Reviews of Clayton Vale
S. G.
It is a beautiful place for walking biking. Walking dogs, it will be better in the summers. My advice go there
h. g.
What a great spot to do some easy mountain biking in the heart of Manchester
It's not too big although it has several trails to take, red is the trickier one of them all but it is still doable by a competent novice.
It's very popular with dog walkers who travel in herds
It's a great place to picnic near the brook that runs through the park. If you just want to amble along watching the wildlife well it would be a fine spot to do that too.
C. A.
Great place to spend time walking, jogging, bike riding or just relaxing. For kids or adults. Paddle and play in the river. Picnic areas and a cafe available. Easy to get to from any direction. Clean and well looked after.
C. M.
A fantastic place for a peaceful walk. Lots of different paths and trails to follow.
T. B. H.
Having been here before a few years ago, it was nice to find that the mtb trails were still in use. However, they have been fairly run down with little or no maintenance in ages so it proved quite a bumpy ride with obstacles (mainly trees) strewn along its path from recent storms. I'd really like to see this place become a great mtb trail once again!
P. W.
Lovely walk or you could ride your bike for beginners or harder paths for more experienced cyclist. Walk at dusk and watch the wild rabbits chasing each other
G. M.
Great little Mtb Park.. Has mainly novice and beginners trails. There are one or two advanced trails. Only downside was thay the trails were made with big rubble and its a bumpy ride. Ample walking tracks also in the park. Lots of parking around on street if none in the car park. We parked our LWB van.
D. L.
Just a short drive from where I live is a beautiful hidden gem of a place so peaceful quiet so beautiful you can walk around here for hours so many different paths to take a nice stream running through beautiful walk for me and my dogs recommend it to anybody well worth it loved it
S. C.
Highly recommend this place! It feels like a different world to the streets around it. Great to explore with children.
J. W.
Big space with ponds and bike track. Sturdy benches and bins. River with paddling possibilities. Great trip
J. K.
Great place to walk my dog. Big footpath to walk right around the river. It has a decent bike trike aswell all through the hills and trees around the river in the middle.
J. M.
Absolutely love this place, such a great outdoor space for walks with your dog, lots of mature woodland & also park area. Highly recommend.
D. R.
Lush surroundings, great trails for walking and biking, and dogs will love it. It's just a shame there are huge, unsightly power pylons marring the view at times, and that there's rubbish that residents have dumped near the entrances that hasn't been cleared up.
R. B. M.
It such a beautiful place with outstanding view of nature., you can go there for cycling, taking a walk or just to go and relax your mind by enjoying what the nature has to offer., I highly recommend this once for everyone
C. H.
Wasn't that impressed with the trails or the little pump/skills track. Tried riding the blue but got lost looking for the blue signs, didn't see a single one after the start. The pump tracks were OK but alot smaller than the pictures show
n. w.
I'm a border collie and I went to CV this morning. It's great - trees, the river. I met a beagle called Bagel and we did a lot of running around. I hope you go and have a great time - Love from Barney sheepdog from Bury xx
J. L.
Great place for a walk with the dog or take the kids, take the bikes it has bike tracks to use, also take a drink as there is no shops near by
M. M.
This little gem of nature and greenery is hidden away in Droylsden and a lot bigger than you'd expect. Makes for a peaceful walk with some great views and there's some cool looking Mountain Bike Trails that I'm definitely gonna bring my bike for next time.
D. P.
Really nice place to spend a few hours walking around the park
l.
Amazing place! I take my dog most mornings, I go early when there's hardly anybody on as my dog is a bit on the temperamental side.
Love the wildlife (Rabbits, deer, foxes, birds) and the green scenery.
A. P.
Great place to walk the dog or even just go for a wander. Plenty of paths and fields to go through and the Mersey runs through. Several places to enter or exit too.
W. S.
Lovely quiet strip of green and water but a little hemmed in so can feel a bit small for a vale. In the summer it's blooming with life carpets of lush green vegetation in the winter it's mucky muddy and smells of slightly rotten compost.
