trails.

Stumbled upon this special and secret gem, full of history and wild and trees and paths and reflection. A few homeless live there too.

I am writing another review because I have looked at some negative reviews and would like to address some remarks. This is a safe place, I have been coming here nearly every day for fourteen years now day and evening and never experienced or heard of any problems. It is certainly not creepy or scary and if someone was robbed it must have been an isolated incident. This park offers everything one could want in every season of the year. I never tire of this place, I've met people who have become friends and many more who smile and wave. I see many mothers with babies and young children who enjoy the park and during school holidays the Forest School is a must for children to experience the wonders of the park. My thanks to the Manager and the lovely volunteers without whom the park would go back to its overgrown state that it was before the Friends of the Park took over management of the park. Also look out for the regular events from history to bat walks, there really is something for everyone.
P. A.
Great place to go for a walk and to enjoy nature. All the graves make it interesting for a history lesson. If you can book a guide even better
J. B.
Lovely place for a walk. Lots of wild flowers in the woodland areas, and honey bees are kept in the northern part of the park. Went here for the first time to get some pictures of a family dog in a nice setting, and it didn't fail to deliver great outdoor pictures.
D. J.
If you ever need a location for a horror or zombie movie thats the right place for you.Lots of old grave stones full of moss with nearby paths which look like a forest.
S. B.
if you want some quite and peace near Mile End tube station, head down south via southern grove road and Tower hamlet cemetery park would be at our left. They host a number of community nature workshops. You might encounter things that suddenly cross your path... don't worry that wont be a ghost :P just little city fox or a rabbit. Quite safe. closes by dusk.
M. C.
Though not as alluring as some of the other "Magnificent Seven" cemeteries of London, this one is still worth a visit. I don't know how to put this without sounding morbid but there's more "space" here than the other ones we've been to so at times it does feel more like a park than a cemetery. Don't be surprised to find runners jogging through or parents taking their toddlers for a stroll.
A. C.
It's great that there are people who devote their time and effort to preserving history and biodiversity in the heart of London. More people should know about this place and get involved. Coming here among the sense-pleasing myriad of sights and sounds is the ultimate relaxation.
J. A. S. M.
The premises are absolutely fab. Great place to exercise and take your pet for a walk. I applaude the extraordinary work that volunteers and premises staff undertake to keep the cementery in great conditions. If I may add, shame on the pet owners that take their dogs for walks and do not bother to pick up after their pets. I have seen several dog owners (Two ladies... one with a boxer dog and a black mix lab) that allow their animals to poop and don't bother picking after them. I recall staring at them and eventhough they knew I was watching, they acted as it is was alright. As a community, lets help out by trying to keep this park clean and tidy. We all use it! Lets do our part!.
R. C.
A really amazing and atmospheric cemetery park. Reading the headstones that date back so far gives a real insight into bygone days. Some would have been truly heart breaking for those involved where you can see the fragility of life in Victorian times. This is contrasted by the opulence of those gravesend of the wealthy. Ultimately now laying side by side in the same sod.
H. C.
Very nice park/cemitery, could have more people taking care of because now it looks kind of abandoned, but it's good for a run or to chill a bit
N. R.
One of the lesser known cemetery parks in London.
A great place to spend half an hour walking around the various plots in different states of decay.
Look out for the horse & carriage turning path on the NE corner.
G. T.
Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park offers tours on the third Sunday of the month starts at 2 pm at the Soanes Center and there was a tour this afternoon as it was the third Sunday of November the theme of the tour was the history of the Cemetery Park of you can get a chance I would recommend it.
I. U.
I had so many walks there when I was living in London. It is always quiet, good for families with kids.
m. M.
Brilliant place to go for a jog peaceful and full of history.
yes There are muggers in here but there’s also nuggets in every other parks In London, that’s just the life in London.
M. H.
This is a beautiful hidden east london gem. As London's most urban woodland and a local nature reserve it is definitely worth a visit. Don't miss out. Great events all year round.
P. F.
The Cemetery Park is unique in London. I really enjoy the variety of East London history, sounds and atmosphere. I am a member of the Friends of the Cemetery Park and encourage anybody who values the Park to become a member as well to show your support.
J. B.

A beautiful, peaceful, secluded nature reserve in east London. This location is nice to visit during any season, and especially poignant given its former use.

It's not the most atmoshperic out of the 7 Great Graveyards but still, the way it's tucked away behind backyards and lanes, makes it worth visiting

(Translated) As magnificent as it was frightening, practically only I was present in a suburban area of London at 9 am. I certainly didn't enter the main entrance (I didn't even know where it was) since I entered a secondary gate after passing under an overpass.
I thought I had the wrong place because at the beginning it seemed to have entered a dense forest with a narrow path where there was not even a shadow of a person or a tombstone ... then the first people alone or in pairs who ran, walked and the first gravestones that multiply both to the right and to the left of the path in a surreal way.
What reigns is silence and uncontested nature, it seems almost left to itself abandoned and yet it seems that it is maintained by an association.
Magnificent, terrifying, definitely worth seeing but accompanied!
(Original)

(Translated) I spent some time living in Swaton Rd, a little street very close to this beautiful park, it personally transmits me relax, I used to spend very often for it and I always stopped for a while, to smoke a cigarette and disconnect from the stressful London

Estuve un tiempo viviendo en Swaton Rd una callecita muy cercana a este precioso parque, personalmente me transmite relax, solía pasar muy amenudo por el y siempre me paraba un rato, para fumarme un cigarrillo y desconectar de la estresante Londres

(Translated) Park that is on a cemetery which is worthy of starring in a scary movie. The vegetation is very abundant of trees and shrubs that grow among the thousands of tombstones that have been concentrated there since the 1800s. Despite being in the same city of London there comes a silence broken only by birds and owls. A unique experience.