W. F.
Had a blast of a time. The place felt well looked after. Some nice small down hills and berms. But the rest is mostly just fire roads.
M. R.
When it is sunny it is very peaceful but when it has rained put your wellies on 😂🙈
Nice park to go for a walk with the dog....
E. N. J. C.
Great for a dog walk, plenty of open spaces for them to run and paths to walk on to stay clean :)
W. R.
Good for me close by nice river and a good walk in most weathers. Needs an extensive clean up in areas hence rating.
T. R.
Gorgeous area so close to travel links. Daily walks here are always a favourite when dusk is beginning.
j. s.
Love it here, much bigger than you imagine it to be, a cracking MTB trail too. Great for running walking, great for families pic nics etc.
C. W.
We visited in the school holidays so were surprised to find the car park locked and the cafe closed. It is only a small area for a walk, but beside the water is quite pleasant. (We even got to watch a baby weasel for several minutes on the river bank!) It's such a shame, therefore, that there is a lot of dog mess on the main path - and SO much litter around the edges of the area.
l. “. V. m.
Beautiful & peaceful park, If you want connect to nature then this is place for you.
K. M.
Clayton Vale is a much underused area ideal for families, cyclists and dog walkers. There are two main circular routes around the river Medlock, one that follows right alongside it, and another longer one that forms an upper path. There are also many challenging cycle tracks, seating and picnic areas and a cafe that opens at the weekend. There are various free parking spots dotted around it.
T. C.
Huge park. Easily walkable route. Beautiful scene.
G. H.
Anyone with that new years resolution of getting a little fitter, and want to have some fun....this is the place.
Probably not the place for professionals but perfect for beginners and to bring the kids.
Come down and get covered in mud 👍
p. p.
Fantastic place to go bike riding. But u might wanna take some buttys as there is no local pie shop. 😠
G. M.
Great place to walk the dog, various walks of varying length. Also lots of cycle paths. Some areas are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs but not all. A lovely river runs through the park and there are some picnic areas.
R. W.
Lovely place for dogs to roam and swim. Clear shallow waters of the medlock make it great for even smaller dogs to swim if they want. The people were friendly with us and their dog when ours wanted to say hello and play.
K. E. (. K.
The new landscaping is amazing, the litterbins regularly cleaned but could do with a few more ( horrible people keep vandalizing/setting fire to them!) Really missing the lovely volunteer-run cafe due to covid restriction and is a big highlight. Was there today with my dogs and loved that kids were shouting that they could see fish in the streams! Police often pop by. Were there today, just checking things over. Great family walking/cycling spot and fab for dog walks.
K. B.
Really good for walking around and also there's a lake/river in the middle part of it just a nice pleasant walk I also a cafe at front entrance or rear depending we're you park
V. G.
Amazing place for a walk and mountain biking.
M. C.
Fantastic park to walk, run, cycle, lots of cycling trails and generally very scenic with the Medlock River running through the middle of the park.
A. A.
Great for mountain biking. However, some parts of the trails seem to have broken glasses. So make sure you go tubeless with sealant and/or bring your patch kit with a pump.
Anyway, from beginners to experienced, there is a treat for everyone. Just make sure you match the colour coded difficulty of the trails with your level. Don't overdo yourself - you can get hurt. Helmet is a must!
M. P.
Walk my dog here every day , takes about one hour to walk round the full vale, great place to unwind and chill out, unbelievable such a nice area situated between Clayton and Newton heath.
S. M.
Originally went too Phillips Park for a bike ride with my lad and his mate, went round the mountain bike course few times then play park for a bit then headed back. Going past the entrance too Clayton vale we thought we would have a look. Turns out there is loads of different paths with their own difficulties, ranging from easy too crazy! Going back to try some if the others out soon!
L. S.
Nice Park too walk around, most paths are pram friendly, just watch out for the bikes 🚲
A. B.
Close to my new home but can't wait to explore it more. I think this is going to be my new happy place 😀
R. D.
This country park is a lovely place to visit, you will e joy walking around and there is ple ty of seating to rest or admire the scenery. It's also a great place for walking your dog. There is even cycle track of different grades from easy to difficult. But the parking area is quite small
S. B.
Really enjoyed the quiet of the place, hard to believe you are in Manchester. Great walks and the staff at the cafe are so helpful and it's all for a great cause, so get yourself down there.
C. D.
Great place for a walk and food and drink at the rangers hut on weekends. Spoilt a bit by litter lauts
D. S.
Clayton Vale is a managed urban trail with mountain bike runs weaving around the park.
I’d love to say that this place is awesome, and it could be but sadly it isn’t. What lets it down is the lack of maintenance and upkeep to the space. Loads of rubbish around, obvious flytipping (in some cases over bordering residents back fences) and general lack of upkeep. Lots of the trees are broken or fallen over, in some cases into the water.
Recently, some work has been done on the space, but it’s still clearly not up to a decent standard yet.
E. B.
Great walk with the kids and dog. Saw lots of bike tracks too.
R. K.
Clayton Vale is a great open space, there are lots of paths, trees, flowers and a river. Great for families, walks, bike rides or just being amongst nature :)
c. f.
I love it... its so big
J. M.
Great for dog walking. Loads of pathways leading you all around the reserve. Easy to get lost, though!
S. D.
Nice walking , , nice scenery, , but very steep in places. From the bottom of Berry Brow towards Philips Park is fairly flat.
Good cafe, when open 😁😁🙌.
When the virus19 has departed, I'll be back for bacon butties.😀😀👏👏
T. W.
Lovely place for a walk, very well maintained and ideal for children, dog walkers or cyclists
J. B. (.
Always enjoy walking here. Lots of different routes to take rather than just the one along the river.
There is a cafe that open at weekends only and serves the very basics. Toasties, hot & cold drinks. I wish it was open through the week, it could be a good money maker. The ladies & John that run it are all voluntary and work tirelessly through the weekend and are always busy planning for their next event.
There's superb cycle routes for every ability.
On the whole a lovely place to visit for the family and dogs.
C. O.
It's incredible that we have a mountain bike park. I love going here and have so much fun. That said it's really sad that locals deface the signage and the bike washing facility nearby. The development committee can't keep up with it financially and now some parts of the trail are a risk because you don't know which level of trail you are entering. Outside of that, what a brilliant brilliant place accessible to everyone of all skill levels on a bike.
V. L.
Good place for walk and picnic
J. W.
Great place to walk the dog on your family day out. Some litter issues, including multiple supermarket trolleys! But otherwise all good.
P. L.
It's an amazing dog walk. I just think its a shame there are endless miles of pretty much unused mountain bike tracks that are ideal for letting the pooches run riot on.
R. S.
A good place to have a refreshing walk with nice scenery. And really excellent for mountain biking with numerous trails.
m. h.
Plenty of space to walk the dog .
p. l.
Good for biking. I had a great time on a bike..
E. (.
It's a lovely place for walking or cycling, also there's a nice little inexpensive cafe waiting at the end of the walk, we only played £1.30 for a brew and a can of ice cold drink😊 and there was plenty of spaces to park we didn't have to pay to park so all good.
h. k.
Great open space .... Ideal for walking dogs or taking out your kids . Small river flowing through it ... You can catch a glimpse of some fish if you look carefully . My son loves to wade into the waters when the weather permits . You can also see rabbits and the occasional deer ....
T. Q.
A great novice/beginner mountain bike trail, with a couple of short yet challenging areas for more intermediate or advanced riders.
I found that I was able to hone my skills here to help prepare for bigger more challenging rides such as gisburn Forrest or Lee Quarry.
You'll be welcomed with:
- Clear signage
- Berms
- Short rock beds
- Quite smooth riding terrain in the main
- Lots of trees and greenery for a city centre trail
- Only one very short run with drops (black)
The blue/dark blue trail is fun and windy, with short up and down hill segments, laid out in a loop around the park.
The couple of red and orange routes are probably more on par with dark blue routes at bigger trail centres.
I didn't show my full skillset on the black route in case I broke something ... Like my will 😂
All in all a good 1-2 hour ride out, but a word of warning for serious pro riders this is just good for warming up or practice, not for a full challenging day trip
A. H.
I love mountain biking here. I’ve had mostly good experiences but there have times where I have felt unsafe riding on my own. The MTB routes are fun and test your skills. All in all, it’s not bad
J. T. J. l.
This is a lovely place to walk or run through sit and relax and enjoy the peace and quietness, nice clean and tidy one of the places that's still free to enjoy
M. A.
Massive park, I went there one day without my phone, I got lost and couldn't find my way out the park, I had to walk with a stranger to the nearest exist (he had flash on his phone and it was dark) I finally managed to leave the park after 2 hours of wandering around in the dark. They also have amazing mountain bike tracks
D. I.
The mountain bike trail here is good for beginner's and experts but be wary of dog walkers and people who wander on to the trails. It mainly links Clayton and Newton Heath by footpath, crossing the river at the bottom of the vale. Expect steep hills.
P. W.
Deep valley with woods and River Medlock. Extensive network of paths and a mountain biking trail. I go there a lot. Wouldn't know it is only a couple of miles from centre of Manchester.
M.
Fantastic local cycling and walking routes near the heart of Manchester, if you're lucky in the evening you may see some wild rabbits!
D. W.
A really lovely place to visit all year round at anytime during the day! I'd agree with all of Rose Kings comments, she sums it up very well! At a certain time of the year, you can see the green at the side of the inexpensive cafe, turn into a beautiful bed of stunning bluebells!
j. d.
Mtb trails are in much need of some love, but still a fun place to ride/walk
M. L.
Clayton vale is a beautiful hid away easy stroll. Great for cycling with off road tracks for something a little more challenging.
Great for dog walking, family walks and picnics.
Perfect for taking the children wit lots of off tracks to them giving them the feeling of being in a forest.
Well worth a visit. x Mx
S. D.
Nice walk. A few different walks . Lots of bins . Very clean. Unfortunately the carpark is always locked.
A. W.
Decent little trails ride to brush up on the winter kinks
L. R.
Amazing Mountain Biking is on offer here with Red, Blue and Black options for cycling along. Watch out for dog walkers on the trails though. This gets a bit annoying and could cause a bad accident. If you are a dog walker then please stay away from the cycling tracks. These are for bikes ONLY and there are plenty of other routes for walkers. Thank you. Also, look out for broken glass if you are cycling on the trails, seems to be a lot of it about... I think it was an old landfill site? A bit of a problem for punctures 😒
R.
What a beautiful place right next to the city centre. Always something to see or explore! Loads of wildlife...rabbits, king fishers, fish, jay birds, woodpeckers. It's lovely to go at different times of year to see the changes. The visitors centre of have activities in the summer for kids and is open for a coffee or tea. Well worth a visit.
V. R.
A nice day out for cycling. Some nice leisurely trails with some sricky drops if you decide to tackle the tougher sections. Also nice for walking with the kids and dogs.
J. F.
good for dog walk
I. S.
Beautiful walk along the river. Mountain bike trails for the more adventurous.
S. G.
Beautiful park, under used. Hidden away in the barn area. It is a little stretch of nature, a mini paradise. Fab for walking dogs
J. P.
Clayton Vale is a true gem and one of the best places in Manchester for nature
K. u.
Remember this place as a kid in the early 80s them planting the trees 🎄 5' then now 30 to 40 ft High beautiful place so peaceful the air so fresh great place to sit in the sun ☀ 😎 and appreciate nature right on your doorstep brilliant 👍
M. K.
Nice and big valley. Perfect for dog walks, running and cycling! Love the place!
S.
Ok for a nice walk near the river and plenty of benches. A bit disappointing about the number of trains going past that spoil the peacefulness. Lots of dog poo on the grass in the car park so watch your step.
A. B.
Nice little walk and I believe there are some cycling tracks around the area for mountain biking.
s. G.
Good for letting you're kids ride bikes and quite peaceful
S. J. D.
Brilliant for a relaxing walk, or invigorating run, by the river Medlock with the kids, the dog (take bags!) or by yourself. The mountain bike trails are excellent, with varying degrees of difficulty from suitable for the young or the new to the sport, right up to the 'be careful or you'll break your neck/back/legs/arms...".
There's also plenty of spaces for a picnic, or to just sun yourself - when the weather permits it.
A. F.
Not too muddy even after days of torrential rain. Nice social distancing with no larger groups on a cold Sunday afternoon
P. O.
Enjoyed a ride on the Dark Blue route at Clayton Vale Mountain Bike route. A good ride, finished off with a coffee and snack at the local visitor centre run by Volunteers!
C. P.
Flat walk in places, parking around the park mostly on roads. Most pathways accessible for prams, slight damp smell in autumn/winter
M. W.
Great place to walk dogs lovely scenery lots to do if your into bikes the bike trail is really good ,the river runs through and a fishing pond is quite some size I'm a regular just love the place, parking limited and a little cafe that cheap and staff are lovely food is nice.
M. J.
Really nice walk with lovely scenery marred only by the disrespect shown to the area in the form of defaced signage and litter. This is really local to me however and one of the nicer walks in the area.
B. B. 2.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the lack of things to do, Other than that great place to stroll
B. W.
A 15 minute walk from the Etihad campus of Manchester City is Clayton Vale. A rather nice walk along the river Medlock in a park created in the mid 1800's for the workers to get fresh air and relax. Only 2 miles from the centre of busy Manchester and hardly a soul on this walk. Lovely flowers filled meadows a real treat to find in the middle of a very urban area
M. T. S.
Great place for a walk. Wish more parents would introduce their kids to the outside world rather than let them play computer games. Only thing I'm annoyed about is the dog owners and their filthy creatures fouling the area! !!
..
K. O.
It has lovely scenery for the hot sunny days to have a nice stroll also it has plenty of shade and seating areas .
h.
Lovely walk, you would not think you are so close to the city centre.
l. o.
Great place for walking the dogs. Also great for cycling as there are numerous trails of varying difficulty. Worth a visit
A. M.
First time there today and it's a good ride yes there is some parts where there is smashed glass and other bits of litter but for a free place to go ride it's good with some nice technical segments
C. B.
Reviewed as a mountain biker:
The mtb trails are surprisingly good. Medium sized stones pack the path which are slippy with moss in shaded bits but the red run is good fun. If your a seasoned mountain biker you will need to go round a few times to get your fill. The place is pretty dirty tho. Dog poo, glass and litter all around. High likely hood of scallies too so be careful with expensive bikes.
Great place for beginners and kids to the sport
L. M.
Always beautiful, love taking the kids and my dog for a walk, so lucky to have such a place nearby.
C. B.
Clayton vale is a very good place to go and cycle your bikes because it has three very good trail's to go on, they are all different types of trails hard mediam easy witch are marked by the way of red amber and green, they are well worth having a go on them.
A. M.
Nice place to walk around, just wished the walking paths were wider.
D. M.
Large, heavily wooded green space. Popular with cyclists, walkers & dog walkers.
D. W.
Great for walking your dog and also has some excellent cycling routes. There is a small cafe but parking is limited.
T. S.
Good attempt to make some mountain bike trails in an urban park. Handy for introducing new riders to singletrack before heading to the countryside or a larger dedicated trail centre.
D. H.
The vale is a very nice walk
The fishing pond is overgrown with weeds
R. G.
For all levels of mtb trail riders, from novice to expert.. Fantastic purpose built mtb trails.. All sign posted with colour coded trail levels so no risk of going off course. No risk of bumping into dog walkers.. Love it two 🖒🖒fresh!
Very close to the national cycling centre. In between wich and the Vale, you can find a bmx track.. There is even a Evans cycles close by to the NCC..should you need a emergency repair. Would recommend that you wear the appropriate safety gear.
C. W.
Beautiful but a bit quiet on certain part of the park.
c. b.
Lovely place to walk ,paths are pretty good and quite an easy place to stroll along the river medlock
M. W.
A lovely bit of country side. Unfortunately it's getting worse with household rubbish being dumped in the shrubs and wooded areas. I do my best to pick as much up as possible. There's no help from the council or the parks department as I know they just walk passed and ignore the rubbish.. There are only 5 rubbish bins in total around all of the top road ( approx 4.5 miles in total) hope someone feels the same as me. Shame on them that do the countryside harm. I have seen a deer on hear at six in the morning and also have a picture of a family of them near where to the bay horse pub used to be. Sent to me by a friend.
t.
Lots to explore. Can find deer, kingfishers and characters. Great to take dogs, kids and mountain bikes.
M. “. D.
It'd be nice if people wouldn't leave rubbish and canisters all over the place and keep agreesive dogs on a leash
A. D.
Hidden gem just outside the city centre, ideal for dog walks and pretty clean.
J. O.
I really like going for walks here and a good place to catch up with mates. Passers-by are usually friendly. The only let down is the occasional youths and irresponsible dog owners.
A. W.
Nice for a walk during the day. Quite large grounds with some beautiful scenery. Especially good for biking on a track with an ATB.
A. J.
A very good place for walking your dog . Also has bike off road tracks for all you out there that like a bump, jump and downhill .
D. H.
Nice area of green. River flowing through the middle of it. Great for a walk both for yourself and your dog.
A. B.
A very well maintained riverside area.A number of cycle routes for mountain bikes. Frequently surprised by the number of bird species and wild animals for an inner city area.
N. M.
Lovely walk.
M. b.
The park is so big and well kept nice day there
D. T.
Used to be nice wild park ideal for jogging or a stroll down the stream, now stream stinks and banks are overgrown with Himalayan balsam still good for mountain bike rides
A. H.
Great variety of MTB trails. Nice areas to walk around too. Pretty quiet and close to the National Cycle Centre.
Z. R.
Perfect place to ride a bike and also for a nice walk
D. B.
Beautiful place to walk & enjoy nature, at its best.
V. T.
Clayton Vale always kept so clean, lovely cafe at the visitor centre, plenty of space for dog walkers and cycling and picnics x x x
w. m.
The place we grew up,, a very beautiful place now, if you need peace and tranquility from the hustle and bustle of the busy lives we lead these days the Vale is the place to go, it's a heaven of natural beauty in the middle of the city, all ways worth a visit
J. B. (.
Good place for walking and mountain biking trails
C. M.

Mountain cycling
a. w.
Lovely walk, most of it tarmac if you set of from Edge lane.
J. B.
It's quiet it's safe and series beautiful dog walkers are friendly to the wildlife is stunning
M. M.
Place to have fantastic picnics. Mountain bike trails. Small pebble waterfall lake... lots of Greenland and walking Activities......
D. “.
A great walk, run or bike ride... Walkers stay off the mountain bike trails for your own safety! Try the little cafe at the far end
0.
Great for the bike trails, however, some are full of glass. Not appropriate. Been a few times, very enjoyable.
R. M.
Love walking my dog here - the little cafe is a great addition serving delicious cakes, coffees and ice cream.
C.
Vast inner city park featuring numerous signposted trails of Berting degrees of toughness, also has the River Medlock running right through of the park, on its way to Phillips Park before then entering the first of many culverts that carry it through Manchester City Centre before joining the River Irwell On The border of Salford
S. H.
